I took it prior to a workout and I felt an analgesic effect. I've had many shoulder surgeries, and I felt a lot better when I took this. I did some more research and saw it is touted as having anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. I know that antioxidants can blunt the hormetic effect of exercise. So should I be worried about that with this supplement? In my response, I recommend: -Black Ant Extract from Lost Empire Herbs -My podcast on hydrogen rich water -Thorne Quercetin phytosome -Organic green tea polyphenol -Blood flow restriction straps (BFR Bands) -Study: Exercise, oxidants, and antioxidants change the shape of the bell

Ep 1050The Wildatarian Diet: Living As Nature Intended: A Customized Nutritional Approach for Optimal Health, Energy and Vitality.
Most diet trends have one thing in common: they offer a one-size-fits-all approach and are not designed for your unique body and health history. Yet society insists time and time again on ordering the “diet du jour,” from low-carb/low-fat to the latest low-carb/high-fat diet. For many, it is not working – and, in some cases, it is harmful. But I recently read a book about a new approach to diet and living that is always on trend and in style, because it is customized to you and only you: The Wildatarian Diet: Living As Nature Intended: A Customized Nutritional Approach for Optimal Health, Energy and Vitality. This book introduces several evolved and sustainable concepts that are backed by science and supported by thousands of clinical outcomes from author Teri Cochrane, my guest on this podcast. Teri is an integrative practitioner and thought leader in nutritional counseling. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida, and she is a graduate of the Huntington College of Health Sciences and the National Leadership Institute. She also has extensive practices, such as healing touch, craniosacral therapy and herbology. She has developed her own methodology, "The Cochrane Method," which integrates a multi- level nutritional approach, including observation and listening, to develop a bio-individualized plan for her clients. Teri is currently in private practice in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area, where she specializes in complex health conditions and elite athletic performance. She serves as a nutritional counselor to ballerinas and Olympic hopefuls, including one of the most promising young swimmers in the country. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Terri came about the name "Wildatarian"...6:15 "Patient Zero" (real name is Glenn) had a rare form of cancer called amyloidosis Glenn was told to eat lots of protein after chemo; after two rounds, had congestive heart and kidney failure Realized the amyloids were coming from the food supply Took away pork, chicken, turkey; gave him wild game (bison, Cornish game hens, etc.) Wildatarians can be plant-based, meat-based; based on your genetic makeup Amyloids develop in farm-raised meats but not in wild game; they are indigestible Similar to an auto-immune issue This approach has helped treat Hashimoto's disease How to test for amyloids: Protein in urine Light chain (more accurate) -How Terri determines the appropriate diet for a patient...15:00 We're all bioindividual Genetic testing used: 23 and Me Many variants done in house Who should avoid sulfur in their diet Roundup (the pesticide) prevents sulfur in our food from becoming sulfate Kale is problematic Beware of sulfur-based supplements touted as antioxidants (glutathione) Center lane vs. "fringe" foods Focus on genetic blueprint first The body is a constant communicator; we're not learned in its tells -How Terri's clients access wild game, especially when living in urban areas...27:55 Dartagnan Foods (link) Major grocers are carrying bison, New Zealand lamb, etc. Opt for a sustainably raised approach to our animals Why is methane an issue today, after millennia of cows on the planet? They are being fed food they cannot digest Look for small and medium local farmers Organic standards have been diluted Wildatarian veggies are those which are suited to your genetic makeup Cilantro and cucumber juice is Terri's favorite drink -Why Terri frowns upon the intake of peanuts...34:35 An aflatoxin: "it's the devil on steroids" It's highly fungal (feeds cancer, candida) Peanut butter is the one food she'll never have on her plate She recommends sunflower butter -Why Terri loves beans and the best way to prepare them...39:22 Pressure cooker breaks down the "exoskeletons" of the beans Apple cider vinegar Green pepper helps break down the beans -What is "ballerina syndrome"...41:53 Terri works with the Washington Ballet Elite athletes push their bodies through epinephrine to manage the sugar regulation Epinephrine is a stress hormone, secreted by the adrenals It opens the gut, causes leaky gut syndrome It disregulates insulin -How an athlete, who consumes supplements, bars, etc. would do the wildatarian diet...46:00 -Where supplements and pills fit into the wildatarian diet...53:35 We don't have nutrient rich food Supplement strategically Wildatarian Quiz -And much more... Ep 1049How To Use The Wonderful World Of Self-Quantification To Take Your Health Into Your Own Hands (& The 11 Best Blood Tests To Get).
I recently had the pleasure to speak at the fabulous and intriguing "Kentucky Castle", a unique destination hotspot with a full biohacking facility, sauna, farm-to-table restaurant, precision medicine arm, hemp farm, horse facilities and much more. The castle is owned by one of the physicians who hosts the "Wild Health" podcast, on which I was recently a guest. This is part one of a two part series that addresses the oft-confusing world of "taking your health into your own hands" via genetic testing, blood and biomarker tracking, sleep measurements and other forms of self-quantification. In part two, you'll get to sit in on a very interesting post-talk Q&A with myself and several of the physicians in attendance at the conference. Ep 1047An Interview With "The Smartest Physician On The Planet": Crazy Biohacking Stacks For Cognitive Function, Microdosing CBD, The Rolls Royce Of Jet Lag Hacking & Much More.
Dr. Ted Achacoso attained a college degree in biology at the age of 18 and a doctor of medicine at the age of 22. He is the founding pioneer of the clinical practice of Health Optimization Medicine and Practice (HOMe/HOPe), which is the detection and correction of imbalances at the level of the metabolome. He was mentored by Thierry Hertoghe, the founding pioneer of Anti-Aging Medicine and Nutritional Medicine (Dr. Ted is double board-certified, Paris). He was mentored by William S. Yamamoto, the founding pioneer of Medical Informatics and an Artificial Intelligence researcher (Washington, DC). He was also mentored by D. Wayne Silby, the founding pioneer of Socially Responsible Investing and Finance (Washington, DC) and by three Philippine pioneers in Interventional Neuroradiology, in Neurology, and in Pharmacology/Toxicology. His representative body of work includes a book containing the first ever neural circuitry database (“connectome”) for an organism, journal articles, US patents, software, grants, and recorded interviews, webcasts, podcasts, and speaking engagements in the areas of: (1) artificial ethology, computational neuroethology, biomathematical modeling of nervous systems, and computability of consciousness, (2) medical informatics, medical decision-making, connectionist systems, and expert systems, (3) computer-assisted imaging, edge detection algorithms, and telehealth, (4) virtual group dynamics, communication, and collaboration methods (He created the first wireless groupware), (5) parallel, cluster, cloud, and distributed emergent computing, (6) predictive complex adaptive system modeling of financial time series, and (7) health optimization medicine including metabolomics, epigenetics, bioenergetics, gut microbiota, exposomics, chronobiology, and evolutionary medicine. He is based in Washington, DC, maintains a tricontinental HOMe practice (North America, Europe, Asia), and performs HOMe/HOPe lecturing and mentoring to doctors and practitioners. Dr. Ted provides international corporate consulting activities involving nutritional supplement formulation and the establishment of metabolomics, mitochondria, and microbiota laboratories. He strongly suspects that this world is an illusion projected as a hologram by the human biocrystal, and pushes to create deliberately sustainable, happy dreams instead of nightmares. Dr. Achacoso has trained, researched, and worked in many different fields: 1) Interventional neuroradiology and pharmacology in Manila; 2) Medical informatics and artificial intelligence in Washington, DC; 3) Scientific advisor to local venture and global institutional investment funds in Bethesda, MD; 4) As Founder and Chief Technology Officer of a group communication and collaboration software company in Rosslyn, VA (He created the first wireless mobile groupware); 5) As a quant trader for an incubator hedge fund in Rehoboth Beach, DE; 6) In Anti-Aging Medicine and Nutritional Medicine in Paris, Brussels, Monte Carlo. Ep 1046How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age: The Longevity Paradox & The 7 Deadly Myths Of Aging
My guest on today's podcast and former guest on my show "The Truth About Lectins And The Plant Paradox", Dr. Steven Gundry proposes in his new book "The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age", that the “diseases of aging” we most fear are not simply a function of age; but rather, they are a byproduct of the way we have lived over the decades. In The Longevity Paradox, he maps out a new approach to aging well—one that is based on supporting the health of the “oldest” parts of us: the microorganisms that live within our bodies. He believes that - from diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s to common ailments like arthritis to our weight and the appearance of our skin, these bugs are in the driver’s seat, controlling our quality of life as we age. Dr. Gundry is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health. There, he invented devices that reverse the cell death seen in acute heart attacks; variations of these devices subsequently became the Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula. It has become the world’s most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery. After completing a fellowship in congenital heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, in London, Dr. Gundry was recruited as Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. There, he and his partner, Leonard Bailey, pioneered infant and pediatric heart transplantation. Together, they have performed more such transplants than any other surgeons in the world. During his tenure at Loma Linda, Dr. Gundry pioneered the field of xenotransplantation, the study of how the genes of one species react to the transplanted heart of a foreign species. He was one of the original twenty investigators of the first FDA-approved implantable left ventricular assist device (a kind of artificial heart). Dr. Gundry is also the inventor of the Gundry Ministernomy, the widely used minimally invasive approach to aortic- or mitral-valve repair, the Gundry Lateral Tunnel, a “living” tissue that can rebuild parts of the heart in children with severe congenital heart malformations; and the Skoosh™ venous cannula, the most widely used cannula in minimally invasive heart operations. One of the fathers of robotic surgery, as a consultant to Computer Motion (now Intuitive Surgical), Dr. Gundry received early FDA approval to use robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for coronary artery-bypass and mitral-valve operations. He holds patents on devices for connecting blood vessels and coronary artery bypasses without sutures, as well as for repairing the mitral valve without the need for sutures or a heart-lung machine. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASIAO), and was a founding board member and treasurer of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS). He recently completed two successive elected terms as President of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Desert Division. Dr. Gundry has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American Surgical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of numerous other surgical and medical societies. He is also the author of more than three hundred articles, chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals on surgical, immunology, genetic, nutrition, and lipid investigations. He has operated in more than thirty countries, including charitable missions to China, India, and Zimbabwe. Inspired by the stunning reversal of coronary artery disease in an “inoperable” patient, using a combination of dietary changes and nutriceutical supplements, in 2001, Dr. Gundry changed the path of his career. An obese, chronic “diet” failure himself, he adapted his undergraduate Yale University thesis to design a diet based on evolutionary genetic coding, which enabled him to reverse his own medical problems. In the process, he effortlessly lost 70 pounds. The equally astonishing results from following what he came to call Diet Evolution in several of his staff led Dr. Gundry to accept a position in Palm Springs where he could devote his efforts to disease reversal. No longer satisfied with repairing the damage of chronic diseases, since 2002, Dr. Gundry founded and has served as Medical Director of The International Heart and Lung Institute in Palm Springs, California, which serves patients referred from across the nation. He is also Founder and Director of The Center for Restorative Medicine, part of

Ep 1045The Peptides Podcast: Everything You Need To Know About Anti-Aging, Muscle Gain, Fat Loss & Recovery Peptides.
I receive plenty of questions about peptides and SARMs, including: -How do peptides work? -What is the safety/side effects of peptides? -What are the best anti-aging peptides? -What are the best fat loss and muscle gain peptides? -What are the best recovery peptides? -What peptides work for cognition and neural enhancement? -How do you properly mix and administer peptides? -Do peptides need to be "cycled"? My guest on today's show, Jean-François Tremblay, comes highly recommended by former podcast guest and regenerative medicine physician Dr. Matt Cook as one of the world's leading experts on the wonderful world of peptides and SARMs. Dr. Tremblay studied Exercise Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology. He has been investigating (in theory and in practice) peptides and SARMs since the 1990's and now makes peptides his main research subject. He has developed a wealth of expertise on peptides and SARMs and their practical applications in sports performance, anti-aging and health in general. During my discussion with Jean-François Tremblay, you'll discover: -The science of peptides and how they work...5:55 Amino acids linked together Growth hormone contains 191 amino acids When enough peptides link together, it becomes a protein Demistifying some of the myths surrounding peptides: They must be refrigerated at all times (only for certain peptides) Methionine bonds Most peptides are long chain, stable at room temp, More sensitive to light than heat (degradation more likely result of overexposure to light than heat) The "local effect" (BPC 157 and TB 500) -The pros and cons of various means of injecting peptides...15:15 Intra-nasal absorption is not 100%; however, what is injected has a better chance of reaching the brain Semax: Originally researched in USSR during the Cold War Russians are meticulous in their research; however, lacking in ethics Icarus documentary Researched on humans before other animals; published only after testing on animals -Peptide safety and side effects of use...21:30 Worst-case scenario of "overdosing" on peptides is that it simply doesn't work; no notable negative side effects Not the case with nootropics; you're messing with the brain's chemistry Bottom line: Don't throw caution to the wind. Be aware of proper dosages and administer correctly to the best of your knowledge -Legality and sourcing issues with peptides...32:15 99% of them come from China (even if the label says "Made in the USA") Chinese government dictates who produces what, such as peptides Chinese company released a growth hormone which was very effective, then replaced it with another (under the same name) that had negative side effects Scandinavian company was dishonest about dosage of melanotan (5 mg when advertised as 10 mg) There are only a couple of sources, albeit distributed by many different brands The bacteriostatic water included with the peptide should be crystal clear when it's added There's a reason for the high cost: equipment, repairs, etc. -Whether peptides need to be "cycled" in their use...44:00 Some, yes. It depends on the peptide Effect of BPC-157 lasts around 6 hours Effect of TB-500 lasts 10-15 days; but it's out of your system in 12 hours -Recommended anti-aging peptides...49:30 Epitalon The effects are not as immediate as peptides such as BPC-157 MOTS-c Humanan -The best peptides for fat loss...58:38 There is no "magic pill" Take care of the low hanging fruit: exercise, diet, etc. Tesamorelin (Egrifta) CJC-1295 (no dac version) -Recommended peptides for muscle gain...1:02:45 Nothing for non-competitive use Requires strict discipline and patience; marginal results at best -Jean-François' peptide regimen...1:04:51 Epitalon DSIP (affects the delta phase of sleep only) TB-500 (once a month) BPC-157 (once every couple of months) Thymus (timalin or vilon) twice a year Semax very occasionally -And much more... Ep 1044The Problem With Sleeping On Your Side, How To Sleep On Your Back, Little-Known Sleep Enhancement Tricks & Much More!
Over the past 20 years, my guest on today's show, Dr. Peter Martone, has been trying to recommend pillows for his patients that would put their head in the correct position so that they could get a great night's sleep and wake up rested. He could not find one, and he would have patients purchase soft down pillows and stuff them under their necks. He found that a conventional pillow would loose its shape and end up on the floor. The problem is that a pillow is for your head and you can not support your head to get a great night sleep. But one day he was watching the movie “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” in 2000 and the two actors came out of the room after “cuddling” all night. The camera gave a quick glimpse of the room they came out of. It showed what the two actors slept on, and to his amazement it was just a thin pad for their body and a block of wood in lieu of a pillow for their head. In that lightbulb moment, Dr. Martone invented the exact sleeping tool we discuss on today's podcast. He's one of the smartest guys I've ever talked to when it comes to sleep, so prepare to optimize your rest and recovery biomechanics like never before! During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon inspired Dr. Martone's invention... One of the props was a piece of wood, not as a pillow, but for their neck Peter had shoulder issues, couldn't identify the cause While camping, he used a shoe under his neck for sleeping; woke up well rested Used a shoe, and other odd objects for sleeping; shoulder and other health issues were resolved -Surprising problems caused by sleeping on one's side... 90% of Peter's patients have some type of damage to their cervical curve in the neck We lose the curve doing day to day activities, and there's nothing to repair it at night 98% of patients who lose the curve in their neck develop an unnatural curve in their lower back This eventually leads to scoliosis in the lower back The vermis portion of the brain: main function is to control the body's proprioception 80% of proprioception into the brain comes from the spinal cord The vermis atrophies due to loss of proprioception It affects the pre-frontal cortex (executive functioning) Decreasing the curve in the spine severely limits glymphatic drainage Why we toss and turn at night: Pain centers and nerve centers are very close together When you fall asleep on your side, you can only stay in that position for a short period of time Body should be in a "neutral sleeping position" Alcohol inhibits pain sensors. You stay in the same position longer, and wake up in pain OURA ring If you didn't get all that, get this: Loss of the cervical curve = degeneration of the spine. It also causes the vermis to atrophy, which negatively affects the pre-frontal cortex. Side sleeping causes pain and discomfort, which in turn affects the quality of our sleep. The advantages of sleeping on the back versus the side or stomach... Use a pillow for the neck rather than the head Restore the cervical curve and decrease lumbar tension -How to train yourself to sleep on your back... Just start on your back 1-2 hours per night will be enough to help restore the cervical curve in your neck Sleep wedge pillow: 5-10 degree angle, should go to the base of your spine Gravity beds on Amazon The podcast that discusses Gravity beds The body will eventually be able to go through the night on your back Total 2-3 month transition 650 down pillow Sleeping on your back, you distribute your body weight over the greatest amount of space -The little-known hack called "Remembering" that may help with sleep problems... Peter struggled to sleep due to numerous things he was thinking about Needed to be "in control" of something Visualized people sitting in a specific seat after giving a talk; he went right to sleep Focus on something, but don't think about it You can't think yourself to sleep; you have to remember yourself to sleep Dreams are how the mind categorizes the day's events The further back in time you can remember, the more efficacious this technique will be -Ways to control your core temperature while sleeping... Allostatic load: Hierarchy of needs in bodily functions (heart pumping vs. growing fingernails) Your body cares more about your core temperature than even the immune system We get sick because there's a finite amount of energy our body can distribute Maintaining the body's core temperature maintains the allostatic load in our entire body Keep your core as warm as possible; keep hands, feet and head exposed People like to sleep on their side so they can curl up, feel protected Use a weighted blanket for a similar effect "Head garage" Place a pillow over your head, just above the nose -More little-known sleep hacks... First 2 hours of the day are the most productive and alert The story of Edison's balls... Write things down, then go to sleep. Ep 1043Why Your Vitamin E Supplement Could Be Harming You (& The "One Plant Wonder" Alternative That Could Be The Single Most Powerful Molecule If You're Stranded On A Desert Island).
At the recent A4M conference in Vegas, I ran into intriguing research from Dr. Barrie Tan, a scientist with a Ph.D in Chemistry and Biochemistry. For the last 35 years, Barrie has immersed himself in the world of Vitamin E (particularly from annatto) and is considered one of the world’s foremost experts credited with discovering a molecule called "tocotrienol" from three major natural sources: -Palm: from his native Malaysia... -Rice: at the invitation of the Prince of Thailand... -Annatto: chance finding while in Ecuador searching for lutein... It turned out that palm and rice lacked the potency as they contain too much tocopherol, so Barrie moved his research interest away briefly from tocotrienol, when by serendipity he found the best-in-class tocotrienol in the annatto plant from the Amazon. Since then, Barrie’s relationship with annatto has spanned 20 years. Barrie has worked with the US Armed Forces on using tocotrienol on “radiation countermeasures” and pioneered the science behind the annatto working with the leading scientists in the world to prove the multiple benefits of tocotrienol. Meanwhile, everyone (lay folk and nutritionist) is languishing with the lack-luster non-performing tocopherol, which Barrie calls the“wrong way to E.” Most tocopherol trials failed and did not deliver. But in multiple clinical trials spanning chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteopenia, and inflammation, tocotrienol from annatto has proven clinical benefits. Barrie is currently working on multiple cancer trials after preliminary success with end-stage patients. This is because not all forms of Vitamin E are created equal... ...Vitamin E is not a single nutrient, but rather a complex made up of 8 distinct compounds: 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols. These components have slightly different chemical structures, and these differences impart unique properties that influence their biochemical functions and their effects in the body. Most conventional supplements are typically rich in tocopherols—alpha-tocopherol, in particular—but the tocotrienol fractions have unique effects across a variety of tissues that make them desirable to supplement on their own, without tocopherols. Tocotrienols, especially delta-tocotrienol as sourced from the annatto plant (bixa orellana), have shown impressive effects in supporting overall health. Tocotrienols are associated with significantly positive effects on cardiovascular health, particularly with regard to influencing healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They may also be beneficial for a healthy inflammatory response, an important asset since chronic inflammation is a factor in damage to the cardiovascular system. Having a positive influence on lipids (fats in the blood), tocotrienols may be beneficial for those with a buildup of fat in the liver, as well as those who need help managing blood sugar and insulin levels. Clinical research also suggests tocotrienols may be a valuable addition to the supplement regimens of those who need nutritional support for strong, healthy bones. Here is a recent remark of Jonathan Lizotte, Designs for Health Founder and Board Chairman: “The health benefits realized by annatto tocotrienol go beyond that of any other nutrient I know. It’s the one supplement I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island! This is a change for me as after 35 years in this industry, my top desert island supplements have switched between magnesium and fish oil and now it stands firmly as annatto tocotrienol alone. A minimum of 150 mg per day is a must for every adult alive.” Apart from tocotrienol, Barrie discovered and has extracted the first-in-class geranylgeraniol (GG), also from the annatto plant. GG has benefits as 1) testosterone and progesterone booster; 2) pain alleviation and; 3) sarcopenia, myopathy and muscle building from this endogenous nutrient. GG is the last common step between plant and mammal (has huge implications), and may possibly be the last frontier in anti-aging nutrients. Here are Dr. Tan’s two anti-aging bottom-line nutrients: tocotrienol (exogenous) will work from outside-in, and geranylgeraniol (endogenous) will work from inside-out. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Tan discovered Annatto and became interested in Vitamin E...9:05 Began while an assistant prof at U of Mass in Amherst Palm oil in his native Malaysia is orange; is bleached out when it's processed Received grant from Malaysian government to research Research process on palm oil: Remove all fats and oil Remove all kerosene colors (orange) 25% of what was left was alpha-tocopherol, the most common variant of Vitamin E Remainder was tocotrienol Led to research on different forms of lung cancer (stopped soon after) Prince of Thailand hired him to research Buddhists don't like anything mitochondrial related Wanted plant-derived, not animal-derived research Most beneficial results

Ep 1042Shark Attacks On Goats, The Ethics Of Hunting, Human Stress Resilience & Much More! (Special Hawaii Hunting Episode)
In today's podcast, I am joined by my friends Kyle Thiermann, Chris Ryan and Mark Healey for witty banter, philosophizing, and intellectually stimulating conversation straight from the island of Hawaii, where we - along with several others mentioned in this podcast episode, such as Dr. Peter Attia, Kyle Kingsbury and Hawaii hunting guide Justin Lee - took a break from hunting, hiking, spearfishing and dressing meat to gather round the podcasting mics. In this conversation, you'll hear... -Recap of the trip...6:47 Chris was a last minute substitute Primal surroundings: goat head in the back of the pickup They were all dropped off by helicopter on various spots on the Big Island Ben engaged in spearfishing; caught Hawaiian lobster, opi'i fish Impossible to replicate their meals in a restaurant -Ben is asked about consuming energy bars while facing dehydration...12:17 If you're in an extreme dehydration situation, you're probably starving to death, so don't throw them out They could potentially be used as a water filter because they're so thick Coffee and beer don't actually dehydrate you Energy bars have moisture in them Depends on salt content, moisture level, etc. -How ranchers on the island of Kaho'olawe used goats to prevent sharks from attacking their herd...14:05 Sharks would attack as they were loaded onto ships for transport Ranchers pushed a herd of goats tied to each other off a cliff The cattle was transported while the sharks feasted on the goats -Discussion about the sustainability of humans hunting their own meat in the modern world...15:30 Hunting is necessary in Hawai'i for sustainability of the land It's not cheaper when you factor in ammo, time spent hunting, obtaining permits, etc. Large amounts of money from hunting is invested into environmental sustainability Eradication vs. management Killing an animal is a deeply personal experience Everyone who eats meat should hunt at least once We are what we eat: cruelty, apathy, torture, etc. -How do our thoughts shape our health?... Book: The Biology of Belief by Dr. Bruce Lipton Book: Mind to Matter by Dr. Dawson Church Epigenetics: Behavior of parents/ancestors affects their children's behavior and instincts Do humans have instincts? Going for the nipple Fear of snakes "Comparing notes" after a hunt separated humans from other animals Coordinated hunting -Our understanding of human history as it pertains to resilience toward stress... Research suggests we become more sensitive to stress rather than more resilient Chronic stressors (business responsibilities) our ancestors didn't deal with Experiencing stress without realizing it, or thinking you're relaxed Practice makes automatic Difference between stress and excitement Alpha vs. beta brain waves Alpha: what you experience in "the flow"; familiar, happy, focused Beta: Higher level of excitement; less predictability Parasympathetic vs. sympathetic nervous system Sympathetic: fight and flight nervous system Parasympathetic: rest and digestive nervous system Vagus nerve feeds into the sinoatrial node of the heart You want high heart rate variability (HRV) Vagus nerve is operating the parasympathetic system properly Meditating, chanting, cold water assist with maintaining high HRV -How stress affects rigor mortis (in hunted game) and cramping Deer reach rigor mortis in 20 minutes when corralled (stressed) and over an hour when killed in the wild You cramp in stressful situations while exercising due to calcium release Sour, spicy taste overrides neuronal reflex Golgi tendon organ limits the contraction, but is overridden by neuronal reflex Other animals don't have this, and put far more stress on their muscles When mom lifts a car to save the baby, the brain, because of extreme stress, overrides the golgi tendon organ Brain over brawn: why humans have the golgi tendon organ and other animals don't -The evolving understanding of convenience vs. an appreciation of our history... Infant formula: no colostrum, fatty acid, Breast milk is a fatty, highly addictive food; you'd be obese if you drank it all your life The microbiome is a gift to the environmental movement Your surroundings impact your gut health -Is bottled water really cleaner and safer than tap water?... FDA treats bottled water as a food product; tap water is treated as water, so it's tested far more often Chlorine, fluoride is in the tap water Bottled water comes from a filtered source -Why Hawai'i is so freaking amazing... Hawai'i had cattle ranchers before California Beach as well as mountain culture Cultural holocaust: Christian missionaries Hawaiian language stayed alive in the cattle ranchers: It was more functional Perhaps reflective of the number of colors, sights and scents in Hawai'i Akin to why podcasts are popular: you can break down concepts you can't on CNN -How Mark Healy narrowly escaped death while surfing in Fiji... Grew up on North Shore of Oahu; got noticed by important surfer dudes Ended up going to Fiji for his firs

Ep 1041Gretchen Rubin Interview On How To Declutter Your Home & Your Life For Outer Order, Inner Calm & Happiness.
Outer order contributes to inner calm. And for most of us, a rigid, one-size-fits-all solution doesn't work. The fact is, when we tailor our approach to suit our own particular challenges and habits, we're then able to create the order that will make our lives happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative. My guest on today's show - Gretchen Rubin - has found that getting control of our stuff makes us feel more in control of our lives. By getting rid of things we don't use, don't need, or don't love, we free our minds (and our shelves) for what we truly value. With a sense of fun, and a clear idea of what's realistic for most people, Gretchen suggests dozens of manageable steps for creating a more serene, orderly environment—one that helps us to create the lives we want. Gretchen is the author of several books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers: Better Than Before: A Day by Day Journal The Happiness Project Happier at Home And most recently: Outer Order, Inner Calm: Declutter and Organize to Make More Room for Happiness. She has an enormous readership, both in print and online, and her books have sold more than three million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages. She makes frequent TV appearances and is in much demand as a speaker. On her weekly podcast, Happier with Gretchen Rubin, she discusses good habits and happiness with her sister Elizabeth Craft. Rubin started her career in law and was clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor when she realized she wanted to be a writer. She lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What inspired Gretchen to write her book...7:40 Began with The Happiness Project (link) Disproportinate connection between outer order and inner calm (clutter blind) Getting control of our "stuff" makes us feel in control of our lives Empowers you to tackle the big projects we might otherwise avoid -If there has been scientific research to substantiate Gretchen's findings...9:00 Yes, but there's a problem: People want to know what's "best" way to clear clutter, when to do certain tasks People are different; they have strengths where others have weaknesses Some people thrive in a little bit of clutter No one size fits all approach -The criteria one can use to decide what goes and what stays...11:15 "Don't get organized"; Start by getting rid of things Marie Kondo's guidance (does this spark joy?) is slightly lofty in its aspirations Three questions to ask: Do I need this? Do I love this? Do I (or will I) use this? Be realistic about what "someday" means in the context of if and when you'll use something Ask yourself, "Have I thought about getting rid of this more than 3 times?" We often overestimate what we can do in a short time, and underestimate what we can do in a longer period of time -Whether decluttering is the same as minimalism...18:20 Minimalism as we know it is a bit extreme in Gretchen's view There are simplicity lovers and abundance lovers It all goes back to there's no one size fits all approach -How to mentally "let go" of things...20:25 The "fantasy self" Be honest with yourself: will you really use that thing? It frees up mental guilt, as well as space for other goals and desires Nostalgia, past self The best way to clear clutter is to not buy stuff in the first place Have a box of clutter, put a date on it, then throw it away after one year without looking inside it Imagine someone else enjoying the stuff Give away or recycle when possible "You created the donation to the landfill when you bought it" "Store it at the store" -Best practices in shopping online and offline to avoid unnecessary clutter...30:07 There are under buyers and over buyers Always shop as a guest; helps cut down on impulse buying Unsubscribe to all promotional newsletters Don't subscribe in the first place Force yourself to hold things in your arms whenever possible Break the impulse by intentionally making things inconvenient Don't touch, don't taste Book: Why We Buy Set limits and check with a partner (spouses) before purchasing Make lists -What a "clutter magnet" is, and why it's important...39:25 Identify the spot where clutter tends to accumulate; make a point to keep it clean every day It's easier to maintain once you take it back to "clear" It will spark joy -How to train children to declutter their personal spaces...43:15 Don't think of yourself as the potter who's molding the clay Help them to be honest about what they need, or use Everything sparks joy for children -Whether or not it's important to make your bed every morning...48:00 Establishing a bit of order in the environment is a morale boost Your bed is much closer to you than a chair; you may feel in better order Christian Gratitude Journal -Whether or not it's wise to find others to do your decluttering for you...53:25 Difficult due to the personal nature of your own stuff Maybe to help stay on task, help with the heavy lifti

Ep 1040The Most Powerful Electrical Muscle Stimulation Device Known To Humankind (& Exactly How To Use It).
I recently posted the following to my newsletter weekly roundup: "I only did two workouts this week and was sore as hell. You can view both my workouts in .pdf format by clicking here for Workout 1 and clicking here for Workout 2. The workouts were supplied to me by the wicked smart guys over at Neu.fit and I performed them while wearing the NEUBIE, which is NeuFit’s patent-pending electro-stimulation device. NEUBIE is an acronym for “NEURO-BIO-ELECTRIC STIMULATOR.” The NEUBIE can find neurological deficits in the human body with incredible precision, and has two main benefits – 1) it provides direct current (DC), and 2) it matches the signals the nervous system already sends naturally on its own. Using DC is important because it has numerous, positive biological effects. DC fields accelerate the body’s own physiological processes of healing, repair, and regeneration. Although this has been known for a long time, most devices out there are alternating current (AC). These devices are cheaper and easier to engineer, and most people don’t know the difference. Unfortunately, they don’t have anywhere near the effect at the cellular level. The NEUBIE is admittedly expensive but incredible for rehab or for training. It now holds a hallowed place in my gym. You can contact NEUFit here and mention my name for $1000 off your purchase, or you can travel to Austin, Texas to have these guys work on injuries or re-train your muscles in their gym. Ask for Chaz or Garrett if you call these folks." Here are a few video demos of me using this very unique electrical muscle stimulation device: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ3rlCw5o50 https://www.facebook.com/BGFitness/videos/im-here-with-the-folks-at-neufit-neufitben-trying-out-this-high-intensity-leg-wo/10157149029659179/ Known as "The Health Engineer," my guest on today's show Garrett Salpeter has taken his training in Engineering and Neuroscience and used it to create NeuFit. By combining next-generation technology with protocols from physical therapy and functional neurology, NeuFit helps people tap into the power of their neurology. For most people, that leads to improved function and a quicker recovery from an injury/surgery or reaching fitness goals faster than they ever thought possible. For a few, this work has even meant being able to get out of a wheelchair and walk again. Now practitioners all over the country are adding the technology into their medical, physical therapy, and fitness practices, and Garrett is passionate about teaching NeuFit to them so that this work can impact as many lives as possible. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly is a "NEUBIE" and some history behind Garrett's business...7:50 A NEUBIE is a Neuro Bioelectric stimulator NEU Fit speaks to Garrett's conviction that if we upgrade our nervous systems, it has many positive consequences in our lives Why NHL. Player Duncan Keith Calls Himself a Biohacker -How the NEUBIE is different from other EMS devices...11:15 Direct current rather than alternating current Better for regeneration and healing in the body The Body Electric by Dr. Robert Becker Focused on sensory (afferent) rather than muscle contraction (efferent) "Russian Current" is a particular wave form based on tests conducted in the 1980's, in Russia Less motor output, more sensory input Neuro muscular reeducation Being able to move through the contraction expedites the healing process -Ben and Garrett's thoughts on suppressing Heart Rate Variability (HRV) during the stimulation, and the resultant high HRV after...24:00 You want to stress the body, then let it recover and super compensate SAID Principle: Specific Adaptation to an Imposed Demand You need real time feedback Suppressed HRV during most intense workout is ideal Auto regulating training based on the nervous system -A scanning procedure that allows you to figure out which muscles need the most work...28:40 -What a typical rehab program looks like, and what to expect in terms of sessions and results...32:08 Address the dysfunction, not the symptom Active treatments; not lying down Reincorporating the movement patterns Creating other feedback to the brain; reduces threat response Go higher on the current, sometimes in the same session -How to use the NEUBIE for a full body workout...35:00 You gain more recruitment with less external load and less strain on the joints Allows to train without pain, makes exercise safer Simple bodyweight movements: bands, joint movements Progress to heavier weights, kettle bells -Why you're so sore after using the NEUBIE; if and when you should use it while you're sore...38:08 Most often used by professionals, under professional supervision Body builders are pleased with the results after just a few sets vs. a long workout in the gym Not required to be sore to build strength Stimulate yourself into a depressed state; when recovered, do it again Typical schedule: 2x/week, sometimes multiple daily in extreme cases -How the device ca

Ep 1039KetoFasting: The Dark Side of Fasting & Ketosis (+How To Use Cyclic Ketosis To Fix The Issues)
From Dr. Joseph Mercola, my friend, multiple-time podcast guest, a guy who thinks way outside-the-box and seems to always be discovering some new cutting-edge way to enhance human health and longevity, and one of the world's foremost authorities on alternative health has just written a guide to using the principles of ketogenic eating, meal planning, and timing to treat disease, promote weight loss, and optimize health. The new book is called "KetoFast: Rejuvenate Your Health with a Step-by-Step Guide to Timing Your Ketogenic Meals". In the book, he explores the profound health benefits that result when ketogenic living and well-planned fasting are combined. Topics include: -How our food is making us sick and what we can do about it... -The physiology and mechanisms of fasting, including stem cell activation... -How the cyclical ketogenic diet--with fasting included--differs from the conventional keto diet... -How fasting works and how safe it is for you... -How regular one-day fasts support fat burning and detoxification while minimizing hunger and side effects... -How to monitor your progress with lab tests... -And much more... During our discussion, you'll discover: -The fascinating history of fasting among different religions and cultures...8:25 Dr. Mercola's book was originally written to learn to optimize multiple day water fasting Most religions integrate fasting into their practice (speaks to its efficacy throughout history) It's one of the best ways to express care for your spirit, especially when combined with meditation, gratitude, solitude, etc. Therapeutic fasting: Calorie restriction to activate metabolic processes to catalyze the healing process Fasting didn't become popular in the U.S. until the 1800's with the natural hygiene movement Became more popular when Herbert Shelton popularized it in 1911 TrueNorth Health Center -Autophagy, and why Dr. Mercola thinks of a fast as a "free stem cell transplant"...16:45 Different varieties of fasting: Intermittent (the foundation) Dr. Satchin Panda found that 90% of people don't do this (listen to my podcast with Dr. Panda) You need more than intermittent to get the max effect of autophagy Fasting mimicking diet, water diet Hybrid of the two, minimize the harmful effects Autophagy: 3 types Micro Macro Chaperone mediated You activate autophagy with the keto fast Dr. Mercola does not recommend a long-term water fast Free stem cell transplant is what happens during the regeneration phase, after the autophagy phase The magic happens during the refeed and strength rebuilding; similar to a growth hormone injection Do a 42 hour fast, in which you eat 300-500 calories 2x per week -How fasting affects intestinal stem cell function...24:20 Extended fasting helps reduce gut permeability by stimulating brain/gut pathways Consider fasting before other treatments or supplements for repairing the gut Certain supplements will inhibit autophagy: colostrum, B12 AMP-k and mTOR It's your friend; The higher the better A nutrient sensor Puts your body in "repair mode" See Saw: AMP-k up, mTOR down, vice versa -What nutrients you need to optimize autophagy...34:08 Berberine ECGC from green tea and European wild apples Pomegranate peel powder Urolithin A Pomegranate Pulled Apart podcast from ATP Science Dr. Mercola’s “autophagy tea” before my nightly fast to also limit mTor activation and increase autophagy: 1 tsp Pau d’ Arco powdered tea ½ tsp hydroxycitrate and garcinia (HCA/Garcinia powder) ½ tsp quercetin powder ½ tsp glycine powder ½ teaspoon chamomile powder Lakanto monkfruit sweetener to taste You don't want to take exogenous ketones when you want to activate autophagy while fasting -How ketones protect the brain excess hydrogen peroxide...46:00 Fats and carbs are fuel sources; broken down by enzymes Oxygen receives electrons from the food you're digesting in the form of hydrogen (which is converted to water) Most people are metabolically inflexible; can't burn much fat for fuel Ketones increase Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (nADPH) -Why Dr. Mercola changed his mind about the power of water fasting as a metabolic intervention...50:55 We in the 21st century are exposed to chemical and industrial toxins not historically known to humans Toxins are stored in our fat When you fast, you release these toxins Cause unpleasant side effects and symptoms 2 phases: Convert fat soluble to water soluble (not a problem) Attach molecules to the toxin You need frequent refeeds to fuel the process of eliminating the toxins and enhancing detox pathways A keto fast (42 hours, 300-500 calories) 2x/week is far more powerful than an occasional multi-day water fast or even fast mimicking diet -What Dr. Mercola views as the "dark side of fasting"...55:00 Detoxification impairment Compliance: people just won't do it How Dr. Mercola recommends Ben improve his own fasting strategy: Ben takes essential amino acids for protein during extended fasts Don't eat meat protein (branch chain

Ep 1038Why Most Physicians Don't Practice Natural Medicine, How To Eat Seasonally, The Benefits Of Mistletoe, Tissue Salts, Neural Therapy & More
Over half of the world’s population is afflicted with some form of chronic or degenerative illness. Heart disease, autoimmune disease, diabetes, neurological conditions, cancer, Lyme disease―the list goes on. The conventional, allopathic, treat-the-symptom-with-pharmaceutical-drugs model is rapidly falling out of favor as patients are searching for nontoxic, advanced prevention and healing modalities that actually work. Bioregulatory medicine involves fixing this issue with a model that has proven effective for decades in forward-thinking developed countries, including Switzerland and Germany. Our bodies have many bioregulating systems, including the cardiovascular, digestive, neurological, respiratory, endocrine, and so on. Bioregulatory medicine is a comprehensive and holistic approach to health that advocates the use of natural healing methods to support and restore the body’s intrinsic self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms, as opposed to simply treating symptoms with integrative therapies. Bioregulatory medicine is about discovering the root cause of disease and takes into account the entire person from a genetic, epigenetic, metabolic, energetic, and emotional point of view. So while patients may have the same disease or prognosis, the manifestation of illness is entirely bioindividual and must be treated and prevented on an individual level. Bioregulatory medicine addresses the four pillars of health―drainage and detox, diet, mind-body medicine, and oral health―using a sophisticated synthesis of the very best natural medicine with modern advances in technology. In addition to identifying the cause of disease, bioregulatory medicine promotes disease prevention and early intervention of illness through noninvasive diagnostics and treatments, and incorporates the use of over 100 different non-toxic diagnostics and treatments from around the world. Forward-thinking patients and integrative practitioners will find bioregulatory medicine invaluable as they seek to deepen their understanding of the body’s many regulating systems and innate ability to heal itself. My guest on today's podcast, Dr. Dickson Thom, is the author of the new book Bioregulatory Medicine: An Innovative Holistic Approach to Self-Healing. He graduated from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in 1974. He obtained his first Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the Ontario College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1986, and in 1989 he completed a second Naturopathic degree from the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Thom was a full-time professor and the past Dean of Naturopathic Medicine at NCNM where he taught clinical and physical diagnosis, gastroenterology, neurology, practical endocrinology, x-ray practicum and business entrepreneurship for almost 25 years. In addition, he was a clinic supervisor to hundreds of students and managed care for thousands of patients. Dr. Thom is now the medical director at the American Center for Biological Medicine and the American Center for Alternative Medicine in Scottsdale, AZ. These clinics are state of the art and uniquely manage care for patients from around the world. For a complete description of these unique offerings, visit the web site TheBiomedCenter.com. Dr. Thom lectures extensively on health and business topics and has written and collaborated in the writing of many articles and books dealing with drainage, nutrition and business. Dr. Thom studied extensively with Gérard Guéniot, MD and incorporates Dr. Guéniot’s work into his seminar lectures and his private practice in Scottsdale, AZ. In August 2009 he received The VIS Award from the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians in recognition of one who represents the Vis, the Healing Power of Nature, as demonstrated through their work, life, and community service. Ep 1036The Truth About The Carnivore Diet: Everything You Need To Know About Dangers, Benefits, Mistakes & Hacks For Eating Only Meat.
Prepare yourself for the most epic, deep dive into the carnivore diet that you've ever heard. I recently listened to a physician named Paul Saladino debate research scientist Layne Norton about the carnivore diet on my friend Mark Bell's podcast. I was so intrigued by the episode that I decided to get Paul on my show to explore the science behind the carnivore diet, carnivore diet do's and don'ts, and whether the carnivore diet is a true, sustainable, natural, ancestral nutrition approach or just a dietary fad. During this show, we cover: -Why Paul is a raving fan of salmon roe...17:15 Humans cannot make Omega 3 fatty acids Omega 3's in salmon roe are in the phospholipid form Salmon roe crosses the blood brain barrier more efficiently than in the triglyceride or ethyl ester form (which you'll find in most fish oil capsules) Two tbsps of salmon roe gives you the DHA without being exposed to the metals Benefit of getting a nutrient from a food vs. from a supplement Concern with oxidation in fish oil: Look for certificate of analysis Look at levels of lipid peroxides Not nearly as much oxidation in eggs than the fish -Why Paul doesn't consume black pepper...21:15 A central principle of the carnivorous diet: plants are not put on the earth to serve humans Develop potentially toxic compounds to defend themselves from other animals A peppercorn is the seed of a plant The seeds are where a higher concentration of pesticides and toxins reside Pepper contains a compound called piperine, which inhibits UDP glucuronosyltransferase In essence: black pepper inhibits our body's natural detoxification process. Piperine is added to curcumin supplements to increase the level of curcumin you can absorb We don't actually use these molecules in human biochemistry Used to activate certain pathways to produce our own antioxidants (which is glutathione) Plants induce Nrf2, while simultaneously doing toxic things to our bodies Sulforaphane is considered to be a highly beneficial molecule as a precursor to glutathione pathways But is known to be a goitrogen (meaning it can induce hypothyroidism) Key take away: You can simulate the benefits of eating plants by eating meat and living a healthy lifestyle -Why Paul refused a cup of Kion Coffee when offered by Ben...30:45 Coffee is felt to be beneficial because of a couple of polyphenolic compounds: chloragenic acid and caffeic acid These have been found to be clastogenic (DNA damage) A coffee bean is the seed of a plant, which contains toxins as a natural defense mechanism Very few animals eat those seeds -Aren't plants like exercise, where you need them, but too much can be harmful?...26:05 Hormesis is potential benefit of plants Sulforaphane: Is linked to hypothyroidism Depends on one's baseline level of iodine consumption Does not exist in a plant Glucoraphanin is converted into sulforaphane by Myrosinase Highest levels are found in broccoli seeds and sprouts Humans are "facultative carnivores" meaning we can get everything we need from meat without ingesting the toxins found in plants. -Storage organs in plants that result in larger brains and smaller guts...46:35 Richard Wrangham Tubers Fairly toxic generally speaking Ancestral (non-hybridized) tubers aren't as valuable to humans due to size, appearance, etc. Developed big brains by eating bone marrow and brains of animals (as scavengers) No DHA, or fatty acids in a tuber Macronutrients for short term survival; micronutrients for long term survival Tubers have macronutrients, but not micronutrients Fossils of homo erectus found near water: algae, DHA, other micronutrients Just because tubers were efficacious for our ancestors doesn't mean we should choose them today Animals provide all the micronutrients we need in the most bioavailable forms The ultimate multivitamin for a human would be an animal -Why plants may not be necessary, could be harmful to the gut, and are "survival food"...50:50 Vilhjalmur Stefansson: Lived with Inuit people for a year Observed they ate plants only when "real foods" i.e. animals weren't available Book: 100 Million Years of Food by Stephen Lee Even though humans have made plants more digestible via sprouting, fermenting, etc. we should still opt for the ribeye steak. -Whether a carnivorous diet is sustainable or ethical...53:53 Eat the animal "nose to tail" Book: The Whole Beast by Fergus Henderson Muscle meat is high in methionine but low in glycine Best results come when we eat organs and tendons along with the muscle meat Different nutrients in different parts of the animal Why Ben called the carnivore diet "lazy" on the Joe Rogan podcast Carbohydrate availability for the thyroid Ancestors would eat the thyroid immediately after killing an animal Do you need plants to consume adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals? Good amounts of Vitamin C in liver and in brain; whale blubber Liver also has large amounts of carotenal, a precursor to Vitamin A Quercetin doesn't directly contribute to human bioche

Ep 1035"The Food Babe" Says They're Feeding You Lies (How to Unravel the Food Industry's Playbook and Reclaim Your Health).
In her new book "Feeding You Lies: How to Unravel the Food Industry's Playbook and Reclaim Your Health", my guest on today's podcast, Vani Hari (AKA "The Food Babe") exposes the lies we've been told about our food--and takes readers on a journey to find healthy options. There's so much confusion about what to eat. Are you jumping from diet to diet and nothing seems to work? Are you sick of seeing contradictory health advice from experts? Just like the tobacco industry lied to us about the dangers of cigarettes, the same untruths, cover-ups, and deceptive practices are occurring in the food industry. Vani blows the lid off the lies we've been fed about the food we eat--lies about its nutrient value, effects on our health, label information, and even the very science we base our food choices on. In the book, she discusses: -How nutrition research is manipulated by food company funded experts... - How to spot fake news generated by Big Food... -The tricks food companies use to make their food addictive... -Why labels like "all natural" and "non-GMO" aren't what they seem and how to identify the healthiest food... -Food marketing hoaxes that persuade us into buying junk food disguised as health food... Vani Hari started FoodBabe.com in April 2011 to spread information about what is really in the American food supply. She teaches people how to make the right purchasing decisions at the grocery store, how to live an organic lifestyle, and how to travel healthfully around the world. The success in her writing and investigative work can be seen in the way food companies react to her uncanny ability to find and expose the truth. Impassioned by knowing how food affects health, Vani loves sharing her message on the blogosphere to 3 million unique readers across the globe. Vani convinced the biggest fast food chain in the world, Subway, to remove a controversial ingredient after receiving 50,000 signatures in 24 hours on her petition to the chain. After receiving tremendous attention on her posts about Chick-Fil-A, she was invited by the company's leadership to meet at its headquarters to consult on specific improvements to ingredients used by the national chain, which they later implemented. 7 months after Vani petitioned Kraft to remove harmful petroleum-based artificial food dyes from Mac & Cheese, Kraft responded by removing the dye from all products aimed at children. Other major food companies that have responded to her writings include Panera Bread, Whole Foods, Lean Cuisine, McDonalds, General Mills, Taco Bell, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, Chipotle, Yoforia, and Moe's South West Grill. Vani's activism brought national attention at the Democratic National Convention when she used her status as an elected delegate to protest in front of the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture on the issue of GMO labeling. Vani has been profiled in the New York Times, USA Today, Washington Times, Chicago Tribune, appeared on The Dr. Oz Show, Good Morning America, The Doctors Show, NBC News, Fox News and is a regular cooking contributor on NBC's Charlotte Today and food expert on CNN. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Inorganic phosphates (Pi), and their effects on physical performance...8:20 Here are the two studies Ben mentions: Phosphate Additives in Food—a Health Risk High-Phosphate Diet Induces Exercise Intolerance and Impairs Fatty Acid Metabolism in Mice Pi is used by the food industry to give processed foods a certain texture, add shelf life, etc. Adults with high Pi levels have a higher mortality rate: affects kidneys and other organs Study at Univ. of Texas: Pi lowered performance, Changed gene expression Higher level of Pi, the lower the physical activity Sodium phosphate is the most common ingredient used as a preservative -Insights into Vani's investigations into why foods are manufactured so differently in Europe vs. the U.S....12:15 Vani became aware of this when she noticed the ingredients in Kraft mac and cheese was very different in Europe than in the U.S. Started a petition to get Kraft to remove artificial food dyes in the U.S. U.K. requires warning label: "may cause adverse effects on activity and attention in children" Kraft decided to use natural ingredients rather than put on the warning label Chose to not do the same in the U.S. because the FDA doesn't require a warning label; it's simply cheaper. Natural ingredients look and taste the same as yellow #5 and #6 Every major American company does this Pepsi serves American version of its products with artificial preservatives; and one with plain sugar, beta kerotene, etc. in Europe It comes down to money: synthetic ingredients are cheaper French fries are vastly different in U.K. from the U.S. These chemicals go into many things, not just food The dangers of artificial flavors: FDA was recently sued by several non-profits because 7 ingredients were allowed to be used, that are linked to cancer in animal studies FDA banned the chemicals due to the lawsuit Found every

Ep 1034Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us about Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom.
Animal scientists have long considered domestic livestock to be too dumb to know how to eat right, but the lifetime research of animal behaviorist Fred Provenza and his colleagues has debunked this myth. Their work shows that when given a choice of natural foods, livestock have an astoundingly refined palate, nibbling through the day on as many as fifty kinds of grasses, forbs, and shrubs to meet their nutritional needs with remarkable precision. In his brand new book "Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us about Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom", Fred presents his thesis of the wisdom that links flavor-feedback relationships at a cellular level with biochemically rich foods to meet the body’s nutritional and medicinal needs. Provenza explores the fascinating complexity of these relationships as he raises and answers thought-provoking questions about what we can learn from animals about nutritional wisdom. What kinds of memories form the basis for how herbivores, and humans, recognize foods? Can a body develop nutritional and medicinal memories in utero and early in life? Do humans still possess the wisdom to select nourishing diets? Or, has that ability been hijacked by nutritional “authorities”? Consumers eager for a “quick fix” have empowered the multibillion-dollar-a-year supplement industry, but is taking supplements and enriching and fortifying foods helping us, or is it hurting us? On a broader scale Fred explores the relationships among facets of complex, poorly understood, ever-changing ecological, social, and economic systems in light of an unpredictable future. To what degree do we lose contact with life-sustaining energies when the foods we eat come from anywhere but where we live? To what degree do we lose the mythological relationship that links us physically and spiritually with Mother Earth who nurtures our lives? Provenza’s paradigm-changing exploration of these questions has implications that could vastly improve our health through a simple change in the way we view our relationships with the plants and animals we eat. Our health could be improved by eating biochemically rich foods and by creating cultures that know how to combine foods into meals that nourish and satiate. Provenza contends the voices of “authority” disconnect most people from a personal search to discover the inner wisdom that can nourish body and spirit. That journey means embracing wonder and uncertainty and avoiding illusions of stability and control as we dine on a planet in a universe bent on consuming itself. Fred Provenza is professor emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University. At Utah State, Provenza directed an award-winning research group that pioneered understanding of how learning influences foraging behavior and how behavior links soils and plants with herbivores and humans. Provenza is one of the founders of BEHAVE, an international network of scientists and land managers committed to integrating behavioral principles with local knowledge to enhance environmental, economic, and cultural values of rural and urban communities. The many awards he received for research, teaching, and mentoring are the creativity that flowed from warm professional and personal relationships with over 75 graduate students, post-doctoral students, visiting scientists, and colleagues. Along with colleagues, he authored over 250 publications in scientific journals and books. His first book was Foraging Behavior. He co-authored a second book with Michel Meuret, The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders. In our podcast, we take a deep dive into all these questions and topics and many more, including: -How Fred got interested in studying animals and their nutritional habits...7:45 He was fascinated by all things having to do with nature from a very young age Led to studying wildlife biology at Colorado State U; worked on a ranch concurrently Ran the ranch after graduation for 2 years Led to Utah State studying for a grad degree Eating habits of goats contradicted conventional wisdom Book: Biochemical Individuality by Roger Williams -Biochemical individuality: what it is, and why it's important...10:48 There's no such thing as an "average animal" in regards to food selection Study on how animals "finished" eating... Total Mixed Ration: mixing ingredients together (5 total), versus offering them individually Animals with a choice on what to eat ate less than animals with no choice Gained weight, body composition was just as good Animals with no choice suffered over-ingestion 5 ingredients is not nearly as much as animals foraging in the wild No 2 animals selected the same combo of ingredients; nor the same food from day to day -How Clara Davis' studies on children over 100 years ago is similar to Fred's work today...17:38 Longest study ever done on human beings 6 years; performed on adopted children Choice of 34 different foods Allowed children to self-s

Ep 1033The Ultimate Guide To Freediving, Legal Blood Doping, Wim Hof Breathing, Increasing Your Breathhold Time, Underwater Ear Equalizing, Spearfishing & Much More!
As I wrote about in my article entitled “How Breath-Holding, Blood-Doping, Shark-Chasing, Free-Diving & Ketosis Can Activate Your Body’s Most Primal Reflex.”, after reading the fascinating book "Deep: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us about Ourselves" I hired (two years ago) a guy named Ted Harty, from Immersion Freediving in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to certify me in freediving so that I could learn how to spearfish. At over six feet tall and 230 solid pounds, Ted is a big, bold, loud, extroverted character. He looks like a boxer, and not like a guy who you’d expect to be diving at incredibly efficient oxygen capacity to depths deeper than most human beings have ever ventured. But it was Ted who was about to open my eyes to a whole new world of freediving, and who I spent nearly every waking hour of ninety-six hours of my life learning every possible closely-guarded breath-holding and deep-diving tactic. Ted began his underwater career in 2005, as a scuba instructor in the Florida Keys. Over the years, Ted became a Scuba Schools International Instructor and a Professional Association of Diving Instructors Staff Instructor. But whenever Ted was on the boat and did not have students to take care of, he’d jump in with mask, fins and snorkel and play around on the reef, sans scuba equipment. As Ted highlights in this fascinating, quick video about his life: “Sometimes I’d have just five minutes to swim around without all of my scuba gear. I loved it. I could swim down to the sand at Sombrero Reef and hang out for a bit at 20 feet. I wanted more. I wanted to learn how to stay down longer and how to dive deeper.” So, in January of 2008, Ted took his first Performance Freediving International (PFI) course. “I couldn’t believe how little I knew about freediving at the time. As a scuba instructor I knew more about diving physiology than the average Joe, but quickly realized I knew nothing about freediving. At the start of the course I had a 2:15 breath-hold, but after just four days of training I did a five-minute hold! I couldn’t believe it was possible.” Next, Ted signed up for instructor-level courses at Performance Freediving. He was soon offered a job teaching with Performance Freediving, when he moved to Fort Lauderdale. Then, in 2009 Ted went to PFI’s annual competition. At the time, he was about a 80- to 90-foot freediver and weighed 230 pounds. He wasn’t in good shape at all, but after three weeks of training under the tutelage of world-reknowned freedivers Kirk Krack and Mandy-Rae Cruickshank, he did a 54 meter (177 -feet) freedive. “I was blown away by what I was capable of.” Ted spent a year working with Kirk and Mandy, while traveling around the country teaching the Intermediate Freediver program. Then, in 2010, a much more fit Ted went back to PFI’s annual competition. That year his new personal best was 213 feet, and currently he’s managed to up that to an impressive 279 feet. In June 2012, Ted was selected as the Team Captain for the US Freediving Team at the Freediving World Championships, and in 2013 he attained PFI Advanced Instructor and PFI Instructor Trainer, becoming the first and only PFI independent instructor to receive this rating. Oh yeah, and Ted also holds the record for hypoxic underwater swimming in the pool, having done 7 full lengths (175 meters) without a single breath. But most impressive? Ted has anemia. This means his blood can’t deliver oxgyen as efficiently to his muscles and brain as most of the world’s population. This means he has a blood hematocrit level of 34, easily 1/3 less than most athletes. This is a condition that would leave most folks huffing and puffing for air after climbing a flight of stairs. Obviously, anemia hasn’t stopped Ted. In our last podcast, which you can listen to here, Ted and I covered: -Why being cold and cold water can actually inhibit your ability to hold your breath… -How to use static apnea tables to enhance your ability to tolerate high levels of CO2 and low levels of O2… -Why training your mammalian dive reflex is so useful, even if you have zero desire to do long breathholds or freediving competition… -Why you should avoid hyperventilation and “blowing off CO2” prior to a breath hold… -The difference between Ted's breathing techniques and Wim Hof's breathing techniques… -And much more... Today Ted is back, and we take a deep dive (pun intended) into: -What happens to the body during free diving...8:30 Similar effects as yoga Alter how you breathe Interact with marine life Stress release -What is the "mammalian dive reflex" and why we would want to activate it...11:56 Genetically coded in every human on the planet Dolphins, seals, whales possess the mammalian dive reflex We all have it, but at different levels depending on experience Several components: Bradycardia; Body lowers demand for oxygen Fingers, toes constrict Pee reflex - peripheral extremities constrict We don't have conclusive data on how free diving affect

Mike currently practices in Bend, Oregon and Lexington, Kentucky in his precision medicine clinic. He is also co-founder of the Ultrasound Podcast, an educational podcast that has taught thousands of physicians all over the world how to use ultrasound, as well as Wild Health, his newest podcast focusing on health performance and longevity. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Dawson played two sports in college despite possessing "minimal talent"...8:55 Received two scholarships: tennis and soccer Became obsessed with performance; auto-didact Focused on helping others optimize their fitness and performance goals Ben had to figure out ways to train to overcome physical limitations in college - first foray into biohacking -The story behind the founding of Wild Health...13:05 Met 12 years ago, residency in Salt Lake City Interested in personal health for performance; competed with each other Became interested in genomics trying to fix Dr. Mallin's cholesterol numbers, which were very high Extremely high LDL; over 300 Used epidemiology; lots of guess work. Frustrated with conventional methods Saw need for adding genomic and microbiome data into the treatment Began studying "precision medicine" Treat patients primarily in person, in their respective clinics Data is important, but focus on a relationship, know patient's lifestyle, etc. -What the heck is "precision medicine"...17:45 First and foremost: not treating a patient as a statistic What may be true for a "population" may not necessarily be true for an individual Two individuals with the same problem (ex. insufficient Vitamin D) may require completely different treatments -Machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence used in precision medicine...20:10 Closest we can come to that at the moment is the human brain Difficulty in obtaining accurate data is in lifestyle factors Great potential; Onegevity (listen to my podcast) has great potential but too many variables Is there a "gold standard" test that Drs. Mallin and Dawson use on their patients Varies with each individual according to their needs and specific situation/lifestyle -Strategies Drs. Mallin and Dawson recommend in terms of athletic performance optimization...24:15 Depends on the individual Some need more recovery time than others Genetic tests to determine power vs. endurance Focus on doing what people like to do Optimize sleep: oura ring, Elite athletes, exercise enthusiasts Won't change based on genetic data Focus on overtraining by using data to educate them appropriately Can better identify a power vs. endurance approach with someone who is more passive in their regimen What Matt's daily exercise regimen looks like: Sauna: near infrared light, meditation (20 minutes) 90 lb. kettlebell; short sets (20 minutes) Reading (20 minutes Short, compressed exercise much more efficacious than a long run, long sets of strenuous activity HRV, breath work, -How Drs. Mallin and Dawson approach cognitive performance, as well as dementia and Alzheimers...36:50 Start with genetic testing Alzheimers easier to treat before symptoms start If

Ep 1031Altitude Training, Red Blood Cells & Shellfish: Are Clams The Next Big Performance Enhancing Supplement?
When it comes to nutrition benefits, clams are interesting creatures. For example, they are a well known as a source of iron. There are two types of iron - heme and non-heme iron. Heme-iron is more bioavailable, which means it is better absorbed and can be utilized by the body. Clams have both versions of iron, and a 3-ounce serving of clams can provide up to 24 mg of iron. But they are an excellent source of: - Omega-3 fatty acids - Protein - Vitamin A - Niacin - Potassium - Thiamin - Calcium - Thiamine - Folate - Choline - Magnesium - Sodium - Iron - Vitamin B12 - Selenium -Manganese -Vitamin C -Copper - Phosphorus -Riboflavin - Zinc - Vitamin E - Vitamin B6 - Vitamin K The list goes on and on...and my guest on today's show, Craig Dinkel - a supplement formulator, ultra-endurance athlete, altitude specialist and much more - has managed to study and harness the power of clams. On today's show we take a deep dive into clams, his new Altifuel supplement, and much, much more. During our discussion, you'll learn: -About Craig's adventure on the Hardest Hike in America (which we talked about his last time on the podcast)...4:30 Along the Sierra High route; At altitude (9-12k feet); 33 mountain passes Takes over 3 weeks to finish Pack ultra-light everything Big mistake: Bought ultra-light backpack Not designed to carry as much weight. Excess weight caused strain on lower back and glutes Get the weight higher up (mid-back or higher) Decided to pull out the 3rd day - potentially dangerous situation -Why Craig initially sought the health benefits of clams...19:20 Desiccated liver extract powder great for high-altitude events Clams have highest amount of iron and Vitamin B12 available Clams are a more potent version of the desiccated liver -Concerns about the level of contaminants found in clams...23:45 Use wild, farm-raised clams Small serving (3 oz.) of clams contain 1500% of daily iron intake Heme vs. non-heme iron Great source of minerals High amount of Omega 3 and Vitamin K2 -What Craig combines clams with to get the highest level of efficacy...30:30 Cordyceps, rhodiola, ginkgo biloba Rhodiola crenulata vs. Rosea Maintains sodium pulmonary transport in the body Helps reverse altitude sickness AMS - Acute Mountain Sickness Cordyceps - Oxygen producing capabilities with poly saccharides Why not add blue-green AFA to his ingredients... Strong nootropic effect Helps with muscle recovery Wanted most powerful source to work with blood development; clams superior. Ep 1029Building Muscle On A Ketogenic Diet, Little-Known Keto Mistakes, The Best Supplements For A Ketogenic Diet & Much More!
There are a lot of nasty secrets about the ketogenic diet that too many people are completely unaware of. It can cause the buildup of a wide variety of nutritional deficits… It can cause chronic inflammation… It can create an imbalance in omega fatty acids… It can exhaust your body's glycogen stores… But in my podcast episode with four time repeat guest Thomas DeLauer, you'll discover how to mitigate these issues and how to do a ketogenic diet the right way. Thomas is one of the leading experts in the world of chronic inflammation as well as the response of the human body to a low-carb diet. He is noted for his personal transformation from a 280-pound overweight corporate executive to not only being on the cover of health and fitness magazines worldwide but pioneering some of the mainstream awareness of auto-immune diseases and inflammation in general! Thomas has been highlighted in over 20 magazines showcasing his transformation and has been featured worldwide on the cover of Ironman Magazine, Muscle and Performance Magazine, Natural Muscle Magazine, ICON Magazine, Platform Magazine and Ironman Japan. His background is in Sports Psychology, although it is this passion for psychology coupled with a career in healthcare as a physician recruiter and owner of an ancillary lab services company that sparked his love for nutritional science and what makes the body tick. I first interviewed Thomas DeLauer in the episode The Ultimate Guide To Quelling Inflammation: Why Your Curcumin May Not Work, Surprising Effects Of Ginger Oil, Vegan Fish Oil Options & Much More! I then interviewed him again in the episode Does Alcohol Really Make You Fat, Which Alcohol Is Healthiest, Hidden Ingredients In Alcohol & Much More: The Ultimate Alcohol Damage Mitigation Guide. Thomas's third appearance was in the podcast episode Magnesium Supplementation: Everything You Need To Know About Dosing Magnesium, Timing Magnesium, Forms Of Magnesium & More! In this discussion, you'll discover: -How the ketogenic diet can be used to build, or at least spare, muscle mass...9:12 Rather than losing muscle, you're most likely losing intercellular water Lower levels of insulin mean the kidneys expel more water You'll lose glycogen at the beginning of the keto diet, then regain as you adapt to the diet Can see the effects in a very short period of time (24 hours or less) When you have beta hydroxybutyrate, there's a decrease in urinary nitrogen excretion compared to carb-rich diet Leucine gets oxidized more slowly; promotes protein synthesis (muscle sparing) The stimulus of weight training is critical -Whether the metabolic rate decreases while on the keto diet...19:40 Metabolic rate decreases in a long-term calorie deficit (3+ weeks) Studies show a small decline in Triiodothyronine (T3) while on keto diet; no change at all in T4 The metabolism of glucose takes a significant amount of T3 Less glucose intake = less T3 Importance of "refeeding" while on calorie restriction -How ketosis affects glycogen storage...27:00 When you become "fat-adapted" (your mitochondria becomes efficient at utilizing the fat) your body preferentially uses ketones Your body reserves the glycogen to be used only when needed -Some of the most common mistakes people make while on the ketogenic diet...38:30 Being concerned with eating "too much protein" You'll always have a glucose demand; same with carbs Brain cannot run on pure ketones Body allocates specific sugars for brain activity If you overeat on protein, worst you can do is eat too many calories Once you get very fat-adapted, the skeletal muscle has the ability to shortcut the ketones production process MCT has been shown to trigger metabolic increase Fats people use to get into ketosis Heavy dairy Omega 6's "Keto Wall": 90 days good results, then hit a wall Pay attention to inflammatory level of fatty acids Pay attention to "grass finished" vs. "grass fed" The fish oil conundrum Algal oil -Parting thoughts...1:08:05 How Thomas measures ketones: Keto Mojo meter Keyto Levl Resources from this episode: -Purathrive Keto Support Supplement designed by Thomas - 15% discount is automatically included at checkout. -Study: Very-low-carbohydrate diets and preservation of muscle mass -Study: Energy expenditure and body composition changes after an isocaloric ketogenic diet in overweight and obese men. -Kion Essential Amino Acids (EAA's) -My article on how to track ketones and glucose -KetoMoJo -Keyto -Levl Episode Sponsors: -Kion: Kion is your ultimate source for everything you need to achieve peak performance, look amazing, defy aging and live an adventurous, fulfilling, joyful and limitless life. Ep 102732 Natural Ways To Increase Testosterone (Without Getting Injections Or Hormone Replacement)
I recently spoke at an event called "A4M" in Las Vegas. My entire presentation was focused on 32 different natural ways to increase testosterone, with no injections or hormone replacement protocols required. I'm not against bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), but I do think one should explore as many natural alternatives as possible first, or, for even more bang for the buck, pair BHRT with the tactics you'll discover in this episode. A4M, which stands for "The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine" is dedicated to the advancement of tools, technology, and transformations in healthcare that can detect, treat, and prevent diseases associated with aging. They promote the research of practices and protocols that have the potential to optimize the human aging process. The organization is also dedicated to educating healthcare professionals and practitioners, scientists, and members of the public on biomedical sciences, breakthrough technologies, and medical protocols through our advanced education entity: Metabolic Medical Institute (MMI). Their event in Vegas each year is, in my opinion, well worth checking out. In this podcast, I will review the key biomarkers for achieving peak male health, along with the most potent and effective practices for optimizing biological variables for men's fertility and longevity. I will also unveil a host of little-known biohacks proven to enhance or restore peak testosterone and libido, along with how to practically implement a blend of ancestral wisdom and modern science to amplify sexual performance. You'll discover a multimodal approach to optimizing male sexual performance, learn how to identify key biomarkers to assess male health, and get the best ancient practices and modern scientific strategies that enhance or restore men's fertility and longevity. Oh, and by the way, women need testosterone too, and all these tactics will work for the ladies. -Workout Strategies to Optimize Testosterone...9:00 Sprint Study: Physiological and performance changes from the addition of a sprint interval program to wrestling training Airdyne bike Elliptical trainer Lift heavy stuff Article: How Many Reps Should You Do To Build Muscle? Ep 1025The Official Fasting Q&A With Ben Greenfield: Does Coffee Break Your Fast, Poor Sleep During Fasting, Amino Acids During Fasting & Much More!
Whew! The recent Kion 5 Day Fast has now come to a close - and we had over 10,000 people participate (that's a whole lot of food that wasn't eaten). During the fast, I received plenty of questions about fasting, such as: Does coffee help or harm your fast? What can I do to improve my sleep during - and after - a fast? What is the hormonal effect of fasting on males? And what about for women? What is the best kind of fasting if your goal is body composition (fat loss, muscle gain/maintenance)? Does fasting - especially 3-5 day extended fasts - slow down your metabolism? What type of training is best while fasting, and what type of training should be avoided? What other things can you do to enhance the benefits of a fast? (e.g. cryotherapy, enemas, etc.) How should you prepare for - and break - an extended fast? Is it OK to fast while breastfeeding or pregnant? Does your ability to absorb food and supplements increase after a fast? What are your thoughts on EAAs while fasting? Do they break a fast? And what about BCAAs? And many more! So in today's episode, I dive into an official fasting Q&A solosode. Enjoy! Here are the questions I'll be answering: -How does fasting for longevity differ from fasting for things like fat loss or circadian rhythm...7:45 Decreasing calorie intake 20-40% is most optimal way to regulate aging and increase life span Inhibit mTOR pathway, stimulate autophagy, induce ketogenesis Autophagy: "self eating" - not to be confused with apoptosis, which is cell death Autophagosomes to lysosomes "spring cleaning in your cells" Eating shuts down autophagy; fasting increases autophagy mTOR: mammalian target of rapamycin Energy enzyme ATP becomes ADP Every time you eat, you activate mTOR and suppress autophagy Ketosis: using fat as the primary source of fuel Less oxidative stress; slows the aging process My personal protocol: 12-16 hour intermittent fast daily 24 hour fast (dinner to dinner) twice a month Fasting mimicking diet (FMD) 4x/year -Does coffee help or harm your fast...16:50 Black coffee can enhance fatty acid mobilization from adipose tissue, alertness, metabolism, Coffee without any calories added (coconut oil, butter, etc.) will help the fast -I don't sleep well when I fast...20:05 Carb intake at night (dinner time) assists with sleep Shut down the sympathetic nervous system to get to sleep while fasting CBD (large amounts) Sleep Remedy Valerian Passion Flower Kava Kava Chinese skull cap You can get by on less sleep when you're fasting Don't forget the efficacy of breath work and meditation -What is the hormonal effect of fasting on males vs. females?...23:40 Lean and fit females do better with shorter fasts (12 hours); men are more versatile Insulin, growth hormone, responds favorably to a fast Noradrenaline increases with fasting Level of testosterone increase while fasting is unknown Podcast on kisspeptin -Does fasting slow down your metabolism?...30:45 -What other things can you do to enhance the benefits of a fast?...33:20 Berberine Bitter melon extract Rock lotus extract Kion Lean Sauna sessions Cold thermogenesis Podcast on liver cleanse -What type of training is best while fasting?...36:25 Anything that rapidly depletes glycogen or carb levels will have deleterious effects HIIT High weight, low reps; body building vs. weight lifting Walking, swimming, yoga; something you can do and have a conversation -How should you prepare for, and break, an extended fast?...38:55 When finished with a fast, you'll be less equipped to digest complex meals Go low and slow when reintroducing foods Soft cook veggies; Avocados, grass feed cottage cheese, eggs, No steaks; anything you need to chew for a long time Peter Attia's "nothing burger" -Is it okay to fast while breastfeeding or pregnant?...42:18 Religions encourage women to refrain from fasting while pregnant or breastfeeding Biochemical changes in milk in response to fasting Think "feast" not "famine" -Does your ability to absorb food and supplements increase after a fast?...45:38 Kion Flex Masszymes -Should I use amino acids to aid my fast?...48:15 Don't use them if your goal is cellular autophagy Can be very useful for resetting circadian rhythm, gut cleanup, spiritual benefits, etc. Can be a good mTOR activator Dry mouth, from amino acids: Spilanthes, electric berries Ginger, cayenne powder increases salivary production GI effects: Histamine Block Histamine X -And much more! Ep 1024How To Get 6 Gigabytes Of Data From Your Gut: The Fascinating Future Of Stool, Blood, Saliva & Urine Testing (From The Comfort Of Your Own Home).
Imagine an all-encompassing platform that allows you to keep track of all your blood, stool, saliva, and urine testing results, along with self-quantified data from wearables, and even pulls in all health testing you've done in the past as part of a single dashboard. And imagine that platform could then use highly advanced artificial intelligence to tell you exactly how to eat, how to supplement, how to exercise and much more. All from the comfort of your home, without needing to drive to an expensive lab for multiple blood draws or fill out confusing paperwork. That's exactly what the brand new company Onegevity Health has the money, technology and data to do, and so I decided it was high time I sat down with their two chief scientists to learn exactly how this process works. I've already sent in my own stool using their Gut/bio shotgun stool sequencing test that we discuss in this episode. My guests are Dr. Joel Dudley and Dr. Chris Mason. These guys are highly qualified and wicked smart. Dr. Dudley is currently Associate Professor of Genetics and Genomic Sciences, Endowed Chair of Biomedical Data Science, and founding Director of the Institute for Next Generation Healthcare at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Prior to Mount Sinai, he held positions as Co-founder and Director of Informatics at NuMedii, Inc. and Consulting Professor of Systems Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. His work, published in >120 peer-review publications, is focused at the nexus digital health, artificial intelligence (AI), scientific wellness, and healthcare delivery. His work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, MIT Technology Review, CNBC, and other popular media outlets. He was named in 2014 as one of the 100 most creative people in business by Fast Company magazine. He is co-author of the book Exploring Personal Genomics from Oxford University Press. Dr. Dudley received a BS in Microbiology from Arizona State University and an MS and PhD in Biomedical Informatics from Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Christopher Mason is currently an Associate Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine, with appointments at the Tri-Institutional Program in Computational Biology and Medicine between Cornell, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Weill Cornell Medicine, the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center, and the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute. He is also Director of the WorldQuant Initiative for Quantitative Prediction, which bridges prediction methods in finance with genomics. His work spanning >140 peer-reviewed publications has been featured on the cover of Science, Nature, and Cell journals as well as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Forbes, and other major media outlets. Dr. Mason was featured as a speaker at TEDMED and he was recognized in 2014 as one of the “Brilliant Ten” by Popular Science magazine. He completed his dual B.S. in Genetics and Biochemistry (2001) from University of Wisconsin-Madison, his Ph.D. in Genetics (2006) from Yale University, and then completed post-doctoral training in clinical genetics (2009) at Yale Medical School while jointly a post-doctoral Fellow of Genomics, Ethics, and Law at Yale Law School (2009). Ep 1023Anti-Aging Secrets Of The Billionaires, Does Telomere Testing Really Work, Fringe Supplements For Enhancing Longevity & Much More.
There's plenty of controversy these days around telomere testing. Is it accurate? Does it really show your so-called "biological vs. chronological" age? And once you do get your results, how can you lengthen your telomeres? In today's episode, I interview one of the world's leading experts on telomeres: Dr. Bill Andrews. Dr. Andrews is the Founder and CEO of Sierra Sciences, a company focused on finding ways to extend the human lifespan and health span through telomere maintenance. As a scientist, athlete and executive, he continually pushes the envelope and challenges convention. He has been featured in Popular Science, The Today Show and numerous documentaries on the topic of life extension including, most recently, the movie The Immortalists in which he co-stars with Aubrey de Grey. Bill has been a researcher in biotech since 1981, focusing on cancer, heart disease, and inflammation research; though his passion has always been aging. In the early to mid 1990’s, while at Geron Corporation, Bill led the research to discover both the RNA and protein components of human telomerase. He was awarded 2nd place as "National Inventor of the Year" in 1997. Bill earned his Ph.D. in Molecular and Population Genetics at the University of Georgia in 1981. And then served as Senior Scientist at Armos Corporation and Codon Corporation, Director of Molecular Biology at Berlex Biosciences and at Geron Corporation, and Director of Technology Development at EOS Biosciences, before starting Sierra Sciences in 1999. Bill is also a named inventor on over 50+ US issued patents on telomerase and author of numerous scientific research studies published in peer reviewed scientific journals. Bill is also an avid ultra-marathon runner. He regularly competes in 50 and 100+ mile races often finishing at the top of his age group. These grueling races have taken him all over the world to race in some of the most extreme environments, from Death Valley to the Himalayas. His running is presently featured in the movie The High. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The differing effects of short vs. long distance running on telomere lengths...9:25 Not the length per se, but how you do it. If it quits being fun, it's time to quit. Consistent running actually decreases inflammation; inconsistent or sporadic running is problematic -What are telomeres, and their role in our physical mortality...13:15 Think of each chromosome in the body as a "shoelace"; the little caps on the end of the laces are the telomeres Telomere shortening results in declining health with aging Each time our cells divide, our telomeres get a bit shorter DNA and cell replication Cells can't replicate DNA all the way to the end Cells eventually "crash"; lose the ability to function It's possible to calculate the maximum lifespan of a human based on telomere shortening rates Attention anti-agers: you can't do it unless you can figure out how to prevent telomere shortening Book by Jim Mellon: Juvenescence: Investing in the age of longevity -How telomeres can be lengthened, and how to lower the rate by which they shorten...19:30 Telomeres are not shortened when reproductive cells replicate Telomerase prevents the shortening of telomeres Telomerase is too big to get into cells Senescent cell: a cell that has lost the ability to divide Shutting down senescent cells actually inhibits cancer cells "Chromosome rearrangement": a precursor to cancer Shortened telomeres hinders cancer treatments such as chemotherapy Keeping telomeres long is the best way to treat cancer should it enter the body -Telomere tests: do they work, and how accurate are they...35:10 Accuracy is extremely low in measuring biological age Best available is fluorescence in situ hybridization Life Length; Repeat Diagnostics PCR, a popular means of testing, is "manipulatable"- uncontrollable changes Test yourself multiple times; use different names Telomere Restriction Fragment is Dr. Andrews favorite test Difference in costs: More accurate = more expensive Range: $100-300 -The research Dr. Andrews is conducting on increasing telomerase activity...44:20 Two ways to produce telomerase inside the cells Find a way to turn the gene "on" in preexisting cells Deliver a brand new gene to the cell; turned on more than a regular gene Decreasing the rate of shortening the telomeres "Tug of War" analogy Not currently possible to reverse the aging process 1-3 years away from having the tug of war a "tie"; meaning the aging process comes to a halt, then possibly we'll see aging process reversed Real life products in the marketplace based on Dr. Andrews' research at Sierra Science...50:30 Dr. Andrews focuses solely on research; partners with pharmaceutical companies for marketing, distribution, etc. TAM-818: a supplement that increases telomerase levels Dr. Andrews takes every supplement that's been shown to increase telomerase levels -Dr. Andrews' personal anti-aging protocol...53:45 TA65 Isagenesis TAM-818 You can't design

Ep 1022The Renegade Pharmacist: How To Increase The Effects Of Psilocybin, The Secrets Of Colostrum, Fixing Constipation With Breathwork & More
Niraj Naik, my guest on today's show (and the same guy who invented the crazy holotropic-style breathwork protocol I do in my sauna) is a qualified pharmacist who comes from a background of working long hours for several years as a community pharmacist. Becoming a certified “legal drug dealer” at the ripe age of 24, he got to witness first-hand, many clients going home with shopping bags full of drugs each month, rarely getting better and usually going on to suffer from other diseases. He also learnt of the debilitating side effects of the prescription medication which drove many of the patients to have to take more and more drugs to ease the side effects. Curious to find ways to improve his own health he attended several health seminars and discovered an in-depth approach on how to reach optimum health and vitality by understanding the true origin of disease and how to prevent it. After experiencing great benefits with his own health, Niraj was motivated to devise a scheme to see if he could also help his suffering patients. He incorporate a lifestyle plan called his "healthy shopping lists' that includes simple food swaps, tools and websites to support their specific condition. Within two weeks he received testimonials from patients who were starting to get better and within a few months some being able to lower the dose or complete come off their medication. After an arduous battle trying to get his novel approach accepted into the mainstream that resulted in a lot of stress and disillusionment, in 2010 he was diagnosed with a stress related illness, ulcerative colitis, that left him housebound for over 10 months. He was told by doctors and nurses there existed no cure and he would need to be on medication for the rest of his life. Like his patients, Niraj suffered from side effects of his medication to the point he felt completely hopeless and even suicidal. He was then left with a choice that would be a major turning point in his life. Test out a new drug or have his colon removed. He decided to choose option 3, a path not yet known by conventional medicine. So began his search to learn from people who had great success with either curing themselves or others from chronic illness. He learned a combination of natural treatments including Ayurvedic practices, and dietary recommendations from Paleo and SCD. He studied healing methods through meditation, yoga and mind power techniques like self hypnosis and NLP. He even discovered the powerful techniques of sound and music therapy as tools for reducing stress and promoting self healing. Niraj finally broke free from the burdens of his illness, without medication. The experience of illness has allowed him to completely reinvent his life and discover a new passion for helping others to do the same. His speciality is helping people recover, prevent or reduce the dependency for longterm medication for the metabolic diseases of diabetes, heart disease and obesity and auto-immune disease where stress is an underlining factor in the cause. Niraj is now a professional musician, holistic health expert and entrepreneur. He runs several successful websites that help others who suffer from stress-related, chronic diseases through his self-composed, captivating meditation music and online courses. Niraj has composed music for healing centres, spas and therapists worldwide. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The story behind Niraj's famous infographic on how a can of Coke affects the human body...7:10 Was friends with a world-famous psychic "Only one thing worse than bad publicity, and that's no publicity." Saw a conspicuous link between sugary drinks and metabolic diseases; doctors weren't aware of it (in 2005 timeframe) Frustrated with the "dumbed-down" state of the healthcare industry First published by truththeory.com; Became #1 trending article on Facebook within a few weeks Firms literally pay millions of dollars for the type of authority the infographic gave Niraj Follow up infographic on Diet Coke was equally successful -How Niraj used alternative medicine to heal himself of some serious health issues...16:45 Very little awareness of the effects of diet to overall health (2009 timeframe) Created "Healthy shopping lists" as a pharmacist in the U.K. (employed by a major pharmacy chain) Niraj's boss and biggest supporter left for another job, was left to fend for himself; his practices were deemed by corporate as "too controversial" - they watered down everything he said Negative emotions/thoughts manifested as physical symptoms; became very ill (ulcerative colitis) Severely depressed; considered suicide (31 years old) G.O.D. "Gift of Desperation" Met a mentor who encouraged him "You'll get over this and change the lives of many people" Combination of colostrum, breath work, and a change in perception -Examples of ayurvedic principles used to heal the gut...25:22 Colostrum Efficacious for improving digestive health Health of the mother (including mental healt

Ep 1021Is Biohacking Bad? Ancestral Living Vs. Modern Science: Should We Return To Our Roots?
My life is a little bit...strange. As an immersive journalist, self-experimenter and self-professed “biohacker”, I do relatively unconventional things to upgrade my body and brain. For example, I have this blood glucose monitor installed in my arm. It monitors my blood sugar 24-7. I wear a cognition-enhancing laser light helmet at work during the day, and stand naked in front of a giant red light panel while I’m replying to emails. I give myself weekly IV’s full of a cocktail of special vitamins. I’ve also had the fat sucked from my back and the marrow from my bones to concentrate my own stem cells, and had surgery to have these cells placed into every joint of my body and mainlined into my bloodstream. I have tens of thousands of dollars of advanced medical technologies housed in my basement. You get the idea. I’m not normal. But as a man who spends much of my life immersed in the modern health and longevity movement, attending anti-aging conferences and researching all the newfangled things people are doing these days to upgrade their bodies, I often survey the landscape of fringe supplements, biohacks, and anti-aging technologies and wonder… ...would our ancestors laugh at us? When it comes to living a long and healthy life, would their ancestral wisdom beat our modern science, hands down? After all, despite our modern infatuation with longevity and optimized bodies and brains, we are not strikingly healthier or longer-living than previous generations. In today's podcast, adapted from my recent TedX Coeur D' Alene Talk, I'll tackle this topic in detail. You'll discover: -Why modern medicine, for all its marvels, may not be all it's cracked up to be...4:10 CDC reports life expectancy has dropped 3 consecutive years. It's a false assertion to assume we'll live significantly longer than previous generations "Life expectancy" is calculated by insurance, mutual fund companies as number of years after retirement, not after birth. We would be seeing many more 100+ year olds; not the case We have a better chance of surviving childhood (disease, etc.) but not necessarily living longer. Our ancestors didn't always live nasty, brutish, short lives -Popular current fads to extend human lifespan...7:43 Vampire therapy, parabiosis (young blood) Ancient Greeks considered to blood a magic elixir Pliny the Elder, Homer, wrote about the healing efficacy of others' blood GDF11, a primary anti-aging proteins activated by young blood transfusion, is increased by oxytocin Stem cells More accessible than in years past My "biological age" dropped from 37 to 20 after my first stem cell transfusion Men's Health article on stem cells featuring Ben Outside Magazine article featuring Ben Dietary adjustments to increase/enhance stem cells Food compounds, superfoods: colostrum, aloe vera, etc. Cryopreservation Modern day mummification Metformin slightly modified version of a compound that was discovered in the French lilac plant (goat's rue) Wired Magazine: Forget the Blood of Teens Adverse side effects: Lactic acidosis Mitochondrial disruption Vitamin B12 deficiency Increase risk for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Natural alternatives: Bitters, herbs, wild plants, bitter melon Rapamycin Inhibits excessive activation of immune cells via MTOR Upregulation of cellular cleanup mechanisms called autophagy Increases risk of infectious diseases and diabetes Natural alternatives: spermidine Intermittent fasting Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) Levels markedly decrease with age Natural alternatives: Raw honey Fermented foods Sauna sessions Pau d Arco tea -Supplements and medicines used by our ancestors...19:25 -Natural ways to enhance our vision...22:45 Ancestors trained their vision; they didn't look at screens all day Plant compounds known to enhance vision: Zeaxanthin Carotenoids (kale, spinach, bell peppers) Innate ability to "see" in the absence of light or even sight -Natural hearing enhancement...24:45 Hunter gatherers were better equipped, physically, with their ears; perhaps because of time spent outdoors attuned to the frequencies of nature Turnip greens, collard greens, parsley, mustard greens, broccoli, etc. shown to decrease risk of hearing loss Adjusting your diet would be far cheaper and less convenient than what some self-experimenting types are doing (ear implants) -The natural "sixth sense" within us to navigate to True North...26:42 We possess a tiny amount of magnetite in our ethmoid bone (located between the eyes in the nasal cavity) Researchers suggest this built-in compass made hunting, migration, etc. possible We have perhaps lost this ancestral skill with the advent of road maps, GPS navigation -Natural ways to enhance our brains...27:30 Walnuts are rich in omega fatty acids, melatonin Lion's mane mushroom Bacopa flower (memory) Green tea (cognition) Psilocybin All of the above have been used for centuries, if not millennia -Natural alternatives to things like photobiomodulation, light therapy, PEMF, etc...29:15 G

Ep 1020Special 2-Part Anti-Aging Podcast - Basic & Ancestral Tactics To Enhance Longevity (No Fancy Biohacks Required).
When it comes to living a long life, demographers, epidemiologists, gerontologists and other researchers on aging have long puzzled over the theoretical question of the maximum potential for human lifespan, along with the host of proposed practices we can implement that help us achieve that potential. There is, after all, in the past decade alone a veritable laundry list of tactics we can use to make ourselves more age resistant, from nutrients, vitamins and pills such as Vitamin D, aspirin, metformin, magnesium, pterostilbene, resveratrol, blueberry extract, nicotinamide ribosideand rhodiola to lifestyle practices such as shivering our asses off, self-imposed starvation, fecal transplants, strict veganism, injecting into ourselves growth hormone, testosterone, stem cells, exosomes, the blood of younger healthy humans and speaking of younger humans, simply “having more children”. Fact is, compared to the Biblical Methuselah, who purportedly lived to the ripe old age of 969, we don’t seem to be moving the anti-aging dial much. In fact, researchers estimate that in the U.S. today, the average adult life expectancy is still only about 77 years and, disturbingly, now plummeting due to high rates of chronic diseases (many of which are preventable with simple lifestyle changes you’ll learn about in this podcast). Currently – despite the Chinese lore of the recently perished “256-year-old” Li Ching Yuen, the longest-lived modern person in the world on actual record is Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at the exact age of 122 years and 164 days. Yet, when we observe nature, some amount of immortality, or at least a significant amount of enhanced life extension, appears to be achievable. Take the naked mole rate, for example. The naked mole rat’s cells themselves seem to make proteins – the molecular machines that make bodies work – more accurately than us humans, preventing it from developing age-related illnesses like Alzheimer’s. Unlike humans, the way these ugly little creatures handle glucose doesn’t seem to change with age either, reducing their susceptibility to diseases like diabetes. The naked mole rat isn’t the only animal scientists are now probing to pick the lock of long life. With a rampant metabolism and a heart rate of 1,000 beats a minute, the common hummingbird should, on paper, be riddled with rogue free radicals (the oxygen-based chemicals that make mammals old by gradually destroying DNA, proteins and fat molecules), but the tiny birds seem relatively bulletproofed against heart disease. Then there are lobsters, which seem to have evolved a protein which repairs the telomere tips of their DNA, allowing for a decreased rate of telomere shortening that most animals are incapable of. Finally, as if rats, hummingbirds and lobsters weren’t enough to make us longevity seeking humans a bit jealous, we mustn’t forget one animal on Earth that may hold the master key to immortality: the Turritopsis dohrnii, also known as the “Immortal Jellyfish”. Most jellyfish, when they reach the end of life, die and melt into the sea, but not the Turritopsis dohrnii. Instead, it sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor, where its body folds in on itself – assuming the jellyfish equivalent of the fetal position – and regenerates back into a baby jellyfish in a rare biological process called transdifferentiation, in which its old cells somehow transform into young cells. So is there a human equivalent of the type of immortality “powers” these animals seem to have tapped into? Many in popular anti-aging and longevity circles have suggested that – in the next several decades – we could indeed unlock the secrets to living to approximately 120 to 140 years old, and many biohackers and anti-aging enthusiasts such as Peter Diamandis, Peter Thiel, Larry Page, Elon Musk and Tony Robbins and even lil ol’ me are striving to live greater than 160 years old. The purpose of this podcast is not to delve into the relatively advanced longevity secrets of these fringe biohackers, but instead to reveal everything you need to know about why the world’s more traditionally living longevity all-stars not only live longer but also tend to live better. They have strong connections with their family and friends. They’re active. They wake up in the morning knowing that they have a purpose, and the world, in turn, reacts to them in a way that propels them along. An overwhelming majority of them still enjoy life. They share these common behavioral and lifestyle characteristics, such as family coherence, avoidance of smoking, plant-based diet, moderate and daily physical activity, social engagement, and situations where people of all ages are socially active and integrated into the community, despite all of them being from different areas of the world and of different races, nationalities and religions. That’s not to say that biohacking for longevity and better living through science isn’t beneficial. After spending nearly two decades deeply

Ep 1019A Biohacking Clinic Straight From The Deck Of Star Trek, The Minimum Effective Dose Of Exercise, How Ben Greenfield Fasts, Increasing Mitochondrial Density & Much More!
NextHealth is a brand new, cutting-edge, biohacking facility that is taking California by storm. In this conversation between Ben Greenfield and Dr. Shah of NextHealth Clinic in LA, you'll hear... ...a magnitude of information related to health and wellness, including: diets, exercise regimens, herbs, music, CBD, lab tests and much more, recorded straight from the NextHealth Clinic in LA, which is like the deck of a Star Trek spaceship and a complete playground for biohackers and health or longevity enthusiasts! This particular episode will teach you how to become the best version of yourself by taking advantage of the information that’s out there in the health, science, wellness and fitness sectors. The barrier to entry to biohacking and self-optimization is becoming far more cost effective and there’s a plethora of information, supplements, tests and programs out there that are becoming more mainstream. Finally, if you like what you hear, you can click here for $500 savings on a full body MRI and full genome sequencing package from NextHealth. Please also note that I will be speaking at NextHealth in Century City on January 30 at 7pm, and the event is completely free to the public to attend! More details below. In this conversation, you'll discover: -How to increase longevity using ancestral wisdom and biohacking through telomere analysis...8:05 Telomere analysis is not an ironclad measurement but is efficacious in conjunction with other analyses. Longevity markers: Grip strength Walking speed Ability to sit and stand Face Inflammatory markers Track your chronological age, and your health while you're on this earth Humans crave variety, improvement We've been led to believe the top of the totem pole is our workouts, strength, etc. Look for ways to "scratch the itch" for self-improvement other than your workout Find the "minimum effective dose" vs. an all or nothing approach Sitting around waiting to see the chiropractor; at airports Find ways to be active throughout your day to day activities; get creative! Walking Desk changed Dr. Shah's life Also check out the Hex Bar Lift occasionally, sprint occasionally, move all day long. -My thoughts on High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)...19:35 Two ways to increase your mitochondrial density. Both are effective Long, slow aerobic training Higher intensity, brief spurts of exercise 1-2x/week, do 4 extremely hard efforts for 30 seconds; rest (or low-intensity exercise) 4 minutes between. Tabata set: 4 Minutes; 20 seconds hard, 10 seconds easy. VO2 max -What my diet looks like...26:25 Varies widely due to extensive international travel schedule I love to eat whatever local food is available While at home, my diet most resembles the Weston A. Price diet There's not a single "perfect" human diet Eating healthy goes in phases; maybe depending on a certain condition they have at a given time You can try more variety once you've been on a restrictive diet for a period of time (2-6 months) I eat a whole foods diet; seasonal Eat a whole foods diet as much as possible; use all self-quantification data available to you (ancestral, blood, etc.) Epigenetics: eating according to your ancestry -My thoughts on testing the microbiome...37:50 The biome of the large intestine isn't necessarily reflective of the small intestine. As testing becomes more popular, data is collected; solutions to particular problems are possible. AI can be used to sort through the vast amount of data Probiotics not effective in populating the gut. People with bacteria deficiencies have GI, digestive issues; not enough fiber and fermented foods -My sleep habits, and how I track my sleep...43:20 Tracking can be a distraction at first as you're so focused on the data Eventually, you just get used to it I use the Oura Ringto track my sleep (use code: GREENFIELDOURA to save $$$) What I track in my sleep sleep latency deep sleep percentages REM and light sleep percentages Number of times I woke Body temp Heart rate variability Low hanging fruits when it comes to tracking sleep: My quality of sleep is correlated to the amount of bright sunshine I get before noon Anything that targets the endocannabinoid system is helpful for deep sleep Breathwork helps with sleep latency Box breathing 4-7-8 breathing Melatonin is effective when traveling west to east -Why I travel so extensively when I don't really need to...57:05 -The relationship between fasting and circadian rhythm, overall health and longevity...59:18 It's difficult to see the benefits; stoic approach Daily 12-16 hour intermittent fast 3-4 times a year, do a 5-day fasting-mimicking diet Fast Saturday dinner to Sunday dinner, twice a month -The pros and cons of drugs such as rapamycin and metformin...1:08:00 I don't use rapamycin; I get sufficient autophagy and mTOR through fasting I don't take metformin either Good for longevity, not so much for athletes Increased risk for diabetes, Alzheimer's, etc. after prolonged use Other studies have shown the oppo

Ep 1018What You Didn't Know About CBD & THC, Fixing Lyme Disease, The Full Body Blood Change Reboot, Peptides 101, Hyperthermia & Much More!
Dr. Matthew Cook of Bioreset Medical. is one of the smartest, most cutting-edge physicians I've ever met, and this is part 2 of my amazing two-part interview with him, recorded from my home in Spokane, WA. You can listen to part 1 at "Immortal Cells, Biohacking Pain, Killing Lyme, Stem Cell Confusion, How Ketamine Works & Much More With Dr. Matt Cook." During that first episode we discussed: ...how he's used the nootropic methylene blue to solve a difficult medical case... ...how he's upgrading stem cells to make them far more potent... ...how he's treating depression effectively in as little as 20 minutes with a special brew that includes ketamine, NAD and vitamin IVs... ...how he's reversing musculoskeletal disorders using something called "hydrodissection"... Dr. Cook founded BioReset Medical Corporation and as acting President, operates a Regenerative Medicine and Pain Medicine practice that offers leading-edge non-surgical solutions in orthopedic medicine, sports medicine, regenerative pain medicine, and stem cell medicine. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist with over 20 years of experience in medical practice. Currently, Dr. Cook is President of California Anesthesia and Medical Director of the National Surgery Center, Los Gatos, CA. In addition, he sits on the scientific advisory board of several high profile medical companies including BM DOC, FREMEDICA & VASPER SYSTEMS. Dr. Cook’s early career as an anesthesiologist and medical director of an outpatient surgery center that specializes in sports medicine and orthopedic procedures provided invaluable training in the skills that are needed to become a leader in the emerging fields of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound imaging, nerve hydrodissection, and stem cell medicine. During this Part 2 discussion, you'll discover: -Dr. Cook's Opinion on the use of beta blockers in preparing for performance...9:30 Gave a talk to over 2,000 doctors early in his career Was given a beta blocker by an associate; Heart rate went down to 25 bpm. Never taken another beta blocker since. Sweet spot for everything. Biohacking too high or too low is problematic Has used beta blockers with anesthesia to calm the heart rate. -Plasmapheresis, what Dr. Cook's considers to be one of the "next big things" in the medical industry...11:58 Plasmapheresis A method of removing blood plasma from the body by withdrawing blood, separating it into plasma and cells, and transfusing the cells back into the bloodstream. It is performed especially to remove antibodies in treating autoimmune conditions. It has also been studied as a treatment for neurocognitive and Neuro degenerative problems like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. It’s kind of like an oil change in your vehicle. If there is systemic inflammation, often that inflammation is in the plasma of the blood. Different from parabiosis Same procedure as Dr. Mark Urdahl and I discussed on the podcast a few months ago. (Listen to the episode here.) Most people who seek plasmapheresis have a serious conditions like Lyme, dementia, Parkinsons, etc. Effect on a healthy person: No negative effect. Nothing wrong with a thorough examination Length of the procedure: 2-3 hours, 1x/week for 6 weeks. -Dr. Cook's thoughts on the use of cannabinoids in his practice...18:50 We have cannabinoid receptors in our brains. Part of our nervous system is called the endocannabinoid system. Expect a surge of use in the next 10 years among health optimizers and chronically ill people. "Entourage effect" Unicorn: a company that is purifying cannabinoids and get all the solvents out Delta 8 THC vs. Delta 9. Rick Simpson Oil: highly potent What are terpines? The terpines are the flavor the smell and much of the effect. The effect of sativa or the effect of the indica is from the terpines in that strain. Can be up to 100 terpines in a strainCan also control flavonoids.... Unicorn can make them bioavailability We are going to be studying these blends Do you give a f*ck? Here's how to follow what's up with the Unicorn brand: http://unicorncannabis.net -Dr. Cook's approach to dealing with gut issues...31:40 Get a sense of symptoms Test for parasites, the microbiome, stool sample Food goes through the stomach, to small intestine. Small intestine is sterile Goes into large intestine, trillions of bacteria Parasites live in the small intestine SIBO: small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (Listen to my podcast with Dr. Michael Ruscio here) Anti-inflammatory diets Collagen, bone broth, colostrum is efficacious in healing the gut. Everything is fixable. "Bio Reset" -What Dr. Cook likes and uses in his practice with peptides...43:55 Peptide is a smaller version of a protein BPC 157 used in combination with stem cells and treating GI problems TB 500 Thymosin used for chronic infections Peptides becoming common for treatment of chronic illnesses Immune over response and under response - Immune modulation Nootropic peptides: Seamax, Sealance -What is "hyperthermia"?...51:22 Use

Ep 1017The Hidden Health Epidemic Nobody Is Talking About (& 6 Ways To Protect Yourself From It)
I’m an introvert through and through. A multitude of personality tests that I’ve taken, including the Quiet Revolution test and the Myers-Briggs analysis, have backed this up. Perhaps it’s genetics or perhaps it’s because I was homeschooled K-12 in rural Idaho. Whatever the case may be, I’m “that guy” at busy conferences who ducks away to my room to go recharge my batteries every few hours – something I can only accomplish by escaping the crowds and being entirely by myself. I thrive on long walks, multi-hour hikes and extended bike rides – usually alone. I become exhausted at networking events and cocktail parties and often slip away early to sleep, to curl up with a good book, or simply to meditate and breathe. Even at family events, I can often be found off in some quiet corner reading or strumming on my guitar or ukulele. As a matter of fact, when I was a child, my parents had to coax me, persuade me and yes, even threaten me with punishment, to actually get my nose out of my book and be gracious enough to ever so briefly emerge from my bedroom to say a quick hello to any guests we had at the house, after which I would subsequently rush back to my room and curl up once again with my book (I’d often read until 3 or 4am and consume several books each day and night!). But at the same time, even though I’m completely happy being a loner, I now go out of my way to ensure that (as uncomfortable or unnatural as it was for me initially) I spend plenty of time carving out a couple hours each night for a family dinner and nighttime family rituals, for connecting with old and new friends, for attending networking events, for scheduling plenty of book signings and meet-and-greets, for traveling to crowded conferences and for actively engaging in local church, community and charity events. In fact, if one didn't know better, they might honestly mistake me for a bit of a social butterfly. So - aside from my desire to not be an arrogant, hard-to-approach, uncommunicative @$$hole - why have I begun to incorporate such a strong emphasis in my life on optimizing friends, charity, community relationships and love? As it turns out, there is a fascinating link between love, family, social connectedness and relationships and a longer lifespan. I'm about to supply you with a host of practical love tips to include in your own life for a longer lifespan and better health. After all, owning an amazing body and a sharp mind can all be for naught if loneliness, sadness, inflammation, high blood pressure and accelerated aging are all occurring due to a lack of friendships, social relationships, community, charity and love. This podcast will teach you exactly why and how to include these important components into your own body, mind and spirit routine. During this solosode, you'll discover: -How loneliness, or "social isolation" negatively affects your physical health...8:30 Becoming more and more of a problem worldwide Correlated with the increased use of "social" media Physicians are simply not trained how to deal with it Can affect anyone, anywhere. Not limited to a particular demographic, i.e. introverts, socially awkward, depressed, etc. Affects a person physically as well as emotionally Ancestral roots of our social needs; "loneliness" meant the tribe had abandoned you. Dunbar's Number: Total # of companions we can effectively socialize: 150 12 people in an "inner circle" Social media is effective for facilitating community, but lacks the deep connections you get from face to face We don't know our neighbors by name and by face We're not experiencing relationships the way we're programmed to Signals and "vibes" we give off in face to face -The correlation between smartphone prevalence and loneliness...16:15 Smartphone addiction and social anxiety Kids who spend more than 3 hours per day on a phone are at higher risk of suicide and depression "Not an exaggeration to say the iGen is on the brink of the worst social mental health crisis in decades..." Is it possible to develop personal relationships via an impersonal medium made up of algorithms? Book: Reclaiming Conversations (link) Use of email depersonalizes social interactions Emotional intelligence suffers Book: I'd Like You More If You Were More Like Me (link) -Practical things you can do to fight loneliness...24:12 Book: Blue Zones "The power of love" It's more efficacious to give love than to receive love from others Expressing gratitude increases your empathy toward others Altruism: Helping others who are stressed helps with your own stress levels Don't be kind, help others etc. because you think it's going to improve your health; do it because you want to do it. Book: Never Eat Alone (Link) -The chemistry behind face to face interactions...38:20 Pacinian corpuscles; travels to the Vagus nerve Release of oxytocin (don't have sex before buying a used car) Seratonin (similar to anti-depressants) Pheromones -6 ways to enhance your life and longevity with love...47:15 Volunt

Ep 1016Busting the Myth of the Pre and Post Workout Meal: Fasted Exercise and Its Benefits
Consider this... Billions of people around the world don't know what or even when their next meal will be. Because of this uncertainty, they move as little as possible so as to conserve as much energy as they can. Meanwhile, you and I have the luxury of actually choosing notto eat while food is in abundance. And then actually burningcalories while we are in a fasted state. This podcast is the recording of a talk I gave on the topic of Fasted Exercise to the Live It to Lead It conference in Las Vegas, NV this past month. In this episode, you'll learn... -How I got introduced to the concept of pre and post-workout fasting during my years as a body builder...7:05 Conventional thought at the time: Eat a lot right after workout, to get into the "recovery window" Snack and graze Explored other options when I got into endurance training Discovered "ketosis" in 2013 Amino acids Dominic D'Agostino -Busting the myth of snacking and pre/post-workout meals...12:45 Importance of the post-workout meal is vastly decreased if you haven't been fasting prior to the workout. Only benefit from a performance standpoint is if you workout again within 8 hours. After 24 hours, the body naturally replenishes its glycogen levels. If you've eaten prior to a workout, you don't need to replenish aminos, glycogen, etc. I bend the rules if I'm working with someone who needs to build body mass. -What fasted exercise actually is...18:05 Exercising in a state of glycogen depletion A light workout in a fasted state is preferable (in the morning) For evening workouts, you'll have not eaten since lunch, then you can eat after working out, but it's not essential to do so immediately. -The 10 benefits of fasted exercise...25:10 Burning more fat Anti-aging effect Better brain function Increased growth hormone levels Improved insulin sensitivity Increased testosterone Enhanced fat loss Better endurance More stable gut during exercise Hunger management -Practical ways to do fasted workouts...41:15 Exercise before breakfast Need to include carbs in breakfast? Only if you're going to workout again within 8 hours. Don't eat dinner for an hour or two after late-afternoon or early-evening workout. Use supplements Amino acids Ketone salts Potassium Electrolytes -A few cautions...47:10 "Bonking" Decreased intensity (depending on the scenario) Post-workout hyper caloric compensation (stuffing your face) And much more! Ep 1015CBD vs. THC For Sleep, Microdosing Psilocybin, Can You Overdo Modafinil, How To Re-Program Your Body Language & Much More With Jordan Harbinger
Jordan Harbinger is back! In my first podcast episode with Jordan we talked about: -What kind of body language mistakes that fit people with nice bodies make which hold them back socially… -How to reprogram your brain to actually like and appreciate things like kale smoothies and ginger juice… -A simple eye trick to get you to “fake it until you make it” with extreme social confidence… -Why bars and clubs are not necessarily the places to go to to enhance your social intelligence and ability to build relationships… -How I went from eating fast food, being ultra-shy and reading fantasy novels to being named as one of the world's top 100 most influential people in health and fitness… Jordan has always had an affinity for Social Influence, Interpersonal Dynamics and Social Engineering, helping private companies test the security of their communications systems and working with law enforcement agencies before he was even old enough to drive. He has spent several years abroad in Europe and the developing world, including South America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and speaks several languages. He has also worked for various governments and NGOs overseas, traveled through war-zones and been kidnapped -twice. He’ll tell you - the only reason he’s still alive and kicking is because of his ability to talk his way into (and out of), just about any type of situation. On his podcast, he gets deep into the untapped wisdom of the world's top performers -- from legendary musicians to intelligence operatives, iconoclastic writers to visionary change-makers, deconstructing the playbooks of the most successful people on earth. Shame for their own inactivity The more we look at someone and think they're relatable to us, the more any change in them makes us more uncomfortable or resentful Rather than congratulate them, people find excuses why achievers are snobby, arrogant, etc. People don't like their shortcomings highlighted -Non-verbal communication techniques Jordan teaches to be better received if you're an athlete or high achiever...43:40 Hidden anxiety regarding sense of self Motivations change as you progress through life; Comparison can be efficacious to your self-development and also very unhealthy High achievers shirk others because they don't provide any motivation Soon you realize you have no close friends, it's affecting your emotional health. How to behave when you're "that guy" to allow others to be more comfortable around you. Make yourself more relatable Smile more; loosen the jaw -Recreating "authentic" body language, even if it feels inauthentic...57:30 What we think is "authentic" is often us manipulating our body language to give off a desired vibe. -Jordan's observations on an annoying body language quirk that I have...1:03:40 -And much more! Ep 1014The Most Transformative Process I've Ever Discovered For Crystal-Clear Clarity, Purpose & Direction In Life
Four months ago, my wife and I went through the most transformational process we have ever embarked upon. It was called Lifebook Although you can now go through the entire Lifebook process online, no matter where you live in the world, we did ours in Estonia - jam-packed into a room with over 20 other individuals who, like us, wanted to get ultimate clarity, direction and purpose for each aspect of their lives. I think of my Lifebook as me, in a book. In other words, if I were to, God forbid, get hit by a bus tomorrow, someone would be able to hand my children my Lifebook and say, "Here. Here is your Dad, in a book. This is everything he stands for, believes in and values, and everything he would have wanted to teach to you about life. My Lifebook now holds a precious place in the mantle above the fireplace in our home, and has also been integrated into our family trust. As you can imagine, I'm very proud and excited of this discovery, and I wanted to get the inventor of the Lifebook on the podcast: Jon Butcher - who Chicago Magazine dubbed as "the guy with the most perfect life". Along with his wonderful wife Missy, Jon is a serial entrepreneur and the creators of Lifebook, an extraordinary system that has helped thousands transform their lives from ordinary to a living masterpiece. Jon and Missy have learned how to defy aging, experience long-lasting love, redefine education and build the perfect living environment (trust me, I've been to their home and it is a complete dream house). Drawing from deeply personal experiences, Jon and Missy, along with their partner, Joe Polish, also founded the Artists For Addicts project. Its mission is to change the global conversation surrounding addiction from one of judgment to one of compassion. During our discussion, you'll learn... -Why Jon and his wife Missy are moving to Hawaii after 30 years living in Chicago...8:25 Consistent with the purpose of the Lifebook: To find clarity in your "life vision". Hawaii has always been a special place for Jon and Missy, even after visiting nearly 100 countries. More leisure, less activity in day to day life. -About Jon's unique philosophy on raising his children...11:45 "Respectful disregard" for the status quo. Look at options, make a decision independent of what others may choose. Underwent a "vision quest" recently with his family. Historical examples of boys becoming men via a rite of passage Underwent Vision Quest with a Shaman in France. Targeted specifically to Jon's 14 year old son, family did it in support The son learned the hard way to remember to pack all your gear. Was a profound experience for Jon personally and especially for his son. The Earth can heal you. Modern kids don't learn to deal with real hardship. Check out my recent podcast on Vision Quest's with Tim Corcoran -The story of how Lifebook came to be...27:40 Living fast and furious in his 20's; caught up with him in early 30's. Two panic attacks Agoraphobia, nervous breakdown Jon's dad ordered two self-development programs: Attacking Anxiety; Personal Power 2 8 year process of healing Jon kept notes from all his self-development programs in a binder: Breakthroughs, Goals, etc. Eventually focused on 12 categories to create an extraordinary life Evolved over a period of 15 years; never showed it to anyone else. Introduced it to a health and fitness group; others expressed interest in creating one Astounding results Jon and Missy knew they had something special on their hands Didn't want to share; But it was something they couldn't NOT do. -The 12 areas the Lifebook optimizes and why Jon chose them...40:10 "Personal" Health and fitness Intellectual life Emotional life Personal Character Spiritual life "Relationship" Love and romance Parenting (yours and your own parents) Social life - friends and extended family "Professional" Career Financial life Quality of Life Overall Life Vision -The overall strategy by which you accomplish your Lifebook experience...45:55 Four steps to each category Premise Purpose Vision Strategy Four questions for each category: What do I believe about...? What do I want in the realm of...? Why do I want...? What do I need to get...? The primary motivation for each category will probably change, i.e. health and fitness vs. money -Ben reveals his weakest category in the Lifebook process and how his overall life purpose helped strengthen it...53:12 -How to undertake the Lifebook experience online for a fraction of the cost of an in-person event...1:03:00 You can do it for free. The catch: You need to finish the program. Pay a $500 deposit. If you finish, you get it back or apply to another program. -And much more! Ep 1013Billion Dollar Meals, $35 Smoothies, Peptides For Tanning & Erections, Holotropic Breathwork, MDMA, Ketamine, Addiction Recovery & More With Khalil Rafati
The "Billion Dollar Meal"... Take a look at the ingredients of just one of the culinary delights designed by my guest on today's podcast. Young Thai Coconut Meat Spinach Raw Cashew Butter Goat Colostrum Chlorophyll Whole Leaf Aloe Buffered Vitamin C Crystals Collagen Vitamineral Greens Silica Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate E3-Live (Brain-On) MCT Oil Four Sigmatic 10 Mushroom Blend (Reishi, Chaga, Cordyceps, Enokitake, Maitake, Shiitake, Lion's Mane, Tremella, Agaricus Blazei, and Meshima) Rice Bran Solubles Hemp Milk From the Billion Dollar Meal above, to the Million Dollar Smoothie, to my son's favorite - "The Dragon Bowl" - and beyond, Khalil Rafati features an amazing assortment of superfood creations at his "Sun Life Organics" juice and smoothie bar spread across California. But Khalil hasn't always been a health freak who creates very expensive smoothies. He went to Los Angeles in the 1990s and had it all. He was working with Hollywood movie stars and legendary rock musicians. But it wasn't long before he found his way into the sordid underbelly of the City of Angels. At 33, Khalil hit rock bottom. He was addicted to heroin and cocaine, overtaken by paranoia and psychosis, and written off by his friends and family. He was 109 pounds, a convicted felon, high school dropout, and homeless junkie living on the infamous Skid Row in downtown L.A. So how does someone with nothing, who feels like they deserve nothing, and who just wants to end it all turn their life around? What's the best way out of a hole? Quit digging. Khalil's book "I Forgot to Die" is an incredible true story of pain, suffering, addiction and redemption. How one man ultimately conquered his inner demons and wrote a new life story. Today, Khalil is the owner of Malibu Beach Yoga and SunLife Organics, a rapidly growing chain of popular juice and smoothie bars in California. He also founded Riviera Recovery, which is a transitional living facility for drug addicts and alcoholics. Among the many things Khalil and I talked about: -How to guarantee a celebrity won't want you around them...7:30 In most cases, Khalil's travel lifestyle is very upscale; he is hired for his culinary expertise. "You don't need to be special; you just need to be transparent." If you want to guarantee a celebrity will never be friends with you, ask for a selfie. They just want to be normal. Oftentimes isolated from the rest of the world. People are enamored with Khalil's transparent approach to telling his story. -The story behind the "Billion Dollar Meal" and the "Million Dollar Smoothie"...15:10 Khalil is a devoted Ben Greenfield disciple Most recipes at Sunlife Organics are Khalil's The recipes were just what he was eating, and people asked him what he was eating. Ep 1012Immortal Cells, Biohacking Pain, Killing Lyme, Stem Cell Confusion, How Ketamine Works & Much More With Dr. Matt Cook.
Dr. Matthew Cook of Bioreset Medical is one of the smartest, most cutting-edge physicians I've ever met. In one single dinner in San Francisco with him, I learned... ...how he's using the nootropic methylene blue for solving a difficult medical case... ...how he's upgrading stem cells to make them far more potent... ...how he's treating depression effectively in as little as 20 minutes with a special brew that includes ketamine, NAD and vitamin IV's... ...how he's reversing musculoskeletal disorders using something called "hydrodissection"... ...and much, much more... Dr. Cook founded BioReset Medical Corporation and as acting President, operates a Regenerative Medicine and Pain Medicine practice that offers leading edge non-surgical solutions in orthopedic medicine, sports medicine, regenerative pain medicine, and stem cell medicine. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist with over 20 years of experience in medical practice. Currently Dr. Cook is President of California Anesthesia, Anesthesiologist, Interventional Pain management, and Regenerative Medicine and Medical Director of the National Surgery Center, Los Gatos, CA. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What Dr. Cook did with methylene blue, and how he activated it with light...8:55 Met an expert who used it to treat interstitial cystitis, a condition that causes very painful bladder that is difficult to treat. Administered via IV, then uses blue LED light over it. There's a micro biome in the bladder. Blue light causes methylene to absorb into the bladder. Dislocates infections from the wall of the bladder. -Hydrodissection: What it is, and how it differs from prolotherapy...14:35 Sticking a needle under direct vision via ultrasound into a tissue plain in-between two muscles. Operating in a fascial plain: arteries, veins, tendons. Previous procedures involving dissection would cause scarring, sometimes leaving patients in worse shape than when they started. Pressure of fluid separating the tissue plain reduces scarring. How is it different from prolotherapy: Prolotherapy treats ligamentous laxity (joints) Hydrodissection treats the nerves and arteries that go into the joints. Treatments are done in tandem. Combination of ultrasound and x-ray is called fusion. Dr. Cook used this therapy with the Washington Nationals baseball team. -How to think of ground force going through the body...23:45 You must have structural integrity in the nerves. As force (from punching a punching bag for example) moves through the body without structural integrity, you get torque leaking out. Puts stress, wear and tear on the joint. This "leakage" compounded over time causes permanent damage to joints, ligaments, etc. Focus of treatment is to relieve this stress, or leakage, and create high quality movement to create structural integrity and prevent recurrence of the problem. - Dr. Cook's approach to stem cells, and why...28:10 Assess the patient, then tailor an appropriate treatment for the specific problem. Joints, spine, IV treatments Terms to know re: stem cells: Totipotent: capable of giving rise to any cell type or (of a blastomere) a complete embryo. Pluripotent: capable of giving rise to several different cell types. Multipotent: develop into more than one cell type, but are more limited than pluripotent cells. Autologous: obtained from the same individual Mesenchymal: An adult "professional" stem cell from a variety of ways. Here's a handy reference on stem cell terms. Whether adult stem cells can retain their healing properties without repairing tissue. No concrete answer yet. Differing approaches, regulatory apparatus is affecting the ability to answer V Cells (very small embryonic stem cells) Autologous Using umbilical cord blood and Wharton's jelly. You can donate placenta and umbilical cord blood. Wharton's jelly is the tissue that comes off the wall of the umbilical cord. Wharton's jelly, UC blood and amniotic fluid is blended together to make "matrix" of the placenta. Anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory "Nature gives us a lot of clues..." Not that many stem cells in the UC blood. PRP (platelet rich plasma) PRP lysate -Why exosomes may be the most important treatment in the future...55:25 Take stem cells and take to a lab, grow them in tissue culture; immortal cell line. Put stem cells on a ketogenic diet. Why do people still need to go overseas for treatment? "More than Minimum Manipulation": a term created by the regulatory apparatus on stem cell therapy. Ep 1010What Should I Eat? The Ultimate Podcast Guide To Choosing The Perfect Diet For You: Part 2
F Diets (Part dos) If you read last week's article "What Is The Perfect Human Diet? Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced Meal Plans From Ben Greenfield That Tell You Exactly How To Eat For Your Unique Body.", then you are no doubt are already aware that I'm not a big fan of a myopic "one-size-fits-all" approach to diets. And yet, despite the enormous amount of biochemical individuality that exists from person to person, there is still a plethora of diet books published each year (particularly close to swimsuit season or the New Year) that promise to be the de facto final solution for everything from fat loss to banishing acne to beating cravings and building muscle when, in fact, the same ketogenic diet that helped your neighbor shed twenty pounds can result in rampant inflammation, brain fog and oxidized cholesterol for you. The same could be said for a vegan diet, a carnivore diet or many of the other currently popular eating approaches. In last week's podcast, Part 1 of a 2 part series on customizing your diet to you, you discovered more about the concept of biochemical individuality, along with how to test your body to determine the perfect diet for you, and a range of dietary options to choose from that have been vetted by yours truly. In this episode, Part 2, you're going to learn how to customize your diet even more if you are wanting to eat a plant-based diet, notorious mistakes made on a ketogenic diet and how to fix them, how to support and sustain the environment with your food choices, and my top books and resources for learning more. Enjoy! During this solosode discussion, you'll discover: -The best way to go about a plant-based diet...6:25 My own personal stance: While it's possible to live a healthy lifestyle minus eggs and meat, you must be very careful and knowledgeable about your diet. It's easy to feel good in the short term, while doing lasting damage to your body in the long term. You can build up deficits on any type of diet: ketogenic, carnivore, etc. 10 Strategies to keep in mind to avoid deficiencies: Eat real food. Avoid processed foods. Be cognizant of inflammatory Omega 6 vegetable oils. Get fats from Mediterranean sources. Vitamin K2 supplement Get adequate Vitamin A Properly prepare soy products (or ferment them yourself) Non heme-based iron Iodine intake Vitamin B12 Taurine Creatine -Best practices when doing a ketogenic diet...23:20 If you want to go keto, consider including some things that are not purely plant-based (like eggs.) Consider adding dairy to your diet (if practicable) If the two above suggestions are not possible, take niacin and thiamin. Ep 1009Beauty, Longevity, Biohacking, Building Perfect Eyesight, The Wild Diet, Memory, Learning & Beyond With Vishen Lakhiani.
The TED of Transformation My friend Vishen Lakhiani’s exploration of peak human potential began in 2001, when he took meditation classes to remedy his crushing work stress in a New York technology company. This soon inspired him to launch Mindvalley: a company bringing transformational education to the world Back then, shortly after he launched some of his first meditation apps, I actually hosted Vishen on the podcast The World's Best Phone Apps For Sleep, Meditation and Relaxation , in which we geeked out on meditation, and the meditation apps that Vishen and his team began designing. After 15 years, 3 million students, and numerous accolades from the likes of Huffington Post, BBC, Inc. Magazine, and WorldBlu, Mindvalley became recognized as one of the world’s top workplaces, and a leading publisher in the personal growth industry. But Vishen’s vision extended further. He believes many aspects of mainstream education remain dangerously stuck in obsolete industrial revolution-era paradigms. And that the evolution of humanity’s consciousness is lagging behind our innovations in technology. This makes the evolution of our education - or as he calls it, Transformational Education - one of our most pressing concerns. Through Mindvalley, Vishen now works with governments, education institutions, technology innovators, artists, and the world’s best teachers to create deeply transformational learning experiences: the kind that elevate people of all ages and walks of life into empowered, cosmocentric, highly evolved human beings. Today, Vishen is a leading voice for transformational education and is the founder of annual events like A-Fest and Mindvalley U, both events which I've attended and spoken at. He also speaks on stages across the world on subjects such as personal growth, education technology, and workplace culture. He sits on the Innovation Board of the XPrize Foundation, an advocate of human-centric technological development. And he’s also a bestselling author, including the incredibly popular book "Code Of The Extraordinary Mind". But Vishen’s latest mission is arguably his most audacious yet: within the next 20 years, he intends to completely evolve mankind’s approach to learning, by bringing Transformational Education to every country and Fortune 500 company on the planet. One of the ways he's doing that is via the innovative MindValley Quests, and in today's podcast, we talk about the new Beauty & Longevity Quest I've created with MindValley, and much, much more! During our discussion, you'll discover: -When and why Vishen launched Mind Valley...14:32 Wanted to start the next great social media platform in 2002. Lost everything; owed money; couldn't pay rent. Got a job selling tech info to lawyers. Ended up depressed. Hit rock bottom. Googled, "Why does life suck so bad?" Discovered class on meditation. Was the only person who showed up to the class. Began applying meditation, empathy, intuition into his work. Sales improved exponentially in 4 months. Looking to tap into the subconscious for ideas. How Vishen incorporated meditation into his sales calls: Gave his mind "instructions": Only call lawyers that are a good fit for the tech. Would benefit both sides from a sale. Ran hand over names; listened for a "gut impulse." Yes, or no. Doubled sales in one week listening to his gut. Quit sales job and became a meditation instructor. Took the Silva Mind Control; adapted to his own practice. Has now integrated with Mind Valley. "Mind Valley Intuition Program" How often do you do the Silva Mind Control? -The 113 points that are measured in the Mind Valley program...30:20 Based on an online assessment developed by Jon Butcher. Unifying different models of personal growth via merger, acquisition. Prices on programs are lowered, more available to people. -Vishen's own personal habits and bio hacks...34:00 Extremely structured life. Aspergers causes awkwardness in social situations, OCD behavior in work. Knowledge is data; focus on transformation to live a more fulfilling life. Focusing on transformation changed Vishen's outlook on life, physical appearance, mindset. Wants to have the biggest jump in consciousness in history by 2038. Vishen's Daily Routine: 6 phase meditation "Transcendent practice" Compassion Gratitude Forgiveness Creative visualization (long term) Visualize today Prayer or a blessing Intermittent fasting Cold thermogenesis Healthy morning shake Coconut oil Raw green powder Acai Protein powder Super slow strength training Very regimented work program. 8 hours per day. Family, reading, study time. -How Vishen fixed his eyesight...57:20 Read his blog post about it here. Get your eyes checked from a doctor, not an optometrist. Get glasses one increment down from your actual vision. Install eye chart in your home. Get a vision coach, online vision course. Eyeglasses are a crutch! -Vishen's sleep routine...1:03:35 -The diet that Vishen promotes which mimics that of our ancestors...1:08:15 Wild Fi

Enjoy! During this solosode discussion, you'll discover: -The concept of biochemical individuality...7:35 Book: Biochemical Individuality by Roger Williams No such thing as an "average" person. Nutrition and environment can affect our outcome. Some people do not need to supplement Vitamin C, A, Riboflavin, etc. Others are resistant to things such as Vitamin D; taking the recommended amount damages their system. What worked for someone else may be damaging for you. Ketogenic Diet I used this when racing in Ironman triathlons; I still use it for days I need endurance. Some are high in cholesterol, high liver enzymes. Familial hypercholesterolemia; negative response to high intake of fats. Low amount of Alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA) is converted into usable DHA or EPA Elongation of Omega 6 fatty acids Thrifty gene hypothesis (James Neal in 1962): Why humans build fat mass Some people possess genes that cause them to accumulate fat faster than others. FTO and PPRA genes are responsible for storing fatty acids. Consider a low fat, or plant-based diet vs. a ketogenic if you have these genes. Book: Wired to Eat by Rob Wolf -Differences in methylation between individuals...30:20 Meat eaters: most meat has high amounts of methionine, which is a high methyl donor Methylation occurs when a methyl group is taken from one compound or molecule and is transferred to another. If you're undermethylated, you would benefit from a high intake of muscular meats. Folate acts as a serotonin reuptake promoter. Good for undermethylators. Overmethylation: last thing you need is a bunch of meat for every meal. Consume protein, but don't be an extreme carnivore. -How to eat according to your ancestry...35:05 Northern European: Access to fish, Vitamin D Mexicans, Hispanics, Chinese: More folate rich foods, leafy greens. Ep 1007Do Probiotics Really Work, The Carnivore Diet, How To Heal Bacterial Overgrowth, Is Fiber Necessary, Melatonin For A Leaky Gut & More!
These days, when people ask me the #1 book I recommend for all things gut, it is, hands down "Healthy Gut, Healthy You" by Dr. Michael Ruscio. This book takes a deep dive into topics such as: How the gut works and its role in your body, Practical diet and lifestyle advice to support your gut health, Simple and actionable tools to repair your gut, and An innovative, user-friendly plan to heal, support, and revitalize your gut. This is Dr. Ruscio's third appearance on the podcast. The first one, titled Why Healthy People Get Broken Guts, And What You Can Do About It talked about why apparently healthy people, especially athletes and exercise enthusiasts, get broken guts, and what they can do about it. Then, the second podcast, titled Good Carbs, Bad Carbs, High Carbs, Low Carbs & More: Clearing Up Carbohydrate Confusion, was an in-depth discussion on carbs and their effect on your body. What will his third appearance on the podcast reveal??? Quite a bit, as you will hear. About the guest: Michael Ruscio is a doctor, clinical researcher and best-selling author whose practical ideas on healing chronic illness have made him an influential voice in functional and alternative medicine. His work has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals and he speaks at integrative medical conferences across the globe. Dr. Ruscio also runs an influential website and podcast at DrRuscio.com, as well as his clinical practice located in northern California. During my discussion with Dr. Ruscio, you'll discover: -What small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is...6:40 Dr. Ruscio's interest in this goes back 5 years. Focused on improving the health of bacteria. Observations don't always translate into practical action inside a clinic. You differentiate the discrepancies when you separate the large and small intestine. What's going on in the large intestine isn't indicative of the small. A lot of "gut advice" is large intestine-centric. Small intestine comprises 56% of gut activity. Most prone to leaky gut Most immuno active Where 90% of calories are absorbed Bacterial overgrowth is either an overgrowth of or the wrong type of bacteria in the small intestine Not a parasite Native to your system; either in the wrong place or too much of it. -How SIBO affects the thyroid...12:33 Many people who think they have a thyroid condition actually do not. 60% of people who were rechecked were found not to be hypothyroid. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can be mistaken for other problems in the GI tract. Study done on people with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) Higher incidence of fatigue, depression and anxiety found They were not hypothyroid Another study looking at 1800 patients Looking for drug use, medication use, prior intestinal surgery; expected these to increase risk of SIBO Two most correlated conditions: being hypothyroid and being on thyroid medication. 290 were taken off medication and retested; 60% were not hypothyroid Neither antibodies, nor weight, nor time on medication dictated whether were hypo or normal thyroid. Speak with your doctor to confirm whether you're hypothyroid or not. Be wary if you were diagnosed by someone outside of conventional medicine. -The testing and protocol for SIBO Dr. Ruscio recommends...22:15 For testing thyroid: test TSH and Free T4 If within normal range, you likely don't have a thyroid problem. For SIBO, two practical options; breath tests. One uses glucose, the other uses lactulose -About the elemental diet. What it is and how it works...27:30 Hypoallergenic, gut-healing meal replacement shake. Absorbs in the first part of small intestine Rests the remainder of the small and large intestine Starves overgrowth Not as difficult as it may sound. -The African vs. the Westerner microbiota, and whether or not it's a good idea to try to mimic our ancestors...32:20 Scientist Gives Himself Fecal Transplant To Try A Hunter-Gatherer's Microbiome Challenge lies in excising just one element out of an entire culture, and inserting it into a totally different population. Many African tribes have parasites in their bodies. Hard to replicate their diet because their bodies have adapted to their specific environment. -What happened when the Sardinians tried to eliminate malaria...39:07 Back in 1950's, Sardinia had a high rate of malaria; cases of MS skyrocketed. Sardinian immune system learned to function with malaria. Once taken away, the immune system didn't know what to do. Created unforeseen adverse consequences. The malaria may have actually strengthened their immune systems. Article: Why Ben uses tapeworms and whipworms -Why we should have more naturally occurring plant life around our home...43:05 -Dr. Ruscio's comments on probiotics...44:55 Most probiotics do not colonize you. Can help reset the microbiota to a healthy equilibrium. Works in tandem with a healthy lifestyle. Think of it as a "nudge" to complement your lifestyle to reset to a healthy equilibrium Should kids use probiotics? The earlier an

What To Do When You Can't Exercise [00:26:04] Graeme says: I am having an op this week to repair an inguinal hernia. It is keyhole surgery where basically they place mesh over the affected areas. Exercise is my anti-depressant. I know I can’t do anything that stresses the core too much. Thought about indoor cycling and Compex. Any other thoughts on exercises I can do? Ep 100610 Ways To Grow Tiny Superhumans - Ben Greenfield's Top Tips For Raising Strong, Resilient, Happy Kids
Whether you have kids, plan on having kids, or know kids, you live in a privileged era in which you have the ability to enable the kids in your life to be tiny superhumans who look, feel, think and perform like optimized human beings, and you're about to hear exactly how. Mozart learned to play the piano at the age of four, composed his first piece at age five and wrote his first symphony at age eight. Pablo Picasso, when he was just twelve, had an astonishing grasp of the fundamentals of art and was producing photo-realistic anatomical sketches. Giovanni Bernini was churning out intricate, life-like stone sculptures at only eight years old. But these folks aren’t special childhood prodigies, idiot savants, or some kind of unique autistic geniuses. These are normal human beings. Sadly, in our modern era, we’ve forgotten how to nurture and grow an amazing human body and mind, and instead settled for a generation of kids that wind up on peopleofwalmart.com - attached to leashes and chewing on Ritalin. The fact is, we live in a modern era in which we have the capability to enable the child in our lives to become tiny superhumans, and grow up with optimized physical and mental capabilities. But unfortunately, it’s very easy to make parenting and teaching mistakes that create a host of issues in children, including lack of proper muscle and brain growth, immune system weakness, low IQ, stunted growth, obesity, depression, attention deficit disorder, social anxiety, and other frustrating problems that parents now accept as all-too-common. In today's podcast, I'm giving you the entire recording of my 2014 book "10 Ways To Grow Tiny Superhumans". In it, you'll learn things like: -Cutting-edge research on how birth methods, bacteria, dirt, germs, farms, pets, and families make a life-long impression on a child’s immune system...9:00 We're actually hard-wired to eat our own boogers; strengthens our immune systems. Babies born via c-section have lower health quality than natural born. Colostrum is important. Dirt isn't necessarily dirty. Natto. Tastes terrible, but it's great for you and your kids. -Why the modern paradigm of low-fat food is one of the worst dietary practices possible for a growing child’s brain and nervous system...13:10 You want lots of fat; my kids eat lots of bone broth. You want them to eat "brain food." Total cholesterol below 200 is associated with low IQ. -How to foster an ideal combination of play, healthy competitiveness and a desire to succeed in a child through strategies such as roughhousing and wrestling...15:05 Rough housing teaches to deal with unpredictable situations; how to lose gracefully; how to deal with pain. People who rough house are more socially mature. Stronger bond with your kids; releases more oxytocin. Gets them more physically active. -Ways to enable your child to spend more time on their feet and wearing the proper footwear – two important decisions that will affect their posture for life...16:50 "Think outside the chair." Standing work stations for kids. Rarely wear shoes. Kids with poor posture have poor posture as adults. Overprotective modern footwear inhibit foot health for life. Kids can reshape and restructure bones in just a few months. Choose flexible shoes. Foot games to develop motor skills. Massage feet; happy feet socks. -How to immerse your child in healthy and safe forms of unstructured free play that enables kids to solve their own problems, control their own decisions, and follow an internal moral compass...21:09 Preoccupation with safety has stripped our kids of independence, risk taking and discovery. Feel less in control of their own fate. Free schooling, unschooling Recommended books: Duct Tape Parenting, Baby Knows Best, Free Range Kids We're not creating perfect kids; we're creating kids who can think for themselves. -Creative methods of exercise and fitness that make your children a part of the process...26:50 Use your kids as weights while you workout. Play "follow the leader" Jogging strollers. -What modern electronics can do to a child’s developing brain and body, and how you can protect a child without completely unplugging or disconnecting them from technology...29:00 Air Tube Headset EMF's hazardous to children's health. Kids absorb more EMF than adults. We have a "stupid" home. -How to enhance a child’s sleep cycles, decrease stress, increase relaxation and even optimize brain waves...31:15 Have a bedtime routine. Kids sleep an hour less than they did 30-40 years ago. Lose sleep to go to school. -Everything necessary to nurture and grow an amazing young human’s body and mind...33:45 Your child feels your stress levels; hearts are synced.
