Ep 1086My New #1 Hack For Zapping Inflammation, Increasing Deep Sleep & Recovering Faster - Earthing (The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?)
I recently read the book Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever! (and my twin boys also watched the accompanying documentary "Earthing"). Although I already knew about the importance of having an intimate connection with the planet we live upon, this book blew my mind when it comes to identifying one of the best solutions for chronic inflammation, better sleep, enhanced deep sleep and much more. Since reading it, I've been traveling everywhere with my grounding mat, wearing my Earth runners every day, and my boys have barely even touched their shoes. In the book, author Clint Ober introduces the planet's powerful, amazing, and overlooked natural healing energy and how people anywhere can readily connect to it. This never-before-told story, filled with fascinating research and real-life testimonials chronicles a discovery with the potential to create of global health revolution. So obviously, I had to the get Clint on the show! Clint Ober is the innovator behind the Grounding Movement & CEO of Earth FX Inc., a research and development company located in Palm Springs, California. A series of seemingly unrelated synchronistic events dating back to his early childhood led to a groundbreaking discovery that’s being recognized as the Greatest Health Discovery of all time. Grounding has now become a massive international movement - causing people to shed their shoes and reconnect electrically to the surface of the Earth. Clint first learned about grounding when installing Cable TV systems in Billings, Montana in the early 1960s. A decade later, he formed Telecrafter Corporation and built it into the largest provider of cable installation services in the United States. This company specialized in proper grounding of cable installations for safety and TV signal stability. In the 1980s, he turned his attention to the developing computer industry and partnered with McGraw-Hill to distribute live digital news services, via cable, to PCs. This led to the development of the first cable modem and an increased awareness of the need for proper system grounding. Following a health challenge in 1995, he retired and embarked on a personal journey looking for a higher purpose in life. During his travels, he noticed people wearing plastic and rubber soled shoes that insulate the body from earth. He wondered if no longer being naturally grounded could affect us. The question led to an experiment that suggested grounding alone reduced chronic pain and improved sleep. Thereafter, he developed a working hypothesis: Grounding the human body to the Earth normalizes the functioning of all of the body’s systems — the body utilizes the earth’s electrical potential and free electrons to maintain its internal electrical stability, normalizing all of its self-regulating and self-healing systems. Over the past twenty years, he has supported over 20 research studies* that collectively demonstrate that grounding reduces inflammation and promotes normal functioning of all body systems. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How a near-death experience led to Clint's interest in earthing -- 6:10 Clint grew up in rural Montana; childhood friends were Native Americans "If the pasture is pristine, the cows will be healthy" Grew up with a prevention mentality: look at the cause, not the syumptoms Spent 30 years in the communications industry Near-death experience involving a infected liver after a root canal "The next time I die, I wanted my life to be worth more" "Be the opposite charge" "Status quo is the enemy" -Why a roll of duct tape proved to be the catalyst to Clint's most important discovery -- 19:40 While living in Sedona, AZ experienced problems with computer crashing; identified static electricity as the problem Intuitive question: Are modern shoes preventing us from grounding with the earth? Began testing the charge in the earth with a volt meter Grounded himself to the earth via metal tape; Static reading on his body went to zero Slept the night without moving (was typically in a lot of pain) Friends reported reduced pain, lowered arthritis -The early days of Clint's clinical research on grounding the body with the Earth -- 25:45 There was very little research on how grounding with the earth reduces pain and improves sleep Two doctoral students at UCLA helped him design the study 60 participants: 30 grounded, 30 ungrounded Positive results on the participants who were grounded Similar results among those exposed to EMF and not exposed to EMF An anesthesiologist in San Diego was willing to help with the research; he was interested in saliva cortisol levels in patients Cortisol levels went from erratic to synchronized after grounding At 4 am, cortisol spikes until 6 am Everyone's cortisol went up beginning at 4 am (with no other environmental cues) -What is going on in the body when a person is grounded with the Earth -- 34:00 Dr. Stephen Sinatra "When you're reducing pain, you're reducing inflammation" Led to a different

In my response, I recommend: - Kettle & Fire Bone Broth (code GREENFIELD for 10% off) Spot-reducing belly fat? John asks: After being introduced to a high fat, low carb and intermittent fasting diet several years ago, I found it was easy to maintain an ideal body weight. Most of my body is pretty lean (160-170 pounds) but when I measure my stomach using a caliper, it seems to come in around 15%. I've always heard that belly fat is one of the last places men lose fat, but I'd rather not drop to 145 pounds just to see abs. There seems to be a community of people online who think you can spot-reduce fat. Do you think that's possible, and if so, what techniques would you recommend? In my response, I recommend: - Glycogen depletion/exercise combo protocols (e.g. Tour De France riders) - Localized Cryo - Localized Photobiomodulation - Localized EMS How To Recover From A TBI/Concussion Fast Mark asks: A good friend of mine just got into a really serious car accident. Ep 1084Why You Shouldn't Let Modern Baby Food Anywhere Near Your Baby (& What To Use Instead To Make Your Baby Stronger & Smarter).
Did you know.. ..a baby needs 30g of fat per day to support brain development, hormone regulation and build the immune system? Yet, sadly, nearly all modern baby food doesn't even come close to touching this daily requirement and furthermore, is chock full of preservatives, added sugars, non-organic, GMO ingredients and other toxins and additives that harm a baby's muscular and skeletal growth, cognitive development, immune system and much more. So I was incredibly pleased when I discovered a baby food I could finally get behind. As a father, nutritionist and health consultant, I can tell you with confidence that Serenity Kids baby food, designed and formulated by my guests on today's show - Joe and Serenity Carr - is, bar none, the only packaged baby food I would ever recommend any parent feed to their precious child. As a matter of fact, this stuff is so dangerously tasty that I suspect you as a parent may become addicted to it too. It is wonderfully refreshing to finally see a company doing things right when it comes to perfectly portioned ingredients tailored to the exact needs of a growing human being. I can't recommend this stuff highly enough. Serenity Carr, co-founder and CEO of Serenity Kids Baby Food, is on a mission to promote wellness starting with the first bite. Formerly employed in tech and logistics, Serenity left her job to pursue her passion of health coaching where she helped clients achieve their personal health goals. Having healed her digestive issues through a lifestyle diet change, Serenity is transforming the baby food industry by developing innovative nutrient dense products because every bite counts. Joe Carr, founder and President of Serenity Kids Baby Food, is a certified life coach and educator devoted to social justice activism. An autism activist and proponent of the Paleo diet, Joe works with other autistic adults and youth to help them harness their gifts and genuinely believes that food is medicine. He is also active with the ManKind Project helping men develop power with compassion. As President of Serenity Kids, Joe oversees day to day operations and leads sales that will transform the baby food industry. During my discussion with Joe and Serenity, you'll discover: -Joe and Serenity share their own back stories..8:55 Serenity: "The paleo diet turned my life around." Suffered major stomach and digestion problems as a child due to intolerances to conventional foods Over the counter meds stopped working in her 20's; sought stronger meds via prescription The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf Books by Mark Sisson The Dietary Cure for Acne by Loren Cordain Joe: Undiagnosed autism as a child (mislabeled "obnoxious") Discovered a gift as a performing artist (acting, singing, etc.) Became involved in social justice causes; became vegan/vegetarian Focused his altruistic efforts toward children after college Met Serenity; introduced to the Paleo diet which helped with many of the social anxieties that had become normal -How their paths led to an interest in baby food..18:30 They attended Paleo FX in 2016 and realized there were no products specifically for babies Serenity began an intensive immersion into the Paleo diet Joe was involved in a startup that was leading to serious burnout The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss opened eyes to creating a product vs. a service Tested and researched their offerings based on the preferences of their friends' children -Deficiencies and problems with modern conventional baby foods..23:30 The USDA recommends 30g of fat per day, no sugars, etc. What they found in grocery stores was the opposite of what even the government was recommending Organic baby foods had on average 9g of sugar per pouch The food is not satiating; it is addictive because of all the sugar Less than 4% of foods had meat; there were no source disclosures Mixed with grains (chicken and rice); zero fat "Flavor window": what kids eat as babies affects their preferences later in life The Weston A. Ep 1083Transcendental Meditation: Cult, Quackery, or Science?
In 2016, I published an interview with the person who taught me Transcendental Meditation (TM) And since meditation has been on my mind as of late, I wanted to share the interview with you again. Meditation is a powerful tool for improving your mental, emotional, and even physical health. Its widely studied benefits include stress reduction, better sleep, enhanced focus, elevated mood, improved regulation of emotions, and so much more. When practiced consistently and with intention, meditation has the unique ability to positively transform the way you think, behave, and interact with the world around you. It can literally rewire your brain! But unfortunately, in the words of Tim Ferris, “meditation has a branding problem.” Many of us view meditation as some woo-woo practice that’s exclusively used by ultra-spiritual gurus and self-important business executives. We tend to imagine it as sitting cross-legged on a pristine mountain top, eyes closed, thinking about nothing, totally blissed out: A mental image that’s equal parts alienating and unrealistic. What’s worse, the standard advice for beginners to “sit still and stop thinking” simply does not work. It’s vague, it’s confusing, and it leaves people feeling frustrated and ready to quit before their practice starts paying off. So what exactly is transcendental meditation? More than 380 peer-reviewed research studies on the TM technique have been published in over 160 scientific journals. These studies were conducted at many US and international universities and research centers, including Harvard Medical School, Stanford Medical School, Yale Medical School, and UCLA Medical School...and they have shown irrefutable evidence that TM reduces insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, blood pressure, cholesterol, congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis/stroke, free radicals, blood sugar, diabetes, pain, along with higher levels of brain functioning, longevity, sleep quality and much more. The guy who taught me everything I know about TM is named Philip Land. Philip has been practicing TM for the past 40 years. But he's no woo-woo, robe-clad, Eastern mysticist. He's an unassuming, straight-talking, God-fearing, gun-totin' redneck living in northern Idaho. (When he's not teaching TM, you can find him walking his dog or taking selfies with Colonel Sanders.) Philip has taught TM all over the globe, working with celebrities and high profile politicians. He's also worked in medicine, computed tomography, radiation technology, craniosacral therapy, hunting instruction, shooting, wilderness survival, and much more. In this fascinating interview, you'll learn.. -How "bad ass, redneck, hunting, hippy, family man" Philip initially got involved with TM..8:50 Was born and raised in Memphis, TN Heard of TM while attending Memphis State Univ. In retrospect, Philip believes he was "searching for something" Internal happiness was missing - Celebrity TM practitioners.. 11:25 Clint Eastwood (42+ years) Jerry Seinfeld Ellen DeGeneres Katy Perry Oprah Winfrey Ray Dalio (Author of Principles) Department of Defense gave $2 million grant to study TM to reduce PTSD -How Philip describes TM...15:30 "A simple, effortless mental technique that can be done anywhere" Creating white noise inside your head TM does not have a monopoly on the ability to "transcend" where the mind settles to a quieter and quieter level of awareness You transcend where you are physically, and take yourself to another place mentally -Religious elements of TM and why a guarded secrecy exists among its teachers..19:45 No religious belief is required; it's a mental technique You don't need to believe it will even work TM was argued before German Supreme Court; they ruled it is not a religion Teachers are sworn to secrecy to protect the integrity of TM; you can't learn certain parts of it in a weekend then teach it to others These techniques are 5000-6000 years old Traditional way of teaching: Teacher performs a brief ceremony which reminds him or her to maintain the integrity of the knowledge Performed in Sanskrit -The "place" where a person transcends that produces a biological effect..28:45 The field of pure consciousness is our core, our essence Many mantras that are used for each individual 3 things that make TM work: Mantra Sound (life supporting, no meaning assigned) The nature of the mind and life is to go to greater fields of happiness, joy and intelligence Within each of us is a field of perfect order, joy, intelligence, etc. Color fasting cloth analogy Conscious mind becomes saturated in the perfect field of order Mind settles, body settles and vice versa The vagus nerve plays an integral role in the mind/body relationship -Formal studies on the effects of TM on the brain..38:30 Center for Brain, Consciousness and Cognition (Dr. Fred Travis) Practitioners of TM with minimal sleep (4-5 hrs) performed similarly to non-practicers with 8-9 hrs. (TM is not a suitable replacement for sleep) TM has been shown to sti

In this episode with Paul Chek, you'll hear: -Why Paul became an espresso aficionado..4:30 Paul and his wife at one time worked 18+ hrs a day; espresso was an effective way to stay engaged and productive Caregiver archetype Studying functional medicine, Paul found people who had blood sugar issues had coffee on an empty stomach Inflammation, hormone regulation issues Logic doesn't work to get people to kick a bad habit People have a deep emotional connection to coffee Came across some time release vitamins; saw word "chelated" on the bottle Saw a connection between chelation and coffee to help with above mentioned issues Began using organic butter, nut butters, yak butter tea Laird Hamilton was a fan out of the gate Encouraged people to put something in their coffee and eat a bit of food first thing in the morning -Intuitive eating and a discussion on what is "God"..10:40 Difference between intuition and instinct: Intuition is asking the totality of yourself a question and waiting for the answer Only "God" can give you the soul; the soul is "God" in you Ken Wilburn is known to be able to "stop" his brain (see video) Book: Destructive Emotions by Dalai Lama Scientifically speaking, "God" can only be defined as "zero" Book: Stalking the Wild Pendulum by Itzak Bentov Book: The Physics of Angels "What we call spirits and angels is the flow of information and energy that is anthropomorphized" (human interpretation) Eternity, not infinity, is the zero point that we call "God" Intuitive eating: One empties their soul, then asks if a particular food is what they should eat that day. They'll receive the answer according to the energy they feel, positive or negative "Human beings will continue to invent technologies outside themselves until they've either destroyed the planet or they've come to the realization that everything they've created outside of themselves is a copy of a technology that exists within themselves." --Rudolf Steiner -An alternative view of human DNA..28:55 DNA is not a bunch of information like a computer; it's an antenna system that's tapping into morphogenic fields The Michelson-Morley Experiment (proved that the aether does exist) YouTube video explaining Gregg Braden's "phantom DNA" experiment Book: The Mystic Spiral by Jill Purce YouTube: String Theory Explained - What is the True Nature of Reality? Article on Whirling Dervishes (re: Paul's experience seeing photons in the sun) Book: Ancient Mysteries, Modern Visions by Phil Callahan YouTube series: The Dirt Facts by Paul Chek -Soul connection and ego dissolution..42:40 Ego dissolution often occurs when people are in a deep crisis It cannot occur when we are constrained by religious or cultural

Ep 1079Carnivore Diet, Cleaning Out Your Colon, Eating Brains, Hunting Zebras & Much More With Paul Saladino.
Carnivore diet expert Dr. Paul Saladino was my guest on the show "The Truth About The Carnivore Diet: Everything You Need To Know About Dangers, Benefits, Mistakes & Hacks For Eating Only Meat." And now he's back! In this episode, we discuss my time at the Swiss Mountain Clinic, liver detoxes, European Biological Medicine, peptides, spirituality, hunting, survival, homemade pesto, BFR training, the carnivore diet (of course!) and much more. Throughout the course of his life, Paul Saladino has embarked on many adventures that have shaped his personal interests – including his unique, individualized approach to medicine. After studying chemistry at College of William he spent 6 years traveling and exploring. Highlights included a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, a summer in the New Zealand backcountry, and 2 years skiing and climbing in Wyoming's Teton Mountains. He returned to academic studies after these adventures, first becoming a physician assistant and practicing in cardiology before training at the University of Arizona, obtaining his M.D. in 2015. Ep 1077Held Hostage: How The FDA Is Keeping You From Using Your Own Stem Cells (& What You Can Do About It)
"Held Hostage. The FDA ruled last week that your own stem cells from your own fat are a drug and only they have jurisdiction over them. All stem cell treatments using your own cells in the USA now must be from bone marrow. Japan, Panama and many other progressive countries have moved in the opposite direction and have approved stem cells from your fat for their citizens due to the high safety and efficacy rate. This affects all of us. Big Pharma is now regulating your body. Legally." My podcast guest on today's show, Dr. Tami Meraglia is a double board certified MD, who recently posted to a private Facebook group we are both part of the message above. I found this post so disturbing that I invited her on my podcast to discuss the current state of stem cells and legality in the US and we take a deep dive on this show. Dr. Meraglia is the author of The Nationally Best Selling book The Hormone Secret and the CEO of Global Stemology and Seattle Stem Cell Center, the only Stem Cell Clinic in the Nation that provides complimentary hormone, nutrition and inflammation program to every stem cell patient. She is keynote speaker for the American Academy of Anti-Aging and conferences in the US, Canada, Asia and Dubai. She has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox National News and has hosted multiple radio shows. After an illustrious career in the ballet, she discovered that she had a great talent for chemistry; combining that with her intense desire to make a difference and a career in medicine was launched. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Tami's history in the realm of stem cells, and how she began using them in her practice...8:55 Her dad had COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Research to save his life led to stem cells over and over Initial treatments, while positive results, took 3-6 months or longer to see any results Further research led to knowledge of supplements, sleep, even quantum physics Book: Bruce Lipton's "Biology of Belief" "Look to the environment, not the cells" Negative thoughts can lead to the immune system shutting down Dr. Dawson Church's book "Mind to Matter" Carotenoids and the risk of developing lung cancer: a systematic review Carotenoids should be ingested as food in order to see any efficacy -How the FDA is currently regulating stem cells...15:26 Many stem cell clinics store their cells at U.S. Stem in Florida U.S. Stem uses a collaganese enzyme to break down fat and access the stem cells U.S. Stem was issued a cease and desist by the FDA Anything that is more than "minimally manipulated" (by the FDA's parameters) has become a drug, and therefore must be regulated by the FDA It must go through a pharmaceutical manufacturing process Extremely expensive process; pharmaceutical companies will profit handsomely while delivering an inferior product "Why should the FDA say we have the right to one source of stem cells and not the other?" The next wave of stem cell scrutiny will be with bone marrow Big Pharma perhaps sees stem cell industry as a threat to the status quo, hence this legal action Pain is a perceptive thing; the procedure isn't really painful Bone marrow transplant is as good or better than fat -How concerned consumers can get involved with this issue should they wish to do so...26:40 An attorney has been retained by several previous stem cell patients It's a waiting game The judge ordered all stem cells stored at U.S. Stem to be destroyed Thousands of people wrote letters asked for a stay on the motion, and it worked Visit USStemology.com if you'd like to be involved -The current legality of non-autologous stem cell sources...32:45 very small embryonic-like stem cells (vsels) are not stem cells antigen-specific immunoglobulin expressing cells synonymous with adult pluripotent stem cell (apsc) Dr. Holland Chen CoQ10 NAD antioxidants VSEL's require a light and temperature stress They pass the blood brain barrier -The type of protocols co-administered with stem cells to increase their efficacy...36:20 Can't be done with the typical Western medicine mentality If your stem cells are seeds that are growing, the soil in which it grows matters a great deal There's "clean" lifestyle and there are things that help the stem cells and the mitochondria that supports them Stem cells are attracted to areas of inflammation Don't waste them on the gut when the gut can be healed in other ways Modern farming practices make our soil deficient in magnesium -About the upcoming documentary and masterclass Tami is producing...41:15 Fasting to up regulate stem cells Intermittent fasting is ideal for most 24 hour fast is necessary for some Every spiritual discipline in the world includes fasting -Under the radar procedures related to stem cells Tami does in her practice...44:05 IV administered Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) Hyperbaric oxygen Hormones (pellet insertions) Popular with physicians who are procedure oriented BGF Podcast w/ Jay Campbell (ref. testosterone cream vs. inje

Ep 1076A Little-Known Secret To Fix Your Vagus Nerve, Banish Constipation, Use Nicotine As A Biohack & Much More!
A few months ago, I briefly mentioned on a podcast that I discovered that by taking a specific blend of nutrients to support my vagus nerve, I was able to completely get rid of morning constipation. Today, my podcast guest, Dr. Diana Driscoll, is the individual who actually designed that blend, and who knows a heckuva lot about the vagus nerve and its interplay with our bodies. Dr. Diana Driscoll is an optometrist who had always been healthy - she was also a bit of an exercise fanatic who also geeked out with nutrition. But despite this history, she was struck down by an illness that few understood and was disabled for over a decade. Ultimately, she was diagnosed with something called POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) - a disorder of the autonomic nervous system and was told there was no cure for this mysterious condition. When her children also became ill and doctors had no answers, she formed Genetic Disease Investigators to formally study these conditions. Dr. Driscoll is considered to be “the patients researcher”, bypassing notoriously slow academic research institutions to get answers quickly. Twelve years later, she is now the director of POTS Care – the only POTS Clinic focused on searching for the underlying cause of POTS, and treating it at its source. She has received two patents to date, and is now not only helping patients who are ill -- she is reaching out to healthy folks who want to improve their quality of life and maximize their health, even into old age. Dr. Driscoll graduated summa cum laude from both The University of Houston College of Optometry and The University of Texas at Austin. She is a geek, through and through. She is a member of the International Society of Neurovascular Disease, the American Headache Society, the Medical Advisory Board for EDS Network C.A.R.E.S, the American Optometric Association, the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society, and served as a medical advisor for the Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation. Her peer-reviewed medical abstracts include those involving vascular abnormalities in the fundus of POTS patients, the etiology of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, and the use of acetazolamide in multiple sclerosis. She is the author of “The Driscoll Theory” and “Your Eyes and EDS”, and was the chief author of the “Ophthalmology Medical Resource Guide” for Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation. Dr. Driscoll is the recipient of numerous awards for patient advocacy and continues to donate her time to help others across the globe through her online forum and videos on YouTube. Her work in chronic inflammation, the autonomic nervous system, collagen disorders, and organ dysfunction can help others live their best life, as well as have their best body and mind. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Diana's story and how she first became interested in her field of work...8:15 Contracted a virus during a missions trip to Costa Rica, but she was unable to kick it Difficulty breathing Poor sleep Racing heart Poor digestion Developed a tremor Memory loss Difficulty handling any type of stress Her kids began to develop similar symptoms Treatment included more exercise; but nothing worked Was disabled due to fatigue for over a decade -The results of Diana's studies and research...14:15 "Layers of discovery" over the course of several years Diana's blog The Driscoll Theory Abnormal inter cranial pressure Inflammation was a factor The exaggerated symptoms actually made it easier to discover the causes Genetics play a large role (her children experienced the same symptoms) Started by looking at the eyes (great window into systemic illness) -A working definition of POTS...21:20 POTS is not a disease, it's a symptom There was no specific diagnosis for her condition Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system ALS/Parkinson's begin with POTS symptoms Astronauts get POTS while in space, due to the lack of gravity -How dysfunction of the vagus nerve is correlated with POTS...24:30 The abnormal inter cranial pressure is indicative of a poorly functioning vagus nerve When symptoms occur simultaneously (difficulty breathing, racing heart, gut dysfunction, etc.) it could be the vagus nerve Ileocecal valve is linked to POTS and nerve function Vagus nerve controls the function of the valve Gastro motility linked to migrating motor complex (cleaning up digestive system) Triggered by signals from the vagus nerve -The nicotine-induced method Diana devised to repair the ileocecal valve...30:10 A kidney stone turned up 3 days after being cleared for kidney stones The doctor confirmed the ileocecal valve was problematic A surgeon refused to open the valve Two parts of vagus nerve: preganglionic (extremely long) and postganglionic (extremely short) Diana tried to stimulate the postganglionic nerve The vagus nerve is a nicotinic acido cholinergic nerve (nicotine is the imitator of the vagal neurotransmitter) She put a nicotine patch over the side of the ileocecal valve Within hours

Ep 1075The Ultimate Guide To Unschooling: Top Tips To Create Free-Thinking, Resilient, Creative Young Humans Who Can Thrive In A Modern World.
These days, traditional school, such as a public or private school, is only one of many options to get an education. You've probably heard of homeschooling (I was personally homeschooled K-12). But another method that isn't as well known is known as "unschooling" It's a method of education I've recently adopted for my boys using resources such as the book "Unschooling to University". Many parents are frustrated by the school system, perhaps because of bullying, crowded classrooms, and outdated, dull, online courses. Disengaged learners that have no say in their coerced curriculum tend to act out, tune out, or drop out. Education must change and unschooling is the fastest growing alternative method of learning. T wo decades ago, students registered with their local school based on their house address. Now, with the internet, students are borderless. Learning can occur anywhere, anytime, anyway and from anyone - including self-taught. Self-directing their education, unschoolers learn through: -Play -Projects -Reading -Volunteering -Games -Sports -Mentorship -Travel -Life In this scenario, it's then the parents' job to provide an environment rich in resources: books, videos, cameras, computer and video games, workbooks, textbooks, projects, jobs, museums, field trips, volunteer programs, atlases and maps, science centers, zoos, museums, theaters, TV, toys, concerts, musical instruments, board games, mentor and apprenticeship programs, music, internet, libraries, instructors, living history parks, art galleries and supplies, sporting venues and equipment, science equipment, corporate venues, parks, travel, and many more. In her book Unschooling to University, my guest on this podcast, Judy Arnall, explores the path of 30 unschooled children who self-directed all or part of their education and were accepted by universities, colleges and other postsecondary schools. Most have already graduated. She outlines that what children need most are close relationships - parents, teachers, siblings, relatives, coaches, and mentors within a wider community, not just within an institutional school. Educational content is everywhere. Caring relationships are not. Families that embrace unschooling do not have to choose between a quality education and a relaxed, connected family lifestyle. They can have both. Judy is a keynote speaker and distinguished toastmaster who gives interactive presentations around the world. She specializes in non-punitive parenting and education practices, and regularly appears on television interviews on CBC, CTV, and Global as well as publications including Chatelaine, Today's Parent, Canadian Living, Parents magazine, The Globe and Mail, Metro and Postmedia News. As a Certified Canadian Family Life Educator (CCFE), she teaches brain and child development, and family communication, at the University of Calgary, Continuing Education, and has taught for Alberta Health Services for 13 years. She founded the non-profit organizations, Attachment Parenting Canada Association, and Unschooling Canada Association. She is also the bestselling author of the following print and e-books: -"Discipline Without Distress: 135 Tools for raising caring, responsible children without time-out, spanking, punishment or bribery." (Translated into 5 languages) -"Plugged-In Parenting: Connecting with the digital generation for health, safety and love." (DVD) -"The Last Word on Parenting Advice." (A lovely little journal) -"Parenting With Patience: Turn frustration into connection with 3 easy steps." (Translated into 2 languages) -"Attachment Parenting Tips Raising Toddlers to Teens." -"Unschooling To University (and colleges): Relationships matter most in a world crammed with content." As a parent of five children, who were raised without any kind of punishment, Judy has a broad understanding of the issues facing parents and the digital generation. She is the proud parent of several university graduates who self-directed their education. During our discussion, you'll discover: -When formal schools were first established, and why...9:00 Schools began around the time of the Industrial Revolution; was a means of keeping kids occupied while parents worked in factories Critics claim it's simply to create factory worker mentality; obedient citizens, quashing critical thinking It has transformed into a billion dollar industry; it's difficult to imagine life without institutionalized school The brain interacts with its environment; it's not a bucket to fill up with facts and figures -Where the modern school system has failed us as a whole...13:00 Schools have stress for kids as well as teachers Teaching is a highly stressful profession Kids experience stress via bullying, expectations, etc. The big failure: a one size fits all approach It does not encourage individualism; it can't because it's a bureaucracy Technology has revolutionized many facets of life; formal education lags behind -How unschooling is different from homeschoolin

However, it seems pretty hard to never mix the two and a meal especially if you're doing strength training with some high intensity and you want to get those calories up. Like for example, when you posted that long article about your muscle mass gains protocol from a few months ago. There were things like extra virgin olive oil alongside tubers and things of that nature. That makes sense to me intuitively, but I was curious if I could get your take on if there's an upper limit on the amount of carbs that is safe to consume alongside fat if you are an active person. In my response, I recommend: -Dietary patterns reflecting healthy food choices are associated with lower serum LPS activity -Endotoxemia is modulated by quantity and quality of dietary fat in older adults. Ep 1072The 7 Different Reasons You Age (& Potent, Proven Molecules To Enhance Longevity & Slow Aging)
I recently read the book "The Kaufmann Protocol: Why We Age and How to Stop It". It is the first comprehensive approach to aging that tackles why we age, and then recommends a strategic, scientific formulation to decelerate the process. The book brings practical information to everyday people, and takes the science of aging out of the laboratory and into the real world. The first half of The Kaufmann Protocol discusses aging on a cellular level, which separates it from all other anti-aging fads. We age because our cells age and it is this understanding that allows the protocol to combat aging for people from all walks of life. This is presented in terms of the seven tenets, or categories, of aging which comprise topics such as DNA alterations, mitochondrial energy, and aging pathways. These are explained in both scientific and laymen terms, such that anyone can understand the process. A series of analogies paralleling the cell to a factory assist the reader in following the logic. The second half of the book reviews the top fifteen molecular agents that curb the aging process. Each agent is examined, discussed and then rated in terms of the seven categories, thus granting it a Kaufmann Rating number. This number is essentially a snapshot of its anti-aging properties, and allows the reader to create a regimen to fit their personal needs. Alternatively, the book suggests the most common protocol, the PANACEA, which is a combination of five molecular agents. This regimen is fantastic for most people over the age of 40, but it certainly is not comprehensive. With the tools and knowledge presented in this book, the reader can determine what is best for them as individuals. This book is also meant to be a complimentary addition to the Kaufmann Protocol App which will allow the user to track their progress and stay up to date with all of the new scientific findings that will continue to make aging truly optional. Dr. Sandra Kaufmann began her academic career in the field of cellular biology, earning a Master’s Degree from the University of Connecticut in Tropical Ecology and Plant Physiology. Turning to medicine, she received her medical Degree at the University of Maryland, and completed a residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins in the field of pediatric anesthesiology. For the last seven years she has been the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, a nationally recognized center of excellence. Her avid interest in the science of anti-aging begun many years ago as an intense hobby. Utilizing her knowledge in cell biology, human pharmacology and physiology, this hobby has now become a main focus. The Kaufmann Protocol represents years of non-clinical research leading the first ever, comprehensive theory of aging, complete with an explanation of why we age and the tools to decelerate the process. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Kaufmann, a pediatrician, became interested in longevity and anti-aging... She became interested in it simply because she wanted to enjoy her life as long as possible After reading and researching, she realized there was no overarching theory, nor a comprehensive system on anti-aging and longevity Aubrey de Grey's SENS Research Foundation -Dr. Kaufmann's 7 Tenets of aging... The 7 Tenets of Aging Information Systems (DNA) Cellular Energy (Mitochondria, NAD) Cellular Pathways (AMP Kinase and mTOR system) Quality Control (autophagy) Security System (Immune system) fails for 3 reasons: Unable to fight infection over time Cells become cancerous over time Upregulates systemic inflammation Work Force (Individual Cells) Short acting cells (few hours to a few days) Goldilocks cells (1-12 years) Cells that live forever Senescent vs. quiescent cells Quiescent is reversible, a state of repair Senescent is partially repaired; damaged but still of some use Waste Management (AGE's, lipofusion) -The numerical ratings system Dr. Kaufmann created based on the 7 Tenets of aging... The Kaufmann Rating System Ratings are from 0-3 (0 being of no value, 3 being highly efficacious) Criteria to determine efficacy: Does it work in theory Does it work in a test tube Does it work in a small rodent lab Does it work in humans It gives people an educated guide to make decisions for themselves -How the app Dr. Kaufmann created helps people understand their genetics and longevity... The "My Protocol" app Her work began as a hobby, yet more and more people came to her seeking a protocol; the app was created to help as many people as possible The app experience Starts out with a quiz Asks if you want a standard protocol or if you want to build your own It follows you every day Rates exercise and foods -The most overhyped yet least effective ingredients, as well as the most effective... The up to date list of recommended ingredients and compounds from Dr. Kaufmann's website The least effective Vitamin E; astaxanthin and delphinidin are more potent alternatives BGF podcast w/

Ep 1071Bonus Episode: Brief Words Of Wisdom, Introspection & Insight From Ben Greenfield.
Lately, I've been thinking quite a bit about life. I've been engaged in some deep introspection and self-inspection, which I think is healthy for everyone to do on a regular basis. In this case, I was forced into this exercise of self-examination, and into a state of extreme humbleness and ego dissolution when I failed to complete a recent event. See, during the Train to Hunt National Championships in Colorado, I came down with an extremely high heart rate, dizziness, extreme fatigue, and an inability to simply put one foot in front of the other. This was likely a combination of pushing myself too hard lately (in both work and travel), along with mild jet lag from having just returned from Europe, the 9700 foot altitude of the race that I hadn't had a chance to prepare for, and a cluster of other emotional factors (feeling guilty about being away from my kids again, missing my wife, feeling too distant from my company Kion) that basically left me dropping out of the race, and lying in my hotel room bed for about twelve hours, barely able to sleep, staring at the ceiling, and thinking generally about life. This is what I posted on Instagram about it. It wretched my heart to have to drop out of the Train To Hunt National Championships competition this weekend. Although I didn't wake up feeling 100% I never imagined I wouldn't make it through the day. I am a firm believer in the sage wisdom that "Pain Is Temporary, But Quitting Lasts Forever". And I’ve only ever had one DNF in my life. However, in this case in very high altitude and extreme heat, my body and brain were sending me every signal that I needed to hit the brakes hard - shortness of breath, very high heart rate, numb hands and feet, extreme dizziness - the works. Feeling like this, I made it through the first several hours of the competition, but realized at that point I needed to live to fight another day. I never like it when I can't "represent" on the field of battle the way I should be able to, but I know when I need to stop before I do lasting damage. Don’t worry, I’ll be back in action soon! A post shared by Ben Greenfield (@bengreenfieldfitness) on Jul 15, 2019 at 9:16pm PDT As I lay there with a journal, a bottle of water, and a plate of kiwi fruit (about all I could find that was healthy to eat in the local area), I had some interesting thoughts that I think you may find valuable for your own life, and give you deeper insight into where I'm coming from, and where I plan to go in the future. Now one thing that you need to understand is that I'm a fan of personality tests. It's something that we are actually very big on at Kion: everyone takes an Enneagram, and my personal Enneagram score puts me in a very, very high category of a what's called a Perfectionist (type 1)and an Achiever (type 3). That is a pretty dang dangerous one-two combo (or I suppose in this case, a one-three combo) because, as you can imagine, this causes me to expect a lot of myself in every task that I attempt to perform while simultaneously taking on a lot of tasks all at once. That's an exhausting combination that in many people can lead to burnout, into spinning too many plates at once, and into trying to do everything that you're doing (which is often too many things) perfectly. This means that you do everything with near-perfect precision but have zero time left over for relaxation, for hobbies, for family, or for self-care, or... ...perfection becomes impossible to sustain, projects begin to decline in quality, and all those plates you're spinning crash to the ground, then eventually you crash to the ground too. In addition, the Achiever personality type on the Enneagram dictates that one who fits that profile tends to try to be who others expect them to be, or at least who they think that others expect them to be. As a matter of fact, the direct quote from the Enneagram is that... ..."in the headlong rush to achieve whatever they believe will make them that more valuable, Achievers can become so alienated from themselves that they no longer know what they truly want or what their real feelings are. Thus, the deeper problem is that their search for a way to be of value increasingly takes them further away from their own essential self with its core of real value. Step-by-step, their own inner core - their heart's desire - is left behind until they no longer recognize it." Now that problem, combined with the perfectionist mentality, can create a person who tries very, very hard to seek the approval of others, to be perfect, to try to be someone they're not and to neglect what makes them truly happy. And frankly, I feel like I've begun to slip into that scenario myself. That's not to say it's wrongto want to achieve excellence in things. Nor is it to say it's wrongto want to achieve great things in life and create a lasting impact. Indeed, when steered in the right direction in a state of true authenticity and also a state that enables one to accept the fact that they

I tried it out this morning and my brain has been humming along quite nicely since about 5am. Here's the full recipe (yeah, you need plenty of ingredients, but it's worth it). Into a Nutribullet or any other heat-friendly blender, add the following: - 2 heaping tablespoons of MiCacao mix (this is a mix of cacao nibs and cacao shells that gives you the experience of drinking pure chocolate with no calories) - 2 packets Four Sigmatic Chaga mushroom extract - 2 packets Four Sigmatic Lion's Mane extract - 1 dropperful Omica Organics butterscotch toffee stevia - 1 teaspoon of a good salt (I used Colima salt) - 12-16 piping hot ounces of Kion Coffee Blend on high for about 90 seconds, then open your blender carefully as contents can expand and get foamy (and the foam is oh-so-delicious). I may or may not have also put 0.5 grams of psilocybin extract into this mix, but that's your call. ;) Bon appetit! Ep 1068132 Pound Bow Draws & 3000+ Calories Burnt Per Day: How Fit Were Our Ancestors (& Where Do Plants & Grains vs. A Carnivore or Ketogenic Diet Fit In)?
When it comes to diet, water, medicine, awareness, nature immersion, movement, hormesis, community, and ancestral technologies, not many folks know quite as much as my guest on today's show: Arthur Haines. Arthur is a Maine hunting and recreation guide, forager, ancestral skills mentor, author, public speaker, and botanical researcher. He grew up in the western mountains of Maine, a rural area that was home to swift streams known for their trout fishing. He spent most of his childhood in the Sandy River Valley hiking, tracking, and foraging. Arthur now runs the Delta Institute of Natural History in Canton, Maine, where he teaches human ecology, focusing on the values of foraging, wildcrafting medicine, and primitive living skills. His series of YouTube videos has inspired thousands of people interested in foraging wild edible and medicinal plants. Arthur recently authored a very big book that I thoroughly enjoyed, entitled “A New Path: To Transcend the Great Forgetting Through Incorporating Ancestral Practices into Contemporary Living”. This guide is a comprehensive work on nature connection and rewilding, detailing how to incorporate ancestral practices into modern living. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The criteria by which humans have become "domesticated"...7:38 Altered temperament -- milder than in the natural state Cows originated from aurochs (now extinct), which were very fierce Altered social hierarchy (establish that humans are in authority) Our ancestors lived a more egalitarian lifestyle than we do today Altered diet Diet today is far different, oftentimes poorer in quality The ability to breed in captivity Humans consider pregnancy/giving birth to be an ailment 99% are institutionalized; take moms out of their most comfortable habitat Arthur maintains that humans display all of the above traits of domesticated animals -How fit were our hunter/gatherer ancestors...14:00 Very active lifestyle out of necessity, depending on resource density Micmac people (still exist in N. America) estimated to travel over a million acre home range over the course of a year What we travel on foot today is a fraction of that 10k steps a day would be close to the average of hunter/gatherers (5-10 miles per day) Arthur does not engage in any type of self-quantification Draw weight of bows among our ancestors: The more energy required to bend the bow, the more energy can be imparted to the arrow Most bows today are ~50 lb. draw Bows of hunter/gatherers were much higher; ~70 lb. The highest recorded were over 130 lbs. -The calorie consumption and burn of our ancestors, contrasted with the modern office worker...23:40 Recent studies have conflicting results; some say it's the same, others say it's far less today Humans tend to be bigger today than in ancestral times; results in more calorie expenditure Hunter/gatherers spent far more calories moving Calorie expenditure today due to complexity of the food Diversity of movement in ancestral times is lost in the modern gym or fitness center -Arthur's personal fitness or movement routine...29:40 Lots of walking; humans are meant to walk with episodes of running Paddling or carrying canoes Grains are milled by hand "Active lifestyle with bouts of athleticism" Brazilian jiu jitsu 1-2 times per week High Intensity Repetitive Training, HIRT (was mentioned in Q&A 398) Moving a killed animal over terrain "True cross fit" training can be found in everyday life, particularly in hunting -How indigenous diets fit within the context of the modern ketogenic or carnivore diets...42:00 Be aware of biological norms 97% of our time on the earth has been as hunter/gatherers Homo sapiens have been shown to be as old as 315,000 years Domesticated human diet for just a short time Wild plants were a huge component of their diets (~60%) Ancestors were not in ketosis on a regular basis Low carb diet is a "new" diet It is efficacious in treating things like epilepsy, not so much as a weight-loss strategy -Arthur's thoughts on the carnivore diet as a sustainable lifestyle choice...51:48 No group of people in history have ever been pure vegetarians Some have eaten mostly meat due to necessity Plants can't be grown due to climate/terrain, etc. However, they would gather plants in large quantities when available Large proportion of Vitamin C would come from plants Diet can be an actual therapy; drugs just cover the symptoms Plants can help us fight off the deleterious aspects of nature (sun exposure, toxins in the air, etc. BGF podcast about the book "Nourishment" by Fred Provenza BGF podcast with Dr. Paul Saladino -How the variety of species of plants that we currently consume compares to what our ancestors would have eaten...1:00:40 Plants are edible for a finite amount of time in the wild; a natural protective mechanism as a result Hypotensive and hypertensive compounds in the same plant; certain suites of plants win out depending on the person Average # of plants consumed by American die

Chock full of skepticism about keto, colonics, charcoal, and more, the article created plenty of buzz—both good and bad—across the internet... ...and in today's podcast, I'm going to address the Vice article in full, including debunking plenty of the BS that was in the article, presenting research-based facts about so-called wellness myths (including a few that will surprise, such as the truth about charcoal toothpaste and sea salt), and set the good folks at Vice right. Ep 1064Mind-Blowing Biohacks You've Never Heard Of, Deep Sleep Enhancement Tricks, Upgrading Your Immune System For Travel, Minimalist Time-Hacked Workouts & Much More!
Two years ago, in the post, “11 Indispensable Lessons I Learned From The Biohacker’s Handbook Of Exercise,” I introduced you to my biohacking friends from Finland – a pioneer of holistic medicine in Finland, human technology and self-quantification specialist, Teemu Arina, superfood hunter and nutritionist, Jaakko Halmetoja, as well as Dr. Olli Sovijärvi, MD. Then, just a few months ago, in the article "14 Biohacking Secrets I Discovered In The Brand New Biohacker’s Handbook", I announced that their entire, 544-page “Biohacker’s Handbook” had been released in the English language - and was an absolutely stellar read jam-packed with tips, tricks, and hacks I’d never before seen, and the ultimate addition to any health, fitness, and nutrition enthusiast’s coffee table or bookshelf. In that article, I shared with you 14 biohacking secrets I gleaned from the brand new beautiful hardcover book, which my guests on today's show - the authors of the book - describe as the “definitive guide to upgrading yourself and unleashing your inner potential.” Five years in making, Biohacker’s Handbook: Upgrade Yourself and Unleash Your Inner Potential has more than 540+ pages, 1560+ references and hundreds of illustrations. It is “the missing manual of the human body” and an essential addition to the library, work desk, kitchen, gym, suitcase and bedroom of anyone with a genuine interest in optimal human performance, health and well-being. You can click here to get the new book, and use code: BEN for a 10% discount. The same guys who wrote the book, also put on the extremely popular Biohacker Summit in global hotspots such as Helsinki, Stockholm, Estonia, London and Toronto - summits where I've personally spoken and where many brands have hit it big for the first time, including Four Sigmatic, Oura, Goodio and Ambronite. Biohacker Summit is one of the top optimal human performance & health conferences on the planet that focuses on combining ancestral living with modern biohacking practices. The upcoming Biohacker Summit 2019 is the 5th year anniversary edition that will be organized on 1-2 November 2019 in Helsinki, Finland with the theme “Optimize Your Day 24/7”, and includes a wild-plant foraged VIP dinner, upgraded parties, a fantastic expo floor to play with new biohacking devices and much more. You can get a bundle of videos from all previous summits by clicking here (use 10% discount code BEN). You can also click here and use code BEN for 10% off tickets to the upcoming summit in Helsinki, taking place Nov 1-2, 2019 in Finland. My first guest on this show, in which we take a deep dive into Biohacker’s Handbook, is Dr. Olli Sovijärvi. He is one of the pioneers of holistic medicine in Finland. In 2006 he graduated from the University of Helsinki with a Licentiate degree in Medicine. In 2010–2011 Dr. Sovijärvi completed an Integral Theory degree at the John F. Kennedy University, focusing on psychology and philosophy. For the first five years of his career as a physician, Dr Sovijärvi was employed by Finland’s first medical recruitment agency. He has worked at nearly 50 different clinics and ER’s around Finland. Dr. Sovijärvi has also acted as consultant to various companies and service providers operating in the fields of wellness and health technology. Between 2013–18 Dr. Sovijärvi practiced medicine at a private clinic that specializes in nutrition and holistic health care. At present, Sovijärvi focuses primarily on the production of scientific content for preventive health care and wellbeing. He is a co-author of the Biohacker’s handbook and co-founder of Biohacking Center. He also runs training sessions and presentations on the topics of biohacking, performance optimization, nutritional issues and maintaining the intestinal balance. At the free time he is an exercise enthusiast and an electronic music DJ. Teemu Arina, my other guest, has a professional career of two decades as a technology entrepreneur, author, professional speaker, and biohacker. Mr. Arina is one of the forefront thinkers on the digital transformation of learning, work, leadership, health and - eventually - the future of humanity. His work focuses on studying the intersection of man and the machine and ways to improve productivity, health, and wellbeing with biological and technological tools. He is a co-author of the Biohacker's Handbook, co-founder of Biohacking Center and curator of Biohacker Summit. In 2015 he received the Leonardo Award under the title "Humanity in digitization", in 2016 he was selected as Top 100 Most Influential People In IT, in 2017 Speaker of the Year by Speakersforum, and in 2018 Leadership Trainer of the Year by Turku School of Economics. In his free time, Teemu enjoys foraging, photography, and hiking. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Olli doesn't use an alarm clock to wake up...12:30 Olli went years sleep-deprived working on his practice No technology after waking up Barefoot outside; ground with the earth (s

Ep 1063The Most Proven Supplements For Performance & Recovery, Cold Water Immersion vs. Cryotherapy, The New Science of Athletic Performance & Much More!
Peak: The New Science of Athletic Performance That is Revolutionizing Sports is a new book, by my fellow C-ISSN and CSCS Dr. Marc Bubbs. It was one of my best reads of the year for all things sports science. A few of my big takeaways include: – Endurance athletes seem to need more sleep than strength athletes, and both seriously suffer when sleep is anything less than 6 hours. – A temperature change in your fingertips is likely the first circadian cue you get at the beginning of the day (I could totally see a potential jet lag device that warms the fingers – I’ll take the royalty for that, please. ;) ). – Aerobic training for strength athletes could assist with their immune system strength. – Loading with probiotics for 2 weeks leading up to competition could give you an ergogenic edge. – Elite athletes on a subpar diet show the same blood biomarkers as those with pre-diabetes and a fructosamine blood test can be one of the best ways to measure this. – Top supplements proven to work in exercise science, with the strongest track history, are creatine, caffeine, nitrate precursors (e.g. beet), whey protein, beta-alanine, and sodium bicarbonate. – Athletes with the CC genotype of the CYP1A2 gene are actually hampered in performance in response to caffeine intake. – Eating carbs too far from a performance event (e.g. 60-75 minutes) results in hypoglycemia before the event vs. consuming them closer to the event (e.g. 20-45 minutes) – Fish oil can stimulate muscle building by stimulating mTOR pathways. Vitamin D and creatine are also very good for recovery, not just performance. Creatine can even be helpful for TBI/concussions. – High sugar intake is associated with lower heart rate variability (HRV). – Cold water immersion (CWI) beats cryotherapy for recovery, hands down. You can get this brand new book here. But I also decided to get author Dr. Marc Bubbs on this podcast to take a deeper dive into he concepts above, and many others. He is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, Performance Nutrition Lead for Canada Basketball Team, Speaker, and former Strength Coach. Marc also hosts the Dr. Bubbs Performance Podcast, connecting listeners with world-leading experts in human performance and health. Dr. Bubbs regularly presents at health, fitness and medical conferences across North America, UK and Europe and consults with professional teams in the NBA, NHL, and MLB teams. He practices in both Toronto, Canada and London, England. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Marc gathers, curates and assimilates new information for his practice...8:45 Struggled as a young athlete with disease, etc. and discovered naturopathic medicine He realized that there wasn't much of a market for it (circa 2000) but he embraced it and became the best at it The more personal contact with the source of info, the better (there's nuance in conversation that doesn't make it into an academic paper) Vast resources available on the Internet (and they're all true, of course) -Current research on caffeine as an ergogenic aid...15:00 Study conducted by Nanci Guest, University of Toronto: Cycling time trial under 3 different conditions: 0 caffeine 2 mg caffeine 4 mg per kg of caffeine AC gene variants had no benefit AA gene variants had benefit at both 2 mg and 4 mg levels Athletes with the CC genotype of the CYP1A2 gene are actually hampered in performance in response to caffeine intake The sweet spot: 3-6 mg of caffeine per kg per day 23 and Me test will identify CYP 1A2 gene -How endurance and strength athletes differ regarding sleep needs...21:18 Endurance athletes fare better on the upper end of the sleep suggested amounts (8-10 hrs) They also suffer more on lack of sleep Greater volume of training More early morning sessions Sleep is #1 recovery tool some docs recommend It's one thing to acknowledge the need, quite another to actually get more sleep -The relationship between finger temperature and circadian rhythm...31:25 Fingertips are the first to sense changes in environment Possibility of warming hands to help body adjust its circadian rhythm while traveling ChiliPad Ben sleeps on -How aerobic training can help the immune system of endurance athletes... "Elite performance is incompatible with frequent illness." --Dr. Michael Gleason Maintaining an aerobic base supports innate immunity Aerobic training in the protocol of a strength athlete will improve immune system Consider incorporating aerobics if red flags of sickness or fatigue occur Could be a means of recovery Simply being well enough to train is a big part of the picture Don't forget fundamentals like washing hands Fingertips, webs and backs of hands are often missed -Probiotics as an ergogenic and performance enhancing tool...42:10 Study on Olympic athletes in 2008: 2/3 of those studied showed benefit in 2 key areas: Preventing upper respiratory tract infection Reversing upper respiratory tract infection Start 2 weeks before event Colostrum can be efficacious while performing in

Ep 1061How To Simulate A Full Sleep Cycle In 20 Minutes, The Best Stress Biohack That Exists, Vagus Nerve Stimulation & Much More!
I'm constantly playing and experimenting with new devices and so-called biohacks to enhance sleep and cognition. One of my favorites of late is a very handy device called the NuCalm, which I've been using to simulate an entire 120 minute sleep cycle with just a 20 minute daily powernap. The NuCalm is a next-level cranial electrotherapy stimulation device that uses both a relaxation cream and mild stimulation to help your brain interrupt the adrenaline and cortisol release by mimicking what naturally occurs in your brain right before you sleep. It includes an app with “music” – which is actually neuroacoustic software that delivers frequencies to your brain which take you down to theta brain wavelength. This thing lets me get a 20-minute intense period of relaxation even when I can’t nap, and I’m now ducking away and using it nearly every day, particularly during travel and on airplanes. It’s spendy, but in my opinion, well worth it. You can get a NuCalm here and save $500 with code: BEN500. My guest on this show is Jim Poole Chairman, President and CEO of Solace Lifesciences, Inc., the maker of NuCalm. J im is an accomplished business executive with extensive experience in the healthcare,. biotechnology, dental, market research, and IT industries. Mr. Poole manages the strategic direction and ongoing operations of Solace Lifesciences, Inc., a neuroscience company focused on personalized wellness and performance. In 2015, Solace Lifesciences, the maker of NuCalm, was granted the world’s sole patent for “Systems and Methods for Balancing and Maintaining the Health of the Human Autonomic Nervous System.” Mr. Poole has successfully launched global products, managed growth strategies, and effectively optimized business operations for large and small organizations alike. Prior to joining Solace Lifesciences, Jim co-founded Focused Evolution, a premier global management strategy-consulting firm. As a Managing Partner, he managed mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, and growth strategies for venture capital and private equity firms. Under Jim’s leadership, Focused Evolution grew into a multi-million dollar consulting firm, serving a global client portfolio of 49 companies, across a broad in a range of industries. Jim serves on the board of directors of several medical device firms around the world. He is a recognized business leader, public speaker, an accomplished author, and has published numerous articles in industry trade journals and lectures all over the world globally on topics including stress, recovery, performance, and business strategy. Jim has published over 30 articles in industry trade journals. A New York state native, Poole earned a BA in psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an MBA in International Business & Marketing from Babson College. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly is a NuCalm?...8:30 Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) Designed to halt the stress response and raise the parasympathetic response Was developed over the course of 20 years by a neuroscientist/quantum physicist/naturopath, Dr. Holloway He's not myopic: you'll find biochemistry, electrical signaling Physiological benefit of living like a monk The hand-held device is the core of the product Brain and body communicate in 2 ways: chemical and electrical messaging Cycles brain wave function into data Key is in controlling the adrenal glands It's FDA cleared to treat insomnia, anxiety, depression Amino acid GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid0); the antithesis of adrenal stimulation GABA is transmitted to the brain via the cream Shuts down the HPA axis (adrenals) The cream contains, in addition to GABA, taurine, glycine, casein tryptic hydrolysate (the protein found in mother's milk) If you didn't get all that, get this: The device relaxes the nervous system, which allows the GABA in the cream to reach the brain and work its magic -How the audio features in the NuCalm app enhance the user experience...22:20 Binaural beats: Discovered in 1839 The ear can't hear them; they bring the signal into the brain Binaural signal processing (512 hz into the left ear; 500 hz into the right ear) Reticular activating system: Stimulation filter to the brain Two functions: pattern recognition and find a shortcut One track on the NuCalm app is over 700 mb of data (compared to 5-6 mb on an iTunes track) Non-linear oscillating algorithm: Takes the brain from beta (awake) to alpha and theta Theta is when the cells cleanup and create energy source for themselves (healing zone) -The science behind going through an entire sleep cycle in a 20 minute power nap...28:00 NuCalm's claims attracted top scientists to validate them World's preeminent expert in HRV verified that the NuCalm truncates a 2 hours of sleep into 20 minutes Won "best of CES" at Consumer Electronics Show Dr. Hollowell was resistant to creating a 20 minute track mimicking an entire sleep cycle (was 40-50 minutes) Supply followed demand; after mon

Ep 1060Beyond 23&Me: A Deep Dive Into Ben Greenfield's Personal DNA Results (& How To Get Your Own Genes Interpreted).
I'm constantly blown away by the amount of genetic data and actionable information one can garner from a simple bit of saliva. In today's episode, you're going to get an insider glimpse into how to go way beyond something as simple as 23AndMe or Ancestry and instead learn how to get truly useful health information that you can use to enhance health, performance, sleep, gut function, neurotransmitters and cognition and much more. My guest on this podcast, Dr. Mansoor Mohammed, has an extremely impressive background in the field of genetics. His credentials include: -BSc. Specialized Honours in Molecular Genetics | University of Guelph | Guelph -Doctor of Philosophy with Distinction in Molecular Genetics & Immunology | University of Guelph | Guelph -Postdoctoral Clinical Cytogenetics Fellowship | University of California | Los Angeles -Postdoctoral Clinical Cytogenetics Fellowship | Baylor College of Medicine | Houston Dr. Mansoor is now the President and CSO of The DNA Company, a leading and innovative provider of comprehensive Functional Genomics testing and consulting and an industry first: individually customized supplements based on your genetics. He is widely regarded as a pioneer in medical genomics and has been the recipient of multiple academic and industry awards. He is the holder of several patents in the general fields of molecular diagnostics and genomics research and is one of the most sought-after national and international conference speakers in the genre of personalized medicine. Prior to his role at The DNA Company, Dr. Mansoor was: - Founder and President of ManaGene (2010-2018) - CEO of Combimatrix (Nasdaq traded leader in diagnostic genomic microarrays) (2006-2010) - Director of Genomics at Quest Diagnostics (The world’s largest reference laboratory with a market capitalization of over $10 billion US) (2003-2006) - Director of Research and Development at Spectral Genomics (one of the industry’s first commercial genomic microarray developers spun out of Baylor College of Medicine under Dr. Mansoor’s scientific leadership) Dr. Mansoor maintains an active clinical practice as a genomics consultant to some of the leading executive health clinics in Canada and abroad. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What makes each DNA test different and how to choose what's right for you...9:30 Consider the various elements of genetic testing: SNPs (pronounce "snips"; single nucleotide polymorphisms) Copy number variation (CNV) INDEL (insertion/deletion polymorphism) Understand how the various labs go about testing the elements Humans have two identical copies of the DNA code (from each parent) When testing for SNPs, the genetic paragraph is "read" and looks for variations between the two The more paragraphs you try to query simultaneously, the greater risk of error (false negatives/positives) Characteristics of a proper DNA test: Concern is for the physical manifestation of the genes, not the genes themselves Cellular function is key indicator Identify the genes that influence the desired outcome Pinpoint the specific DNA to test vs. "shotgun" approach Avoid drawing data for data's sake -A review of Ben's DNA test and how they compare to his two sons...25:00 Two different reports: Genome Pulse Report and Hormone Pulse Report (looking at the GPR) Vascular function Cells that line the vascular system receive the most wear and tear 9P21 markers (not genes) are correlated with the lining of the blood vessels; "the heart of the human genome" A alleles and G alleles The more G alleles you have, the less resilient is the endothelial lining Increase good quality vegetable matter People with multiple G alleles benefit less from vegetable matter (like red wine) than those with none Smokers are more likely to die of vascular disease than lung disease Glutathione S-Transferase (GST) pathway is one of the key pathways in the body Glutathionization: the cellular process that neutralizes toxins in the body What happens when someone doesn't have 2 copies of a gene... You sometimes have genes you didn't inherit from either parent Talking about SNPs in the gene is irrelevant; As is epigenetics (alter the expression of the genes, not the genes itself) 3 vitally important GST genes: Theta 1, Pai 1, Nu1 Should a person only have 1 copy of a gene, they will produce 50% less than someone with 2 copies Ben Greenfield has 1 copy of the GSTT1 gene (as does 60% of the population) Important to not exceed a healthy toxicity threshold Ben Greenfield does not have the GSTM1 gene at all Useless to discuss SNPs for that gene The M1 gene is a backup: it can be lost with less consequence than other genes (such as the T1) What this means is that Ben Greenfield has low to average glutathione detox capacity Must be more cognizant of diet, environment, etc. Ben's two boys are missing the GSTT1 gene completely -Personalizing diet and/or supplements based on DNA test results...57:25 Youtrients [link] Nothing compares to an optimal diet (ea

Ep 105916 Reasons You're Not Burning Fat (& How To Lose Weight The Right Way)
Several months ago, I filled you in on "The 2 Best Ways To Burn Fat Fast (Without Destroying Your Hormones Or Metabolism)". But what you learned in that article only scratched the surface of the multiple mechanisms underlying why the human body can be resistant to fat loss, and how to achieve truly sustainable, long-lasting weight loss in a safe and efficient manner. So during today's solosode, you'll discover... -How fat actually gets burnt...6:20 Law of conservation of mass: Mass, in an isolated system, is neither created nor destroyed by chemical reactions or physical transformations Fat is primarily disposed of via the breath Calories, as well as excess carbs and proteins, are converted into triglycerides and stored in lipid droplets of adipocytes Excess dietary fat undergoes lipolysis, and then reesterification Triglycerides are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen Oxidation: requires inhalation of oxygen Study: When someone loses weight, where does the fat go? For 22 pounds of fat to be oxidized, 64 pounds of oxygen must be inhaled Results in 61 pounds of carbon dioxide excreted via the lungs and 24 pounds of water excreted via urine, sweat, feces, and breath Average of 17,000 breaths per day will excrete .32 lbs of carbon Sources of carbon (other than eating coal) are: dietary carbs, proteins, and fats If you didn't get all that, get this: Losing fat means consuming less carbon than you've exhaled. Even small quantities of food can foil your efforts at weight loss. The simple solution is to move more and eat less. The 16 reasons you're not burning fat the way you'd like – Chronic Inflammation...12:35 High levels of transforming growth actor beta cause irregular appetite and glucose regulation Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP): calcium-dependent zinc-containing endopeptidases Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF): Aids in the growth of new blood vessels; correlated with obesity Nitric oxide synthase Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) = meta inflammation Nos uncoupling (genetic factors) StrateGene Tree of Life, Bob Miller's site Sugar can be inflammatory but is more quickly metabolized than things like vegetable oil Chronic stress is a factor: overstimulation of the limbic system Cell Danger Response (CDR) Toxic by Neil Nathan Dr. Robert Naviaux – Glycemic variability (GV)...21:05 Refers to the blood glucose variations during the day If GV gets out of control, the body does one of two things: transfers sugar into muscles, or stores as body fat It will become fat tissue if you're not active enough throughout the day Be "ruthlessly" cognizant of blood sugar fluctuations 6 Strategies to control GV Strength training Pre-breakfast fasted cardio Book: Change Your Schedule, Change Your Life Post-prandial walk Standing Plants, herbs, spices Ceylon cinnamon Gymnema sylvestre Berberine Apple cider vinegar Kion Lean Fiber – Cortisol and stress...30:45 Cortisol suppresses insulin secretion Measure heart rate variability (HRV) Oura Ring (Save $50 with code: GREENFIELDOURA) Podcast with building biologist Brian Hoyer Podcast Ep. 397 – Sleep deprivation...34:20 A single night of partial sleep can be deleterious Neuro endocrine effect: reduces levels of leptin; increases levels of ghrelin – Snacking and post-workout calories...35:25 "Grazing" or 6-8 small meals per day is a myth Snacking increases your GV and eliminates benefits of fasting Your body releases more growth hormone during intermittent fasting Grazing throws metabolism into sugar burning mode It takes 3 days, or 4 weeks of extreme calorie restriction for the body to down regulate metabolism The need for protein and carbs right after a workout is a myth The exception: two a day workouts – You're not moving enough...39:47 Fool your body into thinking it's in the "hunter gatherer" mode – Too much exercise...41:30 Excessive exercise, along with other stressors can lead to increased levels of cortisol and inflammation Beyond Training by Ben Greenfield Too much of the same exercise Not enough recovery days Sweet spot: 2-3 days per week, lift heavy stuff 2-3 days high-intensity interval training – Chronic cardio...43:35 Your body will catabolize muscle and store fat High-intensity cardio 2-3 days per week Reduced subcutaneous adiposity of body fat among people who follow these guidelines – The SAID Principle...46:00 Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands Sometimes the best workout plan is the one you're not currently doing Keep the body guessing 5 modifications: Combine exercises Article "complex exercises" Active rest periods Train outside Change the center of gravity Workout at a different time of day – Lack of cold therapy...50:00 Cold is a strong metabolic stimulus Cold thermogenesis occurs when protons are forced across the inner membrane and turned into heat Beige adipose tissue Every day, 2-5 minutes cold exposure (cold shower, cold river or lake) 3x3 cold coolfatburner.com (Use code: BEN10CFB to save 10%) – Hormonal imbalance...52:25 Dutch Test Podcast w/

Ep 1058Ben Greenfield's Top Anti-Aging Tactics: Basic & Ancestral Strategies To Enhance Longevity

Ep 1057CBD & Cannabis Special Episode: How CBD Affects Hormones, Fat Loss, Athletic Performance, Sleep, Recovery & Much More
It's cannabis time! The “Kentucky Castle” is a unique destination hotspot with a full biohacking facility, sauna, farm-to-table restaurant, precision medicine arm, hemp farm, horse facilities, and much more. It is owned by one of the physicians who hosts the “Wild Health” podcast, on which I was recently a guest. Recently, at the castle, I had the pleasure of giving a talk on how to hack your biology and get the most out of the genetics you were born with. Afterward, I took part in a Q&A with several of the physicians in attendance at the conference, which you can also listen to here. But during my time at the castle, I also had a chance to duck away with Dr. Matt Dawson, Dr. Michael Mallin and CBD formulator and researcher Taylor Bright to talk all things cannabis and CBD. We hit record on the mics and recorded the hemp goodness for you on today's episode. In this episode, you'll discover... -The chemical effects of using marijuana... Ep 1056The Search For The Perfect Protein (The Surprising Truth About A Little-Known Supernutrient For Weight Loss, Mood, Fatigue, Insomnia, and More)
In today's podcast episode, we unpack all things amino acids... "...Five months after beginning the amino acids, I achieved a personal best at Ironman Canada, in Penticton B.C. In my new and improved physical state, I began to wonder if my vegetarian, protein- deficient diet was the reason why the anti-cancer enzymes scorched my stomach. Could it be that the mucous lining in my stomach was inadequate, and that had also held back the healing of my hamstring? I very badly wanted to find out, so I decided to try the enzymes again. I followed the full protocol, twelve tablets, six times per day for three consecutive days. I had no adverse reactions, and my stomach was fine. I learned that because my overall body protein levels had normalized, the mucous layer in my stomach was better able to handle the enzymes. What a revelation! I thought, could this also be a key problem with my patients and their various conditions? " Thus begins the new book "The Search For The Perfect Protein", by 42 time Ironman triathlete Dr. David Minkoff. Dr. Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He then completed both a Pediatric Residency and Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of California at San Diego. He worked at the University of California and Children's Hospitals in San Diego as an attending physician in infectious disease while conducting original research on Ribaviron, a broad spectrum anti-viral agent to fight disease. He also co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine. In 1995, his wife became ill, and her physicians couldn't find what was wrong. Not accepting their "no hope" conclusion, Dr. Minkoff went on a search to help her that led him out of emergency medicine into complementary and alternative medicine to find the answers. In the process he gained expertise in Biological medicine, heavy metal detoxification, anti-aging medicine, hormone replacement therapy, functional medicine, energy medicine, neural and prolotherapy, homeopathy and optimum nutrition. He studied under the masters in each of these disciplines until he became an expert in his own right. The answers he found were soon in demand when others learned of his wife’s return to good health. In response to this, he and his wife, Sue Minkoff RN established Lifeworks Wellness Center in 1997 and it quickly became one of the most comprehensive complementary and alternative medicine clinics in the U.S. The demand for the products and protocols he discovered became a catalyst for founding BodyHealth.Com, a nutrition company that now manufactures and distributes these cutting-edge solutions for the many health problems today. Dr. Minkoff writes two free online newsletters, “The Optimum Health Report” and ”The BodyHealth Fitness Newsletter”, to help others learn about optimum health and fitness. In my conversation with Dr. Minkoff, you'll learn... -Dr. Minkoff's history with amino acids and why he wrote his new book... The science behind amino acids and protein wasn't keeping up with the commercial PR and marketing Strained a hamstring while running an Ironman triathlon in 1982 Tried everything possible to no avail Tried amino acids and felt no pain, no discomfort Max heart rate rose by 12 bpm Muscle and bone tissue filled in A patient who was familiar with natural cancer treatment recommended a pancreatic enzyme treatment; had very negative results He then supplemented it with essential amino acids and was perfectly fine Saw potential cure for other problems patients may be having (that are not cancer) ION profile with 40 amino acids - Genova Kit He realized that if it was effective for him, it would be beneficial for others He now sees amino acids as an essential element of a workout and proper recovery Vegans and vegetarians are notoriously deficient in aminos, B12, Iron and other nutrients Highly recommend an Amino supplement -About CHYMO, the thyroid and its interaction with amino acids... Chymotrypsin: an enzyme made in the pancreas that is necessary to digest food Actin: the main protein in muscle; Contains 5800 different amino acids in one chain of the muscle fiber Must be broken down into individual amino acids in order for the intestine to absorb it Vicious cycle: amino acids not enough to make chymotrypsin; can't digest protein properly; amino acids can't get into the bloodstream Many people are iodine deficient Also low in tyrosine (made from the essential amino acid phenylalanine) These are common issues -The link between amino acids/proteins and the gut and digestion... The inner lining of the intestine is one cell thick Leaky barrier membranes: your body gets exposed to foreign proteins 70-80% of your immune system is behind the membrane barrier (Peyer's patches, gut associated lymphoid tissue) Inner lining of the

Ep 1055Water & Water Filtration: Everything You Need To Know About Water Filters, Alkaline Water, Structured Water, Hydrogen Rich Water, Deuterium Depleted Water & Much More!
I get tons of questions about water. What water filter is best? Should I add minerals to my water? What do you think about alkaline water? Structured water? Hydrogen rich water? Deuterium depleted (DDW) water? And much more... So on this podcast, I interview one of the world's leading experts on water and a guy who, along with my father Gary Greenfield, has taught me more about water than just about anyone I know. His name is Robert Slovak. Robert is a degreed Mechanical and Aeronautical & Astronautical engineer best known for co-founding Water Factory Systems in the early 1970’s. He and his brother were among the early developers of Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology and its many applications. Their successful innovations encompassed home and office RO drinking water systems, bottled water production, laboratory purification, hemodialysis, seawater desalination, microchip production, bottled water production, water vending, spot-free vehicle washing and scores more. As a result of the rapid growth of RO applications, Robert’s ongoing seminars and a best-selling industry book on the subject of POU (Point of Use) RO, he became a well-known figure in the water industry. In 1989 Water Factory Systems was purchased by CUNO Inc, a global leader in fluid treatment. Since then, it was acquired by the 3M Corporation, which continues to market many of their original products. Robert officially retired from the US water industry in 1996 and went on to bring his knowledge and experience to Brazil, Asia and other international markets. He put together a team and published Agualatinomerica magazine to establish a legitimate water equipment and education infrastructure in Brazil and South America. His “students” continue to play a major role in Brazil’s water industry. In 2004, while in a remote location of Brazil, Robert became seriously ill and was introduced to an obscure 1897 medical discovery known as Original Quinton Marine Plasma (after the famous revolutionary biologist René Quinton). Robert attributes his "jungle" survival to its remarkable healing properties. This ocean-harvested nutraceutical contains the entire Periodic Table of organo-complexed minerals & trace elements as well as essential and rare micronutrients and has been continuously produced for more than a century. Having been an avid student of health and nutrition science for decades, Robert recognized the remarkable history and efficacy of Quinton Marine Plasma in supporting a wide range of the most difficult health conditions and has distributed Quinton Marine Plasma to leading-edge clinics and health practitioners worldwide since 2008. For the past nine years Robert’s focus has been on bringing a new nutraceutical breakthrough called “Molecular Hydrogen” (H2) to the medical profession and health-minded consumers. This “smallest molecule in the Universe” has been overlooked for its remarkable health benefits until now. With more than 800 worldwide health studies on the subject, physicians, researchers and clinicians have been proclaiming Molecular Hydrogen (H2) as the most unique and versatile antioxidant and signaling molecule. In 2010 Robert co-developed a practical way for everyone to benefit from this discovery by creating the first reactive hydrogen tablet that infuses water with a supersaturated concentration of molecular hydrogen (H2) gas. This proven nutraceutical is now in its 9th year of distribution in both professional medical and consumer markets. In 2011 Robert became a founding investor in the Quicksilver Scientific Corp. that was developing a groundbreaking new technology to deliver nutrients and nutraceuticals to the cells. It is referred to as nano-encapsulated liposomes. In just a few years, Quicksilver Scientific established its scientific dominance in this growing field and is currently expanding its product scope and global distribution. While attending medical and wellness conferences throughout North America, Robert recognized the persistent minefield of water-related misinformation encountered by doctors, patients and consumers alike – that’s after spending nearly 50 years in the water technology industry. This unsettling experience soon turned into the motivation to do something about it and Water & Wellness was established in 2017. A team with more than 150 years of combined experience was assembled to create a product line of advanced Point of Use (POU) and Point of Entry (POE) water treatment systems for health and wellness minded consumers. In addition, a line of synergistic water additives was formulated for the consumer market including Quinton and QuintEssential minerals & trace elements, Active pH Restore alkalizing mineral powder, Active H2 ULTRA molecular H2 tablets and Active Ribose C high-bioavailability vitamin C. Recently, Robert’s 25-year interest in Deuterium Depleted Water (DDW) took a new direction forward. With a combination of Soviet-era research from the 1960's and recent announcements explaining the pr

Ep 1054Young Blood Transfers For Anti-Aging, Alzheimers, Parkinson's & More: The Future Of One Of The Most Cutting-Edge Medical Protocols That Exists.
You've no doubt heard of controversial "young blood transfers", made popular of late in the anti-aging and longevity industry by articles such as: -Questionable “Young Blood” Transfusions Offered in U.S. as Anti-Aging Remedy -New Yorkers will soon be able to have the blood of 16- to 25-year-olds transfused into their body. But does it actually do anything? -Startups Flock to Turn Young Blood Into an Elixir of Youth But what has completely flown under the radar is the fact that plasma transfusions of young blood have been found in clinical research studies to have never-before-seen effects on chronic health conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, autoimmunity and many others. In today's podcast, with Mark Urdahl and his lead nurse Gloria, you'll get never-before-heard breakthrough information on how young blood transfusions really work for these conditions, along with their true effects on anti-aging and longevity. Mark Urdahl, one of my guests on this podcast, serves as Chairman and CEO of the Young Blood Institute, a non-profit corporation conducting clinical trials in the use of therapeutic plasma exchange as a modality to systemically prevent cellular senescence and the onset of associated immunological, neurological, and cardiovascular disorders. Mr. Urdahl and his team at the Young Blood Institute have also pioneered the concurrent use of the world’s most advanced, state-of-the-art, ultrasensitive, high-precision blood serum measurement technologies to capture comprehensive “big data” of the human body, an unprecedented combination of testing technologies in human medicine or human clinical research, in order to understand never-before-seen correlations which might lead to discovery of root causes of age-associated disorders. He began his career with IBM Biomedical Systems, which, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute, invented the world’s first automated blood cell separator, first commercially produced by IBM in the 70’s as the IBM 2997. After IBM sold its Biomedical Systems business unit to COBE Laboratories in 1984, Mr. Urdahl became a systems engineer supporting IBM large systems accounts, including notable innovators in health care management. Mr. Urdahl went on to lead a distinguished career at IBM, where he held management positions in marketing and sales, technology development, corporate development. After IBM, he founded Applied Science Fiction (ASF), a digital imaging company where he served as Chairman and CEO, overseeing the development of over 150 patent applications and licensing its technology to nearly every major imaging OEM worldwide, including Nikon, Agfa, Minolta, and many others. Mr. Urdahl subsequently formed the Young Blood Institute as a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation to research anti-aging therapies under clinical trials, recruiting world-class principal investigators, establishing a nation-wide network of nurses and private care physicians, creating the most advanced biomarker testing platform in the world, and developing a “big data” database capable of storing data in the cloud in perpetuity. In 2008 Mr. Urdahl led an investment group to acquire the storage network monitoring business unit of Finisar Corp, including a portfolio of 20+ patents/applications, to form a privately held company, Virtual Instruments. He subsequently formed the Young Blood Institute to research anti-aging therapies under clinical trials, recruiting world-class principal investigators, establishing a nation-wide network of nurses and private care physicians, creating the most advanced biomarker testing platform in the world, and developing a “big data” database capable of storing data in the cloud in perpetuity. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The history of the world's first blood cell separator... Invented by George Judson in 1965 after his son was diagnosed with leukemia Blood cells were separated manually; very laborious IBM funded this research and many other inventions that have benefited humanity Taber's Medical Encyclopedia -What is blood cell separation and exchange?... Similar to a PRP draw Blood drawn from one arm; spun around in centrifuge; separates red, white, plasma (by gravity); Machine can draw whichever component you want (platelets, plasma, red cells, etc.) Blood is reinserted into the arm sans whichever component you want (ex. plasma) and new plasma is inserted via IV New plasma comes from various sources: actual plasma and purified plasma components Broke college kids donate plasma for gas money (creating a very large plasma pool) Water is taken out of the plasma; what's left is albumin, immunoglobulins, fibrinogen Similar to frozen lemonade (just add water) -How Mark became interested in the transfer of young blood... Was involved in several high-tech yet unfulfilling tasks; desired to do more for humanity Heterochronic parabiosis: the joining of two mice together, one old, one young Systemic milieu Findings of mouse research: There was one soluti

Ep 1053Dangerous Probiotic Myths, The Probiotic Ben Greenfield Uses, Anti-Aging Effects Of Probiotics, Should Males Vs. Females Take Different Probiotics & Much More
Do probiotics really seed or populate your gut? How do you decide which strain or species of probiotic to take? Do certain compounds enhance the efficacy of probiotics? Should probiotics be personalized? I tackle all these probiotic questions and many more in today's episode with Raja Dhir. Raja the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Seed, an ecosystem of kindred scientists, doctors, innovators, entrepreneurs, and translational storytellers from around the world. Seed's members collectively believe in the potential of the microbiome to improve human and planetary health. Raja leads Seed’s research strategy and academic collaborations, clinical trial design, product development, and intellectual property strategy. He is the architect of the Seed Platform and has unique expertise in translating scientific research for product development – including patented inventions to stabilize sensitive compounds to improve human microbiome diversity and inflammatory biomarkers. He’s also the Co- Chair of Seed’s Scientific Advisory Board where Seed focuses on solving complex ecological problems including honeybee colony collapse, plastic degradation, and soil fertility through bacteria. Raja is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Church Lab in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and is a Director and Co-Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for Micropia, a $20MM microbial ecology / education platform and the world’s first museum dedicated exclusively to microbes. He also serves on the Editorial Board for the scientific journal, Microbiome, on the Industry Advisory Committee for the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP), and is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), among others. During our discussion, you'll learn: -Why we misunderstand probiotics, and especially probiotic research...8:30 Raja's research paper: Probiotics: What they are and what they are not We're understanding more and more about the gut and microbiome every day An organism must show that it has a specific effect on the body before the term "probiotic" can be used The term "probiotic" is unregulated in the United States Consumers are way ahead of the science Proper definition of a probiotic: live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host Unscientific research on probiotics has led to damage in credibility in the field Taking one single data set that's not causative and applying the results to the entire field is an unscientific practice -The recent studies on probiotics that Raja mentions, and sometimes criticizes, in his work...13:45 Conducted by the Weizmann Institute Got subjects to consent to invasive small intestinal biopsies, versus just the colon Ordinarily you test the large intestine only An over emphasis on testing stool samples Fallacy: Collecting large amounts of data will give you an accurate answer How classical biologists are different: Have a hypothesis, Narrow down an intervention, Test (in a large enough sample size) and look for biomarkers that change in the host How the test worked: Gave 3 groups of people large amounts of antibiotics Gave one group probiotics, one group allowed to recover spontaneously (watchful waiting), third group FMT; their own stool injected back in rectally Hypothesis: What's the fastest way of recovering to your normal base line? After 90 days, everything lost statistical significance; all 3 groups indistinguishable from one another 3 things you can do to improve an infant's health Vaginal birth Not having antibiotics during birth (if you have a c-section) Breast feeding Do at least 2 of the 3 correctly, you dramatically increase the chances that the infant's microbiome will develop normally Science should not be a sensationalistic field Temptation to exploit research for short-term PR gains -What regulations or standardizations exist when it comes to the microbiome and probiotics...23:25 Contract manufacturers: used by big dairy companies, big business, probiotics found in local grocery stores European facilities are better equipped due to dietary differences Species vs Strains: Ex: Chihuahuas and dobermans are different strains of the same species Some strains are up to 70% different from strains of the same species Must be tested on humans, otherwise should be called a microbial product vs. a probiotic product Some less disciplined companies benefit from the existing ambiguities in the probiotic field -Raja's answer to the flaws in probiotic research he discusses in his paper and in his work...27:15 The paper concludes with an optimistic view; possible changes in the next 5 years Click here for a table of Physiological and metabolic processes influenced by the human microbiome according to Raja's research paper. I took it prior to a workout and I felt an analgesic effect. I've had many shoulder surgeries, and I felt a lot better when I took this. I did some more research and saw it is touted as having anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. I know that antioxidants can blunt the hormetic effect of exercise. So should I be worried about that with this supplement? Ep 1050The Wildatarian Diet: Living As Nature Intended: A Customized Nutritional Approach for Optimal Health, Energy and Vitality.
Most diet trends have one thing in common: they offer a one-size-fits-all approach and are not designed for your unique body and health history. Yet society insists time and time again on ordering the “diet du jour,” from low-carb/low-fat to the latest low-carb/high-fat diet. For many, it is not working – and, in some cases, it is harmful. But I recently read a book about a new approach to diet and living that is always on trend and in style, because it is customized to you and only you: The Wildatarian Diet: Living As Nature Intended: A Customized Nutritional Approach for Optimal Health, Energy and Vitality. This book introduces several evolved and sustainable concepts that are backed by science and supported by thousands of clinical outcomes from author Teri Cochrane, my guest on this podcast. Teri is an integrative practitioner and thought leader in nutritional counseling. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida, and she is a graduate of the Huntington College of Health Sciences and the National Leadership Institute. She also has extensive practices, such as healing touch, craniosacral therapy and herbology. She has developed her own methodology, "The Cochrane Method," which integrates a multi- level nutritional approach, including observation and listening, to develop a bio-individualized plan for her clients. Teri is currently in private practice in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area, where she specializes in complex health conditions and elite athletic performance. She serves as a nutritional counselor to ballerinas and Olympic hopefuls, including one of the most promising young swimmers in the country. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Terri came about the name "Wildatarian"...6:15 "Patient Zero" (real name is Glenn) had a rare form of cancer called amyloidosis Glenn was told to eat lots of protein after chemo; after two rounds, had congestive heart and kidney failure Realized the amyloids were coming from the food supply Took away pork, chicken, turkey; gave him wild game (bison, Cornish game hens, etc.) Wildatarians can be plant-based, meat-based; based on your genetic makeup Amyloids develop in farm-raised meats but not in wild game; they are indigestible Similar to an auto-immune issue This approach has helped treat Hashimoto's disease How to test for amyloids: Protein in urine Light chain (more accurate) -How Terri determines the appropriate diet for a patient...15:00 We're all bioindividual Genetic testing used: 23 and Me Many variants done in house Who should avoid sulfur in their diet Roundup (the pesticide) prevents sulfur in our food from becoming sulfate Kale is problematic Beware of sulfur-based supplements touted as antioxidants (glutathione) Center lane vs. "fringe" foods Focus on genetic blueprint first The body is a constant communicator; we're not learned in its tells -How Terri's clients access wild game, especially when living in urban areas...27:55 Dartagnan Foods (link) Major grocers are carrying bison, New Zealand lamb, etc. Opt for a sustainably raised approach to our animals Why is methane an issue today, after millennia of cows on the planet? They are being fed food they cannot digest Look for small and medium local farmers Organic standards have been diluted Wildatarian veggies are those which are suited to your genetic makeup Cilantro and cucumber juice is Terri's favorite drink -Why Terri frowns upon the intake of peanuts...34:35 An aflatoxin: "it's the devil on steroids" It's highly fungal (feeds cancer, candida) Peanut butter is the one food she'll never have on her plate She recommends sunflower butter -Why Terri loves beans and the best way to prepare them...39:22 Pressure cooker breaks down the "exoskeletons" of the beans Apple cider vinegar Green pepper helps break down the beans -What is "ballerina syndrome"...41:53 Terri works with the Washington Ballet Elite athletes push their bodies through epinephrine to manage the sugar regulation Epinephrine is a stress hormone, secreted by the adrenals It opens the gut, causes leaky gut syndrome It disregulates insulin -How an athlete, who consumes supplements, bars, etc. would do the wildatarian diet...46:00 -Where supplements and pills fit into the wildatarian diet...53:35 We don't have nutrient rich food Supplement strategically Wildatarian Quiz -And much more... Ep 1049How To Use The Wonderful World Of Self-Quantification To Take Your Health Into Your Own Hands (& The 11 Best Blood Tests To Get).
I recently had the pleasure to speak at the fabulous and intriguing "Kentucky Castle", a unique destination hotspot with a full biohacking facility, sauna, farm-to-table restaurant, precision medicine arm, hemp farm, horse facilities and much more. The castle is owned by one of the physicians who hosts the "Wild Health" podcast, on which I was recently a guest. This is part one of a two part series that addresses the oft-confusing world of "taking your health into your own hands" via genetic testing, blood and biomarker tracking, sleep measurements and other forms of self-quantification. In part two, you'll get to sit in on a very interesting post-talk Q&A with myself and several of the physicians in attendance at the conference. Ep 1046How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age: The Longevity Paradox & The 7 Deadly Myths Of Aging
My guest on today's podcast and former guest on my show "The Truth About Lectins And The Plant Paradox", Dr. Steven Gundry proposes in his new book "The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age", that the “diseases of aging” we most fear are not simply a function of age; but rather, they are a byproduct of the way we have lived over the decades. In The Longevity Paradox, he maps out a new approach to aging well—one that is based on supporting the health of the “oldest” parts of us: the microorganisms that live within our bodies. He believes that - from diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s to common ailments like arthritis to our weight and the appearance of our skin, these bugs are in the driver’s seat, controlling our quality of life as we age. Dr. Gundry is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health. There, he invented devices that reverse the cell death seen in acute heart attacks; variations of these devices subsequently became the Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula. It has become the world’s most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery. After completing a fellowship in congenital heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, in London, Dr. Gundry was recruited as Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. There, he and his partner, Leonard Bailey, pioneered infant and pediatric heart transplantation. Together, they have performed more such transplants than any other surgeons in the world. During his tenure at Loma Linda, Dr. Gundry pioneered the field of xenotransplantation, the study of how the genes of one species react to the transplanted heart of a foreign species. He was one of the original twenty investigators of the first FDA-approved implantable left ventricular assist device (a kind of artificial heart). Dr. Gundry is also the inventor of the Gundry Ministernomy, the widely used minimally invasive approach to aortic- or mitral-valve repair, the Gundry Lateral Tunnel, a “living” tissue that can rebuild parts of the heart in children with severe congenital heart malformations; and the Skoosh™ venous cannula, the most widely used cannula in minimally invasive heart operations. One of the fathers of robotic surgery, as a consultant to Computer Motion (now Intuitive Surgical), Dr. Gundry received early FDA approval to use robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for coronary artery-bypass and mitral-valve operations. He holds patents on devices for connecting blood vessels and coronary artery bypasses without sutures, as well as for repairing the mitral valve without the need for sutures or a heart-lung machine. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASIAO), and was a founding board member and treasurer of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS). He recently completed two successive elected terms as President of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Desert Division. Dr. Gundry has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American Surgical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Chest Physicians. He is also the author of more than three hundred articles, chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals on surgical, immunology, genetic, nutrition, and lipid investigations. He has operated in more than thirty countries, including charitable missions to China, India, and Zimbabwe. Inspired by the stunning reversal of coronary artery disease in an “inoperable” patient, using a combination of dietary changes and nutriceutical supplements, in 2001, Dr. Gundry changed the path of his career. An obese, chronic “diet” failure himself, he adapted his undergraduate Yale University thesis to design a diet based on evolutionary genetic coding, which enabled him to reverse his own medical problems. In the process, he effortlessly lost 70 pounds. The equally astonishing results from following what he came to call Diet Evolution in several of his staff led Dr. Gundry to accept a position in Palm Springs where he could devote his efforts to disease reversal. No longer satisfied with repairing the damage of chronic diseases, since 2002, Dr. Gundry founded and has served as Medical Director of The International Heart and Lung Institute in Palm Springs, California, which serves patients referred from across the nation. Ep 1045The Peptides Podcast: Everything You Need To Know About Anti-Aging, Muscle Gain, Fat Loss & Recovery Peptides.
I receive plenty of questions about peptides and SARMs, including: -How do peptides work? -What is the safety/side effects of peptides? -What are the best anti-aging peptides? -What are the best fat loss and muscle gain peptides? -What are the best recovery peptides? -What peptides work for cognition and neural enhancement? -How do you properly mix and administer peptides? -Do peptides need to be "cycled"? My guest on today's show, Jean-François Tremblay, comes highly recommended by former podcast guest and regenerative medicine physician Dr. Matt Cook as one of the world's leading experts on the wonderful world of peptides and SARMs. Dr. Tremblay studied Exercise Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology. He has been investigating (in theory and in practice) peptides and SARMs since the 1990's and now makes peptides his main research subject. He has developed a wealth of expertise on peptides and SARMs and their practical applications in sports performance, anti-aging and health in general. During my discussion with Jean-François Tremblay, you'll discover: -The science of peptides and how they work...5:55 Amino acids linked together Growth hormone contains 191 amino acids When enough peptides link together, it becomes a protein Demistifying some of the myths surrounding peptides: They must be refrigerated at all times (only for certain peptides) Methionine bonds Most peptides are long chain, stable at room temp, More sensitive to light than heat (degradation more likely result of overexposure to light than heat) The "local effect" (BPC 157 and TB 500) -The pros and cons of various means of injecting peptides...15:15 Intra-nasal absorption is not 100%; however, what is injected has a better chance of reaching the brain Semax: Originally researched in USSR during the Cold War Russians are meticulous in their research; however, lacking in ethics Icarus documentary Researched on humans before other animals; published only after testing on animals -Peptide safety and side effects of use...21:30 Worst-case scenario of "overdosing" on peptides is that it simply doesn't work; no notable negative side effects Not the case with nootropics; you're messing with the brain's chemistry Bottom line: Don't throw caution to the wind. Be aware of proper dosages and administer correctly to the best of your knowledge -Legality and sourcing issues with peptides...32:15 99% of them come from China (even if the label says "Made in the USA") Chinese government dictates who produces what, such as peptides Chinese company released a growth hormone which was very effective, then replaced it with another (under the same name) that had negative side effects Scandinavian company was dishonest about dosage of melanotan (5 mg when advertised as 10 mg) There are only a couple of sources, albeit distributed by many different brands The bacteriostatic water included with the peptide should be crystal clear when it's added There's a reason for the high cost: equipment, repairs, etc. -Whether peptides need to be "cycled" in their use...44:00 Some, yes. It depends on the peptide Effect of BPC-157 lasts around 6 hours Effect of TB-500 lasts 10-15 days; but it's out of your system in 12 hours -Recommended anti-aging peptides...49:30 Epitalon The effects are not as immediate as peptides such as BPC-157 MOTS-c Humanan -The best peptides for fat loss...58:38 There is no "magic pill" Take care of the low hanging fruit: exercise, diet, etc. Tesamorelin (Egrifta) CJC-1295 (no dac version) -Recommended peptides for muscle gain...1:02:45 Nothing for non-competitive use Requires strict discipline and patience; marginal results at best -Jean-François' peptide regimen...1:04:51 Epitalon DSIP (affects the delta phase of sleep only) TB-500 (once a month) BPC-157 (once every couple of months) Thymus (timalin or vilon) twice a year Semax very occasionally -And much more... Ep 1044The Problem With Sleeping On Your Side, How To Sleep On Your Back, Little-Known Sleep Enhancement Tricks & Much More!
Over the past 20 years, my guest on today's show, Dr. Peter Martone, has been trying to recommend pillows for his patients that would put their head in the correct position so that they could get a great night's sleep and wake up rested. He could not find one, and he would have patients purchase soft down pillows and stuff them under their necks. He found that a conventional pillow would loose its shape and end up on the floor. The problem is that a pillow is for your head and you can not support your head to get a great night sleep. But one day he was watching the movie “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” in 2000 and the two actors came out of the room after “cuddling” all night. The camera gave a quick glimpse of the room they came out of. It showed what the two actors slept on, and to his amazement it was just a thin pad for their body and a block of wood in lieu of a pillow for their head. In that lightbulb moment, Dr. Martone invented the exact sleeping tool we discuss on today's podcast. He's one of the smartest guys I've ever talked to when it comes to sleep, so prepare to optimize your rest and recovery biomechanics like never before! During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon inspired Dr. Martone's invention... One of the props was a piece of wood, not as a pillow, but for their neck Peter had shoulder issues, couldn't identify the cause While camping, he used a shoe under his neck for sleeping; woke up well rested Used a shoe, and other odd objects for sleeping; shoulder and other health issues were resolved -Surprising problems caused by sleeping on one's side... 90% of Peter's patients have some type of damage to their cervical curve in the neck We lose the curve doing day to day activities, and there's nothing to repair it at night 98% of patients who lose the curve in their neck develop an unnatural curve in their lower back This eventually leads to scoliosis in the lower back The vermis portion of the brain: main function is to control the body's proprioception 80% of proprioception into the brain comes from the spinal cord The vermis atrophies due to loss of proprioception It affects the pre-frontal cortex (executive functioning) Decreasing the curve in the spine severely limits glymphatic drainage Why we toss and turn at night: Pain centers and nerve centers are very close together When you fall asleep on your side, you can only stay in that position for a short period of time Body should be in a "neutral sleeping position" Alcohol inhibits pain sensors. You stay in the same position longer, and wake up in pain OURA ring If you didn't get all that, get this: Loss of the cervical curve = degeneration of the spine. It also causes the vermis to atrophy, which negatively affects the pre-frontal cortex. Side sleeping causes pain and discomfort, which in turn affects the quality of our sleep. The advantages of sleeping on the back versus the side or stomach... Use a pillow for the neck rather than the head Restore the cervical curve and decrease lumbar tension -How to train yourself to sleep on your back... Just start on your back 1-2 hours per night will be enough to help restore the cervical curve in your neck Sleep wedge pillow: 5-10 degree angle, should go to the base of your spine Gravity beds on Amazon The podcast that discusses Gravity beds The body will eventually be able to go through the night on your back Total 2-3 month transition 650 down pillow Sleeping on your back, you distribute your body weight over the greatest amount of space -The little-known hack called "Remembering" that may help with sleep problems... Peter struggled to sleep due to numerous things he was thinking about Needed to be "in control" of something Visualized people sitting in a specific seat after giving a talk; he went right to sleep Focus on something, but don't think about it You can't think yourself to sleep; you have to remember yourself to sleep Dreams are how the mind categorizes the day's events The further back in time you can remember, the more efficacious this technique will be -Ways to control your core temperature while sleeping... Allostatic load: Hierarchy of needs in bodily functions (heart pumping vs. growing fingernails) Your body cares more about your core temperature than even the immune system We get sick because there's a finite amount of energy our body can distribute Maintaining the body's core temperature maintains the allostatic load in our entire body Keep your core as warm as possible; keep hands, feet and head exposed People like to sleep on their side so they can curl up, feel protected Use a weighted blanket for a similar effect "Head garage" Place a pillow over your head, just above the nose -More little-known sleep hacks... First 2 hours of the day are the most productive and alert The story of Edison's balls... Write things down, then go to sleep. Ep 1043Why Your Vitamin E Supplement Could Be Harming You (& The "One Plant Wonder" Alternative That Could Be The Single Most Powerful Molecule If You're Stranded On A Desert Island).
At the recent A4M conference in Vegas, I ran into intriguing research from Dr. Barrie Tan, a scientist with a Ph.D in Chemistry and Biochemistry. For the last 35 years, Barrie has immersed himself in the world of Vitamin E (particularly from annatto) and is considered one of the world’s foremost experts credited with discovering a molecule called "tocotrienol" from three major natural sources: -Palm: from his native Malaysia... -Rice: at the invitation of the Prince of Thailand... -Annatto: chance finding while in Ecuador searching for lutein... It turned out that palm and rice lacked the potency as they contain too much tocopherol, so Barrie moved his research interest away briefly from tocotrienol, when by serendipity he found the best-in-class tocotrienol in the annatto plant from the Amazon. Since then, Barrie’s relationship with annatto has spanned 20 years. Barrie has worked with the US Armed Forces on using tocotrienol on “radiation countermeasures” and pioneered the science behind the annatto working with the leading scientists in the world to prove the multiple benefits of tocotrienol. Meanwhile, everyone (lay folk and nutritionist) is languishing with the lack-luster non-performing tocopherol, which Barrie calls the“wrong way to E.” Most tocopherol trials failed and did not deliver. But in multiple clinical trials spanning chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteopenia, and inflammation, tocotrienol from annatto has proven clinical benefits. Barrie is currently working on multiple cancer trials after preliminary success with end-stage patients. This is because not all forms of Vitamin E are created equal... ...Vitamin E is not a single nutrient, but rather a complex made up of 8 distinct compounds: 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols. These components have slightly different chemical structures, and these differences impart unique properties that influence their biochemical functions and their effects in the body. Most conventional supplements are typically rich in tocopherols—alpha-tocopherol, in particular—but the tocotrienol fractions have unique effects across a variety of tissues that make them desirable to supplement on their own, without tocopherols. Tocotrienols, especially delta-tocotrienol as sourced from the annatto plant (bixa orellana), have shown impressive effects in supporting overall health. Tocotrienols are associated with significantly positive effects on cardiovascular health, particularly with regard to influencing healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They may also be beneficial for a healthy inflammatory response, an important asset since chronic inflammation is a factor in damage to the cardiovascular system. Having a positive influence on lipids (fats in the blood), tocotrienols may be beneficial for those with a buildup of fat in the liver, as well as those who need help managing blood sugar and insulin levels. Clinical research also suggests tocotrienols may be a valuable addition to the supplement regimens of those who need nutritional support for strong, healthy bones. Here is a recent remark of Jonathan Lizotte, Designs for Health Founder and Board Chairman: “The health benefits realized by annatto tocotrienol go beyond that of any other nutrient I know. It’s the one supplement I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island! This is a change for me as after 35 years in this industry, my top desert island supplements have switched between magnesium and fish oil and now it stands firmly as annatto tocotrienol alone. A minimum of 150 mg per day is a must for every adult alive.” Apart from tocotrienol, Barrie discovered and has extracted the first-in-class geranylgeraniol (GG), also from the annatto plant. GG has benefits as 1) testosterone and progesterone booster; 2) pain alleviation and; 3) sarcopenia, myopathy and muscle building from this endogenous nutrient. GG is the last common step between plant and mammal (has huge implications), and may possibly be the last frontier in anti-aging nutrients. Here are Dr. Tan’s two anti-aging bottom-line nutrients: tocotrienol (exogenous) will work from outside-in, and geranylgeraniol (endogenous) will work from inside-out. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Tan discovered Annatto and became interested in Vitamin E...9:05 Began while an assistant prof at U of Mass in Amherst Palm oil in his native Malaysia is orange; is bleached out when it's processed Received grant from Malaysian government to research Research process on palm oil: Remove all fats and oil Remove all kerosene colors (orange) 25% of what was left was alpha-tocopherol, the most common variant of Vitamin E Remainder was tocotrienol Led to research on different forms of lung cancer (stopped soon after) Prince of Thailand hired him to research Buddhists don't like anything mitochondrial related Wanted plant-derived, not animal-derived research Most beneficial results

Ep 1042Shark Attacks On Goats, The Ethics Of Hunting, Human Stress Resilience & Much More! (Special Hawaii Hunting Episode)
In today's podcast, I am joined by my friends Kyle Thiermann, Chris Ryan and Mark Healey for witty banter, philosophizing, and intellectually stimulating conversation straight from the island of Hawaii, where we - along with several others mentioned in this podcast episode, such as Dr. Peter Attia, Kyle Kingsbury and Hawaii hunting guide Justin Lee - took a break from hunting, hiking, spearfishing and dressing meat to gather round the podcasting mics. In this conversation, you'll hear... -Recap of the trip...6:47 Chris was a last minute substitute Primal surroundings: goat head in the back of the pickup They were all dropped off by helicopter on various spots on the Big Island Ben engaged in spearfishing; caught Hawaiian lobster, opi'i fish Impossible to replicate their meals in a restaurant -Ben is asked about consuming energy bars while facing dehydration...12:17 If you're in an extreme dehydration situation, you're probably starving to death, so don't throw them out They could potentially be used as a water filter because they're so thick Coffee and beer don't actually dehydrate you Energy bars have moisture in them Depends on salt content, moisture level, etc. -How ranchers on the island of Kaho'olawe used goats to prevent sharks from attacking their herd...14:05 Sharks would attack as they were loaded onto ships for transport Ranchers pushed a herd of goats tied to each other off a cliff The cattle was transported while the sharks feasted on the goats -Discussion about the sustainability of humans hunting their own meat in the modern world...15:30 Hunting is necessary in Hawai'i for sustainability of the land It's not cheaper when you factor in ammo, time spent hunting, obtaining permits, etc. Large amounts of money from hunting is invested into environmental sustainability Eradication vs. management Killing an animal is a deeply personal experience Everyone who eats meat should hunt at least once We are what we eat: cruelty, apathy, torture, etc. -How do our thoughts shape our health?... Book: The Biology of Belief by Dr. Bruce Lipton Book: Mind to Matter by Dr. Dawson Church Epigenetics: Behavior of parents/ancestors affects their children's behavior and instincts Do humans have instincts? Going for the nipple Fear of snakes "Comparing notes" after a hunt separated humans from other animals Coordinated hunting -Our understanding of human history as it pertains to resilience toward stress... Research suggests we become more sensitive to stress rather than more resilient Chronic stressors (business responsibilities) our ancestors didn't deal with Experiencing stress without realizing it, or thinking you're relaxed Practice makes automatic Difference between stress and excitement Alpha vs. beta brain waves Alpha: what you experience in "the flow"; familiar, happy, focused Beta: Higher level of excitement; less predictability Parasympathetic vs. sympathetic nervous system Sympathetic: fight and flight nervous system Parasympathetic: rest and digestive nervous system Vagus nerve feeds into the sinoatrial node of the heart You want high heart rate variability (HRV) Vagus nerve is operating the parasympathetic system properly Meditating, chanting, cold water assist with maintaining high HRV -How stress affects rigor mortis (in hunted game) and cramping Deer reach rigor mortis in 20 minutes when corralled (stressed) and over an hour when killed in the wild You cramp in stressful situations while exercising due to calcium release Sour, spicy taste overrides neuronal reflex Golgi tendon organ limits the contraction, but is overridden by neuronal reflex Other animals don't have this, and put far more stress on their muscles When mom lifts a car to save the baby, the brain, because of extreme stress, overrides the golgi tendon organ Brain over brawn: why humans have the golgi tendon organ and other animals don't -The evolving understanding of convenience vs. an appreciation of our history... Infant formula: no colostrum, fatty acid, Breast milk is a fatty, highly addictive food; you'd be obese if you drank it all your life The microbiome is a gift to the environmental movement Your surroundings impact your gut health -Is bottled water really cleaner and safer than tap water?... FDA treats bottled water as a food product; tap water is treated as water, so it's tested far more often Chlorine, fluoride is in the tap water Bottled water comes from a filtered source -Why Hawai'i is so freaking amazing... Hawai'i had cattle ranchers before California Beach as well as mountain culture Cultural holocaust: Christian missionaries Hawaiian language stayed alive in the cattle ranchers: It was more functional Perhaps reflective of the number of colors, sights and scents in Hawai'i Akin to why podcasts are popular: you can break down concepts you can't on CNN -How Mark Healy narrowly escaped death while surfing in Fiji... Grew up on North Shore of Oahu; got noticed by important surfer dudes Ended up going to Fiji for his firs

Ep 1041Gretchen Rubin Interview On How To Declutter Your Home & Your Life For Outer Order, Inner Calm & Happiness.
Outer order contributes to inner calm. And for most of us, a rigid, one-size-fits-all solution doesn't work. The fact is, when we tailor our approach to suit our own particular challenges and habits, we're then able to create the order that will make our lives happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative. My guest on today's show - Gretchen Rubin - has found that getting control of our stuff makes us feel more in control of our lives. By getting rid of things we don't use, don't need, or don't love, we free our minds (and our shelves) for what we truly value. With a sense of fun, and a clear idea of what's realistic for most people, Gretchen suggests dozens of manageable steps for creating a more serene, orderly environment—one that helps us to create the lives we want. Gretchen is the author of several books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers: Better Than Before: A Day by Day Journal The Happiness Project Happier at Home And most recently: Outer Order, Inner Calm: Declutter and Organize to Make More Room for Happiness. She has an enormous readership, both in print and online, and her books have sold more than three million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages. She makes frequent TV appearances and is in much demand as a speaker. On her weekly podcast, Happier with Gretchen Rubin, she discusses good habits and happiness with her sister Elizabeth Craft. Rubin started her career in law and was clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor when she realized she wanted to be a writer. She lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What inspired Gretchen to write her book...7:40 Began with The Happiness Project (link) Disproportinate connection between outer order and inner calm (clutter blind) Getting control of our "stuff" makes us feel in control of our lives Empowers you to tackle the big projects we might otherwise avoid -If there has been scientific research to substantiate Gretchen's findings...9:00 Yes, but there's a problem: People want to know what's "best" way to clear clutter, when to do certain tasks People are different; they have strengths where others have weaknesses Some people thrive in a little bit of clutter No one size fits all approach -The criteria one can use to decide what goes and what stays...11:15 "Don't get organized"; Start by getting rid of things Marie Kondo's guidance (does this spark joy?) is slightly lofty in its aspirations Three questions to ask: Do I need this? Do I love this? Do I (or will I) use this? Be realistic about what "someday" means in the context of if and when you'll use something Ask yourself, "Have I thought about getting rid of this more than 3 times?" We often overestimate what we can do in a short time, and underestimate what we can do in a longer period of time -Whether decluttering is the same as minimalism...18:20 Minimalism as we know it is a bit extreme in Gretchen's view There are simplicity lovers and abundance lovers It all goes back to there's no one size fits all approach -How to mentally "let go" of things...20:25 The "fantasy self" Be honest with yourself: will you really use that thing? It frees up mental guilt, as well as space for other goals and desires Nostalgia, past self The best way to clear clutter is to not buy stuff in the first place Have a box of clutter, put a date on it, then throw it away after one year without looking inside it Imagine someone else enjoying the stuff Give away or recycle when possible "You created the donation to the landfill when you bought it" "Store it at the store" -Best practices in shopping online and offline to avoid unnecessary clutter...30:07 There are under buyers and over buyers Always shop as a guest; helps cut down on impulse buying Unsubscribe to all promotional newsletters Don't subscribe in the first place Force yourself to hold things in your arms whenever possible Break the impulse by intentionally making things inconvenient Don't touch, don't taste Book: Why We Buy Set limits and check with a partner (spouses) before purchasing Make lists -What a "clutter magnet" is, and why it's important...39:25 Identify the spot where clutter tends to accumulate; make a point to keep it clean every day It's easier to maintain once you take it back to "clear" It will spark joy -How to train children to declutter their personal spaces...43:15 Don't think of yourself as the potter who's molding the clay Help them to be honest about what they need, or use Everything sparks joy for children -Whether or not it's important to make your bed every morning...48:00 Establishing a bit of order in the environment is a morale boost Your bed is much closer to you than a chair; you may feel in better order Christian Gratitude Journal -Whether or not it's wise to find others to do your decluttering for you...53:25 Difficult due to the personal nature of your own stuff Maybe to help stay on task, help with the heavy lifti

Ep 1040The Most Powerful Electrical Muscle Stimulation Device Known To Humankind (& Exactly How To Use It).
I recently posted the following to my newsletter weekly roundup: "I only did two workouts this week and was sore as hell. You can view both my workouts in .pdf format by clicking here for Workout 1 and clicking here for Workout 2. The workouts were supplied to me by the wicked smart guys over at Neu.fit and I performed them while wearing the NEUBIE, which is NeuFit’s patent-pending electro-stimulation device. NEUBIE is an acronym for “NEURO-BIO-ELECTRIC STIMULATOR.” The NEUBIE can find neurological deficits in the human body with incredible precision, and has two main benefits – 1) it provides direct current (DC), and 2) it matches the signals the nervous system already sends naturally on its own. Using DC is important because it has numerous, positive biological effects. DC fields accelerate the body’s own physiological processes of healing, repair, and regeneration. Although this has been known for a long time, most devices out there are alternating current (AC). These devices are cheaper and easier to engineer, and most people don’t know the difference. Unfortunately, they don’t have anywhere near the effect at the cellular level. The NEUBIE is admittedly expensive but incredible for rehab or for training. It now holds a hallowed place in my gym. You can contact NEUFit here and mention my name for $1000 off your purchase, or you can travel to Austin, Texas to have these guys work on injuries or re-train your muscles in their gym. Ask for Chaz or Garrett if you call these folks." Here are a few video demos of me using this very unique electrical muscle stimulation device: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ3rlCw5o50 https://www.facebook.com/BGFitness/videos/im-here-with-the-folks-at-neufit-neufitben-trying-out-this-high-intensity-leg-wo/10157149029659179/ Known as "The Health Engineer," my guest on today's show Garrett Salpeter has taken his training in Engineering and Neuroscience and used it to create NeuFit. By combining next-generation technology with protocols from physical therapy and functional neurology, NeuFit helps people tap into the power of their neurology. For most people, that leads to improved function and a quicker recovery from an injury/surgery or reaching fitness goals faster than they ever thought possible. For a few, this work has even meant being able to get out of a wheelchair and walk again. Now practitioners all over the country are adding the technology into their medical, physical therapy, and fitness practices, and Garrett is passionate about teaching NeuFit to them so that this work can impact as many lives as possible. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly is a "NEUBIE" and some history behind Garrett's business...7:50 A NEUBIE is a Neuro Bioelectric stimulator NEU Fit speaks to Garrett's conviction that if we upgrade our nervous systems, it has many positive consequences in our lives Why NHL. Player Duncan Keith Calls Himself a Biohacker -How the NEUBIE is different from other EMS devices...11:15 Direct current rather than alternating current Better for regeneration and healing in the body The Body Electric by Dr. Robert Becker Focused on sensory (afferent) rather than muscle contraction (efferent) "Russian Current" is a particular wave form based on tests conducted in the 1980's, in Russia Less motor output, more sensory input Neuro muscular reeducation Being able to move through the contraction expedites the healing process -Ben and Garrett's thoughts on suppressing Heart Rate Variability (HRV) during the stimulation, and the resultant high HRV after...24:00 You want to stress the body, then let it recover and super compensate SAID Principle: Specific Adaptation to an Imposed Demand You need real time feedback Suppressed HRV during most intense workout is ideal Auto regulating training based on the nervous system -A scanning procedure that allows you to figure out which muscles need the most work...28:40 -What a typical rehab program looks like, and what to expect in terms of sessions and results...32:08 Address the dysfunction, not the symptom Active treatments; not lying down Reincorporating the movement patterns Creating other feedback to the brain; reduces threat response Go higher on the current, sometimes in the same session -How to use the NEUBIE for a full body workout...35:00 You gain more recruitment with less external load and less strain on the joints Allows to train without pain, makes exercise safer Simple bodyweight movements: bands, joint movements Progress to heavier weights, kettle bells -Why you're so sore after using the NEUBIE; if and when you should use it while you're sore...38:08 Most often used by professionals, under professional supervision Body builders are pleased with the results after just a few sets vs. a long workout in the gym Not required to be sore to build strength Stimulate yourself into a depressed state; when recovered, do it again Typical schedule: 2x/week, sometimes multiple daily in extreme cases -How the device ca
