Ep 835The Road to Sparta: How Dean Karnazes Relived The Ancient Battle & Epic Run That Inspired The World's Greatest Footrace

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/roadtosparta In 490 BCE, some masochistic Greek guy named Pheidippides ran for 36 hours straight from Athens to Sparta to seek help in defending Athens from a Persian invasion in the Battle of Marathon. In doing so, he saved the development of Western civilization and inspired the birth of the marathon as we know it. Even now, some 2,500 years later, that run stands enduringly as one of greatest physical accomplishments in the history of mankind. Dean Karnazes, my guest on today's podcast, came up with the crazy idea of honoring Pheidippides (and Dean's own Greek heritage) by recreating this entire ancient journey in modern times. During his run, Karnazes even abstained from contemporary endurance nutrition like sports drinks and energy gels and only ate what was available in 490 BCE, such as figs, olives, cured meats and even some stuff called "mastic gum". Then he wrote about the whole experience is his new book "The Road to Sparta: Reliving the Ancient Battle and Epic Run That Inspired the World's Greatest Footrace". The new book is intriguing, comical, sometimes tear-jerking, and certainly thought-provoking and entertaining, and Dean is probably even more intriguing. Get a load of this guy... TIME magazine named Dean one of the “Top 100 Most Influential People in the World.” Men’s Fitness hailed him as one of the fittest men on the planet. Stan Lee called him, “Super Human.” He's an acclaimed endurance athlete and NY Times bestselling author, who has pushed his body and mind to inconceivable limits. Among his many accomplishments, he has run 350 continuous miles, foregoing sleep for three nights. He’s run across the Sahara Desert in 120-degree temperatures, and he’s run a marathon to the South Pole in negative 40 degrees. On ten different occasions he’s run a 200-mile relay race solo, racing alongside teams of twelve. He has swum the San Francisco Bay, scaled mountains, bike raced for 24-hours straight, and surfed the gigantic waves off the coast of Hawaii & California. His long list of competitive achievements include winning the world’s toughest footrace, the Badwater Ultramarathon, running 135 miles nonstop across Death Valley during the middle of summer. He has raced and competed on all seven continents of the planet, twice over. In 2006 he accomplished the seemingly impossible by running 50 marathons, in all 50 US states, in 50 consecutive days, finishing with the NYC Marathon, which he ran in three hours flat! In 2011 Dean ran 3,000-miles from the coast of California to New York City, averaging 40 to 50-miles per day (one day covering more than 70!). Along the way he stopped at schools to speak to students about the importance of exercise and healthy eating. When passing through Washington DC, he was invited to run through the White House to meet with First Lady Michelle Obama and be honored for his tireless commitment to helping this country get back in shape. Dean and his incredible adventures have been featured on The Today Show, 60 Minutes, The Late Show with David Letterman, CBS News, CNN, ESPN, The Howard Stern Show, NPR’s Morning Edition, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, the BBC, and many others. He has appeared on the cover of Runner’s World, Outside, and Wired magazine’s, and has been featured in TIME, Newsweek, People, GQ, The New York Times, USA TODAY, The Washington Post, Men’s Journal, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, and the London Telegraph, to mention a few. Dean is the winner of an ESPN ESPY and a 3-time recipient of Competitor magazines Endurance Athlete of the Year award. Dean has also raised millions of dollars for charity and was awarded the prestigious Community Leadership Award by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why it is a myth that Pheidippides ran 26.2 miles...[14:50] -How humans can actually outrun horses...[19:30] -Whether Dean ran barefoot or in leather sandals in the same way that Pheidippides did...[22:30] -The hardest part of Dean's entire run...[30:45] -How it went for Dean to eat for this race different than he ate for your other races, and why he chewed on something called "mastic gum"...[38:55] -How Dean ran for 70+ miles with no food...[41:15] -Why Dean adds rosemary to his coffee and consumes large amounts of wild salmon...[46:15] -How Dean recovers so darn fast between his events, and why he bulked up before his 50 marathons in 50 days...[51:00] -Why Dean splits his day into multiple 12-14 minute body weight workouts, and what his exact routine is...[53:00] -How Dean manages with such little sleep when running marathons over multiple days...[57:50] -Dean's take on all the talk about chronic cardio being bad for testosterone levels, increased risk of mortality, etc...[63:05] -And much more! Ep 833A Groundbreaking New Way To Combine Artificial Intelligence, Sound & Music To Boost Creativity, Focus, Sleep & More.

For the past couple months, I've been toying around with a new app and website called Brain.fm for everything from sleep to focus to creativity. Frankly, I have no clue how it works, but it can knock me out like a baby for sleep, especially for napping or when I wake up in the middle of the night, it puts me directly into "The Zone" when I'm writing fiction or reading, and when I play it on an airplane I doze off like a baby. I do know that it is far different than binaural beats and white noise, but know little else about the science behind Brain.fm, so for for today's episode, I managed to get the minds behind Brain.fm on the podcast to explain how you can use sound waves and artificial intelligence for sleep, focus, creativity and beyond. During today's podcast, I interview Junaid Kalmadi, the CEO Co-Founder of Brain.fm, along with Adam Hewett, the mastermind behind the sound innovation and technology, and during our discussion, you'll discover: Adam has been innovating with audio and brain stimulation for 14 years. Prior to brain.fm, Adam invented the first research focused entrainment software used by auditory neuroscientists and research labs around the world. Mind WorkStation (brain.fm’s predecessor) remains the gold standard for auditory stimulation and branches of neuroscience. He holds a patent on a method of his own invention for embedding brainwave stimulation into audio among others pending. Junaid specializes in transporting innovation breakthroughs made in R&D to a consumer product experience that's easy for any human to use. Since April 2014, Junaid lead the company to growing to 300k+ users, 3 to 13 people in team size, published 2 pilot studies from respected neuroscientists, and featured on Inc Magazine, Guardian, Newsweek, New York Observer, Futurism. Entrepreneur Magazine, Forbes, Vice, TechCrunch, Mashable, etc. Brain.fm also partnered with the team USA Olympic Wrestling team to help their insomnia & performance anxiety during preparation for the Rio Olympics in 2016. Their advisory board consists of leading auditory neuroscientists, notable serial entrepreneurs and angel investors. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly is BrainFM...[8:45] -How music can create neuronal oscillations in your brain...[13:00] -Why listening to Bach or Beethoven for long periods of time can actually distract and "stress" your brain...[19:00] -How the music and soundtracks used in brain.fm is different than binaural beats (and the unfortunate reality of binaural beats research)...[ 25:30] -The fascinating artificial intelligence software that Adam invented to use "note-bots" for creating music for sleep, focus and creativity...[32:10] -Whether any actual studies exist on the use of something like brain.fm to changing brain wave states...[44:15] -The best kind of headphones to use with brain.fm...[50:45] -And much more! Ep 832Drug Dealer: How Doctors Have Been Duped, Patients Are Hooked On Prescriptions & Why It’s So Hard to Stop.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/drugdealer Three out of four people addicted to heroin probably started on a prescription opioid, according to the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the United States alone, 16,000 people die each year as a result of prescription opioid overdose... ...but perhaps the most frightening aspect of the prescription drug epidemic is that it’s built on well-meaning doctors treating patients with real problems. In the new book "Drug Dealer, MD: How Doctors Were Duped, Patients Got Hooked, and Why It’s So Hard to Stop", my guest on this podcast Dr. Anna Lembke uncovers the unseen forces driving drug addiction nationwide. Combining case studies from her own practice with vital statistics drawn from public policy, cultural anthropology, and neuroscience, she explores the complex relationship between doctors and patients, the science of addiction, and the barriers to successfully addressing drug dependence and addiction. Chock full of extensive interviews with health care providers, pharmacists, social workers, hospital administrators, insurance company executives, journalists, economists, advocates, and patients and their families, this podcast and book is a must-listen for anyone whose life has been touched in some way by addiction to prescription drugs. Dr. Lembke singles out the real culprits behind the rise in drug addiction: cultural narratives that promote pills as quick fixes, pharmaceutical corporations in cahoots with organized medicin e, and a new medical bureaucracy focused on the bottom line that favors pills, procedures, and patient satisfaction over wellness. Dr. Lembke is Assistant Professor at the department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is the Program Director for the Stanford Addiction Medicine Fellowship and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic. She received her undergraduate degree in Humanities from Yale University and her medical degree from Stanford University. She completed a residency in Psychiatry, and a fellowship in mood disorders at the Stanford School of Medicine. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and a diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and commentaries, including in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, American Family Physician, and Addiction. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The shocking truth Anna discover when treating patients for substance abuse regarding where were most of them getting their actual drugs...[9:10] -What happens to a brain's reward circuitry over time when using something like a painkiller...[15:12] -How activities like hard exercise, cold, heat and even neurofeedback can be used to "reboot" the body's dopamine response...[24:10 & 26:35] -Why pain is good and why you shouldn't try to constantly shut it down...[25:15 & 29:00] -How people around the world are using something called "Pipemania" to get their hands on new drugs...[30:40] -Why we can't blame this all on big Pharma, and who is really responsible for the extreme surge of pill-taking in America and beyond...[43:30] -The 12 different strategies that drug seeking patients use to get drugs from their doctor...[56:30] -The growing problem of "pill mills"...[60:35] -What an RVU is and why it keeps a doctor highly motivated to do a "procedure" or "prescription"...[63:25] -Why something called "42CFR Part 2" keeps doctors from even knowing or having access to a patient's electronic medical record...[66:30] -How we can stop the cycle of compulsive prescribing...[70:20] -And much more... Ep 8291 Cheap & Easy Underground Training Method For Growth Hormone Release, 5 Biohacks to Increase Strength in 60 Seconds, 7 Exercises for the Eyes to Radically Enhance Stamina & Speed

This is a special Premium audio episode. Click here to activate a Premium subscription to the BenGreenfieldFitness show and access this and over 300 additional hidden audios, videos, pdf's and more! Last December, my friend Kusha Karvandi was at my house for an annual entrepreneurial mastermind I host. On the last day of the mastermind, he whisked me away into my basement gym and showed me how to strap on some special bands he had created called "BFR" bands. Kusha then led me through an extremely unique workout designed to enhance things like my neural function, lactic acid tolerance and growth hormone release - all while wearing tight bands that restricted blood flow to my arms and my legs. But Kusha isn't just a masochistic trainer who cuts off blood flow to your limbs and has you do barbell squats. He's also wicked smart. He has over 20 nationally-recognized certifications, and a unique specialty in neuroscience, giving him an ability to transform his clients unlike most coaches I've met in the fitness industry. During our fascination discussion, you'll discover: -Why you'd want to strap bands around your arms and legs, and how exactly blood flow restriction training works...[2:57] -What happens to your growth hormone and testosterone levels when you do occlusion training...[8:24] -Whether you have to do a specific number of sets and reps...[12:25 ] -How this is any different than Kaatsu training...[14:00] -The Vasper machine that combines ice, compression and high-intensity training...[20:10] -The weird cross-body band stuff Kusha did with me to warm me up prior to the workout...[26:30] -Kusha's top exercises for training the eyes and nervous system...[31:25] -Why Kusha likes Brainsway Deep TMS therapy, also known as Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation...[38:35] -How the special strobe goggles that Steph Curry wears actually work...[36:25] -Kusha's fast and free biohack to increase strength in 60 seconds...[41:20] -The top exercises and techniques for decreasing reaction time and increasing muscle firing speed...[45:00] -Since sleep has a lot to do with neural function, Kusha's top sleep hacks or sleep tips...[50:00] -And much more... Ep 828How To Rewire Your Brain For Better Sleep, Reset Your Brain's Tolerance To Marijuana & Alcohol, Fly Spaceships With Your Mind & Much More.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/andrewhill Six months ago, I visited the Peak Brain Institute in Los Angeles, California for a special type of advanced brain scan and brain mapping system called a quantified electroencephalography, or “QEEG”… …and I was shocked at what they discovered in my brain. Dr. Andrew Hill, who oversaw the test and who you may remember from my podcasts “Can Weed Really Shrink Your Brain” and “The Little Known Truth About Smart Drugs And Nootropics” (and who you also may have seen on The Joe Rogan Experience, the Smart Drug Smarts show and beyond) discovered some pretty severe patterns of excess stressful beta waves, excess theta waves, and excess delta waves in my brain. What's that mean? Basically, this suggests that I have had some history of concussions and traumatic brain injury (which I indeed have had, in everything from football to mountain biking to kickboxing), as well as built-up deficits of attention, increased distractibility, limited sleep potential and less-than-optimal cognitive performance from life, travel, toxins, head injuries and beyond. Dr. Hill actually explored much of this in a follow-up article he wrote after my scan, entitled "How To Increase Your IQ, Decrease Your Distractibility, Create Better Sleep, Enhance Cognitive Performance & Maximize Your Ability To Enter The Zone." After that initial scan, I hopped on a plane to LA, and went back to the Peak Brain Institute for three days of intensive training to fix my brain, and then I returned from LA with a tiny suitcase full of every piece of neurofeedback technology necessary to transform and rewire my brain. In today's episode with Dr. Andrew Hill, who is one the leading neurofeedback practitioners and peak brain performance coaches in the country, a UCLA trained cognitive neuroscientist, lecturer, entrepreneur, avid biohacker, and host of the soon-to-be released podcast – Head First With Dr. Hill (stay tuned as one of the first episodes is with yours truly)… ….you're going to discover exactly what happened to my brain over my 4 months of over 60 sessions of neurofeedback training, how this method of brain fixing blows any other form of electrical brain stimulation out of the water, and how I felt while going through what is essentially like “meditation on steroids”. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What Andrew discovered on my initial brain scan...[9:25] -How I was able to engage in neurofeedback while simultaneously watching Shark Tank...[14:10] -The difference between a "one channel" design and "two channel" design when it comes to how much you're asking of your brain...[25:50] -How you can be "doing other things", like typing, and still also at the same time doing neurofeedback and training your brain...[31:00] -One of Andrew's favorite "kitchen sink" neurofeedback protocols for sleeping like a baby, improving mood, and increasing focus...[33:00] -How to use neurofeedback to reset alcohol and marijuana tolerance with just one single session...[42:20] -The shocking results of the second scan that Andrew and I did...[50:15] -And much more! Ep 827How To Cure Yourself Of Cancer: An Epic Interview With A Man Who Defied Conventional Medicine & Cured Himself Of Prostate Cancer.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/questtocurecancer My guest on today's podcast, Eric Remensperger, has been a practicing attorney for over 30 years. He is a partner at a major law firm, Proskauer, where he heads up the West Coast real estate practice. But that’s not the most interesting part. Eric is also a major-league biohacker who has cured himself of cancer. I first met Eric at the PaleofX conference last May, and you may have seen his “daily shake” ingredients which appeared at the end of a blog I posted in July of last year entitled “6 Crazy, Exotic Superfood Cocktails, Shakes & Mind-Bending Recipes”... I ran into Eric again in December at the Runga event in Costa Rica, where he told me an incredible story about how his life had changed. In a nutshell, his decades long obsession with health and wellness hit the fastlane when he was diagnosed last spring with stage IV prostate cancer (with a Gleason score of 9), and as a result of that he did an incredibly deep dive into the science behind cancer and the various treatment protocols, some of which I’m sure we’ll get into on the podcast. For those of you who are concerned about cancer, or have been touched by it, I think you will find this a very interesting conversation. As a non-health-care professional who has gone from stage IV metastatic cancer to full remission, Eric can speak freely about his experiences and what he has learned (and continues to learn) about the theories on the causes of cancer and the premises behind the various treatment modalities. His goal is to assist those who wish to take charge of their own care by providing the information needed to better assist them in working with their doctors and healthcare professionals to find the best path to manage the disease by shifting from “cancering” to the body’s natural state of “healing”. Eric lives in Santa Monica, CA, where he is an advanced yogi and a health nut. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Eric went from a cigarette-smoking, divorced lawyer to a complete yogi enthusiast and health nut, far before he found out he had cancer...[10:22] -The one book that stood out from the 21 books Eric read in the 14 days after discovering he had cancer...[24:05] -How "Qi" stagnation and emotional issues can cause cancer...[28:50] -The fascinating experiments by Wilhelm Reich in which he discovered something called "bions" that can precede cancer...[42:00] -The way that quantum physics and vibrational energies can allow you to believe yourself into a state of sickness (and vice versa)...[49:20] -The importance difference between nutritional ketosis and therapeutic ketosis...[52:25] -What Eric discovered about deuterium depletion and it's link to cancer...[54:25] -The one pharmaceutical anti-fungal drug that Eric takes and recommends looking into for anyone who has cancer...[57:40] -Why Eric swears by a one-two combo of hyperbaric oxygen and ozone therapy via rectal insufflation for killing cancer cells...[59:05] -Why Eric completely shut down his testosterone levels and chemically castrated himself...[66:45] -The role of apricot pits and wormwood toxins for shutting down cancer cells...[71:10] -The Pau D' Arco tea blend that both Ben and Eric drink every day to support their mitochondria and cellular health...[74:00] -Why sunlight is crucial to producing something called "GcMAF", a crucial component of your immune system...[76:42] -And much more! Ep 826Why Millions Of People Are Paying To Suffer Through Ice, Fire, Electricity, Barbed Wire, Mud & More: Rise Of The Sufferfests Review.

Last year, after racing the AT&T Spartan Stadium race in San Francisco, I took my wife and twin boys to a private screening of one of the only movies I saw during the entire year last year (I'm not much of a Hollywood guy). Actually, this wasn't even a movie. It was a documentary, a genre that I really only tap into when my assistant sends me an audio download of some documentary somebody tells me I "must-see" and then I listen to it while I'm walking through the forest and imagine what is going on from a visual standpoint (as a film nerd, my guest on today's podcast would probably throttle me for this). Anyways, I walked out of the screening incredibly impressed. I laughed, I was inspired, I was on the edge of my seat, my kids were howling with laughter, and my wife loved it. So what did we see exactly? The documentary is called "Rise Of The Sufferfests". It's all about the global obstacle course phenomenon, and in a highly entertaining and funny way, it explores the history of the sport, the psychology behind it, the personalities that drive it, and asks what it says about the world we're living in. Here's the trailer: Director Scott Keneally is my guest on today's show. This self-proclaimed “beta male” has been stuck in the mud since the fall of 2011, when he tackled his first Tough Mudder. Back then, the first-time filmmaker had no idea he’d be making a movie about any of this stuff. He went into it with a simple plan: to suffer and write a story about the suffering. Keneally had previously confessed to things like bedwetting and sweaty pits in places like the New York Times Styles section, and figured the one about training up and tackling a paramilitary assault course would make for funny material. That essay was featured on the cover of his local alt-weekly, but more importantly, while researching the history of the company, he stumbled upon a “Social Network”-style scandal surrounding its origins. He quickly reinvented himself as an investigative journalist, and his story ultimately landed on the cover of Outside. The exposé received widespread media attention, opening doors to a consulting gig with 60 Minutes Sports, a speaking engagement at Stanford Business School and—by kismet or luck—an unlikely new career path as a filmmaker. When he’s not running in mud, Keneally works as a treatment writer for some of the top directors in music videos and commercials. Over the past 15 years, he has collaborated on videos for Rihanna, Madonna, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus, as well as Paris Hilton’s infamous burger commercial. He has also been known to play didgeridoo with the criminally under-discovered rock band OURS, through which he has toured with Marilyn Manson and recorded on the band’s Rick Rubin-produced record, “Mercy.” He received his B.A. from Boston College (’99) and his M.F.A. from University of San Francisco (’04). He lives on a vineyard in Sonoma County, CA, with his wife and little boy. Ep 8254 Ways To Eat Yourself Beautiful: Meat On The Bone, Fermented & Sprouted Foods, Organ Meats, Deep Nutrition & More With Dr. Cate Shanahan.

Two years ago, Cate Shanahan came onto the podcast as a guest for the episode "How To Use Food As Your Body’s Fat Loss Language". During that episode, we delved into into how the way your body interprets the food you eat in a manner that can make you either lean or fat – depending on your food choice. We also discussed Cate's book, which is one of the nutrition books that I find myself recommending most often, Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food. This month, Cate published a brand new, updated version of the book, and we take a deep dive into it on this podast. In writing this book, Cate examined diets around the world known to help people live longer, healthier lives―diets like the Mediterranean, Okinawa, and “Blue Zone”. She identified the four common nutritional habits, developed over millennia, that unfailingly produce strong, healthy, intelligent children, and active, vital elders, generation after generation. These four nutritional strategies―fresh food, fermented and sprouted foods, meat cooked on the bone, and organ meats―form the basis of what Dr. Cate calls “The Human Diet.” Cate is a board-certified family physician. She trained in biochemistry and genetics at Cornell University before attending Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. For ten years, she practiced medicine in Hawaii, where she studied ethnobotany and the culinary habits of her healthiest patients. She currently runs a metabolic health clinic in Denver, Colorado and serves as the Director of the Los Angeles Lakers PRO Nutrition Program. Not only do the LA Lakers follower her nutritional protocol (we discuss their snacks in today's show) but I just found out that the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA basketball team has been following a Deep Nutrition style diet for 3 years, Villanova won the college basketball championship in 2016 after adopting this diet the season prior. Do you think this might be good info to add to the show notes? Especially because the Lakers have been sucking, which can make a good diet look bad and sometimes draws ridiculous comments that don’t benefit anyone. Rooted in her experience as an elite athlete who used traditional foods to cure her own debilitating injuries, and combining her research with the latest discoveries in the field of epigenetics, Cate shows in this new book how all calories are not created equal; food is information that directs our cellular growth. Our family history does not determine our destiny: what you eat and how you live can alter your DNA in ways that affect your health and the health of your future children. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The shocking story of what happened when Cate and her husband visited the Culinary Institute of America...[8:50] -Why vegetable oil is your brain's worst enemy...[14:05] -The little-known toxin called 4HNE and the havoc it wreaks on your brain...[18:07] -Why cutting vegetable oil from the diet potentially just as good for the gut as a fecal transplant...[24:20] -What happened at a Filipino buffet in Kuaui that got Cate seriously thinking about dynamic symmetry...[30:55] -What nutrition has to do with beauty and symmetry (and the fascinating reason why should women space their children out if they want to have beautiful women)...[37:30] -Why men should take preparation for pregnancy just as seriously as women...[45:15] -What the world's elite and rich people eat, and why that leads them to higher amounts of beauty and success...[51:10] -Why the total amount of LDL you possess can be practically irrelevant...[53:50] -Why Cate says that calories don't always count...[59:25] -How fat cells really become something other than fat cells...[66:00] -The dietary habits of the LA Lakers that allow them to follow these same principles...[70:50] -Five easy ways to get started with Deep Nutrition concepts...[74:35] -And much more! Ep 824A Cool, New Way To Scan, Interpret & Fix The Human Body's Electrical Field.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/bodyscan Last week, I placed my right hand on a fancy scanner that arrived in the mail and did what is called a mapping of my body's "energy field". I then plugged the scanner into my computer and uploaded the results to my friend Wendy Myers, who is a functional diagnostic nutritionist (FDN), a certified holistic health coach (CHHC), and the founder of Liveto110. Wendy attended the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York and has a degree in Entrepreneurship from the University of Southern California. Wendy is certified in Hair Mineral Analysis for the purpose of designing programs for clients to correct their metabolism and body chemistry with customized targeted nutrient therapy and a previous podcast guest on the episodes: "Why My Barber Thinks I’m A Freak (& Crazy Health Discoveries You Can Get From Your Hair, Your Urine & Your Stool)." and "Everything You Need To Know About Hair Mineral Analysis." Anyways, this scanner, called an "NES Scanner" is designed to read electrical signals produced by the body. The skin is an indicator of what’s going on underneath it, plus it has a magnetic quality to it. So wherever there is a blockage in the energy flow or some other problem, the skin in that area becomes more magnetic or sticky, which is detected by the scanner. Then as you stimulate that particular area with specific therapies like pulsed electromagnetic fields (using another device called the miHealth), the body’s magnetic quality will begin to change, indicating to the device when the body has responded and created its healing reaction. Another way of looking at this is that cells have an electrical potential. Sick, tired and malfunctioning cells have a low electrical potential and this is what surfaces as magnetic or sticky quality on the skin. By putting energy back into the specific area at issue, this system can apparently then raise the electrical potential of those cells, restoring them over time to their normal, optimal functioning. This also stimulates the nervous system, sending a signal to the brain to direct resources to that particular part of the body as part of the natural healing response. The scan that I did reads the electrical information of the body and then uses the information to make a map of the human body's electrical field. The entire scan is completed in a few seconds. Once the scan is completed, the software returns a graphical representation of any located distortions in the body’s information, as well as recommendations for therapy that then stimulate the body’s healing response and correct the noted distortions. During our discussion, Wendy and I go over my scan results and you'll discover: -The science behind scanning the human body and how the NES scanner actual works...[7:30] -Whether any research actually exists when it comes to scanning and adjusting your body's electrical field...[9:30] -How you can "biohack" your body in the same way that an acupuncturist would, without needles and acupuncture...[19:55] -The shocking effects of airline travel on the body's electrical energy fields (and a simple way to fix the effects)...[22:45] -How you can "imprint" water with specific frequencies, and the new science of something called infoceuticals...[24:10] -How a small, portable handheld pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) device can be used to adjust the body's meridians...[29:25] -An easy DIY technique you can use to banish constipation and large intestine issues...[44:50] -And much more! Ep 822How To Fix Your Brain And Biology With Plants: An Interview With Neurodietetics Author Richard Aiken On The Best Diet For The Brain.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/braindiet A couple years ago, I released a podcast episode with Dr. Richard Aiken entitled “How Blenders Can Destroy Food, Why I Eat 20-25 Servings Of Vegetables Each Day, The Vegan-Paleo Debate & Much More“. During the show, Dr. Aiken explained the potentially damaging effects of high-speed blending on food and referenced a recent experiment he performed on bananas. Later, Dr. Aiken was kind enough to send me the complete results of that experiment, published in their full, scientifically nerdy details at "How To Biohack Your Green Smoothie (And Can High Speed Blenders Really Damage Your Food?)". Now, after publishing his new book "Neurodietetics: The dietary science of human flourishing", Dr. Aiken is back. Dr. Aiken, MD, PhD, is a chemical engineer and physician, and studies how diet has a profound influence on our minds and how, using food, we can relieve suffering and possibly help reverse pathology. He highlights in the book how - even if we don't have clinical signs or symptoms of physical, cognitive or emotional decline - we can achieve a profound state of mind-body wellness, eudaimonia – human flourishing with proper lifestyle choices. This book is about the science of mind flourishing through dietary choices that Aiken calls “neurodietetics”. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly is Xenohormesis when it comes to consuming plants...[9:30] -Why you should eat cucumbers that have been exposed to high amounts of heat, grapes grown in poor soil and water deprived turmeric...[19:00] -The "Cinderella drug" you can find in plants that barely anybody knows about...[23:05] -The hibiscus and green tea workout drink that Dr. Aiken considers to be a physical and mental performance game-changer...[38:00] -The two crucial ingredients to add to a blender to "biohack" your smoothie and concentrate the antioxidants...[40:20] -The single seed that Dr. Aiken recommends most highly for mental performance...[50:30] -Why Ben threw out a 60 dollar bottle of liquid fish oil...[58:30] -How to "rescue" any smoothie from tasting bad (even when you add the potent one-two combo of turmeric and black pepper)...[62:35] -The brand new sleep hack Dr. Aiken has been experimenting with very successfully...[70:30] -And much more! Ep 821The Thyroid Connection: Why You Feel Tired, Brain-Fogged, and Overweight (& How to Get Your Life Back).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/thyroidconnection Are you exhausted all the time, plagued by brain fog, and unable to lose weight? Do you struggle with insomnia, panic attacks, and tremors? But does your doctor insists your labs are normal, and that you just need to eat less and exercise more? As anyone who has been there knows, nothing is more frustrating, stressful, and emotionally draining than feeling unwell and being told you're fine by the very person who is supposed to heal you. The truth is, your symptoms could be caused by a thyroid disorder - the hidden cause of a wide array of health problems that can threaten to ruin your life. Thyroid dysfunction affects at least 20 million Americans and yet conventional medicine frequently misses the diagnosis. The scariest part? Most doctors won't even order thyroid tests unless you specifically ask. Now, in her new book The Thyroid Connection, Dr. Amy Myers, my guest on today's podcast, teaches you how to take your health into your own hands. Dr. Myers, originally misdiagnosed herself, understands the struggles of thyroid dysfunction firsthand. Fortunately, she also knows how achievable recovery and well-being are, and just how to get you there. In The Thyroid Connection, Amy explains how to recognize the symptoms that could signal a thyroid problem, work with your doctor to ensure proper diagnosis, and make sure you're on the right treatment plan. Amy is a renowned leader in Functional Medicine a 2x New York Times Bestselling author of The Autoimmune Solution and The Thyroid Connection and the founder and medical director of Austin UltraHealth, a functional medicine clinic that treats patients from all over the world who are overcoming chronic illness. She has been featured on The Dr. Oz Show, The New York Post, Women’s Health, Huffington Post, and numerous other television programs, radio shows, and print publications. She has helped hundreds of thousands recover from chronic illness through her dietary-based program, The Myers Way®, and she has created multiple programs, tools, and free resources to guide readers through her revolutionary approach to health. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How your body converts T4 into T3 and how you can enhance that enzymatic process...[11:45] -Why cortisol is surprisingly vital to healthy thyroid function, especially for shoving T3 into cells...[14:55] -What makes the body produce more Reverse T3...[19:55] -What blood work besides a full thyroid panel is crucial to look at optimal thyroid function...[28:30] -Why most labs don't test for red blood cell levels of things like selenium, zinc and magnesium, and why this is such a big problem...[29:30] -The details behind the "iodine controversy" and where you should be getting your iodine...[30:27] -Dr. Myer's opinion on the use of low-dose naltrexone (and something you'd never want to combine it with)...[40:20] -Why your genetic "SNP's" are such an important part of detoxification and thyroid health...[48:00] -What does a "typical day" look like for someone using the Myers Way? Ep 820Kava Extract, Quantum Physics, Filtered Water, Mushroom Coffee & More: A Special Weekend Podcast Episode!

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/caljam2017 In this special podcast, recorded from the "CalJam" event I recently attended, I join forces with Dr. Dan Pompa and Warren Phillips to geek out on mushroom coffee, kava extract, quantum physics, filtered water, biodynamic wine and beyond, including a very special conference in Atlanta from May 5-7, 2017, where Dr. Pompa, Dr. Joseph Mercola and I will be speaking! Dr. Pompa, D.PSc., is a global leader in the health and wellness industry, traveling across the country educating practitioners and the public on the root causes of inflammation driven diseases such as Weight Loss Resistance, Hypothyroid, Diabetes, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autoimmune Disorders and other chronic conditions. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Pittsburgh and his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Life University, graduating second in his class. His authority today, however, is rooted in his own personal battle, having overcome serious neurotoxic illness and heavy metal poisoning using the cellular detoxification strategies learned in his journey back to health. Warren Phillips is the CEO and Co-founder of Health Centers of the Future. As a credentialed geologist, his background in environmental studies led him to understand the impact synthetic chemicals and environmental toxins have upon the human condition. A career shift landed him a position as VP of Sales and Marketing for a prestigious supplement manufacturer, but after a short run of success, Warren felt limited and knew he had to grow further. In order to have greater impact upon those in need, he pursued partnering with independent Health Care Practitioners to empower people, to protect them from being compromised by environmental factors the mainstream medical field didn’t yet understand. Because of the deep pockets and marketing power of the conventional medical marketplace, Warren fast learned his best resource for sharing vital information was the internet, and with a determination to “get the message out” he became an expert and renowned 21st century marketer for the medical field. His simple solutions to outperforming old, tired health-based marketing has landed the doctors Warren’s worked with on Page 1 of Google driving streams of new patients in search of answers. In founding Health Centers of the Future with Dr. Dan Pompa, Warren availed his extensive marketing know-how to committed practitioners committed to making a difference in a field where true health restoration is rare. He’s found unprecedented inroads into reaching people with serious conditions including thyroid illness, weight loss resistance, diabetes, and the diseases we’ve mistakenly come to associate with aging. Warren also owns and operates Revelation Health, a company with a commitment to helping people cut through the nutritional confusion and find real answers to their health needs. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, Warren lives with his wife and two daughters living the lifestyle and walking the talk. Ep 819A Little-Known, Highly-Effective Hack To Heal Your Spine, Get Massive Mobility Improvements & Change The Way You Move Forever.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/ELDOA Four months ago, a guy knocked on my front door. He'd flown all the way up from Alabama to my house to train me in a new method of movement and deep fascial stretching that I had never before encountered…something called the "ELDOA Method". Now don't get me wrong: I've done my fair share of mobility training. For example, in the article "The 5 Essential Elements of A Training Program That Most Athletes Neglect – Part 3: Mobility", I delve into how, on a weekly basis, I engage in everything from active stretching to yoga to foam rolling to traction to deep tissue massage and beyond. But Jacob Schoen, the guy who showed up at my house (and my guest on today's podcast) and trained me for eight solid hours over the course of a weekend, introduced me to this new form of extremely intensive "stretching", and helped me discover something I now take breaks from work to do each day and one of the best ways to eliminate low back pain, heal the spine, and get a full body myofascial stretch. It looks like this: Jacob Schoen is the owner and founder of SHIFT Sport and Wellness in New Orleans, La. Jacob is currently studying in the programs of a guy named Dr. Guy Voyer and is using this education to change the way people approach and associate with their pain or performance. By focusing on the purpose, precision, and quality of exercise Jacob inspires people to “move more aware” in the gym and in life. He hopes that by creating awareness in the individual through movement that he can create momentum towards a more connected and conscious culture of health. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Jacob discovered ELDOA after a series of injuries and poor movement patterns developed from cycling and triathlon...[9:47] -Why ELDOA is like using an inversion table on your whole body...[15:15] -What it means to create space within your joint s (and why joints aren't "stacked" the way you would think they are)...[18:30] -On a physiological level, what does ELDOA do, exactly? [22:45] -Why most stretching practices or techniques don't actually target your myofascia, and how ELDOA does...[25:30] -How stretching your wrist and big toe at the same time can, surprisingly, decompress your actual spine...[29:20] -What a sample ELDOA session actually looks like...[31:45] -What it means to "normalize" your muscle tone...[41:12] -What you probably don't know about the bones in the skull and why your jaw and skull bones are so important for decompressing your spine...[45:19] -How to self-adjust your jaw with a dowel...[50:15] -Why Jake is not a fan of foam rolling and deep tissue work and why Ben is...[54:15] -The #1 completely natural supplement you can take that is almost free and that vastly decreases back pain...[69:20] -How often you should do ELDOA...[72:45] -The best way for you to learn how to do ELDOA yourself...[77:00] -And much more! Ep 817Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, the Navy SEALs, and Maverick Scientists Are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/stealingfire Steven Kotler is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist and the cofounder/director of research for the Flow Genome Project. He first appeared on this podcast in the episode, "Decoding The Science of Ultimate Human Performance", in which he talked about his book "The Rise Of Superman – Decoding The Science of Ultimate Human Performance" and explained exactly how to biohack yourself into this state of flow, and how you can tap into this power to achieve amazing feats of physical and mental performance, even if you’re not a “super athlete”. Then, in our second podcast, "Why The Future Of Health Is Better Than You Think", we delved into Steven's book "Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think" Steven presented the contrarian view that exponentially growing technologies and other powerful forces are conspiring to better the lives of billions on our planet, that the gap between the privileged few and hardscrabble majority is closing fast, and that this is drastically affecting human access to everything from water to food, energy, healthcare, education, and freedom. In today's episode, Steven is back to to present the fascinating topics in his new book "Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, the Navy SEALs, and Maverick Scientists Are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work". Stealing Fire reveals the biggest revolution you’ve never heard of, and it’s hiding in plain sight. Over the past decade, Silicon Valley executives like Eric Schmidt and Elon Musk, Special Operators like the Navy SEALs and the Green Berets, and maverick scientists like Sasha Shulgin and Amy Cuddy have turned everything we thought we knew about high performance upside down. Instead of grit, better habits, or 10,000 hours, these trailblazers have found a surprising short cut. They're harnessing rare and controversial states of consciousness to solve critical challenges and outperform the competition. Steven Kotler, along with high performance expert Jamie Wheal (Executive Director of Flow Genome Project and a leading expert on the neuro-physiology of human performance), spent four years investigating the leading edges of this revolution: from the home of SEAL Team Six to the Googleplex, the Burning Man festival, Richard Branson’s Necker Island, Red Bull’s training center, Nike’s innovation team, and the United Nations’ Headquarters. And what they learned was stunning: In their own ways, with differing languages, techniques, and applications, every one of these groups has been quietly seeking the same thing: the boost in information and inspiration that altered states provide. Today, this revolution is spreading to the mainstream, fueling a trillion dollar underground economy and forcing us to rethink how we can all lead richer, more productive, more satisfying lives. Driven by four accelerating forces - psychology, neurobiology, technology and pharmacology - we are gaining access to and insights about some of the most contested and misunderstood terrain in history. Stealing Fire is a provocative examination of what’s actually possible; a guidebook for anyone who wants to radically upgrade their life. During the podcast discussion on this episode with Steven and Jamie, you'll discover: -What ecstasis is, and what does it have to do with the SEALs...[7:30] -The ancient, psychedelic, little-known substance called kykeon, and what it has to do with group flow...[11:28] -How the SEALs cut the time it takes to learn a foreign language form six months to six weeks...[18:20] -How meditation practitioners achieve in months what used to take years...[19:05] -Why it is important to be able to shut down your prefontal cortex...[24:30] -The surprising host of actual, measurable chemicals associated with flow state...[27:40] -Why Google is so interested in hiring people who attend Burning Man...[32:45] -For people interested in going to Burning Man, why do you think they should go and what can they expect...[34:35] -How LSD helps people to solve technology problems...[42:40] -How taking mushrooms before church could make church or other religious experiences more meaningful...[47:15] -What you need to know about "The God Helmet"...[50:45] -The big, big problem with Botox...[57:20] -The fascinating tale of how animals use psychedelics to enhance lateral thinking...[61:50] -How entire groups of people in a single room can synchronize their heart rates and brain waves...[65:05] -The shocking impact of music on brainwaves and neurochemicals...[67:50] -A few very important rules to follow if you decide to use psychedelics...[71:25] -And much more... Ep 816Cupping, Urine Drinking, Dream Interpretation, Open Heart Surgery Using Acupuncture As Anesthesia & Much More.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/chinesemedicine My guest on today's podcast, Dr. Michael Smith, hails from the First Nations in Canada, grew up on the diet of his indigenous ancestors eating wild organ meats from the animals he hunted and feasting from the wild salmon that he caught. He learned many of the medicine traditions and the "Medicine Wheel" of the First Nations people. He studied Martial Arts and taught Canadian Military self defense techniques, and along the way, his Martial Arts teacher took him aside to say to tell him that he was "more of a healer than a fighter". His teacher then began to teach him the Oral Tradition of Classical Oriental Science, or better known as Traditional Chinese Medicine. Michael is now a huge pillar in the healing community of Nelson, BC. For example, restaurants in the Nelson area will produce a special menu at certain times of year when he holds the event of cleansing season. He's helped with bringing Medical Cannabis dispensaries to the city and produces supplements paired with Cannabis Medicine sold there. You often see him ushering in folks at open public sweat lodge ceremonies with burning of sage. Michael is an author, speaker, professional martial artist, teacher and clinician, and a respected integrative medicine pioneer with over 20 years experience. In his Nelson, British Columbia practice he combines functional medicine and evolutionary nutrition with the ancient wisdom and vast experience of Traditional Chinese medicine. His primary focus in medicine is complex chronic auto-immune diseases (as a patient, Michael had lived with both Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis for well over 20 years). He is a co-founder of the prestigious Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences, the first five year full time doctorate level training program in TCM in Canada. He is also the primary developer of Neuro-Somatic Therapy, a hands on approach to reducing the way people embody distress, illness and trauma. As a Martial Artist, Michael has been training for almost 40 years. He has had the good fortune to train with some of the highest level teachers in the Western world, including a teacher of the late Bruce Lee. After training prison guards, police officers and members of both military and paramilitary organizations, Michael decided to leave traditional martial arts and develop his own approach to resolving physical violence. He has taught this approach, called Applied Combatives, for over 20 years. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The fascinating ancestral health, Dr. Smith learned while growing up in a hunting lodge with the "Mud Clan" First Nations...[9:55] -How Michael got Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis that lasted for well over 20 years, and how he fixed himself...[14:40] -What your body is telling you if you can see vegetables in your poop...[18:00] -Michael's mouthwatering "ancestral" recipe for salmon rillette roulade...[21:30] -Why Michael believes you should drink one liter of water within the first two hours upon waking...[25:45] -The fascinating concept of gently "blowing" on your water before you drink it...[29:45] -How Michael developed something called "neurosomatic therapy", and why some people go into a fit of rage after having it done...[42:40] -How Michael implements blood letting, needling and cupping in his practice...[48:50] -The shocking way that acupuncture has been used during open heart surgery for anesthesia...[56:05] -Michael's thoughts on dream interpretation (e.g. associating teeth falling out in dreams as deficiency of Kidney Qi)...[59:15] -Whether drinking your own urine is really a component of Chinese medicine...[67:20] -How pulse diagnosis and tongue diagnosis work? Ep 815How Modern Lighting Can Destroy Your Sleep, Your Eyes & Your Health (& What You Can Do About It).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/lighthealth Light can have a significant impact on your sleep and your health. In today's podcast, you're going to discover the hidden dangers of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting that most people are completely unaware of, including the risk of cataracts, blindness, age-related macular degeneration, mitochondrial dysfunction, metabolic disorders, disrupted circadian biology and sleep, cancer and more. LED light is currently used in applications as diverse as aviation lighting, automotive headlamps, advertising, general lighting, traffic signals, camera flashes, and lighted wallpaper. Large-area LED displays are used as stadium displays, dynamic decorative displays, and dynamic message signs on freeways. Thin, lightweight message displays are used at airports and railway stations, and as destination displays for trains, buses, trams, and ferries. LED's are also used in traffic lights and signals, exit signs, emergency vehicle lighting, ships' navigation lights, aircraft cockpits, brake lights, submarine and ship bridges, astronomy observatories, night vision, glowsticks and more. My guest is Dr. Alexander Wunsch, who is a physician, researcher and lecturer in light medicine and photobiology with particular interest in light effects and beneficial or adverse health impacts of solar radiation and artificial light sources on endocrine and cellular levels in humans. He conducts studies on photobiological effects of optical (UV, VIS and IR) radiation. In his private medical practice in Heidelberg, he uses therapeutic light spectra in combination with other biophysically based treatments and develops light equipment for medical and cosmetic purposes. He is associate lecturer at the Wismar University of Applied Sciences and mentors students in their master theses in light and health-associated topics. Alexander Wunsch presents at international conferences and operates as a consultant for federal authorities, media and industry. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why LED light is so much different than other forms of light, especially with regards to how it affects your biology...[7:10] -The biggest sources of LED in your personal environment...[16:22] -Why monitor and light bulb flickering is such a serious issue when it comes to your health...[19:35] -How LED's (especially when used after sunset) vastly reduces the regenerative and restoring capacities of your eyes...[23:35] -Why near infrared, which is missing from LED light, is so important for you to be exposed to...[38:45] -What the healthiest type of lighting is to use and what should you look for when choosing a light...[53:00] -The two parameters you must look for in a light bulb, and what numbers those parameters should be at...[54:20 & 56:20] -Top recommendations for computer screens that don't damage your eyes...[70:15] -And much more! Addendum I have received multiple questions about the "Joovv" light that I use daily for testosterone enhancement (read more here or watch this video) - specifically whether the LED lights in the Joovv are harmful. Here is my take on that: The guy who makes the Joovv (Scott Nelson) is a friend of mine. Before starting Joovv, he spent close to 15 years in the medical device industry (with companies like Medtronic, Covidien, Boston Scientific, etc) and worked closely with world-renowned physicians, primarily the "who's who" in the fields of interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and cardiovascular surgery. I do know he's studied the field of photomedicine quite a bit and have learned the following in conversations with him: -There are hundreds of published studies that point to the benefits of LLLT at specific wavelengths (both red and IR). There is a robust amount of clinical evidence that supports both red light (in the mid 600nm range) as well as IR. That's why Joovv offers the ability to add red, IR, or a combination of red/IR to their devices. So I don't *think* it's just "simple red light". -I asked them why LED's are used in Joovv, and they replied that you get 10x the efficiency without the heat loss, and included a graph that compares the WARP 10 device (LED-based red light) to a 250-watt heat lamp. Ep 814Six-Egg Breakfasts, Ketosis For Bodybuilders, Resetting Weed Tolerance, Kratom Experimentation & Much More With The Mindpump Guys!

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/mindpump3 Meet the guys from MindPump podcast. For the second time, the hosts Sal, Adam, Justin and Doug traveled all the way up from San Jose to descend upon my my house in Spokane, Washington to record this podcast. Our previous episodes include: -The Mysterious Micro-Workouts, Turning On Your Butt, Overdosing With Melatonin & More With The MindPump Guys. -The Kuwait Muscle-Building Phenomenon, The Too-Much-Protein Myth, Anabolic Triggering Sessions & More With The MindPump Podcast Crew. These guys claim to “pull back the curtain on the mythology, snake oil and pseudo-science that pervades the fitness industry and present science-backed solutions that result in increased muscular development and performance while simultaneously emphasizing health.” And as you can see below, they seem to have the body composition and transformation equation pretty well figured out. They include: Sal DiStefano… Sal was 14 years old when he touched his first weight and from that moment he was hooked. Growing up asthmatic, frequently sick and painfully skinny, Sal saw weightlifting as a way to change his body and his self-image. In the beginning, Sal’s body responded quickly to his training but then his gains slowed and then stopped altogether. Not one to give up easily, he began reading every muscle building publication he could get his hands on to find ways to bust through his plateau. He read Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, Mentzer’s Heavy Duty, Kubrick’s Dinosaur Training, and every muscle magazine he could find; Weider’s Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Iron Man and even Muscle Media 2000. Each time he read about a new technique or methodology he would test it out in the gym. At age 18 his passion for the art and science of resistance training was so consuming that he decided to make it his profession and become a personal trainer. By 19 he was managing health clubs and by 22 he owned his own gym. After 17 years as a personal trainer he has dedicated himself to bringing science and TRUTH to the fitness industry. Adam Schafer… Adam Schafer is a IFBB men's physique Pro and fitness expert. Adam made his entrance into the fitness world 14 years ago and has continued to send shock waves throughout the community ever since. He is a man of many talents who wears many hats. He is first and foremost a certified fitness expert who has an insatiable desire to help people in need of major lifestyle changes and daily accountable motivation. He is also incredibly driven entrepreneur and business minded individual with a vision that continually challenges his colleagues and peers to think bigger and achieve more. Justin Andrews… Justin has an incredible passion to disrupt the personal training industry and create ground breaking programs and tools that fitness professionals and clients alike can benefit from. The fitness industry in general needs a massive face lift to speak more to the generation growing up with a more advanced technology tool kit. Justin’s approach is to create programs that utilize technology as it advances and cut through the millions of options people face everyday when seeking specific information relating to their fitness needs. The great thing about where we are today is how easy it is to access information, the bad part about accessing all this information is how much misinformation is out there to weed through. As a health and fitness professional with a proven track record here in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Justin Andrews will keep working tirelessly to keep people educated and connected to quality personal trainers long into the future. Doug Egge… Doug received his first gym membership as a gift from his dad when he was 16 years old. Rocky III had just come out and he was determined to build a body like Stallone. It never happened. Despite following the advice of muscle magazines and busting his butt in the gym, Doug saw minimal gains over the next 30 years. Then he was introduced to Sal Di Stefano by his chiropractor who recommended he work with Sal to eliminate muscle imbalances that were causing lower back issues. Sal's unique approach, often 180 degrees different from what Doug had read in books and magazines, produced more results in a matter of months than he had experienced in the 30 years prior. Doug with an extensive marketing and media production background, recognized Sal's unique gift and perspective was missing from the fitness world and suggested that they should join forces. Doug and Sal have since produced life-altering programs such as the No BS 6-Pack Formula and MAPS Anabolic. Doug is very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Adam and Justin as Producer of MindPump. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The craziest biohacks in Ben's office...[5:35] -Why Adam has six eggs for breakfast, along with tons of avocados and bacon, and how his body responded to that when he switched to it from a "high carb" bodybuilding diet...[17:40] -What Adam

Ep 813Decoding The Mysteries Of Neuroinflammation, Immune Dysregulation, Toxicity, Infection & Beyond.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/mercury Recently, Dr. Joseph Mercola, who I interviewed in the episode "Killing Fat Cells, Fixing Mitochondria, Growing Superfoods & More", wrote to me and told me about some guy named Dr. Christopher Shade, who Dr. Mercola mentioned was one of the more brilliant minds out there when it comes to neuroinflammation, toxicity, metals such as mercury, and unique delivery mechanisms for getting nutrients into your body, including something called "liposomal delivery". So I reached out to Dr. Shade and he graciously agreed to come onto the show. Who is this guy? Dr. Shade obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees from Lehigh University in environmental and aqueous chemistry. Dr. Shade earned a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois where he studied the environmental and analytical chemistries of mercury as well as advanced aquatic chemistry. During his Ph.D. work, Dr. Shade patented analytical technology for mercury speciation analysis and later founded a company called "Quicksilver Scientific" that now commercializes this technology. Shortly after starting Quicksilver Scientific, Dr. Shade turned his focus to the human aspects of mercury exposure, toxicity and the human detoxification system. He has since developed specific clinical analytical techniques for measuring mercury exposure and a system of products to remove metallic and organic toxins by upregulation of innate detoxification biochemistry. His current focus is at the intersection of neuroinflammatory issues, immune dysregulation, toxicity, and infection - specifically how to peel away the layers of overlapping dysfunction in the sick individual until you get to a point at which the system rights itself. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Chris decided not to be an organic farmer and instead began studying mercury and the human detox system...[6:40] -Aside from liver, kidneys, skin, the other three detox mechanisms and organs in the body that get underplayed...[12:00] -The unique clinical analytical techniques Chris developed, and why he uses something called "mercury speciation"...[23:00 & 29:30] -Why most tests for mercury give a "false negative"...[30:00] -The best ways to get rid of mercury in the body...[32:30] -How to make your own liposomal delivery mechanism at home...[44:35] -How Chris gets a sick individual to "right themselves"...[50:00] -A simple trick to make compounds like THC and CBD more absorbable...[63:45] -And much more! Ep 812How To Learn Faster, Jump Higher, Increase Explosiveness, Push Harder & Biohack Your Brain Beyond It’s Normal Capacity.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/halosport Last week, I posted to Instagram the "most dangerous piece of workout equipment I own". Just posted the most dangerous piece of workout equipment that I own to Snapchat - go check it out. Snapchat name: @bgfitness #dangerous #instagood #amazing #me #crazy #fun #cool #danger #deadly #thriller #awesome #invincible #insane #this #workout #fitness #gym #motivation #fit #bodybuilding #training #fitspo #health #fitfam #lifestyle #exercise #cardio A photo posted by Ben Greenfield (@bengreenfieldfitness) on Dec 30, 2016 at 9:28pm PST And no, it was not a mace, or a unicycle, or a parachute or any other risky exercise device. Instead, it was a simple piece of headgear that looks like a nice set of earphones. But within that headgear is embedded one of the devices known to modern exercise science when it comes to doing things like making a hard, voluminous workout feel shockingly simple and short, allowing you to acquire skills like a tennis serve or golf swing at double or triple the speed you'd normally be able to, and enabling you to push much, much harder during a workout than you'd ever be able to do without a little bit of help from modern brain biohacking. The device is called a Halo, and I call it "dangerous" because it allows me to push my body and brain to levels I'd never be able to reach on my own. And it's all based on the science of something called "neuropriming". Developed from fifteen years of academic research, neuropriming is basically the process of causing excitability of motor neurons before or during athletic and exercise training to things like improve strength, skill, explosiveness, and endurance. Michael Johnson, 4x Olympic Gold Medalist says that "...it's doing something that we've never seen before – something the sports market's never seen before..." We're talking explosive force development, increased propulsive force, enhanced skill acquisition, increased rate of force development, and host of other factors influenced by the ability of neuropriming to put the brain's motor cortex in a temporary state of hyper-learning that lasts for about an hour. During this post neuropriming time, feeding your brain quality athletic training repetitions results in this information being more fully incorporated into your brain. Essentially, the headgear I've been using allows me to push far harder than my brain would normally let me and makes practice of a skill far more productive and efficient for the brain. Normally, athletes require literally thousands of reps to create the neurologic changes necessary to perform at the highest level come game time. But this technology changes all that. It's called a "Halo". Dr. Daniel Chao, my guest on today's podcast, is a neurotech entrepreneur who specializes in devices that improve brain performance. He is the co-founder and CEO of Halo Neuroscience. The company's first product, Halo Sport, is the first neurostimulation system built specifically for athletes. Before Halo, Dr. Chao was the head of business development at NeuroPace where he played a central role in the development of the world's first responsive neurostimulation system that was approved by the FDA for the treatment of epilepsy in a unanimous 13-0 vote. Prior to Neuropace, Dr. Chao was a consultant at McKinsey & Company and earned his M.D. and M.S. in neuroscience from Stanford University. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The special part of the brain mammals possess that other less complex species do not, and how you can target that specific area of the brain...[10:40] -How something called transcranial direct current stimulation, also known as tDCS, can be used to stimulate certain section of your brain...[12:52] -What kind of studies have been done on "neuropriming" to actually show whether or not it actually works...[15:10] -Why workouts and skill acquisition actually feel easier after you "shock your brain"...[18:00] -When shocking your brain can actually be safe, and when you should avoid it like the plague...[21:45] -Whether something like this can be used general cognitive performance such as language learning or focus...[27:30 & 30:00] -How to use tDCS stimulation for video gaming and playing instruments...[32:25] -The super-charged sniper training RadioLab episode on which Ben first discovered tDCS and how the Halo is any different than the 20 dollar "make your own TDCS" threads on Reddit...[39:05] -The pro athletes currently using the Halo and what they have reported for results...[45:25] -Whether or not this type of brain training is considered neurodoping by the World Anti Doping Association...[53:20] -What happens if you wear headgear is too far forward or too far back...[59:50] -And much more... Ep 811The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet (& What They Don't Tell You About The Mediterranean Diet).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/bigfatsurprise OK, OK. Let's not beat around the bush here. In health circles, it's kind of old news now that "saturated fat might not be bad for you" and that sugar, starches and vegetable oil might instead be a primary contributory factor to heart disease and other chronic health problems. So when I got the book "The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet" in the mail, I figured it would be the same ol', same ol' advice, like eat your egg yolks, don't be afraid of butter, and drink whole milk instead of skim milk. But I was actually surprised. Big, fat surprised. Heh. Why? Because in the book, author and investigative journalist Nina Teicholz not only lays out the most comprehensive history, treatise and full argument as to why saturated fats - the kind found in dairy, meat, and eggs - are not bad for health, but also takes a deep dive into everything from myths behind the Mediterranean Diet, to the heart killing replacement for trans fats you probably haven't heard about yet to the ethics of eating meat and beyond. The Economist named this book the best science book of 2014 and called it a “nutrition thriller”. The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Mother Jones, Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews named it a *Best Book* of 2014. The British Medical Journal praised the book in an extensive review, and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition said, “All scientists.. and every nutrition science professional…should read this book.” So who exactly is Nina? Before taking a deep dive into researching nutrition science for nearly a decade, she was a reporter for National Public Radio and also contributed to many publications, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, The New Yorker, and The Economist. She attended Yale and Stanford where she studied biology and majored in American Studies. She has a master’s degree from Oxford University and served as associate director of the Center for Globalization and Sustainable Development at Columbia University. She lives in New York City. And I'm guessing she probably has eggs and bacon for breakfast. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What compelled Nina to spend ten years writing a 500 page book after discovering shocking cover-ups in the nutrition industry...[10:55] -What researcher George Mann found in African populations who were subsisting on a diet of organs, meat and blood...[17:30] -Why Lewis and Clark were so disappointed in the game meat they discovered when traveling West...[27:10] -How Americans used to eat, and why it's a huge problem that we now eat so much poultry...[34:45 & 38:45] -What was the "remarking and troublesome omission" from the Ancel Keys study and why the "true" Mediterranean diet is far different than the Mediterranean diet you've probably seen in popular literature...[61:40] -The surprising truth behind why the Cretans were so long lived...[62:50] -How when trans fats got banned, they may have been replaced with something worse, and what that worse thing is...[68:35] -The biggest mistakes that people make when following a high fat diet...[78:40] -And much more! https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/bloodpodcast In the podcast episode "Shattering World Swim Records On 25-Piece Fried Chicken Buckets, Climbing Mountains While Eating Defatted, Vegan, Grass-Fed, Argentinian Liver Anhydrate & Much More" I interviewed athlete and supplement designer Craig Dinkel about a special blood oxygenating formula called "Biotropic". After that interview, I received an onslaught of questions about everything from grass fed liver anhydrate to cordyceps senesis to hidden benefits of beetroots, the detoxification properties of algae, whether it's really true you can get all the benefits of blood doping without actually blood doping and more. So today, Craig is back to answer those questions, and during our discussion, you'll discover: -The one compound that research has shown to cause a 58% chance of a decrease in catching the common cold and the duration of a cold by 1 to 4 days...[9:20] -The mechanism of action via which algae can detoxify your blood...[14:55] -How algae can convert nitrates to nitric oxide...[19:05] -Why chlorella could be the perfect pre-sex supplement...[20:50] -How the polysaccharides in cordyceps contribute oxygen molecules to the blood...[22:10] -The mechanism of action for corydceps to increase endurance or oxygenation...[28:15] -How echinacea increases red blood cells in four different ways...[30:30] -What it means for grass fed liver to be "anhydrated" or "dessicated"...[35:25] -What it means for the iron in the liver to be "heme"...[38:40] -The studies that have shown liver extract to be able to increase endurance by over 750%...[] -The surprising way that beets support muscle stem cell repair...[44:00] -And much more... Ep 806Eat Wheat: A Scientific and Clinically-Proven Approach to Safely Bringing Wheat and Dairy Back Into Your Diet

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/wheatpodcast Are you gluten-free or dairy-free? If so, you might not have to be. In his brand new book "Eat Wheat: A Scientific and Clinically-Proven Approach to Safely Bringing Wheat and Dairy Back Into Your Diet", my former podcast guest Dr. John Douillard introduces a scientific and clinically-proven approach to addressing food intolerances. He thinks that after generations upon generations of human beings eating wheat and only a relatively short few thousand years of hunting meat, we are actually genetically better equipped to eat wheat than meat. In the book Dr. Douillard, who I first interviewed in "The Zen of "The Zone" - How To Breathe The Right Way When You're Working Out" (and who first inspired me to begin nasal rather than mouth breathing during my workouts) addresses the underlying cause of the gluten-free epidemic. He explains how a breakdown in digestion has damaged the intestinal wall and leaked undigested foods and environmental toxins into the body’s lymphatic system, causing “grain brain” symptoms and food allergies. Although eliminating wheat and dairy from your diet may help your symptoms, it is a Band-Aid solution. Backed by more than 600 scientific studies, Eat Wheat claims to address the root cause: weak digestion and the inability to efficiently break down harmful pollutants and toxins that can predispose you to a host of chronic degenerative diseases, such as cancer and autoimmune disorders. Dr. Douillard, DC, CAP, is a globally recognized leader in the fields of natural health, Ayurveda, and sports medicine. He is the creator of LifeSpa.com, the leading Ayurvedic health and wellness resource on the web. LifeSpa.com is evolving the way Ayurveda is understood around the world, with over 700 articles and videos proving ancient wisdom with modern science. Dr. John is the former Director of Player Development for the New Jersey Nets NBA team, author of 6 health books, a repeat guest on the Dr. Oz show, and featured in Woman’s World Magazine, Huffington Post, Yoga Journal and dozens of other publications. He directs LifeSpa, the 2013 Holistic Wellness Center of the year in Boulder, CO. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why John says it's not the "grains" but the "drains"...[9:00] -The studies that show that humans have been eating gluten for a very long time...[15:40] -The difference between modern grain and ancient grain processing...[25:20] -What John means when he says "perhaps we simply have an inability to digest these foods"...[29:15] -The two shocking ingredients added to most breads that are the true culprits to the villainous nature of these breads...[29:50 & 35:40] -Why deer can die when they eat "out of season" and how you can "eat wheat (or dairy) in season", especially in terms of your digestive enzymes...[43:35] -Other surprising examples how you can eat according to nature's cycles...[44:55] -Why the skin prick test for gluten intolerance is notoriously inaccurate...[51:35] -Why you should eat foods that can "dye your clothes"...[56:55] -Why John thinks lunch should be the heaviest meal of the day...[57:35] -How John' s decoction tea works (and why you should sip hot beverages throughout the day)...[63:15] -The strange food called "kitchari" and why John highly recommends including it in your diet...[67:00] -John's recipe for the best sourdough bread he's ever had...[71:00] -And much more! Ep 804The Key To Deciphering The Mysteries Of Your Thyroid And Fixing Your Thyroid Hormones Forever.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/elle I'll admit it: I have thyroid "issues". I've had them ever since I combined extreme ketosis (e.g. 90%+ fat based diet) for a full year, combined with hard and heavy training for Ironman triathlon. So in light of the fact that I've had to battle rock-bottom "T3" levels over the past several years, hypothyroidism is a topic near and dear to my heart. And I'm not alone. Over 200 million people worldwide and 20+ million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, but 60% are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition. Undiagnosed or mistreated hypothyroidism can put people at risk for serious conditions, such as: depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, gynecological issues (infertility/miscarriages/fibroids/PCOS etc.), hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, anemia, and other diseases. My guest on today's show has written one of the most comprehensive resources I've ever read for deciphering the confusing world of thyroid hormones, and fixing your thyroid for good. Her name is Elle Russ and her book is called "The Paleo Thyroid Solution: Stop Feeling Fat, Foggy, And Fatigued At The Hands Of Uninformed Doctors - Reclaim Your Health!". Elle is a writer, health/life coach, and host of the Primal Blueprint Podcast. She is fat becoming a leading voice of thyroid health in the burgeoning Evolutionary Health Movement (also referred to as Paleo, Primal, or Ancestral Health). Elle has a B.A in Philosophy from The University of California at Santa Cruz and is a certified Primal Health Coach. She sits on the advisory board of The Primal Health Coach Program created by Mark Sisson. Originally from downtown Chicago, Elle lives and plays in Malibu, CA. Elle wrote The Paleo Thyroid Solution after consulting with over two dozen endocrinologists, internal medicine specialists, and general practice MDs...only to find that her thyroid condition was getting worse - and nothing from doctors resembled a solution, or even hope. Exasperated and desperate, Elle took control of her own health and resolved two severe bouts of hypothyroidism on her own – including an acute Reverse T3 problem. Through a devoted paleo/primal lifestyle, intensive personal experimentation, and a radically modified approach to thyroid hormone replacement therapy...Elle fixed her thyroid. Her new book The Paleo Thyroid Solution dispels outdated, conventional thyroid wisdom still practiced by uninformed doctors, and instead provides the in-depth guidance necessary to solve hypothyroidism, achieve vibrant health, and optimize thyroid fat-burning hormone metabolism. It provides the only lifestyle and weight loss plan specifically targeted for maximizing thyroid hormone metabolism in harmony with paleo/primal/ancestral health principles. In The Paleo Thyroid Solution, you will learn: Primal/paleo protocols for naturally optimizing and even possibly reversing low thyroid function How to work with your doctor to get the correct blood tests to diagnose hypothyroidism and accurately interpret results How to work with your doctor to optimally treat hypothyroidism with thyroid hormone replacement How to find a good doctor or work with your current one to diagnose and treat Reverse T3 issues (including T3-only treatment) How to lose the insidious fat and weight gained from hypothyroidism An MD’s perspective on why and how some doctors are uninformed and still practicing outdated thyroid protocols (in-depth commentary from integrative physician Dr. Gary E. Foresman, MD) During my discussion with author Elle Russ, you'll discover: -Why Elle call T3 the "hormone of life", and what happened to hers...[10:30 & 13:20] -How to find a doctor who actually knows the right parts of your thyroid to test...[19:00] -Why most thyroid supplements don't actually contain thyroid glandular or thyroid hormones...[23:53] -The confusing hormone "reverse T3" and the ancestral reflex that causes your body to make it...[25:30] -Whether body temperature tests really work, and if there any science to back them up...[38:10] -What vitals you should track, such as heart rate and blood pressure, and the best way to do it...[44:20] -What Elle thinks is the best natural over-the-counter (OTC) thyroid for people who want to "self test" and "self medicate"...[50:30] -Why coconut oil can help to heal thyroid issues (and whether or not marijuana or CBD should be used)...[51:50] -The best prescription form of thyroid hormone to use and what Elle personally takes...[54:55] -The shocking link between chiropractors, acupuncturists and thyroid hormone...[68:27] -What to do if you have tried everything and you're still having issues...[70:27] -And much more! Ep 803Which Ketone Supplement Works Best: Ketone Salts vs. Ketone Esters With Dr. Dominic D’Agostino.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/dom A few months ago, I recorded a highly controversial ketosis interview with Dr. Richard Veech, in which Dr. Veech claimed that the form of ketones most people take to get into ketosis are actually quite dangerous. Dr. Veech's solution was something called "ketone esters", which are extremely expensive, but, according to him, a far more natural, safe and healthy way to quickly get the body into ketosis - for anything from managing medical conditions, to improving cognition, to increasing endurance and beyond. In the video below, I actually experimented with these spendy ketone esters myself and, as you can see, the results were astounding... After shooting this video, I took another bottle of ketone esters to a Tough Mudder event and recorded a crazy video on Snapchat during which I elevated both blood glucose by drinking 75 grams of pure glucose and elevated blood ketones by drinking a bottle of the ketone salts, and the results were equally as astounding, resulting in one of the fastest races of my life. But the question remains: are these fancy, expensive ketone esters actually far better than ketone salts? Are ketone salts, which is what most people use, actually going to result in long term health issues? In today's podcast, I bring on ketosis expert Dr. Dominic D’Agostino to get his opinion. Dominic is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. He is also a Visiting Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). His laboratory develops and tests nutritional strategies and metabolic-based supplements for neurological disorders, cancer inflammation and performance enhancement in extreme environments. His research is supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Defense (DoD), private organizations and foundations. He's also no stranger to this podcast, having been a previous guest in the episode "A Deep Dive Into Ketosis: How Navy Seals, Extreme Athletes & Busy Executives Can Enhance Physical and Mental Performance With The Secret Weapon of Ketone Fuel". During today's discussion, you'll discover: -The difference between a ketone salt and a ketone ester...[9:25] -Three unique compounds you can "mix" with ketones to enhance deliverability, and the important difference between BCAAs and EAA's...[23:55] -Why is it that some people, including Dr. Veech, believe ketone esters to be dangerous and MCT oil to block BHB absorption...[41:05 & 62:40] -What Dominic has found by testing both ketone salts and ketone esters in his lab...[44:30] -If there is actually any evidence of people experiencing medical issues with the use of ketone salts or esters...[47:50] -The safety of using ephedrine for fat loss, and Dom's own experience with ephedrine...[60:05] -Whether you can combine glucose with ketones to enhance performance...[65:40] -Why the salts so much more expensive than the ester, and whether there are ways to make either that actually are cost effective...[72:15] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -My article and review of common ketone supplements such as Pruvit and KetoCaNa called "How To Get Into Ketosis" -The Metabolic Therapeutics Conference -NatureAminos amino acids supplement -Brain Octane -The HMB/ATP stack that Ben takes (and the study that discusses this approach) -Is It Possible To Be Extremely Active and Eat A Low Carbohydrate Diet? Ep 802The Non-Pill, Natural Alternative To Viagra That Instantly Fixes Erectile Dysfunction, Boosts Libido In Men & Women, Enhances Orgasm & Much More.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/gaines Last month, I hopped on an airplane and flew down to Miami, Florida, where I underwent a special type of protocol that is technically called “extracorporeal shock wave therapy,” also known as “Audio Frequency Shockwave Therapy.” Basically, although the physician on today's podcast will be able to explain the nitty-gritty science behind it, this technique uses mild acoustical waves to “shock” a male or female's genitals either A) back to life in the case of things like low libido, erectile dysfunction or small size or B) turn one into the equivalent of, pardon the expression, a sex machine with more blood flow, bigger size, better orgasms and much more. Let's just say I was pretty pleased with my own personal results, so pleased in fact, that I decided to get the doctor who oversaw my procedure onto a podcast. Whether you're a guy or a girl, if you're interested in enhancing your sex life, building new blood vessels, or fixing libido and sexual issues, this is a must listen. Dr. Richard Gaines, MD, FAARM, ABAARM, is the Chief Medical Officer at an age management medical practice company called HealthGAINS. He is a leading practitioner of the rapidly evolving science of "physician-guided age management", and has been administering bioidentical hormone therapy since 1993. After a distinguished thirty-year career as a physician and health-care executive, Dr. Gaines became president and chief medical officer of the age management medical practice HealthGAINS, which he founded in 2005. Ep 801What Doesn’t Kill Us: Why Your Body Needs Freezing Water, Extreme Altitude & Environmental Conditioning.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/hardertokill2 Our ancestors crossed the Alps in animal skins and colonized the New World in loin cloths. They evaded predators and built civilizations with just their raw brainpower and inner grit. But things have changed and now comfort is king. Today we live in the thrall of constant climate control and exercise only when our office schedules permit. The technologies that we use to make us comfortable are so all encompassing that they sever the biological link to a changing environment. Now we hate the cold and the heat. We suffer from autoimmune diseases. And many of us are chronically overweight. Most of us don't even realize that natural variation - sweating and shivering - is actually good for us. The new book What Doesn’t Kill Us: How Freezing Water, Extreme Altitude and Environmental Conditioning Will Renew Our Lost Evolutionary Strength uncovers how just about anyone can reclaim a measure of our species' evolutionary strength by tapping into the things that feel uncomfortable. When we slightly reimagine how how our body fits into the world and then we can conditioning ourselves to find resilience in unfamiliar environments. The feeling that something is missing from our daily routines is growing and has spawned a movement. Every year, millions of people forgo traditional gyms and push the limits of human endurance by doing boot camp style workouts in raw conditions. These extreme athletes train in CrossFit boxes, compete in Tough Mudders and challenge themselves in Spartan races. They are connecting with their environment and, whether they realize it or not, are changing their bodies. Perhaps no one exemplifies this better than Dutch fitness guru Wim Hof, whose remarkable ability to control his body temperature in extreme cold has sparked a whirlwind of scientific study. Because of him, scientists in the United States and Europe are just beginning to understand how cold adaptation might help combat autoimmune diseases and chronic pains and, in some cases, even reverse diabetes. My podcast guest on todays show, award winning investigative journalist Scott Carney, dives into the fundamental philosophy at the root of this movement in three interlocking narratives. His own journey culminates in a record bending, 28-hour, climb up to the snowy peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro wearing nothing but a pair of running shorts and sneakers. Scott is an investigative journalist and anthropologist whose stories blend narrative non-fiction with ethnography. He has been a contributing editor at Wired and his work also appears in Mother Jones, Foreign Policy, Playboy, Details, Discover, Outside and Fast Company. He regularly appears on variety of radio and television stations from NPR to National Geographic TV and has had academic work published in Nature and SAIS Journal. He holds a number of academic appointments including as a Senior Fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism. In 2010 he won the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism for the story “Meet the Parents” which tracked an international kidnapping-to-adoption ring. His first book, The Red Market: On the Trail of the World’s Organ Brokers, Bone Thieves, Blood Farmers and Child Traffickers, was published by William Morrow in 2011 and won the 2012 Clarion Award for best non-fiction book. His second book A Death on Diamond Mountain: A True Story of Obsession, Madness and the Path to Enlightenment came out with Gotham Books in 2015. In 2015, Scott founded WordRates, a website that aims to add transparency to the business of journalism with Yelp-esque reviews of magazines and editors. He first traveled to India while he was a student at Kenyon College in 1998 and spent six years living there. Along the way, he learned Hindi and twice drove a motorcycle across the country. In 2004 he received a MA in anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He currently lives in Denver, CO. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The shocking story of the huge number of people Scott has found who have died during meditation experiences...[10:25 ] -What Scott experienced when he first met Wim Hof...[9:55 & 15:00] -The Native American who hung out in the dead of winter in the Boston area wearing nothing but a loincloth...[25:32] -The #1 food item you can consume that will inhibit your body from converting white fat into metabolically active brown fat...[32:22] -Scott's "power pushups" and 15 minute daily workout...[48:40] -What was the hardest part of the Laird Hamilton underwater workout for Scott...[58:30] -The new, little-known synthetic thyroid hormone that activates brown fat tissue...[62:55] -The crazy things heat acclimatization can do for soldiers...[70:15] -And much more... Ep 799WHOOP: The Performance Enhancing Wearable That Tells You When To Sleep, How To Exercise, Your Strain Levels & More!

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/whoop My guest on today's show - Will Ahmed - grew up loving sports and exercise. Many of his childhood heroes were athletes. He was recruited to Harvard and became Captain of the Men’s Varsity Squash Team. As a D1 athlete, he was amazed by how little he knew about his body. He would train for 3 or more hours a day with his teammates without knowing what gains he made. He was surrounded by athletes, himself included, who overtrained, misinterpreted fitness peaks, underestimated recovery and sleep, and got injured. Being prepared for game day often seemed…random. So he became inspired by a simple idea: Humans, especially athletes, could optimize their daily performance. Optimizing performance was not a random sequence of events and decisions, but rather a systematic approach to understanding your body. At Harvard, he met with cardiologists and physiologists. He read over 300 medical papers because he became obsessed with understanding the human body. What he learned was amazing: There are secrets that your body – your physiology – is trying to tell you. These secrets can help prevent overtraining and injury, they can detect fatigue and even sickness, and, sure enough, they can be used to optimize human performance. But few actually monitor those metrics. He partnered with his co-founder John Capodilupo, who was studying math and statistics at Harvard before dropping out to found a self-quantification company called "WHOOP", and also partnered with Aurelian Nicolae, a graduate from Harvard with a gift for mechanical prototyping and engineering. They then spent the past 4 years building a technology called "the WHOOP System". They assembled a scientific and performance advisory board and now work alongside our team of 50 engineers, designers, and data scientists in a downtown Boston office overlooking Fenway Park. They've been fortunate to work with many of the best athletes in the world. What they've discovered has amazed Will, and we talk about it all on today's show. Self quantification can transform your life and induce effects like positive behavior change, fitness improvements, injury reduction. Will believes that the data he's collecting on athletes is unprecedented, both in its sophistication and scale, and that no physiological studies have ever occurred on this magnitude. WHOOP benefits from the fact that athletes also have tangible performance data (wins/losses, batting average, time trials, etc) across sports. They want to share this data: the unbelievable correlations between physiology and performance; the approach to health monitoring and the different ways to interpret or action your body’s feedback. Beyond building a product that people love, Will and the team at WHOOP hope to advance human knowledge with our discoveries. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The key defining characteristics that set WHOOP apart, including skin conductivity, accelerometer data, and continuous HRV monitoring...[13:25] -Why WHOOP is the only company to measure the activity and fluctuations of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, particularly as it relates to recovery, training status, and training readiness...[13:57] -The actual hard data being collected by the WHOOP, and HRV, pulse oximetry, temperature, respiration, etc.)...[15:30 & 24:30] -Why the WHOOP uses a combination of PPG (photoplethysmography) sensors (4 LEDs and 1 Photodiode) along with 3-axis accelerometer, capacitive touch sensor, ambient temperature sensor...[18:17] -How coaches and trainers can use WHOOP to monitor the sleep, training and recovery status of a large number of athletes and clients...[20:00, 30:00 , 35:50 & 47:50] -Why the WHOOP has 90% sleep/wake accuracy compared to gold-standard sleep labs...[22:10] -How the WHOOP sleep coach automatically calculates sleep needed based on your sleep baseline, any sleep debt that has accumulated over the last few nights, and any naps taken for that day...[39:15] -The technology the WHOOP uses to tell you how much sleep you need and to give you a picture of when you should go to bed based on your habitual sleep efficiency and desired wake up time...[40:15] -Why athletes like Lebron James and Michael Phelps are using the WHOOP...[59:15] -And much more... Ep 798Pee Strips, Power Lungs & Pulse Oximeters: How To Flip The Switch On Your Body's Own Natural Ability To Heal Itself (& Little-Known Ways To Breathe Better).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/breathepodcast In the past several months, I've taken a deep, deep dive into breath work. Sure, in the past years I've written articles on everything from combining ketosis, breath holds and freediving, to how to make your own hyperbaric "exercise with oxygen therapy" (EWOT) device, to Wim Hof style breathing for cold thermogenesis to underwater workouts with Laird Hamilton to making yourself high with holotropic breathwork to the use of fancy breath strips and "Turbine" devices to enhance nasal breathing during both exercise and sleep... ...but lately, I've been making a very concerted effort to consistently do deep nasal breathing, rhythmic breathing and breath hold tactics during walks, weight training sessions, road trips and beyond. And by concerted, I mean consistently, every day, until these forms of breathing become fully automatic. In her new book "Breathe: The Simple, Revolutionary 14-Day Program to Improve Your Mental and Physical Health" my guest Dr. Belisa Vranich explains why breathing is so crucial for optimizing brain and body performance, and she delves into one of the most comprehensive treatises of practical breathing tactics that I've ever read (the other best book on this topic is "The Oxygen Advantage" by Patrick McKeown, who I'm also getting on the podcast soon). She highlights the results she's seen in her research and in her own patients, including... Insomnia? Gone. Anxiety? Gone. All without medication. Unpleasant side effects from blood pressure pills? Gone. A cheap and effective way to combat cardiovascular disease, immune dysfunction, obesity, and GI disorders? Yes. Sounds too good to be true? Contemporary science confirms what generations of healers have observed through centuries of practice: Breath awareness can turn on the body’s natural abilities to prevent and cure illness. The mental and physical stresses of modern life, such as anxiety, frustration, sexual dysfunction, insomnia, high blood pressure, digestive woes, and immune dysfunction can all be addressed through conscious control of your breath. In addition, it can increase energy, accelerate healing, improve cognitive skills, and enhance mental balance. Yet most of us stopped breathing in the anatomically “right” way, the way to take advantage of these benefits, when we were four or five years old. We now mostly breathe in a way that is anatomically incongruous and makes for more illness. But in the book "Breathe", Dr. Vranich shows readers how to turn back the tide of stress and illness, and improve the overall quality of their life through a daily breathing workout. In a fascinating, straightforward, jargon-free exploration of how our bodies were meant to breathe, she delves into the ins and outs of proper breathing. By combining both anatomy and fitness with psychology and mindfulness, Dr. Vranich gives readers a way of solving health problems at the crux and healing themselves from the inside out. Breathe is an easy-to-follow guide to breathing exercises that will increase energy, help lose weight, and make you feel calmer and happier. Dr. Vranich is a clinical psychologist with over twenty years of experience, and she has spent the last decade dedicating herself to the study of breathing. She is the founder of The Breathing Class and has appeared in dozens of national media outlets, including Anderson Cooper, CNN, Fox, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, The Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, Men's Fitness and Huffington Post. She is also the former sports psychologist for Gold's Gym and columnist for Shape. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How to determine something called your "baseline breath"...[10:35] -The best biohacking gear that you can use to self quantify and test your breath...[24:45 & 28:10] -What percentage oxygen level you should look at when using an oximeter to check your blood oxygenation levels...[29:15] -The acid-alkaline relationship between something called "overbreathing" and craving junk foods...[19:20 & 34:40] -Why your breath hold time may not be that important (unless you're into freediving, spearfishing, shooting, golfing, surfing, surgery or tattoo artistry)...[38:00 & 42:00] -Why rock musicians have very strong vagus nerve stimulation...[52:20] -How breathwork detoxifies your body and moves lymph through your circulatory system...[57:30] -The $3000 device that Dr. Vranich swears by for full body massage and diaphragmatic stimulation...[64:45] -What Dr. Vranich thinks of devices like the Powerlung and the Elevation Training Mask...[70:50] -And much more! Ep 795Living Large: The Skinny Guy's Guide to No-Nonsense Muscle Building With Vince Del Monte.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/livinglarge Nine years ago, I sat slack-jawed in the crowd at an event called "Fitness Business Summit", listening to a massive, muscle-bound trainer on stage tell his story of creating an e-book that made millions of dollars online and helped hundreds of thousands of skinny guys across the globe sculpt their thin bodies into herculean, Adonis-like physiques. I was actually so inspired by this guy's story that I went on to create my own "e-product" - a training system for Ironman triathletes to cross the finish line of an Ironman triathlon with less than ten hours of training per week, and still have plenty of time left over for friends, family, hobbies and career. I called it "The Triathlon Dominator", and it was my first big training program that I ever sold online. In an odd collision of fitness worlds, I have suddenly reconnected with Mr. X via a brand new book I recently received in the mail: Living Large: The Skinny Guy's Guide to No-Nonsense Muscle Building. Formerly known as "Skinny Vinny", Vinny's real name is Vince Del Monte, and he now goes by the name "The Skinny Guy Savior". Vinny's new book is jam-packed with everything you need to quickly build 30 pounds of rock-solid, shredded muscle without dangerous bodybuilding drugs, expensive supplements, and long hours in the gym, and it's actually not written like most books of this nature are, with pure meat-headedness. Instead, this book is intelligently written, full of practical advice and during our discussion, you'll discover: -How Vince made the transition from skinny endurance athlete and collegiate runner to becoming muscle-building phenomenon...[16:15] -The extremely unconventional training program Vince's first bodybuilding mentor used...[18:40] -Vince and Ben's thoughts on steroids...[24:40] -Why Vince says "get lean to get big" and how fat can diminish your ability to build muscle, especially in response to a high protein meal...[27:25] -The three mechanisms via which muscles actually grow, and how to target each of the three mechanisms...[47:50] -How massage therapy or foam rolling can directly assist with muscle building, and why Vince is such a fan of a muscle activation technique called "MAT"...[55:05] -What science says about how much muscle one can really build in a month...[63:05] -The seven key oils Vince uses and why...[73:00] -And much more... Resources from this episode: -My interview with Vinny's wife Flavia "7 Essential Kitchen Items You’ve Never Heard Of But Need To Have." -Vince's new book: Living Large: The Skinny Guy's Guide to No-Nonsense Muscle Building -Photos of Vince's brother Michael's impressive muscle gain -Study: Anabolic sensitivity of postprandial muscle protein synthesis to the ingestion of a protein-dense food is reduced in overweight and obese young adults. -Podcast: “Dr. Two Fingers” Reveals His Teeth-Gritting, Body-Healing Secrets.“ Do you have questions, thoughts or feedback for Vince or me? Ep 794Why The Media & Supplement Companies Lie To You About Diets & Supplements (& What You Can Do About It).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/examinepodcast I'm a voracious consumer of knowledge. On an average week, I read 3-5 books, listen to 15-20 podcasts, and read several dozen research articles. And one of my secrets to this hyperproductive digestion of information is through the use of services, websites, journals, newsletters and, well, "digests" that disseminate information into readily accessible bite-size pieces that allow me to cut through the clutter and quickly get to the main summaries, takeaways and actionable items from all the content. For example, I'm a huge fan of the book reviews produced by gentleman such as Derek Sivers and James Clear. In addition, I stay up to date with health, medical and science news via the Stone Hearth Newsletters, exercise and nutrition research via the website Suppversity, and, for general life knowledge, I'm a recent subscriber to the Farnham Street blog for staying up-to-date with the best recently published books and articles from around the web. And - for one of the most comprehensive exercise, diet, supplement resources I have ever accessed - I am a frequent visitor to the website Examine and their monthly publication The Examine Research Digest, which is produced by today's podcast guest: Kamal Patel. Kamal is the director of Examine.com, an independent and unbiased encyclopedia on supplementation and nutrition. He is a nutrition researcher with an MPH and MBA from Johns Hopkins University, and is on hiatus from a PhD in nutrition, in which he researched the link between diet and chronic pain. He has published peer-reviewed articles on vitamin D and calcium as well as a variety of clinical research topics, and in today's episode, you'll discover: -How supplement companies and the media manipulate science for their own benefits...[11:38 & 16:30] -Why Kamal thinks the "elimination diet" for nightshades is a hoax...[18:55] -The best way to know if a diet or supplement website is delivering you fake information...[29:35] -The truth about what they really feed lab rats and mice in high-fat diet studies...[31:35] -Why an extremely high percentage of the research released in medical journals is flawed or biased...[35:00] -The best way to quickly review an abstract without reading a full article, and red flags to look out for when reading an abstract...[44:50 & 48:30] -The top three most proven and researched supplements that just about everyone could benefit from...[54:56] -The surprising benefits of daily creatine intake...[61:50] -Why Kamal doesn't take fish oil, but Ben does, and how genetics should influence supplement intake...[65:35 & 68:35] -The two supplements most people most infatuated with that Kamal thinks have very low credibility...[72:15] -The most beneficial one-two combo stack you can take for daily mental performance...[77:45] -Why you should spread your vegetable intake throughout the day to maximize your nitrate exposure...[80:48] -And much more! Ep 79317 Ways I'm Detoxing My Body In 2017: A Special Solo Podcast Episode.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/detoxpodcas t I'm going to detox my entire body and brain, beginning Monday, January 9, 2017 (and you can listen to today's podcast episode to learn what the random, strange photo above has to do with this). Anyways, I'm not going to do just any ol' detox like putting cayenne pepper into a nasty concoction or pushing giant grocery shopping carts full of random herbs through the supermarket. These popular detoxes can actually release toxins from tissues such as fat cells and shove them into the brain, causing even more damage. Oops. That's a bad thing. Instead, I'm partnering up with one of the most brilliant detox minds on the face of the planet: the guy I interviewed in the podcast "The Most Effective Detox You’ve Never Heard Of (And Exactly How To Do It)." His name is Dr. Dan Pompa, and Dr. Dan is going to walk me through the entire brain and body detox program that he's studied and perfected for years. I'm then going to combine his proven detox formula with my own exercise and biohacking protocols so that I can completely clean up my body without losing fitness by doing only, say, hot yoga and trampolining for weeks and weeks. Ep 791Why My Barber Thinks I'm A Freak (& Crazy Health Discoveries You Can Get From Your Hair, Your Urine & Your Stool).

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/hairpodcast This is a special Premium audio episode. Click here to activate a Premium subscription to the BenGreenfieldFitness show and access this and over 300 additional hidden audios, videos, pdf's and more! The lady who cuts my hair must think I'm a freak. It seems like every time I visit her for a haircut, I'm politely requesting that she save several clumps of my hair clippings for me to place in a small envelope and mail to my friend Wendy Myers. Why am I mailing my hair? Because Wendy is the expert when it comes to something called "hair mineral analysis". And she doesn't stop there: she does urine and stool too, so I sent her that way last month, and she was able to reveal a host of health information we can find from our hair, our urine and our stool - all topics that we address on this podcast. Wendy is a functional diagnostic nutritionist (FDN), a certified holistic health coach (CHHC), and the founder of Liveto110. She attended the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York and has a degree in Entrepreneurship from the University of Southern California. She is certified in Hair Mineral Analysis for the purpose of designing programs for clients to correct their metabolism and body chemistry with customized targeted nutrient therapy. Wendy’s interest in nutrition began with the death of her father from esophageal cancer. Intuitively, she knew his chemo, radiation, and ten medications killed him prematurely. She vowed to find out what made him sick, why he died, what role medications played in his demise, and how she could avoid the same fate. The more Wendy learned, the more she realized that all the answers to health do not lie in our medical system. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why a lot of people say that the hair is really not a reflection of what's going on inside the body...[4:00] -How hair analysis actually works in terms of accuracy and lab testing...[6:25] -Why you need to look at mineral ratios and metal ratios when you do a hair tissue mineral analysis...[8:25] -Why Wendy thinks my "soil" is high in heavy metals...[15:45] -Why cooking in cast iron skillets can actually cause oxidation in the body...[23:02] -The problem with the way that most physicians do a urine test...[36:15] -What Wendy learned from my urine test in the "pre metals" and "post metals" results...[38:55] -What the Fukushima disaster in Japan is doing to people's metal levels of metals like cesium...[40:50] -How a stool metals test is different than a stool test for gut health...[50:15] -What Wendy learned from my stool test...[51:10] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -My hair mineral analysis results -My urine pre-metals results -My urine post-metals results -My stool test results -Get your own testing done -Wendy's special offer for you is that you get $50 off her testing program we talk about in this episode. Ep 786Decoding The Science Behind The Best Tasting Bone Broth On The Face Of The Planet.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/kettleandfire There's much more to bone broth than meets the eye. Take the bones for example. Killer bones make killer bone broth, but not all bones are created equal. Knuckle, patella, femur, and feet bones actually make the best broth, because these bones have been proven to contain the highest concentration of white and red stem-cell marrow, as well as the highest levels of collagen - one of the major benefits of drinking bone broth. The ingredients matter too. For example, you can achieve one of the most nourishing bone broths on the face of the planet when you combine marrow bones like those listed above (from pasture raised, grass-fed cows) with organic carrots, organic onions, organic celery, organic bay leaves, organic parsley, apple cider vinegar, a pinch of black peppercorn, sea salt, thyme and rosemary extract. Bone broth packaging matters too. Most bone broth companies aren’t USDA approved and require their bone broth to be frozen. This makes shipping a hassle (not to mention expensive!) makes the bone broth hard to store, and requires the heavy addition of preservatives, nasty additives and extra sodium or worse yet, packaging that is chock full of pathogens and germs. But this kind of information flies under the radar, so in today's podcast, my guest Justin Mares and I pull back the curtain on all things bone broth. Justin is the founder of Kettle & Fire bone broth, the first ever fresh, never frozen organic bone broth company, and during our discussion, you'll discover: -Why bone broth is supposed to form a gelatin when it's in your fridge, and why you shouldn't eat it if it doesn't "gel"...[9:52] -Whether there's any actual research on bone broth, or just on the individual components of it, like glycine or glucosamine or collagen...[14:50] -Which is the best type of broth: cow, chicken or fish...[22:37] -What the best kind of bones are for bone broth...[29:45] -The difference between red-cell marrow and white-cell marrow, and which you should consume...[31:45] -Why Kettle & Fire adds to their bone broth 100% grass-fed cows, organic carrots, organic celery, organic onions, organic bay leaves, organic apple cider vinegar, and reverse osmosis purified water...[34:10] -The best temperature for bone broth to keep nutrients from degrading...[36:50] -How can you actually get a packaged and shipped bone broth sent to your house without having a bunch of preservatives and artificial crap in it...[39:18] -Why you should stay far away from any grocery store bone broths...[43:00] -How bone broth can be used to lose weight, stay in ketosis, heal a leaky gut, fix constipation, and much more...[46:55] Resources from this episode: -Kettle & Fire Bone Broth (that link gets you $10 off any order, and additional discounts if you add more bone broth cartons to your cart). -The study Justin mentioned about glycine attenuating the insulin spike that comes with glucose ingestion. -Ben's bark tea recipe Do you have questions, thoughts or feedback for Justin or me?
