Ep 806Eat Wheat: A Scientific and Clinically-Proven Approach to Safely Bringing Wheat and Dairy Back Into Your Diet
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/wheatpodcast Are you gluten-free or dairy-free? If so, you might not have to be. In his brand new book "Eat Wheat: A Scientific and Clinically-Proven Approach to Safely Bringing Wheat and Dairy Back Into Your Diet", my former podcast guest Dr. John Douillard introduces a scientific and clinically-proven approach to addressing food intolerances. He thinks that after generations upon generations of human beings eating wheat and only a relatively short few thousand years of hunting meat, we are actually genetically better equipped to eat wheat than meat. In the book Dr. Douillard, who I first interviewed in "The Zen of "The Zone" - How To Breathe The Right Way When You're Working Out" (and who first inspired me to begin nasal rather than mouth breathing during my workouts) addresses the underlying cause of the gluten-free epidemic. He explains how a breakdown in digestion has damaged the intestinal wall and leaked undigested foods and environmental toxins into the body’s lymphatic system, causing “grain brain” symptoms and food allergies. Although eliminating wheat and dairy from your diet may help your symptoms, it is a Band-Aid solution. Backed by more than 600 scientific studies, Eat Wheat claims to address the root cause: weak digestion and the inability to efficiently break down harmful pollutants and toxins that can predispose you to a host of chronic degenerative diseases, such as cancer and autoimmune disorders. Dr. Douillard, DC, CAP, is a globally recognized leader in the fields of natural health, Ayurveda, and sports medicine. He is the creator of LifeSpa.com, the leading Ayurvedic health and wellness resource on the web. LifeSpa.com is evolving the way Ayurveda is understood around the world, with over 700 articles and videos proving ancient wisdom with modern science. Dr. John is the former Director of Player Development for the New Jersey Nets NBA team, author of 6 health books, a repeat guest on the Dr. Oz show, and featured in Woman’s World Magazine, Huffington Post, Yoga Journal and dozens of other publications. He directs LifeSpa, the 2013 Holistic Wellness Center of the year in Boulder, CO. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why John says it's not the "grains" but the "drains"...[9:00] -The studies that show that humans have been eating gluten for a very long time...[15:40] -The difference between modern grain and ancient grain processing...[25:20] -What John means when he says "perhaps we simply have an inability to digest these foods"...[29:15] -The two shocking ingredients added to most breads that are the true culprits to the villainous nature of these breads...[29:50 & 35:40] -Why deer can die when they eat "out of season" and how you can "eat wheat (or dairy) in season", especially in terms of your digestive enzymes...[43:35] -Other surprising examples how you can eat according to nature's cycles...[44:55] -Why the skin prick test for gluten intolerance is notoriously inaccurate...[51:35] -Why you should eat foods that can "dye your clothes"...[56:55] -Why John thinks lunch should be the heaviest meal of the day...[57:35] -How John' s decoction tea works (and why you should sip hot beverages throughout the day)...[63:15] -The strange food called "kitchari" and why John highly recommends including it in your diet...[67:00] -John's recipe for the best sourdough bread he's ever had...[71:00] -And much more! Ep 804The Key To Deciphering The Mysteries Of Your Thyroid And Fixing Your Thyroid Hormones Forever.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/elle I'll admit it: I have thyroid "issues". I've had them ever since I combined extreme ketosis (e.g. 90%+ fat based diet) for a full year, combined with hard and heavy training for Ironman triathlon. So in light of the fact that I've had to battle rock-bottom "T3" levels over the past several years, hypothyroidism is a topic near and dear to my heart. And I'm not alone. Over 200 million people worldwide and 20+ million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, but 60% are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition. Undiagnosed or mistreated hypothyroidism can put people at risk for serious conditions, such as: depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, gynecological issues (infertility/miscarriages/fibroids/PCOS etc.), hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, anemia, and other diseases. My guest on today's show has written one of the most comprehensive resources I've ever read for deciphering the confusing world of thyroid hormones, and fixing your thyroid for good. Her name is Elle Russ and her book is called "The Paleo Thyroid Solution: Stop Feeling Fat, Foggy, And Fatigued At The Hands Of Uninformed Doctors - Reclaim Your Health!". Elle is a writer, health/life coach, and host of the Primal Blueprint Podcast. She is fat becoming a leading voice of thyroid health in the burgeoning Evolutionary Health Movement (also referred to as Paleo, Primal, or Ancestral Health). Elle has a B.A in Philosophy from The University of California at Santa Cruz and is a certified Primal Health Coach. She sits on the advisory board of The Primal Health Coach Program created by Mark Sisson. Originally from downtown Chicago, Elle lives and plays in Malibu, CA. Elle wrote The Paleo Thyroid Solution after consulting with over two dozen endocrinologists, internal medicine specialists, and general practice MDs...only to find that her thyroid condition was getting worse - and nothing from doctors resembled a solution, or even hope. Exasperated and desperate, Elle took control of her own health and resolved two severe bouts of hypothyroidism on her own – including an acute Reverse T3 problem. Through a devoted paleo/primal lifestyle, intensive personal experimentation, and a radically modified approach to thyroid hormone replacement therapy...Elle fixed her thyroid. Her new book The Paleo Thyroid Solution dispels outdated, conventional thyroid wisdom still practiced by uninformed doctors, and instead provides the in-depth guidance necessary to solve hypothyroidism, achieve vibrant health, and optimize thyroid fat-burning hormone metabolism. It provides the only lifestyle and weight loss plan specifically targeted for maximizing thyroid hormone metabolism in harmony with paleo/primal/ancestral health principles. In The Paleo Thyroid Solution, you will learn: Primal/paleo protocols for naturally optimizing and even possibly reversing low thyroid function How to work with your doctor to get the correct blood tests to diagnose hypothyroidism and accurately interpret results How to work with your doctor to optimally treat hypothyroidism with thyroid hormone replacement How to find a good doctor or work with your current one to diagnose and treat Reverse T3 issues (including T3-only treatment) How to lose the insidious fat and weight gained from hypothyroidism An MD’s perspective on why and how some doctors are uninformed and still practicing outdated thyroid protocols (in-depth commentary from integrative physician Dr. Gary E. Foresman, MD) During my discussion with author Elle Russ, you'll discover: -Why Elle call T3 the "hormone of life", and what happened to hers...[10:30 & 13:20] -How to find a doctor who actually knows the right parts of your thyroid to test...[19:00] -Why most thyroid supplements don't actually contain thyroid glandular or thyroid hormones...[23:53] -The confusing hormone "reverse T3" and the ancestral reflex that causes your body to make it...[25:30] -Whether body temperature tests really work, and if there any science to back them up...[38:10] -What vitals you should track, such as heart rate and blood pressure, and the best way to do it...[44:20] -What Elle thinks is the best natural over-the-counter (OTC) thyroid for people who want to "self test" and "self medicate"...[50:30] -Why coconut oil can help to heal thyroid issues (and whether or not marijuana or CBD should be used)...[51:50] -The best prescription form of thyroid hormone to use and what Elle personally takes...[54:55] -The shocking link between chiropractors, acupuncturists and thyroid hormone...[68:27] -What to do if you have tried everything and you're still having issues...[70:27] -And much more! Ep 803Which Ketone Supplement Works Best: Ketone Salts vs. Ketone Esters With Dr. Dominic D’Agostino.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/dom A few months ago, I recorded a highly controversial ketosis interview with Dr. Richard Veech, in which Dr. Veech claimed that the form of ketones most people take to get into ketosis are actually quite dangerous. Dr. Veech's solution was something called "ketone esters", which are extremely expensive, but, according to him, a far more natural, safe and healthy way to quickly get the body into ketosis - for anything from managing medical conditions, to improving cognition, to increasing endurance and beyond. In the video below, I actually experimented with these spendy ketone esters myself and, as you can see, the results were astounding... After shooting this video, I took another bottle of ketone esters to a Tough Mudder event and recorded a crazy video on Snapchat during which I elevated both blood glucose by drinking 75 grams of pure glucose and elevated blood ketones by drinking a bottle of the ketone salts, and the results were equally as astounding, resulting in one of the fastest races of my life. But the question remains: are these fancy, expensive ketone esters actually far better than ketone salts? Are ketone salts, which is what most people use, actually going to result in long term health issues? In today's podcast, I bring on ketosis expert Dr. Dominic D’Agostino to get his opinion. Dominic is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. He is also a Visiting Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). His laboratory develops and tests nutritional strategies and metabolic-based supplements for neurological disorders, cancer inflammation and performance enhancement in extreme environments. His research is supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Defense (DoD), private organizations and foundations. He's also no stranger to this podcast, having been a previous guest in the episode "A Deep Dive Into Ketosis: How Navy Seals, Extreme Athletes & Busy Executives Can Enhance Physical and Mental Performance With The Secret Weapon of Ketone Fuel". During today's discussion, you'll discover: -The difference between a ketone salt and a ketone ester...[9:25] -Three unique compounds you can "mix" with ketones to enhance deliverability, and the important difference between BCAAs and EAA's...[23:55] -Why is it that some people, including Dr. Veech, believe ketone esters to be dangerous and MCT oil to block BHB absorption...[41:05 & 62:40] -What Dominic has found by testing both ketone salts and ketone esters in his lab...[44:30] -If there is actually any evidence of people experiencing medical issues with the use of ketone salts or esters...[47:50] -The safety of using ephedrine for fat loss, and Dom's own experience with ephedrine...[60:05] -Whether you can combine glucose with ketones to enhance performance...[65:40] -Why the salts so much more expensive than the ester, and whether there are ways to make either that actually are cost effective...[72:15] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -My article and review of common ketone supplements such as Pruvit and KetoCaNa called "How To Get Into Ketosis" -The Metabolic Therapeutics Conference -NatureAminos amino acids supplement -Brain Octane -The HMB/ATP stack that Ben takes (and the study that discusses this approach) -Is It Possible To Be Extremely Active and Eat A Low Carbohydrate Diet? Ep 802The Non-Pill, Natural Alternative To Viagra That Instantly Fixes Erectile Dysfunction, Boosts Libido In Men & Women, Enhances Orgasm & Much More.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/gaines Last month, I hopped on an airplane and flew down to Miami, Florida, where I underwent a special type of protocol that is technically called “extracorporeal shock wave therapy,” also known as “Audio Frequency Shockwave Therapy.” Basically, although the physician on today's podcast will be able to explain the nitty-gritty science behind it, this technique uses mild acoustical waves to “shock” a male or female's genitals either A) back to life in the case of things like low libido, erectile dysfunction or small size or B) turn one into the equivalent of, pardon the expression, a sex machine with more blood flow, bigger size, better orgasms and much more. Let's just say I was pretty pleased with my own personal results, so pleased in fact, that I decided to get the doctor who oversaw my procedure onto a podcast. Whether you're a guy or a girl, if you're interested in enhancing your sex life, building new blood vessels, or fixing libido and sexual issues, this is a must listen. Dr. Richard Gaines, MD, FAARM, ABAARM, is the Chief Medical Officer at an age management medical practice company called HealthGAINS. He is a leading practitioner of the rapidly evolving science of "physician-guided age management", and has been administering bioidentical hormone therapy since 1993. After a distinguished thirty-year career as a physician and health-care executive, Dr. Gaines became president and chief medical officer of the age management medical practice HealthGAINS, which he founded in 2005. He graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1981, completed his internship at Tufts University School of Medicine and his residency at Harvard Medical School and earned a fellowship in cardiac and obstetric anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He subsequently served as a physician at Huntington Memorial Hospital and as an anesthesiologist at Harvard Community Health Plan and Sheridan Healthcorp. Dr. Gaines is also a member of the following professional organizations: -ACAM – The American College for Advancement in Medicine -A4M – The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine -IFM – The Institute for Functional Medicine -AMMG – Age Management Medicine Group His professional certifications include: -Fellowship in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine (FAARM) from the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. -Board certification from the American Board of Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine (ABAARM). -Certification as a Functional Medicine Practitioner with advanced training at The Institute for Functional Medicine. Hormone Replacement Therapy Dr. Gaines is a pioneer in the use of hormone replacement therapy, or HRT for both men and women. Before dedicating himself to helping men and women be healthier, happier, and more vital from their 30s to their 40s and beyond through HRT, Dr. Gaines worked as an anesthesiologist. For three decades he was a board certified anesthesiologist at some of the most well-known hospitals in the country, and he maintains that specialty to this day. Most notably related to today's podcast, Dr. Gaines is the creator of something called "Gaines Enhancement", which is one of the only drug free, surgery free male enhancement procedures that not only provides effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), but that can also increase both the length and girth of the penis. During our discussion, you'll discover: - The shocking number of guys who take Viagra, Cialis or some other kind of ED med...[10:25] -Aside from the exorbitant cost, are there any known deleterious side effects to Viagra...21:25[] -The fascinating history of the use of sound wave therapy and pulse wave therapy in medicine...[25:45] -How this same technique can be used to significantly decrease risk of heart attack...[31:40] -Whether the GainsWave therapy is any different than a "pump" that many men use...[46:00] -The "P-shot" and "O-shot" that Dr. Gaines injects into the genitals of men and women...[50:55] -How what Dr. Gaines does is any different than a company like, say, Cenegenics does...[52:53] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -The GainsWave website (if you want to go to Miami, Florida and have the protocol done by Dr. Gaines, simply mention this podcast or "Ben Greenfield" to save 5% off your entire protocol and any follow-up procedures you decide to get done - from P-shots to sound wave therapy and beyond.) Ep 801What Doesn’t Kill Us: Why Your Body Needs Freezing Water, Extreme Altitude & Environmental Conditioning.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/hardertokill2 Our ancestors crossed the Alps in animal skins and colonized the New World in loin cloths. They evaded predators and built civilizations with just their raw brainpower and inner grit. But things have changed and now comfort is king. Today we live in the thrall of constant climate control and exercise only when our office schedules permit. The technologies that we use to make us comfortable are so all encompassing that they sever the biological link to a changing environment. Now we hate the cold and the heat. We suffer from autoimmune diseases. And many of us are chronically overweight. Most of us don't even realize that natural variation - sweating and shivering - is actually good for us. The new book What Doesn’t Kill Us: How Freezing Water, Extreme Altitude and Environmental Conditioning Will Renew Our Lost Evolutionary Strength uncovers how just about anyone can reclaim a measure of our species' evolutionary strength by tapping into the things that feel uncomfortable. When we slightly reimagine how how our body fits into the world and then we can conditioning ourselves to find resilience in unfamiliar environments. The feeling that something is missing from our daily routines is growing and has spawned a movement. Every year, millions of people forgo traditional gyms and push the limits of human endurance by doing boot camp style workouts in raw conditions. These extreme athletes train in CrossFit boxes, compete in Tough Mudders and challenge themselves in Spartan races. They are connecting with their environment and, whether they realize it or not, are changing their bodies. Perhaps no one exemplifies this better than Dutch fitness guru Wim Hof, whose remarkable ability to control his body temperature in extreme cold has sparked a whirlwind of scientific study. Because of him, scientists in the United States and Europe are just beginning to understand how cold adaptation might help combat autoimmune diseases and chronic pains and, in some cases, even reverse diabetes. My podcast guest on todays show, award winning investigative journalist Scott Carney, dives into the fundamental philosophy at the root of this movement in three interlocking narratives. His own journey culminates in a record bending, 28-hour, climb up to the snowy peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro wearing nothing but a pair of running shorts and sneakers. Scott is an investigative journalist and anthropologist whose stories blend narrative non-fiction with ethnography. He has been a contributing editor at Wired and his work also appears in Mother Jones, Foreign Policy, Playboy, Details, Discover, Outside and Fast Company. He regularly appears on variety of radio and television stations from NPR to National Geographic TV and has had academic work published in Nature and SAIS Journal. He holds a number of academic appointments including as a Senior Fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism. In 2010 he won the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism for the story “Meet the Parents” which tracked an international kidnapping-to-adoption ring. His first book, The Red Market: On the Trail of the World’s Organ Brokers, Bone Thieves, Blood Farmers and Child Traffickers, was published by William Morrow in 2011 and won the 2012 Clarion Award for best non-fiction book. His second book A Death on Diamond Mountain: A True Story of Obsession, Madness and the Path to Enlightenment came out with Gotham Books in 2015. In 2015, Scott founded WordRates, a website that aims to add transparency to the business of journalism with Yelp-esque reviews of magazines and editors. He first traveled to India while he was a student at Kenyon College in 1998 and spent six years living there. Along the way, he learned Hindi and twice drove a motorcycle across the country. In 2004 he received a MA in anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He currently lives in Denver, CO. Ep 799WHOOP: The Performance Enhancing Wearable That Tells You When To Sleep, How To Exercise, Your Strain Levels & More!
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/whoop My guest on today's show - Will Ahmed - grew up loving sports and exercise. Many of his childhood heroes were athletes. He was recruited to Harvard and became Captain of the Men’s Varsity Squash Team. As a D1 athlete, he was amazed by how little he knew about his body. He would train for 3 or more hours a day with his teammates without knowing what gains he made. He was surrounded by athletes, himself included, who overtrained, misinterpreted fitness peaks, underestimated recovery and sleep, and got injured. Being prepared for game day often seemed…random. So he became inspired by a simple idea: Humans, especially athletes, could optimize their daily performance. Optimizing performance was not a random sequence of events and decisions, but rather a systematic approach to understanding your body. At Harvard, he met with cardiologists and physiologists. He read over 300 medical papers because he became obsessed with understanding the human body. What he learned was amazing: There are secrets that your body – your physiology – is trying to tell you. These secrets can help prevent overtraining and injury, they can detect fatigue and even sickness, and, sure enough, they can be used to optimize human performance. But few actually monitor those metrics. He partnered with his co-founder John Capodilupo, who was studying math and statistics at Harvard before dropping out to found a self-quantification company called "WHOOP", and also partnered with Aurelian Nicolae, a graduate from Harvard with a gift for mechanical prototyping and engineering. They then spent the past 4 years building a technology called "the WHOOP System". They assembled a scientific and performance advisory board and now work alongside our team of 50 engineers, designers, and data scientists in a downtown Boston office overlooking Fenway Park. They've been fortunate to work with many of the best athletes in the world. What they've discovered has amazed Will, and we talk about it all on today's show. Self quantification can transform your life and induce effects like positive behavior change, fitness improvements, injury reduction. Will believes that the data he's collecting on athletes is unprecedented, both in its sophistication and scale, and that no physiological studies have ever occurred on this magnitude. WHOOP benefits from the fact that athletes also have tangible performance data (wins/losses, batting average, time trials, etc) across sports. They want to share this data: the unbelievable correlations between physiology and performance; the approach to health monitoring and the different ways to interpret or action your body’s feedback. Beyond building a product that people love, Will and the team at WHOOP hope to advance human knowledge with our discoveries. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The key defining characteristics that set WHOOP apart, including skin conductivity, accelerometer data, and continuous HRV monitoring...[13:25] -Why WHOOP is the only company to measure the activity and fluctuations of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, particularly as it relates to recovery, training status, and training readiness...[13:57] -The actual hard data being collected by the WHOOP, and HRV, pulse oximetry, temperature, respiration, etc.)...[15:30 & 24:30] -Why the WHOOP uses a combination of PPG (photoplethysmography) sensors (4 LEDs and 1 Photodiode) along with 3-axis accelerometer, capacitive touch sensor, ambient temperature sensor...[18:17] -How coaches and trainers can use WHOOP to monitor the sleep, training and recovery status of a large number of athletes and clients...[20:00, 30:00 , 35:50 & 47:50] -Why the WHOOP has 90% sleep/wake accuracy compared to gold-standard sleep labs...[22:10] -How the WHOOP sleep coach automatically calculates sleep needed based on your sleep baseline, any sleep debt that has accumulated over the last few nights, and any naps taken for that day...[39:15] -The technology the WHOOP uses to tell you how much sleep you need and to give you a picture of when you should go to bed based on your habitual sleep efficiency and desired wake up time...[40:15] -Why athletes like Lebron James and Michael Phelps are using the WHOOP...[59:15] -And much more... Ep 798Pee Strips, Power Lungs & Pulse Oximeters: How To Flip The Switch On Your Body's Own Natural Ability To Heal Itself (& Little-Known Ways To Breathe Better).
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/breathepodcast In the past several months, I've taken a deep, deep dive into breath work. Sure, in the past years I've written articles on everything from combining ketosis, breath holds and freediving, to how to make your own hyperbaric "exercise with oxygen therapy" (EWOT) device, to Wim Hof style breathing for cold thermogenesis to underwater workouts with Laird Hamilton to making yourself high with holotropic breathwork to the use of fancy breath strips and "Turbine" devices to enhance nasal breathing during both exercise and sleep... ...but lately, I've been making a very concerted effort to consistently do deep nasal breathing, rhythmic breathing and breath hold tactics during walks, weight training sessions, road trips and beyond. And by concerted, I mean consistently, every day, until these forms of breathing become fully automatic. In her new book "Breathe: The Simple, Revolutionary 14-Day Program to Improve Your Mental and Physical Health" my guest Dr. Belisa Vranich explains why breathing is so crucial for optimizing brain and body performance, and she delves into one of the most comprehensive treatises of practical breathing tactics that I've ever read (the other best book on this topic is "The Oxygen Advantage" by Patrick McKeown, who I'm also getting on the podcast soon). She highlights the results she's seen in her research and in her own patients, including... Insomnia? Gone. Anxiety? Gone. All without medication. Unpleasant side effects from blood pressure pills? Gone. A cheap and effective way to combat cardiovascular disease, immune dysfunction, obesity, and GI disorders? Yes. Sounds too good to be true? Contemporary science confirms what generations of healers have observed through centuries of practice: Breath awareness can turn on the body’s natural abilities to prevent and cure illness. The mental and physical stresses of modern life, such as anxiety, frustration, sexual dysfunction, insomnia, high blood pressure, digestive woes, and immune dysfunction can all be addressed through conscious control of your breath. In addition, it can increase energy, accelerate healing, improve cognitive skills, and enhance mental balance. Yet most of us stopped breathing in the anatomically “right” way, the way to take advantage of these benefits, when we were four or five years old. We now mostly breathe in a way that is anatomically incongruous and makes for more illness. But in the book "Breathe", Dr. Vranich shows readers how to turn back the tide of stress and illness, and improve the overall quality of their life through a daily breathing workout. In a fascinating, straightforward, jargon-free exploration of how our bodies were meant to breathe, she delves into the ins and outs of proper breathing. By combining both anatomy and fitness with psychology and mindfulness, Dr. Vranich gives readers a way of solving health problems at the crux and healing themselves from the inside out. Breathe is an easy-to-follow guide to breathing exercises that will increase energy, help lose weight, and make you feel calmer and happier. Dr. Vranich is a clinical psychologist with over twenty years of experience, and she has spent the last decade dedicating herself to the study of breathing. She is the founder of The Breathing Class and has appeared in dozens of national media outlets, including Anderson Cooper, CNN, Fox, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, The Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, Men's Fitness and Huffington Post. She is also the former sports psychologist for Gold's Gym and columnist for Shape. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How to determine something called your "baseline breath"...[10:35] -The best biohacking gear that you can use to self quantify and test your breath...[24:45 & 28:10] -What percentage oxygen level you should look at when using an oximeter to check your blood oxygenation levels...[29:15] -The acid-alkaline relationship between something called "overbreathing" and craving junk foods...[19:20 & 34:40] -Why your breath hold time may not be that important (unless you're into freediving, spearfishing, shooting, golfing, surfing, surgery or tattoo artistry)...[38:00 & 42:00] -Why rock musicians have very strong vagus nerve stimulation...[52:20] -How breathwork detoxifies your body and moves lymph through your circulatory system...[57:30] -The $3000 device that Dr. Vranich swears by for full body massage and diaphragmatic stimulation...[64:45] -What Dr. Vranich thinks of devices like the Powerlung and the Elevation Training Mask...[70:50] -And much more! Ep 795Living Large: The Skinny Guy's Guide to No-Nonsense Muscle Building With Vince Del Monte.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/livinglarge Nine years ago, I sat slack-jawed in the crowd at an event called "Fitness Business Summit", listening to a massive, muscle-bound trainer on stage tell his story of creating an e-book that made millions of dollars online and helped hundreds of thousands of skinny guys across the globe sculpt their thin bodies into herculean, Adonis-like physiques. I was actually so inspired by this guy's story that I went on to create my own "e-product" - a training system for Ironman triathletes to cross the finish line of an Ironman triathlon with less than ten hours of training per week, and still have plenty of time left over for friends, family, hobbies and career. I called it "The Triathlon Dominator", and it was my first big training program that I ever sold online. In an odd collision of fitness worlds, I have suddenly reconnected with Mr. X via a brand new book I recently received in the mail: Living Large: The Skinny Guy's Guide to No-Nonsense Muscle Building. Formerly known as "Skinny Vinny", Vinny's real name is Vince Del Monte, and he now goes by the name "The Skinny Guy Savior". Vinny's new book is jam-packed with everything you need to quickly build 30 pounds of rock-solid, shredded muscle without dangerous bodybuilding drugs, expensive supplements, and long hours in the gym, and it's actually not written like most books of this nature are, with pure meat-headedness. Instead, this book is intelligently written, full of practical advice and during our discussion, you'll discover: -How Vince made the transition from skinny endurance athlete and collegiate runner to becoming muscle-building phenomenon...[16:15] -The extremely unconventional training program Vince's first bodybuilding mentor used...[18:40] -Vince and Ben's thoughts on steroids...[24:40] -Why Vince says "get lean to get big" and how fat can diminish your ability to build muscle, especially in response to a high protein meal...[27:25] -The three mechanisms via which muscles actually grow, and how to target each of the three mechanisms...[47:50] -How massage therapy or foam rolling can directly assist with muscle building, and why Vince is such a fan of a muscle activation technique called "MAT"...[55:05] -What science says about how much muscle one can really build in a month...[63:05] -The seven key oils Vince uses and why...[73:00] -And much more... Resources from this episode: -My interview with Vinny's wife Flavia "7 Essential Kitchen Items You’ve Never Heard Of But Need To Have." -Vince's new book: Living Large: The Skinny Guy's Guide to No-Nonsense Muscle Building -Photos of Vince's brother Michael's impressive muscle gain -Study: Anabolic sensitivity of postprandial muscle protein synthesis to the ingestion of a protein-dense food is reduced in overweight and obese young adults. -Podcast: “Dr. Two Fingers” Reveals His Teeth-Gritting, Body-Healing Secrets.“ Do you have questions, thoughts or feedback for Vince or me? Ep 794Why The Media & Supplement Companies Lie To You About Diets & Supplements (& What You Can Do About It).
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/examinepodcast I'm a voracious consumer of knowledge. On an average week, I read 3-5 books, listen to 15-20 podcasts, and read several dozen research articles. And one of my secrets to this hyperproductive digestion of information is through the use of services, websites, journals, newsletters and, well, "digests" that disseminate information into readily accessible bite-size pieces that allow me to cut through the clutter and quickly get to the main summaries, takeaways and actionable items from all the content. For example, I'm a huge fan of the book reviews produced by gentleman such as Derek Sivers and James Clear. In addition, I stay up to date with health, medical and science news via the Stone Hearth Newsletters, exercise and nutrition research via the website Suppversity, and, for general life knowledge, I'm a recent subscriber to the Farnham Street blog for staying up-to-date with the best recently published books and articles from around the web. And - for one of the most comprehensive exercise, diet, supplement resources I have ever accessed - I am a frequent visitor to the website Examine and their monthly publication The Examine Research Digest, which is produced by today's podcast guest: Kamal Patel. Kamal is the director of Examine.com, an independent and unbiased encyclopedia on supplementation and nutrition. He is a nutrition researcher with an MPH and MBA from Johns Hopkins University, and is on hiatus from a PhD in nutrition, in which he researched the link between diet and chronic pain. He has published peer-reviewed articles on vitamin D and calcium as well as a variety of clinical research topics, and in today's episode, you'll discover: -How supplement companies and the media manipulate science for their own benefits...[11:38 & 16:30] -Why Kamal thinks the "elimination diet" for nightshades is a hoax...[18:55] -The best way to know if a diet or supplement website is delivering you fake information...[29:35] -The truth about what they really feed lab rats and mice in high-fat diet studies...[31:35] -Why an extremely high percentage of the research released in medical journals is flawed or biased...[35:00] -The best way to quickly review an abstract without reading a full article, and red flags to look out for when reading an abstract...[44:50 & 48:30] -The top three most proven and researched supplements that just about everyone could benefit from...[54:56] -The surprising benefits of daily creatine intake...[61:50] -Why Kamal doesn't take fish oil, but Ben does, and how genetics should influence supplement intake...[65:35 & 68:35] -The two supplements most people most infatuated with that Kamal thinks have very low credibility...[72:15] -The most beneficial one-two combo stack you can take for daily mental performance...[77:45] -Why you should spread your vegetable intake throughout the day to maximize your nitrate exposure...[80:48] -And much more! Ep 79317 Ways I'm Detoxing My Body In 2017: A Special Solo Podcast Episode.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/detoxpodcas t I'm going to detox my entire body and brain, beginning Monday, January 9, 2017 (and you can listen to today's podcast episode to learn what the random, strange photo above has to do with this). Anyways, I'm not going to do just any ol' detox like putting cayenne pepper into a nasty concoction or pushing giant grocery shopping carts full of random herbs through the supermarket. These popular detoxes can actually release toxins from tissues such as fat cells and shove them into the brain, causing even more damage. Oops. That's a bad thing. Instead, I'm partnering up with one of the most brilliant detox minds on the face of the planet: the guy I interviewed in the podcast "The Most Effective Detox You’ve Never Heard Of (And Exactly How To Do It)." His name is Dr. Dan Pompa, and Dr. Dan is going to walk me through the entire brain and body detox program that he's studied and perfected for years. I'm then going to combine his proven detox formula with my own exercise and biohacking protocols so that I can completely clean up my body without losing fitness by doing only, say, hot yoga and trampolining for weeks and weeks. See, I don't want to come out of my detox having lost my muscle or having to huff and puff whenever I climb a flight of stairs, so I'm pulling out all my fitness tricks that allow me to sculpt my body while I detox, without actually causing adrenal fatigue issues or ruining the detox protocol. And I'm inviting YOU to join me. During today's solo podcast episode with yours truly, you'll discover: -Why most detoxification programs can severely damage your body and brain...[6:55] -What a "true cellular detox" is...[10:56] -How to detox your body using a "Prep Phase", a "Brain Phase" and a "Body Phase"...[17:53] -The 5 strategies I'm personally using to ensure I don't lose fitness or muscle during my detox...[20:52] -How fringe techniques like dry skin brushing, rebounding and infrared therapy can maximize the effectiveness of a detox...[29:00 - 39:45] -The exact workouts I'll be performing during my detox...[30:00] -Whether or not you should use the dietary strategy of ketosis during a detox...[46:00] -The best fasting strategy to use during a detox...[41:25] -How meditation can fit perfectly into a detox program...[41:38] -How oil pulling can assist with detox...[49:00] -Why fermented foods are crucial during a detox...[50:45] -The crazy, unique tea blends I'll be using to accelerate my detox and wean myself off coffee...[53:50] -And much more! https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/hairpodcast This is a special Premium audio episode. Click here to activate a Premium subscription to the BenGreenfieldFitness show and access this and over 300 additional hidden audios, videos, pdf's and more! The lady who cuts my hair must think I'm a freak. It seems like every time I visit her for a haircut, I'm politely requesting that she save several clumps of my hair clippings for me to place in a small envelope and mail to my friend Wendy Myers. Why am I mailing my hair? Because Wendy is the expert when it comes to something called "hair mineral analysis". And she doesn't stop there: she does urine and stool too, so I sent her that way last month, and she was able to reveal a host of health information we can find from our hair, our urine and our stool - all topics that we address on this podcast. Wendy is a functional diagnostic nutritionist (FDN), a certified holistic health coach (CHHC), and the founder of Liveto110. She attended the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York and has a degree in Entrepreneurship from the University of Southern California. She is certified in Hair Mineral Analysis for the purpose of designing programs for clients to correct their metabolism and body chemistry with customized targeted nutrient therapy. Wendy’s interest in nutrition began with the death of her father from esophageal cancer. Intuitively, she knew his chemo, radiation, and ten medications killed him prematurely. She vowed to find out what made him sick, why he died, what role medications played in his demise, and how she could avoid the same fate. The more Wendy learned, the more she realized that all the answers to health do not lie in our medical system. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why a lot of people say that the hair is really not a reflection of what's going on inside the body...[4:00] -How hair analysis actually works in terms of accuracy and lab testing...[6:25] -Why you need to look at mineral ratios and metal ratios when you do a hair tissue mineral analysis...[8:25] -Why Wendy thinks my "soil" is high in heavy metals...[15:45] -Why cooking in cast iron skillets can actually cause oxidation in the body...[23:02] -The problem with the way that most physicians do a urine test...[36:15] -What Wendy learned from my urine test in the "pre metals" and "post metals" results...[38:55] -What the Fukushima disaster in Japan is doing to people's metal levels of metals like cesium...[40:50] -How a stool metals test is different than a stool test for gut health...[50:15] -What Wendy learned from my stool test...[51:10] -And much more! Ep 786Decoding The Science Behind The Best Tasting Bone Broth On The Face Of The Planet.
https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/kettleandfire There's much more to bone broth than meets the eye. Take the bones for example. Killer bones make killer bone broth, but not all bones are created equal. Knuckle, patella, femur, and feet bones actually make the best broth, because these bones have been proven to contain the highest concentration of white and red stem-cell marrow, as well as the highest levels of collagen - one of the major benefits of drinking bone broth. The ingredients matter too. For example, you can achieve one of the most nourishing bone broths on the face of the planet when you combine marrow bones like those listed above (from pasture raised, grass-fed cows) with organic carrots, organic onions, organic celery, organic bay leaves, organic parsley, apple cider vinegar, a pinch of black peppercorn, sea salt, thyme and rosemary extract. Bone broth packaging matters too. Most bone broth companies aren’t USDA approved and require their bone broth to be frozen. This makes shipping a hassle (not to mention expensive!) makes the bone broth hard to store, and requires the heavy addition of preservatives, nasty additives and extra sodium or worse yet, packaging that is chock full of pathogens and germs. But this kind of information flies under the radar, so in today's podcast, my guest Justin Mares and I pull back the curtain on all things bone broth. Justin is the founder of Kettle & Fire bone broth, the first ever fresh, never frozen organic bone broth company, and during our discussion, you'll discover: -Why bone broth is supposed to form a gelatin when it's in your fridge, and why you shouldn't eat it if it doesn't "gel"...[9:52] -Whether there's any actual research on bone broth, or just on the individual components of it, like glycine or glucosamine or collagen...[14:50] -Which is the best type of broth: cow, chicken or fish...[22:37] -What the best kind of bones are for bone broth...[29:45] -The difference between red-cell marrow and white-cell marrow, and which you should consume...[31:45] -Why Kettle & Fire adds to their bone broth 100% grass-fed cows, organic carrots, organic celery, organic onions, organic bay leaves, organic apple cider vinegar, and reverse osmosis purified water...[34:10] -The best temperature for bone broth to keep nutrients from degrading...[36:50] -How can you actually get a packaged and shipped bone broth sent to your house without having a bunch of preservatives and artificial crap in it...[39:18] -Why you should stay far away from any grocery store bone broths...[43:00] -How bone broth can be used to lose weight, stay in ketosis, heal a leaky gut, fix constipation, and much more...[46:55] Resources from this episode: -Kettle & Fire Bone Broth (that link gets you $10 off any order, and additional discounts if you add more bone broth cartons to your cart). -The study Justin mentioned about glycine attenuating the insulin spike that comes with glucose ingestion. -Ben's bark tea recipe Do you have questions, thoughts or feedback for Justin or me? Ep 785How To Explore Your Body & Your Body's Electrical Charge In Unprecedented Detail: The Future Of Body & Brain Imaging.
Two months ago, I laid in a long, metal tube in a London hospital, staring at the blank white walls around me as the entire room buzzed and hummed with the sounds of high-tech analysis. I was getting a "Magnetic Resonance Imaging" procedure done - also known as an "MRI". But this was no typical MRI. I wasn’t injured and I wasn’t sick: I was simply immersed in a brand new form of cutting-edge image analysis - an ultra-fast MRI scan to deliver precise quantification of fat and muscle tissue within hours - designed to give me a complete analysis of the entire structure of my body and brain - from extremely accurate body fat percentage and body fat distribution of visceral and subcutaneous fat, to the nitty-gritty details of everything from lean muscle and the brain, and beyond. In today’s podcast, I'm going to take a deep dive into how you can do this type of advanced analysis of your body’s structure, the future of MRI testing for performance, longevity and aesthetics, and much more - including a very special appearance by Dr. Jack Kruse on how MRI's can be used to analyze something called the "redox potential" of the human body. My first guest in this episode is Marcus Foster. Marcus spent most of his career as a Product Manager for technology companies, including 8 years at Google. In November 2011, he was involved in a serious cycling accident, breaking four ribs and his collarbone. He started playing around with 3D volume renderings of the CT scan that was done of his thorax as a result of the accident. He was blown away by how beautiful the human body looks on the inside. A year later he got knocked off his bike again, this time breaking his wrist, leading to another CT scan. The next year he was diagnosed with a tumor in his head and had to have a series of MRI scans. While he was gradually collecting imagery of different parts of his body, it seemed difficult to scale this model. In 2014, Marcus left Google and started Klarismo with the goal of making medical imaging more accessible to consumers as a means to explore and understand their own bodies. My second guest in this episode, Dr. Jack Kruse, is a respected neurosurgeon and CEO of Optimized Life, a health and wellness company dedicated to helping patients avoid the healthcare burdens we typically encounter as we age. He is currently in private practice in the Gulf South. As a neurosurgeon, Dr. Kruse’s research has been published in respected dental and medical journals. His popular blog, JackKruse.com, gets over 250,000 unique worldwide visitors per month from countries like Australia, Germany, Russia, and Zambia (Africa). During our discussion, you’ll discover: -The series of horrific cycling accidents and eventually a tumor that led Marcus to delve into the fascinating world of CT scanning and MRI scanning...[10:45] -The little-known medical condition that can lead to low testosterone in men, and how you can find out if you have it...[18:20] -How something called a "Klarismo" scan is different than any other form of MRI...[24:12] -Whether MRI's are dangerous at all, especially in terms of radiation or exposure to "dirty electricity"...[25:30] -How you can find out the size of your brain, and the link between that and intelligence...[35:00] -What you can actually do with data that shows your precise fat and muscle distribution...[38:07] -The future of MRI testing, and how you can actually determine the positive and negative charges within tissue...[45:00] -What exactly "redox potential" is and what an MRI can tell you about your body's redox potential...[58:10] -Why Jack Kruse thinks Ben's tattoos have deleteriously affected his redox potential...[71:40] -And much more! Ep 78442 Different Ways To Build A Better Brain, The Problem With Modern Smart Drugs, Hacking Your Neurons & More.
My guest on today's podcast believes there's a big problem in the field of nootropics, smart drugs and cognitive enhancement: namely that the entire movement has followed some pretty extreme reductionist tendencies. When it comes to popping pills and using biohacks and self-quantification to make your body and brain smarter, research has indeed proliferated. There is a dizzying plethora of scientific findings focused on individual neurotransmitters, mechanisms, parts of the neurotransmission cycle, cell walls, receptor sites, brain/blood flow, and hundreds of other isolated variables. In other words, there are lots of parts and plenty of “findings” and “mechanisms.” But to date, there exists no prevailing meta-theory of the complex interactions that make up the whole of cognitive enhancement. Many various disconnected insights have so far fallen short of addressing the complex dynamics of all the interacting parts. For this reason, most nootropic, smart drug and brain biohacking products are developed to narrowly optimize one aspect of cognitive capability, only to have unexpected drawbacks, deleterious side effects and impacts on other areas. By performing a principled meta-analysis and synthesis of existing research, we can better understand the complex dynamics and emergent homeostatic relationships within the brain and from these kinds of insights we can yield a truly advanced complex meta-theory of cognitive enhancement. Daniel Schmachtenberger, my guest on this podcast, wants to do just this. Daniel began seriously studying health and neurology when he became afflicted with neurological and autoimmune illnesses that had no known solutions in either allopathic or complementary medicine. The insights that lead to his healing came from developing a new model for understanding physiology and pathology, which he then applied to helping many people address various forms of complex illness and optimize their capabilities beyond their previous healthy baselines. Daniel was the academic dean for a college of mind-body medicine and has consulted for many cutting edge integrative doctors and medical clinics to help find novel solutions for complex cases. He created and ran a cutting edge think tank developing complex systems solutions for environmental and social issues, and has directed a transdisciplinary group of scholars on a philosophy of mind project addressing core questions of mind / brain interface and developed what he calls "an axiomatic reformulation for the epistemology of neuroscience". He has a significant background with and love for psychedelics, nootropics, meditation, depth psychology, and all effective tools for evolving states and stages of consciousness and evolving the human experience. Daniel focuses in bringing together the best scientific research on each individual mechanism and pathway supporting cognitive development, and integrating them into a whole systems view, a complex framework of integrative neuroscience and one of the most comprehensive nootropic stacks ever made called "Qualia". During our discussion, you'll discover: -What a "dream nootropic" would look like if it were to target every single component of cognitive enhancement...[16:55 & 68:45] -How nootropics can go beyond an acute effect and actually chronically change your brain structure or "wiring", including neuron and synapse development, increased mitochondrial ATP, healthier cell structures and increased neural complexity...[21:00 & 49:30] -How you can actually induce the creation of new brain stem cells to heal things like traumatic brain injury, excitotoxicity and oxidative damage to the brain...[24:54] -Two easy ways to test how your central nervous system and memory recall is responding to certain compounds you consume...[27:45] -My personal experience with the "God pill" that Daniel developed...[42:45] -What makes something a "nootropic" compound vs. just a nutrient or a vitamin or a smart drug...[47:00 & 59:35] -The little-known substance know as the "love drug" that can increase euphoria and empathy...[50:18] -A compound that can be bound to caffeine to cause caffeine to last longer without a crash...[52:20] -The little-known effects a nootropic can have that you may not know about, such as decreased tendency to procrastinate, increased stress resilience, lucid dreaming, and beyond...[55:20 ] -How Vitamin D delivered in a form called "Microencapsulated Cholecalciferol" can act on specific brain targets...[61:25] -Which form of magnesium is best for neural targeting...[74:55] -Why it's absolutely crucial that you include something called "choline donors" when you consume a nootropic...[78:00] -The actual clinical research behind the Qualia formulation that Daniel helped to develop, and why it must be taken as a 1-2 combo...[82:25] -Whether this stuff safe to take if you compete in sports sanctioned by organization such as WADA, USADA, the Olympics, etc...[86:35] -And much more! Ep 780Mushrooms 101: Everything You Need To Know About The Psilocybin Psychedelics That Are Taking The Health World By Storm.
This is a special Premium audio episode. Click here to activate a Premium subscription to the BenGreenfieldFitness show and access this and over 300 additional hidden audios, videos, pdf's and more! Psychedelic drugs such as MDMA (AKA "Ecstacy") LSD and Psilocybin (AKA “magic” mushrooms) are very likely going to be the next set of drugs after marijuana to be destigmatized and potentially legalized, not necessarily because people are "partying more", but instead largely due to research going back to the 1950s which has shown that these drugs have a significant positive effect on those with depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Psychedelics are supposedly able to disintegrate entrenched or destructive ways of thinking in people who have depression, anxiety and PTSD. And brain imaging has indeed shown that in the brains of PTSD patients who took MDMA, their primitive fear center responses shrunk while their rational thought processes overrode them — the opposite of how their brains normally function. Even Silicon Valley executives are now taking microdoses of LSD to enhance creativity and productivity (a typical dose of LSD - enough to make a person hallucinate or trip - about 10 micrograms of LSD, and a microdose is about 1/10 of that dose). Rick Doblin, founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), claims people who microdose feel more energetic and insightful but don't necessarily see the face of God inside their water coolers. Just as with marijuana, I suspect we will continue to see the destigmatization of psychedelics if their proven health or cognitive benefits outweigh the prejudice against them. As more scientific data emerges on these drugs, they will probably become mainstream, if not for your average person, then definitely in a controlled, therapeutic setting by licensed professionals. So if you're not in-the-know about psychedelics, you should be. Enter today's guest: Dr. William Richards. Dr. Richards (Bill) is a psychologist in the Psychiatry Department of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Bayview Medical Center, where he and his colleagues have been pursuing research with psilocybin, the active molecule in the so-called “sacred mushrooms”, for the past 16 years. His graduate degrees include M.Div. from Yale Divinity School, S.T.M. from Andover-Newton Theological School and Ph.D. from Catholic University, as well as studies with Abraham Maslow at Brandeis University and with Hanscarl Leuner at Georg-August University in Göttingen, Germany, where his involvement with psychedelic research originated in 1963. From 1967 to 1977, he pursued psychotherapy research with LSD, DPT, MDA and psilocybin at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, including protocols designed to investigate the promise of entheogens in the treatment of alcoholism, severe neuroses, narcotic addiction and the psychological distress associated with terminal cancer, and also their use in the training of religious and mental-health professionals. From 1977-1981, he was a member of the psychology faculty of Antioch University in Maryland. His publications began in 1966 with “Implications of LSD and Experimental Mysticism,” coauthored with Walter Pahnke. His latest book, Sacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experiences has just been released by Columbia University Press, and is described as "the first well-documented, sophisticated account of the effect of psychedelics on biological processes, human consciousness, and revelatory religious experiences". During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Richards personally uses psilocybin and other psychedelic compounds in his own life...[6:00 & 28:20] -Why is it that research into psychedelic drugs seems to be growing in popularity, and why it waned in the first place...[7:00 & 18:00] -Whether wandering through a cow's field and picking mushrooms from dung is any different than what is being used in lab research...[22:50] -What mushrooms have to do with sacred geometry, and why the kaleidoscope colors or visions one sees when on higher doses of psilocybin are related to these geometries...[41:50] -Where you can "source" or grow your own psilocybin if you want to try it...[49:50] -How you can combine psilocybin with other compounds to either increase or decrease their effect...[52:00] -Psychedelics that Bill thinks "fly under the radar" but that more people should know about...[54:00] -And much more! Ep 779Shattering World Swim Records On 25-Piece Fried Chicken Buckets, Climbing Mountains While Eating Defatted, Vegan, Grass-Fed, Argentinian Liver Anhydrate & Much More.
I first met today's podcast guest when he sent me a bottle of strange pills in the mail. Normally, I would toss such a bottle into my pantry or garage with all the other random powders, oils, capsules, pills, lotions and creams that often show up at my house... ...but this bottle intrigued me. Along with echinacea and beet root extract, the bottle contained a bunch of other stuff I'd never heard of. Stuff like "Aphanizomenon Flos-Aquae". "Defatted, Vegan, Grass Fed Argentinian Liver Anhydrate". A version of Cordyceps with the name "Sinesis". So I called the guy who sent it to me and asked him what it was for. It turns out that he, and this bottle, are far from normal. His name is Craig Dinkel, and on today's podcast, you'll discover: -How Craig went from almost drowning in the pool to being one of the fastest swimmers in the world... [8:30] -How Craig cut 7 seconds off his 100-meter time while swimming in highschool...[14:40] -Why Craig took bee pollen and royal jelly while training for the Olympic swim team...[22:20] -The fitness strategies Craig used to train the celebrity musicians he worked with...[25:45] -The training Craig used to switch from swim performance to mountaineering...[49:00] -How echinacea can increase red blood cell count just as much as the illegal performance-enhancing drug EPO...[69:26] -The fascinating new research on the ability of beet extract to turn white storage fat into calorie-burning brown fat...[68:30] -How high amounts of desiccated liver increased time-to-exhaustion in the lab by over 750%...[71:42] -The rare fungal extract from larvae that can cause your body to produce ATP, even in the absence of calories...[67:00] -And much more! Ep 778Why Your Heart Is Not A Pump (& What Most Doctors Don't Know About The True Cause Of Heart Disease).
I first introduced you to Dr. Thomas Cowan in the podcast episode released a few weeks ago entitled "How (& Why) To Eat More Vegetables, Why A Plant Is Like An Upside-Down Human, Little-Known Superfood Plants & More!" In that episode, you learn how when Dr. Cowan was a 20-year-old Duke grad-student, bright, skeptical, and already disillusioned with industrial capitalism - he joined the Peace Corps in the mid-1970s for a two-year tour in Swaziland. There, he encountered the work of Rudolf Steiner and Weston A. Price - two men whose ideas would fascinate and challenge him for decades to come. Both drawn to the art of healing and repelled by the way medicine was―and continues to be―practiced in the United States, Cowan returned from Swaziland, went to medical school, and established a practice in New Hampshire and, later, San Francisco. For years, as he raised his three children, suffered the setback of divorce, and struggled with what we didn't really talk much about in that previous podcast: a heart condition. He was intrigued by the work of Price and Steiner and, in particular, with Steiner’s provocative claim that the heart is not a pump. Determined to practice medicine in a way that promoted healing rather than compounded ailments, Cowan dedicated himself to understanding whether Steiner’s claim could possibly be true. And if Steiner was correct, what, then, is the heart? What is its true role in the human body? In his new book "Human Heart, Cosmic Heart: A Doctor's Quest to Understand, Treat, and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease", which is a deeply personal, rigorous, and riveting account of his own struggle with heart disease, Dr. Cowan offers up a daring claim... ...not only was Steiner correct that the heart is not a pump, but our understanding of heart disease - with its origins in the blood vessels - is completely wrong. And this gross misunderstanding, with its attendant medications and risky surgeries, is the reason heart disease remains the most common cause of death worldwide. In today's episode, Dr. Cowan presents a new way of understanding the body’s most central organ. He offers a new look at what it means to be human and how we can best care for ourselves―and one another. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The strange root vegetable (which you probably haven't heard of) that Dr. Cowan had for breakfast before our interview...[7:56] -Dr. Cowan's own heart struggles that caused him to have a heartbeat of over 200 beats per minute while playing basketball...[9:20] -Why it is physically impossible for the heart to be able to pump blood through the body in the way that you (and your doctor) have learned...[13:25 & 15:25] -How the way that blood flows through your body is actually quite similar to the way that water flows through a giant, tall tree...[28:45] -What a "chestahedron" shape is, why is the exact shape of your heart, and how it creates a very unique vortex inside your chest....[40:35] -How I personally structure my family's water in a way extremely similar to the way that the heart structures and "spirals" your blood...[42:30] -Why most doctors don't know about this concept of the heart not being a pump...[45:50] -Why coronary angiograms, bypass surgery and stents don't work...[54:00] -A strange Brazilian plant molecule called "Gstrophanthin" and why Dr. Cowan talks about it in the book...[66:50] -How to use fats, oils, vitamin K, parasympathetic nervous system activators and compression therapy to drastically lower your risk of a heart attack...[70:15] -The single biggest key to preventing heart disease...[76:20] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -Human Heart, Cosmic Heart: A Doctor's Quest to Understand, Treat, and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease -My interview on structured water "Is All Water The Same" with Dr. Gerald Pollack -The whole house structured water filter Ben uses to create a "vortex" for his drinking water -The NatureBeat heart rate variability system Ben uses every morning to measure his nervous system -The Strophansus extract / ouabain Dr. Cowan mentions -Organic emu oil -Vitamin D/K2 blend -The Normatec recovery compression boots that Ben wears Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Dr. Cowan or I? At last year's Biohackers’ Summit in London, I met an intriguing 65 year old man named Veli-Jussi Jalkanen. T his guy goes by the nickname "Vessi", and he is one of the most physically talented older men I've ever met in my life. He competes in several sports on a national and competitive level, including shooting, military 3-skill sport, diving and sprinting. He also rides horses, plays tennis both left-handed and right-handed, swims, skis, skin-dives, walks extremely long distances and swing dances. The guy can crank out 25 pullups, speaks multiple languages, owns several multinational corporations and looks like he's about 40 years old. Velli's primary business is the Finnish company "Salli Systems" which develops ergonomically friendly furniture based on some very unique sitting concepts, like his "Salli Saddle Chair" (a unique seat modeled after horse-riding techniques) and electrically adjustable tables with elbow and wrist support. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Vessi only spends about 10% of his day in a standing position, and what he does the rest of the time...[7:45] -How a desk can automatically detect whether you're typing or reading...[8:50] -How a saddle chair allows you to sit but "fools" your body into thinking you are standing...[10:50] -Why clothing is an unfriendly nuisance to your body (and the sitting-friendly clothing that Vessi uses)...[16:30] -How Vessi gets away with not wearing underwear all day long...[18:45] -Why you really don't need a backrest behind your chair...[23:10] -How Vessi taught himself how to play tennis with both his right and left hand...[27:20] -The 6 toys that Vessi keeps in his office to stay fit...[35:30] -Why Velli eats so many berries, and only one specific type of grain...[43:00] -How Vessi healed himself of osteoarthritis...[50:25] -And much more! Ep 775Blood Oxygenation Tips, Negative Calorie Foods, Self-Testing Your Adrenals & More: Yuri Elkaim's 7 Commandments Of Energy
Your blood is a river. Food shouldn't drain your energy, period. Your adrenal glands need to be stressed strategically. Eating less can give you more energy if you do it the right way. Anything that clutters your head strips you of energy and productivity. Movement is life, excess healing and repair inhibits that movement, and stagnation (AKA rigor mortis) is death. Increasing energy is synonymous with increasing fertility, health and longevity, so if you decode an energy increase, the effects are exponential. These are just bits and pieces of Yuri Elkaim's "7 Commandments of Energy" found in his All-Day Energy Book, and in today's podcast we take a deep dive into the commandments that Yuri claims can double your energy in seven days. Yuri is a nutrition, fitness, and fat loss expert and the NYT bestselling author of The All Day Energy Diet and The All-Day Fat Burning Diet. He is a former pro soccer player turned health crusader, and he's most famous for helping people who've tried everything to lose weight and get in great shape, with little success, finally achieve breakthrough results. He is on a mission to empower 10 million people to greater health by 2018 by making fit and healthy simple again. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why all Yuri's hair and eyebrows fell out...[9:00] -The little-known foods or lifestyle practices most notorious for limiting oxygen carrying capacity of blood...[17:50] -Why chlorella and Vitamin B12 match the structure of your blood's hemoglobin...[12:12] -Why it's a myth that your diet can't change your blood pH, and the specific foods that will make your body more acidic...[26:55] -The simple protocol that allows you to determine exactly how much hydrochloric acid you need to take prior to a meal to assist with digestion...[52:30] -How you can easily test your adrenals at home with two dollar flashlight...[66:40] -The surprising billions of probiotics you should really be including in your diet...[69:45] -And much more! Ep 771How (& Why) To Eat More Vegetables, Why A Plant Is Like An Upside-Down Human, Little-Known Superfood Plants & More!
It's not often I read a book that is less than 100 pages long and I fold over and highlight nearly every page. But that was indeed the case when I read the book "How (& Why) To Eat More Vegetables", a book with a very simple title but a very wide range of practical plant-eating information I've never seen published elsewhere, including little-known superfood plants, why humans are like an upside down plant, how to make extremely nutritionally dense vegetable powders and much more. The book was written by the guest of this podcast: Dr. Tom Cowan. Dr. Cowan discovered the work of the two men who would have the most influence on his career while teaching gardening as a Peace Corps volunteer in Swaziland, South Africa. He read "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" by Weston A. Price, as well as Rudolf Steiner’s work on biodynamic agriculture. These events inspired him to pursue a medical degree and he graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 1984. After his residency in Family Practice at Johnson City Hospital in Johnson City, New York, he set up an anthroposophical medical practice in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Dr. Cowan relocated to San Francisco in 2003. Dr. Cowan has served as vice president of the Physicians Association for Anthroposophical Medicine and is a founding board member of the Weston A. Price Foundation™. During his career he has studied and written about many subjects in medicine. These include nutrition, homeoathy, anthroposophical medicine and herbal medicine. He is the principal author of the book The Fourfold Path to Healing and is the co-author of The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care. Ep 768The Art Of Hacking Your Brain Without Smart Drugs: A Podcast With Immersive Journalist, Adventurer & Author Neil Strauss.
Neil Strauss is an American author, journalist and ghostwriter, perhaps best known for his controversial best-selling book The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists, in which he describes his experiences in the seduction community in an effort to become a "pick-up artist." He is a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and also writes regularly for The New York Times. But Neil's interests go far beyond "seduction". For example, in his book Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life, he spent three years surviving amongst survivalists, tax-dodgers, billionaire businessmen, and the government itself, and the book was hailed by Rolling Stone as an "escape plan" for the current world crisis. When I visited Neil's home in Malibu to record this interview, I found myself immersed with Neil in everything from advanced virtual reality game playing, crazy underwater pool workouts, surfing with internet celebrities and drinking "billion-dollar smoothies", all of which you'll hear about in this podcast recorded from Neil's kitchen. During our discussion, which gets slightly explicit at times, you'll discover: -Exactly how to do an underwater pool workout like Laird Hamilton...[7:25] -The ingredients of the "billion dollar smoothie"...[12:50] -Why Neil and I were surfing with internet celebrity Cameron Dallas prior to recording the episode...[16:20] -Why Neil is so interested in advanced virtual reality gaming...[18:20] -Why Neil checked himself into sex addiction therapy...[22:30] -Neil's uncomfortable volley of questions to me in which I potentially throw my Mom and Dad "under the bus"...[36:40 & 55:00] -Neil's three steps for "rewiring" your brain without the use of smart drugs or biohacks...[45:30 & 63:00] -Why Neil paid to get thrown in the back of a trunk with his hands ziptied together...[77:30] -And much more! Ep 767A New Way To Get Unstoppable Conditioning, Maximum Strength, Speed, Power & Muscle...In 3 Hours Per Week (Or Less).
On several recent podcasts, I've mentioned that (especially when I've been traveling and have limited equipment), one of my key, go-to workouts is a program known as "Neuro-Mass", which I now consider to be one of fastest methods for developing power and strength with little more than your own bodyweight and, optionally, a kettlebell or two, adding slabs of functional muscle to a lean frame quickly, and building muscle recruitment and explosiveness in a smart, systematic way. Neuro-Mass gives you the exact protocols you need to create an impressive, functional, athletic physique, combining the best kettlebell resistance and bodyweight exercises with a new cutting edge training method called "Neuro-Sets". These Neuro-Sets, comprised of grinds, isometrics and explosive movements, create rapid physique transformation. While most training programs only focus on one approach to create growth or lean muscle or power or strength, Neuro-Mass uses multiple stressors in a single workout to create a better and smarter body, developing pure power combined with amazing capacity for sustained and continual strength output. The entire program was designed by this episode's podcast guest: Jon Bruney. Jon's exploits as Guinness World Record-holding strongman have been immortalized in Ripley’s Believe it or Not and seen on NBC’s: America’s got Talent, The Today Show and TruTv’s Guinness World Records Unleashed. A true renaissance man in the realm of strength-development, Jon is a best-selling author, world-class trainer, coach, motivational speaker, strongman, and pastor. Jon’s work with competitive athletes includes Olympians and NFL players. He is the author of the best-seller “Neuro-Mass – The Ultimate System for Spectacular Strength”. He also writes a training series called “Foundations” which is featured in MILO, widely considered the world’s most prestigious strength training journal. As co-owner of Submit Strength Equipment, Jon has been responsible for the design of numerous pieces of cutting-edge training equipment now in use around the world. Jon is also a veteran of numerous trainer certification courses. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why one of Jon's favorite tricks is to attach two Harley-Davidson motorcycles to his body...[11:15] -How to start each set that you do with something called a "grind" to stimulate maximum muscle recruitment...[17:40] -The best way to breathe if you are lifting a weight to maximize muscle tension...[21:45] -Why Jon is such a fan of the Powerlung, and also putting a paper bag over your face...[24:10] -A surprising training trick you can do with a yoga block while you are sprinting...[33:45] -Why you should create "controlled trauma" in a muscle during an exercise...[36:40] -The reason most people do isometric exercises like a wall squat the wrong way, and how you should actually do it...[43:00] -How to exhaust a muscle completely with nothing more than a bath towel...[44:25] -And much more! Ep 766How Your Computer Monitor Is Slowly Killing Your Eyes, And What You Can Do About It.
Do you ever get headaches after working on a computer for a long time? Eye strain? Mild irritation? Brain fog? It's not all in your head. See, just like most televisions, computer monitors "flicker". Monitors have been flickering for many years, but most people don't realize this because the flicker is invisible. However, the flicker is still very hard on your eyes and is just one of the computer monitor issues responsible for the growing epidemic of near-sightedness and myopia - also known as "computer vision syndrome". Even fancy, modern PC LCD monitors are not flicker-free, even though many people think they are. These LCD monitors originally started out by using something called CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) as a backlight source for the monitor, but in recent years manufacturers have shifted to using LEDs (light emitting diodes). If you have one of those thin monitors, then you probably have a LCD monitor with LED, and if you are unsure, you can check the model number on the backside of the monitor and Google it. The use of LED has numerous benefits, including lower power consumption, far fewer toxic substances due to the absence of the cathode and some fantastic picture quality advantages, but along with all these benefits come potential eyestrain issues that can damage and destroy your eyes over the long term. See, when your monitor is set to maximum brightness, the LEDs are glowing at full 100% strength. If you reduce the brightness setting in the menu, the LEDs need to omit less light, and this is accomplished by inserting small breaks, or pauses (flickers!) in which the LEDs turn off for a very short, nearly invisible time. When you reduce the brightness setting of your monitor even more, the breaks become longer. This creates a frustrating catch-22: a bright screen can strain your eyes, and the flicker created by a less bright screen can also strain your eyes. Compared to old-school CCFL monitors, the newer LED-based monitors carry the greatest risk of giving you eyestrain, tired eyes or nasty headaches. You can read more about this issue in the article "LED Monitors can cause headaches due to flicker". My guest on today's podcast has figured out how to tackle this issue, and has invented a special piece of software called "Iris" that controls the brightness of the monitor with the help of your computer's video card, allows you to have adequate brightness without the flicker, and even automatically adjusts your computer monitor's settings based on the sun's position wherever you happen to be in the world. His name is Daniel Georgiev, and he is a 20 year old computer programmer from Bulgaria. Before he learned to code, Daniel was a rower in his country's national team for more than 5 years, and participated in the 2012 World Rowing Junior Championship. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Daniel got kicked off his soccer team, and within two years qualified for the Bulgarian National Team in rowing...[11:20] -Why Daniel programmed his computer monitor to freeze and stop his work every 30 minutes...[19:45] -Why Daniel doesn't like the computer program "Flux" for decreasing blue light on your monitor...[21:45] -The link between color "temperature" and the amount of blue light a computer monitor creates...[29:52] -How to convert a glossy computer monitor screen into a matte computer monitor screen...[33:50] -Why you should use font rendering technologies to change the type of font you are looking at when you read on a computer monitor...[39:00] -How to automatically invert colors on a screen or change the screen to grayscale when you are working to reduce eye strain and improve your ability to sleep...[46:25] -Why you blink 66% less when you are working on a computer (and why yawning when you work on your computer is actually quite important)...[50:00 & 54:50] -How to set up your computer monitor to force you to take automatic "Pomodoro" breaks, and get instant reminders for eye exercises, neck exercises and back exercises...[56:10] -And much more! Ep 765The Mysterious Kuwait Muscle-Building Phenomenon, The Too-Much-Protein Myth, Anabolic Triggering Sessions & More With The MindPump Podcast Crew.
Meet the guys from MindPump podcast. The hosts - who traveled all the way up from San Jose to descend upon my my house in Spokane, Washington to record this podcast - claim to "pull back the curtain on the mythology, snake oil and pseudo-science that pervades the fitness industry and present science-backed solutions that result in increased muscular development and performance while simultaneously emphasizing health." Take a gander at these fellas...as they seem to have the body composition and transformation equation pretty well figured out. They include... Sal DiStefano... Sal was 14 years old when he touched his first weight and from that moment he was hooked. Growing up asthmatic, frequently sick and painfully skinny, Sal saw weightlifting as a way to change his body and his self-image. In the beginning, Sal’s body responded quickly to his training but then his gains slowed and then stopped altogether. Not one to give up easily, he began reading every muscle building publication he could get his hands on to find ways to bust through his plateau. He read Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, Mentzer’s Heavy Duty, Kubrick’s Dinosaur Training, and every muscle magazine he could find; Weider’s Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Iron Man and even Muscle Media 2000. Each time he read about a new technique or methodology he would test it out in the gym. At age 18 his passion for the art and science of resistance training was so consuming that he decided to make it his profession and become a personal trainer. By 19 he was managing health clubs and by 22 he owned his own gym. After 17 years as a personal trainer he has dedicated himself to bringing science and TRUTH to the fitness industry. Adam Schafer... Adam Schafer is a IFBB men's physique Pro and fitness expert. Adam made his entrance into the fitness world 14 years ago and has continued to send shock waves throughout the community ever since. He is a man of many talents who wears many hats. He is first and foremost a certified fitness expert who has an insatiable desire to help people in need of major lifestyle changes and daily accountable motivation. He is also incredibly driven entrepreneur and business minded individual with a vision that continually challenges his colleagues and peers to think bigger and achieve more. Justin Andrews... Justin has an incredible passion to disrupt the personal training industry and create ground breaking programs and tools that fitness professionals and clients alike can benefit from. The fitness industry in general needs a massive face lift to speak more to the generation growing up with a more advanced technology tool kit. Justin’s approach is to create programs that utilize technology as it advances and cut through the millions of options people face everyday when seeking specific information relating to their fitness needs. The great thing about where we are today is how easy it is to access information, the bad part about accessing all this information is how much misinformation is out there to weed through. As a health and fitness professional with a proven track record here in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Justin Andrews will keep working tirelessly to keep people educated and connected to quality personal trainers long into the future. Doug Egge... Doug received his first gym membership as a gift from his dad when he was 16 years old. Rocky III had just come out and he was determined to build a body like Stallone. It never happened. Despite following the advice of muscle magazines and busting his butt in the gym, Doug saw minimal gains over the next 30 years. Then he was introduced to Sal Di Stefano by his chiropractor who recommended he work with Sal to eliminate muscle imbalances that were causing lower back issues. Sal's unique approach, often 180 degrees different from what Doug had read in books and magazines, produced more results in a matter of months than he had experienced in the 30 years prior. Doug with an extensive marketing and media production background, recognized Sal's unique gift and perspective was missing from the fitness world and suggested that they should join forces. Doug and Sal have since produced life-altering programs such as the No BS 6-Pack Formula and MAPS Anabolic. Doug is very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Adam and Justin as Producer of MindPump. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why bodybuilders are traveling to Kuwait and mysteriously coming back with 20+ pounds of extra muscle...[17:00] -The truth about underground muscle building supplements like SARMS, Clomid, injectable testosterones and more...[23:20 & 30:10] -Why old-timey strength training protocols could be the best way to build strength compared to new-school bodybuilding protocols...[34:00 & 41:00] -How to do an "anabolic triggering session"...[52:00] -Why you need far less protein than you think...[59:30] -The biggest myths in the fitness industry...[67:40] -And much more... Ep 764The Best Time Of Day To Exercise, Have Sex, Take Supplements, Read A Book, Take A Nap & More!
Do you know your chronotype? Until two weeks ago, I didn't. Turns out, I'm a "lion" chronotype (with a strong tendency to delve into "bear" chrono-typedness). You might be a wolf, in which case you should try working out at 6:00pm and not 6:00am. An early morning run for you might feel like punishment, while an early evening run will provide an enjoyable pick-me-up. Or maybe you're a lion, in which case having a wine, beer or cocktail between 5:30pm and 7:30pm will minimize the chances of sleep disruption from alcohol. Or perhaps you're a dolphin, which means you should schedule any big presentations or work tasks for around 4:00pm, when you're most awake, most alert, and even most confident. You could also be a bear, in which case shifting dinner from 6:00pm to 7:30pm can actually accelerate fat loss and stave off late-night snacking. Interesting, eh? You'll find all the science, the studies, and the facts behind this type of new chronotyping research in the new book "The Power of When: Discover Your Chronotype-and the Best Time to Eat Lunch, Ask for a Raise, Have Sex, Write a Novel, Take Your Meds, and More". A growing body of research actually proves there is a right time to do just about everything, specifically based on your biology and hormones. As Dr. Michael Breus - the author and today's podcast guest - presents in his groundbreaking new book The Power of When, working with your body's inner clock for maximum health, happiness, and productivity can be easy, exciting, fun and pay off big dividends. For example, since reading this book, I've even cut out caffeinated morning coffee and replaced it with decaf, started prioritizing morning and afternoon sex instead of evening sex, and shifted my fiction-based creative writing from 8:00pm to 8:00am. The Power of When presents a unique program for getting back in sync with your natural rhythm by making minor changes to your daily routine based on your unique "chronotype". In the book, after you've taken Dr. Breus's "Bio-Time Quiz" to figure out your chronotype (e.g. are you a Bear, Lion, Dolphin or Wolf?), you then find out the best time to do over 50 different activities, from when to exercise to have sex to take supplements to ask for a raise to eat breakfast to take a nap and much more. So you can consider this book the ultimate "lifehack". Dr. Breus, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist, a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a Fellow of The American Academy of Sleep Medicine. With a specialty in Sleep Disorders, Dr. Breus he is one of only 163 psychologists in the world with his credentials and distinction. In addition to his private practice, where he treats athletes and celebrities alike, Dr. Breus also trains other sleep doctors and consults with major airlines, hotel chains, mattress manufacturers and retailers to provide the optimum sleep experience for their customers. For example, an audio relaxation CD he designed for the Crowne Plaza Hotels helps millions of people fall asleep each year, and for over 14 years Dr. Breus has served as the Sleep Expert for WebMD and frequently pens "Sleep Matters" a column in WebMD magazine. He also writes The Insomnia Blog, which appears regularly on WebMD, The Huffington Post, The Dr. Oz Blog, Psychology Today, MedPedia, Organized Wisdom, Travora Travel, and Furniture Today, and has been interviewed on CNN, Oprah, The View, Anderson, and The Doctors and The Dr. OZ Show. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why I'm now having sex in the morning and coffee in the afternoon...[10:35] -The fascinating history of chronotyping and chronobiology...[11:50] -Why it is that guys like Tim Ferriss and Tai Lopez operate extremely well in the wee hours of the night...[18:30] -Why Thomas Edison created the most disruptive event in the history of bio-time...[32:10] -Whether chronotyping is based on scientific research or simply cute, easy-to-remember animals...[30:25] -When the best time of day is to drink alcohol and to drink coffee based on your chronotype...[25:40 & 27:20] -A simple, scientific, biological way to determine chronotype based on a seven dollar piece of home health equipment...[31:35] -When the best time to have sex is, why and how to "sync up" sex times with your partner based on their chronobiology...[35:35] -When the best time of day is for cardiovascular exercise vs. yoga vs. weight training...[39:25 & 47:20] -How your chronobiology can affect when you should take supplements or medications...[22:00] -Dr. Breus's most potent and effective jet lag tips...[51:00] -Why Daylight Savings Time day is the #1 day that traffic accidents occur...[59:50] -And much more! They were all produced by today's podcast guest: Rick Rubin, the American record producer and former co-president of Columbia Records. In 2007, MTV called Rick "the most important producer of the last 20 years", and the same year he appeared on Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World list. Rapper Dr. Dre has stated that Rubin is, "hands down, the dopest producer ever that anyone would ever want to be, ever." But Rick has a personal passion outside of music that many people don't know about... ...health, nutrition, fitness and biohacking. And in this episode, in which Rick and I sit on his back porch, watching a relaxing sunset after a hard morning of Laird Hamilton's pool workout, we have an intense discussion about veganism vs. Paleo, Rick's weight loss journey, and much more. The current established level for Arsenic is 10mcg/day. Why Labdoor decided to use a never approved or accepted proposal in unclear. In regards to the Natural Calm supplement, here is Natural Vitality's official statement on it: "The simple truth is that Natural Calm both meets its potency label claim and is well within the No Significant Risk Levels for arsenic and in fact is less than 10 percent of California’s Prop 65 stringent safe threshold levels. This has been consistently scientifically validated by third party test results from top American testing labs as part of standard Good Manufacturing Practices. While testing results commissioned by Labdoor, when correctly interpreted, align perfectly with our results, their report contains a number of distortions which provide both a highly inaccurate picture and a disservice to consumers. We believe Labdoor is attempting to use our well-deserved, award-winning reputation to inflate their importance. Apparently their business model involves casting themselves as a “trusted source” by creating sensationalized stories to drive traffic to their website with the objective of creating profit from advertising sales and, interestingly, sales of supplements. Factual Flaws Labdoor’s Natural Calm test size was over two and a half times our recommended serving size but they did not factor that into their analysis. When correctly interpreted o

Ep 760How To Easily Measure The Human Energy Field, "Chakras", Organ Function & More.
Four months ago, at the London Biohacker's Summit, my friend, fellow biohacker and self-quantifying nerd Ruben Salinas got on stage and, during a fascinating presentation that revealed a host of cutting-edge methods he uses to keep his body and brain optimized, mentioned that each day he sticks his finger in a device called a "Bio-Well", which measures parameters like his "chakras" and "energy field" and "organ health". I was skeptical. So I did some research into Bio-Well, and discovered Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, who is a Professor of Physics at St. Petersburg Federal Research University of Informational Technologies, Mechanics and Optics in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Korotkov is a scientist known for his research on the human energy field and he developed something called the Gas Discharge Visualization technique, popularly known as "GDV". He was involved with the development of this Bio-Well device, and during our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Korotkov developed gas discharge visualization (GDV) technique the point where you can keep a running tab on everything from cortisol to organ function throughout the day...[3:40] -How a mild electrical shock to your finger can result in the ability to engage in direct, real-time viewing and analysis of changes in your human energy fields...[12:35] -The actual research behind GDV and whether it actually works when investigated in studies...[17:35] -How you can use simple measurements on your finger to determine things like food allergies, altitude acclimatization, brain wave states, diseases and more...[27:00] -How you can use GDV assess response to drugs, meditation, stress reduction therapy or any other interventions...[29:43] -How GDV can be used to monitor your personal environment for things like mold and fungi...[33:05] -The methods Konstantin follows to modify his diet, exercise and lifestyle based on GDV testing of himself and his environment...[33:55] -And much more... Ep 759The Best Way To Test For Zika Virus & Beyond: One Single, Very Inexpensive Test That Can Measure EVERYTHING - An Interview With Army Microbiologist & Virus Expert Dr. Charles Wick.
Today's podcast guest is a guy who could save and be saving more lives than any guest I've ever had on the podcast. While working for the army as a microbiologist, he developed two extremely unique methods of microbe detection. The first is a universal and physical virus counter (IVDS). The second is a computer program that, in conjunction with Mass Spectometry, identifies the unique protein fragments (peptides) within a sample of anything and universally detects all the microbes in a sample (MSP) - from Ebola to influenza to Zika, West Nile Virus, AIDS and beyond, including known, unknown, and mutated viruses. He was the feature of the NY Times Article: Scientists and Soldiers Solve a Bee Mystery, which was about work he did in the bee population in 2010 to shed light on colony collapse disorder. But the promise of what he does goes beyond bees, and when it comes to health and fitness, in the right hands his Mass Spect Proteomics program could help scientists and physicians study the gut, infection and other elements of health. The need for a lot of lab work would be eliminated and human body clinicians would no longer be limited to parameters of particular panels, because they would now have access to one very inexpensive test that sees everything - EVERYTHING - and beats the pants off old-school methods of disease detection. The Integrated Virus Detection System (IVDS) he helped to develop is a fast-acting, highly portable, user-friendly, extremely accurate and efficient system for detecting the presence of, screening, identifying, and characterizing viruses. Let's say, for example, you get bit by a mosquito (this analogy is inspired by the newspaper clip below that I was just reading this morning). Over several days, you feel increasingly worse and worse. What if, using your own saliva or other body fluid, you could immediately test in the comfort of your own home to see if you had Zika, West Nile, or some other microbe-related issue? That's possible. My guest's name is Dr. Charles Wick, and he is based out of a small tech firm in Montana that is working to make IVDS laptop sized units to be used use in mobile applications like airports, drugstores, homes, etc. to help quickly and accurately diagnose the flu and other bugs, along with developing technologies to help bee keepers manage their hives to save insects like bees and beetles. Dr. Wick is a retired senior scientist from the US Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) where he served both as a manager and research physical scientist and has made significant contributions to forensic science. Although his 40+ year professional career has spanned both the public sector and the military, his better-known work in the area of forensic science has occurred in concert with the Department of Defense (DOD). After earning four degrees from the University of Washington, Dr. Wick worked in the private sector for twelve years, leading to a patent, numerous publications, and international recognition among his colleagues. In 1983, Dr. Wick joined the Vulnerability/Lethality Division of the United States Army Ballistic Research Laboratory, where he quickly achieved recognition as a manager and principal investigator. It was at this point that he made one of his first major contributions to forensic science and to the field of antiterrorism; his team was the first to utilize current technology to model sub-lethal chemical, biological, and nuclear agents. This achievement was beneficial to all areas of the Department of Defense, as well as to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and gained Wick international acclaim as an authority on individual performance for operations conducted on a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) battlefield. During his career in the United States Army, Wick rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Chemical Corps. He served as a Unit Commander for several rotations, a staff officer for six years (he was an Division Chemical Staff Officer for two rotations), Deputy Program Director Biological Defense Systems, and retired from the position of Commander of the 485th Chemical Battalion in April of 1999. Dr. Wick continued to work for the DOD as a civilian at ECBC. Two notable achievements, and one which earned him the Department of the Army Research and Development Award for Technical Excellence and a Federal Laboratory Consortium Technology Transfer Award in 2002, include his involvement in the invention of the Integrated Virus Detection System (IVDS), a fast-acting, highly portable, user-friendly, extremely accurate and efficient system for detecting the presence of, screening, identifying, and characterizing viruses. The IVDS can detect and identify the full spectrum of known, unknown, and mutated viruses, from AIDS to foot and mouth disease, to West Nile Virus, and beyond. This system is compact, portable, and does not rely upon elaborate chemistry. The second, and equally award winning, was his leadership in th

Ep 758The Most Effective Detox You've Never Heard Of (And Exactly How To Do It).
In 1974, the World Health Organization stated that environmental toxins create approximately 84% of all chronic diseases. Over the past 40 years this number has increased dramatically... ...and as a matter of fact, an oft-neglected but serious issue called "cellular toxicity" is one of the major epidemics of our lifetimes, and remains an underlying cause of numerous health issues, including gut problems, thyroid issues, sluggish metabolism, brain fog and much more. In today's episode, you're going to learn exactly why that is, what cellular toxicity is, what you can do about, and the most effective form of detoxification that you've probably never heard of. My guest on today's episode is Dr. Daniel Pompa, D.PSc., who is widely considered to be a global leader in the health and wellness industry. He travels all over the country educating practitioners and the public on the root causes of inflammation driven diseases such as Weight Loss Resistance, Hypothyroid, Diabetes, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autoimmune Disorders and other chronic conditions. ...and I happened to have had the pleasure of hanging out at Dan's house with him in Park City Utah during my TrainToHunt National Championships competition, and finding out everything I've always wanted to know about how to detox the body as effectively as possible. Dan's authority is rooted in his own personal battle. He has overcome serious neurotoxic illness and heavy metal poisoning, and he did that using the cellular detoxification strategies we talk about in this show. His methodology is rooted in self-experimentation, and runs very much counter to mainstream detox tactics. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Pompa developed extremely"toxic" cells despite being a seemingly healthy pro mountain biker and chiropractic physician...[9:30] -The big, big problem with detoxifications such as cilantro, chlorella, juice cleanses, colonics and other popular detox methods...[30:00] -Why the popular cleansing mineral zeolite is too big to cross a cell membrane, and what you can do about it...[34:05 & 53:55] -Dr Pompa's 5 "R's" of fixing your cells for good, and how you can personally do each of these R's...[37:35] -Why you must detox your cell, and not just your tissue or your blood, and exactly how to detox your cells...[40:15] -What happens if you mix popular detox methods, like fiber supplements or glutathione or n-acetyl cysteine or juicing, etc...[58:15] -The tiny white bottle that Dr. Pompa gave me that made me feel like complete crap and call him on the phone three days later...[63:20] -What you should feel like when you are detoxing, and how long you should actually detox for (you'll be surprised at the answer)...[64:30] -And much more! Ep 757A "Healthy Soda" Super-Special: Is Diet Soda Good For You, Stevia DeMystified, Sugar Alcohols, Natural Flavors & More.
If you happened to watch the most recent Crossfit Games, you may have noticed they were brought to you by...soda. That's right: a soda company was sponsor of the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games, the worldwide competition to find the Fittest On Earth. Not exactly something you'd associate with Coke or Pepsi or Mountain Dew (or my all-time favorite Dr. Pepper), is it? The name of the soda company is "Zevia", and my guest on today's show is Paddy Spence, who is a 23-year veteran of the natural and organic foods industry - a guy who completely cut sugar out from his diet 14 years ago, and a guy who then purchased Zevia, a line of stevia-sweetened sodas that is now the world's top-selling zero-calorie, natural diet soda. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters and is an avid athlete, having completed over 40 triathlons and trained in martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Shotokan Karate and boxing. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How one can make the argument that "caveman drank soda", and the fascinating history of fermented beverages and soda-like compounds...[12:00] -How did the name Zevia come to be...[17:30] -What causes "keto flu" and how to avoid getting it...[21:50] -Why stevia tastes bitter to some people...[28:05] -Why Coke's "TruVia" and Pepsi's "PureVia" can actually be very bad for you (and why not all stevia is created equal)...[32:30] -How sugar alcohols are processed by your body, and the one form of sugar alcohol that won't make you fart...[40:15] -The little-known fruit grown in the foothills of China that actually does not spike your blood sugar...[42:25] -Why many natural flavors come from pretty nasty sources, including the anal gland of a beaver...[50:00] -The big reason you need to avoid anything that lists "caramel color"...[56:45] -My own personal vodka cocktail mix I use with Creme Soda flavored Zevia, and how my kids make Root Beer Floats with Root Beer flavored Zevia...[59:00] -Paddy's amazing recipe for a Zevia custard dessert...[61:10] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -Zevia soda -Simply Gum -Here’s the recipe for Banana Swirl, created by Paddy's amazing wife Jerra Spence: 2 frozen bananas, a pinch of cinnamon, and a couple of splashes of Zevia Cream Soda. Combine all of these in a high-powered blender and mix until the bananas are smooth & creamy. Place in freezer for 30-60 minutes. Serve in a dish, possibly with some stevia-sweetened chocolate chips on top! Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Paddy or me?
