Ep 77032 Ways to Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve, Fine-Tune Your Nervous System & Self-Hack Your Hormones.
When it comes to your hormone balance, your sleep, your mood, your gut function, your physical performance, your cognitive power and nearly every other body and brain variable you want to optimize, nothing beats addressing the health of your vagus nerve. In Podcast #341, I talk a bit about how to enhance your vagus nerve tone and "hack" your nervous system, but I really only scratched the surface of everything you can do to care for and enhance this incredibly important nerve. So in today's podcast, you're going to learn everything you need to know about your vagus nerve and how to properly care for it. If you implement the tips in this episode, I guarantee you will be shocked at the results and effects on stress and heart rate variability, mental horsepower, physical performance, recovery, digestion, hormone balance, libido and much more. My guest on this episode is Joseph Cohen. Joe is the owner and main writer at SelfHacked.com. Since upgrading or 'biohacking' himself, Joe has become an investor and entrepreneur, founding SelfDecode, a biotech company that helps people understand their genetics in order to optimize their health. SelfDecode will use genetics, blood tests, symptoms and other health data to predict beneficial outcomes for drugs, supplements, lifestyle and dietary changes in order to optimize health. Joe also consults with high profile executives, self-hackers and companies and is writing a book about optimizing health. Joe likes to spend his free time learning how to code. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Joe was, at one point, unemployable...[5:45] -What the vagus nerve is and how it drastically affects health or disease various organs...[11:50 & 16:45] -The nitty gritty science...how does the vagus nerve *work* exactly...[14:30] -The best way to check your vagus nerve function...[43:15] -Free and easy things you can do increase the health of our vagus nerve...[31:30] -The best sleeping position for the vagus nerve...[44:15] -Top foods and eating strategies hat help your vagus nerve...[35:30] -Joe's top piece of biohacking gear for the vagus nerve...[37:20] -The three supplements for the vagus nerve...[41:20] -And much more! Ep 768The Art Of Hacking Your Brain Without Smart Drugs: A Podcast With Immersive Journalist, Adventurer & Author Neil Strauss.
Neil Strauss is an American author, journalist and ghostwriter, perhaps best known for his controversial best-selling book The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists, in which he describes his experiences in the seduction community in an effort to become a "pick-up artist." He is a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and also writes regularly for The New York Times. But Neil's interests go far beyond "seduction". For example, in his book Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life, he spent three years surviving amongst survivalists, tax-dodgers, billionaire businessmen, and the government itself, and the book was hailed by Rolling Stone as an "escape plan" for the current world crisis. When I visited Neil's home in Malibu to record this interview, I found myself immersed with Neil in everything from advanced virtual reality game playing, crazy underwater pool workouts, surfing with internet celebrities and drinking "billion-dollar smoothies", all of which you'll hear about in this podcast recorded from Neil's kitchen. During our discussion, which gets slightly explicit at times, you'll discover: -Exactly how to do an underwater pool workout like Laird Hamilton...[7:25] -The ingredients of the "billion dollar smoothie"...[12:50] -Why Neil and I were surfing with internet celebrity Cameron Dallas prior to recording the episode...[16:20] -Why Neil is so interested in advanced virtual reality gaming...[18:20] -Why Neil checked himself into sex addiction therapy...[22:30] -Neil's uncomfortable volley of questions to me in which I potentially throw my Mom and Dad "under the bus"...[36:40 & 55:00] -Neil's three steps for "rewiring" your brain without the use of smart drugs or biohacks...[45:30 & 63:00] -Why Neil paid to get thrown in the back of a trunk with his hands ziptied together...[77:30] -And much more! Ep 767A New Way To Get Unstoppable Conditioning, Maximum Strength, Speed, Power & Muscle...In 3 Hours Per Week (Or Less).
On several recent podcasts, I've mentioned that (especially when I've been traveling and have limited equipment), one of my key, go-to workouts is a program known as "Neuro-Mass", which I now consider to be one of fastest methods for developing power and strength with little more than your own bodyweight and, optionally, a kettlebell or two, adding slabs of functional muscle to a lean frame quickly, and building muscle recruitment and explosiveness in a smart, systematic way. Neuro-Mass gives you the exact protocols you need to create an impressive, functional, athletic physique, combining the best kettlebell resistance and bodyweight exercises with a new cutting edge training method called "Neuro-Sets". These Neuro-Sets, comprised of grinds, isometrics and explosive movements, create rapid physique transformation. While most training programs only focus on one approach to create growth or lean muscle or power or strength, Neuro-Mass uses multiple stressors in a single workout to create a better and smarter body, developing pure power combined with amazing capacity for sustained and continual strength output. The entire program was designed by this episode's podcast guest: Jon Bruney. Jon's exploits as Guinness World Record-holding strongman have been immortalized in Ripley’s Believe it or Not and seen on NBC’s: America’s got Talent, The Today Show and TruTv’s Guinness World Records Unleashed. A true renaissance man in the realm of strength-development, Jon is a best-selling author, world-class trainer, coach, motivational speaker, strongman, and pastor. Jon’s work with competitive athletes includes Olympians and NFL players. He is the author of the best-seller “Neuro-Mass – The Ultimate System for Spectacular Strength”. He also writes a training series called “Foundations” which is featured in MILO, widely considered the world’s most prestigious strength training journal. As co-owner of Submit Strength Equipment, Jon has been responsible for the design of numerous pieces of cutting-edge training equipment now in use around the world. Jon is also a veteran of numerous trainer certification courses. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why one of Jon's favorite tricks is to attach two Harley-Davidson motorcycles to his body...[11:15] -How to start each set that you do with something called a "grind" to stimulate maximum muscle recruitment...[17:40] -The best way to breathe if you are lifting a weight to maximize muscle tension...[21:45] -Why Jon is such a fan of the Powerlung, and also putting a paper bag over your face...[24:10] -A surprising training trick you can do with a yoga block while you are sprinting...[33:45] -Why you should create "controlled trauma" in a muscle during an exercise...[36:40] -The reason most people do isometric exercises like a wall squat the wrong way, and how you should actually do it...[43:00] -How to exhaust a muscle completely with nothing more than a bath towel...[44:25] -And much more! Ep 766How Your Computer Monitor Is Slowly Killing Your Eyes, And What You Can Do About It.
Do you ever get headaches after working on a computer for a long time? Eye strain? Mild irritation? Brain fog? It's not all in your head. See, just like most televisions, computer monitors "flicker". Monitors have been flickering for many years, but most people don't realize this because the flicker is invisible. However, the flicker is still very hard on your eyes and is just one of the computer monitor issues responsible for the growing epidemic of near-sightedness and myopia - also known as "computer vision syndrome". Even fancy, modern PC LCD monitors are not flicker-free, even though many people think they are. These LCD monitors originally started out by using something called CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) as a backlight source for the monitor, but in recent years manufacturers have shifted to using LEDs (light emitting diodes). If you have one of those thin monitors, then you probably have a LCD monitor with LED, and if you are unsure, you can check the model number on the backside of the monitor and Google it. The use of LED has numerous benefits, including lower power consumption, far fewer toxic substances due to the absence of the cathode and some fantastic picture quality advantages, but along with all these benefits come potential eyestrain issues that can damage and destroy your eyes over the long term. See, when your monitor is set to maximum brightness, the LEDs are glowing at full 100% strength. If you reduce the brightness setting in the menu, the LEDs need to omit less light, and this is accomplished by inserting small breaks, or pauses (flickers!) in which the LEDs turn off for a very short, nearly invisible time. When you reduce the brightness setting of your monitor even more, the breaks become longer. This creates a frustrating catch-22: a bright screen can strain your eyes, and the flicker created by a less bright screen can also strain your eyes. Compared to old-school CCFL monitors, the newer LED-based monitors carry the greatest risk of giving you eyestrain, tired eyes or nasty headaches. You can read more about this issue in the article "LED Monitors can cause headaches due to flicker". My guest on today's podcast has figured out how to tackle this issue, and has invented a special piece of software called "Iris" that controls the brightness of the monitor with the help of your computer's video card, allows you to have adequate brightness without the flicker, and even automatically adjusts your computer monitor's settings based on the sun's position wherever you happen to be in the world. His name is Daniel Georgiev, and he is a 20 year old computer programmer from Bulgaria. Before he learned to code, Daniel was a rower in his country's national team for more than 5 years, and participated in the 2012 World Rowing Junior Championship. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Daniel got kicked off his soccer team, and within two years qualified for the Bulgarian National Team in rowing...[11:20] -Why Daniel programmed his computer monitor to freeze and stop his work every 30 minutes...[19:45] -Why Daniel doesn't like the computer program "Flux" for decreasing blue light on your monitor...[21:45] -The link between color "temperature" and the amount of blue light a computer monitor creates...[29:52] -How to convert a glossy computer monitor screen into a matte computer monitor screen...[33:50] -Why you should use font rendering technologies to change the type of font you are looking at when you read on a computer monitor...[39:00] -How to automatically invert colors on a screen or change the screen to grayscale when you are working to reduce eye strain and improve your ability to sleep...[46:25] -Why you blink 66% less when you are working on a computer (and why yawning when you work on your computer is actually quite important)...[50:00 & 54:50] -How to set up your computer monitor to force you to take automatic "Pomodoro" breaks, and get instant reminders for eye exercises, neck exercises and back exercises...[56:10] -And much more! Ep 765The Mysterious Kuwait Muscle-Building Phenomenon, The Too-Much-Protein Myth, Anabolic Triggering Sessions & More With The MindPump Podcast Crew.
Meet the guys from MindPump podcast. The hosts - who traveled all the way up from San Jose to descend upon my my house in Spokane, Washington to record this podcast - claim to "pull back the curtain on the mythology, snake oil and pseudo-science that pervades the fitness industry and present science-backed solutions that result in increased muscular development and performance while simultaneously emphasizing health." Take a gander at these fellas...as they seem to have the body composition and transformation equation pretty well figured out. They include... Sal DiStefano... Sal was 14 years old when he touched his first weight and from that moment he was hooked. Growing up asthmatic, frequently sick and painfully skinny, Sal saw weightlifting as a way to change his body and his self-image. In the beginning, Sal’s body responded quickly to his training but then his gains slowed and then stopped altogether. Not one to give up easily, he began reading every muscle building publication he could get his hands on to find ways to bust through his plateau. He read Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, Mentzer’s Heavy Duty, Kubrick’s Dinosaur Training, and every muscle magazine he could find; Weider’s Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Iron Man and even Muscle Media 2000. Each time he read about a new technique or methodology he would test it out in the gym. At age 18 his passion for the art and science of resistance training was so consuming that he decided to make it his profession and become a personal trainer. By 19 he was managing health clubs and by 22 he owned his own gym. After 17 years as a personal trainer he has dedicated himself to bringing science and TRUTH to the fitness industry. Adam Schafer... Adam Schafer is a IFBB men's physique Pro and fitness expert. Adam made his entrance into the fitness world 14 years ago and has continued to send shock waves throughout the community ever since. He is a man of many talents who wears many hats. He is first and foremost a certified fitness expert who has an insatiable desire to help people in need of major lifestyle changes and daily accountable motivation. He is also incredibly driven entrepreneur and business minded individual with a vision that continually challenges his colleagues and peers to think bigger and achieve more. Justin Andrews... Justin has an incredible passion to disrupt the personal training industry and create ground breaking programs and tools that fitness professionals and clients alike can benefit from. The fitness industry in general needs a massive face lift to speak more to the generation growing up with a more advanced technology tool kit. Justin’s approach is to create programs that utilize technology as it advances and cut through the millions of options people face everyday when seeking specific information relating to their fitness needs. The great thing about where we are today is how easy it is to access information, the bad part about accessing all this information is how much misinformation is out there to weed through. As a health and fitness professional with a proven track record here in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Justin Andrews will keep working tirelessly to keep people educated and connected to quality personal trainers long into the future. Doug Egge... Doug received his first gym membership as a gift from his dad when he was 16 years old. Rocky III had just come out and he was determined to build a body like Stallone. It never happened. Despite following the advice of muscle magazines and busting his butt in the gym, Doug saw minimal gains over the next 30 years. Then he was introduced to Sal Di Stefano by his chiropractor who recommended he work with Sal to eliminate muscle imbalances that were causing lower back issues. Sal's unique approach, often 180 degrees different from what Doug had read in books and magazines, produced more results in a matter of months than he had experienced in the 30 years prior. Doug with an extensive marketing and media production background, recognized Sal's unique gift and perspective was missing from the fitness world and suggested that they should join forces. Doug and Sal have since produced life-altering programs such as the No BS 6-Pack Formula and MAPS Anabolic. Doug is very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Adam and Justin as Producer of MindPump. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why bodybuilders are traveling to Kuwait and mysteriously coming back with 20+ pounds of extra muscle...[17:00] -The truth about underground muscle building supplements like SARMS, Clomid, injectable testosterones and more...[23:20 & 30:10] -Why old-timey strength training protocols could be the best way to build strength compared to new-school bodybuilding protocols...[34:00 & 41:00] -How to do an "anabolic triggering session"...[52:00] -Why you need far less protein than you think...[59:30] -The biggest myths in the fitness industry...[67:40] -And much more... Ep 764The Best Time Of Day To Exercise, Have Sex, Take Supplements, Read A Book, Take A Nap & More!
Do you know your chronotype? Until two weeks ago, I didn't. Turns out, I'm a "lion" chronotype (with a strong tendency to delve into "bear" chrono-typedness). You might be a wolf, in which case you should try working out at 6:00pm and not 6:00am. An early morning run for you might feel like punishment, while an early evening run will provide an enjoyable pick-me-up. Or maybe you're a lion, in which case having a wine, beer or cocktail between 5:30pm and 7:30pm will minimize the chances of sleep disruption from alcohol. Or perhaps you're a dolphin, which means you should schedule any big presentations or work tasks for around 4:00pm, when you're most awake, most alert, and even most confident. You could also be a bear, in which case shifting dinner from 6:00pm to 7:30pm can actually accelerate fat loss and stave off late-night snacking. Interesting, eh? You'll find all the science, the studies, and the facts behind this type of new chronotyping research in the new book "The Power of When: Discover Your Chronotype-and the Best Time to Eat Lunch, Ask for a Raise, Have Sex, Write a Novel, Take Your Meds, and More". A growing body of research actually proves there is a right time to do just about everything, specifically based on your biology and hormones. As Dr. Michael Breus - the author and today's podcast guest - presents in his groundbreaking new book The Power of When, working with your body's inner clock for maximum health, happiness, and productivity can be easy, exciting, fun and pay off big dividends. For example, since reading this book, I've even cut out caffeinated morning coffee and replaced it with decaf, started prioritizing morning and afternoon sex instead of evening sex, and shifted my fiction-based creative writing from 8:00pm to 8:00am. The Power of When presents a unique program for getting back in sync with your natural rhythm by making minor changes to your daily routine based on your unique "chronotype". In the book, after you've taken Dr. Breus's "Bio-Time Quiz" to figure out your chronotype (e.g. are you a Bear, Lion, Dolphin or Wolf?), you then find out the best time to do over 50 different activities, from when to exercise to have sex to take supplements to ask for a raise to eat breakfast to take a nap and much more. So you can consider this book the ultimate "lifehack". Dr. Breus, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist, a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a Fellow of The American Academy of Sleep Medicine. With a specialty in Sleep Disorders, Dr. Breus he is one of only 163 psychologists in the world with his credentials and distinction. In addition to his private practice, where he treats athletes and celebrities alike, Dr. Breus also trains other sleep doctors and consults with major airlines, hotel chains, mattress manufacturers and retailers to provide the optimum sleep experience for their customers. For example, an audio relaxation CD he designed for the Crowne Plaza Hotels helps millions of people fall asleep each year, and for over 14 years Dr. Breus has served as the Sleep Expert for WebMD and frequently pens "Sleep Matters" a column in WebMD magazine. He also writes The Insomnia Blog, which appears regularly on WebMD, The Huffington Post, The Dr. Oz Blog, Psychology Today, MedPedia, Organized Wisdom, Travora Travel, and Furniture Today, and has been interviewed on CNN, Oprah, The View, Anderson, and The Doctors and The Dr. OZ Show. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why I'm now having sex in the morning and coffee in the afternoon...[10:35] -The fascinating history of chronotyping and chronobiology...[11:50] -Why it is that guys like Tim Ferriss and Tai Lopez operate extremely well in the wee hours of the night...[18:30] -Why Thomas Edison created the most disruptive event in the history of bio-time...[32:10] -Whether chronotyping is based on scientific research or simply cute, easy-to-remember animals...[30:25] -When the best time of day is to drink alcohol and to drink coffee based on your chronotype...[25:40 & 27:20] -A simple, scientific, biological way to determine chronotype based on a seven dollar piece of home health equipment...[31:35] -When the best time to have sex is, why and how to "sync up" sex times with your partner based on their chronobiology...[35:35] -When the best time of day is for cardiovascular exercise vs. yoga vs. weight training...[39:25 & 47:20] -How your chronobiology can affect when you should take supplements or medications...[22:00] -Dr. Breus's most potent and effective jet lag tips...[51:00] -Why Daylight Savings Time day is the #1 day that traffic accidents occur...[59:50] -And much more! In regards to the Natural Calm supplement, here is Natural Vitality's official statement on it: "The simple truth is that Natural Calm both meets its potency label claim and is well within the No Significant Risk Levels for arsenic and in fact is less than 10 percent of California’s Prop 65 stringent safe threshold levels. This has been consistently scientifically validated by third party test results from top American testing labs as part of standard Good Manufacturing Practices. While testing results commissioned by Labdoor, when correctly interpreted, align perfectly with our results, their report contains a number of distortions which provide both a highly inaccurate picture and a disservice to consumers. We believe Labdoor is attempting to use our well-deserved, award-winning reputation to inflate their importance. Apparently their business model involves casting themselves as a “trusted source” by creating sensationalized stories to drive traffic to their website with the objective of creating profit from advertising sales and, interestingly, sales of supplements. Factual Flaws Labdoor’s Natural Calm test size was over two and a half times our recommended serving size but they did not factor that into their analysis. When correctly interpreted o

Ep 760How To Easily Measure The Human Energy Field, "Chakras", Organ Function & More.
Four months ago, at the London Biohacker's Summit, my friend, fellow biohacker and self-quantifying nerd Ruben Salinas got on stage and, during a fascinating presentation that revealed a host of cutting-edge methods he uses to keep his body and brain optimized, mentioned that each day he sticks his finger in a device called a "Bio-Well", which measures parameters like his "chakras" and "energy field" and "organ health". I was skeptical. So I did some research into Bio-Well, and discovered Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, who is a Professor of Physics at St. Petersburg Federal Research University of Informational Technologies, Mechanics and Optics in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Korotkov is a scientist known for his research on the human energy field and he developed something called the Gas Discharge Visualization technique, popularly known as "GDV". He was involved with the development of this Bio-Well device, and during our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Korotkov developed gas discharge visualization (GDV) technique the point where you can keep a running tab on everything from cortisol to organ function throughout the day...[3:40] -How a mild electrical shock to your finger can result in the ability to engage in direct, real-time viewing and analysis of changes in your human energy fields...[12:35] -The actual research behind GDV and whether it actually works when investigated in studies...[17:35] -How you can use simple measurements on your finger to determine things like food allergies, altitude acclimatization, brain wave states, diseases and more...[27:00] -How you can use GDV assess response to drugs, meditation, stress reduction therapy or any other interventions...[29:43] -How GDV can be used to monitor your personal environment for things like mold and fungi...[33:05] -The methods Konstantin follows to modify his diet, exercise and lifestyle based on GDV testing of himself and his environment...[33:55] -And much more... Ep 759The Best Way To Test For Zika Virus & Beyond: One Single, Very Inexpensive Test That Can Measure EVERYTHING - An Interview With Army Microbiologist & Virus Expert Dr. Charles Wick.
Today's podcast guest is a guy who could save and be saving more lives than any guest I've ever had on the podcast. While working for the army as a microbiologist, he developed two extremely unique methods of microbe detection. The first is a universal and physical virus counter (IVDS). The second is a computer program that, in conjunction with Mass Spectometry, identifies the unique protein fragments (peptides) within a sample of anything and universally detects all the microbes in a sample (MSP) - from Ebola to influenza to Zika, West Nile Virus, AIDS and beyond, including known, unknown, and mutated viruses. He was the feature of the NY Times Article: Scientists and Soldiers Solve a Bee Mystery, which was about work he did in the bee population in 2010 to shed light on colony collapse disorder. But the promise of what he does goes beyond bees, and when it comes to health and fitness, in the right hands his Mass Spect Proteomics program could help scientists and physicians study the gut, infection and other elements of health. The need for a lot of lab work would be eliminated and human body clinicians would no longer be limited to parameters of particular panels, because they would now have access to one very inexpensive test that sees everything - EVERYTHING - and beats the pants off old-school methods of disease detection. The Integrated Virus Detection System (IVDS) he helped to develop is a fast-acting, highly portable, user-friendly, extremely accurate and efficient system for detecting the presence of, screening, identifying, and characterizing viruses. Let's say, for example, you get bit by a mosquito (this analogy is inspired by the newspaper clip below that I was just reading this morning). Over several days, you feel increasingly worse and worse. What if, using your own saliva or other body fluid, you could immediately test in the comfort of your own home to see if you had Zika, West Nile, or some other microbe-related issue? That's possible. My guest's name is Dr. Charles Wick, and he is based out of a small tech firm in Montana that is working to make IVDS laptop sized units to be used use in mobile applications like airports, drugstores, homes, etc. to help quickly and accurately diagnose the flu and other bugs, along with developing technologies to help bee keepers manage their hives to save insects like bees and beetles. Dr. Wick is a retired senior scientist from the US Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) where he served both as a manager and research physical scientist and has made significant contributions to forensic science. Although his 40+ year professional career has spanned both the public sector and the military, his better-known work in the area of forensic science has occurred in concert with the Department of Defense (DOD). After earning four degrees from the University of Washington, Dr. Wick worked in the private sector for twelve years, leading to a patent, numerous publications, and international recognition among his colleagues. In 1983, Dr. Wick joined the Vulnerability/Lethality Division of the United States Army Ballistic Research Laboratory, where he quickly achieved recognition as a manager and principal investigator. It was at this point that he made one of his first major contributions to forensic science and to the field of antiterrorism; his team was the first to utilize current technology to model sub-lethal chemical, biological, and nuclear agents. This achievement was beneficial to all areas of the Department of Defense, as well as to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and gained Wick international acclaim as an authority on individual performance for operations conducted on a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) battlefield. During his career in the United States Army, Wick rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Chemical Corps. He served as a Unit Commander for several rotations, a staff officer for six years (he was an Division Chemical Staff Officer for two rotations), Deputy Program Director Biological Defense Systems, and retired from the position of Commander of the 485th Chemical Battalion in April of 1999. Dr. Wick continued to work for the DOD as a civilian at ECBC. Two notable achievements, and one which earned him the Department of the Army Research and Development Award for Technical Excellence and a Federal Laboratory Consortium Technology Transfer Award in 2002, include his involvement in the invention of the Integrated Virus Detection System (IVDS), a fast-acting, highly portable, user-friendly, extremely accurate and efficient system for detecting the presence of, screening, identifying, and characterizing viruses. The IVDS can detect and identify the full spectrum of known, unknown, and mutated viruses, from AIDS to foot and mouth disease, to West Nile Virus, and beyond. This system is compact, portable, and does not rely upon elaborate chemistry. The second, and equally award winning, was his leadership in th

Ep 758The Most Effective Detox You've Never Heard Of (And Exactly How To Do It).
In 1974, the World Health Organization stated that environmental toxins create approximately 84% of all chronic diseases. Over the past 40 years this number has increased dramatically... ...and as a matter of fact, an oft-neglected but serious issue called "cellular toxicity" is one of the major epidemics of our lifetimes, and remains an underlying cause of numerous health issues, including gut problems, thyroid issues, sluggish metabolism, brain fog and much more. In today's episode, you're going to learn exactly why that is, what cellular toxicity is, what you can do about, and the most effective form of detoxification that you've probably never heard of. My guest on today's episode is Dr. Daniel Pompa, D.PSc., who is widely considered to be a global leader in the health and wellness industry. He travels all over the country educating practitioners and the public on the root causes of inflammation driven diseases such as Weight Loss Resistance, Hypothyroid, Diabetes, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autoimmune Disorders and other chronic conditions. ...and I happened to have had the pleasure of hanging out at Dan's house with him in Park City Utah during my TrainToHunt National Championships competition, and finding out everything I've always wanted to know about how to detox the body as effectively as possible. Dan's authority is rooted in his own personal battle. He has overcome serious neurotoxic illness and heavy metal poisoning, and he did that using the cellular detoxification strategies we talk about in this show. His methodology is rooted in self-experimentation, and runs very much counter to mainstream detox tactics. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Pompa developed extremely"toxic" cells despite being a seemingly healthy pro mountain biker and chiropractic physician...[9:30] -The big, big problem with detoxifications such as cilantro, chlorella, juice cleanses, colonics and other popular detox methods...[30:00] -Why the popular cleansing mineral zeolite is too big to cross a cell membrane, and what you can do about it...[34:05 & 53:55] -Dr Pompa's 5 "R's" of fixing your cells for good, and how you can personally do each of these R's...[37:35] -Why you must detox your cell, and not just your tissue or your blood, and exactly how to detox your cells...[40:15] -What happens if you mix popular detox methods, like fiber supplements or glutathione or n-acetyl cysteine or juicing, etc...[58:15] -The tiny white bottle that Dr. Pompa gave me that made me feel like complete crap and call him on the phone three days later...[63:20] -What you should feel like when you are detoxing, and how long you should actually detox for (you'll be surprised at the answer)...[64:30] -And much more! Ep 757A "Healthy Soda" Super-Special: Is Diet Soda Good For You, Stevia DeMystified, Sugar Alcohols, Natural Flavors & More.
If you happened to watch the most recent Crossfit Games, you may have noticed they were brought to you by...soda. That's right: a soda company was sponsor of the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games, the worldwide competition to find the Fittest On Earth. Not exactly something you'd associate with Coke or Pepsi or Mountain Dew (or my all-time favorite Dr. Pepper), is it? The name of the soda company is "Zevia", and my guest on today's show is Paddy Spence, who is a 23-year veteran of the natural and organic foods industry - a guy who completely cut sugar out from his diet 14 years ago, and a guy who then purchased Zevia, a line of stevia-sweetened sodas that is now the world's top-selling zero-calorie, natural diet soda. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters and is an avid athlete, having completed over 40 triathlons and trained in martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Shotokan Karate and boxing. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How one can make the argument that "caveman drank soda", and the fascinating history of fermented beverages and soda-like compounds...[12:00] -How did the name Zevia come to be...[17:30] -What causes "keto flu" and how to avoid getting it...[21:50] -Why stevia tastes bitter to some people...[28:05] -Why Coke's "TruVia" and Pepsi's "PureVia" can actually be very bad for you (and why not all stevia is created equal)...[32:30] -How sugar alcohols are processed by your body, and the one form of sugar alcohol that won't make you fart...[40:15] -The little-known fruit grown in the foothills of China that actually does not spike your blood sugar...[42:25] -Why many natural flavors come from pretty nasty sources, including the anal gland of a beaver...[50:00] -The big reason you need to avoid anything that lists "caramel color"...[56:45] -My own personal vodka cocktail mix I use with Creme Soda flavored Zevia, and how my kids make Root Beer Floats with Root Beer flavored Zevia...[59:00] -Paddy's amazing recipe for a Zevia custard dessert...[61:10] -And much more! Resources from this episode: -Zevia soda -Simply Gum -Here’s the recipe for Banana Swirl, created by Paddy's amazing wife Jerra Spence: 2 frozen bananas, a pinch of cinnamon, and a couple of splashes of Zevia Cream Soda. Combine all of these in a high-powered blender and mix until the bananas are smooth & creamy. Place in freezer for 30-60 minutes. Serve in a dish, possibly with some stevia-sweetened chocolate chips on top! Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Paddy or me? Male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed in their mothers’ wombs and then for the rest of their lives to 50 Hz magnetic fields at an intensity of either 20μT or 1,000μT (200 mG or 10 G). At the age of six weeks, they each received a single 0.1Gy dose of gamma radiation, a known cancer agent. So let's take a look at what we have here. 1. The six week old rats were given a single 0.1 Gy dose of Gamma radiation. A KNOWN cancer agent. Gamma rays are classified as ionizing. This means they have the power to cause permanent cellular damage. See Below: Primer

Ep 752The Gut Super-Special: Eating Camel Poop, Weird Constipation Causes, Pig Whipworms & More: How To Banish Bloat, Fix Your Microbiome & Reboot Your Gut.
In the beginning of this episode, I mention "Michael Phelps cupping" and what the research really says about whether cupping does or does not work, and also mention a new study on 20-25% gains in lean muscle gain, strength and power, and this HMB-ATP stack that uses exactly what they used in the study (use 50% discount code BEN50). When it comes to healing your gut, getting rid of bloat and constipation, changing your gastrointestinal bacteria or any other digestive topic, I consider Dr. Robynne Chutkan to be one of the smartest women on the face of planet. She is on faculty at Georgetown University and founder of the Digestive Center for Women, and she is author of not one, not two, but three books that focus on her primary philosophy: healing your body from the inside out. So basically, she really loves talking about poop. Her latest book, The Microbiome Solution, is a deep dive into how and why some of our modern day living is actually causing more problems than we realized to the tiny microbes that keep us happy and healthy– household cleaners, air conditioning, processed food. Ep 751Ayahuasca 101, Tripping Out On Nutmeg, Magic Mushrooms & More With Dennis McKenna.
When it comes to plant based medicine, my guest on today's podcast is widely considered to be a groudbreaking pioneer. His name is Dennis McKenna. Dennis's research - spanning back to the 1970's - has focused on the interdisciplinary study of Amazonian ethnopharmacology and plant hallucinogens. During the early 1970's, he developed a technique for cultivating psilocybin mushrooms with his brother Terence McKenna and they later published what they had learned in a book entitled Psilocybin - Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide. Dennis has conducted extensive ethnobotanical fieldwork in the Peruvian, Colombian, and Brasilian Amazon. His doctoral research (University of British Columbia, 1984) focused on the ethnopharmacology of ayahuasca and oo-koo-he, two tryptamine-based hallucinogens used by indigenous peoples in the Northwest Amazon. He is a founding board member of the Heffter Research Institute, and was a key organizer and participant in the Hoasca Project, the first biomedical investigation of ayahuasca used by the UDV, a Brazilian religious group. He is currently Assistant Professor in the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The strange magazine, still published, that Dennis's father used to read - a magazine that first got Dennis interested in the "paranormal" and psychedelics... -How DMT works, and ways that you can induce the same psychedelic sensation that DMT induces without actually using something like ayahuasca... -Ways that you can induce deep sleep without relying upon compounds such as valium or ambien... -Why one common spice that you can find on the counter at Starbucks can send you on a hallucinogenic trip... -The difference between an ayahuasca experience in rural South America vs. an urban New York loft... -Why Silicone Valley is obsessed with LSD microdosing as a creativity-enhancing "smart drug"... -How psilocybin works to enhance your connection with nature and how you may be able to activate this via other mechanisms... -How one can safely "source" these kind of plant-based medicines in their local community... -And much more... Ep 749Getting Ripped With Yoga, Using Isometrics To Build Massive Athleticism, Five Things You Must Do Every Morning & More!
At a health conference, two years ago, I met a giant, 6'5" basketball player - a beast of man - who swore that his entire fitness routine was comprised of yoga and basketball. I scoffed at this, swearing that the guy must be sneaking away to the gym to hoist a barbell or do explosive plyometrics... ...but then, just a few months later, I met another guy (a very ripped and athletic guy) at a different health conference, and this guy - named Dean Pohlman - completely destroyed me in an obstacle course competition, then informed me afterwards that his training primarily consisted of... ...you guessed it: yoga. So as you can imagine, I was somewhat intrigued with how one could use yoga to do things like maintain a very aesthetic body and build athleticism, and I had Dean on a podcast episode called "How To Get Ripped With Yoga". That episode was so popular and helped so many people get fit with Dean's special flavor of yoga, that I decided to get Dean back on today's episode to talk yoga, mobility, athleticism, and much more! Dean is the founder of Man Flow Yoga, a fitness-centric style of yoga dedicating to helping anybody who wants to get ripped with yoga to not just get ripped, but to also get massive increases in their flexibility, core strength, endurance, balance, and bodily awareness. It’s basically yoga for people that want the physical benefits without the lifestyle change of becoming a hippie. You hold the postures much longer, more emphasis is placed on technique (instead of the spiritual), and the workouts are more catered to the physical needs of guys (although his workouts are equally accessible to women). Dean was a former collegiate-lacrosse player when he discovered the potential that yoga had to help improve physical fitness for athletes. He rejected the traditional approach to yoga, however, and in 2013 created a brand of yoga that catered to the more physical fitness-inclined individual. He is the author of the #1 bestselling Yoga Basics for Men eBook, and he has been featured in the Huffington Post, Fox 13 Tampa News, Austin KXAN News, Ben Greenfield Fitness (of course!), and many more top-ranked podcasts. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The five things Dean does every morning to create a perfect day... -The one breakfast Dean has every morning, 365 days a year... -What happens when you hold a pose in yoga for 60-90 seconds instead of the standard 10-30 seconds... -Why yoga will create a muscular imbalance in your back and shoulders, and what you can do about it... -How to develop power and brute strength with yoga... -Why Dean doesn't get into the spiritual side of yoga much, and my disagreement with Dean on this... -Why yoga doesn't increase your mobility, and what you can do about it... -Dean's top tool he uses to quickly remove muscle knots... -How Dean uses his elbow and other body parts to massage himself prior to yoga... -My crazy home massage routine that includes infrared, wholetones music, CBD, ayurvedic oils and more... -Why you should push the "reboot" button on your body each year (and how to do it)... -And much more! Ep 748Unleashing The Phenomenon Of Using Sound & Music For Performance, Recovery, Healing & More.
Quick question: when was the last time you listened to music? Or white noise? Or “binaural beats”? Or any other form of audio? And did you ever give any thought to the frequency of the actual wavelengths of sound contained within that audio? Until recently, I didn’t. I had no clue that frequencies of sound, frequencies of music, and even the frequencies of the piano that my kids practice each day or the guitar and ukelele that I practice each day can actually affect cognitive function, heart health, liver, kidneys, digestion, libido, mood and much, much more. But at a recent health summit, someone handed me a book called “The Sound Of Healing”, written by author Michael Tyrrell…along with a handful of CD’s that Michael had recorded. These CD’s, called "Wholetones" are described as music that "heals, repairs, and protects against disease." So, skeptical but curious, I sat down and read the entire Sound Of Healing book, and I began occasionally listening to the CD’s while driving, while getting a massage, while sitting in my sauna, etc. Every time I finished a CD, I had such a unique feeling of elation and satisfaction after listening, I downloaded a digital tuning app and retuned my guitar and my ukelele to the “frequencies” Michael described in the book. This may all seem a bit “woo-woo”, but it made a huge difference in the ability of a song to make me feel uplifted and full of positive energy as I played it. I managed to get Michael on today’s podcast, and during our discussion you’ll discover: -Why the music and sound you listen to every day is not tuned the right way and can actually be destroying organ function... -How sound frequencies affect the human body, water, plants and more... -How to "re-tune" music and sound to heal organs and provide therapy to the body... -How to combine light and sound to de-stress your body... -Why digital sound from CD's and mp3's are not as good as analog sound from things like vinyl albums, and what you can do about it if you don't want to buy a vinyl record turntable... -The best way to use the sound to heal your body and to target specific organ systems... -What Michael thinks about the use of tuning forks as vibrational sound therapy... -How can a musician "re-tune" their instrument to the correct frequency... -And much more... Muscle is not for bodybuilders anymore. Ep 742The Man Who Biohacks Olympic Athletes: Electronic Tattoos, Self-Quantifying Contact Lenses, Flexible Electronics, Artificial Intelligence & More.
I recently watched a fascinating video about sports technology in which Dr. Mounir Zok, who is the Director of Technology and Innovation for the U.S. Olympic Committee, delves into everything from electronic tattoos that read body signals to contact lenses that analyze fluid in the eyes for instant self-quantification. In other words, this guy is the nerd who biohacks the jocks. Dr. Zok, who holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, plays an instrumental and strategic role in bringing emerging technologies to Team USA. He is responsible for championing, setting up and running high-performance technology programs that increase the medaling chances of Team USA athletes at the future Olympic and Paralympic Games, including wearable technology, smart textiles and fabric, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. And Dr. Zok is fluent in four languages. So he is officially one. Smart. Cookie. In today's episode, we take a deep dive into the realm of advanced self-quantification techniques for athletes. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Zok measures the oxygen levels in his muscles... -Why sweat and tears are the new goldmine in self-quantification... -How an electronic, biodegradeable tattoo can be used to detect muscle and nervous system activity... -The fascinating emergence of new contact lenses for analyzing fluids in the eye... -Socks that can measure your blood lactate levels... -Headbands that can prime the motor cortex for enhanced performance... -How the US Women's Track Cycling team is using artificial intelligence to enhance training... -How to strike a balance between the fine art and the nitty-gritty science of reading the body... -Whether you need to be concerned exposure to excessive bluetooth or wifi radiation from self-quantification devices... -And much more... Ep 741The Next Big Anti-Aging Drug: Everything You Need To Know About "NAD".
Scientific American recently published the article "Beyond Resveratrol: The Anti-Aging NAD Fad", an article that proposes that... ..."recent research suggests it may be possible to reverse mitochondrial decay with dietary supplements that increase cellular levels of a molecule called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)"... ...and also that... ..."the mitochondria in muscles of elderly mice were restored to a youthful state after just a week of injections with NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a molecule that naturally occurs in cells and, like NR, boosts levels of NAD"... Since that article was published I've received an onslaught of questions about this mysterious molecule called NAD. It just so happens that a friend of mine, Thomas Ingoglia, known as one of the best NAD scientists on the planet and is also in contact with the best NAD clinicians on the planet - both with decades of experience second to none. I consider Thomas himself to be one of the most knowledgeable and frequent users of NAD I've ever met, and one of the few that has been playing around with NAD in combination with cryotherapy, blueberry extract, hyperbaric oxygen and other "biohacks" to completely turn him around from being bed-ridden sick and losing half his family in a car crash to being in the best health of his life, including crushing his first Spartan race with me last year (prior to which took high doses of NAD). Problem is, most NAD clinical researchers are all underground at the moment. The FDA doesn't look kindly at NAD supplement companies and integrative doctors, they are quite skeptical of naturopathy, and their first impulse is to turn these things and others into patentable drugs because that’s the language the FDA speaks. Plus, NAD can be dangerous. Thomas even knows a guy personally (ironically, a Phd in toxicology that poisoned himself due to his own error) who hospitalized himself experimenting with the substances we’re going to be talking about in this podcast episode. So you need to proceed with caution and with the formal clinical information Thomas has opened my eyes to. Along with Thomas, today's podcast features Dr. Ross Grant, Phd. Dr. Grant is perhaps the most prolific authors in the field of NAD, and he specializes on NAD in the brain. He started researching NAD research back in 1994 while being laughed at, when no one was doing NAD research. Dr. Ross Grant is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Medical School and CEO of the Australasian Research Institute, Sydney Adventist Hospital. A biochemical pharmacologist with a Ph.D. in Neurochemistry/Neuropharmacology, Dr. Grant’s research is focused on NAD - specifically the role of oxidative stress - e.g. emotional stress, diet, and exercise - and NAD metabolism on brain cell death and cellular degeneration. A secondary interest is in the effect of exposure to novel nutritional components, such as polyphenols, on human cellular response to oxidative stress, with a goal of detecting and correcting early degenerative biochemical changes associated with aging-related degenerative disease. Dr. Grant is a member of the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), Australian Neuroscience society (ANS), Australian Society of Clinical & Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology, Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA). With forty-eight articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, Dr. Grant is perhaps the most prolific author in the field of NAD research. In addition to Dr. Grant, we are joined by Dr. Philip Milgram, MD, from the NAD Treatment Center in San Diego, California. Dr. Milgram recovered from his own challenges with addiction and now helps other people in recovery from addiction, specifically by using NAD protocols. He trained in 1991 with Vernon Johnson, the man who coined the term “Intervention”. He was certified as a Prevention Specialist by the Certifying Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CCBADC) in 2001, and has three degrees in counseling from UCSD; in Counseling and Interpersonal Communication, Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Advanced Intervention. In addition to NAD Treatment Center, Dr. Milgram served as the original Medical Director of Confidential Recovery and the Pemarro Detox Center. He has also served as the Medical Consultant for The Soledad House Recovery Home for Women and ABC Recovery since they opened. He is a member of the attending staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Milgram is a member of The American Society of Addiction Medicine, the California Association of Addiction Medicine, International Doctors in AA, Like-Minded Docs Addiction Medicine, The American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Society of Anti-Aging Medicine, and the American Nutraceutical Association. During our discussion, you'll discover: -An easy explanation of what exactly NAD is and what it does inside your body... -The protocol Thomas used to go from being

Ep 740High Cortisol Mysteries Unveiled, The Adrenal Fatigue Myth, Advanced Lab Blood Testing & More!
Note: There is a special addendum at the end of this podcast episode in which Ben mentions the book "Ego Is The Enemy", this sermon on Time & Resources by a man named Toby Sumpter and the practice of iridology. Last month, I released the podcast episode entitled "Why Is My Cortisol High Even Though I’m Doing Everything Right? Hidden Causes Of High Cortisol, The DUTCH Test & More!". In that episode with fellow podcaster and health consultant Chris Kelly, we delved into the mystery of why cortisol can be so high in someone such as myself who sleeps well, does meditation, yoga, and lives a relatively stress-free life. It was a fascinating, extremely popular episode, but created just as many questions as it answered about what really causes high cortisol in people, and whether it's something you even need to worry about in the first place! To delve into the cortisol mystery more, after that episode, Chris Kelly introduced me to Dr. Bryan Walsh, a naturopathic doctor from Maryland, with an amazing series of WellnessFX lab testing interpretation videos on YouTube. Dr. Walsh has an extremely sharp mind, an extensive fitness background, a degree in naturopathic medicine, and a host of additional training and certifications. His wife is a naturopath too, so his children are probably some of the healthiest on the planet. When tough cases or head-scratching lab results arise, Dr. Walsh turns from mild-mannered dad and husband into forensic physiologist, pulling out his microscope to analyze blood, saliva, urine, lifestyle and whatever else he has to, in order to solve the medical mystery. Dr. Walsh ran an extensive series of follow-up lab tests on me, primarily through the laboratory testing services of another functional medicine practitioner - a chiropractor in Atlanta, Georgia named Dr. Brady Hurst. At his company, TrueHealthLabs, Dr. Hurst uses advanced laboratory tools to uncover hidden dysfunctions and uses primarily drugless treatment plans to restore those dysfunctions. TrueHealthLabs has a number of direct-to-consumer tests that are not traditional lab tests and can instead be custom panels that a doctor or patient can order. They even offer some functional lab testing in Europe. In this episode, Dr. Brady Hurst, Dr. Bryan Walsh and I completely geek out on the high cortisol lab testing results and during our discussion, you'll discover: -The secret ingredients the green morning smoothie that Dr. Bryan gives to his young children... -How to keep your morning green smoothie from getting oxidized or damaged by the blender... -The seven stage home filtration process Dr. Brady uses to filter his water... -The very first additional hormone you should test for if you find out your cortisol is high... -The best lab panel to look at whether or not your body is actually producing adequate antioxidants... -When high HDL (commonly known as good cholesterol) can actually be a bad thing... -How high cortisol down-regulates your metabolism and your insulin sensitivity and puts your body into fat storage mode... -Why thyroid replacement medications or natural thyroid supplements rarely work to fix the thyroid... -When you don't need to actually worry about high liver enzymes on a blood lab test... -The hidden laboratory marker that can tell you if you need to be consuming more sea salt and minerals... -How to tell if your body has excess oxidative stress, and what you can do about it... -And much more! C-peptide -Ben Greenfield's TrueHealthLabs Custom Lab Testing results Extra Notes: After our call, in a flurry of e-mails, Dr. Walsh also recommended the following follow up tests: Lymphocyte subset panel (CD4/CD8) – Your lymphocytes are relatively low compared to your neutrophils, so I’m not sure it would show much, but this panel shows ratios of lymphocytes, regardless of their total levels, and could offer a little info. Cytokine panel – I’m a little hesitant on the accuracy of these panels, but they are used in research, so I think they are accurate enough for our purposes. This might show a tendency for a Th1/Th2/Th17 shift, which could be interesting to know. High cortisol is often associated with a Th2 dominance, which this panel would theoretically show. If it were me, I’d be curious about the results of this panel. Neopterin – This is a huge stretch, but I personally love this marker. When neopterin is elevated, it suggests an Th1 respons

Ep 73863 Cups Of Coffee A Day & More: Five Simple Things You Can Do to Live a Longer, Healthier Life.
I received plenty of puzzled comments and inquiries from podcast listeners when, several episodes ago, I mentioned that one could gain a large number of surprising health, longevity and disease preventing benefits by drinking up to 4-6 cups of coffee a day. What I said in that episode was based on a book I recently read - a book by a Harvard medical researcher named Dr. Sanjiv Chopra. The book, entitled "The Big Five", delves into five simple things you can do to live a longer, healthier life and I actually learned quite a bit about everything from coffee to Vitamin D to nuts and beyond in it. Each of the recommendations outlined in this book has been proven by an overwhelming number of tests, trials, and studies to increase health and lifespan. Dr. Chopra promises that if you adapt the five simple, virtually-free suggestions in his book, you will live a longer and healthier life, guaranteed - without needing the latest expensive supplements, fad diets, jazzy exercise programs, and state-of-the-art gym equipment. Since I'm all about natural living, anti-aging and longevity, I decided I had to get this guy on the show. Sanjiv Chopra, MD, is Professor of Medicine and served as Faculty Dean for Continuing Medical Education at Harvard Medical School for 12 years. He is the James Tullis Firm Chief, Department of Medicine, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Chopra has more than 150 publications and seven books to his credit. Dr. Chopra is Editor-in-Chief of the Hepatology Section of UpToDate, the most widely used electronic textbook in the world subscribed to by more than 850,000 physicians in 149 countries. He is a sought after motivational speaker across the United States and abroad, addressing diverse audiences on topics related to medicine, leadership, happiness, and living with purpose. Awards bestowed upon Dr. Chopra include.... • The George W. Thorn Award - 1985 • Received the highest accolade from the graduating class of Harvard Medical School, the Excellence in Teaching Award - 1991 • The Robert S. Stone Award - 1995 • American Gastroenterological Association’s Distinguished Educator Award - 2003 • Elected as a Master of the American College of Physicians, a singular honor bestowed to only a select few individuals for being ͞citizen physicians, educational innovators, scientific thinkers and humanists who inspire those around him or her and sets the standards for quality in medicine - 2009 • Recipient of Ellis Island Medal of Honor for “Exemplifying outstanding qualities in both one’s personal and professional lives while continuing to preserve the richness of one’s particular heritage.”–2012 On May 10, 2016, Dr. Chopra released his 8th book titled, The Big Five: Five Simple Things You Can Do to Live a Longer, Healthier Life, and during our discussion about the book, you'll discover: -The shocking answer to the question Dr. Chopra asks when he's giving a lecture on liver disorders... -The famous philosopher who drank 60-70 cups of coffee per day... -Whether it matters if the coffee is caffeinated or decaffeinated... -The one organ in your body that highly benefits from caffeinated versions of coffee... -The surprising myth about coffee, blood pressure and heart rate... -How many cups of coffee you can actually drink per day if you are a pregnant woman... -How men and women respond differently to coffee, and why... -Fast caffeine oxidizers vs. slow caffeine oxidizers, and which does not respond to caffeine's effects on exercise... -Dr. Chopra's thoughts on coffee enemas... -The effect of coffee on muscle motor units... -The "world's most expensive coffee" from elephant dung and weasel poop... -The trick to know if you are getting enough Vitamin D from natural sunlight... -Why mold in peanuts and coffee may not be as big an issue as you think... -How meditation affects your telomeres, your cells and your gut... -And much more... Ep 737Why You've Been Lied To About Cancer And What You Can Do About It.
Dr. David Minkoff and I go way back. I first met this MD and 41 time Ironman triathlon finisher at the Half-Ironman World Championships in Florida six years ago, and interviewed him a few weeks later in the podcast episode “A Peek Into The Life of An Ironman, Natural Medicine Physician.” Then, he helped me with metal detoxification using a metal chelating spray he designed, and I interviewed him about this in the podcast “How Hidden Sources Of Heavy Metals Are Destroying Your Health, And What You Can Do About It.” He also helped me with my son’s exercise induced asthma, which is now completely eliminated using the techniques Dr. Minkoff introduced me to in the podcast “Why More Kids Are Getting Exercise Induced Asthma, and What You Can Do About It.” And last month, we recorded "Amino Acids, BCAA’s, EAA’s, Ketosis, Bonking & More With 41 Time Ironman Triathlete Dr. David Minkoff. ". Now Dr. Minkoff is back to talk about cancer. During our discussion, you’ll discover: -The crazy story of why the voles around the Chernobyl radiation don't get cancer... -How a cancer cell produces toxic amounts of lactic acid, and why modern cancer medicine doesn't fix this problem... -Why we have been completely misled about why people actually get cancer, and why we're treating the cancer completely wrong... -How to mitigate the damage that chemotherapy causes... -Why you need to test your body's carbon dioxide levels, and how to do it... -Why too much protein - especially from dairy sources - could be a big issue when it comes to cancer... -The little-known water and blood ozonation methods Dr. Minkoff uses in his clinic, and how you can replicate the same effect in your own home... -Dr. Minkoff's controversial thoughts on "Gerston therapy" for cancer... -How you can personally decrease your chances of ever getting cancer... -And much more... More About Dr. Minkoff: Dr. Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He then worked as an attending physician in infectious disease, co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine until 1995. In 1997, his interest in alternative and complementary medicine led him to open LifeWorks Wellness Center, which has become one of the foremost alternative medicine clinics in the U.S. His search to find a source of the highest quality nutritional supplements led him to establish BodyHealth in 2000, a resource that could provide doctors with the best possible supplementation and education for their patients. Today, his BodyHealth products are used by hundreds of practitioners and individual consumers who seek all-natural wellness and detoxification supplements with a demonstrated high level of quality and effectiveness. In addition to their use by patients looking to heal disease, the BodyHealth products are also used by sports enthusiasts interested in achieving and maintaining optimal performance. As a 40-time Ironman triathlon finisher, (including 8 appearances at the Ironman World Championships) Dr. Minkoff has first-hand experience to help athletes achieve optimum conditioning. His expertise in protein synthesis, detoxification, and nutrition allow them to run, swim, and bike faster and longer. —————————— Resources we discuss in this episode: -Book: Tripping Over The Truth -Book: Bursting with Energy: The Breakthrough Method to Renew Youthful Energy and Restore Health -Podcast: Why You Get Cancer And What You Can Do About It -NatureAminos Essential Amino Acids -Hyperbaric oxygen therapy -Water ozonator -Kaqun water -MetalFree detox spray -Previous Interview with Dr. Minkoff: How Hidden Sources Of Heavy Metals Are Destroying Your Health, And What You Can Do About It. -Previous Interview with Dr. Minkoff: A Peek Into The Life of An Ironman, Natural Medicine Physician. -Previous Interview with Dr. Minkoff: Why More Kids Are Getting Exercise Induced Asthma, and What You Can Do About It. -Previous Interview with Dr. Minkoff: Amino Acids, BCAA’s, EAA’s, Ketosis, Bonking & More With 41 Time Ironman Triathlete Dr. David Minkoff. ** Use code BEN for 5% off any purchase at BodyHealth.com! ** Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Dr. Minkoff? Ep 736Zombie Musicals, Quitting Your Job & Living An Extraordinary Life with Stever Robbins.
Last month, I was driving to play tennis with some friends, and, while driving, I played a 55 minute audio episode entitled "Living an Extraordinary Life". I'm not a voracious "self-improvement" consumer, and this type of thing doesn't happen very often when I listen to podcasts, audiobooks or lectures, but I actually found myself multiple times stopping to pump my fist, verbally shout in agreement and furiously take notes. The program was recorded by my friend Stever Robbins, also known in the podcasting world as the "Get-It-Done Guy". Stever combines business savvy, "life hacking," and personal development to help people make their lives extraordinary. He is CEO of Ideas Unleashed, a company that helps thought leaders build businesses around their areas of expertise. He is a serial entrepreneur, executive coach, and executive curriculum designer. He co-founded the early internet success story FTP Software, served as COO of Building Blocks Interactive, CEO of JobTacToe.com, and has been an initial team member of ten start-ups, including four IPOs and three acquisitions. He was project manager at Intuit, where he co-led the development of the award-winning Quicken VISA Card. He serves as business plan judge for the Harvard Business School business plan competition, the Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Awards, the William James Foundation social enterprise competition, and the Mass Challenge entrepreneurship competition. His experience developing organizational leaders began as co-designer of Harvard Business School’s “Leadership and Learning” curriculum redesign, and has gone on to include being an advisor and mentor to senior managers in several high-growth companies. His Get-It-Done-Guy podcast has spent weeks as #1 in the iTunes business category and has been downloaded more than 23 million times. He has been a repeat commentator on CNN-fn's Entrepreneurs Only and hosted a regular segment on the nationally syndicated radio show Entrepreneurs, Living the American Dream. He is a featured expert in Harvard Business School Publishing's Harvard Manage Mentor, as well as appearing as an expert in critical thinking and memory in Houghton-Mifflin's forthcoming Skillbuilders series. He is the author of It Takes a Lot More than Attitude...to Lead a Stellar Organization and Get-it-Done Guy's 9 Steps to Work Less and Do More, an Amazon Business & Investing top-10 best-seller. Stever is also the co-writer and lyricist of the musical Work Less and Do More: The (Zombie) Musical. Yes, a zombie musical. And that is where we start with today's podcast. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Stever moved away from home when he was 15 years old... -What Stever means when he says "the journey is the reward"... -The crazy dream that Stever had that led him on a three year experiment to quit his job and start a podcast... -Why I dislike watching tennis and reading fiction, and how this relates to you deciding what an extraordinary life could be for you... -Why values like "hard work", "setting goals", "planning" are all myths... -How dangerous the concept of delayed gratification can be... -And much more! Ep 734Digital Detoxing, Travel-Proofing Your Immune System, Underground Body Weight Workouts & More With Joe DiStefano.
Last week, I went rafting in the Grand Canyon, and I completely unplugged with zero cell phone or internet for five days. I came out of this "digital detox" extremely nervous about what my e-mail inbox would look like, how many voicemails and text messages I'd have, and what kind of fires I'd need to put out on the business front. But amazingly, things were just fine. It took me two hours to catch-up on e-mail. None of my clients died, and most got through their pre-written workouts just fine without me. The post office was still delivering mail to my home. And life, my body, and my brain felt very, very good. Detoxed. Clean. My guest today, Joe DiStefano, is all about the digital detox. But he's no hairy hippie living in the woods. Instead, Joe is the co-founder of Spartan Coaching, the world's first international obstacle race training certification program. He has a B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science from Fitchburg State University, and he is pursuing a master's degree in Sports Psychology. Certified through the NASM as a Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist, he is also a Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA and has been trained at the C.H.E.K Institute as a Holistic Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach. Over the past decade, DiStafano has worked as a health and performance coach and a serial entrepreneur. Prior to joining Spartan Race, he oversaw the development of more than 100 women-only personal training studios across the U.S. His specialties include corrective exercise, nutrition, stress management, human psychology and business development. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Joe swears by using an "upright ski ergometer" as the #1 tool for total body fitness... -The best way to make coffee if you want to retain all the bioactive, cognitive-performance enhancing components... -Joe's top tip for travel-proofing your immune system... -How to enhance the absorption of any supplement you take... -The best body-weight-only travel workout you can do anytime, anyplace without anybody noticing... -How your organs stick to one another, and the kind of breathing technique that can "unstick" these organs... -Joe's underground method of making the gluten in bread less damaging... -What happened to Joe's body when he experimented with doing 5-6 hours of yoga per day during a digital detox in Costa Rica... -And much more... Ep 732Tattooed Crossfitter To Bearded Monk: How Mushrooms Rewire Your Brain, Yoga Tune-Up Balls & More With Mike Bledsoe
The first time I met Mike Bledsoe three years ago, he was hunched over in the corner of a busy porch at the PaleoFX convention meditating with a "Headspace" app. I took one look at this bearded, tattooed Crossfitter and judged him to be yet another exercise and fitness junkie meathead. I was dead wrong. Mike is profound, interesting, chock full of knowledge on everything from plant-based medicine to the fitness business to meditation and breathwork, and (like me) was homeschooled K-12. He is one of the founders and owners of Faction Strength & Conditioning Home of CrossFit Memphis. He has a degree in Exercise & Sport Science as well as a long list of meaningless certifications that might awe some people but not most and definitely not the people who are probably on this website. At 19 years of age, Mike thought he should donate his body and mind to the service of his country in the US Navy. It was there that he discovered that he didn’t like taking orders. He did extremely well and had a good time, but being part of a system was not his ideal (and he’s one idealistic dude). Getting out was scary, but made the entire world available to him. At the ripe old age of 24, he began college at the University of Memphis in the business department but before the first semester could end he changed his major to Health & Human Performance. It was there that he was first introduced to Olympic Weightlifting, by Dr. Brian Schilling. While in school he regularly donated his body and parts of it to research in the name of science. It was during his senior year that he and a guy named Rob Conner started CrossFit Memphis. Dropping out of school after the first semester of grad school, Mike devoted his time to growing the business and becoming a better coach. Mike “Matraca” Bledsoe (matraca means chatterbox in portuguese) is most well known for his ability to not shut up, and you'll understand why during our discussion in today's podcast, in which you'll discover: -Why Mike was so confused the first time he saw a PVC pipe in a gym.... -The strange story of Mike and Ben's meeting at Joe DeSena's farm in Vermont... -What Mike discovered by going on his first magic mushroom trip in a dog park... -How psilocybin and ayahuasca rewire neurons in your brains... -How to find a good shaman if you decide you want to do ayahuasca... -Mike's one-two combo for morning breathwork and deep tissue work... -Mike's evening routine, and what he completely avoids for 90 minutes before bed... -And much more... Ep 731Why Sugar Isn't As Dangerous As You Might Think, How Your Genetics Affect Your Sleep, Liver Toxicity & More With Dr. Chris Masterjohn.
Dr. Chris Masterjohn is one smart dude. You'll understand why when you listen to today's podcast episode, which we recorded face-to-face at PaleoFX in Austin, Texas. Chris earned his PhD in Nutritional Science in 2012 from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where he studied the role of glutathione and dietary antioxidants in regulating the accumulation of methylglyoxal. He served as a postdoctoral research associate from 2012 to 2014 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied interactions between vitamins A, D and K. He is now Assistant Professor of Health and Nutrition Sciences at Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY, where he is continuing his research on fat-soluble vitamins. Chris has authored or co-authored ten peer-reviewed publications. His writes a blog, The Daily Lipid, and produces a podcast by the same name. You can also follow his professional work on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The #1 thing that affects your circadian rhythm and ability (or inability) to sleep... -Why some people are more sensitive to blue light than others, and how you can figure out your own sensitivity to blue light... -Why Chris plays video games at night... -How much sugar you really need (you'll be surprised at the answer)... -The best time of day to eat carbohydrates... -The best time of day to eat amino acids, and why you should use a collagen form if you have protein at night... -Whether eating liver is really toxic... -The single most important stretch that Chris does with a broom handle... -Why advanced glycation end products (AGE's) aren't really the biggest culprit when it comes to aging... -How ketones can actually cause damage to your body... -Which nutrition deficiencies affect your body's ability to make melatonin at night... -And much more! Ep 730The Physician Who Works With Jamie Oliver, The Vatican, And The Right-Hand Man Of Oman
Meet Raj Bhachu. Raj describes himself as "Pharmacist, Homoeopath, Homotoxicologist, Bioresonance, Bioenergetic and Bioregulatory Medicine Practitioner, Kinesiologist, Scenar, Light and Sound Therapist"... This obviously unconventional physician, based out of London, is an underground, go-to source for professional athletes, CEO's, celebrities and anyone else who has "tried everything" to fix frustrating issues ranging from cancer to chronic joint pain to nagging injuries. He has some intriguing healing philosophies, biohacks, medical methods, crazy machines and gadgets that he uses - techniques that may seem "woo woo", but he also has some A-List clients, including Jamie Oliver, the Vatican and the right-hand man of Oman. He is technically an integrative medicine specialist, but focuses on holistic, herbal, homeopathic and naturopathic solutions for health. With his background as a pharmacist, he incorporates what he describes as "the best of conventional medicine with natural medicine products and philosophies." During our fascinating discussion, you'll discover: -How Raj discovered how to keep his sister alive after she was diagnosed with breast cancer... -How Raj has helped world-famous chef Jamie Oliver... -Why fructose and sour foods are a bigger issue than meat when it comes to joint pain and gout... -One single pressure point in your upper leg that can significantly reduce full body soreness... -What a typical day of eating looks like for Raj... -A simple trick you can use to see if the milk you are drinking is truly from grass-fed cows... -The prevalence of adulterated and fraudulently labeled olive oil imported into the United States... -Why the type of rice you eat should only Dehradun... -Why one of the most potent one-two combos you can do for anti-aging and longevity is to drink structured water and then perform infrared therapy... -How the use of tuning forks, a special type of music and sound therapy can instantly eliminate nagging aches and pains... -The one type of rice that does not actually contain arsenic, and how to find it... -Someone mentioned to me that you work with the Vatican and are "the right-hand man of the Oman". -How something called "EAV/CDS Computerised Health Screening" can be used to identify any health issues in your entire body, including identification of bacteria, parasites, viruses, fungi, moulds and yeasts... -The only two brands of water that Raj recommends you drink... -How low light laser can be used on the head for "Cranial Laser Reflex Technique" to assist with nerve pain such as sciatica and piriformis... -And much more... Ep 729Could This Ketosis-Based Elixir Hold The Key To Weight Loss, World Record Performances, Brain Healing and More?
A special kind of compound called "ketone esters" seem to be taking the sports and biohacking world by storm. Scientific American published the article "Ketone-Based Sports Drink Promises Edge for Athletes", claiming an extra 2% of energy from the use of ketones, which is the equivalent of 60 yards in a 30 minute row, along with a world record broken in a lab test of ketones. Cycling Weekly wrote "Ketones: New energy drink could be next big thing in cycling."... Tech and Innovation Daily featured the article "The Difference Between Sports Champs and Sports Chumps? Ketones."... ...and Daily Mail Online reported "Could this elixir hold the key to weight loss? Experts hope it'll also treat diabetes, epilepsy and Alzheimer's"... ...I've even written about my own forays into ketosis for everything from Ironman triathlon to freediving in the article "How To Get Into Ketosis". In today's podcast, I take an even deeper dive into ketosis and specifically focus on a type of ketosis supplement called "ketone salts", also known as "synthetic ketones". My guest is Dr. Richard Veech. Dr. Veech is one of the world’s foremost experts on ketosis, and the Senior Researcher and Laboratory Chief at The National Institutes of Health, the inventor of the ketone ester, and has worked for the last 47 years studying cellular energy and homeostasis. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The fastest way to get into ketosis... -Why humans are the only animal that can truly get into ketosis... -Why Dr. Veech believes that the exogenous ketones currently on the market can be extremely dangerous... -Why a "true" ketone ester is actually a salt free and non racemic (D-bhb) drink that replicates the actual secondary fuel that the body produces during times of starvation... -Why a non-racemic, non-salt version of ketones so expensive ($3000+ a bottle!)... -The truth about something called "NAD" as the next big anti-aging drug... -Which supplements Dr. Veech would use for anti-aging... -Whether or not coconut oil can truly work for curing Alzheimer's as some may claim... -How Dr. Veech received DARPA funding and created a new fuel for the troops... -Dr. Veech's most recommended method of measuring ketones... Ep 728The Diet I Recommend Most Often...And How You Can Easily Try It.
It seems like at least once a month on a podcast, I'm recommending somebody... ...whether that somebody is having skin issues like acne or eczema, gut pain, brain fog, food allergies or intolerances or constipation or any other signs of immune system or inflammation issues... ...try something called the "Autoimmune Diet". Problem is, this particular diet, typically meant to be followed for a short period of time until things are healed up, can be confusing when it comes to whether you really need to use it to heal an issue, which foods are "allowed" and which foods aren't, how to transition off the diet back into a "normal" eating style once you've finished the autoimmune diet, and that's exactly why I decided to have Eileen Laird on the show. Eileen just wrote the book "A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol", I read it last week, and it's exactly what it promises, a book simple enough that even someone with brain fog can understand, written like a conversation between friends a simple and contains all of the essential information in a package small enough to throw in your purse or backpack. Eileen is a writer, podcast host, and self-described "autoimmune warrior", who has reversed rheumatoid arthritis through this diet. Her blog, Phoenix Helix, receives 1 million unique visitors annually and there she features recipes, research and personal stories about the autoimmune experience. She also writes "Autoimmune Answers", a regular column in Paleo Magazine, and is the host of the Phoenix Helix Podcast, the only paleo podcast focused 100% on autoimmune healing. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly the autoimmune paleo diet is... -Why your body can attack itself and what you can do about it... -What a sample daily meal plan would look like... -A surprising "substitute" for organ meats... -Why Eileen isn't a fan of stevia... -Why it's a myth that the liver stores toxins... -Three "gentle" ways to detox... -If you can use nightshades, how you can make meals spicy... -How to "transition" back to normal eating after following the AIP, and he an order in which you would introduce foods... -And much more! Resources from this episode: -A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol -Pemmican from USWellnessMeats -Organic whole roasted crickets -Dry skin brush -Magnesium salts -Sushi Sonic wasabi Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Eileen or I about the Paleo Autoimmune diet, or anything else we discuss during this episode? Ep 727Why Is My Cortisol High Even Though I'm Doing Everything Right? Hidden Causes Of High Cortisol, The DUTCH Test & More!
Cortisol can be confusing. And frankly, most popular tests for cortisol don't tell you what really need to know... ...things like how fast cortisol gets cleared by your body, what's truly causing high cortisol or low cortisol, how cortisol (and other crucial hormones) are getting created and broken down, and much more... And this is important, because low cortisol leaves you with zero energy, low libido, brain fog, and feeling overtrained and adrenally fatigued, while high cortisol decreases protein synthesis and amino acid uptake, increases proteolysis (protein breakdown) and bone degradation, suppresses parts of the immune system, and increases serum glucose. So you feel pretty crappy when cortisol is low, and while you may feel good when cortisol is high, if cortisol is chronically high, there are some downsides to that too. Enter the DUTCH test - which is a new way to measure cortisol and much more. So what is the DUTCH test? The DUTCH test is a urine steroid hormone profile that measures hormones and hormone metabolites (called conjugates) in a dried urine sample, and is performed from the comfort of your home. It is the most cutting-edge way to truly see what’s going on when it comes to your hormones, because it doesn’t just measure hormones, but also something called “metabolites”, which are a measurement of hormone production and hormone breakdown. Measuring both hormones and their metabolites can give you or your health care practitioner a much better overall picture of hormone production. For example, a DUTCH urine steroid hormone profile on someone with low salivary cortisol could show normal cortisol production, but high levels of metabolites. In other words, this would indicate that you are producing enough cortisol, but it’s just getting broken down into its metabolites very quickly. There are also some metabolites that are important markers for cancer risk that can only be measured in urine. With serum (blood) and saliva hormone spot-testing, it’s possible to track variations in hormone release throughout the day – and this is a great way to measure how your hormones change during a 24-hour period (your circadian rhythm). In contrast, a standard 24-hour urine collection many physicians use reflects your total hormone output in a 24-hour period. But by using the DUTCH urine steroid test, you get the best of all worlds: blood, saliva and urinary results with just a urine collection. The DUTCH test measures the following: -Free cortisol -Free cortisone -Creatinine -Tetrahyrdocortisone -a-tetrahydrocortisol -b-tetrahydrocortisol -DHEAs -Progesterone metabolites (a-pregnanediol, b-pregnanediol) -Androgen metabolites (DHEAS, etiocholanolone, androsterone, testosterone, 5a-DHT, 5a-androstanediol, 5b-androstanediol, epi-testosterone) -Estrogen metabolites (estrone, estradiol, estriol, 2-OH-estrone, 4-OH-estrone, 16-OH-estrone, 2-Methoxy-estrone, 2-OH-estradiol) -6-OH-melatonin-sulfate My guest on today's podcast, Chris Kelly, is an expert when to the DUTCH test. Two years ago Christopher Kelly quit his job at a hedge fund to start Nourish Balance Thrive, a small functional medicine practice for athletes. Chris is a computer scientist and pro mountain biker and he works with two medical doctors, one of whom is also a pro mountain biker, and the other is Dr. Tommy Wood, a biochemist and Ph.D. fellow. He employs a registered nurse, and works with his wife Julia, who is a food scientist. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What the DUTCH test is and why it is far different than an Adrenal Stress Index... -My own shocking results on the DUTCH test... -The difference between free and total cortisol, and why you may think that your cortisol is normal when it is actually quite low... -Why some women should not use estrogen natural hormone replacement therapy... -How to know if you should be using a multivitamin... -How chronically high cortisol can cause high blood glucose, brain damage, and muscle wasting (even if you feel great short-term!)... -Things that can elevate cortisol if you are already doing everything "right" in terms of stress control, sleep, proper training recovery, etc... -Whether it's true that high ketosis can cause high cortisol... -What type of hidden infections in your gut or blood can cause high cortisol... -Supplements and herbs you may be taking can increase cortisol dramatically... -Whether there is a link between cannabis, CBD, THC and cortisol... -The most potent supplements or foods or essential oils for decreasing cortisol... -And much more! Ep 725Is This The Most Dense Source Of Nutrition On The Face Of The Planet?
Every morning I put about thirty tiny spirulina algae tablets on top of my morning smoothie. Then, in the evening, I often swallow another handful of tiny chlorella tablets to satiate my appetite. After that, I have to rinse out my mouth with water if I want my wife to kiss me, but it's all worth it because... ...regardless of whether you think that us land-dwelling creatures at some point evolved from ocean-dwelling life (a belief espoused by my previous podcast guest Jack Kruse to encourage people spend time in the cold and to eat more seafood), it can’t be denied that fish, turtles, and millions of other large and small inhabitants of water rely on one extremely dense nutrition source for sustenance of life… …algae – particularly from spirulina and chlorella sources. And (especially for vegans and vegetarians), it is the only way to get absorbable, brain-building DHA from a plant-based source. Chia seeds and flax seeds don't get converted into DHA. Algae has 40 vitamins and minerals, more protein then steak, more iron than liver, more calcium than milk, more chlorophyll than kale, more antioxidants than berries and provides so much steady energy and focus, that your performance improves all without chemicals, caffeine, sugar, gluten, soy, animal products or stomach distress. Algae is also an eco-friendly, sustainable crop that releases oxygen while it is growing, produces 100 times more protein per acre than beef and provides the safest, vegan, source of Omega 3. It is grown in fresh water tanks, not the ocean so it protects the ocean’s ecosystem too. And there's only one calorie in a single tab. My guest on today's podcast is Catharine Arnston, and she puts my own algae consumption to shame, eating 75 pieces of chlorella and 75 pieces of spirulina every day. She holds an MBA from Western’s Ivey School of Business, and a BA in geography and economic development from Queen’s University. She is a Board Certified Health Counselor from The Institute of Integrative Nutrition and a REIKI Master. She is also an algae expert and the CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of ENERGYbits, a sports nutrition company that sells algae in tablet form to athletes and consumers (click here and use code BEN to save 10% on any of their algae products). Catharine founded ENERGYbits eight years ago after she became aware of the health and athletic benefits of a plant based diet. When she subsequently learned that algae was the most nutrient dense plant in the world and that Asians had been growing it and benefiting from it for fifty years, she made it her life mission to bring algae into the mainstream so others could benefit from this superfood too. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What exactly algae is... -Which specific form of algae works best for pre or during workouts, and the appropriate hourly dosage... -Which form of algae has the identical nutritional profile to mother's milk... -The blue-green pigment in one specific form of algae that has been shown in research to enhance muscle recovery... -Why, based on RNA and DNA content, sardines and algae are two of the most potent anti-aging foods on the face of the planet... -How chlorophyll allows the body to produce ATP, even in the absence of calories... -Which type of algae acts as a natural source of sun protection and prevention of radiation damage... -And much more! Ep 724The Mold-Cancer Link, Resetting Your Nervous System, Dry Fasting, Nanonutrients & More With Ian Clark.
I first met today's podcast guest at a health conference four years ago. I happened to be sitting across the dinner table from him, and watched as he pulled out the mysterious leather satchel that I'd seen him carrying all weekend long. He opened the satchel to reveal tiny bottles of black oil, dropper bottles full of dark, green algae-like goo, mineral salts, and all kinds of other strange substances which he proceeded to use to "dress-up" his dinner. Later, I learned his name - Ian Clark - and invited him on my podcast to talk about that green algae goo, which turned out to be marine phytoplankton. I also learned that back in 2004, at the age of 46, when he was hit with a series of life threatening health issues, obesity, and a prediction from physicians that he only had about two years left to live, Ian refused to accept life’s traditional circumstances and decided to pursue more natural methods of restoring perfect health. Ian began traveling all over the world to discover strange, new health products while developing relationships with top labs and researchers in the fields of natural healing. Now operating out of a farm in Canada with his five sons and the support of an entire team of innovators at Activation Products Canada and Activation Germany, his company has become a significant manufacturer of unique products like magnesium spray, black seed oil, marine phytoplankton and much more. In today's podcast with Ian, you'll discover: -The genetic illness that nearly killed Ian back in 2004 and led to his journey of interest in natural healing... -How you can personally "equip" your body to deal with mold and fungus (and the shocking link between mold, fungus and cancer)... -How Ian has created his own micro-universe to heal his body... -One specific pose you can hold for 30 minutes a day for two weeks to "reboot" your autonomic nervous system... -The small exercise machine that Ian swears by and keeps in both his home and his office... -A new form of fasting called "dry fasting"... -What Ian uses as a "smart drug" to stay hyper-awake and alert... -The reason Ian sprays his entire abdomen with magnesium prior to bed at night... -Why Ian travels everywhere with a black leather bag, and what he keeps in it... -And much more! Ep 721Wine Myths, Dark & Dirty Secrets of the Wine Industry, Wine Biohacks & More!
A few months ago, I released the article "Dark & Dirty Secrets Of The Wine Industry, Four Ways To Make Wine Healthier, and What Kind Of Wine Fit People Should Drink." In it, I detailed the serious issues with arsenic, overpricing, lack of sustainability, high levels of sulfites, amines and ochratoxins, boatloads of sugars, high pH levels (that increase the possibility of contamination by unwanted organisms), a less than stellar taste, plastic polyethylenes and many other problems plaguing the modern wine industry - and causing many people (including my wife) to get headaches or poor sleep from a nightly glass of wine. At the end of that post, I highlight that I now drink a new kind of healthy wine called "FitVineWine", and in today's podcast, I interview Mark Warren, co-founder of FitVineWine, a national level black belt competitor in TaeKwonDo, a Crossfitter and of course, as a wine enthusiast and father of two boys, a man after my own heart. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why there are shocking levels of additives and other fillers in most modern wines... -How most wineries add sugar and grape concentrate to wines to adjust the pH (and why pH is so important)... -Why many wines are filtered through wheat and contain gluten... -Whether you need to be concerned about mold in wine... -How you can concentrate the amount of antioxidants like resveratrol, polyphenols and proanthocyanidins in grapes... -What it means for a wine to be "biodynamic" or "organically" farmed... -Why many wines are over-irrigated and why wineries should use less water, not more... -Why wine grapes should be grown at higher, cooler elevations... -Why people really aren't allergic to sulfites in wine, and why it's something else altogether... -How FitVineWine compares to other popular "healthy" or "Paleo" wines out there... -And much more!
