A way to use music to help kids (and adults) manage emotions

Off the back of Teeny Tiny Stevies' excellent episode this week, Osher reflects on how music is tied with learning, and creating his own helpful songs for the little (and not so little) people in his life. He also explores how music can help big and little people wrangle the emotions that come pre-packaged with life. ‌ What do you think? Get in touch at oshergunsberg.com Hosted on Acast. Using music to supercharge your child’s development w/ Teeny Tiny Stevies

The Aria Award winning kids’ group Teeny Tiny Stevies, sisters Byll and Beth Stephen have been singing helpful songs for little people for nearly a decade, giving parents and kids alike a common touchpoint for the important development moments in young lives. (Osher insists they gave he and Wolfie the most funnest ever song to sing about pooping). On their latest record, they add songs about dealing with Climate Change - and still make it sound delightful which is a true skill unto itself. They’re touring right around the country starting in July (don’t worry, they’re early shows so everyone’s home in time for a nap). Where I lose count of how many relationships I've had in the ten years I've been with my wife

After an argument with your partner have you ever caught yourself thinking “if only things were like they used to be” ? News flash - that wont make it better. Osher and Audrey celebrated ten years together over the weekend, and over that time how many different relationships do you think they had? (With each other that is) Here’s a clue - it’s more than how many years they’ve been together. In this episode, Osher reflects on the many different ways “things used to be”, and highlights how reinventing your relationship is probably the only way to get through the challenges life throws at two people trying to grow together. How addiction impacts others, and what to do about it - Live at SXSW (with Diane Young)

Addiction is a bastard of a disease. If you have it, you don’t know it. In fact, the number one symptom of addiction is that it convinces you that you aren’t an addict. That’s a terrible thing to get trapped in. And it’s a terrible thing for the people who care about you, because you may not realise it - but your addiction affects them as well as you, and not just because they have to deal with your bullshit. It changes the way they are around others. However, every now and then - addicts have what’s called a ‘moment of clarity’. A moment where they can see what they’re doing, what is happening to them and those around them, and where they’re headed. If you’re lucky - that moment is accompanied by a willingness to do something about it, something to interrupt a cycle of damage and destruction that they otherwise are powerful to interrupt. Those moments don’t last very long, so when they do - what can we do to help the addict in our lives? And what do we need to do to help ourselves? Today Osher welcomes back to the show one of the most important voices in Australia when it comes to the treatment of addiction. Diane Young, a Psychotherapist and Holistic Counsellor who is the Director of Clinical Supervision at South Pacific Private, Australia’s leading treatment centre of addiction, anxiety and depression. In this episode, Osher talks about how in times of stress his “to do” list grows from an achievable series of tasks into an overwhelming mountain of improbable, high-stakes ideas.Perhaps you can relate? As the list gets longer, the stress mounts, the distraction gets worse, the quality of work plummets, your effective ability to complete any of those tasks dwindles and then you start to put other things on the list that make up for the things you’ve now missed on the list.‌Thankfully there’s a way around this. The “To NOT do list”.Enjoy writing yours.‌Take the time to figure out your personal values with a test like this one‌To leave a voicemail, get in touch and get every episode ever head to oshergunsberg.com Hosted on Acast. Struggling to get stuff done? Same here!

Sometimes without realising it, we lapse back into old behaviours.Sometimes we’re hot and we’re cold.Getting dressed to do a workout and returning emails instead.Arriving late to an event with no clear reason as to why.Behaviours we’ve worked hard to change, sometimes rear their ugly heads. This is what happens when choices we make in a hot state (In the heat of the moment) differ from intentions we have in a cold state (when we are able to reflect on the alignment of our actions and our values). It’s when we’re in a hot state that we make poor decisions that often lead to shame spirals, frustration or negative outcomes.Osher reflects on making choices when we’re in cold states in the hope that we can stay on track and choose things more in alignment with our original intention. For previous episodes, to get on the mailing list and to get in touch, go to oshergunsberg.comIf you want to you can drop G a DM hereWatch full guest episodes on YouTube here Hosted on Acast. The dignity of cleanliness, Orange Sky friends and understanding homelessness with Nic Marchesi

We take our daily showers for granted. Orange Sky co-founder Nic Marchesi created a mobile laundry and shower for homeless people. The initial idea was to help people experience the dignity of cleanliness and make things just that little bit easier. But what happened while everyone’s belongings were being washed was arguably even more important.Orange Sky have created a new podcast called ‘The F Word’. Each episode shares real-life experiences of people experiencing homelessness and hardship, along with the perspectives of Orange Sky’s dedicated volunteers. You’ll hear about the origins of Orange Sky and meet their very first “friend,” learning how simple conversations and clean clothes can restore dignity and hope.Osher and Nic discuss the misconceptions about experiencing homelessness and hardship, the importance of chatting to people and the inherent dignity of being clean.Leave a voicemail at Better Than Yesterday: Osher GünsbergAlso go there to get on the mailing list, to get in touch and to listen to every episode ever. Embrace the discomfort of change while traveling at 230kms per second

To resist change is to resist the very nature of the universe that we are living in. We are moving through space at 230 kilometres per second, change is the only constant in our lives. And yet, when things alter or become different, most of us struggle.Today, Osher will explore ways to not only embrace change, but celebrate it. How to increase your resilience (so you can be more vulnerable)

Reflecting on Jelena Dokic’s episode, in this episode Osher explores the relationship between resilience and vulnerability. Vulnerability without resilience is dangerous. If you’re vulnerable without the strength to cope, you’re wide open to calamity. Like being immunocompromised next to someone coughing—you’re incredibly susceptible to harm. On the flip side, if you’re resilient without being vulnerable, your relationships, creativity, and ability to connect with others suffer. Vulnerability shows how susceptible you are to danger or stress, while resilience is your ability to recover from it. The good news is, resilience is something we can build and develop, and in this episode, Osher offer up a few key ways to develop that skill. We have come a long way. Ten years ago when this podcast began, would we as a society have been ready to hear Jelena Dokic’s story?Australia watched and cheered as Jelena Dokic dominated international tennis. ...and this will be the last time that ever happens. Finding joy and meaning by deliberatedly thinking about losing everything

We generally avoid thinking about losing the things we love, but what if deliberately doing so made us love and appreciate those things even more? In this episode, Osher explores the idea of “The Last Time” (*not the Farnham farewell tour). With its roots in ancient Stoic practice, “The Last Time” only takes a few breaths to do yet can have a profound effect on the presence and meaning we feel in our day. Ep 942The importance of creating a village around you, ft Gus Worland.

Osher reflects on his conversation with Angie McMahon and the recent news that half of Australian musicians earn less than 15% of the minimum wage. There's a massive cultural risk that we're facing. Ep 935A conversation about mental health/the news and the relationship between facts, stories and feelings

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has a lot in common with the way we get our news. In this conversation, Osher uses the way that we get our news and the algorithms which then reinforce those stories to draw out the relationship between facts, stories and our mental health. ‌ Tickets to NTNNNNN shows at MICF  TicketSearch OnlineWhat did you think of this episode? Ep 932A Hard Chat About Cats

After seeing a poster for a lost cat, Osher wanted to talk about what it means to be a cat owner. As a former owner of two furry, purry executioners, he was shocked at recent research out of ANU which shows that the scale of devastation that domestic, cute, furry pet cats are having on native wildlife is absolutely catastrophic. (Not even sorry for that pun)This is absolutely not a rant against cats. What did you think of this episode?Leave a comment on insta @osher_gunsbergGet tickets to Osher’s Live gigs at MICF https://bit.ly/ntnnnnn24Get on the mailing list https://bit.ly/oglinktreeGot suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 930Effective Discipline, Developing a child’s emotional skills, and setting boundaries as a parent (ft. Gen Muir).

Do you talk to yourself harshly? Did you know it’s as threatening as if someone else talked to you that way? Parenting expert Gen Muir is my guest today, in an episode packed with tools and techniques to help you (and me) not be so hard about potentially ruining the life of these kids we love so much. Her new book Little People, Big Feelings is an insight into not just powerful, research based tools and techniques - but a real-life reflection that this powerhouse Mum of four boys uses every day with her own family. The great news - apparently we only need to get it right 30% of the time to get an A in parenting. I wish highschool had those pass marks! We cover a lot - the role of self-compassion in parenting and the challenges of step-parenting, the importance of building strong relationships with children and creating a nurturing and supportive environment, self compassion around your own journey as a parent and - a vital discussion about choosing the right vehicle for your family. Ep 927519: Melissa Etheridge on grief, connection and redemption

MELISSA ETHERIDGE is my guest this week. Yes, THE Melissa Etheridge. She’s touring once again, kicking off in Perth in May, then heading east stopping all stations, Adelaide, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Sydney (which is already sold out). She’s bringing some family with her as you’re about to hear she is very very excited about it. If this is your first time hearing about this remarkable woman, let me bring you up to speed. Melissa Etheridge is a Grammy winning, Oscar winning singer/songwriter superstar. For over 30 years her distinctive voice has told stories of love, passion and heartache. She’s publicly lived through challenges that most people experience in private - her journey of coming out, a cancer diagnosis, hair loss from the chemo, and recently the absolutely tragic loss of her son Beckett who passed away from an opioid overdose at just 21. Yeah, heads up - we talk about that, and I end up crying in this chat. Melissa, however, has used her grief to explore ways of treating addiction by supporting world-first research into the use of plant medicines previously associated with sacred ceremony and how they might be able to save lives so affected by addiction. Ep 924518: Sharon Callister on the misconceptions of and the (many) solutions for homelessness

Today we’re talking to SHARON CALLISTER - she’s the CEO of Mission Australia. Sharon is one of these rare humans that’s just born to help. Can’t stop her, won’t stop her. Among the things she’s focusing on - is addressing the grim challenge of rising homelessness among women in Australia. You might be confronted by some of the misconceptions about homelessness in Australia. Sharon shares some pretty intense stories of people she’s worked with who have experienced homelessness and the challenges they face. Helping an individual is important, however it’s treating a symptom not a cause, so Sharon has a lot to say about the need for investment in social and affordable housing and the power of early intervention. We do talk about domestic and family violence and the role of education in changing attitudes and behaviours. I know it sounds grim - but I promise you this is a conversation full of hope. Enjoy this chat with Sharon Callister. MICF shows on sale now Tickets at oshergunsberg.comhttps://www.comedyfestival.com.au/2024/shows/osher-guensberg-ntnnnnGot suggestions for Better Than Yesterday?
