Sylvia Jeffreys on the juggle and the guilt of kids and a career

A few highlights from when Osher spoke with Sylvia Jefferies, an incredibly accomplished journalist and presenter, originally from Brisbane Australia. Sylvia has a matter-of-fact, get-after-it vibe about her which makes the career success she’s had make perfect sense. Sylvia is very open about how she juggles family life and home life, also how she has found particularly interesting ways to deliberately work emotional regulation into her day so she’s able to go back home to her kids after a day exposing herself to the unedited grim realities of the world. Ensuring the hammer of AI is a tool that builds, not a hammer that demolishes with Dr Matt Agnew

Here’s Osher’s three favourite facts about Dr Matt Agnew: He’s not that kind of doctor. He’s lovely. He has a PhD in Astrophysics. Matt has been busy, heading back to uni to study AI - and on the back of that he’s written a new book “IS MY PHONE READING MY MIND?” What he has to say today about AI, about the powerfully transformative effect it is already having on education, and democracy - in both positive and negative ways - might just chill you to the bone and give you goosebumps at the same time. This was recorded a week out from the 2024 US election, so please understand why I’m Osher isn’t commenting on something which is now glaringly obvious to us as a community. He’s in the past. It’s simple time travel. And there’s no better person to speak to about that than Dr Matt Agnew. Masculinity, medicine, and making the most of setbacks (w/ Michael Klim)

Michael Klim is one of the most physically recognisable athletes in our country. The secret to a long relationship (as long as it’s with other members of Grinspoon) w Phil Jamieson

If you’re in a long-term relationship, chances are at some point you’ve at least explored ways that you can navigate things when you disagree.Because ultimately it’s not the good bits that keep us together, it’s the way we handle the difficult bits. The slightly handy part of an long-term intimate relationship is that when words fail you, there’s the stuff that you hear about in Marvin Gaye songs. But what if when you get that feeling you can’t access the sexual healing because you’re in a band and rule #1 of being in a band is don’t sleep with anyone in the band.Osher’s guest today is Phil Jamieson is the lead singer of Grinspoon, one of Australia’s greatest rock bands. True road warriors, they’re about to head out for a colossal adventure around the nation, in some places having to create venues, because the places they once played no longer exist. If you’ve never thought about what it takes to put a band on the road, and indeed keep a band together for as long as they’ve been together - this conversation will shed a lot of light on the realities of life as a member of a band which is truly a household name.‌Subscribe to the newsletter here: http://oshergunsberg.substack.com/ Hosted on Acast. When creative superpowers combine, it makes me want to dance. (with Paul Dempsey and Bernard Fanning)

What would you do if you had nothing to prove? If you were free to make any project you liked, in whatever shape you liked, to reflect your experience in that moment? Better yet - what if you got to do all of this with a close mate you’ve known for over 20 years? That pretty much describes the conversation Osher has around the new music from Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey. Two seminal Australian singer songwriters, they both have enormous careers and a legacy of music which has been the soundtrack to Australian life for nearly 30 years. Yet when they team up - the music they make sounds nothing like Powderfinger or Something for Kate - yet is still so very distinctly them. It’s a fast yes, or a slow no (and four more career-saving wisdoms from the 101 Rules of Showbusiness)

In today’s instalment of Osher’s 101 Rules of Show Business, he explores a rule taught to him by Charlie Clausen (TOFOP, Home and Away, DadPod.)It’s not exclusive to entertainment, and it works everywhere because decisive execution is the difference between an idea and a result.Say you’re pitching Netflix your fake news show. You’re in the meeting, you show them the reel, you answer their questions really well - If they love it, you’ll know pretty quickly.Sometimes in the room, sometimes the next day.However.Every day that passes is a clue that there’s something else going on…Luckily there’s a way to handle that outcome, which you’ll learn today along with four other vital bits of guidance for life in the entertainment industry (or any other industry for that matter). To listen to the other 24 rules, or every episode ever - head to oshergunsberg.com  Hosted on Acast. What is the very modeling of modern masculinity?

Following Maggie Dent’s appearance on the show this week - Osher takes a moment to reflect on what it even means to be a man in 2024. The way we have reframed the role and place of women in our community gives us a far more wonderful world to be in than 30, 50 or 100 years ago. For all of us. Feminism has given women the choice to be feminine, masculine, a CEO, a stay at home mum, girly, sexual, powerful, none of the above or all of the above, each of those choices to be seen as a choice to be respected - and yet I wonder - while we have been rightly reframing the role and place of women in our community, and seeing the benefits that we all share from that, have we been paying attention to addding similar amounts of choice to the roles and place of men and boys in our community, or a similar amount of respect to those choices? Additionally, there’s a surprising amount of talk about Australian rivers in this episode (it all ties in to the idea, we promise). Never Eat The Last Muffin (and four other vital rules in the 101 Rules of Showbusiness)

In Osher’s ongoing series “101 Rules of Showbusiness”, today he explores rules 20-24 which include the vital rule 23: NEVER EAT THE LAST MUFFIN. You never know who just walked past the lunch table and spied that choc chip delight, and how much the day can go sideways if it’s not there when they’re done filming/exploding/fixing something. Always ask everyone if they want it. This rule also explains why sometimes you won’t see a full muffin alone on the tray, but 1/2 or 1/4 of a muffin sitting there - because nobody wanted to break the rule… For more (and for every episode ever) go to oshergunsberg.com Hosted on Acast. Raising boys into respectful men (w/ Abby Coleman)

Abby is the Abby in Stav, Matt and Abby on B105 in Brisbane. She’s a brilliant radio announcer, mum of three boys and the woman who married Osher and Audrey. This conversation is one Osher has been wanting to have for a long time, mostly because it debriefs a few things about that radio job in a way that hasn't been spoken about before. Osher and Abby also cover the importance of sleep and mindset about sleep, the impact of framing situations and how eliminating one word from your vocabulary can change everything, and then we get really deep. Abby talks very openly about her experiences with eating disorders, how she navigates gender dynamics in the radio workplace, and her work with Small Steps for Hannah, which is a foundation set up to prevent domestic violence. ‌ Eating Disorder Support: Butterfly Foundation: 1800 33 4673 Sexual assault support services: 1800 Respect national helpline: 1800 737 732 Sexual Assault Counselling Australia: 1800 385 578 Bravehearts (support for child sexual abuse survivors): 1800 272 831 Lifeline (24-hour Crisis Line): 131 114 Victims of Crime Helpline: 1800 819 817 Hosted on Acast. When being on time makes you 20 minutes late (and four more bits of wisdom from the 101 Rules of Show Business)

In this episode Osher explores rules 14-19 of his 101 RULES OF SHOW BUSINESS, including this cracker he learned from Dan Machpherson: Rule Number 16: If you arrive at your call time, you’re 20min late. The time on your call sheet isn’t the time you’re pulling into the carpark. It’s not the time you’re making a cuppa in the kitchen. It’s the time you’re ready to go. Get there 20 mins early to do all that other stuff, because working in entertainment is a dance between hundreds of people trying to coordinate perfectly - and you need to be where you’re told to be exactly when you’re told to be there so that everyone else can do their job too. The true meaning of courage and facing the brutal cost of war, plus some solid SurvivorAU stories (w/ Mark Wales)

When it comes to foreign policy, sometimes a credible military consequence is required to ensure that diplomacy can work. Keeping peace between nations is vital, however sometimes the decision to move to violence is made by someone else - and then a government has few options on the table. But what happens when our government’s decision to send our military into a war zone under the auspices of protecting our country no longer serves us? Today Osher speaks with Mark Wales, a former SAS commander who’s probably going to surprise you with his views on national security. Mark joined the army at 17 and eventually made ten deployments, including Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands, Iraq, Afghanistan, Fiji and Lebanon. This conversation dives deep on sleep, mental health, gun violence, trauma, parenting, and life in the military. And don’t worry. Osher absolutely asked him about winning Survivor. Mark is not only a fascinating man whose geopolitical knowledge is super-sharp, he’s a fabulous author. He’s penned a best-selling autobiography “Survivor”, and his latest book “Outrider” is a dystopian sci-fi novel set in the woody forests of Victoria. If you like this episode be sure to check out Osher’s chat with former SEAL team sniper Brandon Tyler Webb, a cracking conversation with fellow Brisbanian Paul De Gelder and for the other side of things, legendary war correspondent Michael Ware. The most powerful productivity and wellbeing technique is way more fun than you imagine

Anyone who’s said “I’ll race you” to get their kid to the bathroom/dinner table/daycare/doctor - knows that working play into things is a very effective motivator. In recent times it’s been called “Gamification”. But how much play is in your life? And besides getting things done - what other value can play bring to you as an adult? Following on from his chat with Dr Ali Abdaal (https://www.oshergunsberg.com/the-secret-to-maximising-productivity-is-play-and-other-insights-from-dr-ali-abdaal/), Osher explores the surprising benefits of using play as an adult - as well as some mind-blowing examples of how some of the biggest brains every to walk the earth deliberately used play to in their work.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The secret to maximising productivity is play (and other insights from Dr. Ali Abdaal)

Dr Ali Abdaal is a world-renowned expert in Productivity. He spent a few years working with the NHS in the UK before leaning full time into the videos he was making, initially to help other med students pass their exams. This grew into a larger offering around making sure your work ethic and your values are aligned in the best way possible… Today Osher and Ali speak about scientific ways of approaching productivity, methods to make sure that we’re doing more good work in less time, and therefore giving us the free time to recharge, recoup, reflect, and perhaps just think - so that when we’re back on the tools we come with a fresh perspective, fresh ideas, and the ability to produce higher quality work than if we’re up at 3am trying to finish something. He’s a fascinating man, his YouTube is epic - and his latest book is a New York Times bestseller, “Feel Good Productivity“.If you've never done a values quiz before, they can be very valuable to help with decision making: https://azimuthpsych.com/values-navigator‌To get in touch with Osher, get on the newsletter and listen to every episode ever, head to oshergunsberg.com Hosted on Acast. Rule 2: It’s show business, not show friends (And three other fundamental rules of Show-business that you will find useful)

During a recent gameshow development workshop in front a live audience, Osher started to explain to the audience the way certain elements of the format worked together, and why some suggestions that the audience made while interesting - wouldn’t actually work. ‌ His reasoning “it’s one of the rules of show-business, you always…” ‌ Feeling it was high time to compile a list of advice that has its roots in the entertainment industry - in the hope that these lessons can be of value to people who work in other areas, Osher sat down and wrote a list. ‌ He got to triple figures before he hit record (don’t worry, there’s only four here). ‌ What do you think?
