Ep 903Big Lessons from 2023 (8): EP 506 Tom Carroll
In the world of professional surfing, Tom Carroll is a legend. Through the 80s and 90s, he dominated professional surfing, becoming the first surfer to sign a multi-million dollar contract. In 1983 and 1984 he twice achieved the pinnacle of his sport when he became back to back world champion. But it’s what Tom has achieved out of the water which is possibly even more incredible. In today’s episode he talks about how he found him self sliding down the slippery slope of addiction, how that addiction began to take everything that he loved away from him, had him trapped in a cycle of drug abuse that was heading towards a very grim end.But Tom knew he needed help, and thankfully he was able to get that help. And it was at South Pacific Private that Tom first got help.I’m no stranger to talking about recovery from drugs and alcohol - it’s a part of my story and a huge reason why I started this show. Because I didn’t know that not drinking and using was an option.I wanted to have conversations out there which could demonstrate that there was an alternative and that help was available if you needed it.And because of that, I’m grateful to partner with South Pacific Private to bring you this episode. South Pacific Private is Australia's leading treatment centre, and has been treating the underlying causes of addiction, anxiety, and depression in Australia for 30 years. If that sounds like something you’re interested in you can take a free self-assessment for a variety of conditions on their website at southpacificprivate.com.au .And if you need them - Their team is available to chat 7 days a week on 1800 063 332Tom Carroll is a recovering addict, and his journey of redemption is nothing short of inspiring. It's a story of resilience, strength, and finding hope even in the darkest of times. He’s an incredible wise man, and even if you don’t have a problem with any substance, gambling, or any other kind of addiction - the wisdom Tom has to share about untreated trauma, and taking responsibility for your choices and your situation is absolutely transformative.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? What would you have liked to accomplish by 25? Was being the co-founder and CEO of an independent Australian news commentary platform providing informed, progressive opinions on subjects that sit at the intersection of feminist, social and political issues on your list? What about having completed a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Master of Publishing, Editing and Writing?Today I am joined by Hannah Ferguson who is the co-founder and CEO of Cheek Media Co. Hannah has written and released her first novel; Bite Back. A ground-breaking debut that launches in and tackles many of the thorniest social and political issues facing young women in Australia today. With her book Bite Back, Hannah leads the charge on the discourse we’ve been missing, from how to have hard conversations with loved ones, to the realities of reforming a criminal justice system that isn’t fit for purpose and the future of the #MeToo movement.Hannah and I have an in depth discussion where we talk about the importance of media and legal literacy, the value of critical thinking, and the use of fear as a commodity.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 899Big Lessons from 2023 (5): EP 498 Grace Tame
Grace Tame is an Australian of the Year, author, and a voice that's shaking the foundations of our society. She gained prominence for her advocacy and determination to overturn Tasmanian laws that prevented survivors from speaking out about their experiences through the Let Her Speak campaign.Until April 6 2020 it was illegal for victims to identify themselves as the victim of such a crime. If they did speak about what happened two them, they could face six months in prison. The law was probably brought in to protect people from being identified - however if those survivors chose to share their stories, it would be illegal to do so.In a world where conversations about consent and survivor support are more crucial than ever, Grace has been a driving force in raising awareness and demanding change. Her courage and determination have paved the way for important discussions that challenge the status quo.A status quo that does not like to be challenged. The rancid stacks-on that she’s had to deal with as an adult is utterly shameful. The things she has had to endure for speaking out about her abuse is just too awful to behold. And the things that happen to her have all been perpetrated by men. Entitled adult men.Grace Tame is a powerful, brilliant person and I’m so glad you’re going to get a chance to engage with her today.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Josh Szeps is a broadcaster, political satirist, and television presenter, widely recognized for the engaging work he did on the ABC network here in Australia. With a diverse background having hosted shows like Weekend Breakfast, NSW Afternoons, and The Drum, Josh brings a wealth of experience and insight to our conversation.I get challenged every single time I speak with Josh, and I relish in the practice of being challenged on my ideas by someone who I trust and consider a great friend - because it’s good practice to not feel like I myself am being challenged, just the idea.I take big breaths when I speak to Josh, but I love it. He’s got a brain on him and I can’t wait for you to hear this chat. Josh has an unflinching commitment to social justice, and is a powerful voice for change. He’s absolutely committed to making the world a more just and equitable place which I’m sure you’ll be inspired by, just as I am.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 893Big Lessons from 2023 (1): EP 501 Ben and Chris
Have you ever thought about the story behind your favourite band? How did they create their sound, how did they become a world-wide sensation, how did it all start? In 1994, three young teenage boys from Newcastle, Dan, Ben and Chris aged 14, entered a competition to record a song at the studios of the station Triple J. Little did they know, when Dan’s Mum filled out the entry form and sent it in, along with a cassette tape and a photo of them on a stoop of a house, that they would become world-wide sensations.Earlier this year I was joined by Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou. This year they wrote and released their book, Love & Pain, which takes you on the journey of silverchair. Silverchair were more than just a band, they were a brotherhood. As they join me for a conversation, I learn about what really made them something special.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 890511: Brad Guy on Surviving a skydiving accident, PTSD, and the best pun of 2023.
Brad Guy literally fell out of a plane and miraculously survived a skydiving accident. The physical injuries that he suffered from are one thing, but it's Brad's extraordinary story of how devastating a problem that PTSD became in his life, and how he tried to self medicate his way out of it, it's that which is truly compelling.Brad's extraordinary description not only of his accident, but also the hypervigilance which started to control his life, is something that is unfortunately all too common for people who have experienced trauma in their lives. If you've been delaying getting help, or there's someone you love who needs help for whatever reasons, but won't seek that help - this episode is full of brilliant truly relatable moments that could just be the thing to change the status quo. Once you hear the kind of horror that Brad was living with day in and day out, and what is life is like now, it's a strong case for the idea that there is actually a way to live your life that's not a constant spiral of pain. And that with help and a commitment to treatment, things can and will get a whole lot better.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 887510: Ash London and her gentle, compassionate disengagement from a long-term relationship with the church
Men, do you ever ask yourself what happens to my wife’s career when the baby comes along? How long will she take off work? Will that time off be beneficial to our family but detrimental to her career? When will she go back to work? Can she go back to work and have the same job requirements as when she left to become a mother? These are common questions mothers asks themselves over and over, before becoming a mother and once they become a mother.Today I am joined by Ash London, in 2021 she became a mother to her son Buddy Ray. Before Ash was a mother she was radio talk host shows of a popular night time music show called “Ash London Live”, she travelled the world and interviewed huge stars such Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Ed Sheeran to name a few. She was known for her close relationships with these artists because she was so invested in their music and shared the same passion.Right now Ash is very much wrestling with the idea of having another child and is not afraid to say that she misses work or that a lot of her identity was wrapped up in her work. So why are women afraid to admit that? And why is that a hesitance for mother’s when it comes to trying again for baby number two and growing the family.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 884509: Lessons from a career in Remote Psychology with Prof Judith Gullifer
When I moved to America, and over the following ten years of living there - to be without our public health system really opened my eyes to how much of an incredible asset that is to our country. That the standard of care that is available to those of us with the fewest resources was equivalent to the kind of care only the most wealthy people in the US could afford absolutely blew my mind. But a part of protecting our public health system is to make it as efficient as possible. To watch for wasteful spending, and to be sure that the best outcomes can happen for the most amount of people with the lowest cost. It’s not perfect by any stretch.Yet it’s still a superpower that we in Australia can be proud of.So how do you make things more efficient? How do we get better outcomes for people particularly when it comes to mental health?Thankfully my guest today is an expert in these matters.Professor Judith Gullifer is the Deputy Head of School and Senior Director of Education in the School of Psychological Science at Monash University, who are the sponsors of this episode.Drawing on her time spent as a psychologist in rural Australia, Judith now works to make sure that health care professionals entering the workforce are equipped with everything they need to help people in the best way possible.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 881508: The Story Behind the new Julian Dennison film “Uproar” (or how Paul Middleditch and Sonia Whiteman made a hit movie, and stayed married. )
There’s a new film called ‘Uproar’ that comes out in Australia this week, it stars Julian Dennison, Minnie Driver and the exquisite Rhys Darby.Set around the 1981 springbok tour of NZ, it’s as hilarious as it is staggering in how powerfully it tells the story of a kid trying to figure out who they are, at the same time as a community trying to figure out who they are - and indeed the start of a whole country trying to figure out who they are. What is wonderful about this film is that it is based on a true story. The life story of the brilliant director Paul Middleditch. Paul has been on the show before - he’s the absolute genius behind the kind of commercials that you never ever forget, the brilliant series of ads for Australian Lamb the unforgettable commercials for Carlton Draught (including one which involved hundreds of extras charging across a field towards each other) and the hands-down classic Yellow Pages campaign with the immortal line “Not Happy Jan”.What makes this film even more unique is that while Paul is directing a film that he literally lived, the screenplay was written by his extraordinarily talented wife, the acclaimed writer and director Sonia Whiteman. Now as I mention in this episode - it’s rare that my wife and I can build something from Ikea without getting shitty with each other. And here is a couple who’ve been together for 23 years, with a beautiful family, managing to take an idea from inception to pitch to production - and they’re still together. The film is magnificent. I cried twice, Audrey cried about five times. But how these two work together and the way they speak about each other - that’s proper couple goals.I adore these two humans. I can’t wait for you to get to know them.SPONSORS: Canstar - download the App here https://onelink.to/canstar-bty, then use the code BTY10, get a $10 gift card on registration.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 879Better Make it Quick: Camilla Wright
Let’s go to 2014 to revisit my conversation with my first ever internet friend Camilla Wright. Camilla is the founder an editor of the internet’s longest-running, deepest-digging gossipmongers, Popbitch which has been in action since late 1999. Popbitch is easily, if not the very first internet pop culture gossip sites or gossip newsletters which set the standard of internet reporting from celebrity culture to pop culture in the new millennium. Camilla is a remarkable woman who left a career in serious political journalism covering Eastern Europe as it emerged from communism in the late 90s to start a weekly email about pop stars behaving badly.SPONSORS: Canstar - download the App here https://onelink.to/canstar-bty, then use the code BTY10, get a $10 gift card on registration.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 878507: What happens when Entitlement outweighs Empathy? A conversation about Consent with Chanel Contos.
My guest today was the catalyst for fundamentally changing how consent education works in Australia. In 2021 Chanel posted on Instagram:“Have you or a close friend been sexually assaulted by someone who went to an all-boys school in Sydney?”Within 24 hours, 204 People had responded “yes” to the question, and then she had her first ever live TV interview 72 hours later.Over that weekend her friend started a website for Chanel, where she collected 6000 testimonies during the first three weeks. She started a petition demanding consent classes and 45,000 signatures later and exactly a year from the date she first posted on Instagram – after a lot of meetings and phone calls – the nine education ministers in Australia unanimously agreed and then publicly announced that they would mandate consent education.Chanel Contos is a force of nature.A fierce advocate for consent education and the brilliant brain behind the Teach Us Consent campaign. She's been instrumental in raising awareness about sexual assault and consent in Australia.Today we discuss the challenges of navigating relationships in the dating app era and explore the disturbing influence of pornography on our understanding of consent.Chanel highlights the need to extend empathy beyond our immediate circles, teaching both young men and women how they can prioritize their own desires – but most importantly, saying no when it matters most.Chanel has some valuable lessons to impart – not just about preventing sexual violence but also around creating a culture of respect and understanding. She strongly believes that showing young men that healthy, consensual relationships are something they should aspire to can ultimately help change the world. Her book, “Consent Laid Bare” is absolutely stunning. It’s out right now.SPONSORS: Canstar - download the App here https://onelink.to/canstar-bty, then use the code BTY10, get a $10 gift card on registration.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 875506: Caught between insanity and death, surfing icon Tom Carroll’s greatest triumph happened well away from the ocean
When you think of an someone who’s addicted to methamphetamines, where their life is, where they live, what their job is, what their relationship with their family is like, what it the image that comes to your mind?I’ll bet that picture isn’t a successful middle-aged man, with a beautiful home near the beach, a man who is a father of three daughters.I’ll also bet that you didn’t picture Australian surfing legend Tom Carroll. But at one point, that’s exactly what Tom’s life had become. He’s an incredible wise man, and even if you don’t have a problem with any substance, gambling, or any other kind of addiction - the wisdom Tom has to share about untreated trauma, and taking responsibility for your choices and your situation is absolutely transformative.SPONSORS: Canstar - download the App here https://onelink.to/canstar-bty, then use the code BTY10, get a $10 gift card on registration.Got suggestions for the podcast? Ep 872505: Bardot and Beyond with Belinda Chapple, the Girl in the Band
Belinda Chapple. She was a member of the massive Australian girl group Bardot.Bardot formed in 1999 on the reality TV series Popstars on Channel 7.Popstars filmed the whole process, from auditioning thousands of ladies, down to the top 25 and then eventually the top five that formed Bardot. From there they moved into a house together and we watched their every moment for the first three months of Bardot.Bardot released two albums, were nominated for three ARIA awards and had two national tours, before their abrupt end in 2002.The band then consisted of Belinda Chapple, Sophie Monk, Sally Polihronas and Tiffany Wood and an official statement was released to say “Bardot confirm their mutual decision to end the group's career.”Wildly I was there for the band’s final ever performance on the Channel V stage - the 2nd of May in 2002. Which I didn’t actually recall until getting ready for this interview, I was still drinking at the time and dealing with a lot of PTSD shit. It makes sense I don’t remember it. But when I watched it, you see all four women in tears, marking the end of a once close band.Belinda has released a book to tell us what really happened. The end of the band was not mutual and despite the band reportedly earning up to 26 million in its first 12 months what the ladies actually got paid was a long way from that. But it’s not all about money. It’s about friendship, trust, and in some ways - betrayal.Belinda Chapple is a brilliant human, and her story is one I know you’ll get a lot out of.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Ep 869504: "The World is Changed by People that Turn Up" - Peter Garrett live at SXSW
Peter Garrett is easily one of the greatest living Australians. Not only through the immense cultural contribution of his music but also through his unyielding activism and long political career. In front of a packed room at the ICC in Darling Harbour, a room that we unfortunately had to turn people away from - Peter held us in the palm of his hand of an hour, generously sharing stories about his journey through music, activism, and politics all the while emphasizing the importance of connecting with people and making a difference. We discuss the fight for climate action and environmental protection, and explore the need for mobilization and organization to create lasting change.Peter is releasing new music, there’s a little out now and way more to come from his second solo album - so we touch upon topics like age and creativity, as well as how music continues to be a powerful tool for activism. He’s absolutely captivating to listen to. And when you hear the perspectives he shares, it's clear why Peter Garrett is such a huge figure in our cultural landscape.Peter Garrett last joined me in 2015 where we spoke about his memoir Big Blue Sky. Peter most recently sat down with me for a live recording at the SXSW conference that was held in Sydney, to talk about his new music. In March 2024 he will release a new solo album called The True North. It’s a deeply personal reflection on his singular journey, drawing inspiration and sustenance from the living colours of Australia’s natural environment and the sights and sounds of modern Oz. The album is now available for pre-order for its March 2024 release. In support of his new albums release Peter announced THE TRUE NORTH TOUR 2024 with PETER GARRETT THE ALTER EGOS. Ep 866503: Redefining masculinity with Dr Zac Seidler
Dr. Zac Seidler is a trailblazing clinical psychologist who has dedicated himself to addressing the overlooked crisis of male mental health. His groundbreaking work on an effective therapy model specifically designed for men, hopes to break down the barriers that prevent them from seeking support. Zac developed 'Men in Mind', a world-first, online training program for therapists. A program that aims to increase therapists' confidence and skills to engage, connect with, and respond more effectively to their male clients. ‌Like many of us, Zac’s purpose was locked in when he was a kid. At 11, Zac witnessed his own father's struggle with depression which he touches on today, so it’s no surprise that he’s on a mission to transform the mental health landscape. ‌Today we delve into the impact of masculinity on men's mental health, the role of societal expectations on men, and how we can all work together to support the well-being of the men in our lives. ‌Zac's insightful perspective offers a fresh look at these complex subjects while providing hope and practical solutions to make a real difference. ‌Dr Zac’s day job is pretty powerful - Global Director of Men's Health Research at Movember, and Senior Research Fellow with Orygen at The University of Melbourne. Ep 854499: Surfing champion Owen Wright and the greatest comeback story of all time
If you hurt yourself, doing something you loved, would you do it again? What if it was something that because you were so passionate about it that had you ended up becoming one of the best in the world at it - which then became a gig that paid really, really well - if you hurt yourself doing that thing do you think you would do it again? What if the injury was so severe that it nearly killed you, and it took you almost a year to be able to walk or talk again? Would you go back to it? Would you face the fear of getting hurt again? And even if you did go back, could you handle being nowhere near as capable as you once were? That is exactly what Australian Surfer Owen Wright did. In 2015 while surfing at pipeline, Owen sustained a traumatic brain injury that very nearly killed him. Unable to walk or talk properly, not only his life, but his surfing career hanging in the balance. The story of how Owen managed to regain mobility, and not only get back into the water, but to go on to win Australia’s first Olympic surfing medal in 2021, is easily one of the most inspirational comeback stories ever told. We are only beginning to speak with appropriate gravity about brain inquiries in sport. There’s a renewed emphasis on safeguarding athlete well-being and minimising brain injuries in Australian athletes. The Australian Government has even increased funding to enhance research and prevention of brain injuries and concussions in sports. As far as what you and I can do? We can have conversations around these injuries and start showing our children that safety matters, because a brain injury is life long and potentially life ending. Even if you’ve never surfed, or never had to rehab after a significant injury - this chat with Owen Wright is easily one of the most incredible conversations about what recovery from a traumatic injury actually looks like. Owen even generously shares about a near-death experience which left me utterly transfixed. Not everyone is going to learn how to walk again and then win an Olympic medal - but it’s important to know that it can be done. It’s a brilliant listen, and I hope you enjoy it.
