Belinda Chapple.She was a member of the massive Australian girl group Bardot.‌Bardot formed in 1999 on the reality TV series Popstars on Channel 7.‌Popstars filmed the whole process, from auditioning thousands of ladies, down to the top 25 and then eventually the top five that formed Bardot.‌From there they moved into a house together and we watched their every moment for the first three months of Bardot.‌Bardot released two albums, were nominated for three ARIA awards and had two national tours, before their abrupt end in 2002.‌The band then consisted of Belinda Chapple, Sophie Monk, Sally Polihronas and Tiffany Wood and an official statement was released to say “Bardot confirm their mutual decision to end the group's career.”‌Wildly I was there for the band’s final ever performance on the Channel V stage - the 2nd of May in 2002. Which I didn’t actually recall until getting ready for this interview, I was still drinking at the time and dealing with a lot of PTSD shit. It makes sense I don’t remember it. But when I watched it, you see all four women in tears, marking the end of a once close band.‌Belinda has released a book to tell us what really happened.‌The end of the band was not mutual and despite the band reportedly earning up to 26 million in its first 12 months what the ladies actually got paid was a long way from that.‌But it’s not all about money.It’s about friendship, trust, and in some ways - betrayal.‌Belinda Chapple is a brilliant human, and her story is one I know you’ll get a lot out of.Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Do you know the Scary Spice, Mel B was diagnosed with anxiety, dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD in 2019. That she is an advocate for domestic violence victims, being one herself? That not only is she a member of one of the most influential girl bands the Spice Girls, but she is also an author and mother. Taylor Hanson is the third member of the band Hanson along with Zac and Isaac. They first rose to fame with their hit 1997 song MMMBop. Little did they know, when Dan’s Mum filled out the entry form and sent it in, along with a cassette tape and a photo of them on a stoop of a house, that they would become world-wide sensations. Today I am joined by Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou. They’ve just written and released their book, Love & Pain, which takes you on the journey of silverchair. If you hurt yourself, doing something you loved, would you do it again? ‌ What if it was something that because you were so passionate about it that had you ended up becoming one of the best in the world at it - which then became a gig that paid really, really well - if you hurt yourself doing that thing do you think you would do it again? ‌ What if the injury was so severe that it nearly killed you, and it took you almost a year to be able to walk or talk again? Would you go back to it? Would you face the fear of getting hurt again? And even if you did go back, could you handle being nowhere near as capable as you once were? ‌ That is exactly what Australian Surfer Owen Wright did. ‌ In 2015 while surfing at pipeline, Owen sustained a traumatic brain injury that very nearly killed him. Unable to walk or talk properly, not only his life, but his surfing career hanging in the balance. ‌ The story of how Owen managed to regain mobility, and not only get back into the water, but to go on to win Australia’s first Olympic surfing medal in 2021, is easily one of the most inspirational comeback stories ever told. ‌ We are only beginning to speak with appropriate gravity about brain inquiries in sport. There’s a renewed emphasis on safeguarding athlete well-being and minimising brain injuries in Australian athletes. The Australian Government has even increased funding to enhance research and prevention of brain injuries and concussions in sports. As far as what you and I can do? We can have conversations around these injuries and start showing our children that safety matters, because a brain injury is life long and potentially life ending. ‌ Even if you’ve never surfed, or never had to rehab after a significant injury - this chat with Owen Wright is easily one of the most incredible conversations about what recovery from a traumatic injury actually looks like. Owen even generously shares about a near-death experience which left me utterly transfixed. Not everyone is going to learn how to walk again and then win an Olympic medal - but it’s important to know that it can be done. ‌ It’s a brilliant listen, and I hope you enjoy it. How would you feel if your identity, who you felt as a person - was denied time and again. What if it was at a national level? That’s what my guest today goes through on a daily basis - because there’s a narrative about her that isn’t really about her. Luckily she’s a fierce person who will fight to be seen and heard for who she is. However the way this happens to her tells us a lot about how we as a community in Australia see women, see survivors of child sexual abuse, and how little we hold our media to account.Grace Tame is an Australian of the Year, author, and a voice that's shaking the foundations of our society. She gained prominence for her advocacy and determination to overturn Tasmanian laws that prevented survivors from speaking out about their experiences through the Let Her Speak campaign. Until April 6 2020 it was illegal for victims to identify themselves as the victim of such a crime. If they did speak about what happened two them, they could face six months in prison. The law was probably brought in to protect people from being identified - however if those survivors chose to share their stories, it would be illegal to do so. The forced anonymity that brings only reinforces the stigma and shame in our community around victims of such crimes. ‌ Meanwhile these laws protected the people who committed these crimes. The same laws that used the word “relationship” in relation to these crimes - the crime was to “Maintain a sexual relationship with a person under 17.” You can clearly hear how that particular word changes how you think about what happened between the victim and the perpetrator. ‌ In a world where conversations about consent and survivor support are more crucial than ever, Grace has been a driving force in raising awareness and demanding change. Her courage and determination have paved the way for important discussions that challenge the status quo. A status quo that does not like to be challenged. The rancid stacks-on that she’s had to deal with as an adult is utterly shameful. The things she has had to endure for speaking out about her abuse is just too awful to behold. And the things that happen to her have all been perpetrated by men. Entitled adult men. ‌ Grace Tame is a powerful, brilliant person and I’m so glad you’re going to get a chance to engage with her today. How long do you think it would take you heal from an illness that changed your life? Picture this - you’re 19 have just lost both yours arms and legs after contracting meningococcal disease. How long do you think it would take you to heal? Well for Tom Nash, who survived the life-threatening illness to becoming a quadruple amputee at the age of nineteen, his story is nothing short of remarkable. However it isn’t until now, in his forties that Tom believes he has truly begun heal. When I first met Tom in 2019 we spoke about his battle with meningococcal septicaemia, learning who your real friends are and relearning how to what you love. In more recent years, Tom has become an in-demand keynote speaker, regularly presenting ideas and philosophies steeped in lessons learnt from a life of overcoming adversity. His TEDx Sydney talk, The Perks of Being a Pirate, has been viewed over 2.5 million times. His experiences have given him a unique outlook on life and a belief that while everyone has their own personal challenges, its how you deal with them that matters. Dr. Prue Gibson is a prominent Australian author and esteemed research academic specializing in plant studies at the School of Art and Design, University of New South Wales. As an author and educator, she has contributed significantly to the understanding of the relationships between humans, nature, and creativity. When was the last time you had a conversation with someone that was uncomfortable? When you heard something they said, and you got the floods. Your heart rate spiked, your hands started to shake, you wanted to not just show them how wrong they were for saying that, but to utterly dominate them into submission? Did you stop to think about why it was uncomfortable? Were they being out and out racist? Misogynistic? Cruel? Were they pointing out something in you that you don’t like, and instead of realising that indeed you hold views that you yourself find awful - you projected that anger back on to them? For example, you’re 100% against vigilante justice, and when someone asks you - but what if it was your child that was the victim, do the feelings of rage that arise inside you make you so uncomfortable that they’re even there that you get upset at the other person for suggesting you would ever carry out an extrajudicial beating? Uncomfortable conversations are vital to have. And if you’re not very good at them, thankfully Josh Szeps is - and you can hear him having uncomfortable conversations every week on his podcast of the same name. Broden Kelly is a podcaster, musician and one-third of the landmark Australian comedy outfit Aunty Donna - they’re not for everyone, and that’s OK.‌ There’s a solid broad line in the middle of our community where a joke is very obvious. And as you get out to the edges, it can get darker, stranger, weirder, more uncomfortable, and sometimes - just sometimes you can loop all the way back around again through all of that discomfort to absolute hilarity. It’s that particular path for me which makes Aunty Donna one of the most astounding comedy exports out country has ever made. Their absolutely groundbreaking Netflix show is fucking bonkers. If it’s not for you - that’s fine. Not everything is for everyone. However the three core people who make up Aunty Donna are smart, delightful, loving humans who have a lot to offer outside of making sure there’s room for pud. Broden came around to my echoey Melbourne apartment t o share the incredible journey he and Aunty Donna have been on, the absolute pinnacle moment where they changed the trajectory of their careers all by deciding the intent behind their performance, and wonderfully - we talk a lot about footy - particularly AFL. ‌Broden has a magnificent podcast, The Footy with Broden Kelly. I love it because he talks about sport in a way that has about noting to do with stats, with scandals, or with gambling - instead he talks about sport from an emotional place I’ve never heard described before. I came late to football, both AFL and NRL - however the way Broden talks about it, it speaks to me in a way that the blossom-nosed ex-players on the telly absolutely don’t. For decades, Dean Yates decades was the ideal warzone correspondent: courageous, compassionate, dedicated. After years of facing the worst moments imaginable - including the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami, it was one final incident which undid him. In July 2007, two of his staff members were brutally gunned down by an American helicopter in Iraq. What followed was an unravelling of everything Dean thought he knew of himself. His PTSD was compounded by his moral wound - the devastation of what he thought he knew of the world and his own character and beliefs. To get better took a while. Years of treatment, including several stints inside a psychiatric facility. But he did get better, and is doing a lot better - and it’s so important to know that you can treat these kind of issues. Your life doesn’t have to be horrible. But you have to want to get better, and you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get there.
