Ep 851498: Grace Tame isn't who the news tells you she is

How would you feel if your identity, who you felt as a person - was denied time and again. What if it was at a national level? That’s what my guest today goes through on a daily basis - because there’s a narrative about her that isn’t really about her. Luckily she’s a fierce person who will fight to be seen and heard for who she is. However the way this happens to her tells us a lot about how we as a community in Australia see women, see survivors of child sexual abuse, and how little we hold our media to account.Grace Tame is an Australian of the Year, author, and a voice that's shaking the foundations of our society. She gained prominence for her advocacy and determination to overturn Tasmanian laws that prevented survivors from speaking out about their experiences through the Let Her Speak campaign. Until April 6 2020 it was illegal for victims to identify themselves as the victim of such a crime. If they did speak about what happened two them, they could face six months in prison. The law was probably brought in to protect people from being identified - however if those survivors chose to share their stories, it would be illegal to do so. The forced anonymity that brings only reinforces the stigma and shame in our community around victims of such crimes. ‌ Meanwhile these laws protected the people who committed these crimes. The same laws that used the word “relationship” in relation to these crimes - the crime was to “Maintain a sexual relationship with a person under 17.” You can clearly hear how that particular word changes how you think about what happened between the victim and the perpetrator. ‌ In a world where conversations about consent and survivor support are more crucial than ever, Grace has been a driving force in raising awareness and demanding change. Her courage and determination have paved the way for important discussions that challenge the status quo. A status quo that does not like to be challenged. The rancid stacks-on that she’s had to deal with as an adult is utterly shameful. The things she has had to endure for speaking out about her abuse is just too awful to behold. And the things that happen to her have all been perpetrated by men. Entitled adult men. ‌ Grace Tame is a powerful, brilliant person and I’m so glad you’re going to get a chance to engage with her today. Ep 845496: Finding Joy, Triumph, and Love in Life with Quadruple Amputee (and Pirate) Tom Nash

How long do you think it would take you heal from an illness that changed your life? Picture this - you’re 19 have just lost both yours arms and legs after contracting meningococcal disease. How long do you think it would take you to heal? Well for Tom Nash, who survived the life-threatening illness to becoming a quadruple amputee at the age of nineteen, his story is nothing short of remarkable. However it isn’t until now, in his forties that Tom believes he has truly begun heal. When I first met Tom in 2019 we spoke about his battle with meningococcal septicaemia, learning who your real friends are and relearning how to what you love. In more recent years, Tom has become an in-demand keynote speaker, regularly presenting ideas and philosophies steeped in lessons learnt from a life of overcoming adversity. His TEDx Sydney talk, The Perks of Being a Pirate, has been viewed over 2.5 million times. His experiences have given him a unique outlook on life and a belief that while everyone has their own personal challenges, its how you deal with them that matters. Tom’s journey is a testament to the human spirit's strength and the power of determination. Today I sit down with Tom Nash to talk about his new book "Hook, Line and Sinner" and we discuss his healing and how he transformed adversity into an opportunity for growth and how he continues to inspire others with his story of perseverance and accomplishment. Ep 839The Importance of having uncomfortable conversations in a comfortable community with Josh Szeps

When was the last time you had a conversation with someone that was uncomfortable? When you heard something they said, and you got the floods. Your heart rate spiked, your hands started to shake, you wanted to not just show them how wrong they were for saying that, but to utterly dominate them into submission? Did you stop to think about why it was uncomfortable? Were they being out and out racist? Misogynistic? Cruel? Were they pointing out something in you that you don’t like, and instead of realising that indeed you hold views that you yourself find awful - you projected that anger back on to them? For example, you’re 100% against vigilante justice, and when someone asks you - but what if it was your child that was the victim, do the feelings of rage that arise inside you make you so uncomfortable that they’re even there that you get upset at the other person for suggesting you would ever carry out an extrajudicial beating? Uncomfortable conversations are vital to have. And if you’re not very good at them, thankfully Josh Szeps is - and you can hear him having uncomfortable conversations every week on his podcast of the same name. Josh is a broadcaster, political satirist, and television presenter, widely recognized for his engaging work on the ABC network here in Australia. With a diverse background hosting shows like Weekend Breakfast, NSW Afternoons, and The Drum, Josh brings a wealth of experience and insight to our conversation. I get challenged every single time I speak with Josh, and I relish in the practice of being challenged on my ideas by someone who I trust and consider a great friend - because it’s good practice to not feel like I myself am being challenged, just the idea. I take big breaths when I speak to Josh, but I love it. He’s got a brain on him and I can’t wait for you to hear this chat. Josh has an unflinching commitment to social justice, and is a powerful voice for change. He’s absolutely committed to making the world a more just and equitable place which I’m sure you’ll be inspired by, just as I am. Ep 833492: How Changing Intention of Action Changed a Career - with Broden Kelly from Aunty Donna

Broden Kelly is a podcaster, musician and one-third of the landmark Australian comedy outfit Aunty Donna - they’re not for everyone, and that’s OK.‌ There’s a solid broad line in the middle of our community where a joke is very obvious. And as you get out to the edges, it can get darker, stranger, weirder, more uncomfortable, and sometimes - just sometimes you can loop all the way back around again through all of that discomfort to absolute hilarity. It’s that particular path for me which makes Aunty Donna one of the most astounding comedy exports out country has ever made. Their absolutely groundbreaking Netflix show is fucking bonkers. If it’s not for you - that’s fine. Not everything is for everyone. However the three core people who make up Aunty Donna are smart, delightful, loving humans who have a lot to offer outside of making sure there’s room for pud. Broden came around to my echoey Melbourne apartment t o share the incredible journey he and Aunty Donna have been on, the absolute pinnacle moment where they changed the trajectory of their careers all by deciding the intent behind their performance, and wonderfully - we talk a lot about footy - particularly AFL. ‌Broden has a magnificent podcast, The Footy with Broden Kelly. I love it because he talks about sport in a way that has about noting to do with stats, with scandals, or with gambling - instead he talks about sport from an emotional place I’ve never heard described before. I came late to football, both AFL and NRL - however the way Broden talks about it, it speaks to me in a way that the blossom-nosed ex-players on the telly absolutely don’t. Ep 830491: Just get up and go for a walk (across Australia) with adventurer Sophie Matterson

My guest is Sophie Matterson. Ep 829489: A path back from PTSD with former war correspondent Dean Yates

For decades, Dean Yates decades was the ideal warzone correspondent: courageous, compassionate, dedicated. After years of facing the worst moments imaginable - including the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami, it was one final incident which undid him. In July 2007, two of his staff members were brutally gunned down by an American helicopter in Iraq. What followed was an unravelling of everything Dean thought he knew of himself. His PTSD was compounded by his moral wound - the devastation of what he thought he knew of the world and his own character and beliefs. To get better took a while. Years of treatment, including several stints inside a psychiatric facility. But he did get better, and is doing a lot better - and it’s so important to know that you can treat these kind of issues. Your life doesn’t have to be horrible. But you have to want to get better, and you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get there. This conversation talks about Moral Injury, PTSD, describes some pretty reprehensible acts of violence, and crosses into discussing suicide. ***** If you feel like voting for me for the 2023 Gold Logie, you can do so at https://www.tvweeklogies.com.au/Stay up to date on more upcoming NTNNNNN shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else? Ep 818487: You're Not To Blame for Tech Addiction with Prof Gaia Bernstein

Professor Gaia Bernstein is an expert in privacy and policy law, and is co-director of Gibbons Institute of Law Science and Technology. Her latest book "Unwired: Gaining Control over Addictive Technologies" explores device addiction and what it’s doing to us. Rather than blaming users, the book really shatters the illusion that we autonomously choose how to spend our time online. It shifts the moral responsibility and accountability for solutions to corporations. Drawing lessons from the tobacco and food industries, the book demonstrates why government regulation is necessary to curb technology addiction. If you’re concerned about your screen time, or what too much screen time is doing to you let alone your kids - this episode is an epic. Ep 812485: Getting Deep with Zoe Marshall

Zoe Marshall is a podcaster, broadcaster and entrepreneur from Australia. She’s worked in media for over a decade, from writing a weekly newspaper column to hosting a radio who with her husband Benji Marshall - a prominent football player in Australia. Zoe’s podcast “The Deep” is well worth the listen - it does what it says on the box, deep and intimate conversations which for my money normalise the idea that no person is just one thing. There’s many facets that make up a jewel - even if the public only see one side of it.Stay up to date on more upcoming NTNNNNN shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else? Ep 809484: Lessons for Competing in the Endurance Sport of Life, with Rich Roll

If you’re completely unaware of who Rich Roll is - let me bring you up to speed.A star of the Stanford University Swim Team, eventually alcohol and addiction played havoc with his life and career, a path that lead him to jails, institutions and ultimately rehab at the age of 31.He got sober, and got his career back on track - however on the eve of his 40th birthday Rich found himself 20kg overweight and breathless and doubled over in pain by a simple flight of stairs - his level of fitness a long way from his competitive swimming days. What happens next is straight out of a Rocky montage. He went vegan, got back in the pool and started running regularly. In less than two years, Rich was accepted into the invite-only endurance epic “Ultraman”. A double-distance Hawaiian Ironman, 515km of running, swimming and cycling completed over three days where he not only finished in the top 10, but recorded the 2nd fastest swim split of the contest. It was the first, but not the last time he’d compete in Ultraman, and his success there lead him to be named one of the 25 fittest men on the planet. At 51, he was names “the fittest vegan alive” right after competing in the extraordinary Swedish Swimrun race ötillö. 75 km swimming between then running across a total of 26 islands, tethered to your team mate - all in the brisk September waters of the Stockholm archipelago.Physical feats aside - Rich is a beacon of inspiration on so many levels. For me, his sobriety journey is one I use as a catalyst to push myself to be better, to do better, to get better every day at the business of being in recovery. His family is remarkable, he’s married, he and Julie raise four kids together and all that comes with blending families is something they navigate with grace and poise. He’s an incredible innovator. Behind the scenes he’s literally reinventing what it means to be a broadcaster in this modern world. He’s brave - when he changed careers, he deliberately chose to not pursue his law career - even though it offered a lifeline of funds when times were tight, because that would have taken him too far off the path he was forging for himself. He’s curious, his podcast is game-changing.He’s a bloody great human.Stay up to date on more upcoming NTNNNNN shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else? Ep 806483: The Surprising Positives of Seeking Solitude with Kerri Sackville

What if I told you, that there was a simple way to improve your creativity, self-awareness, focus, concentration, and reduce your stress and anxiety? It’s free. It’s not exercise. It’s not sleep.Any ideas?Turns out - a way to achieve all of those things is solitude. Not sitting in a room alone on your phone, or watching telly - no.That’s not it.Solitude.Just being with your thoughts.Yet Solitude is an interesting thing isn’t it?Too much of it is a bit hard to come back from. Not enough of it - and life can become quite difficult. But what about making time to find it, deliberately? Is it even a good idea?Turns out - it is.A very good idea. And Kerri Sackville has done her homework, written a book about it and is here to chat about it.Particularly about what happens to us when we seek out too little, and too much of it.As someone who’s done both - I found this conversation fascinating, and I changed my daily habits because of it.Kerri Sackville is an Australian writer who is a regular columnist for Sunday Life magazine, Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age.Over the years, Kerri has appeared frequently on commercial and ABC radio networks, podcasts, and TV shows including Sunrise, The Morning Show and The Daily Edition. She’s written five books, including her latest “The secret life of you” which is about spending time alone. If you can’t recall the last time that happened, this conversation might be what you need to help you carve out some time to make it happen.Kerri is a hoot.Enjoy this , I certainly did.Stay up to date on more upcoming NTNNNNN shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else?
