Ep 161Launch and learn - Creative Xanthe Berkeley

After walking away from a diverse career to have a family and live abroad, art graduate Xanthe was reluctant to return. Her children had started school and she was ready to work again, but office life was no longer appealing. She had this passion for taking pictures of her children and documenting her life, and after discovering Flickr and connecting with like-minded people online, she was hooked. Xanthe built a reputation for herself as a freelance wedding and family photographer, and then developed her business to include brand partnerships, film making, and online film courses. Like many of us, Xanthe’s got to where she is now without much of a plan. But it’s through diving in and giving things a try that she’s been able to explore so many of her creative interests. Because if you never try, you’ll never know, right? This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. Ep 160Know your personal value - Web Designer Dave Smyth

Dave’s always been freelance. First as a musician while he was studying, and more recently as a web designer working mostly with independent business owners. After starting out designing websites for musician friends, he built a solid reputation for himself on Upwork, gaining clients in the UK and overseas. When he began networking with other freelancers online, Dave soon saw the value in community. He’s now an active member of several groups and has recently launched a new project especially for freelancers. Work Notes is a resource full of advice that helps freelancers tackle the more practical aspects of running a business. It’s Dave’s way of giving back to the freelance community. Ep 159Sharing the hats - UX Designer Mariana Morris

After leaving agency life behind to go freelance, UX designer Mariana found herself yearning for more. Despite still working from home, she now runs her own small agency, Fruto. Missing the benefits of working closely with other people, Mariana wanted to create the perfect environment for great work. A team where the responsibilities are shared, the skills are complementary, and the opportunities to collaborate make for better creative decisions. And while many creative freelancers shy away from the business, sales, and financial aspects of our work, Mariana tells Steve that she’s actually learned to embrace those tasks. Ep 158Better, not bigger - Writer Paul Jarvis

After falling into freelance life accidentally in the late nineties, Paul Jarvis has helped to shape the way many freelancers work. He started out designing websites for professional athletes, working from his parent’s basement on a self-built computer. And now, 20 years later, Paul is a writer and published author who helps entrepreneurs build businesses that are better, not bigger. Through his weekly email series, the Sunday Dispatches, multiple podcasts and online courses, and now his book, Company of One: Why Staying Small is the Next Big Thing for Business, Paul teaches freelancers to make up their own rules when it comes to how they want their businesses to look. In this episode though it’s finally time to hear his story. How did his business look? How did he get to where he is today: happy to be a company of one? This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. Ep 156Location Independent - Copywriter Kelly Dunning

Digital nomad Kelly landed her first freelance writing gig while she was on a working holiday in New Zealand. Broke and struggling to find work locally, Kelly was introduced to the online world of content mills and freelance market places. After falling in love with a zombie-clad Brit she’d met in a haunted prison (true story!), Canadian-born Kelly found herself living and working in the UK. She spent her days looking after three-year-olds and her evenings and weekends climbing the freelance ladder. Eventually, after more than a year of building up her portfolio and establishing a name for herself, Kelly took her freelance business full-time and hit the road again. That was in 2011, and Kelly’s been travelling the world while she freelances ever since. We chat about how she balances work with travel, how she feels about the security of freelance life, and why she chose to de-monetise her travel blog. Ep 155Remember why you started - Illustrator Martha Williams

After studying Graphic Arts at uni and leaning towards the more experimental forms of art, Martha found herself working in an in-house graphic design role that left little room for creativity. Now two years into her freelance career and living between England and Spain, Martha has built herself a flexible business where she has plenty of variety in her work. And, more than that, Martha is now able to give herself time to work on her craft, scheduling in 5-day “holidays” where she’s free from client work and can focus entirely on her side projects. “The idea was to become freelance so I could enjoy my life more and work on these areas that I wanted to work on,” Martha says. Find out how she’s made that a possibility in this episode of Being Freelance. This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. Ep 15435 side projects and counting - Documentary Producer Jay Acunzo

35 side-hustles into a freelance career, with a book, a podcast, and a growing reputation as a keynote speaker, Jay has many strings to his bow. Watch him give a speech or hear him talk and you’d be forgiven for assuming he has it all figured out. Jay oozes confidence, but he’ll be the first to tell you that he’s making it all up as he goes along. Only this summer, in fact, Jay thought about leaving it all behind and getting a job. To his credit, he was able to overcome that threatening bout of self-doubt just as quickly as it appeared. But it just goes to show - even the boldest among us can struggle with being freelance. Ep 153Change the way you think - Designer Caitlin McEvoy

Despite working full-time and freelancing on the side, Caitlin’s made a big impact. From being a finalist in IPSE’s Freelancer of the Year Awards in 2015, to designing her own range of clothing to combat the stigma around mental health issues, Caitlin’s side hustle is impressive. Caitlin’s a self-taught designer who tasted her first slice of the freelance pie aged just 16. We talk about finding clients, building a portfolio, using freelance projects to save for a rainy day, and how Caitlin manages freelancing alongside a full-time job. Caitlin also opens up about her own struggles with mental health and the lessons she’s learned along the way. She’s an advocate for changing public perceptions and encouraging sufferers to carry on and go after the things they want. And she’s doing it the best way she knows how - through design. Ep 152Is freelancing child's play? - Kids' App Designer Chris O'Shea

Chris O’Shea first started freelancing straight out of college. After teaching himself web development with a library book, Chris had a phone line installed in his childhood bedroom in the family home. From there, 18-year-old Chris ran his own web design company in what was his first stab at self-employment. Sadly, (or luckily, depending on how you look at it) that one didn’t work out, and so Chris went back to uni to study a Digital Art degree. Moving to London in 2005, Chris soon found himself leading the way in the world of interactive installations. Travelling the world, running events and managing a successful blog - all alongside doing the work in his freelance business - Chris became an authority in his field. From building a name for himself to building a family; Chris is now a stay-at-home dad of two. Shifting to a career that allows him to work on projects he loves while still being around for his kids. We talk about what he learnt from that early experience of freelance life, how he applied those lessons to the impressive career he built for himself in London, and how he’s now found himself scaling back a little to juggle family life with running his third business, ‘Cowly Owl’. Chris isn’t just designing games. He’s designing a work life that fits his family. Ep 151“I’ve reached my goal, what’s next?” - Web Developer Jason Resnick

Web developer Jason Resnick had a big life goal. When he started a family, he wanted to be home to see his kid’s first steps and hear their first words. To him (and to most of us, I’d imagine) that’s what’s important. Jason wanted to be able to shape everything else around that. Rewind a few years to the late nineties and you’d find him ditching economics class to take casual HTML lessons from a friend via email. That’s where Jason fell in love with web development, and he soon began building a part-time freelance business around a full-time job. When the time came to leave his job and take the business full-time, Jason had the skill-set to do the work, but none of the business and sales knowledge needed to bring it in. We talk about how he’s developed that knowledge and built a sustainable freelance business that’s full of efficient processes. And how he now, having reached his life goal of building that flexible career, is determined to help other freelancers do the same. Ep 150Get a mentor, Be a mentor - Art Director Kirsten Murray

How is it episode 150?! But it is. Thanks so much for listening and sharing! Kirsten set herself a goal. To create a better work/travel balance. To see more of the world without giving up her job. And that's where we find her, on the road - more than happy to NOT set a new goal, but instead enjoy living this one. We chat about collaboration, remote working, making opportunities, digital nomad life (not that she'd call it that!), side projects, multi-skilled job titles and mentorship. Kirsten's both a mentor and a mentee and thinks no matter where we are in our freelance careers there are always people just a few steps ahead that we can learn from. And others who can learn from us. Kirsten believes if we have a chance to be a mentor, we should take it. Ep 149Keeping business afloat - Cartoonist Sarah Steenland

Sarah and her husband always wanted to retire and go cruising around the seas and oceans. They'd work hard in the construction industry, save their money and one day set sail. Then when the financial crisis hit 10 years ago things changed. Forced to sell everything and start living on a boat they realised maybe they didn't have to wait until they were older. Maybe they could do this now! There are plenty of digital nomads. But few have a family of four to support. Even less live on a boat - taking the term 'remote' working to a whole new level. When you're not just worried about whether an invoice has been paid, but what that burning smell on board is miles from the coast of Borneo. It's a great story. Interesting to find that even a freelancer so physically isolated is still relying on personal human connections to keep their business afloat. Leaving a successful high-level radio job behind, Vicki went freelance when she became a mum. But you won’t hear say “Hi, I’m a freelance photographer”. Instead it’s, “I run a photography business”. From the outset Vicki’s always put business before art. When burn out threatened she hired other photographers to work with her. She’s diversified into teaching both online and in person. She organises workshops and retreats. We chat about pricing, collaboration, podcasting and putting an hour aside at the start of each day to work on marketing or her side projects - to eat that frog. Ep 146Freelancing with a full time job - Digital Marketing Strategist Nathan Allotey

For years Nathan’s been freelancing on the side of his full time jobs. It’s given him an extra income but also a reason to learn extra skills that have then got him better full time positions. Nathan’s constantly learning - self taught, via groups, a Masters to a mastermind - digesting, discussing and sharing it with others in the freelancer community. He’s even realising what it is the companies he works (full time) for look for in high-value freelancers. This feels like a lot more than a ‘side hustle’. This goes right to his core. This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. Ep 14525% Marketing - Copywriter Kate Toon

There’s so much in this conversation. What will you take from it? It could be how Kate built up her SEO reputation to rank number one as a copywriter in Australia. Always spending 25% of her time marketing herself. It eventually paid off. It could be the transition from trading her time for money, to a more scalable ‘passive’ model. Switching 10 clients a month for 300 - maybe it’s not quite so passive. It could be building a team of other freelancers to help her do what she does best. Or dumping the guilt of the work-life balance myth and just giving herself a break. Or perhaps the podcasting, the community building, the starting a conference… And all without having a plan?! This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. Ep 141Ridiculously Useful - Email Strategist Val Geisler

What happens when we keep an open mind to the path we might take? When we listen to the needs of others? When we experiment - see what works? When we hire others? When we put our own lifestyle first? When we just try and be ridiculously useful? For Val Geisler the answers to these questions took her on a path from store managing to being an expert in a niche (with a diversion via motherhood on the way). Testing the need. Building community. Taking care of yourself. Listening for the whisper of the other paths. This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. He's built himself a career in copywriting from the ground up. Despite a busy work-life schedule Penny seems really balanced. Maybe that's embracing work into your life. Ep 128Instagram Success Story - Photographer Ron Timehin

Ron Timehin thought he would work in the music industry, but he went a completely different route. Playing music since he was 7, reaching the highest musical grade on the trumpet at 16, travelling and playing in ensembles around the world, it seemed like a natural next step. However, the reaction to his pictures he had been taking and posting on Instagram gave him the confidence to pursue photography professionally. Ron worked his day job, while freelancing on the side. Building up his skills, growing his audience. When a big sports brand comes knocking you know you're doing something right. Afer grinding at it after work every evening and weekend he finally quit his job and went all-in - it’s been great ever since, with work for a number of huge companies! His work-life balance is much better now. While he still has very busy days, not having an additional full-time job on top of his craft frees up time for him. He can now take days off and arrange his schedule as he'd like it, with space now to work on personal projects. It was brilliant hearing about tapping into Instagram to get clients, collaborating with the likes of Adobe, putting himself out there and seizing opportunities has really paid off. Key takeaways: Social media can be a great way to find clients and community Diversify your revenue streams, and Save your money Love learning from other freelancers like this? Ep 126Plans change and that's okay - Artist Roxanne Coble

Roxanne is a planner. She plans what she's doing with her business 'by bun' two years ahead. TWO YEARS. And yet she'd never planned to be an artist. She spent six years in a proper zero-creativity job before realising she could make a living through her art. And she's done that by growing an audience who enjoy her content across various social media platforms. Who support her, both socially and financially. But she realises plans can change, things change. And that's okay. We chat about taking on and even creating social challenges, the pressures of constant content creation, making courses, hosting workshops and figuring out a way to balance her work-life as freelancer. Ep 125The Passive Income Wake Up Call - Copywriter Kayla Hollatz

Not long out of college, Kayla quit her PR job to become self-employed. She was seduced by the 'one to many' infopreneurs - making money online from being an expert, selling courses etc. The dream of passive income soon became a nightmare of over-work in order to keep her sales funnel topped up. After a year of crazy 80-90 hour weeks she switched from products to services and became a freelance copywriter. But that doesn't mean she didn't learn anything from that first year and be able to put it to good use for both herself and her clients. We also chat finances, processes and using a CRM to keep on track with both. Love learning from other freelancers like this? Ep 124Make yourself unavoidable - Ben the Illustrator

Ben’s always been self-employed. Right after graduating college, he hustled as a freelance illustrator and animator for two years, and grouped together with a team to run an animation studio for a few years after that. Although the studio work was successful, he had enough of “wearing multiple hats” there. He'd been doing illustration work on the side and really enjoyed it. He decided to “break up the band” in 2005 and became… Ben the Illustrator! He still has the daily concerns that you get with running any business, but he can now wear his favourite hat most of the time: that of a creative freelancer. He’s got the work-life balance down pat. He wakes up early to get a couple hours in, with a few more during the day and sometimes a bit more in the evening. The rest of the time he can be there for his family; he drops off and picks up his son from school every day, and has quality time with him every afternoon. It was brilliant hearing stories from him about working remotely for clients around the world, side projects as leads for potential clients, and the renegade nature of freelancing. Key takeaways: Showcasing your originality and ideas can be really helpful in generating leads Promote what you do where the right people will find it, and Consider working for other people in your field before charting your own path Love learning from other freelancers like this? Ep 123Making Connections - Graphic Designer Amber Asay

Working for agencies and studios as a graphic designer since 2012, Amber Asay hated that she couldn’t interact directly with her clients. She also couldn’t show off her work in a personal portfolio, since her creations were the intellectual property of her employers. Even if she could have, she didn’t take much pride in the type of corporate branding work she had been doing. Now she’s connected to her clients and her peers, slogging away at it, but riding a high as she charts her own path. She still doesn’t quite have a grasp of the work-life balance. Her work often is her life, but she has a plan... Great thoughts on working a full-time job while growing her freelancing practice, connecting, putting your work out there and more. Ep 122Create Your Own Rules - Brand Strategist Jenni Heffernan Brown

Jenni Heffernan Brown has had a pretty interesting path to freelancing success. Working for mega corporations, then to graduate school with a bit of freelancing on the side, and now teaming up with another freelancer to form an agency. She’s never been one to thrive under strict rules set by others. A Straight-A student in high school, she was always in trouble for skiving, because she’d rather get the work done well and do other things on her own time, just like a freelancer! Now the co-founder of a marketing agency, she’s thriving on coming up with her own systems and processes and rules that work for her and her business partner. It took her years to get a sense of a work-life balance. Often having the urge to stay up until 2 am to work, she’s finally found herself more at ease letting go. She’s learned to step back and trust others to take on work, whether it’s her co-founder or other contractors. She even managed to spend a three-week vacation in Africa without access to WiFi, and didn’t tear her hair out worrying about work! It was brilliant chatting with her about getting to the success she’s enjoying now, how to attract the best kinds of clients, and learning how to carve out time for personal projects. Jenni is awesome and down-to-earth. Hope you have a great time listening to her! Key takeaways: You don’t have to follow other people’s rules, but you need structure for success Make sure you give yourself time to pursue your own interests, and Think about how you can present your talents in a way to best attract potential clients Love learning from other freelancers like this? Ep 121Bringing Side Projects to the Centre - Developer Mark Steadman

Mark Steadman has had a self-described checkerboard career. Freelancing on and off for years in between spells in companies, agencies and even running startups. He's always had side projects. And whether or not they're a 'success', the experience still feeds back into his freelance skills. But now he's bringing his podcasting project in from the side to be centre stage, giving it more 'full time' attention to make it the focus of his business. He can find himself intensely pulled into his work. Often staying up late, diving into podcast production or designing an app, only to take a break and realise that he’s neglected a number of household errands. He’s getting better at the work-life balance though, and does take more time for “human” needs - you know, things like eating and seeing family. We had great fun talking about time management, the sometimes blurred lines between work and hobbies, and whether or not he really did appear on a TV show in the '90s. Key takeaways: • Don't be impatient • Finding balance can be a challenge, and • Make sure you’ve got the financial stability before you give freelancing a go Love learning from other freelancers like this? Ep 112Secrets of Sharing - Social Media Consultant Uli Schulz

For German freelancer Uli, it all started with sharing. Using Twitter to share and make reality her dream of living and working in London. Since then she's been sharing work spaces, sharing in communities, sharing thoughts, groups, content, challenges, knowledge and now she shares it with us. From leaving agency life to nurturing (or naturing) an entrepreneurial adventure with her company Secrets of Green. Maybe the real secret is in the sharing.
