Ep 210Be a good craftsman - Audio Producer Matthew Walker
Matthew left uni in 2009, right after the financial crash. Ready to find a way to combine his love for music and games, he started freelancing immediately, picking up small projects and commissions, getting involved with whatever he could outside of his full-time job. But it wasn’t until 2016, after he was made redundant, that Matthew went freelance full-time. He had plenty of good contacts and some work in the pipeline, and things snowballed from there. As his clients grew so did he, and he began picking up referrals the more he got his name out there. He doesn’t have plans to grow his business to be any bigger than him. He simply wants to be a good craftsman, he says, and he’s very happy that he’s able to provide for his family while doing work he loves. Ep 209Don’t let frustration stop you - Illustrator James White (Signalnoise)
James started freelancing in 2010 after spending a couple of years building a name for himself online. He was still working for an agency during that first couple of years. He’d spend his days working on whatever landed on his desk, and his evenings creating exciting things for clients like MTV. Eventually, the balance tipped and James went freelance full time.By working on his own projects and putting that work out there, James was attracting clients who wanted to pay him for the things he loved doing. And it’s gone that way ever since.“When I was younger, I had an immense frustration with not having my own style,” James says. “That frustration was necessary. If you’re complacent, you’re not evolving. The more you do, the better you get. Don’t let that frustration stop you.” This episode of Being Freelance is supported by Coconut.Coconut is the ultimate accounting and tax tool for self-employed people. Ep 196Take each day as it comes - Illustrator Stanley Chow
Stanley’s first break came when he was doodling on a bit of paper in the fish and chip shop he worked in. The customer he was serving was an art buyer, and he set Stanley up with an interview that landed him an agent. Later, back in the days of MySpace, when Stanley first began building a profile online, he got a 3am phone call from The White Stripes’ management team. They’d seen his illustrations online and they wanted to commission him. Fast-forward to today and Stanley has his own studio as well as a booming print shop, and he’s worked with every dream client he had on his list. “You spend so many years slaving away, not really knowing what direction you’re gonna head in,” says Stanley, “and then 10, 11 years down the line, you realise things have actually worked out really well.” This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. Working in a job he didn’t like with a bully for a manager, Leif was desperate for a way out. But, nearing 30 and expecting his first child, he didn’t have many options. It’s 11 years later now, and Leif’s made a career out of copywriting. The late nights and weekend-working might be (mostly) a thing of the past, but work still comes with its struggles. As well as being freelance, Leif’s the director of ProCopywriters, a small professional association with over 850 members. He chats to Steve about the story behind his successful side project, including how it runs without a single employee and takes up far too much of his time. With an “umbrella of skills” and a professional title that doesn’t tie him to one specific job, Stefano’s able to build deeper, longer-term relationships with clients. He chats to Steve about he got started, how he finds clients, and how he’s worked on his mindset and well-being throughout his freelance career. After moving from her small island town to the big city of Brisbane, Australia, Emily set her sights on a job as a copywriter. Emily partnered with him on some projects, building her freelance business from there. She chats to Steve about how she got to where she is now, the ups and downs she’s dealt with along the way, and what freelance life is like for her now that she’s moved to the US to be with her husband. Storm now has an agent and a substantial portfolio, and he’s working on jobs that give him lots of room for creativity. And how does he keep the work coming in? “If you can be cool to hang out with for 10 hours,” Storm says, “the 10% of talent is a plus." Ep 173Pay what you can - Podcast Producer Steph Colbourn
Finding the right price for your services can be a tough one to crack. We’ve heard about all sorts of pricing models on the podcast before, but Steph’s the first to tell us she charges on a sliding scale. Steph tells her clients: "This is the least amount of money that I can make this project on, and this is the most amount of money that I would charge to do this project. Whatever you can afford to pay me in between those two, please do." Interesting, right? Steph tells us how that works in practice, as well as sharing her experiences of speaking at a conference, networking, finding clients, hiring a team, managing people, and keeping on top of the whole work-life balance thing. Before long, she’d developed an eye-catching and memorable brand - The INKtrovert, and was winning gigs on the back of putting her work out there online. Ep 165Always learning - Learning Experience Designer Cath Ellis
When she found herself knocking back freelance opportunities every week, Cath left her full-time job behind to start a business. Her only regret? Not having done it sooner. Cath’s been lucky in that she’s not had to search for work. Through SEO, website strategy, and word of mouth, she’s moved from one job to the next and worked with an array of international clients. And one of the biggest benefits of having no boss, Cath says, is the freedom to learn and develop in your own way. “I’d rather be an innovator than be following everyone else. I’m busier than ever but I’m learning more than ever.” This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. With an award-winning UK based support team on hand to help out, it’s easy to stay on top of your expenses, invoices, banking and tax. Ep 164Build decent and expansive relationships - Strategy Consultant Jan Mikulin
It could be argued that Jan’s doing things differently. He’s not on social media, he’s had long stretches of time out of work, he’s committed to maintaining his work-life balance, and he invests a lot of time into personal development. It all started with an unpaid work placement when he was almost bankrupt. Now, Jan’s built the kind of flexible freelance business that allows him to live life on his own terms. And he’s done that, he says, by getting organised and building deeper, more meaningful relationships. This is his story so far. Ep 163The pathway to such a cool life - Data Visualisation Expert Stephanie Evergreen
When Stephanie's employers were refusing projects she'd have loved to take on, she set up her own business on the side and began teaching people about the importance of the work she was doing. Seeing how popular the idea was, Stephanie's employers soon asked her to shut down her business and bring the work in-house. Stephanie said no. She's since had a book published on the subject, ran workshops for the United Nations, given international keynote speeches, built a virtual team of 6, and launched her own online academy that serves hundreds of students each year. Imagine if she hadn't said no all those years ago...If she hadn’t believed in herself and recognised the benefits of being freelance… This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze. Ep 162Setting goals and setting up an agency
After leaving agency life behind in search of autonomy, Alex built up his freelance web design career around a full-time working from home gig. His goal was to run his own agency, but he was stuck working on client-led projects that he didn't really believe in. Alex knew he could do a better job for his clients if only they'd let him take the driving seat. He re-positioned himself as a marketing consultant and began to take on projects where he'd play a leading role. Business grew, and soon Alex was ready to hire his first member of staff. His agency, The Lead Engine, is now 6-people strong, and Alex is working hard to get to a point where marketing and strategy can be his sole focus. (Well, that and being around more for his family. Fridays off, anyone?). This episode is supported by FreeAgent - online accounting software that makes managing your business finances a breeze.
