S6 Ep 7BAOS Top 10 | #7 | #127 It's A Good Time To Be A Beer Drinker with Alex Housenger & Sarah Diaz (Switchback)

E

You know what's better than one Vermont brewery in our Top 10 most downloaded podcasts of all time? Two Vermont breweries! Earlier this year, we spent a weekend in glorious VT and finally got to hang out with the team at Switchback. Tiff and Cee visited Switchback on their first ever Vermont trip in 2016, so this was a cool full circle moment. The brewery was huge, so much larger than we expected, and we got to get into their new East meets West IPA, our fave brew of the day. It was also cool to get the varied perspectives from Sarah, who runs the taproom, and Alex who runs the brewhouse, and to get some background as to how the VT craft beer scene has changed over the years. Get some Vermont beer in ya! ------------------------- Switchback are Vermont OGs, and they were one of the first taprooms in the state that Cee and Tiffany visited back in 2016. We finally got down there to chat with the team for an interview - we hung out with Brewer Alex and Taproom Manager Sarah to get into the history of the brewery, to discuss their Ale being the most exported beer in Vermont and yap about brewery dogs. Cheers! Beer Reviewed: Switchback Ale; Switchback IPA; Switchback Tequila Barrel Aged Thai Lime Gose; Switchback Gales Of Helles; Switchback Blackstrap Ale; Switchback Citra-Pils Keller Bier. S6 Ep 8BAOS Top 10 | #8 | #105 Smells Like A Dave with Dan Sartwell & Andrea Gagner (14th Star Brewery)

E

Vermont is a truly special place to the BAOS team, and back in September 2018 we partnered with the good folks at Tourism Vermont to hang out in the Green Mountain state and interview some breweries. One pleasant surprise was 14th Star, a military-themed brewery in St. Albans about 10 miles from the Canadian border. We had a fantastic chat with Head Brewer Dan - who has since departed, and I kept calling him Dave - and CEO Andrea for almost 3 hours, and when that happens, it means we really got along. It also helped that the beers were fantastic, they have a solid range of styles and do them all quite well, with some faves including their raspberry sour Vermonter Weiss, their NEIPA B-72 and their classic Maple Breakfast Stout. Enjoy this throwback! ------------------------- One of the closest towns to the Canadian border, St. Albans, VT certainly doesn't get the love it deserves in the craft beer world. 14th Star are the shining stars (see what we did there?) of the town, growing from humble beginnings as the brainchild of two military veterans to one of the most respected and consistent breweries in one of the most lauded states in beer. We hung out with CEO Andrea and Brewmaster Dan (not Dave) to chat about all things beer in Vermont. Cheers! Beers Reviewed: 14th Star Oktoberfest; 14th Star Raspberry Vermonter Weiss; 14th Star Follow Me IPA; 14th Star Red Wine Barrel Aged Vermonter Weiss; 14th Star Maple Breakfast Stout; 14th Star Valor Ale. S6 Ep 9BAOS Top 10 | #9 | #102 Call Brad For A Good Time with Brad Murray (Pit Caribou)

E

Number #9 in our Top 10 most downloaded podcasts of all time is our chat with Officer Brad (he's actually an officer, we thought he was joking but he showed us his badge after the podcast) of Pit Caribou. It was crazy that he flew all the way to Montreal from Gaspe just to chat with us, as they're one of the most respected breweries in the province. Even though the brewery how now changed hands, Brad remains part of the team and it was awesome to hear the history of the business while sipping on some of the finest beers in Quebec. Cheers! ------------------------- Pit Caribou are renowned as one of the finest breweries in Quebec, and hailing from the Gaspe coast 9+ hours drive from Montreal, if it wasn't for their Plateau brewpub we wouldn't get anywhere near enough of them in the big city. We hung out with Brad Murray, who has been with Pit from the very beginning, to drink some phenomenally refined beer and discuss the impact that Gaspesie has on the Quebec beer world. S6 Ep 10BAOS Top 10 | #10 | #90 Refined Simplicity with Luc "Bim" LaFontaine (Godspeed Brewery)

E

Change is good for everyone. The podcast has been running for around four and a half years now, and we feel like it's time we switch it up. We've now updated all our previous episodes into five seasons based on the year they were released, and all future episodes will be released with a thematic narrative element, beginning in 2020. Between now and Christmas 2019, we'll be reposting the Top 10 most downloaded episodes of all time, starting with Episode #90 with Luc from Toronto's Godspeed. Luc is a great guy, and his (mostly) traditional beers are exceptional. We hung out with him last summer at the brewery in Toronto to crush some fire and get into his eclectic beer history. Even if you've heard this one before, it's always fun to revisit a chat with such an intelligent guy. Cheers! ------------------------- It's crazy to us that we're at episode 90. Amazing. For this latest milestone, we hung out with the legendary Luc "Bim" LaFontaine at the almost-one-year-old Godspeed Brewery in Toronto. Godspeed were the most hyped Ontario brewery of 2017, and Luc's smooth, traditional beers have caused a stir across the province's beer scene. We chat about his humble beginnings with Dieu du Ciel, his brewery and tea farm in Japan and his plans for the future. S5 Ep 159#159 More Important Than Beer with Nathan Lefebvre (NathanDoesBeer / BAOS Podcast)

E

If you read our blog, you'll be familiar with our latest guest. Nathan of NathanDoesBeer first appeared on our Ottawa podcast (Episode #135), and since he was in Montreal to shoot our forthcoming "Where To Drink In Montreal" vlog, we figured we may as well get in a chat. We shoot the breeze about a bunch of stuff, including Nathan's recent writing work for BAOS, the facts and opinions on the OCB scandal from a week or so back, and we even premiere a brand new soon-to-be video segment, "Let's Argue" (likely going to be called "Unpopular Opinion, though). S5 Ep 158#158 One Thing In Common with Troy Burtch (Great Lakes Brewery)

E

For 32 years, Great Lakes have represented Toronto craft beer, so it was awesome to finally sit down with Marketing & Communications Manager Troy Burtch at their Etobicoke brewery. Their iconic Canadiana-style labels have imprinted themselves on the Ontario craft beer scene unlike almost any other brewery, and the styles they produce are far and wide ranging - from crispyboi pilsners to classic English-style pale ales, from hazy IPAs to barrel aged stouts, Great Lakes are always pushing the scene forward. We chatted with Troy about how the brewery came about and how the beer world has changed over the years. Cheers! S5 Ep 157#157 Fermenting Everything with Guillaume Vermette (MaBrasserie)

E

Every time we tell Montreal beer lovers, "No, we haven't been to MaBrasserie", we're met with a perplexed facial expression. So finally we got our act together and headed to Rosemont to meet with Guillaume, who heads sales for the coop brewery, but he also has an in-depth understanding of beer in that he's the Vice President of homebrew club LABAQ. We hung out in the brewery, sampled some fresh English-style golden ale from the brite tank, crushed some cans of MaBrasserie's finest and discussed the ins and outs of how a brewery coop works. S5 Ep 156#156 Back To Balance with Rudi Ghequire (Rodenbach)

If you've been following us over the years, you'll know that one great beer region we haven't dabbled in to date is Europe. But for this episode, Europe came to us. Founded in 1821, you can't get much more OG than Belgium's Rodenbach, and their Master Brewer Rudi Ghequire was in Quebec to celebrate the launch of three of their beers into our market. We were lucky enough to not only sit at his table at a Brew Master's Brunch in downtown Montreal, but we also were honoured to sit down with Rudi at Station Ho.st for a full length, in-depth podcast with one of the greatest beer minds in Europe. S5 Ep 155#155 The Business Of Marketing Craft Beer Pt. 3: Doing It Right with Tiffany Alexis (High Season Co.)

E

It's been four whole months since we've had Tiffany from High Season Co. on the podcast, so we figured we were overdue for a chat. This time around, it wasn't just all marketing talk. We ran through our summer beer activities, why we're not into beer festivals as much right now, some great examples of beer marketing, the #IAmCraftBeer hashtag, fall beer trends we're looking forward to, and even a Craft Beer Marketing Lightning Round. We also cracked open the September beer box from our mates at The Craft Reserve, featuring some dank IPAs, some funky sours and even a creamy porter, all from Hamilton, ON's Fairweather Brewing, pairing it with some bacon crack jerky from Nate's Great Jerky. S5 Ep 154#154 Psychedelic Tornado with Stephane Pilon & Matthieu Edange (Vilains Brasseurs)

E

Sometimes you see a brewery's products everywhere you go, and for some reason you just don't get around to giving them a crack. Well, that's part of the reason why we run this podcast, folks, as it gives us an excuse to check out literally every brewery. We finally connected with Stephane and Matthieu of Vilains at the launch of their brand new Parasol IIPA at Bar Pamplemousse in Montreal, we ran through their entire range of (mostly hoppy) beers, discussed the importance of branding, marketing and design in craft beer, and most of all, had a great time drinking their fantastic brews. S5 Ep 153#153 Vinyl Only with Chris Maestro (BierWax)

E

Every year in late August, Cee and Tiff make the pilgrimage to Brooklyn, New York to attend Afropunk, an eclectic music festival. While they'd been filming Where To Drink In Brooklyn vlogs, they had never actually done a full podcast with anyone in the city - until now. We learned about BierWax, a Hip Hop-themed craft beer and vinyl bar located a few blocks from downtown BK in Prospect Heights, via our good friends Crowns & Hops, so we were stoked to meet Co-Founder Chris Maestro at the bar, drink some fire NY beer and find out more about his cosy, welcoming, authentic cultural space in the heart of Brooklyn. S5 Ep 152#152 Baby Steps Towards Greatness with Matt McGachy (Vox & Hops / Cryptopsy)

E

For our long time listeners and viewers, you may recall that waaay back in the day we used to interview a lot of our talented friends in the music or entertainment business, but over the past few years we've focused almost exclusively on speaking with breweries. Well folks, we finally got an opportunity to combine beer and music once again, hanging out with fellow podcaster and lead singer of the legendary Montreal metal band Cryptopsy, Matt McGachy. We had a very lengthy and entertaining chat about all things beer podcasting, being an international touring musician, and a lot of other stuff that escapes me right now. It got a little fuzzy towards the end there. This was a fun one. Enjoy! S5 Ep 151#151 It's All About Balance

E

This is a first for us. While we've done podcasts with just the team in the past, we've never had a solo episode - until now. Cee has been going a little too hard lately with travel and beer, so as he's been under the weather there was no podcast for this week. He had an idea to use this opportunity to chat, basically talk to himself, about an issue we feel is plaguing the craft beer world - balance. This is a much needed conversation, and Cee covers why he drinks as much as he does, what he's doing to rectify that and what you could do on your end to get a little moderation in your life. We kept it short and sweet for this one. Enjoy! Beer Reviewed: Just a cup of tea. E

Cheers to one hundred and fifty episodes! While we were in Vermont on a brewery campaign to disconnect for 24 hours, we swung by Colchester to meet with Evan and Dave at Green Empire. We first heard of them during the Stowe Cider episode and have been keeping tabs since, so it was great to get to see where the magic happens. We hung out at their production facility, where later this month they'll be opening a retail space, to crush some of their fantastic hazy IPAs and chat about being the first - and only - brewery in Colchester. S5 Ep 149#149 Collective Consciousness with Matthew Reiner (Rorschach Brewing)

E

Toronto's East End is teeming with fire breweries, and one place we've been wanting to have on for a while is Rorschach. These guys have been heavily lauded for their eclectic beer menu, great location and dope brewpub vibes. We hung out with Head Brewer and Co-Founder Matt on Rorschach's fantastic patio to crush some of their "weird beers", half of which contained lactose, and chat about how the brewery came about, their unique naming conventions, sharing resources and sharing good beer. As the second largest brewery in the state, O'Connor have set the tone for Virginia's beer scene over the last decade, and Kevin is one of the most respected brewers around. S5 Ep 147#147 Virginia Is For Lovers with Jake Endres & Lee Rogan (Crooked Run)

E

Virginia is a region we've been wanting to visit for some time, so we were stoked to partner with Visit Virginia to get us down to the state for lovers to hit as many breweries as humanly possible. The first podcast saw us venture out to Sterling, around 45 minutes out of Alexandria (right across the river from Washington, D.C.), to meet with Co-Owners Jake and Lee of Crooked Run. These guys came extremely highly recommended as they knock out phenomenal beers across the style spectrum, clearly getting on our radar for their haze and lactose gems. We hung out with the fellas in their new restaurant + cocktail bar adjacent to the brewery to chat about the VA scene and their 6th anniversary party over the weekend just passed. S5 Ep 146#146 Go Small Or Go Home with Jean-François Legentil & Jean-Pierre Gauthier (Echo Session Ales)

E

If you've been following our recent episodes, you may have noticed a bit of a trend towards low ABV beers happening in QC. This session trend has gotten so real that the newest brewery in Quebec exclusively makes session beers. Echo Session Ales, ran by TV guys JF and JP, are making some serious noise in La Belle Province with their first two canned offerings, a Witbier with whole oranges and a hazy session IPA. We got hold of the guys down at Boswell in Montreal to crush some of their beers (including their awesome Boswell collab) and find out why session beers are making so much noise. Note: The bar got extremely crowded and noisy towards the end of the podcast, it's still very clear and audible, it just gets a little distorted as the mic levels weren't adjusted as the ambient noise increased. S5 Ep 145#145 Not Their First Rodeo with Mathieu Brouchu (Microbrasserie À la Fût)

E

Quebec is home to some legendary breweries, but not many have impacted the cultural zeitgeist more than À la Fût. Located in Saint-Tite, about 2 hours north east of Montreal just past Shawinigan, the town is most famous for their Western Festival held every September. We've been told it rivals Calgary's Stampede. The town and brewery itself make you feel like you're back in old Western times, with the bar resembling a saloon, horses adorning every street pole and friendly locals unironically wearing cowboy hats. We hung out with brewer Mathieu to crush some of their incredibly complex brews and spent the night at the auberge across the street. Very handy. We swung by to meet the owners and Head Brewer Patrick back in March, so it was dope to finally get some time to sit down with Pat on the newly opened patio to crush some of their latest releases. S5 Ep 143#143 An Episode For Chris: Celebrating The Life Of Christopher Needelman

E

This is the episode we never wanted to do. On June 5th, we arrived at Montreal's Saint Houblon to interview Chris Needelman, Head Brewer, at their Little Italy location. We were told by the server that Chris had tragically passed away the week before in a car accident. Although we'd never met Chris and had only corresponded via email, the news hit us hard. It didn't feel right to just replace his episode with something else, so we were blessed to have the opportunity to talk to Chris' father, mother, girlfriend and mother of his two children, cousin, and friends at L'Espace Public, drink his final collaboration beer with owner Simon Livingstone, and hear stories about a charismatic, kind, warm, passionate man whose life was cut much, much too short. S5 Ep 137#137 Oak & Horses with Sean McVeigh (Small Pony Barrel Works)

E

Barrel-aged beer is always looked upon with reverence, both in the difficulty of nailing it and the fact that time is the main factor. Sean started Small Pony a few years ago and he exclusively brews barrel-aged sour beers - no rent beers, just the one fermentor, and time is the main limitation. Perhaps this is why his beers are so special - each are painstakingly and expertly crafted to create some of the finest sour beers in the country. We hung out with Sean and his barrels in our final podcast from the Ottawa trip to find out how all this happened. S5 Ep 136#136 Aggressively Hugging with Shane Clark & Rob McIsaac (Beyond The Pale)

E

A few years back when Ottawa beer was first hitting the map for us, Beyond The Pale were one of the breweries who grabbed our attention. Their tiny taproom in Hintonburg generated a ton of attention, which lead them to move to a humongous warehouse space to support their rapid growth. High school mates Shane and Rob, along with Shane's Dad, Al, built this thing from the ground up so we hung out, talked a bunch of nonsense and ran through a bunch of their fantastic brews, including some of the crispybois, haze, West Coast IPAs and collabs. S5 Ep 135#135 Beers In Parliament: Spotlight On Ottawa with Christophe Paquette (Hops & Bros) & Nathan Lefebvre (NathanDoesBeer)

E

The craft beer community is a beautiful thing, so it was a pleasure to finally bring on two of our closest friends in the beer world. Chris is a YouTuber, running the Gatineau-based Hops & Bros alongside his co-host Max (who's currently attending Niagara College brewing school), while Nathan is a blogger & Instagrammer, being our resident in-house writer here at BAOS. Nate was kind enough to host us at his apartment in Centretown, Ottawa to crush a range of beers from some of Ottawa's finest breweries, and chat about how the capital has become one of the most exciting beer scenes in the country. S5 Ep 134#134 A Real Brewmance with Justin MacNeill & Marc Plante (Stray Dog)

E

We're terrible. We haven't been to Ottawa for an extended period of time since the Canadian Brewing Awards back in 2017. Coincidentally, we connected with Justin, owner and brewer at soon-to-open brewery Stray Dog at the CBAs, and have been keeping in touch ever since. So when we finally had the opportunity to get out to the brewery, we jumped at it. We headed out to the nation's capital and hanging out with co-founders Justin and Marc was our first stop. We crushed a couple of their fire brews and yapped about how it all came together. Beers Reviewed: Stray Dog Jagged Little Pilsner; Stray Dog Shaggin' Wagon. S5 Ep 133#133 The Melody Of Beer with Fred Cormier (Hopfenstark)

E

After numerous failed attempts, we finally caught up with the legendary Fred Cormier of Hopfenstark at his taproom and bar, Station Ho.st, situated between The Village and Le Plateau neighbourhoods. Fred has been brewing for a long time, he came up with some of the most lauded brewers in Vermont like Shawn Hill, John Kimmich and Sean Lawson, and brews some exceptionally made beers out of his new expanded production facility. We ran through a ton of beers on a snowy Tuesday afternoon, and the chat was so fun we were almost hit 3 hours. Stick around, it's worth it. Enjoy! S5 Ep 132#132 Buying Is Voting with Olivier Marceau Landry (Experience Biére)

E

While it's amazing to get an inside perspective of the people behind the beer, one element of the beer life cycle that often gets overlooked is the people who get the beer to the drinkers. Experience Bière is a fantastic beer store, known as a depanneur in Quebec, based in Montreal, with one of the widest range of beers in the city. We hung out with co-owner Olivier to drink some of his favourite beers from the province and figure out why there isn't enough haze in Montreal. Labrosse opened up in Pointe-Claire over the past few years and have been delivering fire brews those who wouldn't normally have access - it's a community service, essentially.
