Fort Collins, Colorado is known as one of the finest beer cities in the entire US, and one of the OGs of the region is Odell. Our first stop in Colorado Springs was Trails End Taproom, a fantastic concept bar located near some major natural attractions. The idea behind the venue is it's the meeting place where hikers, bikers and skiers congregate at the end of a hard day to enjoy a cold beer and chat about the amazing things you saw and did. We were genuinely scared for our trip to Breckenridge. We were told the over 8,000 ft altitude was going to mess with us, but besides some huffing and puffing while we walked around, there were no issues. We hung out with Blake, Lead Brewer, at the original Breckenridge Brewpub, sipping some of his brewpub only beers with a mountainous backdrop that looked like CGI. Such a fun chat. We made a goal to hang out in the mountains this past summer, and our friends at Visit Colorado made it happen! Located atop a gorgeous mountain in central Vermont, Bent Hill Brewery have fast become one of the state's most interesting breweries. Owner and Head Brewer Mike Czok is a jack of all trades - he built the brewery, he brews the beers, he feeds the dogs, and his products are some of the most eclectic we've ever tried. From pickle sours to lavender beers, from hazy IIPAs to beet beers, you've never tasted anything like this before. We hung out on Mike's amazing patio with hummingbirds, sunflowers and canine for a chat and a few beers. One of the closest towns to the Canadian border, St. Albans, VT certainly doesn't get the love it deserves in the craft beer world. 14th Star are the shining stars (see what we did there?) of the town, growing from humble beginnings as the brainchild of two military veterans to one of the most respected and consistent breweries in one of the most lauded states in beer. Toronto's East End is one of the most brewery-heavy neighbourhoods in the city, and around a year ago Eastbound opened their doors to TO's thirsty drinkers. Co-Founder and Head Brewer Dave Lee, along with his wife and Head Chef Tara (who made a podcast cameo!) and partners, have created a lot in a small space, focusing as heavily on their menu as they have on their beer. Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie is a Montreal neighbourhood that isn't widely renowned for craft beer, but La Succursale are the OGs of the area. Opening in 2011, Jean-Phillippe created a welcoming brewpub in a neighbourhood that truly needed an injection of great beer, and everything they're doing is fantastic. While JP wasn't exactly into some of our Lightning Round questions, this was an entertaining conversation. When you think of Montreal brewpubs, Le Réservoir is one of the OGs, and one of the only in the ultra hip Le Plateau neighbourhood. In 2016, serial restauranteur Dominic Goyet and his wife Ariane took over Le Réservoir, then a neighbourhood staple, and have slowly built it into a super interesting, forward-thinking brewpub and restaurant. Dominic is so cool we ended up hanging out for over 5 hours in the sun. Cee got really burned up but it was worth it. Did you know that contract brewing is the norm in Rio de Janeiro? The team at OverHop, hailing from Rio, have done something extremely impressive in the world of Canadian craft beer. Not only are all their brews unique, interesting and super tasty, but they've managed to out maneuver both the overly complex Ontario and Quebec laws by contracting separately out of each province to have their products sold in both markets. Kahnawake Brewing Co. have literally and figuratively broken new ground with their recently opened brewpub. They're the first ever brewery located on a Native reserve in Canada, and to make that happen, Co-Founder and Head Brewer Drew Stevens had to work closely with his partners, the Native council and the government to create new laws around beer to make it happen. It's generally accepted that a brewery needs some time to come into their own, get familiar with their equipment, their brand, their fans and really dial everything in. We completely went against that by chatting with Co-Owner Michael and Head Brewer Braden of Montreal's newest brewery, Microbrasserie 4 Origines, who had only been open 10 days as of the podcast. Why did we chat with them so soon? The fact that they had 1200 people respond to the Facebook event for their launch party and there was a 40 minute wait to get in most of the day was enough for us.
