S4 Ep 113#113 Live from Beau's Oktoberfest 2018
EBeau's Oktoberfest is one of our favourite weekends of the year, and not only did we get to hang out and drink some fire beers - we did our first ever live podcast! Cee and Scott hosted a panel of four amazing Ontario brewers - Matthew O'Hara (Beau's), Michael Hancock (Side Launch), Christian Riemerschmid von der Heide (Tagwerk) and Bryce McBain (Halcyon Barrel House) - and ran through a series of serious and not-so-serious Lightning Round questions. S4 Ep 112#112 A Beer For Every Moment with Zach Wilson (Purpose Brewing & Cellars)
EOur second stop in Fort Collins, Colorado was with Zach at Purpose Brewing. They barrel age all their beers, and pretty much none of them are ever made more than once - they look at beer as art, as it rightfully should be. Co-Founded by Zach and Peter Bouckaert of New Belgium fame, Purpose are making a name for themselves in one of the finest beer markets in the country. Thanks again to Visit Colorado! Their facility is yuuuuge, and in their 23 years in the game they've really brought craft beer to the masses via their balanced, well-made English-style beers. EOur first stop in Colorado Springs was Trails End Taproom, a fantastic concept bar located near some major natural attractions. The idea behind the venue is it's the meeting place where hikers, bikers and skiers congregate at the end of a hard day to enjoy a cold beer and chat about the amazing things you saw and did. The best part? There's 40 taps on the wall and you pour your own beer! So much fun, we need these in Toronto and Montreal. Thanks again to Visit Colorado! S4 Ep 109#109 Brewery With An Altitude with Blake Schwalls (Breckenridge Brewpub)
EWe were genuinely scared for our trip to Breckenridge. We were told the over 8,000 ft altitude was going to mess with us, but besides some huffing and puffing while we walked around, there were no issues. We hung out with Blake, Lead Brewer, at the original Breckenridge Brewpub, sipping some of his brewpub only beers with a mountainous backdrop that looked like CGI. Such a fun chat. Hours after touching down in Durango in the south western part of the state, we headed up to Colorado OGs Ska Brewing for a fantastic podcast with International Sales Manager Arlo and Brewer Joe to get aligned with the CO beer scene, all the while dealing with the significant elevation change. He's still with HELM but he's also the Head Brewer at one of the newest and most innovative projects in Montreal's beer scene, Le Dispensaire de Bière. S4 Ep 97#97 Crowlers: A Metaphor For Life with Dave Lee (Eastbound)
EToronto's East End is one of the most brewery-heavy neighbourhoods in the city, and around a year ago Eastbound opened their doors to TO's thirsty drinkers. Co-Founder and Head Brewer Dave Lee, along with his wife and Head Chef Tara (who made a podcast cameo!) and partners, have created a lot in a small space, focusing as heavily on their menu as they have on their beer. EWhile Cee and Producer Tiffany were in Niagara-On-The-Lake celebrating her 30th birthday, it was only right that they swung by the OGs of NOTL, Silversmith. We hung out with Co-Founder Chris and Head Brewer John to run through their rainbow of beers, and you'll hear that most of the interview was Chris coming up with episode title gold. S4 Ep 95#95 Lactocalypse with Noah Forrest (Beerism)
EThe last time we had Noah on the podcast was back on Episode #55, and the day we recorded this was a year to the day we recorded his first appearance - so we knew this was meant to be. We have a group chat with fellow beer writers, YouTubers and Instagrammers where we debate the virtues (and otherwise) of lactose in beer, so we figured we'd settle it once and for all with a lactosravaganza of epic proportions. Are you #TeamLactose or #TeamNoLactose? ERosemont–La Petite-Patrie is a Montreal neighbourhood that isn't widely renowned for craft beer, but La Succursale are the OGs of the area. Opening in 2011, Jean-Phillippe created a welcoming brewpub in a neighbourhood that truly needed an injection of great beer, and everything they're doing is fantastic. While JP wasn't exactly into some of our Lightning Round questions, this was an entertaining conversation. S4 Ep 93#93 Beer Is A Popular Drink with Dominic Goyet (Le Réservoir)
EWhen you think of Montreal brewpubs, Le Réservoir is one of the OGs, and one of the only in the ultra hip Le Plateau neighbourhood. In 2016, serial restauranteur Dominic Goyet and his wife Ariane took over Le Réservoir, then a neighbourhood staple, and have slowly built it into a super interesting, forward-thinking brewpub and restaurant. S4 Ep 91#91 One Love with Patricia Rios, Tatiana Fulton & Rodrigo Baruffaldi (OverHop)
EDid you know that contract brewing is the norm in Rio de Janeiro? The team at OverHop, hailing from Rio, have done something extremely impressive in the world of Canadian craft beer. Not only are all their brews unique, interesting and super tasty, but they've managed to out maneuver both the overly complex Ontario and Quebec laws by contracting separately out of each province to have their products sold in both markets. They have an amazing story and it was a pleasure to chat with them at the 2018 Mondial de la Bière festival. S4 Ep 89#89 Canadian Beer Independence with Steve Beauchesne (Beau's) and Frédérick Tremblay (Microbrasserie Charlevoix)
EFor this episode, we did something a little different. With the recent controversy over an Independence Seal online, as any good media should, we looked at both sides. We initially spoke with Mike and Keegan of Microbrasserie 4 Origines about the seal they launched, and so for this episode, we chatted in-depth with Fred, the former president of the Quebec beer body AMBQ and Co-Founder of Microbrasserie Charlevoix, and Steve, Co-Founder of Beau's All Natural, who has been instrumental in spearheading a national Canadian beer trade group. This was a fascinating conversation with two highly regarded members of the brewing industry, and we'd love to hear your thoughts on where this is all going. EThis was a super special podcast, as we had Montreal (and Quebec) craft beer media royalty in the building. We headed out to Verdun to hang with David Atman, a man involved in so many projects you'll need a two hour podcast to get up to speed, and of course Noah Forrest of Beerism came through to help co-host like the legend he is. S4 Ep 83#83 Pun Game Strong with Michael D'Ornellas & Braden Richards (Microbrasserie 4 Origines)
EIt's generally accepted that a brewery needs some time to come into their own, get familiar with their equipment, their brand, their fans and really dial everything in. We completely went against that by chatting with Co-Owner Michael and Head Brewer Braden of Montreal's newest brewery, Microbrasserie 4 Origines, who had only been open 10 days as of the podcast. Why did we chat with them so soon? The fact that they had 1200 people respond to the Facebook event for their launch party and there was a 40 minute wait to get in most of the day was enough for us. S4 Ep 79#79 Gary The Bear with Martin Brooks & Frédéric L'Ecuyer (Brasserie du Bois Blanc)
EAfter hearing about Brasserie du Bois Blanc from a bunch of Montreal beer mates, we just had to take the trip up to Hudson, QC to hang out with Co-Founders Martin and Frédéric at their cosy brewpub. The podcast got ridiculous pretty fast, but before the tomfoolery kicked off we had a solid chat about their humble beginnings, their fantastic beer and all things nerdy (which really confused Cee). We wish we had video from the shenanigans after we turned the mic off. EFor our second Melbourne podcast this trip, we headed into Collingwood, one of the most poppin' neighbourhoods in the city, to connect with Mirek Aldridge of The Mill Brewery. Cee and Mirek connected via Instagram over a mutual love of all things hazy, so they finally got to crush a few of The Mill's fantastic brews - including I Can't Believe It's Not Juice, their phenomenal NEIPA - and chat about the Aussie scene. S4 Ep 75#75 Drinking All The Way To The Bank with Chris Farmer (Mr. Banks)
EFebruary is the worst month of the long, long Canadian winter so Cee skipped town to head back home to Melbourne, Australia, and there was no way he'd jump on a plane for 20 hours and not get in a few podcasts. Cee linked up with Chris from Seaford's Mr. Banks, a forward-thinking brewery with a brand spanking new tap room, a fantastic lineup of beers and a bloody good NEIPA. What a legend. Legit, one of the partners at Hochelaga's L'Espace Public, Pierre Lessard-Blais, is the Mayor of the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Crazy. We hung out in the East End pub with Co-Owners Simon and Frank, crushed some cans and chatted about the local scene, and even received a surprise visit from Olivier from Matera Brasseurs. EFinally back on Canadian soil, we figured it was long overdue that we focus on our local scene(s) so Cee caught up with Co-Owners Guillaume and Derrick from Montreal's Pub BreWskey. Located in a cosy basement in the famous Old Port neighbourhood, we ran through a bunch of their in-house brews, chatted about the Quebec scene and got the scoop on why the "W" is capitalized in their name. S3 Ep 67#67 #BlackPeopleLoveBeer with Teo Hunter & Beny Ashburn (Dope & Dank) and Tiffany Alexis
EOur final LA podcast was a special one. We connected with the enigmatic Teo Hunter on Instagram back when Black People Love Beer first launched, and we'd stayed close supporters over the years as both of our movements grew. This LA trip finally allowed us to hang out and build in person with both Teo and his partner in Dope & Dank, Beny Ashburn. Since our producer Tiffany was there too, it was only right she joined in this vital conversation focused on diversity in craft beer. Beers Reviewed: Bellwoods Witchshark; Monkish Vocabulary Spills. This brewery has really made waves in the scene in recent years, so we were excited to sit down with Co-Founder Jonathan and Head Brewer Tim for a candid and hilarious convo.
