BaconBit: And the 2021 Oscar Winners Are…

Well, the 93rd Academy Awards happened, it seems. The ratings for this once-celebrated award show took a nosedive, and we think we know why. We’ll discuss the issues this last broadcast had, we’ll briefly talk about the winners of each category (and not have Best Picture as the last category, for some reason), and we’ll tell the Academy what they need to do to recover some of the dignity they once had (and perhaps gain some viewers). Plus, we’ll announce the winner of our Baconsale ballot contest, and reveal a monumental moment in Baconsale history. Sudden wolf howl! Press play!

Episode 300: Our 300th Episode!

Listener, a new age has begun, an age of 300 episodes of Baconsale! We were unable to do an anniversary show last year, which meant that Spencer retained his title of The Listener for an extra season, but now he’s going to have to defend his throne against two worthy contestants: Scott and Brandon. And you can play along as we quiz our guests on things like Kent’s movie ratings, Joel’s celebrity impressions, and Zack’s dramatic readings of TV theme songs. Press play to join us on our self-indulgent journey of podcasting and pop culture as we talk, laugh, and snack on individually wrapped treats.

Episode 299: 2021 Oscar Predictions

Who’s up for a downer? Whether you realized it or not, the 93rd Academy Awards are this Sunday, and Baconsale is making our predictions as to who is going to win each of the 23 categories in what might be the lowest-viewed ceremony of all time. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the films, most people haven’t, and we’ll describe them to you. Though, all the nominees seem to be angry or depressing this year, so we need Baby Yoda to help us through these difficult times. Will Mank make bank? Does Promising Young Woman show promise? Will Nomadland find a place to stay? Will the hearts of the Academy turn to The Father? Press play to find out! Plus, you could win an Amazon gift card by going to Baconsale.com or our social media pages and filling out our official 2021 Oscars ballot. We’re accepting submissions until April 25.

Episode 298: Chillin’ with Godzilla

What’s that loud roar in the distance? Oh no! It’s Godzilla! (Gojira?) On this episode of Baconsale, we’re talking about the King of Monsters, and we have two kaiju enthusiasts joining us in the Baconcave. Nicole & Kris are going to help guide us through the history of this primeval champion. And Kent, Joel & Zack each watched a handful of these movies in preparation, so they’re ready to discuss the other giant creatures that Godzilla has encountered throughout the years, highlights & lowlights, and the potential future of the franchise. Press play to join us on this educational and destructive journey!

BaconBit: Godzilla vs. Kong Review

A movie with giant monsters punching each other and featuring podcasters who change the world? We’re in! But did we enjoy the latest installment in the MonsterVerse? Visual effects have definitely improved since the last time these two titans met, and the human storylines are just as unimportant. Plus, as per usual, the first part of this Godzilla vs. Kong BaconBit is spoiler-free, and we’ll give you plenty of warning before we enter spoiler territory, so even if you haven’t seen the movie, you can still listen. Roar really loudly, beat your chest with your fists, and then press play.

Episode 297: Twinner Winner – Song Titles

Hello! Or should we say Hello? This episode of Baconsale consists of 22 mini musical match-ups between popular songs with the same titles, including such hits as “Crazy,” “The Power of Love,” “It’s My Life,” and “Shout.” Kent and Joel are deciding which songs should be the default on your Amazon Echo, or which one should be erased from existence, depending on who you talk to. We confuse each other at times regarding which tune we’re talking about, but we hope to keep things clear for you, and we hope you enjoy our terrible falsetto singing and occasional dolphin noises. Press play to hear how to pronounce Sarah McLachlan in Kent’s native language. Go to Baconsale.com for the Spotify playlist of all the songs we matched-up against each other on this episode.

Episode 295: Movie Rebuffs

The year was 2021, and Baconsale was discussing movies that had never been released in theaters. Whether it was due to financial issues, creative differences, or just some really terrible ideas, these productions didn’t make it to the big screen, even though some money and/or significant time was spent on them. Kent and Joel are each going to present five film pitches to Zack, and then he’s going to decide if their demise was justified, or if they deserve another chance. Who knows? One day this episode may be out of date because one of these duds might actually get produced & distributed. Press play to hear about silly sequels, awful adaptations, and impossible ideas.

BaconBit: Raya and the Last Dragon Review

Raya and the Last Dragon, Disney’s latest animated feature, is available on Disney+ with Premier Access, but is it worth the extra cost to see early? That’s the question we’re answering today on this BaconBit. Kent has seen this film twice, Joel has seen it once, and Zack has seen it 0.5 times. We’re each going to give our spoiler-free review first, and then we’ll let you know when we’re going to start talking spoilers for this movie so you can listen even if you haven’t seen it yet. Episode 292: Baconsale-Approved Spoiler Etiquette

***SPOILER ALERT!*** In this episode, Baconsale is discussing spoiler etiquette for movies and TV shows. And as the spoiler prophets that we are, we’re going to teach you how to carefully navigate an increasingly online community and avoid ruining big twists or major plot points. Our guidelines are intended for both the spoiler and the spoilee as we give suggested timelines, educate you in Spoiler L.A.W., and propose punishments for breaking the official rules. Press play, but be warned: we give away the entire plot of The Little Mermaid (1989) during this process.

Episode 291: The Dresden-philes

Ventas servitas! On this episode of Baconsale, we’re discussing a character from a popular book series whose name is Harry—a dark-haired orphan who’s also a wizard…but it’s probably not the magical Harry you’re thinking of. We’re talking about Harry Dresden. Steven Ross is a big fan of The Dresden Files and he’s joining us today to raise awareness about the novels. Steven has read (or listened) to all of the books, Joel has read a handful, Kent read the first one just for this episode, and we’ve intentionally left Zack in the dark so he can be the everyman and make sure we don’t get too far into the Nevernever. Toot-Toot! Press play!

Episode 290: Movin’ Right Along with the Muppets

Hi-ho, listener! It’s time to play the music and light the lights, because on this episode of Baconsale, we’re talking about the Muppet films. We’ve watched ten Muppetational movies and we’re going to rank them from worst to best. Joel is still a kid at heart and loves almost everything the Muppets have done, whereas Kent has grown a little more cynical as he’s gotten older, and Zack thinks that all the films (and this episode) are about 20 minutes too long. Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection—the lovers, the dreamers, press play.

Feb 15, 20211h 27m

Episode 289: You Had Me at Rom Com

Last time Baconsale talked about romantic comedies, it went off without a Hitch, so we (Love) Actually decided to do it again! We’ve come up with just under 13 (Going on 30) categories to showcase some of the most popular rom coms of all time. Plus, Zack, our personal Wedding Singer, is also going to quiz Kent and Joel on their knowledge of these movies. And with romantic steak street tacos on the line, the stakes have never been higher. We’ll discuss Julia Roberts (to see if She’s All That), which films left us Sleepless (in Seattle), and which actors look Pretty (in Pink). CORAL! Press play to help us determine what is “peak Streep.”

BaconBit: Kent’s Virtual Sundance Adventure

A lot has changed since our last Sundance film festival recap, including the festival itself. This year, film geeks around the world streamed (strom?) indie movies from the comfort of their own home, making snide remarks to an empty room. Kent watched 26 of these films in six days! His brain is fried, but he’s ready to give us some highlights (and lowlights) of what he saw, including reviews of Prisoners of the Ghostland, CODA, Eight for Silver, On the Count of Three, Mass, In the Earth, The Sparks Brothers, Cryptozoo, and John and the Hole. Press play to hear about the college draft for film buffs.

Episode 288: Tabletop of the World

Baconsale is ready to pop a lot of trouble because, once again, we’re going to rank popular tabletop games. From ancient Mesopotamia to the 2000s, we’re including such favorites as Uno, Chutes & Ladders, Boggle, Taboo, Chess, Checkers, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Ticket to Ride, Cranium, and Blokus. As we move along the board, we’ll talk about the history of these games, discuss unusual versions (Body Boggle, anyone?), and we’re surprised by a musical number that makes the tough guys tumble. Kent and Joel agree way too much, Zack isn’t sorry about going his own way, and we just hope you roll the dice and tier each party game along with us. Press play to turn the crank, and snap the plank, and boot the marble right down the chute!

Episode 287: 2021 Prediction Pageant

Wow. Who could have predicted everything that happened last year? Baconsale tried and, believe it or not, we actually got a few things right! So, once again, we are going to attempt to read the tea leaves for the coming year. We’ll forecast celebrity breakups, predict “sexy” Halloween costumes, discuss new fast food meat alternatives, guess sporting event winners, warn of reptilian takeovers and, of course, predict box office flops & talk about movies we’re looking forward to this year (if they actually come out). Plus, with so many lunch bets on the line, the stakes have never been higher. Press play start a wi-fight!

Jan 25, 20211h 33m

Episode 286: Best & Worst Movies of 2020-ish

Baconsale is kicking off our seventh season by talking about our top five & bottom five films from last year. Joel is a little drunk with power because his method of picking movies is quite suitable for this situation, whereas Kent was actually able to scrap together a list of favorites from the dearth of movies released in 2020—even if he had to grade on a curve. Along the way, Zack attempts a FOUL pun, Hans Zimmer gets called out as a hack, and we try our darndest not to give anything away about our top picks (but we don’t mind spoiling the worst ones). Press play to initiate the temporal pincer.

Episode 285: Execute Order Season Six

On this, our sixth season finale, Baconsale is looking back at our shows from this past year and talking about some of our favorite moments, both on the air and behind the scenes. Our schedule was destroyed by the pandemic (which Zack may have caused), but we still managed to create some memorable episodes, including when Kent promoted Helga Sinclair, Joel offended the cult of stuffing, we impersonated southern ants (who HATE grits), we safely invited guests into the Baconcave, we created the Parents Guide Game (which swept the nation!), and we sang….a LOT. Plus, we even dare to bring up the terrifying Scream Queen. 2020 has been a trying time for all of us, but we hope that the weekly episodes have helped lift your spirits in some way—they certainly lifted ours. Press play to hear our sincere thanks to our listener and to our patrons for helping us get through season six of Baconsale!

Episode 284: Here Comes Satan Claws

You’d better watch out, you’d better not cry, you’d better not pout, I’m telling you why… because some of these creepy Christmas creatures will beat you, kill you, or eat you. On this episode of Baconsale, we’re sharing unusual holiday folklore from around the world, but primarily from Germany, Iceland, Austria, and France (because Europe is weird). It’s dangerous to go alone on this perilous path, so we’ve invited Chris Draudt, a Krampus expert/enthusiast to join us. Listen as we butcher the names of Knecht Ruprecht, Père Fouettard, Mari Lwyd, Kallikantzaros and other companions of Saint Nicholas. But beware, some of these traditional yuletide tales can get pretty grim. Grab a bundle of birch branches, pull that potato out of your shoe, and press play!

Dec 14, 20201h 11m

Episode 283: Have Yourself a Merry Little Podcast

It’s beginning to look a lot like Baconsale is going to do another Christmas song category show! It’s been five years since our last holiday music episode, but Joel is more than happy to do another one. Kent, on the other hand, is a bit of a Scrooge when it comes to yuletide tunes. Nevertheless, we’ve come up with twelve categories—including Best Duet/Collaboration, the One You Can’t Resist Singing, Most Underrated, and Worst Acapella Cover—and Kent, Joel & Zack are going to each pick a winner for each one. Come on, it’s lovely weather for a podcast together with you! Press play! You can find the official Spotify playlist of songs we discussed on this episode at Baconsale.com.

Episode 282: Cable, IMAX, Erase – Fun Dip

You may have heard us play Cable, IMAX, Erase on Baconsale before, but never like this. Yes, for the first few rounds we’re going to take three movies and decide which one we’d watch in theaters, which one we’d watch on standard-definition television, and which one we’d erase from existence. However, then we’re going to change things up and adapt the game to food, bands, candy, actors & actresses, restaurants, and more! Joel tries his best to be the villain, but Kent steals the crown back pretty quickly. And watch out for when Zack attacks! Press play to hear us hem & haw about decisions that don’t really have any consequences.

Episode 281: Time to Talk Turkey

Imagine that it’s Thanksgiving. You’re at the serving table. Which foods get the prime real estate on your dinner plate? That’s the question we’re asking today on Baconsale. Kent, Joel, and Zack are going to tier turkey, rank rolls, score stuffing, grade gravy, criticize cranberry sauce, and put pie in its place with the help of our special guest, Jennifer Kielkowski. We’ll also discuss the history of Turkey Day, share family traditions, and give a few fun facts with the leftover time. Please pass the potatoes and press play.

Episode 280: You Wanna Pizza Me?

Back in 2016, we ranked popular pizza chains, but on this episode we’re bringing it home and popping it in the oven because Baconsale is ranking frozen pizzas. We’ve tested & ranked 25 popular pizza brands and scientifically identified the top five best and the bottom five worst. We’ve included thin crusts, rising crusts, gluten-free crusts, and everything in between. We also have a saucy discussion about the history of frozen pizza, our experiences with the taste testing, governmental cheese regulation, what “uncured pepperoni” means, and Zack’s lack of enthusiasm for this freezer favorite. Preheat your device to 400 degrees, then press play!

As we’re Ridin’ along, no band or artist is Bulletproof, because the one-hit wonder police are here to Shake It up a bit. When some music match-ups Collide, it’s a bit of a Paralyzer for Kent, Joel, and Zack. It’s not just for kids, though. This evolving spreadsheet of 80 frightening films could be for anyone who wants to dip their toes into the spooky swimming pool. Kent was thrown into the deep end as a kid and has his opinions about the flicks that Joel picked, while Zack is a horror novice who isn’t afraid of clowns, however he’s terrified of lady Gremlins. Press play to be another one of Joel’s guinea pigs in this Baconsale classroom of terror! And visit Baconsale.com to see the spreadsheet we discuss in this episode.

Kent, Joel, Zack, and Jacob are all going to select music for things like their high school experience, their dating lives, their earliest childhood memories, and even their farewell songs. Episode 271: 10 Essential Films with Mats

The last time Mats was here, he had us watch a bunch of TV shows he enjoyed. Now it’s time for Baconsale to turn the tables on him. Kent and Joel have selected ten films for Mats to watch. These are not all best picture winners, these aren’t the highest-grossing films of all time, they may not even be our personal favorites, but we have chosen them because of their initial impact and the long-lasting influence they’ve had on pop culture. They are, in chronological order: The Wizard of Oz (1939), Psycho (1960), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), Jaws (1975), Rocky (1976), Star Wars (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Ghostbusters (1984), Jurassic Park (1993), and The Matrix (1999). Mats had only seen one of these movies beforehand and all of them were released before he was born, so press play to hear his fresh takes, unique insights, and his occasionally incorrect opinions (according to us).

BaconBit: Mulan (2020) Review

Let’s get down to business to discuss Mulan. Disney had made another live-action remake of a 90s animated classic and decided to make this one a little more realistic. Or did they? Kent and Joel have watched the movie and are ready to share their opinions. We keep things spoiler-free for the first part of this BaconBit, but after that we’ll let you know what they kept, what they cut out, and if this version of the story works. Therefore, it’s finally time for Kent to go full fanboy as we discuss his favorite director’s movies and rank them from eleven to one. Are you watching closely? Because along the way, we point out any and all Michael Caine appearances with poorly done impersonations, Zack expresses some serious “McConaughate,” and Joel continuously reminds you that Nolan has directed Following, Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet. Why so serious? Stop waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away, and press play to enter the fifth dimension of Baconsale.

Believe it or not, we’re talking on air about the theme songs you hear on the TV! We had so much fun discussing the greatest music on television last time, that we’ve decided to do it again, and, much to Kent’s dismay, we can’t use any songs that any of us used on the last show. On this episode of Baconsale, we’re picking answers for such categories as Best Theme of The Past Decade, Doesn’t Fit the Show, Gets You Pumped Up, and Most Annoying. There are some strangely dark turns along the way (poor Barney), and Zack gets a few votes of no confidence, but there must be some magic clue inside these gentle walls, ‘cause all we see is a tower of dreams, and real love burstin' out of every seam! Put down that tossed salad and those scrambled eggs and press play!

Episode 267: The Test of Time—Our Childhood Edition

Kids watch the darndest things, and the hosts of Baconsale were once children with questionable tastes in movies. Therefore, on this episode, Kent, Joel, and Zack are all bringing a lesser-known childhood favorite to the table for the others to critique. We even got Jacob to submit a film for this discussion. Our choices are kind of strange—in fact, you may not have heard of some of these direct-to-video picks—but we’ll see if they still hold up decades after they were released. Press play to hear which features were filmed for your family!

Episode 266: Our Claim to Shame

Look, we’re not perfect here at Baconsale. And despite many listener believing that we’ve watched every movie and TV series ever, it’s simply not true. So on this episode, we’re acknowledging the gaps in our pop culture knowledge and admitting to popular films and television shows that we have not seen. This isn’t easy for us, and these painful confessions may be shocking for some. However, we’re going to do our best to be sensitive to one another’s vulnerability…for the first few minutes. Press play to hear which classic horror movie Kent hasn’t experimented with, a major martial arts blind spot for Joel, and whether or not Zack will go to prison for one of his omissions.

BaconBit: A Toast to Breakfast Drinks

We couldn’t fit all of these morning beverages into our breakfast food tiering show, so we decided to take another ridiculous dive into liquid refreshment and rank popular drink choices such as orange juice, milk, coffee, energy drinks, hot chocolate, tomato juice, and more on this BaconBit. As we do so, we learn that grapefruit juice can kill you, everything seems to make Zack sick, and Kent cheats…or maybe he’s just bad at math. Press play to enjoy a freshly-squeezed cup of Baconsale!

Episode 265: Breakfast and the Furious

Breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day. But let’s face it, some breakfast meals are more important than others. So, on this episode of Baconsale, we’re ranking popular morning dishes, from bacon and the incredible, edible egg to fruit and fancy yogurt. We’ll also talk about the history of these dishes, which may include some ridiculous attempts at foreign accents. Joel has a deep love for most breakfast foods (much like Ron Swanson), Zack is fond of gruel and thinks things just taste better in New York, while Kent has a strange dedication to Pop Tarts and other bachelor cuisine. Wake up, pop a Dutch baby in the oven, and press play to join the breakfast party!

Episode 264: Putting Rush in the Limelight

We’re modern-day warriors with a mean, mean stride and today's episode is a mean, mean ride. Our guest and working man, Ryan, is joining us to gush about his favorite band, Rush. Zack is already a big fan of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart, but Kent and Joel are relatively new to their music—however, they prepared for this show by listening to all 19 of their studio albums. And while there may be subdivisions in our fandom, we all come together to discuss the history of Canada’s greatest progressive rock group and try to bring them closer to the heart. Press play to listen to this extended play episode, which, let’s face it, is actually shorter than some Rush songs.

Episode 263: The Best Disney Sidekick (Tournament Finals)

Sidekicks. You give them an inch, they swim all over you. And on this episode of Baconsale, we’re going to finish what we started and allow the secondary protagonists & antagonists of popular Disney movies duke it out in a no-holds-barred battle to the death. We don’t always agree, and it isn’t pretty when some beloved animated characters meet a terrible demise, but Kent, Joel and Zack are determined to complete the bracket and declare an ultimate winner. Will Olaf live to see another summer when he goes up against Timon & Pumbaa? Who has more horsepower, Mater or Maximus? And will the world finally know the name of Helga Sinclair? Press play to find out! And print your own advanced bracket at Baconsale.com.
