MP S03.E30: The Big Bang

Incarcerated at the county jail, Michael gets help from an unexpected visitor: DR. PETER BURNS. Apparently the whole time he's been gone he was just lying low on the advice of his excellent attorney, who's cleared him on all legal charges. Peter does still need to convince the medical board not to pull his license, which is why he's going to bail Michael out: to extort him into extolling Peter's skills as a doctor, which Michael is all too willing to do. (Peter's also romancing Kimberly all of a sudden, but that couldn't be so that she will ALSO vouch for him with the medical board...could it?!) Kimberly's mirror antagonist is also still around, and urging her to do harm to all the people who are trying to destroy her life; she doesn't need much convincing. Billy and Brooke are hurtling toward the altar, telling Hayley they want to hold the ceremony in a matter of days. Amanda is thrilled to be the one to tell Alison, when she phones the agency looking for Brooke, about the engagement. Alison calls Jo to get her advice on what to do, but makes the mistake of calling at dinner time; Jess grabs the phone away from Jo in the first of several controlling, intimidating, and violent moves against her. So while Alison may want Jo's help in stopping Brooke and Billy's wedding, Jo's...kind of got her own problems at the moment. Speaking of problems: Paul assures Matt that he's got one less, since Carol has moved out. Now they can start having their relationship out in the open! Paul will even give Matt a key to the house! Things sure are going well for Matt! It seems! Things AREN'T going so well for Jane, since the money she got from Sydney didn't cover all her debt, and now the company's in foreclosure. Finding out Amanda's newest client is Mackenzie Hart, Jane's biggest design idol, spurs her to contrive a meeting with the company's CEO, Mackenzie's husband Richard, to try to get a job. It works! Jane also gets a date, and then some, not knowing how complicated things are between the Harts. How do all these plotlines come together to send us off into the summer hiatus DYING to know what happens next? We'll tell all in our BIG podcast on this two-part season finale, "The Big Bang"! MP S03.E29: Framing Of The Shrews

Just in case Amanda wasn't fully convinced in the last episode that Michael was stalking her at home, Kimberly ALSO shows up in the parking garage at D&D to creep Amanda out by following her to her car, which Kimberly has also tagged with a gigantic "Die, Bitch" on the driver's side. Amanda then gets on board, threatening Michael herself if he doesn't leave her alone, not knowing that Kimberly intends to trash the beach house, claw up her own face, and entrap Michael for having "beaten" her. But...there's more. Eek. While Alison gets her feet under her in Hong Kong, she's also anxious to find out what Billy thought of the heartfelt letter she gave Brooke to deliver to him, which is why it's too bad that (a) Brooke read and then shredded Alison's declaration of love and (b) wrote another one that basically left it to Billy whether he wanted to stay in her life or not. Jake wakes up in the hospital after surgery entirely convinced that Jess was behind the shooting, and is unimpressed by both Jess's and Jo's insistence that Jess is innocent. Jess's accomplice also shows up looking for the back half of his payment for services rendered, but since Jake is still alive, Jess feels he's already paid plenty. Matt tells Paul about his wife Carol's unsettling visit and lets him know he doesn't date married men. But when Paul says he's legally separated, Matt decides Paul's a good bet after all, not knowing that Paul is actually playing mind games with both Matt and Carol. MP S03.E28: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Jake is still not okay with Jess and Jo's burgeoning relationship, so much so that he kicks Jess out and fires him from Shooters -- and, when Jo tries importuning him on Jess's behalf, lets her know he's not interested in seeing or talking to her as long as she and Jess are an item. In retaliation, Jess hits up a local pool hall and picks a fight with some toughs, apparently to determine whether they're up for the job of messing with Little Brother (drink!). Brooke is such a good friend to Alison that she arranges for her to interview for a position at Brooke's daddy's company, which comes with a fat salary, and a surprise: it's at his international headquarters in Hong Kong! Billy is all set to talk Alison out of moving so far from her friends, until Brooke urges him not to get in the way of Alison's career progress. What will he do?! Sydney meets with Jim again and gets a surprise of her own: he's an FBI agent who infiltrated Vince's drug ring and is juuuuust about to make a bust. But he likes her, so he advises her to resign as president of Mancini Designs, effective...well, a while ago. And she can't tell Jane because he can only save one of them. Things are still going SO great for Matt and Paul that, yes, it's time for him to find out Paul is married to a lady. Matt is ready to leave Paul alone for good until Paul appeals to Matt's innate kindness and begs him to help Paul work through his feelings: Paul never slept with a man before Matt! He says! Finally, we find out what Kimberly's actually plotting against Michael: she's going to destroy his career, and use Amanda -- and, frankly, Amanda's reasonable suspicions about Michael's ethics, medical and otherwise -- to do it. MP S03.E27: Hose By Any Other Name

Sydney's gotten approached with a business deal from a couple of guys who just want to use the label to import and sell their pantyhose from China, and who know she used to work for Lauren. What could go wrong?! (You can probably guess.) She also happens to be home for the latest installment of Jess's attempt to bone Jo against every wall in Los Angeles, and since she hears everything on the other side of said wall at her place, she decides it's her place to snitch on them to Jake. Brooke does seem to be enjoying sex with Billy on its merits, but it also has fringe benefits, such as when he almost immediately betrays Alison's confidence and tells Brooke that Alison's On Notice with the D&D board: if she screws up one more thing, she's out. Obviously, she's in the process of screwing up one more thing when Brooke passes this intel on to Amanda, so she barely has to put in any effort to undermine Alison with this one. Kimberly gets the honour of an early graduation from Camp No More Victims after violently assaulting Sarge, and returns to Los Angeles with crazier eyes than ever, and an as-yet-unspecified plan of revenge against Michael. And when Wilshire Memorial's new plastic surgeon, Paul Graham, learns that Matt is gay, he's immediately intrigued. But he's also a guy dating Matt, so...yes, there is something wrong with him. MP S03.E26: Melrose Impossible

Brooke and Amanda's plot to depose Alison gets a convenient boost when a rep for D&D's latest very important client happens to have a connection to Brooke's father: she's able to leverage what she knows about his past to manipulate Alison into pitching a concept that will, shall we say, not land. Meanwhile, Amanda is ALSO being set upon constantly by Michael, trying to talk her into seeing him again with compliments, begging, threats, and pasta. Kimberly has decided to change her situation by enrolling in an intensive program called No More Victims, which aims to teach her and her fellow boot campers how to regain control of their lives and learn to assert themselves. (We're not sure Kimberly's problem is that she was insufficiently assertive, but...sure!) Sydney approaches Jane with an offer to save the design firm with Sydney's ill-gotten insurance-settlement gains, and Jane is so desperate that she accepts, even on extremely unfavorable terms. And the more Jo tries to resist Jess's advances, the closer he gets. You may find it impossible to resist our podcast on "Melrose Impossible"! MP S03.E25: All About Brooke

Michael's having a perfectly pleasant evening at home waiting for his wife to hurry up and die already when Sydney unexpectedly shows up and foils his plan. He's so distracted pretending to try to revive Kimberly that he doesn't notice Sydney stealing the suicide note for future blackmail purposes! Once Kimberly is conscious again, Sydney tells her about the scene she walked up on, but Kimberly denies she was trying to die by suicide: she says Michael poisoned her, and that if Sydney will help her plant evidence to that effect and also destroy her note, she'll give Sydney half the insurance settlement. When the cops show up and don't find the suicide note in their search of the beach house, Michael figures out who probably has it. Whom will Sydney be loyal to! Oh yeah: in the midst of all this, Michael also proposes to Amanda. It doesn't go great. Speaking of Amanda: she gets Billy to ask Alison to give her a job at D&D, and it works! Amanda returns with a great attitude even in a position MUCH more junior than the one she formerly held, but also sets about undermining Alison with the help of her secret accomplice, Brooke. Of course, Amanda could probably just wait for Alison to screw things up on her own, as she is busily doing with Billy and...whatever their relationship is now. Jess's attempts to worm his way back into Jake's life (or possibly take it over) get a big boost when someone leaves their credit card at Shooters. Jess then gets to use it to be a big man paying for dinner out for him, Jake, and Jo, but Jake knows just enough about Jess's financial history to be suspicious about how Jess got a credit card. Will Jo's empathy for Jess draw her closer, and leave Jake on the outside of their relationship? Hear all about it in our podcast on "All About Brooke"! MP S03.E24: To Live & Die In Malibu

As Amanda battles back to consciousness, Michael's got his own fights: Kimberly reveals that she's returned early from Minnesota, she doesn't buy his stories about why Amanda's lingerie is all over the beach house, and he is officially on notice. This just convinces him to accelerate his exit plans, but then Kimberly runs into the city's insurance guy at the hospital before Michael does and takes possession of that big settlement check, forcing Michael to make nice. Meanwhile, Alison continues being a bitch to everyone at D&D except Brooke. And why not -- Brooke is actually useful, offering her dad's palatial estate as a photo shoot location when another one falls through. Having Billy on her literal home turf causes Brooke to escalate her mind games with him, flirting super-hard just before her fiancé shows up. Surprise! Brooke later ends up at the hospital when Billy goes to visit Amanda, and Amanda makes a note. After making peace with Jake, Jess decides to test it by showing up in L.A. unannounced and manipulating Jake into giving him a job and letting Jess crash at his place. Sydney threatens Jess with exposure when she catches him rifling through the files in Jake's office, but it seems as though the Hanson brothers' family ties are going to be too strong for her to break...at least for now. MP S03.E23: Love And Death 101

The members of D&D's board of directors have taken notice of Amanda's increasing number of absences, and they've decided on a course of action: canning her and installing Alison in her place. It takes less than a day for Alison to learn that part of what made Amanda so surly in the role was the demands of the job. Desperate not to run into Alison, Amanda begs Michael to get her out of the complex, so he sends Kimberly to Minnesota to interview for a job at the Mayo Clinic so that Amanda can stay at the beach house in her absence. At the same time, Michael's also running a scam on the city, claiming the car accident five million episodes ago was caused by dangerous road conditions. He's close to a settlement, but Kimberly knows nothing about the lawsuit and is signing a bunch of papers he hands her without reading them because, apparently, she's forgotten...everything about her husband. Jake gets a call from an old friend in Washington State: Jake's mother has died, and he's stressed about going back and facing the older half-brother he's never mentioned -- including never in the entire time he was dating Jo, apparently. But she offers to go with him to lend moral support, and he's going to need it, because Jess (Dan Cortese!) has a big chip on his shoulder about Jake moving away and wants to make sure Jake knows at every possible opportunity. MP S03.E22: And The Winner Is…

Amanda and Michael are back from New York and navigating their new circumstances. Kimberly tells Michael she knows he and Amanda shared a room. Amanda doesn't think their dalliance should get in the way of her treatment. And yet...this guy does enough fancy footwork to get himself and Amanda to a resort in Santa Barbara AND Kimberly's sign-off. Amanda leaves Alison in charge of submitting D&D's paperwork to the Century Advertising Awards, and even okays Alison to "let it slip" that Amanda may be dying, just in case that shifts any votes her way. But when Alison gets there, she meets the charming coordinator, Brooke Armstrong (Kristin Davis!), who easily talks Alison into submitting her own account against Amanda's in the same category. Having tried and failed to talk Jane out of dating Jake, Sydney manufactures a situation at a rough bar from which Jake will be forced to extricate her. But will this succeed in pushing them closer together? You can't lose by listening to our podcast on "And The Winner Is..."! MP S03.E21: Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Dinner At Eight

Amanda having entrusted her treatment to Michael, the two of them head to New York so that they can doorstop the famous Dr. Steele and convince him to admit Amanda into his cancer study. But it's going to be hard once Kimberly calls Dr. Steele first and defames Michael, claiming his ultimate goal is to undermine Steele's study and get himself set up with one on the same treatment plan instead. And that's just the disaster Amanda knows about: she has no idea that, back in L.A., Alison and Billy are eating shit from a disgruntled client, who demands a brand-new campaign with one day's turnaround. After that pitch also fails to impress him, Alison tries one last gambit: a sob story, and not her own. Things are devolving quickly in Rawlings's police brutality case. Jo knows all too well what happens to civilians who try to challenge police power, and only gets more terrified about what could happen to her after Rawlings's victim dies. Matt volunteers to turn her photos over to the Internal Affairs detective and keep Jo out of it. How? That's what we would also like to know! After having spotted Jake and Jane getting cozy, Sydney tries to suss out what might actually be happening between them by volunteering as Jane's personal assistant. Instead, Jane asks Jake to give Sydney back her job at Shooters. Sydney is happy to accept when she thinks it means proximity to one another will lead to a reunion for her and Jake, but once he tells her it won't...everyone should probably start getting scared of her again. MP S03.E20: St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

Once Sydney gets to see daylight again, she assesses her options and decides to stay at the compound. Martin takes this as proof that he's broken her, apparently, because he shows her where they keep the Abbot Way arsenal and starts right in on small arms training. What they don't know is that, back in L.A., Jane's been doing some research on Martin, figured out he's bad news, and convinced Jake to come with her to the compound to try to break Sydney out. Amanda has started chemotherapy, but is (of course) a terrible patient who refuses to acknowledge the physical toll it's going to take on her and adjust her working life in any way. As she leans more and more on Michael, Kimberly gets more and more suspicious. When Rawlings stalks Matt to Shooters and corners him into an introduction to Jo, he volunteers to be her chaperone while she shoots some of the seedier L.A. street life for a newspaper. But when he gets a call about a drug dealer, Jo gets a little too curious, and finds out what Kimberly already knew: Rawlings just loves abusing his power as a police officer -- and when he's got a repeat offender in front of him, that's going to manifest in a pretty brutal beating, which Jo, secretly, photographs extensively. MP S03.E19: Boxing Sydney

Though Amanda has apparently spent the entire time since we saw her last trying to ignore what Michael told her about the lump in her neck, he is refusing to let up, and another doctor at the hospital confirms his findings: Amanda does have Hodgkin's Disease. She resists Michael's forcible attempts to continue necessary testing, bitches out everyone who steps in her path at the office, but finally confides in Billy, swearing him to secrecy. Is this a confidence he can keep -- even from Alison, as Amanda expressly specifies? HMMM. Rikki gets Sydney out to the desert to a "retreat" with the rest of the Abbot followers, which apparently does not at all live up to the picture Rikki had painted of a resort-like experience. Sydney is sketched out when her assignment to perform the "tea service" exposes her to Martin, in bed with two ladies, and even more put off the next day when Martin orders his acolytes to write to their families asking for money. Sydney tells him she wants to leave, and he assures her she may...but is she, really? Matt tells John, the detective on his case, about Kimberly's involvement in the attack and her ongoing verbal threats against him -- though he also tells John that he doesn't want to escalate the situation, and, when John hits on him, that he's not looking for a relationship. John doesn't really hear any of that, apparently thinking the way to Matt's heart is through police harassment of his enemies. We take the gloves off in our podcast on "Boxing Sydney"! MP S03.E18: Another Perfect Day In Hell

Someone puts sugar in Jo's gas tank. Someone slashes all the samples on the rack at Jane's studio. Someone breaks in at Jo's and steals all her cameras and gear. Jane points the finger at Sydney (who did, after all, have access to the motorcycle and the garments), who denies it...but the crime spree isn't over, and all the crimes do seem to target people Sydney considers her enemies. If not her, who?! Billy is concerned that Amanda seems run-down at work and even testier than usual, though she shakes off his concerns about her health. He's about to have his own worries, anyway: Alison's sister Meredith is in town, with a big announcement about her own sexual history, and an even bigger crush on Billy. The bigwigs at Wilshire Memorial can no longer ignore the possible mental health issues going untreated amongst members of their staff, so they order mandatory psych evaluations, to be co-ordinated by Matt. Kimberly tries to wriggle out of it by deploying her charm on Matt (which is probably something her evaluator would want to know about, actually), but it doesn't work, which means her problems at work are only going to escalate, and Matt should probably start watching his back. MP S03.E17: They Shoot Mothers, Don’t They?

You thought a standard Season 3 episode of Melrose Place crammed in a lot of drama? STRAP IN, because here comes a for-no-reason midseason double episode, and it is a doozy. Amanda and Peter are still pretending to be a couple while secretly plotting against each other. Peter and Caitlin's plan to pry Amanda out of her contract is to arrange for everyone at the agency to take a drug test for insurance purposes, and for Amanda to fail it because the "antibiotics" Peter's prescribed her are actually THC...and since the only drug study at the hospital involving THC is the one Peter's just put Michael in charge of, Peter's hands will be clean. But Amanda finds one pill, gets Matt to have it analyzed, and confronts Peter with the evidence in order to keep her job. So then Peter has to escalate by arranging to "catch" Amanda and Michael in his office after hours, injecting her with a drug that will imitate the appendicitis cramps, and wheeling her into surgery she will not survive. Will Michael have the stomach to go along with it?! Jake insists on accompanying Jo to the Carters' to get Austin back, even though she is completely unable to be cool and reveals herself to Mrs. Carter while she's supposed to be waiting for the cops to come charge the Carters with kidnapping. Mr. Carter then shoots Jo in the back, which kind of complicates the emergency custody hearing set to take place when Jo still has an arm in a sling and Mr. Carter is still out on bail. Billy gets increasingly bitter and suspicious about what's actually going on between Alison and Terry, until he finally confirms it by spying on her at an AA meeting and seeing them mildly PDA-ing. Little does he know how quickly Terry wants things to progress, even after he almost falls back off the wagon after a disastrous performance in his first game back after rehab. After Amanda informs Sydney she's raising her rent by kind of a lot, Jane tells her to find a roommate, and Rikki -- a fellow waitress -- seems perfect! She's full of opinions about all Sydney's neighbors, and also about ways Sydney could improve her life if she just started attending the same self-help meetings Rikki does with her "guru," Martin! And hey, if Sydney can't afford his courses, maybe she could just work it off in his offices! Take aim at our latest podcast on "They Shoot Mothers, Don't They?"! MP S03.E16: Bye, Bye Baby

Amanda suddenly has some competition for Head Bitch In Charge at D&D when she walks into her office and sees JASMINE GUY sitting at her desk. Guy plays Caitlin Mills, an efficiency expert Peter has hired to shore up operations at the agency; Amanda is immediately suspicious -- and, as with every decision Peter makes, she has good reason. Amanda develops a scheme to try to blackmail Peter regarding a pretty obviously fake drug trial he's supposedly running, and maybe Caitlin has her off her game, because once again Amanda tries to leverage Michael, and we all know how that goes. ANYWAY: this is the snake pit Alison is returning to from rehab (and, despite what Amanda told her at Christmas, she also still totally wants to fire Alison), but Billy is really putting himself out to help her ramp back up. Unfortunately for him, the only ramp Alison wants to be on is the one that will get her closer to Terry -- you know, because he's really tall. Now that Jo has her baby back, she also needs a full-time nanny, even though as far as we can tell she's not working at all, and also she's planning to move back to New York, pretty much immediately. The perfect prospect falls right into her lap, almost like magic! Jo should have probably learned a lesson or two about trusting people who seem to be unselfishly offering their assistance with her baby, but she hasn't. Wave hello to our podcast on "Bye, Bye Baby"! MP S03.E15: Holiday On Ice

Already in a rage about Peter's controlling behavior, Amanda adopts a bah humbug attitude she takes out on everyone around her. And we all know the remedy: Bruce's unquiet spirit comes back to warn her about what will happen to her if she doesn't change her ways. Now that Jo has confirmed her maternity of the baby Kimberly's been raising, she apparently has no compunction telling everyone about it, including Peter, who orders Michael to return the baby immediately. Jeffrey is so eager to shower Matt with extravagant gifts that Matt can't help expressing his discomfort -- and how could that possibly backfire on him, in a loving relationship where everyone is definitely totally secure? After seeing Billy and Alison together on the Twin Oaks campus, Terry accelerates his pursuit of her. And Jane tries to broker a holiday peace between Sydney and their father. MP S03.E14: Sex, Drugs And Rockin’ The Cradle

Alison tries to commit to treatment at Twin Oaks, but keeps getting static from Terry, an NFL star in her group who thinks she's being resistant to the process. After she confronts him about his third-grade-calibre attention-seeking, he admits that there's something to it: he's lashing out because he's also sexually compulsive, and he's drawn to her. When Billy doesn't appear at a special meeting for Twin Oaks clients to thank the people who got them to seek treatment (because, unbeknownst to Alison, Susan never gave him her message), Alison sneaks out and gets wasted, but Terry is waiting when she finds her way back, and helps keep her from getting kicked out. Once Billy finds out about Susan, the love triangle loses a side...but maybe Terry would like to replace her? Michael is hung up on Jane after their one-night-stand, and since he won't take "get lost" for an answer, she redirects the roses he sends her to the beach house, complete with card. Kimberly gives Michael an ultimatum, and he chooses their family, just in time for "Michael Jr." to start running a terrible fever. Scared to have him admitted to the hospital and have to answer a bunch of questions, Kimberly tells Michael why: she bought him on the black market! But when Jo hears from Matt that the Mancini baby isn't well, she convinces Michael to test his DNA and confirm her parentage. Two couples are on the rocks: Sydney and Jake, because of the whole kidnapping thing; and Amanda and Peter, because he's too controlling. And with Matt and Jeffrey spending more and more time together, the former thinks it's time for them to consider moving in together, while the latter is -- you guessed it -- scared and weird about it. MP S03.E13: Just Say No

Having canned Amanda for her leaking at the end of the last episode, Bruce is pretty sure he's righted D&D's ship and is ready to set sail with a bigger role for Alison (which...is maybe proof of the bad judgment that got him here). Then he finds out that a consortium of doctors has bought up so much stock that he's no longer majority shareholder. He's all set to prove to the new overlords that he's still fit to run the agency until he finds out the consortium is actually Peter, and that his replacement is Amanda. He does not take this news well! When Amanda takes over, she immediately promotes Billy and orders him to fire Alison -- who, by the way, is now drinking so much that she doesn't even remember all the abuse she's heaping on Billy and Susan. He seeks advice from Matt on how to proceed. Cue the intervention! Chris drives Sydney to Las Vegas, but instead of strong-arming her (or worse), he sets about seducing her, trying to impress her with lush accommodations and expensive clothes and jewellery. Everything's going great while he's winning at the tables! Then he stops winning and Sydney decides she'd better call home for help. The trouble is that once Jake, Jane, and Michael arrive, no one really believes Sydney is a kidnap victim -- not even Jake. Jo returns to the beach house on several occasions to try to take back her infant son, but her inchoate frenzy is really no match for Kimberly's careful planning. MP S03.E12: The Doctor Who Rocks The Cradle

After being lucky (oof) enough to have found a mother at the hospital who's about to deliver a baby she knows is stillborn, Kimberly tells Jo it's time to set their plan in motion. Jo has concerns right up to the last minute, but since she also kind of has no other options, she goes through with it, and delivers a healthy baby. Kimberly then does her part marking the baby officially dead in the hospital's records and convincing the Carters' lawyer of what happened. From there...things kind of go left. Jane is thrilled to get that fat $500,000 cheque from Chris's company and trusts him to go ahead and deposit it into the account on which he is now a signatory, since she has a new line to design! Except, whoops, the next thing she knows she's getting called down to the bank to talk about the 20 or so cheques she's about to bounce on that account, which is now empty, thanks to Chris. What now?! Alison did not, in fact, kill that cyclist on Thanksgiving, but she blows above the legal limit at the scene and is immediately arrested for driving drunk; then she's forced to call Billy to bail her out when Zack doesn't answer. Sidelined at work and shamed by Billy for going for the vodka as soon as he drops her at home FROM JAIL, Alison decides her next move is to try to reunite with him? Just when we were starting to like her! Amanda and Peter's scheming at D&D intensifies, with Peter enlisting Amanda to spy on Bruce. She proves an able operative, letting Peter know about a handshake deal on a merger between D&D and another agency. But has Amanda finally outsmarted yourself? MP S03.E11: The Days Of Wine And Vodka

Zack encourages Alison to worry less about what her friends are saying about her recent behavior -- and her drinking, in particular -- and think more about what she really wants. Like a new car! How's she going to pay for the convertible she ends up with? She'll figure it out! Should she go with him to Santa Barbara when she has an early meeting the next day and the last time she did that she slept through her obligation? She sure shouldn't! Does she do it anyway? You bet! Does she end up in exactly the same predicament? Oh boy, does she ever. Since she's starting to get so sloppy that she's letting down her colleagues, she pretty much forces them to call her on it, but she is not ready to hear their fearless feedback at all. A shadowy underworld figure shows up at Shooters and starts threatening Jake with physical harm if he doesn't start paying into his protection racket. Jake refuses, but Sydney -- who knows these people don't screw around from her time with Lauren -- is more receptive to direct appeals with regard to ways she could "pay" Jake's protection money in trade. You know how. Oof. As Kimberly keeps getting more bad news about the difficulties she's going to have in starting a family, she keeps running into Jo at the doctor's office, and gets the story of Jo's legal setback. If she can't help herself, maybe she can help Jo? Matt's parents meet and are quite taken with Jeffrey -- so much that when Matt asks if he may bring him to Thanksgiving, they agree! There's just one problem: if they attend, Matt and Jeffrey may only represent themselves as good friends. Bruce is back on his feet, and back at the office against medical advice, but the news of someone buying up large blocks of troubled D&D stock are not doing his health any favors. MP S03.E10: And Justice For None

It's finally time for the custody hearing in which Jo will face off against the Carters. Apparently Jo's lawyer has just trusted that the character witnesses she's rounded up from the complex will be forceful and effective as opposed to the bunch of dimwitted tramps we know them to be, and puts them on the stand without, as far as we can tell, any kind of preparation or screening. So things already aren't going tremendously well even before Alison gets way too drunk the night before her testimony and messes up Jo's lawyer's big finish (which...somehow was not Jo herself? Seriously, this guy just may not know what he's doing). The reason Alison's out partying too much and ignoring her responsibilities is that she's picked up a drinking buddy -- Zack Phillips (Brian Bloom!), a cool record company executive. He's such a great distraction from her angst over Susan and Billy that he also distracts her from the power plays Amanda is running at the agency following Bruce's incapacitation from a sudden health crisis. Jeffrey and Matt continue figuring out how their relationship is going to work now, and Jane continues not figuring out that Chris is obviously shady in the extreme. Order! MP S03.E09: Dr. Jekyll Saves His Hide

Instead of trying to figure out what the post-medical phase of his career is going to be, Michael is determined to return to his residency at Wilshire Memorial. The only problem is that he still hasn't figured out how to manipulate Peter -- but he won't need to, if he can just get Amanda to push Peter's buttons on Michael's behalf. Obviously Amanda isn't interested in helping Michael out of pure altruism, so she makes him an offer: if she can get Peter to rehire him, Michael will give her his share of Jane's company. There's a lot more blah blah business blah about this, but suffice it to say that a quasi-villain like Amanda should be a lot cannier about monologuing her process. Meanwhile, Jake and Sydney aren't aligned on how to proceed after sleeping together: he's really into her, and she's really worried about sucking him into the maelstrom that is her life. Susan and Alison try to start over in a spirit of honesty, with Susan dating Billy out in the open and Alison being okay with that. As anyone could have guessed, Alison is not actually emotionally prepared to do that, and drinking to dull her feelings about it doesn't help. Matt runs into Jeffrey by chance and finds out why he's been back in Los Angeles for months without getting in touch...and it's a rough one. And we finally meet the lawyer who's been taking all of Jo's money: John Saxon! He was in Enter The Dragon, so he might need a larger-than-average payday so he can get knee surgery or something. MP S03.E08: Love Reeks

After her assault by Chris, Sydney staggers back to Jake's to tell him what happened. This time he's ready to report the news directly to Jane instead of telling it to Jo and hoping it gets back to her, but he's not going to get the chance: Jane and Chris have gone to Las Vegas for the weekend, and when we rejoin them there, we find out that Chris is proceeding with his plans and proposing marriage, which she joyfully accepts! As soon as she hears where they are, Sydney knows what Chris is doing, and decides her best bet to derail his plans is to throw Michael at them -- officially because of their business association, but really because Michael will never stop trying to control Jane. Back in L.A., love is breaking out all over D&D! When Peter sends Amanda a giant bouquet of roses, she's put off by the gesture, but Alison encourages her to give him a chance. Peter's own attempt not to spook Amanda by asking her on a double date to the Hollywood Bowl leads Amanda to invite Billy and the lady of his choice to join them -- what about Susan? Stupid Susan lets Billy overrule all her concerns, and since they both have terrible op sec, Alison catches them kissing in the courtyard. Jo continues to struggle financially with the custody hearing looming; matters aren't helped when she ends up in the hospital and learns the stress of her situation has her gestating an ulcer along with a fetus. MP S03.E07: The Cook, The Creep, His Lover And Her Sister

Sydney is still trying to tell Jane what's been going on between her and Chris and Jane is still steadfastly refusing to hear her. When Jake stops by the studio delivering papers from Amanda and Chris, assuming Jake is a courier, just casually tries to involve him in objectifying Sydney, Jake pushes back. He then reports this to Jo, apparently counting on her to pass it on to Jane, which Jo does...but Jane still doesn't believe it and just takes it back to Chris to spin for her, which he can easily do now that he's had a day and a half to firm up his story. Jane then goes to yell at Jake before kicking Sydney out of her apartment and firing her from the studio. Chris also used his time to get out ahead of his Jake blunder with Sydney's probation officer, who threatens to send Sydney back to the mental institution now that she's unemployed and homeless, which is why it's very handy that Jake has just used the reward money the FBI conveniently gave him for his part in apprehending Brittany to buy Shooters: he can give Sydney a job! After seeing Michael and Kimberly at the agency, Bruce makes Amanda hire them, over her personal objections, for a "real people" coffee ad. Kimberly correctly predicts that Peter's not going to let them do it because it violates hospital rules, but all it takes is a visit from Amanda and her hot legs in her short skirt to convince him to do whatever she wants in order to keep her in his life. Alison's college roommate Susan is passing through town on her way to her new job as a chef in Santa Barbara, intriguing Billy in the process. But when the job falls through, Alison invites Susan to move into her spare bedroom while Susan figures out her next move. This won't be a problem at all! MP S03.E06: No Strings Attached

While Jo and Amanda fret about where he could have gone, Jake turns up at the door of one Vince Connors (total Hey! It's That Guy! Raymond J. Barry). They've never met, but they know each other: Connors is Jake's biological father. Connors thinks Jake is in town to shake him down, but Jake just wants to spend some time with him, so Connors invites him over for a family dinner under the pretext that Jake is his old frat brother's son. Mrs. Connors's hospitality overrides Jake's promise that he would blow town again as soon as the plates had been cleared. Will biological father and son be able to forge a relationship deeper than mere DNA? The show's writers remember that they seeded a storyline about Chris being horny for Sydney a couple of episode and get around to paying it off: he's making obscene phone calls and groping her when Jane can't see him, knowing that Sydney's credibility is nearly at an all-time low. After Alison's complaints about Elizabeth get her fired, Jo encourages Alison to move on like Billy did -- immediately, with Mitch, a tall, blond stranger who's been eyeing her down at Shooters. Is this going to lead anywhere? In fairness to her, he gives her every indication that it will! But there may still be a tough lesson in this for Alison to learn. MP S03.E05: Non-Sexual Healing

Now that Kimberly and Michael have gotten past the times each of them almost killed the other and are now fully committed to marriage, he's going to need to finalize his divorce from Sydney, as Kimberly reminds him. (Though the second she does, he lets her know that, actually, he doesn't want to leave Los Angeles the way she had planned for them to do before he got his memory back, and also, he expects her to start waiting on him like a good little wifey, so how much she will still want to be the third Mrs. Mancini after a few weeks of this treatment is tbd.) Sydney tries to play hardball but can't think of anything Michael could give her. Chris can: Michael could give her his share of Jane's business, which Sydney could then sell back to Jane. Sydney seems ambivalent of giving Jane a win, and resists Jane's calls not to negotiate with Michael without a lawyer present, but for the second time in two episodes, people trying to represent themselves really do have fools for clients! After receiving a mysterious videotape from Palmer indicating that he went out on the Pretty Lady with Jake, Amanda finds out that the vessel blew up, and that it's presumed that there are no survivors. (Dealing with Alison and Billy's petty crap -- now revolving around Billy's attraction to their new assistant, Elizabeth -- does not prove to be a welcome respite from her worries.) MP S03.E04: Grand Delusions

Amanda is none too pleased to have her fugitive dad couch-surfing with her, particularly given that she was once at risk of catching a charge when he went on the lam in the first place. (Brittany seems to be getting pretty sick of him too, for different reasons.) But when Palmer tells Amanda that he's come back to town to tie up the last few loose ends that might still leave her in extra-legal danger -- and then he's going to turn himself in -- she agrees to aid and abet him for just a couple of days. What could possibly go wrong? Jane, apparently convinced that Sydney's two days in a mental institution cured whatever had ailed her before, is being extremely kind to her now that she's out, but Sydney's not trying to hear her advice that she stay away from Michael for all their sakes. Jane turns out to be right about Michael, though not for the reason she thinks. She also turns out not to have gotten any better at choosing partners, though the only one who knows that so far is Sydney, on the receiving end of Chris's creepitude. At D&D, Amanda assigns Alison and Billy to the same bridal gown account so that they can both bring all their personal crap to the project and annoy everyone around them; though Alison also makes time to give Jo disastrously terrible advice about Reed's parents' custody case, which Jo, for some reason, follows. MP S03.E03: In-Laws And Outlaws

While doing her best, by day, to convince officials at the mental hospital that she isn't insane and that her claims about Kimberly's guilt in Michael's attempted murder should be taken seriously, Sydney uses a brief moment of unattended time at night to call Matt and beg him to look into Kimberly. And he does! While Jane is at the beach house having Michael sign papers for Chris's deal -- and causing him to remember some of their good times, in the process, to Kimberly's chagrin -- Matt's inside looking for evidence that something's up with Kimberly, which he finds in the form of her backup wig in the bathroom. Will it be enough?! Alison gets back from Wisconsin to find out that...the dude she left at the altar is now working one cubicle away from her. Amanda's forcing them to work together seems calculated to ensure that they will be reminded of what kept them from eloping in the first place. And as the contours of Brittany and Palmer's scheme against Jake reveal themselves, Jo gets an unwelcome visit from two people she never expected to meet: Reed's parents. MP S03.E02: It’s A Bad World After All

With a new detective working on Michael's case, it would probably behoove Sydney to have legal representation other than a public defender, which is why it's a good thing Mr. Andrews (Ken Howard!) has come to town to help the cause. It's less good -- for Sydney, anyway -- that he doesn't really believe her protestations of innocence and is urging her to work with the DA to get her charges reduced. Then he lands on a whole different plan to keep her out of jail that she might like even less. Kimberly seems to have convinced Chambers, the new detective, that she's a completely credible doctor and Sydney is an unstable wacko who tried to use her for an alibi; she's also feeding Michael confusing stories about his past and letting Matt know she would prefer it if he didn't try to stop by and see Michael when she's not there. Alison apparently did convince Meredith -- in another one of those fraught emotional conversations that inconveniently happened offscreen -- to join her in pursuing legal action, which both are doing in Wisconsin despite Meredith's extreme nerves and Mrs. Parker's attempts to interfere. Back in Los Angeles, Amanda convinces Billy to help her with a pitch to get Escapade -- still, somehow, his employer -- to hire D&D as its new ad agency. Does Billy understand the unethical breaches Amanda has led him to commit? Unclear! Brittany is still on Jake's boat, and still horny as hell. But there actually is a reason for both those things. MP S03.E01: I Am Curious, Melrose

When Meredith goes out to pick up dinner and also take a break from Alison haranguing her to process her abusive childhood the way Alison (who only became fully conscious of her own about three days ago) thinks she should, Mr. Parker sneaks into the house, accosts Alison, and starts trying to talk her into returning to Billy so that she can keep up appearances for the sake of the family, as she's always done in the past. Little does he know that Meredith has a gun! And Billy is also there, suddenly, to help, kind of! In the aftermath, Alison wants to talk about pressing charges against Mr. Parker, but Meredith just wants to cut ties, again, and put this unpleasantness behind them. Once they're back in L.A., Billy eventually tells Alison he thinks Meredith is right. But does Alison? Kimberly rushes to Michael's bedside straight from having spent several hours all alone at the USC library, just in time for him to go in for emergency surgery on his cerebral swelling! Sydney gets home to find the complex swarming with cops and realizes Kimberly has followed through on one of her many murder plots -- and that this one implicated Jane! But when she goes to talk to Jane in jail, she finds out Jane suspects Sydney did it! ...Which she might have, if Kimberly hadn't realized Sydney was too skittish and proceeded without her. Anyway, Sydney doesn't have an alibi, Michael doesn't have any memory of his life before waking up after surgery, and Jane doesn't have any reason NOT to throw suspicion on Sydney. Jake pulls an "I choose me" on Amanda and Jo, swearing off relationships, only to get entangled IMMEDIATELY with Brittany (Kathy Ireland!) (?), a woman fleeing a rich, powerful, abusive husband with lots of sketchy connections. MP S02.E31: Till Death Do Us Part

After Sydney gets roughed up by some sex workers for horning in on their turf and ends up in the ER, Kimberly decides that she should also get the chance to take revenge on Michael and enlists her in her planning to, you know, end his life. Sydney may not have quite the stomach for it, but no matter: Kimberly's got enough focus for both of them, even braiding in Jane when the original Mrs. Mancini gets an appealing business offer she needs Michael's sign-off to pursue. It's also Billy and Alison's wedding weekend! Billy's college friend Rob comes to town to serve as Best Man, and when Billy palms him off on Matt for an afternoon, Matt learns just how accurate that title is -- only Billy didn't realize Rob was into guys until before happening to see Matt and Rob kissing in the courtyard. Also coming to town for the nuptials are Alison's parents, but not Meredith, Alison's sister whom we've never heard her mention before, possibly because she left home as soon as she could and basically never came back. HMMMMM. Amanda is all ready to resume kicking ass at D&D now that she's done with Chas, but Chas isn't done with her: he's filed a $10 million sexual harassment suit against her. Hillary's choice to take her fiancé's side over her daughter's leaves Amanda feeling vulnerable -- just like Jo was not so long ago, meaning Jake finds Amanda suddenly irresistible again. MP S02.E30: Devil With The G-String On

Kimberly is basically the perfect fiancée to Michael -- not just reviewing the paperwork from Jane's company and determining that it's sketchy as hell, but also volunteering to go over there and yell at Jane about it; screening an appendectomy patient and getting all the necessary information into his chart before surgery. So then...why in the world would Kimberly conceal that very patient's drug allergy such that it would lead Michael to make a potentially dangerous error in his treatment? Well, probably the same reason that Dr. Levin, who suspects that she did, pretends not to know and proceed with an investigation into Michael's actions that doesn't implicate Kimberly at all: they each have an axe to grind against him. Jo and her pregnancy turn out to be fine after Sarah's boyfriend caused her to fall down the stairs, but other kinds of trouble arise: Amanda is jealous of all the time Jake is spending with Jo (and doesn't care that, as he reminds her, Jo doesn't have anyone else to do it), and Jake is confused by the feelings of tenderness Jo's vulnerable state has revived in him. At the same time, after Amanda firmly informs Chas that the kissing they did in the last episode is not going to escalate, he goes around her to Alison to spin a tale of aggravated sexual harassment. She swears Billy to secrecy before telling him all the gossip, and he manages not to spill -- not while he's sober, anyway! Sydney makes her début at The Body Stocking, performing under the name Jungle Jane, but she may regret having moved so quickly from the lunch shift to prime time when hers happens to be the strip club Michael chooses for Billy's bachelor party. And Sarah really seems to want to befriend Jo, too -- so much so that she makes up a reason to pop by Jo's latest photo shoot just to introduce her boyfriend Hank, newly arrived from Sioux City to protect Sarah from the Gomorrah that is the L.A. fashion world. Jo picks up on a couple more hints that Sarah isn't having a lot of fun with Hank in town before Sarah herself comes pounding on her door, very upset after a fight with him. Jo opens her home for Sarah to stay with her, but her guess that Hank is already on his way back to Iowa proves a little too optimistic. While Kimberly continues running hot and cold in her relationship with Michael, Sydney quickly moves on from trying to reassert her marital claim on him to setting up her escort business at her Melrose Place studio apartment, just in time for Lauren's lawyer finally to spring her from jail! Lauren is ready to settle up, per their arrangement, but she remembers it differently than Sydney does, and now Sydney has a week to come up with the $5000 she suddenly owes her "partner." With no one left to lend it to her and no chance to earn it back in Lauren's stable, Sydney looks for another line of work where an attractive woman can make a lot of cash quickly (no typing test required). After Hillary hoodwinks Amanda into hiring Chas for the new junior account executive vacancy at D&D, Alison is annoyed to find out not only that Chas got the job through nepotism, and that he apparently has no intention of doing any of the tasks in his job description lest they interfere with glad-handing Bruce, but also that he gets paid more than Alison herself does for what is supposed to be the same job. Let a couple of imperfect commentators take you through a discussion of "Imperfect Strangers"! MP S02.E28: The Bitch Is Back

After a minimal amount of lurking about just far enough away to make Michael doubt what he's actually seeing, Kimberly enters the beach house and gets close enough to let Michael touch her and know that, yes, she's really there, and really alive; her mother just lied to him to try to get him out of Kimberly's life, but now Kimberly's all better and ready to pick back up like the past five months never happened! When Michael sheepishly confesses that, during that time, he married Sydney (though not specifically why), she orders him to get out of it, and since Kimberly's return means Sydney's blackmail material is worthless, it's pretty easy! Michael gloats about how great it is to put one over on their enemies, and maybe Kimberly would join him if she wasn't still having so many terrible headaches.... Jo's happy to be working with an adorable young model named Sarah, until Amanda shows up at the shoot and fires her on the spot. D&D NEVER works with ANYone from Sarah's agency! Only after the head of the agency calls Bruce to chew him out and demand an apology from Amanda to we find out what her problem is with Models Inc.: said agency head is Hillary Michaels, the mother who left Amanda and her father when Amanda was a child. Now that they've reconnected, Hillary desperately wants to try to have a relationship with Amanda again; Amanda's not so sure. Since Alison's parents won't be around until right before the wedding, they want to help by paying for a local wedding planner. Too bad Sheila is bossy and abrasive -- and not in the way where we'd enjoy seeing Billy (or "William," as she insists on calling him) and Alison victimized by her. MP S02.E27: Psycho-Therapy

With Sydney settling into her work managing Lauren's call girl business, Michael can't help getting curious about her little black book, and very quickly finds useful information in it: it seems Dr. Levin, his antagonist at the hospital, is a client! Since Michael isn't going to be able to advance on the traditional path of doing reliably good work, he opts for blackmail instead. Everything in his life sure is falling into place! No further drama on the horizon for him, probably! It's starting to be a problem for Alison, and the therapeutic process, that Dr. Miller is exactly her type. Even Billy knows it's worrisome not only that Alison kept her therapy a secret from him, but that (as Amanda reports) Dr. Miller is casual enough to have "sessions" over seafood lunch at the marina. He confronts Dr. Miller about hitting on Alison, which Dr. Miller denies he is doing; then Alison confronts him about not hitting on her? Eep. Both Amanda and Jo notice weird clunking noises at Amanda's place, though when they investigate the apparent source -- the vacant apartment next door -- they don't find anything; that's because Peeping Ted has moved on from the hole behind Amanda's shower to the attic above her bedroom. However, his horniess apparently makes him careless, and he can't escape discovery forever. Find a comfortable position (mood stabilizers optional) and join us for our podcast on "Psycho-Therapy"! MP S02.E26: In Bed With The Enemy

Jane is pretty much screwed, financially -- so much so that she tries going to Amanda for a loan. Amanda doesn't even pretend to consider it, instead offering to introduce Jane to someone who might be willing to park his money in her company. Then she goes to Michael: if he puts his half of the inheritance into Jane's company, they'll both save on legal fees, he'll probably make money when she's a big success (snort), and while a court case would drive them apart, being in business will inevitably pull them closer together. Jane is horrified to be ambushed by the sight of Michael at lunch with her investor, but has to admit that Amanda's scheme makes sense. Sydney, however, is jealous as hell that Michael's once again entangled with Jane and her talent, so Lauren's arrest for pandering comes along at just the right time: Sydney visits her in jail to arrange to take over her business while Lauren's locked up, and prove to Michael that she has talents of her own. Alison first admits to Billy that she never wants to have children, and then confides that she's been having nightmares so upsetting that she wants to seek psychiatric help. Billy is, unsurprisingly, dubious about it, so she goes behind his back and immediately starts experiencing transference with her therapist. Now that Jake has a job and can't be Amanda's on-call fix-it man anymore, he recommends that she hire one, and in a wildly out-of-character move, she hires some dude who's an hour late for their interview and shows up without a résumé? Guess what? He's a creep. Lay your head down on your pillow -- preferably next to someone you like -- and listen to our podcast on "In Bed With The Enemy"! MP S02.E25: The Two Mrs. Mancinis

When Jane and Sydney's grandmother dies and Sydney claims not to care because she always loved Jane more, Jane feels appalled. Then Jane finds out their grandmother is leaving her a six-figure bequest and Sydney nothing, and feels guilty. Then Jane hears that, actually, Gram never changed her will after the divorce, so the cash has been willed to Dr. and Mrs. Michael and Jane Mancini, and feels horrified...because she already quit her job with Kay and rented commercial space to start her own design business. Whoops! Billy is hurt when he finds out that Alison is planning to go back to Wisconsin for her father's 50th birthday party without him, and even more hurt when he hears that no one's going to wonder where her fiancé is at this major life event because no one back home actually knows she's engaged. He then buys his own plane ticket behind her back, invites himself along, and ignores her twice-stated wishes that he not upstage her father on his special day by announcing their engagement and does precisely that, mostly in order not to get cucked by an ex that her oblivious parents keep inviting around because as far as they know Billy is just Alison's roommate. The longer Alison spends in her childhood home, though, the less bothered she is by Billy's heedless cloddishness, and the more haunted she seems to be by dark memories. On her latest D&D shoot, Jo meets a model, Gregory, who hits on her hard, RIGHT up until he finds out why she's sticking to club soda on their date. MP S02.E24: Love, Mancini Style

After Michael's ominous parting line to him at the end of the last episode, Matt is pretty sure Michael is taking Sydney up north to murder her, and as we know, he's not actually wrong. He's just going to have a hard time (a) tracking them down to the resort in the High Sierras that they happen to be staying in, and (b) convincing law enforcement that these newlyweds are out of sight for reasons other than that they're having tons of sex. Michael makes a couple of attempts on Sydney's life before Matt gets to the right cabin with the cavalry, but did he make it in time?! As Jo's pregnancy progresses, she is increasingly haunted by visions of Reed, in both her sleeping and waking hours. (Reed is also on Jake's mind, as he attends the police auction where the Pretty Lady is sold with designs on convincing the winning bidder to let him use the vessel for a charter business, just like Reed told Jake he was planning to do.) Jake convinces Jo that she won't have peace until she gets closure on Reed, or whatever spectral version of him remains. When she's not helping Jo find Reed's barely marked grave, Alison whines about Billy's refusal to participate in planning their wedding and general lack of romantic effort since locking her down with his proposal. To reignite the spark, Alison hits upon a scheme guaranteed to make Billy irritable, and he's probably not the only one. Freer than the land of the free, it's our podcast on "Love, Mancini Style"! MP S02.E23: Otherwise Engaged

After informing Michael that she's going to use her knowledge of his part in Kimberly's death to force him into marrying her, no one is happy about it -- not Jane; not Sydney and Jane's mother, who flies in from Chicago after Jane tells her about the nuptials to try to talk Sydney out of it; and certainly not Michael himself, though he likes the idea of losing his medical license and possibly his freedom (due to incarceration) even less. So: it happens. But then the answer to Michael's problems comes to him in a dream. Jo is woozy and nauseated on the set of a photo shoot, but it's not, as her assistant suggests, the flu that's been going around: she's pregnant with the late Reed's baby. Under duress, she tells Jake what's going on and that she's not interested in remaining pregnant with her dead criminal boyfriend's baby, but the clinic tells her she has to think about it for 24 hours and she's a woman on Fox in the '90s, so...she does. Helping Jo through the crisis gets Jake out of an engagement celebration for Alison and Billy with D&D boss Bruce and his wife that Amanda invited herself along to in the course of a very efficient conversation in which she also leveled extremely justified criticism at Alison's disgusting engagement ring. Does Billy have to get Alison a ring from a recognized retailer, and with a four-figure price tag, just because it's tradition? Clear your schedule for our podcast on "Otherwise Engaged"! MP S02.E22: With This Ball And Chain

After ending up in jail following her arrest on Reed's boat (or was it?), Jo's next challenge is convincing her public defender that she killed Reed in self-defense and had no involvement in his drug business. He (a) doesn't believe her, and (b) is apparently in some degree of cahoots with the DA to get a threatened first-degree murder charge pled down so that Jo's case will just get off his schedule and he can move on to inadequately defending his other clients. Jo uses her one phone call to reach Jake, who rallies the neighbours to her aid, but what she really needs is a decent lawyer; the only one who could find or afford such a person is Amanda, and she's in deep CYA mode given her own entanglement with Reed. Is Jo going to serve hard time?! After sleeping on it and then going to work for half a day, Alison has given Billy's marriage proposal enough thought to accept. Billy tells Amanda that in order for there not to be any secrets between him and his intended, he's going to tell her about hooking up with Amanda. Horrified, Amanda orders him not to, and then gets in front of it by telling Jake before Billy has the chance to say anything. The fallout is...unexpected? Sydney continues burrowing into Michael's life: telling Jane about moving in with him; acquiring and donning a series of extremely Republican outfits; interceding on his behalf at work; and charging a bunch of furniture on his purloined credit card. How far is she willing to go with this gambit? Say "I do!" to our podcast on "With This Ball And Chain" and find out! MP S02.E21: Swept Away

Reed understands why Jo is frustrated, having been stuck in the hold of his stupid boat for the better part of a day without food, water, much air, or a toilet. But she's just going to have to stay down there until his drug business is concluded -- and honestly it's her own fault for having looked into said business in the first place. Once he's sprung her, he goes to work convincing her that she'll be happier on the run with him than back in her dull, safe L.A. life, and maybe saved a little of his supply for his own use because she manages to get out of his eyeline a couple of times. Will Reed convince Jo to sign on for (yo ho, yo ho) a pirate's life? Alison, having figured out she was wildly overreacted to the scene at Billy's, remained in New York to talk it out with him. Agreeing that long-distance relationships suck and getting him to bone her apparently convince him that she wants him to surprise her by arranging for all her stuff to be moved to his place in New York. This proves to be an egregious miscalculation, and not his last for the episode. Sydney continues pressing her advantage with Michael, letting him know she's collected actual eyewitness evidence of his drinking on the night of the car accident and trolling him at work by sneaking into the lounge to put newspaper clippings about drunk driving accidents on the cork board. Her needling culminates in her showing up at the beach house with several suitcases and announcing that she's moving in. Michael responds with some threats and rough sex, but guess what? That's probably what she would have done to him if he hadn't started it, so it doesn't exactly scare her off. Let us sweep you away with our latest podcast, all about "Swept Away"! MP S02.E20: Parting Glances

The merry partners are all ready to get down to some seafaring except, whoops, Reed announces that he had to cancel the one charter they had booked without giving anyone any notice, and he doesn't seem to be that interested in rescheduling it, or lining up any more business. Jake and Amanda's attempt to get him on track just ends in Amanda demanding her money back. Meanwhile, Jo discovers the secret trap door, and though she initially accepts Reed's explanation that it's to save him lugging valuables on and off, it's on her mind when Jake warns her that, according to the state of California, Reed's boat officially does not exist. Will Jo survive her own curiosity? Billy and Alison's attempts to make a long-distance relationship work are hampered by Billy's horny new co-worker, who's apparently determined to set Billy up with someone immediately and won't take "I have a girlfriend" for an answer. Out of his mind recovering in the hospital, a delirious Michael starts babbling some incriminating remarks about blood alcohol this and Matt that -- unfortunately, within Sydney's hearing. Matt and Michael aren't sure what she's going to do with this information, but they're not thrilled she has it. And as Matt continues trying to understand what it's like to work under Don't Ask Don't Tell, he encourages Jeffrey to live his truth, with unintended consequences. MP S02.E19: The Young Men And The Sea

Remember how Amanda thought Reed was a creep and Jake thought he was a con artist? Apparently they don't, because Jake has no problem fixing the engine of a boat Reed totally does not own, for free, as a favour to Jo, and considering coming in with him 60/40 in a partnership, as his full-time mechanic. To get Jake hooked on the seafaring life, Reed invites him and Amanda out on a harbor cruise, which apparently sparks all of Amanda's happy memories of boating in her youth; no sooner has Jo volunteered to stake Reed the collateral he needs to buy the boat than Amanda is slagging her off and throwing her money at Reed. Between her misgivings about getting into business with Amanda and her suspicions about what might be in a suitcase full of valuables Reed has asked her to store, Jo has a lot on her mind! Michael is living at the beach house again, but all his focus -- such as it is; he's taking a lot of painkillers, so his vision's probably pretty blurry -- is on convincing Jane to take him back. Sydney joins Jane in securing a restraining order against him, but it's only so that it's easier for Sydney to try to worm her way back into his affections if he legally has no other options. Michael, of course, is only interested in using her, and in the short term, she's a handy go-between for a fraudulent new painkiller prescription when he can't get a legitimate refill for himself. Billy finally breaks the news of his promotion to Alison, and is much less confident than she is that a long-distance relationship can work for them. And while Jeffrey makes it clear to Matt that he doesn't tend to date anyone long enough for it to impinge on his career, Matt starts to realize he may not be happy getting into Jeffrey's closet with him.
