Returning to the Dominican Republic to expedite her divorce from Kyle only reminds Amanda of how romantic her last trip there was, when she and Kyle were falling in love. Meanwhile, whatever scheme Rory has cooking seems to have sped up his timeline, so the smooth-talking gigolo routine needs to go into overdrive, too. Back in L.A., Kyle enlists Jennifer in his campaign to push Taylor into confessing her big secret about Christine, while Michael advises her against it. Michael, at least, seems to have given up his campaign to reunite with his ex, and spends every scene with Megan verbally abusing her while Coop looks increasingly constipated about it. Peter returns to Lexi seeming to have finally noticed what the rest of us have known all along: she's boring and she sucks. Coop is still boring us all with talk of his big job in Philadelphia, and while Megan is still strongly considering joining him if he gets it, there's a problem: the head of the search committee is coming to town, and the restaurant where he wants to meet Coop and Megan happens to be in the hotel where Megan formerly worked. While this is weighing on Megan, her worst friend Jennifer pressures her to be more considerate of Michael, whose clinic is so deep in debt that he is openly considering burning it down for the insurance money. Coop's ex, meanwhile, runs into Rory, and old friend from Cleveland; once she finds out he's divorced, she immediately decides to set him up with Amanda, all the better to keep her away from Peter. Amanda really must be off her game, because she can't immediately clock Rory as a bounder. Kyle goes to Dallas to try to get more clues about what Nick was doing in L.A., and he does when his ex-landlady reveals that Taylor came to see him. Taylor tells Michael she thinks she's still concussed because she feels dizzy all the time; Michael's not a great doctor, but he does know all the tests that one should order for someone in Taylor's situation. The infidelity plot is MOSTLY just treading water, except that Jennifer tells Billy she loves him, and Jeff wants to introduce Sam to his whole family. Christine is still dead. Nick is still gone. And yet we're still hearing a lot about both of them. Amanda is so racked with guilt that she's taking it out on Kyle, whose attempts to bridge the gap between them all come out very hostile. Then Kyle gets a letter from Nick informing him that Taylor's dead, which she proves she is not by walking into the scene seconds later, but it still sends Kyle on an investigative journey into whom Christine had contact with in her last days, and why. Both the remaining blond doctors are annoying the (annoying) women in their lives with unilateral decisions about their living arrangements: Coop is up for a job in Philadelphia and assumes Megan will be overjoyed to move there with him if he gets it; Peter, having been back with Lexi for one date, buys her a condo on the marina. Michael and his clinic continue their downward spiral, though at least he has regular gossip updates from Taylor to distract him. Speaking of gossip, Megan happens to be leaving the complex just in time for Billy and Jennifer to return from their dalliance at the hotel; Jennifer tells her everything EXCEPT that Sam is also having an affair. Speaking of whom: it's all going great in San Diego until Jeff starts pressuring Sam to leave Billy and marry him, and though this scares Sam enough to really pour it on with Billy when she comes back to town, he both sees through her and is still extremely horny for Jennifer. Having accidentally killed Christine in the last episode, Nick springs into action with a cunning plan, and drags Taylor along: they're going to call a suicide note in to Amanda at the hotel where she and Kyle are staying on their wedding night, then leave Christine on the tracks so that her corpse will be obliterated past the point where any physical evidence of Nick's actions can be determined. And it works, particularly as regards Taylor's agenda in the larger plan, because Amanda tries to conceal the suicide message from Kyle, then blames herself for her seeming part in Christine's death. And Kyle is so determined to get her past it that he even enlists Peter to convince Amanda that she's innocent before eventually deciding he agrees with her, actually. But the two surviving co-conspirators can't help turning on each other. Billy and Sam continue boring us all with their infidelity, though their respective co-cheaters do escalate their interest (but just a little -- the season's still got four more episodes to go!). Megan, Michael, Coop, and Lexi are also all in the episode, but if the producers don't care to bring them in sooner than three-quarters of the way through, and they're lucky we're mentioning them here at all. Christine -- or should we say "Christine"? -- is ready to pull the plug on Operation Reset Kyle's Life, but Taylor and Nick have invested too much in it and simply will not allow that to happen. The next phase involves "Christine" confessing suicidal ideation to Peter so that he'll (a) commit her on a psych hold and (b) use all her professions of love to his own advantage with Amanda by telling Kyle and pushing him and Christine together. Unfortunately, Peter does only the first thing and very much not the second; in fact, he basically orders Kyle to leave Christine alone and marry Amanda as fast as he can -- which just requires Taylor to escalate the situation further. Here's what's not really escalating: anything between Billy and Sam OR the people who have crushes on them. Sam panics after sex with Jeff and tells him it absolutely cannot happen again. But Jeff is ready to throw away his whole career for her! Until she tells him not to and then he doesn't! Jennifer, meanwhile, continues mooning around Billy AND broom-dancing in her apartment, but none of that keeps her so busy that she can't get a mid-episode bob for no reason. And while Coop tries to get Lexi out of town, Megan helps Michael deal with an unexpected windfall. So the last episode showed us that Christine was definitely alive; definitely wrote that letter years ago that Taylor apparently forgot about and had to go to Dallas to have Nick explain; and definitely was really injured in the war, she's also in cahoots with Nick, against Kyle. In this one, we're told that although money is apparently involved, and Christine doesn't feel great about her part in it, and this is also kind of a plan FOR Kyle, in the sense of rekindling his friendship with Nick? But other than that there is a plan, we don't know what it is, except that it involves Christine acting like she really needs a lot of attention from Kyle and is still constantly thinking about suicide -- and, honestly, how much acting is involved is an open question. As A plots go, we've had better! Moving on: Lexi has moved out of Peter's place, and (chastely) in with Coop. Megan is upset that Coop could throw her over so easily, so she heads straight back to Michael, and damn the danger of seeing him at the clinic. Peter, meanwhile, is upset that he's still being blamed for Thomas's death, and for some reason thinks Coop will help exonerate him. The time has come for a midseason two-parter, and new characters are popping off. Having mooched some extra ER shifts from Peter, Michael meets a shady gentleman (how shady? His name is Spider), who encourages Michael to revive the shuttered medical clinic in his neighborhood. Much as we were expected to believe that Michael doesn't know how strip clubs work, we're also expected to believe he doesn't understand the quid pro quo implied. Meanwhile, with Mrs. Mancini still in town, Jennifer has to keep asking Billy to pose as Craig -- and since Sam is still head over heels for Jeff, she has no problem giving Billy permission to do it and leave her alone, basically. And after Lexi's father Thomas suffers a health emergency in the middle of a conversation with Peter, Michael's ex-wife, Megan, stumbles secret knowledge about it that she wishes she never had. Mancinis: drama magnets! When Kyle and Christine have an awkward reunion that immediately resurrects Angry Kyle, Christine enlists Amanda to help her smooth things over. We join Jennifer just as she's absorbing horrifying news: Mia Mancini, mother to Jennifer and Michael, is coming for a visit -- just as her children's lives are falling apart! Michael has to do some fancy footwork to explain why he doesn't want to bring Mia to his office, but it works, and when Mia mistakes Billy for Craig, Jennifer just decides to run with it! Billy is more willing to play along than he might otherwise be since Sam is preoccupied: landing Jeff Baylor means committing to have her run his campaign, and although Jeff knows she's married, he maaaaaybe doesn't care, and maybe Sam doesn't either what with Billy being such a jerk to her all the time. Taylor guides Amanda to finding out more information about Christine, but slightly overplays her hand by telling Amanda things only Nick knew, which Amanda then repeats to Kyle. But everything changes when Kyle very belatedly receives a letter Christine wrote him years ago. Thomas only has one scene, but he makes it count: Sterling Conway Enterprises has acquired either GloveCo or its heart valve division, meaning Lexi and Coop are going to be partners again! Once again, the medical practice is a flashpoint for drama. Peter can plainly tell that Lexi's father Thomas has no respect for him, because Thomas is not even pretending to hide it. (It's not like we can really say Thomas is WRONG to think Peter is bad news for his daughter, but since he much prefers Coop for her, it's not like his judgment is perfect.) Coop is keeping a close eye on Michael and Amber, noting their cohabitation and making sure Amber gets invited to a big reception the practice is throwing to impress a bunch of "hospital bigwigs." Once there, Coop doesn't let her champagne glass empty, and though the consequences are predictable, we must ALSO say that Coop had nothing to do with Amber showing up in what would be quite brief even as a nightgown, plus also braless; Michael did THAT to her/himself. Amanda's recovery takes a sudden turn for the better, just in time for Taylor to track Nick down in Dallas, break into his apartment, talk up the jazz club, and get the full story of Christine the Marine. Dr. Mosley returns to tell Jennifer all about the dangerous moves Craig is making with GloveCo's new heart valve; and the ad agency's potential new client makes Billy and Sam run down a minor league baseball prospect who's philosophically opposed to endorsements. Our A plot is a good old doctor roundup! Michael is using all his romantic tricks to lock down Amber; when she resists, he (rudely) assumes it's because she's embarrassed about her job and what his friends (who) will think of her, and (annoyingly) the show doesn't let her tell him she's rejecting him for any number of other very good reasons. When Megan dribbles some baloney about never having really dated, Coop suggests that they start their relationship over in a "courtship" mode. Bob, having recovered his memories about the night of the hit-and-run, confronts Peter with a blackmail threat, but he doesn't want money: he wants Peter to break up with Lexi so that Bob can have her for himself. (Billy, Sam, and Jennifer also stop by for one scene, presumably for contractual reasons.) Since Amanda is still paralyzed, Taylor starts looking for ways she can use the situation to her advantage with Kyle, spying on him when he goes looking through his old foot locker. When Taylor actually talks to Amanda, they compare notes on Kyle's Desert Storm nightmares: he's just started having them in Amanda's room, calling out the name "Christine," which is new data for Taylor. But when she snoops around Kyle's things and finds a photo of him with Nick and Christine labeled "The Three Musketeers," she gets an idea. Amanda and Sam's crash site still hasn't been found, and Kyle is DETERMINED to locate it NO MATTER WHAT and REGARDLESS of whose actually experienced toes he steps on!!! (Billy is also there, kind of circling Kyle and yapping like that little dog in the old Looney Tunes cartoon.) Anyway -- spoiler? -- the ladies are located and treated for their injuries, and it turns out Amanda wasn't just whining about her back: it is seriously injured, to the degree that she may be paralyzed. (Or just have to stay in bed for a while because of Heather Locklear's pregnancy.) While Sam is still recovering -- and totally convinced by Billy's version of Connie's snitching about their kiss -- Billy urges Connie to go see her, promising he didn't tell her anything about...you know. GloveCo is thriving, but Coop still wants to get rid of Michael; soft-hearted and/or stupid Megan just wants him to ignore Michael instead. While Peter is occupied by Amanda's treatment, Lexi lavishes her attention onto Bob, in a decision she almost immediately regrets, and will probably rue even more very soon. What's that behind you? The GloveCo lawsuit is behind us...sort of: Michael is so bitter about having been cut out of the business for the obvious reasons that he uses his Chief of Staff position to forbid the glove's use in surgery by ANY hospital personnel. Coop hatches a plan to strip Michael of this authority, but it's going to require that Michael believe a woman who hates him also wants to bone. Hmmm, could it possibly work?! We've said a lot of hurtful things about Coop, because he is a bad character and we have assessed him accurately. But one of the smartest things we've ever seen him do is try to get Craig on his side in the glove lawsuit by showing him the hard evidence that proves Coop really did come up with the idea first. When Jennifer is present for Craig's deposition, where he truthfully testifies about it, she confronts Michael about what he may have gotten her into; Michael has her on side, but he's going to have to do some fancy footwork to keep her there, which will be hard now that his attention is split between that and obsessing about Megan and Coop's burgeoning relationship. Peter returns to the scene of Lexi's hit-and-run and finds the victim, an unhoused person named Bob. Though he tries to keep Lexi from finding out what she did, even she is able to put the pieces together when the cops show up and tell her about the person Peter saved after some scofflaw ran him over. Amanda continues to be distressed about Kyle, and Taylor continues to be a brat about it. Peter confronts Lexi about the pills he found in her purse, which he went ahead and asked Coop about behind her back, and guess what: she feels betrayed! Fortunately, she's easily distracted by the project of redecorating not just the condo, but the offices of the Mancini Glove Company, too. Décor is the least of Michael's concerns: he's busy trying to convince Megan that she's extremely frail, and also that he was the one who kept a vigil during her coma, both of which require that he keep Coop far away from Megan. Meanwhile, Jennifer's loose lips give Coop yet another front from which to attack Michael. Amanda continues trying to convince Kyle that she wasn't dishonest with him about Eric (even though...lady, come on). But now that Taylor's crept one step closer to reuniting with Kyle for more than a twenty-minute stand, she's got a new project: convincing Kyle to let Amanda sell her share in the jazz club. Once again, the doctors are in disarray! When Peter bails Coop out of jail, Michael turns on both of them, convinced that even if Coop didn't physically pull the trigger at the beach house, he's behind the person who did. Michael's so fired up about finding the shooter that even Megan gets curious enough to join in the investigation. Coop himself is pretty shocked when Mrs. Shaw accosts him outside his apartment, and quickly figures out she's the culprit; since his was not his endgame with Michael, he informs her that he's going to send her back to Cleveland and have her check herself into a mental institution. PROBLEM SOLVED. At the same time, Peter -- a medical doctor -- can tell Lexi isn't quite herself, but not that she's pretty obviously going into withdrawal after running through the last of her tranquilizers. Jennifer is inspired by Billy and Sam's engagement to try to corner Craig into committing to dating her, and won't take "my wife was killed in front of me nine episodes ago so I'm not really ready" for an answer. While Amanda keeps the secret of Eric's designs against Kyle's entire hospitality empire, Eric completes his purchase of the KYLE'S/jazz club property, giving Kyle 30 days to exit. And that's not all: he's ALSO planning to sell Amanda's new agency to one of her competitors. However, he doesn't leave Amanda without hope: he will abandon all his plots if she will just do oooooooone little thing. Michael is still being harassed by either Kimberly or someone working very hard to convince him that they're her. Michael accuses virtually everyone in his life of being the culprit -- though not Craig and Jennifer, since his main complaint about them at the moment is that they're not giving him enough adulation at the newly formed medical device company. Peter is happy to use Michael's crazy-sounding stories against him in order to get his Chief of Staff job back, but otherwise his life is going pretty great. He can even openly date Lexi now, and enjoy total honesty in their relationship, because she has nothing to hide! The main drama swirls around the doctors this time: Michael's already had a prototype cauterizing glove made and is ready to start making money off it immediately by selling it to a medical company; Craig wants to use it to build a company himself, which will make him and both Mancini siblings money in the long term. When Jennifer sees that Michael's stubbornness is going to drive Craig away (from her), she engages in a little espionage to force Craig and Michael into an arranged marriage, business-wise. Though Coop does find out about some of this eventually, it can't be top of mind: he's found out that Lexi got his real books, he knows he's about to get screwed in their divorce settlement, and he wants to know who's to blame. And she's not the only woman in the episode who's giving him trouble. Kyle, continuing to stew (no pun intended) over the loss of KYLE'S East, asks Amanda why she told Eric about it. She says she didn't, which only makes Kyle more suspicious about how Eric found out, particularly after he and Taylor are notified that they also just lost their lease on KYLE'S West, because someone bought the property; Taylor used her feminine wiles to find out that the buyer is a certain Upper West Holding Company, and wouldn't you know it, that's who bought KYLE'S East too. They decide to stake out a restaurant and try to get more info on who their landlord's been dealing with…which unfortunately happens to be the same place Amanda's meeting Eric and Megan, and she totally spots them sneaking out the back and assumes they were there together for romantic reasons. In other Eric news: Megan asks if he will teach her how to business, and since he thinks he can use her to make Amanda jealous, he accepts. Finally: Billy and Sam show up for one scene so he can give her an engagement ring and get her shirt off in his office. Michael is the pivot point for virtually everyone in the A plot. He helps Taylor cover up her non-pregnancy after a fortuitous fall down the jazz club's eponymous stairs. He hassles Megan so much that he drives her into Eric's arms. He takes an idle conversation with Coop about surgical tools and turns it into a proposal to develop a new device AND lets Jennifer pitch him on tricking Craig into backing it with Sydney's insurance money instead of blowing it on a cruise. But Michael's not the only one screwing Coop over: Peter is so fired up with love for Lexi that he takes it upon himself to steal Coop's financial records in order to assist her in her divorce machinations. Billy finally decides to listen to Sam the 400th time she tells him to depart Maryland and leave her alone, but his goodbye convinces her that she doesn't belong there either, and she comes home to (a) reunite with him and (b) interview for the graphic artist job he's trying to fill at Amanda's new agency. Still reeling from Sam’s shock departure at the end of the last episode, Billy takes time off from The AWA at the worst possible time to follow a hunch and locate her in Maryland, working at her mother Kate’s restaurant. Though Kate’s longtime employee Ernie seems kindly disposed toward Billy, he admits that Kate still feels guilty about mistakes she made in Sam’s childhood (edging us ever closer to confirmation that Jim sexually abused Sam), and may be overcompensating in her protectiveness of Sam now. Counterpoint to Ernie: it’s Billy. At the same time, Sydney’s father has come to L.A. to see Craig. He’s about to hand off something too significant to mail when a heedless Jennifer flounces out in her underwear and one of Craig’s shirts and Mr. Andrews decides maybe he never needs to see Craig again, actually. Can Jennifer smooth things over with her former distant in-law? As for everyone else: it’s just one romance crisis after another. Kyle is jealous of Amanda’s relationship with Eric, and only grows more so when Eric shows up in Los Angeles unannounced. The organizers of a medical conference in Santa Barbara had NO IDEA their event was going to be a flashpoint for so much drama! First, Coop tries to get Michael to go and gets turned down flat. Then Megan tries to get Michael to agree to more therapy, so he claims he has to go to this conference and absolutely cannot get out of it! Then Coop tells Lexi he's not going to be able to see her when she comes to L.A., because he's going to, guess what, this conference. So when she says she'll just track him down there, he gets Peter to go in his place. Michael is delighted to hear that his wife has come to the hotel to surprise him...until he sees that it's actually Taylor, still looking for him to knock her up -- which is why things get complicated when his actual wife actually ALSO comes to surprise him, but Taylor will not let Megan interrupt their procreative schedule! At the same time, Peter happens to meet a gorgeous redhead who's loitering around the hotel seeming frustrated.... In Los Angeles, Amanda and Billy's business business business business plans are still going great, while Craig is scrambling to reassure the financiers he suddenly has that everything is okay. Jennifer makes Kyle feel guilty by association that Amanda is busting out Craig's business, so Kyle turns right around and makes Amanda feel so guilty that she actually offers him a job. Meanwhile, a manic Sam confesses to Billy that she was the one who leaked sensitive business (business business business) intel to Craig. Coop has not only taken Michael up on his invitation to join the medical practice -- he brings in a contractor to start talking about knocking down walls before he's even met Peter! Who by the way isn't thrilled to have this development sprung on him. Michael has MANY problems other than his business partner's rage: Megan gets him to enter couples' therapy, where they are challenged not to lie to each other for 48 whole hours. And: Taylor's plan to get artificially inseminated goes off the rails due to a problem at the sperm bank. Wherever will she find more sperm before she's done ovulating?! For obvious reasons, Amanda is trying to void the lease that Taylor signed with Matt; for equally obvious reasons, she's annoyed that Kyle doesn't seem to care where Taylor lives or what she does. Then Amanda overhears Peter yelling at Taylor about her pregnancy, and tells Kyle about it. And when Kyle asks Taylor about it, she says that not only is it true...but that Kyle must be the father because Peter is sterile. Obviously, Peter is not thrilled that this rumor about him is going around the complex, until Taylor tells him that they can use this lie to break up Kyle and Amanda and reunite with their original partners. Coop has arranged for his extremely offscreen fancy surgeon friend to operate on Michael's hands; Jennifer uses this potentially dangerous moment in Michael's life to manipulate Megan into spending time with him again. It's lucky for Coop that everyone's too self-involved to notice how much attention he is paying to everything anyone says about Michael in his presence. Craig is still raw from the loss of Sydney, though not so raw that he isn't still going to the office of his new fake company to half-ass his job. Not even Jennifer's grief-inspired sexual surrogacy can get him back on track, so -- mere days after they all left and collapsed D&D -- Amanda's former employees would like her to perform a hostile takeover of Sky High and hire them all back, please. Though being a bitch queen has generally worked out for Amanda, her run may be at an end: Craig and Sydney are conspiring to bring down D&D from within, and her desperate attempt to get back the capital she poured into the jazz club fails when Kyle has to tell her he spent it on tables and bands and napkins and stuff. It's more than she can take -- literally (in a physical sense). And D&D is not the only Melrose Place business going through changes: Jake has sold Shooters to an entirely offscreen buyer, but Alison doesn't seem too excited about starting her new life in Ojai: she picks a fight about putting her dreams on hold for his, races back to L.A., "forgets" she has important real estate papers in her car and asks Colleen to bring them up to Jake. She couldn't push the two former partners closer together if she tried! (...Hmmmm.) Michael and Taylor's scheme against Peter kicks into its final phase, only to risk blowback when this physician seeks a second opinion on his surgeon partner's neurological diagnosis, then yells about it in front of said partner's chump wife. Sam and Billy continue clashing over Jim's place in their lives, but Billy ultimately sides with the cops and against the prospect of doing any jail time. Amanda's apparently terrible travel agent booked them in a resort that has had its one road washed out during the rainy season, so they're going to have to stay in a VERY rustic beach shack arranged by a random cab driver Kyle meets at the airport! Roughing it eventually brings out the best in Amanda, and the two get closer commiserating, some more, about the end of their marriages. But can it last, given Kyle's current house guest? Jennifer also witnesses Michael and Taylor scheming to trick Peter into thinking he has rage epilepsy and is physically abusing Taylor during blackouts; Taylor excitedly plants a big kiss on Michael to seal their evil deal, which Jennifer is delighted to report to Megan later. The cops release Billy and Sam, continuing to surveil them in a way that does not involve watching the back of their apartment, which Jim uses to enter and demand $10,000 and a ticket to Mexico, or else he'll tell the cops they were in on his whole plan. If you worried that we might not hear about the jazz club this time, don't! Amanda has decided she needs to formalize her partnership with Kyle, and he eventually agrees -- as long as there's no chance Peter is going to weasel his way in. Amanda is on the same page, but regarding Taylor, so a summit is arranged at which the matter of these two lingering divorces is finally addressed. Taylor is pretty eager to sign any paperwork Kyle puts in front of her considering that Peter is still being controlling about her full-on Beth impersonation, but Michael is still hanging around, looking to turn Taylor's building resentment against Peter, to Michael's advantage. Meanwhile, Craig is still pursuing his campaign to make Sydney horny enough to drop her lawsuit; it's too bad she's not the only one he should be trying to manipulate. Former fiancés Billy and Alison are not having a great time: Billy the idiot lets Sam convince him not to call the cops on Jim immediately; and Alison learns that being on your best behavior as a potential adoptive parent means you don't get any nights off to get hammered. Sydney's not thrilled that the grift she and Harry ran on D&D has resulted in actual injury for her. She is thrilled that he thinks they can take the agency for $5 million. Amanda's not worried about the lawsuit since this is exactly why they have insurance, but whoops, it turns out their policy renewal required some exclusions: of course the rickety stairs to the Business Balcony were among them, and of course Craig never got around to fixing them. But it's fine because he knows how to solve this problem: he'll just seduce Sydney so she drops the suit! Hey, I have a great icebreaker about one thing they have in common: carelessness with their insurance policies. Amanda can't concern herself too much with this, because she's got Kyle to hang out with AS FRIENDS. Just friends on the dance floor, talking about their dreams! That's a much more pleasant topic for her than a disastrous job interview she's just conducted with one Jennifer Mancini -- yes, Michael's younger sister, who's just shown up in L.A. to start a new life, but not in advertising. When Sam warns her father that the feds are on to him, he declines her suggestion that he turn himself in; instead, he sneaks out to a motel, Sam lies to Billy that he went to Chicago, and then easily gets $500 out of him to pass on to Jim to finance his vague plans of fleeing the country. Matt and Denise are still wrangling over Chelsea, and Jake still has one very special ex: Colleen is in town to ask for his help with David, and to make things weird for Alison. Having lost everything thanks to Hilda's scam lawsuit, Sydney still doesn't want to accept Hilda's lawyer's offer to become his new partner in financial crime, but it's hard to deny they make a good team when they grift $2000 off another driver in well under two minutes flat. So she seeks a job waiting tables at Kyle's, which he's happy to give her as soon as he confirms it's really going to bug Taylor. But how long will Sydney hold out against Harry's attractive pitch -- particularly once she realizes she could use their combined skills against Amanda, her main rival for Kyle's affections? The aforementioned Taylor has problems outside the restaurant, too, as Peter keeps buying her dowdy clothes; when Kyle returns Peter and Beth's wedding album to her, she finally figures out exactly why Peter's giving her this extreme makeover. Sydney's not the only one hitting up a neighbor for a job in hospitality: Sam gets Jake to give her dad, Jim, a job at Shooters. Not even Billy's report of receiving threats from Jim about their relationship can convince Sam that his sudden return is worrisome and that Jim is keeping secrets from her. And she's not the only one awkwardly reuniting with a parent: Chelsea's mother Denise returns, much to Matt's chagrin. Jake and Alison decide to let fate determine where they're going to elope, and Megan refuses instructions from Michael on a scheme to undermine Peter, but accepts advice from Kimberly's ghost on how to keep their marriage alive. The last episode having left both Alison and Kimberly in possibly mortal danger from their own bodies (and not fire, or Michael, as is usually the case), it makes sense that they share the A plot. Alison has been hospitalized with toxemia and orders not to do anything that might raise her blood pressure, including watch TV -- which seems crazy until some gossip Jake relays (well, look who's suddenly not to good to repeat scandalous stories) makes her laugh herself into a seizure. Mrs. Shaw has responded to Michael's call and is, justifiably, horrified by the sight of her daughter's condition. But while Kimberly wants to leave Los Angeles on good terms with the only two characters who are still speaking to her, Mrs. Shaw (again, justifiably) hates Michael and doesn't want to co-operate. Billy's not happy with the way Sam's father Jim is taking advantage of her, and the more he learns about Jim's life of crime, the less he likes him. And while Sam herself is clearly also uncomfortable about Jim's return to her life, Sydney can't notice or care, since she's busy defending herself, very badly, against Hilda's nuisance suit. Peter may have moved on from Amanda, but he's apparently yet to move on from Beth, while Amanda ruins Craig's attempts to spend time with her outside of work by inviting Kyle along. And Chelsea's mother actually decides to phone her half-orphaned child at Matt's, and announce her plans to take Chelsea back to Paris with her. Alison continues to go stir-crazy on cervix-related bed rest, so when Amanda announces that she's taking over one of Alison's big clients, Alison decides the money is too important, and sneaks into the office for a day to do the pitch herself. Of course this is the one day Jake ever comes home early from Shooters, and the return of Seething Incubator Cop Jake is unwelcome to say the least. Things are far different for Alison's boss, however! Taylor has fully moved in with Peter, ignoring all hints and direct recommendations that she not plan to make it permanent. And the way people are sharing her personal business, she shouldn't plan on going back to Kyle, either: Amanda tells him what she heard Jake heard Alison heard in the courtyard in the last episode, so Kyle confronts Taylor and finally gets her to admit the whole truth about why they live in Los Angeles now. But if divorce has turned Kyle into a twisted husk, Amanda is living her best life: buying a Jaguar, killing the game at work, and flirting with Kyle -- maybe for real, and maybe just for sport. Michael decides that the way to make sure Megan doesn't accidentally become a sex worker again is to give her a straight job, which is how she becomes the practice's newest receptionist. It's also how she happens to be present when Kimberly's neurologist shows up to tell Michael that Kimberly is at risk of dying from an aneurysm if she won't agree to surgery. Michael either doesn't believe it or doesn't care, but when Megan goes to see her, she can tell the danger to Kimberly's life is very real, and does what all Burns-Mancini office staffers do: she steals from the practice (this time, to send a nurse to take care of Kimberly). While Sydney tries to handle her lawsuit -- which is going to be hard, because she carelessly let her insurance lapse and can't afford a lawyer -- Samantha climbs the friendship ladder with another neighbor, pitching in on Matt's efforts to locate his runaway niece. With so many people's drama suddenly exploding into chaos, how is SYDNEY the pivot point? Well: she lets it slip in conversation with Peter that she slept with Kyle at the restaurant. Somehow, Megan's arrest makes it to the newspaper of a large metropolitan city, causing her scandalized landlady to evict her on 24 hours' notice. Megan self-pities her way through the next couple of days, moving into a cheap motel and leaving all vestiges of her life with Michael back at her vacant house for him to collect. Amanda immediately regrets revenge-boning Craig, but honestly, she gets off easiest in this episode! Taylor takes her bruised face to Peter's, and is horrified to learn that Peter totally knew that Amanda saw them fooling around but declined to tell her: now she's worried that the information is going to get back to Kyle, known loose cannon. Turns out she's right to be worried about BOTH those things, and probably should have spent some of her commuting time coming up with better cover stories than "I was at the gym" to satisfy Kyle's curiosity. She's such a bad liar, in fact, that Kyle returns to Nick to find out what HE knows; when he hears the tape of Taylor and Peter's filthy phone sex, it seems like he really wishes he hadn't. Josh The Pimp hatches an extremely baroque plan: Kimberly will think she's showing Michael that Megan is seeing clients again, but ACTUALLY Josh and Megan will be setting Kimberly up to look like a liar by lining up a fake client. But could it ACTUALLY be the case that Josh has his own agenda? HMMM. Also Matt has a brother named Luke -- or, rather, had, because the first time we're hearing about him is when their mom tells Matt that he died in a plane crash, leaving a teen daughter, Chelsea, who may have bigger issues than either of Luke's adult survivors is prepared to deal with. Meanwhile, Craig pouts his way into getting Amanda to rent him Alison's old apartment (VERY old, at this point -- has it been vacant this whole time?!), on the condition that he not use it to insinuate himself further into her life. It truly takes no time at all for Nick to follow Peter and Taylor to a public place and snap a bunch of photos of the two of them having sex, so whatever Craig is paying him for surveillance...it's too much. Also getting embroiled with the McBrides: Carter, who decides that just giving up his software company wasn't enough of a change, and that he also needs to cosplay as a member of the working class by getting a job as a waiter at Kyle's -- where Craig happens to catch Nick giving Taylor and Peter a dirty look and enlisting him on the spot to spy for Craig, as part of Craig's ongoing campaign to date Amanda. Jake takes a break from acting out about his breakup with Alison to remember he has a child already and go visit him, and his (re-cast) mother, in northern California. In another classic midseason Melrose Place two-parter, Amanda and Peter each notch a big career win through underhanded schemes against their enemies. OBVIOUSLY THESE TWO ARE MADE FOR EACH OTHER, which is why it's so frustrating that timing and circumstances (read: the writers) keep conspiring (read: contriving) to keep them from reconciling. For most of this episode, Taylor's not even to blame, because she's occupied with Kyle's shitty friend Nick...who happens to have noticed how much Taylor lights up when Peter comes to Kyle's and vaguely threatens to use this against her, since apparently Kyle hasn't spent any of their bro time together complaining about it. When Sydney pushes Sam to the brink of insanity, Billy seizes his moment to invite Sam to move in with him instead, just in time for Alison and Jake to have a huge fight, requiring Alison to bunk with the newly-cohabitant. Sydney, meanwhile, is still working on driving a wedge between Carter and Walter. Megan would probably LOVE to drive a wedge between Michael and Kimberly, but Kimberly is just better at convincing Michael that she needs him to be her hospice nurse, and maybe more.
