MP S05.E17: Better Homes And Condos
The less said about a completely nonsensical fight between Sam and Sydney over Jane's former apartment, the better: the upshot is that Billy recommends that Sam explore her rights by talking to a lawyer about it, only to regret it when it turns out she knows one, because they used to date. While this is going on, Sydney blows town with Carter to visit important locations from his formative years. Are they sneaking off in defiance of Walter, or playing right into his hands? Jake is excited to show Alison the house he wants to raise their child in, completely oblivious to the look of abject terror on her face. While Michael is unconscious following his (latest) car crash, a hallucination of his two most recent wives seems to push him toward Megan. But when he comes to, Kimberly tells him she's ready to accept his help through her last weeks on earth. Amanda has regrets about how things are going in her marriage when Peter tells her he's rented himself a new place, and Peter's good friend Taylor has problems with a whole new man: Kyle's old army buddy Nick. MP S05.E16: The Eyes Of The Storm
Getting shoved through a glass table turns out to have been the last straw for Matt, who has an infuriatingly offscreen conversation with Peter about Dan; Peter then confronts Dan about it, and Dan reacts as though Peter has authority over him, for some reason? Peter also helps Michael meddle in Kimberly's private medical affairs after Kimberly lies to Michael that she's totally not dying at all. Once Michael knows the truth, he informs Kimberly that he's going to spending as much time with her as he possibly can; she pretends to go along, but then finds a pier. She loses the nerve to die by suicide then, but it's not her last attempt of the episode. At D&D, Amanda starts right in using Craig's disclosure to her own advantage, but may overplay her hand when she involves Arthur himself. You're not going to believe this but Jane was no better running this business than she was any of the others we've seen her in charge of, and Sydney's doing a lot of scrambling to get on top of the mess Jane left. The situation is so dire that it might really help if Sydney had another source of income, yet when Walter offers to pay her to hang out with Carter, she says no. Instead, she chases the money for the "Kirov" paintings from Kyle, reigniting Taylor's suspicions. When Sam's not occupied getting bossed around by Sydney, she's helping her apparent new best friend Alison determine that she definitely is pregnant, and encouraging her to bring Jake into the conversation. MP S05.E15: Escape From L.A.
Pretty much everyone crowds into the overstuffed A plot: Peter, with his regained doctorly confidence, attempts to reconcile with Amanda, but right now she's laser-focused on getting Craig to tell her his big secret about Arthur. Sam and Billy are annoyingly happy -- and since all the boning means Sam definitely can't let her Pill prescription lapse, she happens to be at the drugstore when Alison is picking out a pregnancy test. Matt comes up with a story about how he got his black eye, which no one finds convincing -- particularly not after Matt and Dan have dinner with Sam and Billy (?), and Dan can barely stop himself controlling Matt's wine consumption. Sydney grows increasingly frustrated by Carter's apparent unwillingness to spend any time with her outside of his house and away from his "online conferences." But the plotline's biggest fireworks are for Jane, who gets robbed at gunpoint in the store and struggles to determine what the right path forward may be. Megan and Kimberly manage to convince Michael that they haven't been collaborating, leading Michael to sign the divorce papers and go to Vegas with Megan. But back in L.A., Peter's sniffing around Kimberly's doctors, and soon calls with bad news. Escape into our podcast on "Escape From L.A."! MP S05.E14: The Accidental Doctor
Sherry's holiday stay with Jane has now stretched into January, fraying the patience of everyone but an oblivious Jane. Sherry returns to her own place, and her local bar, worn down by the stress of living up to all of Jane's hopes for their relationship; Sydney, fortunately, can temporarily forget her irritation at Sherry's presence in their lives by spending more time with Carter -- very lucrative time, in fact. Sam doesn't seem to be at the store at all, as she runs around trying to sell some of her old paintings for quick cash so she can make it home to Maryland for a family reunion. But will her work find a good home? Peter is not having a great time during his separation from Amanda, which Taylor is straining to make permanent. Things at the practice are still tenuous too; can anything help him recover his confidence as a doctor? In other relationship news, Kimberly continues to puppeteer Megan into securing Michael's affections, while Dan escalates his control over Matt. MP S05.E13: Crazy Love
The holidays have come again to Melrose Place, but they're generally not going to be very happy. Peter agrees to Amanda's request that he visit a therapist, but then gets angry and jealous when her professional obligations prevent her from participating in his treatment. Kimberly tries to help the Michael/Megan relationship along by sharing her plan to bequeath Michael a big life insurance windfall, but Megan is understandably upset that Kimberly intends to do it by faking her own accidental death. Matt starts to push back against Dan's attempts to control him with his money. The end of Sam and Craig's relationship has her up in arms about his refusal to return her courtyard painting, so Billy volunteers to help her get it back -- just as Sydney admits that another piece of Sam's work is up for auction at a charity event, and that Kyle's actually been buying all the "Kirov" pieces at the restaurant but that Sam hasn't seen any money for them because Kyle's on a payment plan that hasn't kicked in yet. Jane impulsively invites Sherry to spend the holidays with her, and Sherry impulsively accepts even though she finds Jane's many questions about her own birth very painful to answer. And when the season brings up painful childhood memories for Alison of keeping up appearances amid her father's abuse, Jake actually comes up with a pretty good solution for making new traditions for their family. MP S05.E12: Quest For Mother
When, as predicted, Peter learns he's out of contention for the Wilshire Memorial chief of staff job, he ponders a change of career. Amanda thinks transitioning into medical research would be fine, but actually, he's thinking golf pro! She's annoyed enough by that prospect that she doesn't even notice Taylor sneakily reserving him to join her in marking the anniversary of Beth's death, but lighting candles in her memory isn't all she plans to do. Also: Taylor's request for two nights off a week from the restaurant leads Kyle to the dangerous choice of hiring Sydney as her part-time replacement. Michael, conflicted about the divorce, decides to move out of the beach house and in with Matt, instead of Megan. This is just fine with Dan, who asks Matt to sublet his place to Michael and move in with Dan instead! Matt is wary, but is he wary enough? Craig uses the mere threat of exposing Arthur's as-yet-undisclosed misdeeds to get him to drop the lawsuit; however, this win in his professional life is cancelled out by a loss in his personal life, as Samantha proves receptive to Billy's whispers about what Craig may expect in return for renting the studio for her. Finally, Jane successfully tracks down her biological mother, Sherry (Donna Mills!), but is disappointed that Sherry does not share her eagerness to connect. MP S05.E11: Sole Sister
Work continues to be a trial for both Peter and Amanda, although given their natural temperaments, he's having a harder time with it than she is. After choking in surgery at the end of the previous episode, Peter assumes -- probably correctly -- that he's doomed his chance to be Chief of Staff, and mopes that he's in a tailspin. Amanda's basically like, "You'll get yourself out of it, byeeeee," and takes off to D&D, where she continues manipulating Craig to achieve her own ends. The Craig era isn't great for Billy either, and two of his still-living exes are really showing him up: Alison is seriously mulling Jake's partnership offer, and Samantha's being showered with expensive gifts by Craig, Billy's mortal enemy. Jane returns from Chicago and shares her big news with Sydney, who is nearly as shaken by it as Jane was herself. Sydney is upset at the thought that Jane already doesn't consider them sisters anymore, partly because she needs to talk to someone about Kyle and Jane's all she's got. But Jane is focused on one thing: tracking down her biological mother. Elsewhere, Megan can't help feeling that Michael is comparing her to Kimberly and finding her wanting; and Matt gets a troubling glimpse at what Dan has been like with other partners. MP S05.E10: Nice Work If You Can Get It
The promise of regaining Wilshire Memorial's Chief of Staff job has Peter re-energized about his career. He's even going back into the OR! Sadly, his good mood sours quickly, and when Amanda's not around to comfort him, he turns to...well, not the next best thing, but the thing that's around all the time: Taylor. Her contact with Peter is in direct contravention of Kyle's clear request that she stop spending time with Peter for the sake of her marriage, and is sick of her weaseling out of disputes by throwing his infidelity in his face. Meanwhile, Amanda -- the one who first alerted Kyle that he should be suspicious of the time Taylor spends with Peter -- is tied up with work stuff. Now that Craig has learned that he's the majority shareholder at D&D, he's ready to start making changes immediately. Since this means a huge demotion for Amanda, she goes behind Craig's back to the old man, who asks her to play along with Craig's big plans for the sake of Amanda's money, and Arthur's. Craig might not even notice any duplicity on Amanda's part since he's pretty focused on Samantha, to Billy's chagrin. Jane heads home to Chicago to visit her parents and complain about the mess she's made of her life. A conversation at Mrs. Andrews's medical appointment forces her to tell Jane something she apparently hoped she and Mr. Andrews would never have to admit: Jane is adopted! Back in Los Angeles, Megan is settling nicely into mistress life (though she does note that Michael's being very controlling). After Kimberly busts in on Michael and Megan, "discovering" their relationship, Michael moves out of the beach house and Kimberly prepares to brief Megan on Phase 2 of their scheme. But Megan's uncomfortable keeping the secret of Kimberly's diagnosis from him, and her insistence on spilling forces Kimberly to make a shocking pivot. Finally, Matt finally talks Dr. Dan into bed, and Jake renews his suggestion that Alison join him as the half owner of Shooters. MP S05.E09: Farewell, Mike’s Concubine
Peter's got a lot on his mind this week: Michael's confidently claiming that he's about to be Wilshire Memorial's next Chief of Staff; Amanda's found out about the time he's secretly been spending with Taylor. And while he's pretty sure he knows how to deal with Michael's BS in a way that will benefit himself, his plan to tell Amanda about his secret ex-in-law falls apart when he...runs it by Taylor first? Somehow she's the only person whose motivations he CAN'T see through. When Michael isn't pursuing his career goals, he's pursuing Megan harder than ever. Kimberly having ordered Megan to stop seeing Michael, Megan tries to ankle him for about ten seconds. Kimberly really is not getting what she paid for. Matt and Dr. Dan go on one date, after which Matt is ready to bone and settle down, in that order; Dan is very interested in Matt, but he wants to TAKE THINGS SLOW and MAKE SURE MATT DOESN'T GET HURT. What could his deal possibly be? Billy lets Amanda know what went down at D&D while she was on her business trip: two off-the-books board meetings. Amanda leverages Craig's flop pitch to a $2 million airline client to get him to track down those meeting notes for her. Part of her plan to shore up the campaign: bringing Alison in for a three-day consulting gig and a fat paycheck. Craig takes his sweet time looking for those notes, because he's got Samantha to woo, but eventually finds a lot more than he expected. Say hello to our podcast on "Farewell, Mike's Concubine"! MP S05.E08: Mission: Interpersonal
Michael is more obsessed than ever with figuring out what Megan's trying so hard to hide from him, eventually memorizing her license plate number and finding out where she actually lives. She manages to stonewall him until he follows her to an appointment and she's forced into a confession. Elsewhere, Kimberly finds out what Dr. Stein found during her physical: she has an inoperable brain tumor, and a three-month prognosis. How will she tell Michael...or will she tell him anything at all? (Matt is also around, still trying to get things going with Dr. Dan.) Following her big disclosure at the end of the previous episode, Taylor convinces Peter to keep their connection secret from their spouses: Kyle can get so jealous, and it's not like there will ever even be anything for him to get jealous about! Amanda's work trip to Portland gives Taylor plenty of time to continue creeping on Peter, though now her creepitude is freighted with more meaning and history. She should possibly spend less time focusing on Peter and more time noticing how much attention Sydney has been paying Kyle. The Jane/Jake/Alison conflict finally reaches a climax that is deeply embarrassing for Jane. And while Samantha and Billy have already dealt with one stumbling block in the form of Billy's distasteful personality, they now have to face another one, named Craig. MP S05.E07: Young Doctors In Heat
So Michael and Kimberly still aren't having sex, and her psychiatrist thinks there may be a physical cause. Will a complete workup reveal what the issue is, or is Kimberly perfectly content being celibate and having Michael as her best friend? Michael might be fine with that too, if it means he can keep having sex with the mystery blonde down the beach (Megan Lewis, it turns out), though he also may screw that up by demanding to know more about her life than she wants to tell him. Amanda and Peter are still snapping at each other, which Peter thinks he can fix by moving out for a while. And Taylor continues staring at him creepily whenever she sees him, though at least she FINALLY tells both him and us how she's connected to him. Jane is still determined to ruin Alison and Jake's lives. Jake reaches out to Sydney for help, and agrees with her that the right course is to ignore Jane and let her return to normal on her own; however, Alison refuses to get on board with this plan. Sydney herself, meanwhile, continues to fixate on Kyle -- but maybe the guy Samantha fixes her up with can distract her? Matt, alas, continues to resist working on his recovery, and Dr. Dan's line-blurring doesn't really help. Pour yourself a cool drink and get into our podcast on "Young Doctors In Heat"! MP S05.E06: Jane’s Addiction
The problems Amanda is facing in this episode are hardly the worst Melrose Place has ever thrown at her, but there are LOTS of them, and they're coming at her from all sides. D&D is toxic in a whole new way, and her choices for second-in-command are apparently limited to Billy or Craig. Peter just seems to be goofing off instead of beating the bushes for new patients to replace the ones he lost while he was incarcerated -- and every time she catches him being especially lazy, one or more of the McBrides is around. Our queen does not deserve this! With the restaurant's opening upon us, Kyle is interested in acquiring some original art for the walls, and takes a liking to the piece Samantha created for the window at Jane's; Sydney nominates herself to be Samantha's agent, and to make herself more available to Kyle, too. The love pentagon grows ever more accursed, with Jane escalating her hostilities from brick throwing to tire slashing. Jake and Alison remain convinced that their own exes couldn't be stalking them, and their bickering about it only furthers Jane's nefarious plans. But if dating Billy really was something she intended to do, she fails on that front: Billy is only into Samantha. Michael is once again approached by that pretty blonde jogger, who slips him her address and orders him to come service her sexually. And Matt discovers that leaving rehab did not reset his whole life to where it was before he started using speed. No need to keep fiending: our podcast on "Jane's Addiction" is here! MP S05.E05: Un-Janed Melody
Amanda and Peter's decision to take a quick honeymoon in Santa Barbara causes a LOT of unexpected ripples! Taylor, overhearing Kimberly and Michael talking about it at the practice, rooks Kyle into going to the same resort so she can continue creeping around Peter. While Amanda's out of the office, her slimy boss Arthur installs his son Craig (David Charvet) and makes Billy show him the ropes, but it's immediately clear that both Field men have a bigger plan for the agency. Jane frees Jake and Alison from Alison's burning apartment, but seeing them comfort each other seems to send her around the bend: while assuring the new couple that she's definitely totally happy for them, she tries to get Billy to join her in a scheme to break them up (which Billy declines, since he's all about Samantha again). And Michael drops a resistant Matt off at rehab...but maybe once he gets there he'll realize it's not so bad...? Sing it if you know it: we've brought you a new podcast on "Un-Janed Melody"! MP S05.E04: Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love
Who's having problems with their living situation? Who isn't! Peter assumes that, now that they're married, Amanda will move into his nice big house; he has no interest in even discussing the idea of moving into her pokey little apartment. But then some tough financial realities take the decision out of his hands. If anything were to convince Amanda to change her address, it would probably be Taylor constantly trying to ingratiate herself to Amanda -- this time, by asking Amanda to take the Kyle's restaurant account at D&D. Michael is disappointed to learn that Kimberly's decision to surrender her medical license will not mean she's more available to keep his home for him. And every time Matt leaves home, he seems to get into big, potentially life-threatening trouble. Billy reacts to the news of Alison and Jake's relationship by kicking his own door down -- which Samantha witnesses, and yet does not move her to find another apartment complex to live in. But Alison may need to find a new place soon, thanks to a fateful visit from Jane. Please enjoy our hot new episode on "Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love"! MP S05.E03: Moving Violations
Things are looking bleak for Peter's defense: Kimberly still hasn't recovered her memory, and when she gets coerced into testifying anyway, her sketchy story only makes his case look worse. You know who sure is interested in all of this for someone who, officially, doesn't know Peter at all? Taylor, whose need to start sniffing around the courtroom draws suspicion from Kyle, and also sticks him with all the work of moving into their new apartment. Alison is moving too, and Billy is both eager to impose his assistance on her and strangely put-upon about participating in a process no one asked him to be involved in. Michael also gets wise to Matt's theft of his prescription pad, but his threats come too late for Matt to have attracted the suspicion of his attending physician. Out in the woods, Richard is about as well prepared for his murderous activities as Jane was -- which is to say, not at all. All the confusion ends up requiring Samantha to get embroiled, again, and while she is starting to worry about throwing her lot in -- at both work and home -- with an apparent criminal, is she anywhere near as worried as she should be? MP S05.E02: Over Dick’s Dead Body
Peter tells Amanda it doesn't matter what the cops think about Beth's demise, or what her diary said: he definitely did euthanize her. Amanda's not bothered, nor is Det. Wylie when she confronts him about knowing all along that Peter had been exonerated: he's feeling good about the case now that Kimberly is in the wind. For...about ten minutes, until Michael finds her walking down the street. Kimberly admits that she can't talk to the cops about the night of Bobby's death because she doesn't remember what she was doing. When Amanda's newest tenant, Taylor, is surprised by the arrival of her husband Kyle in the city, she has to start doing some fancy footwork to convince him that she really just came on a lark but that now she thinks they should leave the running of their Boston restaurant to the guy who's handling it now, and open a second location in Los Angeles. He agrees, and is not remotely suspicious about how quickly she finds them a great apartment in a complex with a pool! But Amanda is keeping an eye on Taylor and how overly familiar she is. Samantha is starting to worry about Jane's erratic behavior, and begs Sydney to help calm her down. But when Sydney brings Jane to the site of Richard's burial to prove that he's still in the hole they dug, a ransom demand left in the shallow grave puts them both on edge. Matt can't even question why Sydney's photocopying cash because he's only in Michael's office to steal his prescription pad and refill his DEXEDRINE supply. Alison and Jake are still having fun boning in secret, but she feels they could save a lot of hassle if she moved out of the complex, and everyone is taking it very seriously. MP S05.E01: Living With Disaster
Amanda doesn't want to believe that her brand-new husband Peter has been living under an assumed identity literally the whole time she's known him, but she also can't help finding Det. Wylie pretty credible. So she gets him to spill what he knows and follows the trail to Kansas City, to find out what went on there before he came into her life. Michael continues his vigil at Kimberly's bedside (Matt and his new ultra-quick speech patterns -- his speedy speech, you might say! -- aren't much help.) Everyone sure does hope Kimberly will wake up soon and confirm Peter's alibi, because the news of Peter's arrest is spreading far and wide -- why, it's even front-page news in Boston, where a Taylor McBride (Lisa Rinna!) gasps at the report and ditches her husband Kyle (Rob Estes!) to follow up. Jane and Sydney are trying very hard to plant a plausible cover story about Richard's disappearance and get back to their lives. But strange occurrences, from muddy footprints in Richard's hallway to a shove left outside Jane's door, leave them rattled (and are probably also unsettling to Samantha, who's moved in just in time to see her boss acting very squirrelly). Jane also has to try to get rid of Billy and his yammering about his great love affair with Alison; sadly, he remains oblivious to the chemistry surging between Jake and Alison, and the fact that she stood him up on his fancy violin restaurant date because she was too busy boning Jake. "Wait, you left someone out. Where's Jo?" Sorry, you're going to have to wait until literally more than 3/4 of the way through the episode to find out. If not, it's an arena where combatants are sent to fight to the death. So we're engaging in a thought experiment where we throw in 18 90210 side characters, talk through who would probably prevail in several rounds of combat, and eventually winnow the list down to one ultimate champion. MP S04.E32: Dead Sisters Walking
Obviously, Sydney knows her bargaining position is weak, but she really attempts many different arguments to convince Jane not to follow through on her whole Richard-killing plan. None of them works. A Hail Mary to get JAKE to talk to Jane and urge her not to make any "funky" decisions -- not that she specifies what those might be -- does bring Jake to the design studio just in time to see Jane trying to distract Richard from his (accurate) suspicions about her financial malfeasance by making out with him. So Jake's out on Jane -- and while you'd think that would just cause him to take Alison up on her advances, he's just too good a pal and doesn't want to betray Billy, who's trying even harder to woo Alison back than Alison is trying to seduce Jake. What a mess! Speaking of which: Willowbridge. Amanda and Michael are swiftly apprehended breaking in, but it's no big deal to Betsy, who simply locks both of them AND Peter in a boiler room and lets her staff know that all three of them are going to get lobotomies; see, Amanda and Michael aren't friends of Kimberly and Peter but rather escaped mental patients who've made it all the way to this...other mental hospital to...? Look, it's not a great cover story, which is why everyone from Nurse Benson to Dave start poking holes in it. But will Nurse Benson turn on Betsy in time to save everyone's brains?! Matt recovers from meningitis only to be rather easily convinced that in order to keep up with his studies, he's going to need to start taking prescription speed. And things are going pretty well for Jo and Dr. O'Malley until he has her over to his apartment for the very first time and abruptly announces that he thinks they should get married. MP S04.E31: Full Metal Betsy
Peter is down bad at Willowbridge, but not out: he decides to try to work his magic on the soft-hearted, lonely, apparently horny Nurse Benson (Priscilla Presley!), offering to "make [her] happy," wink, if she'll just help him leave the hospital -- even just for one night! Meanwhile, on the outside, Amanda and (to a much lesser extent) Michael make pretty decent amateur sleuths, as Amanda tracks Kimberly's ATM use to the vicinity of Willowbridge, and the two hit the road in search of their troublesome loved ones. But with Betsy in control of Peter's care and the hospital, will it all be in vain?! Jane happens into a clothing boutique that's about to close, and spontaneously decides she wants to take it over. But when she goes to Michael for some quick cash, trying to guilt him into giving it up, he tells her that actually her sister's the one she should be trying to avenge herself on financially -- you know, because of that whole thing where Sydney drugged and paralyzed her? (That was this season, btw, can you believe it?) Anyway, Sydney kind of tries to make things right, but just ends up walking in -- and straight back out -- on Jane cleaning her gun on the coffee table. Jake has apparently washed his hands of Jane after seeing her in Richard's company, so he's not paying attention to any of this; in fact, he's paying a lot more attention to Alison, putatively trying to help his pal Billy reunite with her, but...maybe not really? MP S04.E30: Peter’s Excellent Adventure
Peter gets a lot of bad news right away: Alycia's dead, Kimberly's in the wind, and all evidence points to him as Bobby's murderer. At least he convinces Amanda that he didn't kill her ex, even though she, you know, obviously knows he definitely DID try to kill AMANDA HERSELF. But never mind! He's very pleased when Kimberly appears at his house out of the blue, but despite criticizing MICHAEL earlier for not noticing wild swings in Kimberly's personality, Peter does not interpret the headband and sister-wife dress as representing one of Kimberly's alters. Betsy pretends to agree to corroborate Peter's alibi to the cops, but then enacts her own scheme to get him out of her way. Will amateur sleuths Michael and Amanda crack the case in time? After Alison gets between Richard and Jake (or rather Jake's murderous rage), she manages to talk Jane into meeting with a friend of Alison's at the DA's office (?) about pressing charges against Richard -- and Jane does seem optimistic and energized in Alison's pal's office...until she warns Jane about how weak her case is, and how humiliating it will be for Jane to go through with it. Alison and Jake try to hector Jane into following all the "correct" steps for a sexual assault survivor, but Jane has other ideas. And when Dr. O'Malley isn't treating an obstreperous unhoused teen with a mysterious illness (though Matt is taking the brunt of the kid's sarcastic abuse), he's making things awkward with Jo by spouting off about irresponsible parents who give birth to children they then don't raise themselves. MP S04.E29: Melrose Unglued
How do you follow up an episode that closed with one partner in a medical practice getting arrested for sexual misconduct while the other -- who was actually guilty of the crime -- was left unconscious and possibly dead from a hammer blow by one of his wife's Dissociative Identity Disorder alters? It seems unlikely but "MELROSE UNGLUED ACTUALLY TOPS IT." Amanda finds a way to buy Peter out of his legal trouble, just as Kimberly decides to kick Michael out of the beach house for his own safety. Bobby accidentally discovers Sydney's new porn-producing sideline, and while she's dismayed that he feels so betrayed by her lies that he doesn't think they can EVER be together now, she doesn't back out of the movie, which is how she's the one to find out -- from Jimmy -- that Vincent wasn't behind the cable company double-cross. Her attempt to use this information to get back in Bobby's good graces does not go the way she had hoped! Jake asks Alison to find out why Jane, who's been stonewalling him, has seemed so distant since her return from New York; Jane might soon regret confiding her secret in someone with no poker face. And since Dr. O'Malley is still definitely horny for Jo, she uses his interest to her advantage to continue pursuing the case of Tyler's abuse. Stick around for our podcast on "Melrose Unglued"! MP S04.E28: True Fibs
Teri has decided to sidestep charges and just sue Peter over the Brandi affair. Almost everyone is telling him to settle -- like Michael, who offers to pitch in, and Alycia, who...is representing him despite their rather recent and quite acrimonious breakup; only Amanda is urging him to defend himself. Perhaps given all this trouble, he's a bit distracted when Kimberly begs for his help with her mental-health issues. Richard has arranged a meeting for himself and Jane with the biggest retailer on the east coast, but Jane is wary of traveling with him to see the client in New York, given her history with Richard. After celebrating a successful pitch together, Richard almost immediately proves her fears were very well-founded. Jo continues worrying about Tyler, involving Matt so that he can connect her with a prof of his who's a child abuse expert. How many boundaries will Jo break to confirm her suspicions about Laurie? Billy is surprised that Alison isn't making herself available to help him with his pitch to ONLINEBANK. And an old friend of Bobby's approaches him with an opportunity to get into films. MP S04.E27: What Comes Up, Must Come Down
Though we might find it impossible to imagine D&D without Amanda, it seems that her jerk boss Arthur Field doesn't think she's so integral: he still hasn't renewed her contract, even though she's still boning his golden boy Billy and fending off Peter's advances. Stung, Peter agrees to do Kimberly a favor by getting Michael out of town for a few days, and brings him to San Diego to judge a beauty contest (...sure?), where they meet Teri and Brandi, a mother-daughter team (Loni Anderson and Denise Richards!) who are determined to go to any lengths -- sexually speaking -- to assure Brandy's victory in the pageant, despite both doctors' attempts to remain chaste. Meanwhile, Amanda insists to Billy that she doesn't want him to speak up to the board on her behalf, but can he possibly follow such an order, given how he feels about her? Sydney's old friend Laurie (Justine Priestley, as in Jason's sister!) descends on the complex with her son Tyler, looking for a place to crash. Since Sydney is all caught up with her pursuit of Bobby, she blows her off, and they end up staying with Jo instead, letting Jo play mommy for a little while. Jake tells Jane about his brilliant plan to entangle Richard back in her business. And Matt finds that life after Alan isn't exactly what he had hoped. MP S04.E26: Triumph Of The Bill
It's time for the social event of the year: the Coastal Advertising Conference! And Billy has been preparing by going being Amanda's back to her boss, Arthur Field ("...Who?" exactly) and lobbying him to let Billy make the keynote speech even though Amanda has done it for the past several years. Amanda decides to spite both Arthur AND Billy by giving the assignment to Alison...and from there things get weirdly complicated and a perfectly nice old lady who used to be on Batman gets hurt in the process. Jane and Jake's relationship is also hitting some snags: Clare still wants to bone Jake even though she's now working for Jane, and though Jo tries as hard as she can not to tell Jake about Jane's tiki torching, she eventually cracks. Rita, a sexy and dangerous biker, joins the party in Kimberly's head, and Peter is not discerning enough to recognize her after two conversations, perhaps because he is not a mental health professional. And as Sydney keeps getting closer to Bobby, he finds her goofy charms harder and harder to resist. MP S04.E25: The Burning Couch
Now that Alycia has succeeded in pushing Bobby out of the company, Peter (whose injuries from that four-foot fall over the railing in the previous episode were not serious) is ready to part ways with Alycia: there's nothing left to scheme about and they don't really like each other. But she isn't ready to let him go, and informs him that buying his way out of both the cable company and their sham relationship will cost him $2 million. Maybe the vodka creep, whom Billy's still sniffing around, is interested in investing in this sector? Meanwhile, Peter spitefully presses assault charges against Bobby, and it falls to Sydney to bail him out and continue hanging around him despite his clear requests that she knock it off. Jake finally finds out about Jane's part in Richard's fashion show disaster and gets drunk and vengeful about it with a random woman he meets at a fashion-industry event...or is she? Kimberly continues to lose time to an increasingly angry Betsy; when Kimberly confides in Peter (still not a psychiatric professional), he agrees to help her cover up her new issues and prescribes something. Is it stronger than Betsy? And that notorious photo of Matt and Alan outside the dance-athon resurfaces in a tabloid story outing Alan, but WHO LEAKED IT?! MP S04.E24: Ruthless People
It's not only that Billy continues to be the absolute worst -- which he absolutely does. It's that Amanda keeps coming right up to the edge of shutting him down and then doesn't, because even though he's a pig, he's a pig who's bringing work to the agency. This time, his risky gambit is to take a vodka client he and Alison are pitching to get a true "American" experience at a strip club with mud wrestling, and then try to close the client by letting the guy mud-wrestle Alison. And when he steps to Amanda's own marquee client? ...Well, maybe we can forgive her for not reprimanding him since she's got other things on her mind, which we'll get to. The plans for Alan and Val's wedding cause tension between Alan and Matt, which only rises when Alan's doting parents show up, so relieved that the boy they'd been worrying about is not actually Funny or That Way that they're throwing themselves into the wedding festivities with near-evangelical fervor. Matt's attempt to seek comfort from David, apparently his only friend, only complicates matters. Things have been going so well for Kimberly lately that it's time for her to start experiencing a new mental health issue. When Amanda accepts Alycia's framing of Bobby's legal difficulties, Bobby takes his disappointment out on Amanda's door frame. And Richard reaches rock bottom, but maybe Jane shouldn't gloat too much about how he got there. We bring no mercy to our podcast on "Ruthless People"! MP S04.E23: Run, Billy, Run
This plot to bring down Bobby's cable company is turning out to be a real drag for everyone behind it! First Alycia has an attack of conscience about making Bobby look like a mobster when what he wanted most was to go legit. Then Peter hears from Amanda that she's on the company's board of directors, so if Bobby goes down, he might drag her down with him. Will Peter be able to get this scandal train off the tracks before it crushes his beloved?! After Alison sleeps with Billy and THEN tells him she's finished with him as a boyfriend prospect, Billy has nothing but time to launch his own schemes at D&D: he tricks Amanda into agreeing to a gigantic raise if he can successfully pitch an airline client, then bones an employee from a rival agency to find out what they're going to be presenting. And would you believe there's even MORE workplace sabotage on the docket this week? After Jane abandons her own collection, having seen all her inspiration purloined by Richard, she takes advantage of Jo's extremely extra runway design to bring Richard's fashion show to an abrupt halt. Finally, Sydney settles uneasily into her new role as the Burns & Mancini office manager, and Matt continues fuming about Alan's upcoming sham nuptials. MP S04.E22: The Circle Of Strife
You know how when you have one ex-wife working for you and then pick back up with the ex-wife you actually haven't divorced yet and this one lets you know she wants you to fire the other one? Well, Michael does! After Kimberly uses her wiles to convince Michael to let Sydney go, Sydney fires back with sexual harassment lawsuits Peter and Michael are kind of forced to take seriously. At the same time, Peter is firming up his relationship with Alycia and getting her further onto his side and against Bobby by telling her the real (or is it) story of his grudge against the Parezis. With Jane and Richard still bitterly fighting as they each prepare for interviews on a fashion TV show, Jo sort of tries to stay above the fray by bringing Jane some of her work from the office...and then accidentally leaves with more than she came with. Billy has apparently exorcised Brooke's spirit, but his bad attitude toward her is still present, and now he's just directing his excessively confident dickishness at his boss, his closest colleague, and even his clients. And Alan once again catches Matt being chastely friendly with David and flies way off the handle, only to end up with a much more serious entanglement by episode's end. MP S04.E21: Devil In A Wet Dress
As we probably all assumed after the last episode, Brooke is not coming back from her fall into the pool. Billy does his best not to let his estranged wife's sudden passing affect his life at all -- with a funeral to plan two days after her death, why wouldn't he still go to work and continue trying to get Alison to sleep with him? -- but it's not up to him: Brooke's restless ghost simply will not leave him alone. Michael, having determined that Kimberly is the right woman for him, won't take any of her many "no"s for an answer, and keeps pressing for them to resume a real relationship and not just keep having sex. Meanwhile, one of Michael's other ex-wives, Jane, turns up the heat with Jake while also soliciting Alison's advice on a pitch to a buyer. Jane then gets so smug about her success that Richard feels obliged to interfere with her deal. Matt is anxious about Alan's new love interest Val (Jeri Ryan!), particularly since Alan's producer has told Matt in so many words to quit being so gay around Alan in public. And Amanda, Bobby, Alycia, and Peter still aren't sure how much their entanglements with one another are about romance or friendship and how much is pure gamesmanship. While Sarah takes one more week away, we are thrilled that Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan of GoFugYourself.com can join us once again.... As Brooke's life rapidly unravels, no one cares except her mortal enemy Alison, who encourages Billy to help Brooke out financially (he does; she refuses) before finding Brooke living in her car and ordering her to come live with Alison instead. Brooke repays this kindness exactly the way you'd expect: by acting entitled to it and taking advantage of her restored proximity to mess with Billy. Peter is now scheming against Bobby on two fronts: in addition to trying to mooch information out of Alycia by dating her, he also hires Sydney for a side gig in sexspionage. Michael and Kimberly find themselves drawn back together by an extremely unlikely plot device. Jane complicates her relationship with Jo by setting up her new design studio in Jake's garage (???), depriving Jo of a parking space for her car. MP S04.E19: The Bobby Trap
Sarah is out this week spending time with family, so we welcome Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan -- authors, fashion bloggers, and longtime Melrose Place fans -- as our guest co-hosts.... It's pretty wild how Sydney's choice to abandon a partially paralyzed woman on the beach and leave her at the mercy of the tides has really sent everyone in their orbit into a tizz! Sydney herself is worried that people think she purposely tried to kill Jane and desperately doing damage control. Michael, still not convinced by any of Sydney's stories, contrives a scheme to force Kimberly to tell him the truth about the incident. And Jake is just as attracted to the partially incapacitated Jane as Michael was. But fortunately, Jane is determined never to be as helpless as she was on that beach: she doubles her PT sessions, and even pitches in at the studio to help Richard and his designs land a deal with a distributor! Now that she's on top of the world, what's left for Jane but to start making terrible decisions?! Bobby's father Vincent gets sick of waiting for Bobby to avenge Jack's death and orders Bobby back to Miami. Not only doesn't Bobby comply, but he pre-emptively hustles Amanda out of town in case Vincent hires anyone else to do the job. At the same time, Peter is still working Alycia for information on Bobby's business...or just for the usual sexy reasons. Brooke begs Alison for help getting Billy to talk to her, trading on their temporary step-relationship. And seeing Alan at work is the first time it's ever occurred to Matt that Alan might be closeted for the sake of his career. MP S04.E18: Sydney, Bothered & Bewildered
Jane's ongoing paralysis storyline basically embroils everyone this week, so let's run down the list. Peter, because Michael has made good on his threat to move out of the beach house as long as both Andrews sisters are there, and is now Odd Coupling it up at Peter's place. Bobby and Amanda, because their story branches off from Peter's. Matt, because Jo has brought him the pills she found in Richard's office to identify. Jake, because suddenly he likes Jane again. And Kimberly, because she was basically the mastermind behind the whole thing, wittingly or not. Folks: it's a lot. But that's not all: we also have the toxic triangle of Brooke, Billy, and Alison. Because of her lingering sense of responsibility toward Brooke due to having technically been her stepmother for five minutes, Alison is letting Brooke walk all over her at work. When Brooke misinterprets a moment between Billy and Alison in the D&D bullpen, things escalate. We hope you are bewitched by our podcast on "Sydney, Bothered & Bewildered"! MP S04.E17: The Brooke Stops Here
In the aftermath of Brooke's suicide attempt, a guilt-ridden Billy does everything he can think of to fulfill what he thinks are her wishes: he tells her he loves her; he gets rid of Alison; he demands that Amanda give Brooke her job back; he even cleans the bathroom floor! So if Brooke assumes they're fully back on track and that she can resume using him to try to make that baby she needs, who can really blame her? Peter confronts Bobby and Amanda about their New Year's kiss, though the result is probably not what he was hoping. After overhearing Jane, Jo, and Alison discussing who might have drugged Jane, Sydney follows Kimberly's advice to cast suspicion on the OTHER most likely culprit, Richard, by planting her pills in his office. And when Kimberly's not trying to smooth out this situation, she's creating static between Matt and Alan by spilling all the gossip about Matt and Paul. And while Jake thinks he's totally on top of his whole usury deal, Monty the loan shark lets him know that, no, actually, he's really not. MP S04.E16: Holy Strokes
It's about to be New Year's Eve, but not everyone's in a celebratory mood -- like Peter, who's getting sued for malpractice by some patient we don't know. Bobby invites Amanda and Peter to his house in Palm Springs, and though it seems like it'll be awkward with just the three of them there, Amanda rooks Alison into going, too. It's not like Alison has much going on back home: she starts out icing Billy out, some more. But then after Hayley's lawyer Norman tells Brooke that she won't inherit anything unless she has a baby, Brooke has to do some fancy footwork: first, tell Billy (outside the hospital) that she just found out she lost the baby; then tell him she wants to get pregnant again RIGHT AWAY. Billy thinks this plan is kind of creepy, though at least agreeing that Brooke is acting very weird rekindles Billy and Alison's friendship. Then Billy happens to run into Brooke's OB/GYN at the hospital and...well, things don't go well for Brooke from there. It turns out that the medical issue Jane suffered after Sydney drugged her in the last episode was a stroke -- a mild one, but she's still partially paralyzed, and after Michael sees the tox report, he forms a theory as to what happened. Fortunately for Sydney, she has Kimberly to help counsel her on covering her tracks. Matt is also still here, and still dating Alan, but since this is a Matt storyline, you know trouble is on the way. No need to pray on it: we've brought you a new podcast on "Holy Strokes"! MP S04.E15: Oy! To The World
Just in time for Jane to decide she should try to mend fences with her antagonists at work, Jo goes soft and asks Richard not to go through with his plans to push her out of the business -- at least not so close to Christmas! Richard agrees, but doesn't consider whether he should put the damning paperwork into a drawer or cabinet that locks. Kimberly continues treating Sydney, giving her actually good advice on how to turn herself into the perfect doctor's wife for Michael; she also prescribes tranquilizers to help Sydney sleep, without talking her through the potential dangers of taking them. Having failed to find anything incriminating on Bobby, the FBI agents on his case try getting at him by intimidating Amanda, only to galvanize her against them and possibly all figures of authority. A trip to the doctor ends in bad news about Brooke's pregnancy, which she can't bring herself to tell Billy. Also present: Matt, Alan, and evidence that Jake is actually putting his loan shark loan to use on business expenses. Look, at this point is it even worth trying to figure out what's going on with Kimberly's whole legal situation? Apparently the administration at Wilshire Memorial has given up, because they've agreed to let her work there again -- as a psychiatric intern, but still. The hospital turns out to be the nexus of a lot of new drama: Bobby makes a gigantic anonymous gift, crediting Peter as the rainmaker; and Sydney keeps hanging around trying to determine whether Michael is cheating on her with Jane. Meanwhile, Jane is oblivious about Richard's plans to cut her out of the business, though he might be wavering on those given the sexy dreams he's been having about her lately. All the Armstrongs (plus Billy) return to Los Angeles to bury Hayley, whereupon Brooke finds out about his financial troubles -- and the SEC investigation he's apparently left all his employees to deal with following his death. The reading of his will changes everyone's immediate plans and launches Alison into a tailspin about how he actually felt about her. Matt -- also working at the hospital, less controversially than Kimberly -- treats an actor with whom he seems to have a particular rapport, IF YOU KNOW WHAT WE MEAN. And with all his cash still wherever Shelly buried it, Jake seeks out dangerous solutions to his problems. Don't fly off before listening to our podcast on "Two Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"! MP S04.E13: Hook, Line And Hayley
Once Amanda recovers from the shock of (a) seeing Bobby after seven years and (b) seeing the gun in his waistband, she agrees to let him explain himself: he still truly loves her, does not intend to kill her, and would never hurt her in any way. She's ready to say goodbye and part on friendly-ish terms...or so she says, but the single tear that falls down her cheek after her flashback to a night on the beach in Miami when he promised to get her out of marrying Jack tells the tale. Meanwhile, Peter is still trying to solidify his relationship with Amanda and isn't thrilled that she's spending any time with any other man, never mind one who's Mob-adjacent. Out in international waters, Hayley finally explains why they had to take their whirlwind second honeymoon under cover of night: he's trying to stay ahead of the SEC, and apparently thinks throwing all his incriminating papers in the ocean will solve all his problems because it's 1995 and no one has ever heard of "copies." He doesn't assume Alison will want to join him as he starts a new life far from L.A., but she does. Fortunately for her, it's not going to be a long commitment. Kimberly is not quite done with Vic yet, but the ordeal does clarify her thinking as regards her career. While Jane barrels ahead using Michael to get Richard back, Richard makes plans of his own. And Shelly continues messing with Jake from behind bars. Ahoy, mateys: it's our podcast on "Hook, Line And Hayley"! MP S04.E12: Kimberly Does L.A.
Between her great new radio gig and the removal of her wrist monitor, Kimberly is really feeling herself. And it turns out she'd like men to feel her too -- as many as she can get! She's so busy scoring that she maaaaaay not devote enough concern to Vic, who keeps calling the show to tell her how bad he thinks her advice is. However, she DOES take a break from her sexcapades to warn Sydney that receiving a gift of flowers from Michael means that he's cheating on her. He's not, exactly -- he's just lying and sneaking around with Jane, who's just using him to make Richard jealous. At least, that's the state of play...for now. Jake has been stewing over Matt's suspicions about Shelly's shadiness regarding the books, but when he confronts her, she shrugs off his worries and volunteers the password she thought she already gave him, no big deal! But Matt's not willing to drop the matter. While Bobby commences his project of following Amanda around Los Angeles looking for a chance to murder her, Amanda tries to stay away from Peter, but ultimately fails. And Alison moves the last of her stuff out of her apartment and into the manor just in time for Hayley to announce that he's got buyers on the hook, suddenly and despite not having said anything to Alison about it until they've toured the place. Seems weird but maybe this is just how rich people are??? We've done a podcast on "Kimberly Does L.A.," and we hope you'll listen! MP S04.E11: Free Kimmy
Remember when the Jo/Jane/Richard/Jake/Shelly situation was merely a love pentagon? WELL. Jane tries a power play on Jo upon her return, with Richard, to the studio after their Hawaii sojourn, leaving all of Jo's photography gear in the lobby and informing her that she's fired. Richard then informs Jane that in a 50/50 partnership, she can't unilaterally fire anyone. After seeing Jo and Richard looking happy at the surprise birthday party Sydney has thrown for Michael, Jane hatches a new plan for getting Richard back on the hook: she'll make him jealous by dating a professional guy! Maybe someone who's already been in love with her once! Little does she know that Michael and Sydney are back to liking each other for real...not that Jane would probably care. And Matt starts working at Shooters just in time for Jake to need help logging into Shelly's accounting system and show him how her setup is not as transparent as one might hope. Alison and Hayley hit up a Cancun resort he owns, and which is apparently in some kind of trouble, not that Hayley's telling Alison anything, forcing her to rely on eavesdropping. Things go from bad to worse when they return to L.A. and, in the course of a new demand from Brooke regarding her future child's inheritance, Hayley announces that he and Alison aren't having kids -- which is news to Alison. While Jack's remains are dispatched to Miami -- where we meet more of the Parezi family -- Amanda pulls away from Peter. Desperate to keep her, Peter tries to pull away from Kimberly, who's more determined than ever to secure her physical freedom. We hope you're free to join us for our podcast on "Free Kimmy"! MP S04.E10: El Syd
After Jack kicks off in the cold open, everyone who knew anything about the circumstances surrounding his death braces for possible consequences. Michael thinks he can delay the autopsy results from getting to Nick, Jack's lawyer. Peter ignores whatever Kimberly's up to so that he can support Amanda. But she's mostly just happy the only person she ever feared has died...until Sydney gathers both her bosses and Amanda for a sushi dinner, to tell them she has an incriminating tape of Amanda and Peter that she'll pass on to the authorities if Amanda doesn't give her half her share of Jack's estate. Brooke is too sick to accompany Billy on a business trip to Santa Barbara, so Alison arranges to take her place so that she can get some face time with Billy and decide whether she really does still love him, or if she's ready to move on and accept Hayley's weird afterthought of a wedding proposal. And due to a hiccup with their travel plans, they end up getting more time together than she'd hoped! Having broken up with Jake for good, Jo decides there's no reason not to join Richard on his "business" trip. And Michael puts a damper on Matt's med school acceptance celebration by revealing how it happened. You won't need a sword or horse to enjoy our podcast on "El Syd"! MP S04.E09: Amanda Unplugged
Inconveniently, Jack continues to live. Amanda is still keeping vigil at his bedside while also strategizing with Peter on how to get them both out of this, but when she tries to self-medicate with Halloween party shots, Peter intervenes...and then gets everything he wanted, if not quite the way he wanted it. At the same time, Sydney has determined that Peter and Amanda are doing something shady, and is disappointed when Michael tells her she can't use the blackmail material she acquired by secretly taping Peter and Amanda in Peter's office, over the phone. But perhaps Sydney has finally figured out she doesn't always have to listen to Michael? Jane decides she and Richard should go to Hawaii for an "inspiration shoot," to collect ideas for their next line. She starts to cool on the idea when he suggests that Jo come with them, rather than finding a local photographer, convinced Richard is just trying to maneuver himself into a romantic situation with Jo. She's right, and her calling him out does not remotely stop him from executing further maneuvers. Alison is not feeling entirely comfortable at Armstrong Manor, and only grows less so when she tries a locked door and Hayley orders her to stay away from that room. "Casually" asking Brooke about it leads Brooke to give her a key, and more fireworks ensue. Speaking of Brooke: she gets caught in her diaphragm scheming, but the question of parenthood remains open for the newlyweds. Matt's decision to re-enroll in medical school provides Michael with a new opportunity for manipulating his former neighbor. And Kimberly shows how far she will actually go to pursue a thrilling job offer. Plug IN your headphones and enjoy our podcast on "Amanda Unplugged"! MP S04.E08: Dial M For Melrose
We pick back up where we left off with the last episode: Amanda and Jack, tussling at his house. In the process, Jack ends up flying off a third-story balcony onto the hard floor of the foyer, and since Amanda doesn't think she can call the authorities, she enlists Peter to help her deal with the situation. His scheme to get Jack admitted to the hospital with a minimum of questions from other personnel seems to work, until Michael sees Peter and Amanda leaving Jack's room together and inserts himself. At the same time, Fake Henry keeps pestering Kimberly, while Kimberly keeps pestering Dr. Joyce Brothers on her apparently 24-hour-a-day radio show. Jake can't stop being jealous of the time Jo is spending with Richard, nor Jo of Shelly still hanging around. Hayley and Alison make their relationship official by telling Brooke and Billy they're in love -- but there's yet another level to which Hayley wants to take it. Finally (...in every sense of the word), Matt and his mother bury his dad, leaving them both to ponder what may be next for them. MP S04.E07: Let The Games Begin
Psychological torture is the order of the day: Brooke harasses Amanda by taking on Jack's new cable company as her latest client, and Jack lets Amanda know that if she tries to take too hard a line against him, he will retaliate by coming after her friends. Meanwhile, Peter tries to walk Kimberly through a therapeutic process that involves apologizing directly to all her bombing victims -- at a party celebrating the fact that she didn't succeed in killing them, no less -- and returning to the laundry room where she planted her explosives. Maybe this would work if it didn't coincide with Michael and Sydney's new project: deploying an actor who kind of looks like Henry to show up and talk to Kimberly the way the "real" Henry used to do. The Hart & Mancini crew, and Jake and Shelly, are now fully snarled up together in a romantic rat king: Jane has written off Jo for snitching on her to Richard while also trying to talk Richard into taking her back; and when Jo misses a loosely defined date with Jake because she's shooting Richard, Shelly seizes the opportunity to get too drunk to drive herself back to her new apartment, and toplessly hit on Jake when he takes her home. Matt's check-in with his parents about his latest legal issue leads to a new understanding between Matt and his dad...and just in the nick of time. And as Alison and Hayley continue spending time together, Brooke continues interfering. Put on your pads and cup for our podcast on "Let The Games Begin"! MP S04.E06: The Jane Mutiny
Now that Jack's told Amanda he tracked her down so they could officially get divorced, she's eager to get the process completed so that he can leave town; she doesn't even want any of his assets or their community property -- not even that big-ass painting!!! But as he keeps hanging around, she starts to worry that he's going to resume behaving in ways that made her fake her death to flee him in the first place. Elsewhere at D&D, Brooke is so focused on making Alison tell her exactly what's going on with her and Hayley that she's apparently forgotten that she's a VP now and as such has responsibilities she's supposed to fulfill -- like bringing in business. Panicking, she declares that she'll deliver her father's company as a client, forcing her to beg Alison to help her do it. When Hayley actually does come in as a client, however, he makes sure to do it in a way that elevates Alison and humiliates Brooke. Extremely improbably, "the medical board" has judged Kimberly sane enough to be released into Peter's care, with a monitor that, for some reason, goes on her wrist instead of her ankle. (Though Kimberly's also going to be living in Peter's guest room and assumes sex is going to be back on the menu, he stresses that his interest in her is purely platonic.) However, when Sydney and Michael find out Kimberly's no longer incarcerated -- and help themselves to her medical records -- they hatch a plan to get her committed again. Even though Jo seemed pretty unconcerned in the last episode when Jane blithely admitted she was marrying Richard despite the fact that she didn't love him, now it's really weighing on her conscience and forcing her to get back into their business. And after Dr. Hobbs agrees to a deposition in his countersuit against Matt, for defamation, he plays right into Tom's very sexy hands. All aboard for our podcast on "The Jane Mutiny"! MP S04.E05: Drawing Henry
Once Peter brings in a sketch artist to draw a portrait of Henry (fka Schmob) from Kimberly's description, he is determined to find out who he is -- a real person? a stand-in for someone else she knew? Kimberly can't summon the memory, so he calls her mother, who is clearly stricken at the sound of his name, and comes to L.A. to tell Kimberly the whole sordid story. Elsewhere, Peter gets subpoenaed -- along with Michael and Dr. Hobbs -- to testify in Matt's sexual discrimination case. (Once again, we must report, Matt does a poor job respecting lawyers' function in the legal system, including outside courtrooms.) Jack lets Brooke know he's in town, and that he's going to need her to co-operate with him on reuniting with Amanda. She tries to keep everything to herself, but when Billy follows her to a meeting with Jack -- assuming, reasonably, that she's cheating on him -- she actually tells him the truth, for once. At the same time, her father goes around her to Alison, hoping she will join him in breaking up Billy and Brooke. However, the more time she spends with Hayley, the less interested she seems in Billy. Richard leverages Jo's job security to get her to counsel Jane to accept his proposal, which Jo finds around her already packed schedule of being jealous of the time Jake is spending with Shelly. MP S04.E04: Simply Shocking
Since discovering Amanda PAREZI's Florida driver's license, Brooke evidently hasn't stopped thinking about what it could mean and how to use it to her advantage. So when she heads off to Miami to (as far as Billy knows) investigate a commercial real estate investment, she quickly turns up Amanda and Jack's wedding announcement and Jack's home address, where she meets the man himself and determines that his wife, Amanda, died five years ago. Brooke returns to L.A. to extort her way into a better job and there will probably be no further repercussions! At all! Oh, and while she was gone, Billy started to share her suspicions that Alison's eyesight had returned, and got Alison to come clean. Peter confides in Sydney that the reason he's so focused on keeping Kimberly out of detention is that he had a sister who was mentally ill, and was too young to have helped her when she was in crisis. Michael decides the best way to keep Kimberly from being released is to keep riling her up in her cell, and he's got a great idea how to do it: reunite with Sydney, bring her to jail, and make out with her in front of Kimberly! Meanwhile, Dr. Calvin Hobbs has no compunction gloating to Peter and Michael about his having fired Matt for being a [slur redacted]. Matt just wants to drink his problems away, but Michael encourages Matt to seek redress so that Hobbs will get fired and clear a path for Michael to replace him. Michael even refers the matter to a local LGBT advocacy group, but Matt doesn't want to pursue the case...or does he? Jane and Richard continue having the same fight -- Richard is annoyed that Jane is taking over so much of the business, and Jane is annoyed by his attachment to a dead woman -- which they briefly suspend so that he can propose and she can accept, just as long as he keeps it quiet until after the fashion show for their make-or-break spring line. And with Jo so wrapped up at the studio, she's missing a lot of developments between Jake and Shelly, from Shelly crashing at Jake's to Jake telling Shelly the truth about how Jess died to Shelly starting work as the new bookkeeper at Shooters. Jo wonders why Shelly would WANT to spend so much time with the man who killed...the man she thought she was just about to reconcile with. Hmmm, now so are we! MP S04.E03: Blind Ambition
Remember the last episode when Matt punched Paul at the hospital and his lawyer Alicia was like "Please don't" and he was like "Cool, cool," and we thought he understood why such actions would NOT be good for his case? Well, in THIS episode, he's just decided to wire himself up and try to maneuver Paul into confessing to all his crimes so that he can get it on tape. Alicia destroys the first, not-especially-incriminating recording Matt makes, telling him it's inadmissible anyway, and when Matt pushes back, she agrees that she shouldn't represent him anymore. Instead of taking this as a bad sign that he needs to sort himself out, Matt accepts an invitation from Paul to go over to the manse and just talk. Oh, MATT. Jane hires Jo to be Mackenzie Hart's in-house photographer, even boldly inviting Jo and Jake out for a celebratory dinner with Jane and Richard. Somehow, Jane did not foresee Richard using this occasion to bitch at Jane, through Jo, that Jane fired his photographer in order to free up the position for Jo. But when Jo later lays into Jake for failing to take her side, it does lead to a breakthrough for the two of them. Brooke is getting increasingly aggressive in her efforts to keep Billy away from Alison. Though Alison seems to be respecting Brooke's express orders to become more self-sufficient, Alison has her own agenda, and kicks it into a higher gear when her medical circumstances change. Peter urges Kimberly to put on a more convincing performance of criminal insanity when his hand-picked psychiatrist comes to assess her. Kimberly fails to win a psych ward Oscar on the day, but little does Peter know that it may not actually take much for her to start hearing voices...again. It's okay if you close your eyes -- that might just make your hearing more sensitive for our podcast on Melrose Place's 100th episode, "Blind Ambition"! MP S04.E02: Melrose Is Like A Box Of Chocolates
Things are starting to get back to normal-ish at the complex: with the place under construction, Amanda has arranged for the tenants in the intact apartments to billet the ones whose apartments were ruined...and invited herself to Sydney's place. This is only one of Sydney's problems this week, however: instead of talking to Jo, the only other person affected by Jess's death, Jake is self-medicating with booze and alienating everyone who loves him -- including Sydney, whom he fires when he judges her insufficiently festive at the bombing survivors' party he throws. Good thing Peter and Michael need a receptionist! Speaking of whom: while Michael remains skeptical of his motives, Peter continues trying to help Kimberly, mostly to no avail: Kimberly won't co-operate with a court psychiatrist's assessment of her sanity, and Amanda refuses his request that she not file stalking charges against Kimberly. Meanwhile, Matt doesn't help his case by confronting Paul at the hospital and punching him in front of a cafeteria's worth of witnesses. Alison, rooming with Jane, gets on board with Jane's plan for them both to get ahead in life by becoming totally obnoxious girlbosses, starting by getting Amanda to give her back her job at D&D. Brooke isn't happy to learn that this means she's actually going to be sharing a job with her mortal enemy, and impetuously quits: she doesn't need a job when her marriage has knocked down the last hurdle standing between her and her inheritance from her mother! And Jane's attempts to throw her weight around at the Mackenzie Hart offices earn more scorn from Richard. Grab a park bench and join us for our podcast on "Melrose Is Like A Box Of Chocolates"! MP S04.E01: Postmortem Madness
The Season 4 premiere picks up where the Season 3 finale left off: with Kimberly setting off an explosion at the Melrose Place apartment complex!!! In the immediate aftermath, we kind of just have to sort out who lived and died, but don't worry -- there are way more of the former than the latter. Peter has Kimberly (justifiably) committed to a psych ward; it doesn't seem like Schmob is still bothering her, but she also can't remember her part in the bombing or believe she actually could have done it. Billy and Brooke's marriage gets off to a rocky start when Billy asks to postpone the honeymoon due to, you know, all his friends who are injured -- most notably Alison, who has gone blind. It's probably only temporary, but she doesn't want Billy to know that. Matt is hurt by what he perceives as his parents' lack of support following his arrest on charges of capital murder, but does accept the fancy criminal lawyer they set him up with. Considering how much he hated Jess, and the reason the two of them were fighting at that construction site in the first place -- namely that Jess brutally attacked Jo -- Jake is being pretty pissy at Jo, the only other person in L.A. who is grieving Jess. And when Jane sees an opportunity for her career opening up thanks to the bombing, she doesn't really try to make it palatable for Richard, who finds her plans for the future of his company rather ghoulish.
