BH9 S01.E03: The Photo Shoot

Tori's wish to pay homage to the iconic "cuddle puddle" promo pic from the original show's second season runs into problems -- like a feud between Jason and the show's head writer, and a literal fire on the set. With Christine riding her to keep Fox's billion-dollar franchise on track, Tori must face her fear of confrontation, rise above Nate's doubts, and trek to Peru to retrieve the show's last holdout, Shannen. BH9 S01.E02: The Pitch

Following her brilliant idea at the end of "The Pitch," Tori brings Jennie to pitch Fox on a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot. They're ready to buy it in the room on the assumption that everyone in the cast wants to do it...so Tori has to convince everyone that they want to do it. Everyone has both demands and messy personal issues, so will Tori be able to channel her late father's producing talent and pull it off? Find out with our podcast on "The Pitch"! BH9 S01.E01: The Reunion

All your (extant) old friends from the original cast of Beverly Hills, 90210 are back...to play heightened, "comic" versions of themselves. In some cases, the comedy derives from real issues they're facing, like financial difficulties (Tori), a shiftless husband (Tori again), and a widely reported fall into a hibachi (guess who). Others have made up fake problems, like being outshone by a famous wife who's a pop star (Brian) or getting cuckolded by a fitness model wife (Ian). Is it actually funny? Is it, if not funny, at least interesting??? We'll break it down in our podcast on "The Reunion"! MP S01.E10: Burned

Billy has the bad luck to take a wrong turn in south central Los Angeles, get blocked in a dead end by a Cadillac full of toughs, and gets his cab beaten with baseball bats. He refuses to accept the cheery view of the situation as presented by the detective on his case, Alison, and all his neighbors, which is that he wasn't physically harmed; instead, he's focused on the part where the detective declines to give him false hope about the likelihood that the perps will be apprehended, and starts making sweeping racist statements about the neighbourhood where the incident occurred; challenged by Rhonda not to, you know, spew hate speech all over the courtyard, he refuses to back down and lies to Alison -- for the second time in two episodes -- to get her to lend him her car so that he and Jake can go vigilanting in hopes of bringing the cops a plate number. Since the episode is airing just a few months after the 1992 L.A. uprising, Rhonda is also moved to confront her own privilege as a black person insulated by a comfortable suburban upbringing, and decides to try to raise Billy's consciousness as well as her own. Also: it's Jake's birthday! But his place of honour is quickly usurped by the arrival of his blowsy mother Stella, trying to make up for all her failings in Jake's youth and also to crash on his couch for a while and maybe move to Los Angeles permanently. Sandy is drawn to Stella and tries to broker peace between mother and son. Speaking of parenthood: Jane's pregnancy is far enough along for her to enroll herself and Michael in a parenting class; Michael thinks it's bullshit and makes sure everyone knows. BH S10.E19: I Will Be Your Father Figure

Dylan and Steve haven't gotten anywhere trying to get information about "Eddie Waitkus" from his fellow airline passengers, so Dylan, unemployed Kelly, and client-cold-calling wash-out Matt all go to the airport to try to interrogate "Eddie's flight crew. One decides to ignore confidentiality and give Dylan a tip on the town in Arizona she's heard Eddie mention; Kelly poses as Eddie's wife to get a copy of the family's cable bill with their address on it; and Kelly and Dylan both go to stake out the house. But when Dylan sees Eddie/Jack come home to his loving wife and son, will he lose his nerve to confront his father about...totally being alive? Noah is slightly injured from his leap through the beach apartment window, and now sober enough to be embarrassed about it. While Donna continues monitoring his mental state, David monitors hers, and Camille gets increasingly irritated by the fact that this arrangement leaves no one to care for her. Steve's shitty brother Randy comes back for spring break, and we learn he's attending Amherst (ha) and studying pre-med (ha HA!). He's snitty about Steve and Janet's life as settled, married parents, which allows him to deflect their questions about his own studies, but what could he possibly have to hide? MP S01.E09: Responsibly Yours

Billy is drawn to the butt of a woman trying to fix her busted car. Her name is Dawn, and has more to recommend her than just her butt; Billy likes her even more when he finds out she's a standup comic, and drags his friends along to her bringer show. He's hinting around that he'd like her to invite him in when...the door opens and he sees why she's not: Dawn has a son. Billy gets way too serious way too fast, lying to Alison to get her to loan him money so that he can pass it on to Dawn to fix her car. Alison keeps trying to get Billy to understand there's more to parenting than taking the kid to Magic Mountain, but it takes him walking into the middle of a vicious fight between Dawn and her ex to make him understand she might be right. BH S10.E18: Eddie Waitkus

A news report Dylan might never have even registered if he wasn't kicking Steve's ass at Rock And Roll Jeopardy so bad that Steve had to start flipping channels reveals something shocking: Dylan's dead dad Jack has an exact double, whose plane just had an emergency landing! No one wants to believe Dylan's suspicions that Jack might actually be alive -- not his friends, and certainly not FBI agent/Jack's former fiancée, Christine -- but Dylan can't let it go. David gets into a STUFFy situation with Camille due to a misinterpreted conversation about fur (really), leading him to panic about his sexual prowess (probably justified) in which he involves all his friends (not something Camille signed on for). At the same time, Donna is tanking her possible relationship with Beat printer Irv because she feels obligated to serve as Noah's one and only source of emotional support. And with just three days to work on the strategy to ensure that gay students' civil rights are violated in California public schools, Kelly must decide whether she wants to earn a living by ruining people's lives. MP S01.E08: Lonely Hearts

Sandy and Rhonda are goofing around trying on hats when Jackie Harris's boyfriend Fisher (where my Roseanne-heads at) happens by and finds her instantly irresistible. He doesn't seem to notice that they're not clicking and insists on following her back to the complex, where he continues being totally unable to pick up on social cues like what it actually means when someone declines further dates because her life is "really complicated right now." Then he shows up at the pool the next day and starts ingratiating himself to all of Sandy's roommates, who basically order her to give him a chance, up to and including when he starts leaving creepy messages on her answering machine. Jake, of course, decides that the solution is for him to insert himself (and his fists). While everyone else is refusing to pick up on warning signs that a dude is a straight-up stalker, Alison is in denial about whether she needs to get rid of her beloved old car, Betsy. (Yes, that's what passes for a B-plot at this point in the show's run.) Don't make us show up at your front door and beg you to listen to our podcast on "Lonely Hearts"! BH S10.E17: Doc Martin

When we last saw Dr. Martin, he was lying on the floor at his house...and he never got up, because he was dead. Everyone is upset about it, though only Kelly and David manage to fight through their grief and concern for Donna to suggest that Gina killed Dr. Martin by making him exercise as though he, a CARDIAC SURGEON, wasn't sure how much exertion was safe for him. Between their shitty speculation and Kelly's accusation that Dylan took unnecessary risks during Noah's kidnapping because he was chasing an adrenaline rush, Dylan and Gina both decide they have no further need to remain in Los Angeles after Dr. Martin's funeral, and start saying their goodbyes. Matt's suspension having apparently lost him every last one of his clients, Kelly is more motivated than ever to sign on with the big PR firm our old friend Pia has been recruiting her to join -- and what luck, her first assignment is to work on a ballot initiative regarding gay clubs in public high schools, because surely any company Kelly would work for will absolutely be on the progressive side of the matter! Right??? Following his ordeal with Shane, Noah is drinking again, including in secret, and making the mistake of sharing his suicidal thoughts with David, who can't even be bothered to pretend to care. MP S01.E07: My Way

Sandy does her mentor Charles Nelson Reilly proud by nailing her audition for a horror movie and booking the part. Naturally, her friends and neighbours are thrilled for her, but when she has to blow off their surprise party for a networking bash in the Hollywood Hills, everyone starts being a little less thrilled for her. Sandy's own excitement starts to ebb when she gets to the set and finds out the director wants to shoot her topless. Billy realizes he can't blow off his father's birthday party, largely because his sisters already decided to, so he tries to minimize the hassle his dad is going to give him about his career by bringing Alison (though he's also kind of forced to given that he's told his parents she's his girlfriend). Instead of standing firm with his father about pursuing his writing, Billy decides to honour the deal they'd made, and spend a year working in the family furniture store, though maybe his father wouldn't have pushed it if he'd known Billy planned to bitch about it the whole time. Speaking of furniture: Michael injures himself trying to move a dresser, and overestimates his ability to use his body while it's injured, finally admitting to Jane that he's trying to keep her from having to exert herself in any way during her pregnancy. BH S10.E16: The Final Proof

Since no one would have noticed otherwise, Josie has to come tell Dylan that Shane kidnapped Noah. And since Dylan is an idiot, he decides not to involve the police at all in delivering the full $1 million ransom Shane is demanding and co-operates with Josie in arranging for the handoff, because who could be more trustworthy than the drug dealer whose debt is the reason Shane needs the money in the first place? Donna lingers around the edges as Dr. Martin, freed by Felice's trip out of town, reaches out to Gina for the first time since Christmas. A dinner date gets awkward, but Gina and Dr. Martin keep trying; she's even calling him "Dad"! Surely their relationship can only keep getting better for the rest of one of their lives! Donna's much more involved as Matt signs himself and Kelly up for Lovers' Lane, a Newlywed Game ripoff with a cash prize of $25,000. Ill-timed food poisoning for Kelly requires a willing second to play her on TV, and STUFF ensues. David has the misfortune of having started dating someone a few days before Valentine's Day, and gets way too obsessive about making the occasion perfect for Camille -- even more so after her ex stalks her to Donna's store. MP S01.E06: Second Chances

When Alison literally ends a poker party by boring everyone with tales of her college cramming techniques, Jake is the only one intrigued...because it turns out he's about to take the GED exam and would like her help studying; he'd also like her to keep this whole project a secret from the rest of the nitwits in the complex, which of course means that when a bunch of them catch Alison coming out of Jake's apartment at 7 AM on a Saturday having fallen asleep amongst the books, they all jump to the wrong conclusion and Alison is too scrupulous to correct them. Billy and Sandy are united in not even caring if Jake and Alison are hooking up! They don't care at all!!! Rhonda is strangely ambivalent about attending a performance by a dance company featuring her old friend, Theresa. Matt gets the whole story over dinner with both of them: Rhonda and Theresa were both up for a spot in the company, but Rhonda broke her foot and missed the audition, and now she teaches Cardio Funk while Theresa enthralls audiences as a modern dancer. Theresa and Matt both urge Rhonda to try out for a slot the company has open now, but the more time Rhonda and Theresa spend together, the more obvious it is that there is still a lot of mutual resentment between them. BH S10.E15: Fertile Ground

A visit from Matt's brother Patrick and sister-in-law Juliane couldn't come at a better time, what with both him and Kelly suddenly having so much time on their hands. But Matt's not exactly excited for their arrival, since Patrick's a big finance bro who's always been critical of Matt. Patrick might be easier to get along with now, though, since he needs to ask a big favour: he's sterile, and would like Matt to donate sperm so that Patrick and Juliane may have a baby. Do we even need to say Kelly is a bitch about it? Donna might not go so far as to say Kelly is being a bitch about backing out of the new lease on the store, but she's terrified about having to network on her own. Turns out she should be, since her instincts suck, and she ends up dating a nerdy buyer so that he'll order some of her new sweaters. David's having much better luck, connecting with a fashion journalist (improbably) profiling Donna. Meanwhile, Noah's still embroiled with Josie and her aggro brother Shane, who aren't any easier to get along with now that Josie's pretty sure that if she doesn't come up with the $90,000 she owes her dealer for flushed coke, he's going to kill her. Noah doesn't really take their concerns seriously, since he's also still embroiled with Steve and Janet's nanny Darby, and required to do the emotional labour of assuring Steve that even if Darby isn't constantly talking about her one-night-stand with Steve, he's definitely probably the best she ever had. Having lost out on her chance to be a gym spokesmodel thanks to the "mix-up" that ended with her getting arrested on drug charges, Gina needs a job, and Dylan has a connection: a hotel regular named Russell who's a big wig at the "Super Sports Channel." Before he'll consider her, though, Russell needs her to help whip his lazy son Michael into shape for his school's big dance, three days hence. Michael knows his dad disdains him, and confides in Gina that their relationship has been hard ever since his mother's death. Seeing in Russell shades of taskmaster Bobbie, Gina decides to be Michael's hero. We discuss it all in our podcast on "Fertile Ground"! MP S01.E05: Leap Of Faith

Remember that super-hot chili dog seduction (https://www.againwiththis90210.com/mp103) Michael pulled off a couple of episodes ago? Well, it turns out that hot dog really made Jane lose control, because now she's accidentally pregnant. Attempts to warm Michael up on the idea of parenthood this early in his hospital internship fail, as he convinces her that they owe it to themselves to spend a few years fulfilling their own professional aspirations before adding a child to the mix, and she decides to find out what's involved in getting an abortion without ever telling him she was pregnant at all. In the process, she makes the mistake of telling Rhonda, who can't help opening her big mouth to Michael. Billy has, improbably, landed a column at a free weekly magazine (at $25 a pop: still seems high). Realizing he doesn't actually have any interesting life experiences to fill inches with, he decides to try bungee-jumping, forcing his subconscious to remind him, in a dream, that he's desperately afraid of heights. BH S10.E14: I’m Using You ‘Cause I Like You

Donna and David, sick of being single, decide to try their luck at getting set up with people in Matt's Rolodex -- though Donna ends up passing when a random guy wanders into the store and asks her out. Have her romantic instincts sharpened during her journey of celibacy and self-improvement? Meanwhile, David's date, a lawyer named Chrissy, is everything he could possibly want in a woman, and he's so eager to open up to her that he tells her all about Matt's new client and the worker's comp settlement Matt is pursuing on his behalf. But whoops, Chrissy knows Matt is under suspension, and reminds him that she's on the bar association's ethics committee. Will Matt heed this warning, or is he guided by the same terrible judgment that got him suspended in the first place? Kelly is also in the middle of a career crisis -- the same one she's been in for months, not knowing if running a store is actually her passion, or if she just wants to hang around because she's not ready to start losing touch with her...friends from not just high school but also elementary school. You'd think Dylan would make this process easy by being a prick to her, but as we know, this just makes him more attractive to her. Gina is compelled to spend time with him since he and Noah and Noah's new party pals are going to cool club openings where Jennifer Lopez compliments her shoes (offscreen, OBVIOUSLY). But she has doubts about Noah's sexiest AND cokiest friend, Josie. When Noah manages to get out of bed before noon, he happens by the Peach Pit while Steve and Janet are orienting their new nanny, Darby, and immediately hits on her. Will Noah actually heed Steve's orders that Noah keep his hands off her? Find out with our podcast on "I'm Using You 'Cause I Like You"! MP S01.E04: For Love Or Money

Alison is getting into a flirtation with Rick (Gremlins's Zach Galligan!), the kid from the mailroom with the excellent taste in breakfast carbs. Except, he's not just the kid from the mailroom; he's also the son of a big D&D sunscreen client. When Alison shares one of her campaign concepts over dinner, he can't resist passing it off as his own and defensively claiming to have had it before she mentioned it to him. Alison complains to a higher-up, who gives Alison a chance to present ideas with Rick -- and since Rick apparently doesn't have any ideas of his own, it's a perfect opportunity for her to shiv him. But will she? Jake, still (always) hard up for money, drops in on a fancy Italian café; while failing to learn how to use the espresso machine, he's accosted by Perry, a flame from his past. The two of them used to run short cons together, and it turns out she still is: she's passing herself off as an art dealer, and could use Jake as the face of her newest discovery when she tries to sell "his" work (actually just a bunch of splatters and butt prints). Jake's integrity finds itself at war with his limited financial prospects, again. Gay Matt finds the halfway house budget slashed again, and needs volunteers to help him prepare meals for residents. Rhonda enthusiastically signs herself up for a shift, only to have to take it back just a couple of hours before she's supposed to start. Will Rhonda and Gay Matt's friendship survive her flaking? BH S10.E13: Tainted Love

Matt and Kelly are joyously affianced for about five minutes before a crisis strikes: Matt's rich client, Mr. Behr, decides to settle his lawsuit, meaning he'll no longer need Matt on retainer. Unfortunately, Matt immediately turned around and spent that retainer on Kelly's ring. Gina, hired back on as Matt's assistant, goes to the only rich person she's still talking to and who'll give her $15,000, no questions asked. However, Matt's smart enough to figure out where she got it, and Dylan's smart enough to figure out whom it's for, and the dick-measuring contest has to go into triple overtime. What will Kelly do when Matt comes clean? And will Dylan get his shit together in time for Maddy's christening?! Noah and Donna are embarking on single life in rather different ways: Noah has made a whole new party posse and is drinking himself into oblivion nightly, while Donna decides to take David's advice and give Java Hut manager Mark a chance to take her out. MP S01.E03: Lost & Found

After weeks of vacillation between pushing Kelly away and letting her hook him again with her youthful feminine wiles, Jake finally decides to cut things off with her definitively. Because it's a soap, this happens not with an honest conversation and/or appeal to the criminal code, but through moderate subterfuge Kelly might just be too inexperienced to see through. When Michael has to punk out on his plans to celebrate his and Jane's three-month anniversary (no) of moving to L.A. (why?), she lets her female neighbours talk her into enjoying a night out on her own. Alas, this soon escalates to a screwball plan to pass herself off as a single woman and prove she can still pick up dudes, in the course of which she loses her heirloom wedding ring. Billy has read about seven-figure screenplay sales and therefore abandoned his plans to be a novelist and written a script instead. Has he ever done so before? No. Is he still confident enough to drop it off with prospective agents the day after finishing it? Well, he's a white man, so: yes. BH S10.E12: Nine Yolks Whipped Lightly

Dr. and Mrs. Martin are, under some pressure from Donna, trying to integrate Gina into their lives -- which, in the immediate future, means their Christmas festivities. Of course she's invited to the family celebration on Christmas Day, but though Donna is hot for Gina to come to the Martins' big Christmas Eve party, her parents are still worried about how they'd introduce Gina to all their boring old judgmental friends. When Gina lets them off the hook by saying she doesn't want to attend, Felice finds her at the hotel to bust out the old checkbook and buy Gina a better attitude. At the same time, Donna is trying to forgive not just her parents' lies but Noah's, because it turns out his constant assertions that he's "over" causing the death of his fiancée aren't getting Donna there any faster. Despite her attempts to get herself out of it, Kelly is still in a love triangle with Matt, the steady lawyer who will apparently put up with all her crap, and Dylan, the hothead who'll punch a cranky neighbor and then pay him off not to press charges. Whichever will she find more appealing for the long run?! Finally, a chance encounter at a Christmas tree lot reminds us all that Janet's still estranged from her parents, like to the point where they don't even know their grandchild has been born. MP S01.E02: Friends & Lovers

We're so early in the run of Melrose Place that the Mancinis are having the kind of banal problems that any married couple might have: are they past the romance phase of their relationship? Can they survive the challenges of Michael's busy schedule as a doctor and an apartment building manager? Can he really have forgotten the moment he knew he was in love with Jane? As a counterpoint to how things are between partners who are settled, we have Billy, who takes a gig as a cab driver, where his very first fare is a woman named Marcy who has nothing better to do than hang out with Billy marveling at how much they have in common and imposing herself on his increasingly testy roommate. Billy very quickly moves from defending whatever he and Marcy have against Alison's judgmental glares to realizing that Marcy is way too into him way too fast. Jake is still unemployed, and taking his frustrations out on everyone within yelling distance, from Michael (who hasn't fixed Jake's hot water despite weeks' worth of complaints) to a bureaucrat at the unemployment office to Kelly, who has the gall to bail him out when causing a disturbance at a state agency gets him arrested. This once again forces the question of what, exactly, is going on between them, and while he has no problem telling Billy to be honest with the girl he doesn't actually want to be with, he still can't take his own advice when it comes to this one blonde teen. BH S10.E11: Sibling Revelry

Donna has managed to avoid telling Gina the truth about her biological parentage for days -- weeks longer than any dumb baby should be expected to -- and finally finds a quiet moment to get Gina alone and spill it. Gina is, of course, horrified; she tells Donna she hates her; tells David she wants to be alone; then tells Dylan she doesn't want to be alone. Dylan is in her room when David comes by, and when he stomps off in such a huff that both Gina and Dylan follow him to try to explain, David gets a little too physical than he probably should while he's anywhere near the valet stand. But David and Gina aren't the only ones Dylan's busting up: he also buys Kelly a painting she likes, sending Matt into more paroxysms of insecurity when he does a little investigating, finds out that it cost $16,000, and gives Kelly the 5000th ultimatum of their relationship. When Donna can't shut up about how important it is to be honest and not to keep shameful secrets, Noah finally admits that the reason he's not interested in attending a Harvard alumni party is that he's totally not a Harvard alumnus, at all. He asks her not to tell Kelly about it, and this seems to be the thing that finally causes Donna to wonder if he's actually the right guy for her? Elsewhere, Steve and Janet bring Maddy home from the hospital, which cues Steve to become an overprotective first-time parent cliche. We take you through in our podcast on "Sibling Revelry"! MP S01.E01: Pilot

Beverly Hills, 90210's back door opens onto Melrose Place, a hip apartment complex occupied by a demographically diverse group of cool twentysomethings with gritty problems of the sort the West Beverly High gang could scarcely imagine. Jake tries his best to get rid of Kelly by telling her not that "dating" her would be a literal crime, but that he's stressed about where his next job is coming from. This doesn't actually work, as she continues stalking him until Donna, David, and Steve are all moved to follow her on her date (at Shooters, oy) to try to embarrass her into getting a grip. Alison, whose old roommate has fled in the night and stuck her with the whole month's rent, scrambles to replace her; circumstances (a bunch of terrible applicants) force her to accept her first ever male roommate -- aspiring writer Billy. Managing his guy-ness while also navigating the "mentorship" of a D&D exec make this a very stressful few days for the pride of the University of Wisconsin. Rounding out the cast, we meet Jane and Michael, who try to keep the spark of their marriage alive despite the demands of his career as a hospital resident; Rhonda, a Cardio Funk instructor more than a little desperate to stop being single; Sandy, a southern-belle actress who mostly exists here to needle Jake about his jailbait girlfriend; and Gay Matt, who is gay. BH S10.E09: Family Tree & What’s In A Name?

Jackie and Mel's relationship seems to be over for realsies this time, and even though our main cast are all well into their twenties, almost all of them are affected. Matt is representing Jackie in the separation and custody proceedings, so he has Kelly in his ear trying to make sure Erin is shielded, as much as possible, from the fallout. Her general bad mood also has her bristling against her new roommate Noah and overreacting to his intrusions. Jackie also reveals that Gina was the one who told her about Mel's strip party attendance after he quit paying her hush money, which puts her on the outs with most members of the gang -- particularly David, who believes her denials until Mel confirms it. Dylan continues inserting himself into Andrew's career crisis, braying at community center co-director Patsy and trying to get Andrew reinstated by threatening to withdraw his financial support. Surprise! This makes things worse. Steve and Janet go on a STUFF-stuffed honeymoon, which (no surprise!) ends with her water breaking six weeks early. Because this is a TV show, her delivery turns dramatic, requiring an emergency c-section that results in a preemie who has to go on a respirator in the NICU. Then, because it's a double episode, we must continue following everyone's Thanksgiving plans. Donna buys a genealogy CD-Rom to make a family tree for Steve and Janet. Curious about her own origins, she stumbles upon her father's vital statistics and learns that...he is Gina's biological father. Gina herself is trying to navigate her breakup with Dylan and David's ongoing touchiness about feelings she may or may not still have for her ex. Said ex has thrown himself into the center's Thanksgiving celebration, and ropes Kelly into helping, to Matt's dismay. Will Steve and Janet's baby make it through the holiday? BH S10.E08: Baby, You Can Drive My Car

Everyone's in...kind of a bad mood. Kelly's pissed off that Mel's interest in exotic dancers has broken up his relationship with her mother, again, and blames Noah for putting strange breasts in Mel's eyeline. Dylan's annoyed that Andrew from the community center keeps bugging him to volunteer no matter how much money Dylan throws at him to shut him up; his attitude doesn't really improve when he and Andrew are beaten up by homophobes and Andrew won't let Dylan browbeat him into participating in the investigation because Andrew actually is gay, and isn't out at work And Janet's increasingly anxious about how far behind she is both in setting up the baby's nursery and planning her wedding. Steve comes up with an idea: he and Janet send all their friends on what they keep calling a scavenger hunt but is actually more of a treasure hunt; there's a party at the end that will roll up all the showers and bachelor/ette events they'd have to stage separately otherwise. Friction between participants keeps causing teams to break up -- Noah peels off from Kelly, who's being a bitch; Dylan wearies of Gina's concern about a stray dog they pass on the street -- but they do all make it to the "party," which the affianced have somewhat misrepresented, and which ends well for exactly one of the show's many couples. BH S10.E07: Laying Pipe

Faith has been part of Janet's upbringing, and she wants to continue the tradition with her own future child. A laudable notion, except that she and Steve have decided their child's godparents should be Dylan and Kelly, and don't withdraw the offer even after Kelly and Dylan pretty much openly act like they think the whole idea is dumb. Still, they do agree to go to Ojai to see Steve and Janet's future wedding site with them, meet Janet's pastor, and flirt with each other like we haven't seen them do in a while. At the same time, David's back in Los Angeles negotiating the sale of Steve's Corvette (so that he can start his new life behind the wheel of a minivan), and doing some flirting of his own with the buyer: a performance artist named Marta. Gina's also in L.A., accepting extortion payments from Mel in the form of vastly overpriced training sessions, until she overhears a phone call between Kelly and Matt in which Kelly announces that she's going to spend the night in Ojai with Dylan to see the "pink moment" at sunset; Gina decides she would like to see it herself, and leaves Matt to wait by the phone with Walter Hawkins to find out if Pete's execution's going to be commuted by the governor. After Donna has an extremely brief interaction with a homeless man whose courtyard sleep she disturbs, she is the one who's disturbed when he dies shortly afterward. Donna undertakes the project of finding out who he was and honouring his memory, while Noah tags along to take Donna's need to canonize the guy very personally. BH S10.E06: 80’s Night

A convicted murderer is on his last appeal -- and apparently his legal fund is down to its last dollar, because he's hired Matt to represent him and get his death sentence overturned. Kelly is very supportive of Matt's efforts of behalf of his client until she finds out the man also raped his victim before killing her, whereupon she starts taking it personally, which she was already primed to do both because she is her and because her dead rapist's parents have recently visited her to forgive her, and to ask her to forgive them for raising a criminal who assaulted her. What are Kelly's principles? It's a fair question! (For which we don't have an answer.) Gina and Noah are still making tons of money with the Peach Pit After Dark After Darker, but at least one of their neighbours has determined that they're staying open two hours longer than is permitted, and before long, they're getting raided by the cops -- and on a night when Mel Silver is enjoying a lap dance, no less! Gina helps him escape arrest (Noah and Donna aren't so lucky, and go to jail), and mere minutes after promising Dylan she's done lying to him, she's sneaking off to work a crooked new angle with Mel. Speaking of the sleazy Silvers: David is more of a pig than ever, escalating to phoning the girlfriend of a caller named Tony and, over Tony's objections, dumping her on his behalf. All Dave's friends are disgusted by his new "character" (Tony's not thrilled either), but David insists that his amazing ratings are all that matter and that he's not responsible for anything his listeners might do. And after taking up the spotlight for the past few episodes, Steve and Janet are back in the plot cellar, where Janet is excited to realize her college dream of playing bass in a band and Steve is concerned that she's being irresponsible and juvenile. BH S10.E05: The Loo-Ouch

Now that Janet's finally accepted Steve's proposal, it's time for them to tackle the matter they've been putting off: telling their parents all their news. The Sosnas are even less thrilled about Steve than they were before he knocked up their daughter; Rush is only marginally happier about it, though his acceptance comes with a lot of casual racism. Things come to a head at the couple's engagement party, where Steve's attempt to conceal his (absent) mother's sexuality by passing off her (present) girlfriend as his sister somehow backfires disastrously! Meanwhile, Matt and Noah agree that the generous play would be for one of them to move out of the Walsh house so that Steve and Janet can turn the emptied room into a nursery, but neither of their girlfriends is quite ready to commit to shacking up with them. David can't stop failing in his attempts to prove to Robyn that he isn't a trifling jerk -- that's just the guy he plays on the radio! A chance encounter with a strip club manager convinces Gina that the best way for her and Noah to earn a little extra pocket money is to hire some exotic dancers for secret After Dark after-hours peeler parties. BH S10.E04: A Fine Mess

Janet's "no" on Steve's shotgun marriage proposal apparently was not the last word on the matter. The guys (minus Matt) rally around Steve to try to workshop a proposal Janet will accept, while the ladies (minus Gina) urge Janet to change her mind. In the process, though, Matt reveals that he is kind of dubious about the whole institution these days, and Kelly is a bitch about it in multiple conversations and locations, including on the dance floor. Will Janet decide she can put aside her fear of Steve's special brand of messiness? Will Matt let Kelly beat him into submission on yet another issue? Matt and Kelly aren't the only ones fighting at the club: Donna runs afoul of Noah when she suggests he book a band without disclosing her personal connection to one of its members, while David's latest romantic prospect Robyn gets turned into radio content without her consent. Dylan decides his capacious hotel suite is too small for both himself and Gina, but the solution he comes up with to keep her off the shag carpets of Reseda may not work for her. BH S10.E03: You Better Work

Since Now Wear This has been closed ever since that homicide Kelly inconsiderately committed in it, the time has come for a big, splashy grand reopening -- which, due to reasons we never learn, Donna and Kelly have not decided to peg to the launch of Donna's menswear line. But never mind: "the buyers" from "New York" are coming four days early, so Donna's going to have to sew like she's never sewn before. Meanwhile, Gina is still holding a grudge against Princess Kelly, messing with her and Matt by "forgetting" to pass on Kelly's messages. Matt makes them agree to be civil for his sake, but Kelly makes that difficult by not learning her lesson and leaving a message on Matt's office answering machine about her growing doubts that running Now Wear This is where her career passions really lie. Obviously, Gina hears this before Matt does, and just as obviously, she "innocently" relays the news of Kelly's itchy feet to Donna to mess with their personal and professional relationship. Donna and Kelly are so desperate for extra hands that they can't refuse Gina's help after Matt has drafted her to assist in the menswear launch, and so dumb they don't foresee any potential issues in leaving her alone with a whole box of fashion show invitations. When Gina keeps the most important one and sets it on fire, a very predictable series of calamities ensues, culminating in the worst disaster of all: the gang dudes walking Donna's runway in open-toed slides. Dylan makes good on his pledge to Lucy, applying to resume his studies at CU. Unfortunately, CU thinks he is bullshit, and Dylan finds admission isn't something he can charm, bully, or buy his way into. After avoiding Janet for several days, Steve's exposure to nature documentaries convinces him that he is willing to father his child. He then proceeds to freak out, then overcompensate, and generally make Janet long for the days when he wasn't letting her down in her presence. BH S10.E02: Let’s Eat Cake

Steve has noticed that Janet's busting out of her bodices while also spending less time with him, and jumps to the conclusion that she's acquired some breast implants in anticipation of dumping his ass. Eventually she gets sufficiently annoyed with his hostility to admit that she's pregnant...whereupon Steve disappoints both Kelly's expectations and ours by acting like a real dick about it. It's also David's birthday, and for obvious reasons, Donna's left Gina off the guest list for the surprise party she's planning for him. (One suspects that Donna's come up with the idea of a surprise party at the club in order to force Noah to talk to her about logistics, if nothing else, but he's as sick of her shit, and her apologies, as we are.) When Gina finds out about the party, she assumes Dylan will also be sitting it out, and is stunned to learn that while the gang is punishing for boning him, they're not punishing HIM for boning HER. She develops a scheme to derail the party plans, which we assume Dylan wouldn't twig to even if he weren't caught up being a sponsor (lol) to Lucy, another current drug abuser who grew up in the hotel. Matt is still trying to reassure Kelly that he doesn't feel different about her since her rape, without seeming to understand that she feels different about her, and therefore that sex with him is not at the top of her to-do list (as it were). BH S10.E01: The Phantom Menace

Time for the payoff of the Season 9 finale cliffhanger: yes, some of the bullets Kelly shot actually ended up in Joe, and he is dead. Everyone springs into action: Matt starts defending Kelly against possible homicide charges; Dylan starts getting defensive, somehow, about his choice to give Kelly an unlicensed, unregistered firearm that went on to be used to kill someone; and Steve and Janet start bickering about whether Kelly's rapist really deserved incarceration or death. The drama surrounding Kelly's arrest hasn't distracted David from his anger at Dylan, which leads him to kick Dylan out of their house and back into the Beverly Royale Hotel -- you know, where we all remember Dylan living in high school? When everyone sees Gina on a TV news report referring to Kelly as her roommate who killed someone (which is...literally what Kelly is), Donna adds that to her resentment of Gina for sleeping with Dylan again -- way to tattle, David -- and kicks her out of the beach apartment. Does Kelly get charged with murder? Does Dylan let Gina move into his phat hotel pad? And what is making Janet so moody? We discuss it all in our podcast on "The Phantom Menace"! BH S09.E26: That’s The Guy

Kelly continues pushing down her anger and fear following her sexual assault, though it apparently helps her cope to keep the gun Dylan gave her in her purse. (And let's face it: if a mishap took out a Peach Pit After Dark patron, would it really be the worst thing?) At least Dylan and Matt are managing not to hold their pissing contests about which of them is better qualified to help her through this ordeal in her presence. Dylan's efforts at helping track down Kelly's assailant are interrupted by his conflicted feelings about the closeness growing between Gina and David, which he handles as expected, which is to say, poorly and immaturely. She doesn't exactly cover herself with glory either, but she does cover herself with...something! Noah finally figures out that Donna's hiding something from him and dumps her ass. While she's ignoring his calls, Wayne makes himself available, and one lobster dinner later, Donna's putting a third notch on her bedpost. The next morning, she's barely had a chance to come to terms with the news that Wayne is still leaving town as planned when Noah shows up to discover her with an unbuttoned Wayne and throw a shit fit about it. Finally, learning that the Beat is in the black only revives Janet's doubts about whether she's shaming the field of journalism by working there. BH S09.E25: Agony

A remarkable photo in the Beat draws the attention of the Chronicle's art critic. And since Steve is the photographer in question, he leans into his new status as an artist to impress Janet, ending up with more grass in his teeth than good shots on his film. Donna continues dithering between her lingering feelings of love (or obligation, depending on your perspective) for Noah and her burning lust for Wayne. But can she actually allow herself to try to separate sex from feelings? This is a question she keeps bringing to Kelly, despite the very obvious signals Kelly is sending that she is going through some serious shit right now. After taking herself to Cedars, talking to a detective, and going through a rape exam, Kelly tries to keep her assault a secret, but eventually cracks under questioning by Dylan. His efforts to support her only arouse suspicion from Gina, for obvious reasons, but also from David, who's now considering taking a run at Gina himself. The latest round of Dylan/Kelly drama distracts Gina from her efforts to get cast in a touring ice show, and pushing her bulimia to a crisis point. BH S09.E24: Dog’s Best Friend

As the Beverly Beat's mandate strays further and further from journalism, it seems Steve has stumbled upon a lucrative revenue stream: The Love Fisher, a computer program that matches singles with ruthless efficiency. First Janet gets curious about how much better the Love Fisher is at picking dudes for her than she is at picking them for herself; then it's Steve's turn to find out what kind of lady the computer thinks he should be with. Will Janet decide she's settled for a good enough guy, and will Steve cling to her for dear life? Noah has apparently transitioned into defending his dead father's reputation on a full-time basis, and is still being very snitty about it to Matt. Then Matt produces a fat environmental impact report which, when Noah reads it (lol, sure he does), convinces him that his father was a big scumbag after all. Speaking of scumbags: Donna is growing ever less certain that shacking up with Noah is the right move, so it's probably just as well that he has the lawsuit to occupy his attention. In the wake of his breakup with Gina, Dylan decides to take off for Vegas with David, who is soon disgusted by Dylan's willingness not to have a one-night stand with Mary but to lie to her about how serious a relationship the two of them might potentially have. Mary then clings, which David encourages, leading to an awkward moment on Dylan's doorstep when both his brunettes show up at the same time. Gina's got her own problems, which begin with a lost filling and continue through Mel's correct diagnosis of her bulimia. When Dylan can't convince Gina to give him a fifteenth chance, he calls Kelly with a threat to start using again, summoning her to a bad neighbourhood and into the path of a predator. BH S09.E23: The End Of The World As We Know It

It's April 1999, so Steve has finally gotten around to knowing what the Y2K bug and spectacularly overreacting with his doomsday prepping. Is this a healthy response to a possible technological meltdown or, as Janet suspects, a pretext for putting off planning for their future together? Recovering sex addict Katie decides she wants to take her relationship with David to the next level after fourteen months of celibacy; David is so horny that he goes with it instead of considering the implications of what she's asking of him. An ex-colleague of Matt's dumps a toxic waste cancer cluster case on him, which Matt is able to pursue thanks to Dylan's generous backing -- even after Matt tells him one of the defendants is Hunter Oil & Chemical. Noah's pissed. Then a series of farcical events leads to Dylan and Gina watching a nannycam video of an oblivious Matt and Kelly getting it on. Dylan's pissed. Dylan's attempts to get over his jealousy by staging an over-the-top date for Gina leads her to accuse him of having boned Kelly in Mexico, which he doesn't deny. Gina's pissed. In the background, Donna taps a pro beach volleyball player as her menswear muse, though she should be less worried about his pants than hers, which get increasingly hot for him as the episode wears on. BH S09.E22: Local Hero

One of the most convoluted plotlines of the season encompasses the following: a legitimate chance encounter between Dylan and Kelly; the idiotic decision by Kelly, on the phone with Matt when Dylan rolls up, not just to say, "Oh hey, I just ran into Dylan!" and instead to say she's on her way to run errands; a tweaker trying to rob a pregnant woman in broad daylight at fucking Bristol Farms by taking her son hostage; Dylan's foiling of said robbery; Steve's decision to try to infiltrate a sex addicts' meeting to mine content for the Beat; Kelly's even more idiotic decision to tell a real reporter that when the mugger showed up, she was having coffee in her car with STEVE, who went on to save this stranger's life; Gina's need for Matt to represent her in contract negotiations over a commentator job at the Skating Channel. BH S09.E21: I Want to Reach Right Out & Grab Ya

A routine visit to her parents' house leaves Donna on the receiving end of a shocking announcement that, now that she's firmly in her mid-twenties, they feel certain she is strong enough to hear: they're getting a divorce. Like the rest of us, Donna is pretty sure it's Felice's fault, since she's been a nasty rag the entire time we've known her. But when Donna's attempts to pull a holy Parent Trap on them -- seriously, a priest is involved -- Noah journeys to the golf course to find out what's really behind Dr. Martin's restlessness. The complications of the Gina/Dylan/Kelly/Matt love quadrangle continues to metastasize such that this week it entails pool hustling, Olympic gold medalist housesitting, a chimney sweep, a hypnotist, and a mugger. (One of those is fake; try to guess which!) With Claudia returned to Venezuela, David has more time to spend on rehabilitating the career of a has-been DJ whose name is Sonny Sharp but who looks a lot like Shadoe Stevens. And when the Beat's latest freak-show subject is an eleven-year-old child prodigy, Steve makes it his mission to get the kid to relax and be as juvenile as Steve himself is. BH S09.E20: Fortune Cookie

Last time, Noah's inability to fill the club was pushing him toward financial ruination, but now everything's fine, and he and Dylan are working together amicably to promote an upcoming show by fictional artist Cole Younger with a raffle to win a date with him -- in his hotel room, creepily? Anyway, Dylan's first act as manager of the Peach Pit After Dark is to fix the raffle and award the date to Kelly, only to be outmaneuvered by Gina, who just poses as Kelly to claim it for herself. This causes a variety of issues: Kelly is pissed to have to give up her prize (which she knows is ill-gotten); Matt is pissed that she keeps talking to Dylan about it (and also that her attempts to change his image for an ambulance-chasing TV ad are secretly about her wanting to change him into her ex); Dylan is pissed that Gina spends the night in Cole's hotel room; and Gina is pissed that Dylan's uninvited trip to said hotel room ends in a physical assault. Are emotions running so high to ratchet up the tension for a record-breaking hate-fuck? Claudia and David ignore Matt's advice and pursue plans to commit immigration fraud, despite the fact that both of them seem extremely (and, unusually for these nitwits, appropriately) apprehensive about it. Donna's old West Beverly Big Sister Ashley reappears in her life as both start circling the school's production of Romeo & Juliet; Donna's volunteering to make the costumes, while Ashley is building a bad-touch case against beloved drama teacher Mr. Bigelow. Steve's decision to fire a psychic results in her making the (self-fulfilling) prophecy that he's about to go impotent. We'll discuss how flaccid the plotting gets in our Again With This podcast on "Fortune Cookie"! BH S09.E19: The Leprechaun

Since Kelly's extremely awkward relationship with Matt isn't taking up much of her time, she can seek fulfillment in other areas of her life -- like the store! Suddenly remembering that she's supposed to be in charge of business affairs, she gets the idea of hiring a publicist. Donna gets upset at the idea, nervous that taking any steps to push the business past "good" or fine" will lead to a level of success they can't rely on? It's confusing. But Kelly overrules her to throw a (re-)launch party to get press coverage and they both put on their dumbest outfits to co-hostess. Matt, for his part, still isn't sure he's ready to take back up with Kelly post-Lauren; will a couple seeking his help with a prenup make him more or less likely to believe in true love? Noah gets an offer from a restaurateur who wants to move into the Peach Pit's location. Though he wants to remain loyal to Nat if for no other reason than that he'd have to hear about it from Donna otherwise, he's also in the middle of his own money troubles: he's three payments behind on his mortgage. When he tells Nat he's about to lose his lease unless he can pay double his current rent, Nat (apparently) tattles to Dylan, who proceeds to insert himself into their business...soon to become his business. Things are going well for Claudia and David until she tells him she's going to have to move back to Venezuela soon, following the expiration of her visa. If only there were another solution to green card problems that pop culture just LOVES to portray! Finally, Steve's latest gimmick, pegged to St. Patrick's Day, is offensive both to little people and to butchers. We explain how in our Again With This podcast on "The Leprechaun"! BH S09.E18: Bobby Dearest

Gina having learned that Felice is legally responsible for the theft of all her trust fund money, she takes the completely reasonable next step of pursuing legal action to recover the lost principal -- and Donna, who absolutely thought Gina should sue her trustee back when she thought the trustee was her bank, now takes it personally. (Present yet silent through all of this is Bobbi, the one who actually used all that stolen money for her own benefit, which is weird?) Donna doesn't love being in the middle of these warring family factions, which may be why she decides to get support through her ordeal from Noah and act like there was any ambiguity about the end of their relationship despite her having told him "It's over" in precisely those words. David is pissed that Donna's throwing him over again, but decides to get over it by following her advice and using his radio show to solicit applicants for the job of his girlfriend. Matt returns from New York to a fraught emotional situation with Kelly, who wants him back and doesn't want to acknowledge whatever's been going on between herself and Dylan since he came back to town. However, Kelly's going to have to figure out which guy she wants to be with because while Dylan does get into a jetski crash, a good samaritan inconsiderately saves him from death by drowning; it turns out both of them have been frozen by tragedy -- but can they help each other through it by finding new meaning in their lives? BH S09.E17: Slipping Away

The Durnings having decided they'd prefer Lauren to be schizophrenia symptom-free in the short term than alive in the long term, they're going to ill-conceived lengths to try to track down clozapine without a prescription. Kelly, veteran of the Clinic Clinic, thinks she can help solve their problem with an illicit trip south of the border, and who better to bankroll the scheme and act as her bodyguard than Dylan? That Dylan's relationship with Gina is undefined at the moment makes him extra-flirty, and Kelly's confusion about where she stands with Matt (and his wife?) makes her guilty after she gives into her throbbing biological urges. Gina's got big plans to open her own gym, and while she's still too young to crack into the trust full of the money she earned figure skating as a minor, she wants to know how much there is so she can use it as collateral for a business loan. Unfortunately, her estimate is way higher than the reality. Has her unethical mother Bobbi been embezzling, or is another trustee to blame? When she's not chasing down financial records, Gina blabs to Noah that Donna and David are giving their relationship a fourth shot (or is it fifth?), and Noah is a bitch about it. While Steve might have thought his and Janet's problems were settled once he decided he wanted them to make their relationship official, he wasn't prepared to learn that her very traditional Japanese dad doesn't want her seeing anyone outside their community. We'll be screaming about his inaccurate uses of words like "bigot" and "racist," among other things, in our podcast on "Slipping Away"! BH S09.E16: Survival Skills

You may thing that "Beheading St. Valentine" will save you from any further angst in your relationship. Not in the zip! All the established couples start out cozy with a brunch at the Walsh house at which the reunited Durnings are holding forth about their marriage -- until Kelly shows up with a sleeping bag for Steve and makes everyone feel awkward because, you know, she obviously wasn't invited. Kelly continues whining about Matt to anyone who will listen, which ends up being Dylan and no one else, though she manages to listen to Dylan long enough to hear his yearning for purpose in his life and tries to buy it for him in the form of a vintage T-Bird like the one he used to work on as a kid with the uncle we've never heard of before. This makes Gina jealous for rightly assuming Dylan and Kelly are sniffing around each other again, even as she manipulates Noah into telling Donna what happened on the infamous Night Of The Photo Booth -- which, after a false start in which he suggests moving in together instead, he does. Donna flees the wreckage of her relationship with Noah to her friendship with David, though maybe "friendship" isn't actually the right word. Oh AND through all this Lauren and Matt are dealing with the news that if Lauren continues taking clozapine, the (apparently real) wonder drug that brought her back after three years of incapacitation, it will kill her. Meanwhile, Steve and Janet go on a camping trip to have bear STUFF with a couple of disadvantaged teens, who deserve better. BH S09.E15: Beheading St. Valentine

Steve's latest brilliant idea for the Beverly Beat is less about attracting readers and more about attracting gawkers, with "attracting" being the operative word: he wants to copy British tabloids by having cheesecake photos on Page 3 -- though at least he's not prepared for the Beat's models to be topless; bikinis will be just fine! To prepare for a publicity stunt announcing the initiative, he parks it in front of a sun lamp -- in the office, because why not -- which is when Janet notices an irregular mole on his shoulder. Facing the possibility that it could be melanoma leads Steve to re-evaluate his life and ponder what his legacy will be...for a while. Not long. When Donna finds the photo strip from "You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello," Gina leads her to believe that she and Noah did more that night than mug for the camera, and since Noah was wasted, he's not a credible witness in his own defense. Donna's anger leads her to accept David's request that she beard for him at his boss's party, where it turns out to be extremely easy for the two of them to fall back into their old relationshippy ways with not one but two for-real kisses. When she's not trying to pry Noah and Donna apart -- for sport, at this point -- Gina's trying to keep up with Dylan's need to bone in ever more scandalous locations. Matt having finally disclosed his marital status to her, Kelly's moping around, ruining everyone's Valentine's Day with her whining about whether she should fight for Matt against his mentally ill wife. Would it shock you to learn that Kelly is a bitch about it? We break down "Beheading St. Valentine" in our latest Again With This podcast! BH S09.E14: I’m Married

A scandalous round of strip poker touches off a prank war among three of the gang's least clever members: Noah, Steve, and Donna. (David also gets swept up in it, briefly, but only incidentally; mainly, he's occupied chasing after a D-girl Peach Pit patron who may be trying to blow him off.) When the battle takes down a health inspector, Donna and Steve are forced to figure out at what point STUFF must give way to taking legal responsibility like adults. Dylan embarks upon his community service, where he makes a friend of a hardworking fellow parolee and a foe of their racist jerk boss. He's also on bad terms with Gina, who decides to make a stink about Dylan's attractive Narcotics Anonymous sponsor because how dare he seek advice or counsel from any woman but Gina? Matt departs Los Angeles for New York, where he spends time with Lauren, the mystery woman who called him "sweetheart" at the end of the last episode. Turns out she's his ex, recently sprung from a mental institution, and eager to find out whether they might rekindle their relationship. The nature of said relationship? Well, we don't find out until the very last moment before the end credits, although there is a hint in the episode's title. Which is "I'm Married." BH S09.E13: Withdrawal

Having -- through sheer luck -- not killed Donna, Dylan decides he is ready to accept his friends' help in getting help for his heroin addiction. Unfortunately, he's not actually on Intervention and has to spend a night waiting for his bed in a treatment facility to be ready, which gives him just enough time to wake up in the middle of the night, pretend to take a shower, and actually slides out the bathroom window instead. During the manhunt, Kelly fights with Matt about whether she's actually in love with Dylan, and also with Gina about how much Gina is to blame for enabling his drug use; in both cases, Kelly is a bitch about it. Will Dylan survive to give his sobriety his best efforts?! Noah makes a match between up-and-coming pop star Clara and Donna, in the hopes that Clara will let Donna dress her for the BLOCKBUSTER ENTERTAINMENT AWARDS. Will Donna ignore her screaming self-doubts and come up with a gown that will get her good press?! Janet reveals not only that she has a dog, but also that her dog is purebred and promised to another purebred Doberman. Naturally, she entrusts the care of this expensive animal to Steve, the most irresponsible person she knows, so that he can meet a cute woman at the dog park and let Janet's dog fool around with some dude's mutt. Will this lead to a litter of mongrel puppies?!!!??!? We delve into these questions and more in our latest Again With This podcast on "Withdrawal"! BH S09.E12: Trials and Tribulations

Dylan's junkie logic leads him to decide his roommate's order that he get his illegally purchased gun out of the home they share just means he can wait until dark, put it in his pants, drive it over to the Marchette manse, and threaten its occupant. Unfortunately, Tony doesn't live there anymore -- nor, spoiler, does he live anywhere -- and the freaked-out victims of his home invasion call his motorcycle license plate in to the cops, who quickly pick him up. Do they find his drugs on him? Of course they do. Kelly and Matt are already having tension around Kelly's very obvious ongoing lust for Dylan, and Gina's demand that Matt represent him doesn't help. Meanwhile, Gina's lust for Dylan makes her a likely mark for Dylan to manipulate her into sneaking him drugs. Dr. Steve's Art Of The Pick-Up students may not be able to get their shit together when it comes to hitting on women, but they are very organized with regard to the law: they all take Steve to small claims court to get their money back since...he offered a money back guarantee. Matt gets Steve on a TV judge show, where he proceeds to take his star witness -- successful pick-up artist David -- down with him. Donna and Noah, oppressed by all the other people who live in the Walsh house, decide the answer is to try to bone at Donna's parents' house when the Martins go out of town. So much STUFF ensues that when Donna becomes the victim of a druggy Dylan accident, it's almost a relief to see it end, even in possible tragedy. BH S09.E11: How to Be the Jerk Women Love

We may not have previously understood how committed Gina is to the project of messing with Donna until this episode, in which she reinvents herself as a personal trainer and starts working out with...Felice. She easily parlays their new intimacy into an invitation to a George luncheon hosted by a not-yet-dead (but still completely offscreen) John F. Kennedy Jr., which she makes sure to tell Donna about so that Donna feels good and slighted. It's a good thing Gina has something else to focus on, because she's also just found out that Dylan is using hard drugs and is sort of trying to enforce healthy boundaries with him, but also, not really. Dylan isn't that interested in Gina because he's still focused on his dead wife -- even more so when he tries to go leave a bouquet on her grave, only to find it's not there anymore. The reasonable next step is, of course, to buy a gun through a random drug dealer and make plans to take it to Tony Marchette's house to encourage him to tell Dylan where Toni's bones ended up. Kelly and Matt are getting closer -- though Kelly apparently feels weird about sleeping with a whole new guy in the same bedroom where she used to bone Brandon. Speaking of boning: Steve decides he's qualified to give expensive seminars on "The Art Of The Pick-Up." BH S09.E10: Marathon Man

The approaching yuletide holidays haven't given Dylan any more concern for either her busy schedule as the co-proprietress of a retail clothing store, nor for her relationship with a dude who isn't him. So with that in mind, of course he has no compunction about getting her on a private plane and flying her to Mexico for huevos rancheros, authentic sombreros, and a Mayan fertility statue into which he can stuff an extremely tiny amount of heroin. Gina takes a break from her suspicions about Sonia -- now working off her debt to Donna at the store (when she's not using the space to bone a dude after hours) -- to be jealous of the attention Dylan's paying Kelly and hang around close enough to swoop in as soon as Kelly tells Dylan she's not interested in taking him back. Gina's so willing to take Kelly's sloppy seconds that she even agrees to take exactly the same trip to Mexico Dylan took Kelly on and receive the gift of exactly the same Mayan sculpture, filled with exactly the same smuggled contraband. It's just Gina's bad luck that the store gets robbed when she knocks off early to go fuck around in Cabo and drive Kelly back into Matt's arms. Through all this, Noah is using Gina as his TaskRabbit for Donna's surprise birthday party, because he is just as oblivious about Gina's feelings about her cousin as Donna herself is. And in the background of everyone's week is a dance marathon AIDS fundraiser at the club for which Steve accidentally makes an overly generous pledge. Does Steve then try to scam a charity? You know he does. We take you through all the highs and lows "Marathon Man" in our latest podcast! BH S09.E09: The Following Options

Kelly spent all of "I'm Back Because" -- well, all except when she was making eyes at Dylan -- getting between her mother and her grandfather, to make sure her grandfather's legally documented wishes with regard to the end of his life were being followed. So naturally, in this episode, all Jackie has to do is call and ask Kelly to put her failing grandfather on a ventilator for Kelly to utterly disregard her legal responsibility. It seems to be mostly so that she has something to do this week -- specifically, feel real bad. And also guilt Matt about his smoking. Gina decides there's no point continuing to try to break up Donna's relationship so she can snatch Noah up for herself as long as Dylan's around, kissing up to him with pizza and beer and trying to get details on why things between him and Kelly fell apart. Dylan barely has time to bother negging her given his busy schedule of mooning over the car his late wife was killed in. Steve continues struggling with the challenge of behaving appropriately in response to Samantha's later-in-life coming-out, though Steve's not the only one: the tabloids have gotten the story and there are repercussions for her career. Finally: if you thought Kelly's resignation from the Clinic meant we'd be done seeing gangsters trying to fix the lives of disadvantaged Angelenos, you didn't predict Donna's new job running a fashion boutique would throw her in the path of an actual teen-girl gangster with some truly cutting critiques for Donna's designs. BH S09.E08: I’m Back Because

Since Gina doesn't have a job -- or an agent, even, despite what she's told Donna -- she's got nothing but time to devote to the new project she's pursuing post-Cabaret On Ice: Donna And Noah On The Rocks. When she's alone with Donna, she diligently shit-talks Noah (not that hard, given his many failings) to try to change Donna's mind about making their relationship work. And when she's alone with Noah, she suggests reasons it's not worth his trying to get back into Donna's good graces, what with how demanding and spoiled Donna is. The antique tech known as an answering machine plays a supporting role in Gina's scheming, but will Donna and Noah's beautiful love story survive Gina's assaults?! Speaking of assault, David's still facing charges for statutory rape, though Matt can't quite devote all his attention to it while also dealing with his shaky finances. Stepping into the breach is Dylan, freelance investigator, who feels free to cast aspersions on Denise's sincerity and the elder O'Lares' parenting while also enlisting Mrs. Teasley in his efforts to discredit a minor child. Sure glad his smarmy ass came back. Kelly's a lot happier to have Dylan back in her life right now, as she tries to figure out how to handle her dying grandfather's desire to end treatment and her mother's refusal to honour his wishes -- not that Dylan's that eager to hear about her problems until she basically forces him to. Samantha has several bones to pick with Steve, from the direction the Beat has taken into trashy celebrity coverage to his disapproval of her choice of partner. We'll give you two guesses whose side we're on and the first doesn't count. We're talking about all of it in our podcast on "I'm Back Because"!
