Understanding Your Child’s Identity Podcast #267

Cathy and Todd discuss why children like to have something of their own to feel “special”, and why it helps to normalize these feelings rather than shame them into thinking differently. They also discuss why normalizing feelings is reliant on the parent’s self understanding, and why it’s important to frame the world, experiences, and opportunities as abundant rather than limited. “Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.” Kahlil Gibran- The Prophet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6kLbDHu0yc Other Resources Zen Gets Real 2016 Conference tickets are now on sale. How To Handle Criticism -Podcast #265

Todd and Cathy discuss criticism, why it hurts so much and why it’s an inevitable part of life. They discuss why it’s important to speak up, even in the face of criticism, and how to offer constructive criticism rather than blame and guilt. They share personal stories about how they talk to each other about their pain, and why most of the pain stems from childhood. They discuss the wisdom of Elizabeth Gilbert and cartoonist Lynda Barry and how they deal with criticism in their creative lives. How to Know If You’re Conscious Podcast #262

Cathy and Todd discuss what it means to live above and below the line, a consciousness tool taught by Jim Dethmer from the Conscious Leadership Group. Above the line means you think from a place of abundance, creativity, and openness, while below the line means you think defensively and rigidly and with a constant need to be right. This understanding affects our understanding of the workplace, our parenting, and most importantly ourselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLqzYDZAqCI Conscious Ledership Group Other Resources Zen Gets Real 2016 Conference tickets are now on sale. Children Know That Grace Is Given, Not Earned- Podcast #258

Cathy and Todd share the words of a 6-year-old girl who wants her divorced parents to stop fighting. She offers wisdom beyond her years, and wakes us up to what children know and what we need to remember. Her words are a form of grace, and being open to her words will deepen your awareness and remind you that grace often comes from the most uncommon places – other people, a sunset, an animal, or simply the willingness to notice what has always been there. They also discuss the story of the “Drowning Man” and Todd’s usage of “sweety” and its genesis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vm0UNn7tJ5o&feature=youtu.be   Other Resources Our Kickstarter campaign has come to an end. Change your words, change your life: Mindfulness vs Mindlessness

Cathy and Todd discuss the life-changing mindfulness research of Ellen Langer, author and professor from Harvard who has been researching mindfulness (and mindlessness) since the 70’s. She defines mindfulness as paying attention and being able to notice new things, while recognizing that experiences are based on the words and ideas that we attach to them. Ellen Langer was interviewed by Krista Tippet for the On Being Podcast. We read an excerpt from Videographer/Storyteller Shawn Boyle. Brenè Brown, Rising Strong: The Reckoning

Cathy and Todd discuss Brenè Brown’s new book Rising Strong and focus on the first step, The Reckoning. Reckoning is how we engage and become curious about our feelings, our willingness to practice emotional intelligence. If we do not engage our feelings, if we deny and disengage, then our emotions “don’t go away; instead, they own us, they define us…” (from Rising Strong). https://vimeo.com/135475648 Thanks for supporting us! What does “Be Present” mean anyway?

Cathy and Todd discuss what it means to be present, and how this knowledge can be turned into daily practice. They also discuss their differences when it comes to filling up a Saturday, why it’s important to dance with our fear, and why the Humans of New York Facebook page wakes us up to the world. The entry from Humans of New York that Todd read- “Imagine that every time you have a lapse in judgment, it gets printed in newspapers around the world: every time you lose patience with your children, every time you scream at someone in traffic, every time you drink too much and do something you regret. Each time you slip up, everyone hears about it. The world is never notified about the 99.99% of the time that you are a completely normal, productive, law-abiding citizen. The world only learns about you when things go wrong. Now imagine what the world would think of you. It’s not that terrorism, patriarchy, and violence aren’t real problems in Pakistan. They exist and the country is battling these issues every single day. Pakistanis are very much aware of the extremism in their midst. The problem is that so many people seem to only be aware of that extremism. Because just as in the hypothetical example above—the other 99.99% of life just doesn’t make the news. When there’s only room in the newspaper for a single column about Pakistan, it’s going to be filled with the most compelling story. And unfortunately, that tends to be the most violent story. And those are important stories. Those are the types of stories that expose corruption, stop genocide, and alert the world to emerging threats. It’s right for those stories to be told. But when those stories are all that we hear, it’s so easy to imagine a world that’s far scarier than it really is. You lose sight of the 99.99% of the world that’s not scary at all. And living in fear can be a dangerous thing. Because if we’re afraid of each other, we’ll never be able to work together to solve our common problems.” They also discuss an exercise from their Tony Robbins weekend regarding fear… [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”] Other Resources Todd’s 12 week Zen Finance begins in September. Do Boys Read Books About Girls?

Girls tend to read books with male protagonists (Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid), but do boys read books with female protagonists? Todd and Cathy ask this question, as well as how men respond to female leads in movies and television (specifically their recent experience after seeing the movie Trainwreck, and why Amy Poehler once got mad at Jimmy Fallon in the SNL writer’s room). They also talk about Who’s the Boss, Family Ties, and why IBM and Netflix are changing their family policies. We also discuss our friend Roman Krznaric’s Empathy Museum. The Truth About Sex Education

*May not be appropriate for children* Cathy and Todd discuss John Oliver’s most recent rant on Last Week Tonight about sex education. He makes vital points about why abstinence-only education doesn’t work for all, why there’s no required standards for sex education around the country, and why shame/guilt/fear do not change sexual behavior, they only negatively impact the way people feel about themselves. They also discuss why Elizabeth Smart believes abstinence-only sex ed can be harmful, and they talk about Amy Schumer’s Football Town Nights sketch and why humor can open up important conversations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0jQz6jqQS0   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TM2RUVnTlvs Other Resources Todd’s 12 week Zen Finance begins in September. Finding Your Family’s Rhythm

Trade Criticism for Compassion

Cathy and Todd discuss why self criticism and fear decrease our ability to create meaningful change, and why self compassion is essential for goal setting. They also discuss the “neurotic roommate” inside our head, why balance may not exist, and the big mistake at the end of The Karate Kid. The following also discuss listener’s questions: Question #1- I’d love some advice on how the two of you handle situations when you think the other person is doing it WRONG. Whether it’s with each other, your kids, your siblings, etc. As the big sister, I realize I can be an insufferable know it all at times, and as the partner with all the years of therapy and self help under my belt, I often think I have a great idea or suggestion for my partner. My brilliant insights (aka unsolicited advice) are not always received with the enthusiasm I had hoped for. I am working on letting go, and I made myself a bracelet with the words “necessary-useful-kind” to give me some guideposts before I talk. How do the two of you navigate this? The more I learn, the more excited I get, and the more I want to tell everyone how do life better. I’m afraid I’m becoming sort of obnoxious. I listened to your show on not pushing self help on your partner and that created a huge shift in me and I have (to the best of my awareness) stopped doing that. Our relationship has improved dramatically. I am realizing that this is an area where I still need support in the rest of my life. Thank you for any insight you can offer! Question #2- A dear friend of mine struggles with his 18-year-old daughter, who believes that her father was not as involved in her childhood as he should have been (not supportive enough, not interested in her interests, etc). He feels he was a good parent, so it’s very hurtful to hear this from his daughter, and it is a constant source of strain in their relationship. What do you do when a child believes you were selfish and didn’t put their needs first, and you don’t see things the same way? I worry about this from my own children so I’m interested to hear what advice you might offer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W45DRy7M1no https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oomCIXGzsR0 Other Resources Please consider supporting us in our Kickstarter Campaign for the ZPR Conference in March, 2016. Happiness vs. Pleasure

Cathy and Todd discuss a blog by Mark Manson titled, Stop Trying to Be Happy. They discuss the difference between happiness and pleasure, and why “happiness is the process of becoming your ideal self”. It’s the pursuit of our ideal self, not the achievement of goals, that allows us to experience our “happy”.
