S1 Ep 435WR435: Clash Contrast

E

Local electronic artist [Clash Contrast](http://clashcontrast.bandcamp.com) has been on the scene since 2007, and her pursuit of electronica has taken her across the country and into some unexpected locations (like recording an album at the library!) We talk about her influences in trip-hop, drum n' bass, jungle, chillwave, electro-pop and more, and I fill in some much-needed gaps in my (admittedly lacking) knowledge of the electronic community. Unfortunately (my bad), a chunk of this conversation was lost because I didn't check how much space was left on my memory card, but the bulk of the interview is there, and I think it's a good one. This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://hwww.myparktheatre.com/)!

S1 Ep 434WR434: Ryan Nash

E

Ryan Nash has been a frequent guest on the podcast, talking about his bands [Union Stockyards](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/wr199-union-stockyards-34d5d892673bc4L/) and [Agapito](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/wr244-agapito-356455da00264eL/), as well as an appearance as a member of anti-fascist group [FF1](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/wr237-ff1-353ea11da89fb0L/). On this episode, we talk primarily about his newest project, instrumental rock trio [Agassiz](http://agassizband.com/), who recently released a new two-song EP, [Pulse 1B](http://agassiz.bandcamp.com/album/pulse-1b). This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://[[text](http://)](http://)www.myparktheatre.com/)!

S1 Ep 433WR433: Precursor Productions

E

At this year’s [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest/), I moderated a panel with [Precursor Productions](http://www.precursorproductions.com/) about the more technical side of recording. The panel was a hit, so I sat down and recorded - in their studio - an interview with Precursor's Andrew Yankiwski and Paul Blandford, all about the studio biz, recording bands, the way the music industry has changed over the years, and much more. This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/)!

S1 Ep 432WR432: Tape Worm

E

Andre Cornejo is well-known in the local music scene from his history of playing with super-heavy local bands, but he’s currently working on a (still heavy) solo electronic project called Tape Worm! We talk about tape loops, gear hoarding, learning on the go, and much more. This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/), and by local folk-rockers [Six-Foot Citrus](http://www.facebook.com/sixfootcitrus/), who are releasing a new EP on Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Good Will! S1 Ep 431WR431: Death Cassette

E

It's a new episode recorded in a basement jam space with mighty grunge-punks [Death Cassette](http://deathcassettemusic.bandcamp.com/releases), who are busy working on their debut full-length. We talk about their raw, unpolished sound, their ability to fit in with a number of different local scenes, fitting the band in among the members' various other projects, and much more! Although Death Cassette doesn't have a ton of recorded material available yet, you can hear – for the first time ever – their brand new single, "Anaconda", exclusively on the podcast (until it becomes available on streaming services in a few days)! This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/), and by local folk-rockers [Six-Foot Citrus](http://www.facebook.com/sixfootcitrus/), who are releasing a new EP this Sunday at the Good Will!

S1 Ep 430WR430: Ed Wayne

E

Continuing in the tradition of rural country artists being great interviewees is [Ed Wayne](http://www.edwaynemusic.com/), who hung out with me in a Tim Hortons to talk about his upcoming acoustic tour, being a traditional, pure country artist, and much more! We also have a shared love for the Louvin Brothers (and you should too)! This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/), and by Manitoba country artist [Brian Jacobs](http://brianjacobsmusic.ca/), whose excellent ‘Highways and Backroads’ record is up for two Manitoba Country Music Association awards!

S1 Ep 429WR429: Roger('s) Arsenal

E

You might know singer-songwriter [Roger's Arsenal](http://rogersarsenal.bandcamp.com) for his roles in a number of Winnipeg bands over the years, or for his heart-wrenching solo material, but he’s spent the last little while working on something new – his first book. "[Bear's Necessities](http://www.instagram.com/bearsnecessitiesbook/)" –written by "Roger Arsenal" – comes out on Halloween, and we talked about self-publishing, transitioning from a songwriter to a novelist, and much more! Please note the last few minutes of the interview got cut off because the memory card was full, so I threw one of Roger's songs up there at the end instead. Also, I realized after the fact that I repeat myself ("fun conversation") in the intro. Sorry. This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/)!

S1 Ep 428WR428: Quinton Blair live!

E

As many of you know, I like to host back yard shows with some of my favourite local artists, usually in the summer. This episode you're about to hear was intended to take place outside, but then Manitoba got[ hammered with a storm](http://globalnews.ca/news/6022654/manitobans-may-be-in-the-dark-into-sunday-hydro/), so we had a Thanksgiving potluck in the house, with the one and only [Quinton Blair](http://quintonblair.com/) performing two fantastic live sets to a basement crammed full of people. Quinton – backed by Sean Borton of [Foster Martin Band](http://www.fostermartinband.com/) fame – played originals, covers, requests, and even some new tunes. I've always maintained that house shows are the best way to see live music, and this was yet another example of why that's true. Hopefully we can make these potluck/house shows a Thanksgiving tradition. If you dig Quinton's music, why not check out the [recent interview](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/wr396-quinton-blair-377cda13ed2bea/) I did with him for the podcast? This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/), and by Manitoba country artist [Brian Jacobs](http://brianjacobsmusic.ca/), whose excellent '[Highways and Backroads](http://[[text](http://)](http://)brianjacobs.bandcamp.com/album/highways-backroads)' record is up for two Manitoba Country Music Association awards!

S1 Ep 427WR427: Vagina Witchcraft

E

Some bands have good names. Some bands have great names. Other bands have amazing names, like [Vagina Witchcraft](http://vaginawitchcraft.bandcamp.com/releases)! This episode is an interview with two members of the local hardcore/doom/sludge/etc. outfit, in which we discuss representation in the local scene, their big gig opening for Propagandhi, learning to scream, THAT NAME, and a lot more! This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/).

Oct 17, 201942 min

S1 Ep 426WR426: The Brotherhood & Co.

E

It's a conversation with young pop-punkers [The Brotherhood & Co.](http://www.facebook.com/TheBrotherhood.wpg/) (two of 'em, anyway) about their project’s roots, which go back almost 10 years, getting into the local music scene as adults, the business of marketing a band in this dystopic techno-future, and much more! This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/).

S1 Ep 425WR425: The Gerry Hatricks

E

Progressive folk-rock-punk foursome [The Gerry Hatricks](http://thegerryhatricks.bandcamp.com/releases) are on the verge of releasing their excellent self-titled debut EP, so we sat down in a dog-filled living room to talk all about it. The group, which is an extension and expansion of frontman Gerrit Delaquis' solo sound, discusses the songs' complexity and technicality, the process of recording and writing the EP, and a lot more. They also perform four acoustic songs, and since – at the time this is being released – there isn't a ton of Gerry Hatricks material available until the record hits Bandcamp on Oct. 11, it's a cool way to get an advance listen. This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/).

S1 Ep 424WR424: Manitoba Podcast Festival

E

On Sept. 29, we held our second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest/) at the Park Theatre. This year's event was a big success, in part, because of the networking format we set up, which allowed podcasters, listeners, and everyone else to meet and share with local creators in every possible genre. This episode is a compilation of some of the conversations I had over the course of the afternoon with some of the participants, including (in chronological order): [Travelling Minds](http://libbyj.ca/podcast/), [Echo Podcast](http://www.echopodcast2019.com/), [2 Baked Girls](http://2bakedgirls.org/), [Thick & Sweaty](http://thicknsweaty.podbean.com/), [Koj-B Films](http://www.kojbfilms.com/), [This Ain't Babysittin'](http://www.facebook.com/thisaintbabysittin/), [Beaver Does Movies](http://beaverdoesmovies.wixsite.com/beaverdoesmovies), and CKUW's [Behind the Curtain](http://ckuw.ca/programs/detail/behind-the-curtain). These, of course, were only a few of the many podcasters at the event, and we're hoping to build on the festival's momentum with events throughout the year. This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). …and by [Trevor Fisher](http://www.linkedin.com/in/fishertrevor) of Way2Wealth Management, a local Certified Financial Planner who can help you start planning your financial independence. S1 Ep 423WR423: Mike Koop

E

It's a wide-ranging interview with a quiet icon of Winnipeg's music scene, [Mike Koop](http://www.youtube.com/user/deathcureseverything) (The Bonaduces, The Leftists, The Kicker, Cheerleader, Buick 6, etc.) We talk about his (great) country gospel album, his bands’ place in Winnipeg’s musical continuity, the everlasting appeal of the CD format, and much more! This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). It’s also brought to you by MCMA Award-nominated country artist [Brian Jacobs](http://brianjacobsmusic.ca/), whose debut solo record ‘[Highways and Backroads](http://brianjacobs.bandcamp.com/album/highways-backroads)’ is available now! Award-winning local jazz/fusion/psychedelic wizards [Apollo Suns](http://apollosunswpg.bandcamp.com/) are back with a Winnipeg show [Oct. 11 at the Park Theatre](http://www.facebook.com/events/2218967255062107/)!

E

Acclaimed Celtic-folk singer-songwriter/fiddler/harpist/etc. [Lizzy Hoyt](http://lizzyhoyt.com/) has a big show coming up at the WECC Oct. 9 with her trio. We met up at a coffee shop for a conversation about her experience as a (relative) newcomer to Winnipeg’s music scene, her interest in writing about Canadian history – which earned her a royal honour – and much more! S1 Ep 421WR421: Alex Seville

E

In the late '90s, I played in a ska band called [Grandpa's Army](http://www.witchpolice.com/2009/04/every-grandpas-army-song-ever.html), and my old friend Alex Seville was the keyboard player. Alex has been living in San Francisco for the past few years, where he’s not playing music, but is – in a turn surprising to anyone who knew him in Winnipeg – participating in freestyle rap-based improv. We talk about all of that, plus the weird creative projects we did back in the day (including a [documentary about Grandpa's Army](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoMrwRIHrhk&list=PL7AAE58E5EC81BEB4)) that - in a roundabout way - eventually led to me doing this podcast. Songs on this episode: Grandpa's Army - "Train to Hicksville" Grandpa's Army - "The Land of Nod" (both live recordings) A Auspicii - "Boris" (weird backwards thing we did) Jesse Matas feat. Confucious tha Ruthless - Rolling in the Juicebox (recorded by Alex) This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. It's also brought to you by MCMA Award-nominated country artist [Brian Jacobs](http://brianjacobsmusic.ca/), whose debut solo record '[Highways and Backroads](http://https://brianjacobs.bandcamp.com/album/highways-backroads)' is available now!

This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. S1 Ep 419WR419: The New Customs

E

Capital-F folk duo [The New Customs](http://www.thenewcustoms.com/) are set to release their new LP, Selling Religion on Government Street in early October, so we hung out at a Tim Hortons near the airport for a podcast. Dale and Emma have been hustling hard at this acoustic storytelling business for a number of years now, and their indie-folk sound reflects the genre's ins and outs, including its ability to put across a a serious political message with a mellow backing. Check 'em out [Oct. 3 at The Park Theatre](http://www.thenewcustoms.com/shows/srogs-cd-release) for a hometown release show before they take their show on the road and present the new record to audiences across the country. This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. It’s also brought to you by Polish-Canadian electronic outfit [Hypernashion](http://www.facebook.com/Hypernashion-Band-116231005088/) and the whole [Hyper Recordz](http://www.hyperrecordz.com/) family. Be sure to check out the [new Hypernashion single](http://youtu.be/pjsBFU7O5EI) (feat. 5imon5ez and Joe Silva).

S1 Ep 418WR418: Del Barber

E

Prairie singer-songwriter [Del Barber](http://delbarber.com/) is about to release a fantastic new album, [Easy Keeper](http://delbarber.com/album/1069833/easy-keeper), which is the culmination of a rollercoaster few years that saw him forced to kickstart his career from scratch after a decade of building it up. We talk about his descriptive, sincere storytelling, his new perspective on the music business, finding peace with his place in the world, and much, much more. This is only Del's [second appearance](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/wr300-del-barber-36693d03625dca/) on the podcast, but he's already one of my favourite guests in the podcast's long history. This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. S1 Ep 417WR417: Parts Project

E

Winnipeg expat Allan Hanley, perhaps best known locally in his DJ guise as Turtilian, is back with [Parts Project](http://www.facebook.com/partsmusicproject/), a new creative outlet that puts him in the driver's seat playing live electronic music. Parts Project is in town Saturday, Sept. 14 for a [live show](http://www.facebook.com/events/729894617463939/) with a number of familiar faces from his old Winnipeg crew, as well an electronic music workshop the following weekend. It's a fun conversation about finding primal, emotional sounds in electronics, and much more! This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. The episode features some excellent songs from the two albums by Adrien's old roots group [Jackpine](http://uniter.ca/view/adapting-to-a-new-climate). Sept. 10 is Election Day in Manitoba. S1 Ep 413WR413: Aaron Bacon

E

Bassist, music teacher, and YouTuber Aaron Bacon isn't new to the podcast – he's been on Witchpolice Radio before as a member of both [Dizzy Mystics](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/35c82ec809bf42/) and [Aphelion](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/368a3bad6675d2/) – but we've never talked about this project before. [Bacon's Bass Place](http://www.facebook.com/BaconsBassPlace/) is Aaron's all-purpose online presence for teaching bass techniques, vlogging, podcasting, and a lot more. We have a conversation in the food court about the project, where it's going, how it got started, and a lot more. Stay tuned to the end of the episode to [hear an example](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMUpDt7KCnk) of one of Aaron's bass lessons! This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are presenting this year’s Manitoba Podcast Festival on Sept. 29! You’ll also want to check out a [show Sept. 6 at the Cavern](http://www.facebook.com/events/405665890061421/), featuring a trio of past guests on the podcast – [Joe Curtis Band](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/368d6cb7dccec0/), [Paige Drobot](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/37461d930714ac/), and [Heartsleeve](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/3790b3f76eba1e/). It’s hard to think of a better or more eclectic lineup. ...and go out and grab the debut record by new local metal fusion band [Book of Ghosts](http://www.instagram.com/bookofghostsofficial), which dropped everywhere Aug. 27!

S1 Ep 412WR412: Yer Mum

E

Local punks [Yer Mum](http://yermum.bandcamp.com/releases) reminded me of just how much *fun* punk rock can be, and how much I miss playing in a band with this amount of energy and ridiculousness. It's a really fun conversation about skateboarding, drinking, touring, dogs and more, recorded at “The Whorehouse"... plus some live performances! This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. S1 Ep 411WR411: Luciano

E

I spent some time with an absolute legend for this episode. Iconic reggae artist [Luciano](http://lucianomessenjah.com/) was in town, live and direct from Jamaica, for a performance Aug. 23 at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain. Although I had [interviewed Luciano four or five years ago](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/3519538383436eL/), that was over the phone, and this was my first time meeting The Messenger in person. He's an artist with an unbelievably deep catalogue and international acclaim, but he's down-to-earth enough to hang out in a coffee shop for a podcast interview – and to get into some deep thoughts as well. This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are presenting this year's Manitoba Podcast Festival on Sept. 29! It’s also brought to you by [Wildflower Media](http://wildflowermedia.ca/), a local media and graphic design company that specializes in websites and graphic design, especially posters and social media graphics. S1 Ep 410WR410: The Famous Sandhogs

E

Ever since I discovered the weird world of the [Famous Sandhogs](http://thefamoussandhogs.bandcamp.com/) a few years back, I've been curious about its anonymous creator's identity and motives behind the project. We come a little closer on this episode (but no spoilers, I still don't know who he actually is). It's an interview over the phone, in which we talk about his vast catalogue, the deep levels of research and mythology, his recent (masked, of course) live show, and more. If you're looking for an entry point to the Sandhogs universe, it's hard to find something better than [*Paris Green*](http://thefamoussandhogs.bandcamp.com/album/paris-green), a full-fledged, choose-your-own-adventure style board game in album form. This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. It's also brought to you by [Trevor Fisher](http://https://www.linkedin.com/in/fishertrevor) of Way2Wealth Management, a local Certified Financial Planner who can help you start planning your financial independence. Call him at 204-471-3011 or email him at [email protected] to get your finances on the right track today!

S1 Ep 409WR409: FreakingSnap

E

[FreakingSnap](http://freakingsnap.bandcamp.com/) is an extremely prolific local electronic/experimental artist. He's released over 400 albums (and counting), and as we discuss on this episode, it's all building to an eventual goal. We talk about how/where to delve into such an epic catalogue, about the differences between live on-stage recordings and basement jams, being nervous performing improvised pieces, and much more. This episode is coming out on a notable date for Chris, too... kinda. It's probably going to end up being released right at the end of 8/14, but close enough to 8/15 that it pretty much counts. This episode is brought to you by Osborne Village’s new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/), and by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). It's also brought to you by [Wildflower Media](http://wildflowermedia.ca/), a local media and graphic design company that specializes in websites and graphic design, especially posters and social media graphics. S1 Ep 408WR408: Rob Knaggs Live in the Back Yard

E

As many of you know, I like to host intimate little house shows in my back yard each summer. This episode of the podcast is the recording of one of the sets from our most recent back yard gig. This is a set by the show's headliner, Australian avant-cellist [Rob Knaggs](http://www.robknaggs.com/). Rob was back in Manitoba for the first time in quite a while (hear him talk about going home to Oz on a [previous interview](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/36da6f44a8cef6/) podcast), and he played a deadly set in the light of day – just Rob on the deck with the cello and no visuals. As mentioned in the intro, Rob's set was considerably louder than the others I recorded that afternoon, so there's a bit of clipping at times, but it doesn't take away from the Arctic-inspired beauty of his compositions. This episode is brought to you by Osborne Village’s new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/), and by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). It's also brought to you by Polish-Canadian electronic outfit [Hypernashion](http://www.facebook.com/Hypernashion-Band-116231005088/) and the whole [Hyper Recordz](http://www.hyperrecordz.com/) family. Be sure to check out the [new Hypernashion single](http://youtu.be/pjsBFU7O5EI) (feat. 5imon5ez and Joe Silva). You'll also want to check out a [show Sept. 6 at the Cavern](http://www.facebook.com/events/405665890061421/), featuring a trio of past guests on the podcast – [Joe Curtis Band](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/368d6cb7dccec0/), [Paige Drobot](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/37461d930714ac/), and [Heartsleeve](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/3790b3f76eba1e/). It's hard to think of a better or more eclectic lineup. Finally, shoutout to Jesse Waters-Wolfe, the latest contributor to our [Patreon page](http://www.patreon.com/witchpolice). I don't push the Patreon hard, but it's there if you feel like the digital equivalent of throwing a tip in our guitar case. S1 Ep 407WR407: Slattern (From The Archives)

E

When I transferred the huge Witchpolice archive over to the current hosting site, about 50 episodes from 2013-2014 got missed. Although they've always been available, buried on the old Witchpolice site, they've never been formally discoverable on podcast platforms like Spotify or Apple Podcasts. I [recently asked listeners](http://www.facebook.com/WitchpoliceRadio/posts/2248282975270760) which of these lost episode(s) they'd like to hear re-released, this one – with Julia Ryckman, a/k/a [Slattern](http://www.juliaryckmanslattern.com/) – was easily the most-requested. At the time this episode (WR084) originally came out in July 2014, Witchpolice Radio had a very different format. We (I wasn't the only host!) weren't only interviewing local musicians, but were asking them to select songs from their own record collections based on randomly-generated theme words. Due to the sketchy legality of broadcasting other people's songs without permission, the selections are edited out of this episode, but it's still a great conversation, and was one of my favourites of the early years of the podcast. This episode is brought to you by Osborne Village’s new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/), and by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/).

S1 Ep 406WR406: Sarau Carioca Live in the Back Yard

E

As many of you know, I like to host intimate little house shows in my back yard each summer. This episode of the podcast is the recording of one of the sets from our most recent back yard gig. This set is by Brazilian-Canadian samba/bossa nova duo [Sarau Carioca](http://www.saraucarioca.com/), who I was really excited to have on the bill. They're doing something very different from anything we'd had at a house show before, and their mellow, gorgeous melodies are a must-listen... even if you don't speak Portuguese. I’ll be releasing each of these live sets (most likely) as every second episode over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for a performance by Rob Knaggs (as well as the previously-released [Lana Winterhalt](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/378e5c502e2c50/) and [Two Crows for Comfort](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/3793c9c12d6a1c/) sets), alternating with the regular Witchpolice interviews. This episode is brought to you by Osborne Village’s new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/), and by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). Also, be sure to check out our pals in Winnipeg’s [The Lovers](http://www.facebook.com/handsomelousy/), who are set to release a new album – *The Erotic Awakening of Asia’s Mom* – in September on all digital services and on CD. While you wait, check out the out-of-this-world new video for the record’s lead single ‘[State of Mind](http://youtu.be/KouLxbTWe3Y)’, which blends the band’s trademark harmonica-driven, rockabilly/cowpunk sound with intergalactic visuals.

S1 Ep 405WR405: One of Us

E

[One of Us](http://oneofus204.bandcamp.com/) is relatively new to the Winnipeg music scene as a band, but the band members are longtime veterans of the local punk rock community, having played in punk bands for decades. We talk about their sound, the undying appeal of melodic hardcore, their upcoming gigs – including a [Jarvis fire benefit](http://www.facebook.com/events/2550501931647873/[text](http://)) and dream gigs opening for the likes of Propagandhi and Good Riddance – and a lot more. There's also a killer live acoustic performance, as well as a sneak peek at some new material. This episode is brought to you by Osborne Village’s new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/), and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/).

S1 Ep 404WR404: Two Crows for Comfort Live in the Back Yard

E

As many of you know, I like to host intimate little house shows in my back yard each summer. This episode of the podcast is the recording of one of the sets from our most recent back yard gig. Folk duo [Two Crows for Comfort](http://www.twocrowsforcomfort.com/) played a fantastic set of songs, primarily from their highly-recommended debut album, 17 Feet'. I've seen them a few times in a few different contexts now, and they seem like one of those versatile groups that could probably play a show anywhere and still fit in – but they seemed particularly at home at a cozy little back yard show. I’ll be releasing each of these live sets (most likely) as every second episode over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for performances by Sarau Carioca and Rob Knaggs (as well as the previously-released [Lana Winterhalt](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/378e5c502e2c50/) set), alternating with the regular Witchpolice interviews. This episode is brought to you by Osborne Village’s new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/), and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/).

S1 Ep 403WR403: Heartsleeve

E

The fellas in [Heartsleeve](http://www.facebook.com/heartsleevemb) may be relatively new to the local scene, but they have their banjos n’ mandos n’ more sound well honed. I hung out with them in a terrifying (yet lovely) porch in the middle of nowhere for a conversation about their folk-with-a-twist sound, covering the Mars Volta with a banjo, playing as a full band vs. basic acoustic duos or trios, and much more. Plus, they performed four songs live, and since they don't have any formal recordings out yet... this may be one of the only places you can hear them. For now, anyway. This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba’s newest and most exciting country music festival, by Osborne Village’s new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/),and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/).

S1 Ep 402WR402: Lana Winterhalt Live From the Back Yard

E

As many of you know, I like to host intimate little house shows in my back yard each summer. This episode of the podcast is the recording of one of the sets from our most recent back yard gig, which happened this past Saturday. Singer-songwriter [Lana Winterhalt](http://www.lanawinterhalt.com/) released one of my favourite albums of 2018, and in this live set, she shows that her songs are equally as powerful when stripped down to just an acoustic guitar and a vocal FX pedal. I'll be releasing each of these live sets (most likely) as every second episode over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for performances by Two Crows for Comfort, Sarau Carioca, and Rob Knaggs as well, alternating with the regular Witchpolice interviews. This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba’s newest and most exciting country music festival, by Osborne Village's new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/),and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/).

S1 Ep 401WR401: Holy Void

E

[Holy Void](http://holyvoidband.bandcamp.com/), a self-described "nightmare-inducing psychedelic quartet" is set to release a new full-length album on Transistor 66, so bassist Danny Hacking is on the show to talk spooky vibes, that elusive Winnipeg sound, and much more! [Transistor 66](http://www.transistor66.com/) is the city's undisputed champion of record labels, and with the release of the 'Naught LP', Holy Void adds to their deep, wonderful catalogue of records from Winnipeg and beyond. Hear some new tracks from the upcoming record on the podcast! S1 Ep 400WR400: Joe Boy Rock of Machina II

E

It's the 400th episode of Witchpolice Radio, which means it's OF COURSE the one where I've lost my voice and am wheezing out my questions. Thankfully, the guest on this episode, [Joe Boy Rock](http://joeboyrock.bandcamp.com/releases) of local hip-hop duo [Machina II](http://soundcloud.com/machinaii/), has a lot of insightful things to say about the local music scene, rap, DIY, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba’s newest and most exciting country music festival, July 25-27, and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). S1 Ep 399WR399: Cory Falvo

E

It's an interview with Winnipeg comedian [Cory Falvo](http://www.instagram.com/corybantiasm/) about the upcoming Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival production, [Commando: The Radio Play](http://www.winnipegfringe.com/performer-detail.aspx?kw=Ditch+Water+Theatre). I don’t usually cover the Fringe Festival, because it’s kind of out of my wheelhouse, but this project has a classic Arnold Schwarzenegger flick turned into a radio play, AND Cory will be performing all the sound effects live with a pile of props. This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba’s newest and most exciting country music festival, July 25-27, and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). S1 Ep 398WR398: Henry Beckwith

E

It's a phoner with former Winnipegger [Henry Beckwith](http://www.henrytours.ca/), currently based in Toronto and touring Canada and the world as a front-of-house audio guy and tour manager for an impressive list of nationally-known artists (his clients include Basia Bulat, Dan Mangan, Wintersleep, Terra Lightfoot, American Football, and more). Henry and I played in a short-lived reggae band together about 15 years ago, and it has been cool to watch his progress over the years (from afar) as he went from a touring musician to a sound guy at clubs to the guy who runs tings on the road for well-known acts. This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba’s newest and most exciting country music festival, July 25-27, and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). S1 Ep 397WR397: Thick n' Sweaty

E

If this is your first time listening to Witchpolice Radio, turn back now! This isn't a regular interview with a local musician. It's a crossover episode with my friends Stefan and Shena of the brand-new [Thick n' Sweaty](http://thicknsweaty.podbean.com/) podcast, so the regular format is pretty much thrown out the window. We talk podcasting, Stefan’s history as a wrestler, as host of the now-defunct [Ever Sick Podcast](http://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/yua2j-390a6/Ever-Sick%21-Podcast-with-Stefan-Richard) and current gig in country music radio... ...plus how Thick n’ Sweaty got started, how Shena became interested in podcasting, their dynamic as a couple who host a show together, etc. If you want to listen to some pals hanging out on a back porch and talking shit, this is an episode for you. If you want the more journalistic style that's typical of the podcast, check out the [previous episode](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/377cda13ed2bea/), an interview with country singer Quinton Blair. Apologies for the microphone pops in the intro. This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba’s newest and most exciting country music festival, July 25-27, and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). S1 Ep 396WR396: Quinton Blair

E

[Quinton Blair](http://www.quintonblair.com/) is an award-winning country/folk singer-songwriter, but he's also a fantastic conversationalist – something that is reflected in his personal, localized, storytelling songs. Q hung out on the porch for some live performances and a great chat about songwriting, DIY, his new songs, appealing to a variety of audiences, and much more. This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba’s newest and most exciting country music festival, July 25-27, and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). S1 Ep 395WR395: Dustin Harder

E

Dustin Harder is a local singer-songwriter, best known for his [Prairie Soul](http://www.facebook.com/prairiesoulmusic/) project, but he's also – as he puts it – the energy behind two upcoming festivals at Hilltop Resort: [Heart of the Nation Music Festival](http://www.facebook.com/events/366881723888100/) (July 5-7) and [Festival 59 Blues](http://www.facebook.com/Festival59Blues/) (Aug. 9-11). We talk about the work that goes into both festivals, how Dustin got involved with the venue, his own music, the artists on the bill – at Heart of the Nation, 22 local bands for $44 tickets – and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://[[text](http://[text](http://))](http://)myparktheatre.com/). S1 Ep 394WR394: Brian Jacobs

E

It's a doughnut shop hangout with Morden country singer [Brian Jacobs](http://brianjacobsmusic.ca/)! Fun conversation about authenticity, trying to break into the Winnipeg music scene as an outsider, being the “old guy” among a bunch of younger artists, his newly-released album... and much more! This episode is brought to you by [Howl at the Moon](http://howlatthemoonfest.com/), Manitoba’s newest and most exciting country music festival, July 25-27, and by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). S1 Ep 392WR392: The Lovers

E

Guitarist Colin Jesson of local outfit [The Lovers](http://www.facebook.com/pg/handsomelousy) is on the podcast to talk about his band's upcoming record, the way their sound has changed from their initial rockabilly/cowpunk days (while retaining those elements). We also delve into his experience in the cover band scene, why he's still committed to playing music decades after first getting involved in Winnipeg's music community and much more. This is my first attempt at recording a phone conversation with the new gear, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. There's a bit of a hum in the background, which is mainly due to me using a really shitty cable to connect the phone to the recorder (my bad), but overall it's a marked improvement from my old recorder-between-me-and-a-speakerphone-and-hope-for-the-best method. This episode brought to you by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). S1 Ep 390WR390: Michael Falk

E

Michael Falk is the artistic director at [Jazz Winnipeg](http://www.jazzwinnipeg.com/), as well as the man behind [Head in the Sand Records](http://headinthesand.ca/) and the former frontman of [Les Jupes](http://lesjupes.bandcamp.com/)... among many other roles in the Winnipeg music scene. We talk about all of that, this year's Jazz Fest lineup, and much more on this episode. Full disclosure: I do [freelance work for Jazz Winnipeg](http://www.jazzwinnipeg.com/blog/2019/2/23/welcome-to-alleyways), although I don't think it affects this podcast in any conflict-of-interest-y way. I would've wanted to have Mike on the show regardless. Also: I tried out the new recording gear for this episode (thank you everyone). As you can hear, I have a bit more practicing to do. Mike came through great, but I sound a bit distant. I figure with every episode I do, I'll get more an more familiar with the recorder and things will start to sound better and better. This episode brought to you by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/)! S1 Ep 389WR389: WHY

E

It's a donut shop sit-down with all three members of long-running alt-rockers (or are they?) [WHY](http://www.whytheband.com/)! We talked about defining “alternative” in 2019, what success really means, the group’s long history and ‘90s roots, the new(ish), definitive lineup... and much more! This episode brought to you by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/)! Chris has spent years fronting rockers [Jekyll & the Hydes](http://www.facebook.com/JekyllandtheHydes/), and is now splitting his time between that band and his new, solo country project. We talk about being authentic to his own sound, and how he’s going to be that 80-year-old still performing at the bar whether anyone is showing up to listen or not! This episode brought to you by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/)! Fun chat with a new(ish) local band that has been generating a lot of buzz. These guys were recommended to me by a number of past guests and social media followers. This episode brought to you by our pals at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/)! A HUGE thanks goes out to everyone who has [supported the fundraiser](http://www.gofundme.com/witchpolice-radio-improvement-fund) so far. I’m raising $ to upgrade to better-quality recording gear, and the response has been phenomenal. Your support is greatly appreciated!
