Presser of the Week: Portland Cold Case Unit, The Wheatley's

The Portland Police Bureau Cold Case Unit will be reinstated thanks to a grant. In 2004, PPB formed a Cold Case Unit to use technological advances to review and investigate unsolved homicides dating back to the 1960s. Over the next 18 years, the Cold Case Unit reviewed more than 270 cases, clearing more than 50 of them. More than 30 individuals were charged with homicide-related crimes. In 2022, the Cold Case Unit was disbanded due to the reallocation of resources in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest, unprecedented retirements and resignations, and exponential increases in both homicides and gun-related crimes. In 2023, PPB applied for and received a grant through the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI). The $2.5 million grant will fund four detectives and provide $300,000 for advanced testing, including Forensic Genetic Genealogy (FGG). The Cold Case Unit will review not only unsolved homicides but also unsolved missing persons cases and unsolved violent crimes, such as robberies and assaults. “I feel very fortunate that we’re able to bring back the Cold Case Unit,” Chief Bob Day said. Clearing unsolved cases will hopefully provide some closure for victims’ families. Work in this space can also reduce crime by apprehending prolific violent offenders.” With hundreds of unsolved cases to examine, the Cold Case Unit will be tasked with prioritizing their caseload. The prioritization process will consider severity, with homicides being a priority. Violent crimes will be prioritized based on the time remaining under the statute of limitations. One of those cold cases is from August 29, 1988, police responded to a welfare check at 2612 N. Holman, which the granddaughter of the occupants of that residence called in. Police entered the residence, where they discovered the bodies of Robert Wheatley, 61, and Frieda Wheatley, 69, in the basement. The medical examiner determined the cause of death as strangulation. Detectives believe that the Wheatley’s died on August 27, 1988. It is apparent from the crime scene that the motive was robbery. There was no sign of forced entry. The home was ransacked, and a television set, ATM card, credit card, and the Wheatley’s light green 1979 Buick Regal were stolen. The ATM and credit cards were used extensively in Northeast, North, and Downtown Portland before Wheatley’s bodies were discovered. The Buick was recovered in a Jantzen Beach Shopping Center parking lot a few days later. Investigating Detectives believe that people in the community have information about this crime. Witnesses may contact Cold Case Homicide Unit investigators at (503) 823-0400. To remain anonymous, witnesses may provide information through Crime Stoppers of Oregon. Crime Stoppers of Oregon offers cash rewards for information reported to Crime Stoppers that leads to an arrest in any unsolved felony crime, and tipsters can remain anonymous. Information about this case or any unsolved felony crime may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,500. https://www.portlandoregon.gov/police/index.cfm?c=35696 Learn more about your ad choices. Tammy Zywicki

Source: FBI.gov On August 23, 1992, Tammy J. Zywicki departed Evanston, Illinois, for college in Grinnell, Iowa, where she was expected to arrive that evening. Later that day, Zywicki's car was found by an Illinois State Trooper and ticketed as being abandoned. On August 24, 1992, the vehicle was towed by the Illinois State Police. On that same evening, Zywicki's mother contacted the Illinois State Police and advised them that her daughter had not arrived at college. On September 1, 1992, Zywicki's body was located along Interstate Highway 44 (I-44) in rural Lawrence County, Missouri, which is located between Springfield and Joplin, Missouri. She had been stabbed to death. Zywicki was reportedly last seen with her car (shown above) at mile marker 83 on I-80 in Central Illinois between 3:10 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on August 23, 1992. It was also reported that a tractor/trailer was seen near Zywicki's vehicle during this period. The driver of the tractor/trailer is described as a white male between 35 and 40 years of age, over six feet tall, with dark, bushy hair. Some of the victim's personal property is known to be missing, including a Cannon 35mm camera and a musical wristwatch. The watch is Lorus brand, with a green umbrella on its face and a green band. The watch plays the tune "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head." Presser of the Week: New Mexico Cold Case Unit

The first-ever Cold Case Unit dedicated to solving homicide and sexual assault cases that have gone unsolved for years has been established by the New Mexico Department of Justice. Attorney General Torrez said that the unit's goal is to provide justice and closure for the victims' families, who have been living with uncertainty and pain. "We will not give up on these cases, no matter how much time has passed. We are working with law enforcement agencies across the state, and we welcome any public or agency input that can help us crack these cold cases," he said. The Cold Case Unit has six cases under investigation from the 1980s to the 2010s. The unit uses the latest forensic genetic genealogy techniques to generate new leads and identify suspects. The unit consists of three full-time, sworn law enforcement agents who are reviewing and investigating the cases. The details of the cases can be found on the website: https://nmag.gov/about-us/about-the-office/criminal-affairs/cold-case-unit/ Source: New Mexico Department of Justice - Press Conference: Cold Case Unit Announcement Learn more about your ad choices. Yogurt Shop 4 w/ Nic from True Crime Garage Pt 3

I wanted to take a look at this case. I just finished Beverly Lowry’s book, Who Killed These Girls? and it reinvigorated my interest in the case. I will do my best to do it justice, and next week, I may even have a special guest to discuss the case. December 6, 1991, started like most days in Austin, Texas, for Sarah and Jennifer Harbison. They prepared for school, packed their book bags, and headed off for the day. It was an overcast day for the city, with temperatures maxing out around 72. It was an excellent Texas Friday. Austin, Texas, in 1991, was coming into its own as a nationally known place where creativity can thrive. Austin is not only the capital of Texas but also holds the title of Live Music Capital of the World. In 1994, the city created the Austin Film Festival, and filmmakers and actors such as Mike Judge, Richard Linklater, and Matthew McConaughey call Austin home. Learn more about your ad choices. NEW: Bill Thomas on Colonial Parkway Murders Update Pt 2

UPDATE: Suspect Named in one of the Colonial Parkway Murders from the 1980s. Bill Thomas, the brother of victim Cathy Thomas, is back to discuss the latest update and suspect Alan W. Wilmer Sr., who died in 2017 at 63 years old. The Colonial Parkway murders are a series of unsolved killings that took place on a scenic road in Virginia, linking Yorktown and Jamestown, two historic places. The parkway preserves the natural and cultural beauty of the region and does not allow commercial vehicles or tolls. Drivers can admire the York and James Rivers and the changing seasons along the road. Bill Thomas, the brother of Cathy Thomas, one of the victims, has been fighting for justice and awareness. Crimemuseum.org reports that a serial killer may have killed eight people on the parkway, which is federal land. The FBI may get involved in the investigations, too. The killer went after couples or individuals who parked their cars in or near lover's lane spots. The victims were not robbed or sexually assaulted, indicating that the killer had a different reason. The police have questioned 150 suspects, but none of them fit the description of the killer. Sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWMlX8QXxUs 13NewsNow USA Today Learn more about your ad choices. Colonial Parkway Murders w/ Bill Thomas & Nic of True Crime Garage 2019 Pt 2

With the news of a break in the Colonial Parkway Murders, I wanted to re-release an interview I conducted with Bill Thomas, brother of victim Cathy Thomas & Nic Edwards of the True Crime Garage podcast, where we discussed the case, which was at a standstill in 2019. Some essential facts about the Colonial Parkway are if you have never had the pleasure of driving it or experiencing it on a class trip. According to the National Park Service https://www.nps.gov/colo/parkway.htm The Colonial Parkway is a twenty-three mile scenic roadway stretching from the York River at Yorktown to the James River at Jamestown. The road does it best to remind drivers of days past as the parkway does not allow semi trucks and is toll-free. As you meander though the parkway you are graced with beautiful views of the James and York rivers that run along the parkway. According to Triple A "redbuds and dogwoods decorate the roadway in spring, while fall brings an explosion of autumn colors” From an article in the Daily Press in 1990, the parkway is no place to be after dark ”At night, the mood changes. The trees form a tunnel of blackness, broken only if the moon is shining. There are no streetlights, no call boxes and no fast-food restaurants or convenience stores where a driver might find refuge in case of a breakdown”. The parkway is under the rangers' jurisdiction because it is federal land owned by the National Park Service When a serious crime is committed, the York County Sheriff's Department, the Williamsburg or James City police departments are called to assist, Neprash said. The parkway is federal land, the FBI may also become involved in investigations. Crimemuseum.org says, "police have questioned 150 suspects in connection to these four cases, but all have been cleared. The police attribute these eight murders to the same killer because of similarities in each case. All of the victims were killed at or near their car, the first three being found at known lover’s lane areas. None of the victims were robbed, and sexual assault did not appear to be a motive in any of the cases. The first and third murders were mere miles apart, and the second and fourth were committed about a half hour away from the Parkway. In 2018, the Facebook page Colonial Parkway Murders, which is run by Cathy’s brother Bill Thomas, and today's guest revealed that DNA had been found at 3 of the 4 crime scenes which could potentially conclusively link the cases and lead to an arrest. Colonial Parkway Murders Part 1 w/ Bill Thomas

With the news of a break in the Colonial Parkway Murders, I wanted to re-release an interview I conducted with Bill Thomas, brother of victim Cathy Thomas, where we discussed the case, which was at a standstill in 2019. The Sodder Family Christmas Mystery

This is the story of the Sodder family, who lost five of their children in a mysterious fire on Christmas Eve in 1945. I have based my account on a New York Post article from 1975, which reveals some of the odd details of this case. The children had opened their gifts earlier that night and were eager to play with them. Their parents went to sleep at 10:30 p.m. Around 1:30 a.m., Jennie smelled smoke and saw that their room was filled with it. The house was on fire. The Sodders managed to escape, but they could not find their five children. They were not outside, and there was no way to see them inside the burning house. The fire department declared that they had died in the fire. However, no remains, bones, or any evidence of human tissue were ever found in the ashes... The mystery remains unsolved... LISK w/ author Jesse P. Pollack Part 2

Jesse P. Pollack was born and raised in the garden state of New Jersey, and has served as a contributing writer for Weird NJ magazine since 2001. His first book, Death on the Devil’s Teeth, coauthored with Mark Moran, was published in 2015 to critical acclaim. Also an accomplished musician, Pollack’s soundtrack work has been heard on Driving Jersey, an Emmy-nominated PBS documentary series. He is married with two children, three dogs, and a couple of cats. The first set of remains was discovered in 2010 while police were searching for another woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert. It wouldn't be for another year when Gilbert's body would be found across the way on neighboring Oak Beach. Once Gilbert's body was recovered, the total number of bodies found was 11. Police said most of the women worked in prostitution and advertised on such services as Craigslist. When an independent autopsy was performed on Gilbert's body, they were able to determine she was killed due to homicidal strangulation. The reason for the second autopsy was the first one concluded Gilbert had died from drowning and drug overdose. The autopsy was able to show she did not die from a natural disease, drug overdose, or drowning. Gilbert had vanished after visiting a customer and was told to have freaked out and started banging on neighbor's doors, asking for help and saying people were trying to kill her. Sarah Pryor: 1985

Who Killed Sarah Pryor? I want to thank a listener for suggesting this story. I have done episodes on the case of Molly Bish and Holly Pirrainen, and the listener suggested I look into the case of Sarah Pryor. Another case connected loosely to the Pryor case is that of 16-year-old Cathy Malcolmson. Cathy was working at the IGA supermarket when she was abducted on her way home from work. The listener, who is from the Massachusetts area where these abductions took place, said there had been some talk that Sarah’s case may also be connected to Molly and Holly’s cases. I decided to look into the Pryor mystery and was surprised by what I found. One of the similarities I began to see was the area's geography and how close these incidents took place to one another. Sarah was taken an hour from where Holly went missing, but all three of these cases occurred just off the Massachusetts Turnpike. It may be a stretch to think these cases could be connected, but it doesn’t mean the idea should be discounted. Some books and documentaries talk about how the construction of the interstate enabled a new type of killer. Amy Mihaljevic

TIPS: 440-871-1234 The thing is, that October 27, 1989, was just like any other day in northeast Ohio up until those first reports of a missing girl from Bay Village hit the news around 10 o’clock. The city and the citizens felt like they had been punched in the gut. How could one of their own be taken right out from under the noses of the public, across from the police station nonetheless? As the days progressed, new information was being released regularly, with the most important being that of this phone caller who had potentially lured Amy to the plaza that Friday afternoon. The information about this phone call was given by two of Amy’s friends, who had been told of the plan on the meeting day. In speaking with Chief Spaetzel, these kids were able to provide a few very significant details, one of the most essential being that Amy was told she had $45 to spend and that if there was any money left over, she could also get a gift. Suppose you would like to help support this podcast. In that case, you can donate via the Venmo app with my username @bill-huffman-3. POLICE MISSED THE CHANCE TO STOP THE MAINE MASS SHOOTER Police across Maine were alerted just last month to “veiled threats” by the U.S. Army reservist who would go on to carry out the worst mass shooting in the state’s history, one of a string of missed red flags that preceded the massacre. Two local law enforcement chiefs told The Associated Press that a statewide awareness alert was sent in mid-September to be on the lookout for Robert Card after the firearms instructor made threats against his base and fellow soldiers. But after stepped-up patrols of the base and a visit to Card’s home – neither of which turned up any sign of him – they moved on. “We added extra patrols, we did that for about two weeks. ... The guy never showed up,” said Jack Clements, the police chief in Saco, home to the U.S. Army Reserve base where Card trained. - Associated Press WUSA9 WUSA9 Learn more about your ad choices. Amy Mihaljevic 34 years unsolved w/ Nic & The Captain Pt 1

Tips: 440-871-1234 or 1-800-CALL-FBI October 27, 2023, marks 34 years since 10-year-old Amy Renee Mihaljevic was abducted from the Bay Village Plaza in Bay Village, Ohio. Amy was lured to the plaza by a mysterious phone caller who called Amy at home and set up a time to go and buy her mom a gift for her new promotion at work. The problem was there was no promotion, and this person didn't work with her mom. The city freaked out at the idea of a child being kidnapped from their quiet & safe suburb of Cleveland. I was Amy's age and grew up in the neighboring city. We were inundated with Amy posters, Stranger Danger classes, and extra lessons on what to do when a stranger confronts you. Nic & the Captain host True Crime Garage, one of the world's most popular true crime podcasts, and they joined me in 2020 to discuss Amy's case. If you'd like to listen to their episodes about Amy, their catalog can be found on their website: https://www.trucrimegarage.com or wherever you get your podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices.
