This is the story of the Sodder family, who lost five of their children in a mysterious fire on Christmas Eve in 1945. I have based my account on a New York Post article from 1975, which reveals some of the odd details of this case.
The children had opened their gifts earlier that night and were eager to play with them. Their parents went to sleep at 10:30 p.m.
Around 1:30 a.m., Jennie smelled smoke and saw that their room was filled with it. The house was on fire.
The Sodders managed to escape, but they could not find their five children. They were not outside, and there was no way to see them inside the burning house. The fire department declared that they had died in the fire. However, no remains, bones, or any evidence of human tissue were ever found in the ashes...
The mystery remains unsolved...
