In the first of two Music segments: (17:45) I found an excerpt from a book I'm interested in, talking about the Jay-Z/NFL deal. And I thought, since Jay dropped a new track, full of classic Jay-Capitalist bars, it would be a good time to revisit the ordeal again. In the 2nd Music segment: (34:51) A favourite of the show, Andre Gee, talks about Phonte, Freddie Gibbs & ChHi The Prince and how Hip-Hop fans being all about sales and numbers have stifled some of the most influential people in Hip-Hop, making them mere footnotes. In the final segment & 2nd Life segment: (52:52) I said last week that I'd bring a piece on the Climate Crisis, and I delivered. But now, there have been two arrests connected to it and maybe we can finally get some answers. In the first of two Life segments: (19:24) The UK Government has once again bottled a whole sector, going from downgrading A-Level students final grades to U-Turning days after Results Day. But this has been coming for a while and luckily, the pandemic has given a spotlight to the bullshit. In Film/TV: (38:45) Netflix has once again shut down one of my favourite shows out right now, "Patriot Act w/Hasan Minhaj". Whilst its not surprising since the stage & live audience were so integral to the viewing experience, it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.Lastly, in the 2nd Life segment: (51:42) Most of us have suffered in 2020, but one thing is coming very soon is people being depressed if they're not already. Apparently, it's already beginning as depression amongst UK adults has doubled since March.Thank you for listening! And while the conversations around it are overwhelmingly positive, there's a significant part of it that I feel warrants a conversation. In Music - (26:38) The response to Megan Thee Stallion's incident has sadly been a modern one. Memes galore, 0 empathy, epitomising patriarchy & misogynoir. Along with nearly no men in the Hip-Hop-sphere showing support for Meg, it highlights how engrained misogynoir is in Hip-Hop.In Sports - (48:52) The College Football players of the PAC-12 Conference have recently penned a collective statement to highlight several grievances. Bomani Jones contacts some of the key players in the creation of this truly seismic stance. (Since recording, The players of the BIG 10 have also made a statement.) Wiley goes mask off.Google tells its employees to work from home until 2021.In Music: (9:52) The Ivor Novello & Mercury Prize nominations have dropped and there's a lot for me to be happy about. But of course, there's always a gripe to have.In the 1st of two Life segments: (23:55) Paulette Wilson, one of the loudest voices in the Windrush Scandal, has died aged 64. I felt like her name needed emphasis as if it wasn't for her, we might not have been aware of the scandal as early as we did.In Sports: (42:40) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is back with another one, this time, talking about racist owners of sports teams. Whilst they can't be forced to sell their stakes for their views, they can certainly be routinely chastised for it.Lastly, in the 2nd Life Segment: (53:55) The containment of Uighur Muslims by the Chinese Government has come into the news again, even though it hasn't stopped since the initial leaks in October last year. (& WG episode in November) The UK is talking about it, but nothing concrete as of yet.Vox' "Worldly" episode on the treatment of Uighurs.Thank you for listening! As someone that isn't completely educated on it all, I decided to read someone that is both black and Jewish. (For a great explainer I consumed after recording, hit up Vox' The Weeds episode on Anti-Semitism here) In the first of two Music segments: (30:34) Talib Kweli is a notorious Twitter user. He's consistently on it, usually beating down far-right tweeters and general dumbasses. But for the past two weeks, he's been going at one woman, originally defending his marriage & flagging colourism. But after two weeks, what could've been a genuine case study about colourism & character assassination, is now a cesspool of shit-flinging from both sides. In Sports: (42:05) The NBA has authorised a particular set of phrases that players can use to express their views towards social justice. But because the selection is decided by the league, is it really anything of worth? Or is it performative?Lastly, in the 2nd Music segment: (52:26) A fun story about crate-digging and why it is such a staple of Hip-Hop culture. (Or... Used to be anyways...)Thank you for listening! The UK will ban Huawei from UKs 5G network and have all existing kits by 2027.Banksy returns with lockdown themed pieces on a tube train. In the first of two Life segments: (9:27) China are starting to show muscle in Hong-Kong and introduce laws specifically aimed at people against the transition. In Sports: (25:38) The Washington NFL Team have finally gotten rid of their racist team name and logo. But while this is a win, the bigger picture shows that money runs these decisions and not basic morals. In the second Life segment: (37:00) We now know how often Black British History is mentioned in GCSE History. Spoiler alert, it's not great.Lastly, in Music: (50:47) DJ Akademiks has been able to go from fledgeling YouTube bullshit-thrower to commentator on the culture at large and a fanbase that allows suburban white kids to enjoy Hip-Hop in the worst way: As a circus where they don't care about the human aspects of anything. Ep.85 - "Time Is The Most Expensive Currency" W/ King Yanz
EThis interview was one of genuine surprise. Not from how I got it, but from how much depth there was to it all. I got much more than I expected. King Yanz has a fascinating story from start to FINNISH. (I'm sorry, I couldn't help it) From his early years in Finland, moving to London in his pre-teens and honing his craft in songwriting for years before even dropping a track. And in recent years, now that he's dropping work, his rise is steady and consistent. You'll enjoy this one, especially when you look at it in the biggest picture possible.Thank you for listening! In a one-to-one with Kerry Washington, Sandra Oh says the UK TV industry is behind in diversity. The city of Leicester goes into its own lockdown. In Film/TV: (8:52) Actor & Writer Daniel Lawrence Taylor delivers a great piece on how talk is cheap when it comes to the UK Television industry and how as a whole, need to fix up as it pertains to diversity. In Sports: (19:42) The Queen of Sprint, Dina Asher-Smith, comes through with a thoughtful column on how she's experienced racism and how education is the key to long-term progress. In Life: (35:11) Speaking of education! Somebody is already making moves to create a decolonised black University and I for one am gassed about this prospect.Lastly, in Music: (51:27) 6ix9ine & Nicki Minaj went No.1 with their collaborative effort "TROLLZ", which is another glaring example of how the music industry can't help but shamelessly money grab and inadvertently kill the essence of Hip-Hop in the process.Thank you for listening! Ep.83 - Little Britain, Black Women & Lockdown Easing
EIn a week where:Trump hosts "Cough-chella" Three people die & another three suffer injuries after a mass stabbing terror attack in Reading.Lewis Hamilton is starting a commission w/The Royal Academy of Engineering. But the story goes deeper than you think. In Music: (23:06) There have been a few events that have gone down in the past week that have got me thinking about how black men talk to black women. First was J.Cole's super odd & tone-deaf "Snow On The Bluff" which was directed to vocal learner Noname. The 2nd and more important event was between Ray BLK & Ambush Buzzworl. There are levels to this, but the overall theme is that we still don't listen to black women properly. In Sports: (39:53) The NBA is returning, all located in Orlando, in a "Bubble" format. While I understand the wanting to do all this, I can't turn my head completely away from basic logic.Lastly, in Life: (51:33) On July 4th, England (Not the rest of the UK) is opening up more to include Pubs, Restaurants, hairdressers etc. Why? Ep.82 - "Attatched To A True Purpose" W/ Martin Soaries
EFor the final interview of WG "Interview SZN", I hit up a good friend that has been consistently building himself and his own collective in the past few years and as someone looking from afar, can't help but be impressed.Architect of Basketball Society, Martin Soaries, comes in to give his story so far. You'll be hard-pressed to find a person that eats, sleeps & breathes basketball and that's exactly what you get here. You also get a person that's grown up with strong morals and discipline, a solid background in writing about sports, music & film (with questionable superhero opinions) and just overall a good dude, making his imprint however he can.Be sure to check out Basketball Society. Ep.79 - "Hey! Dipyramid!" W/ Diarmuid Goggins (Part 1)
EOne of my favourite TV shows in recent years has been "Bulletproof", the action-packed, banter-filled cop show with Black British OGs Ashley Walters & Noel Clarke. Season 2 came through this year and was an entertaining watch from start to finish. I said something in this vein on Twitter soon after finishing the season and someone replied to my tweet. It just so happened to be the director of the first three episodes of "Bulletproof" S2.You can see where I'm going with this. I jumped at the chance, asked him to come through and not only did Irish-born & raised Diarmuid Goggins accept the invitation, but he also gave me some leeway so we could get a good old 2-parter going! In this part, we get into his beginnings, his career path up to now and end on some very existential talk. Which you know I love. Thank you for listening! EA few years ago, I saw a show on BET that was helmed by the late, great John Singleton. It was called "Rebel" and starred an actress I've never seen until then. I watched the one and only season and loved it. Years later, I finally get to talk to the lead of that show and get to know her story. Danielle Moné Truitt has done it all when it comes to acting. Voice, TV, Film and especially Theatre. Ms Truitt comes through to talk about her beginnings, her singing background, how acting became her career and, of course, her Top 5. Thank you for listening! Ep.74 - "In America..." W/ Dave James (Part 1)
EInterview SZN continues with another Friend of 5E coming through! I interviewed Dave James over two years ago, he was one of the earlier ones and since he has been a visible supporter of my journey. I for one was excited to have him on and he was the same.We were enjoying our time chopping up (and consistently de-railing the conversation) that we went way past two hours and could've easily chatted for another one. But we decided to call it at two. Topics on Part 1 of our conversation include my accent, Corona privilege, the RZA/Preemo battle & an amazing story about Dave's early days with Ari Lennox.Thank you for listening! Ep.71 - "Hackney Market, School & McDonalds" W/ Ric Flo (Part 1)
ELast year I went to see the legendary Masta Ace @ The Jazz Cafe. Supporting him was a trio hailing from Bournemouth that set the tone so nicely with their Hip-Hop style. I've been a fan of Jungle Brown ever since. And I'm so blessed to give you this interview where I talk to 1/3 of the group. Ric Flo, lyricist & graphic designer comes through to talk with so much detail that I had to split the interview into two parts! In this half, we talk about his beginnings, how he grew up as a product of 'farming', how he found escape and purpose in drawing & writing rhymes and how he went from a solo act in the South of England to being a member of the group that we now know as Jungle Brown. Part 2 coming right up... Stay tuned.Thank you for listening! Ep.70 - "In My Heart I'm West Coast, Forever" W/ NappyHigh
EThere are some producers that have this ability to make you vibe to something you have no connection to. That change your mood as soon as you press play. This producer, hailing from Los Angeles, has been doing that for me in 2020 so far and I'm blessed to hear his story. For this episode of "What's Good", I talk to NappyHigh about his beginnings, his approach to production, the influences that he wears on his sleeve and, of course, his Top 5. Ep.69 - "100 Years Old & Still Sue His Ass" W/ ToeKnee Tee
EContinuing our interview SZN, we go to Pirate Studios in Earlsfield, London to meet with a true independent artist. Hailing from the US, ToeKnee Tee is the least 'homegrown' artist I've met so far. Instead of going the usual route an artist does by hitting up local shows and gaining a following, Tee instead jetted off to Australia and now around Europe going where the gigs are and making connections along the way. It's a fascinating path and I'm proud to hear his story. We also take the conversation to many other places such as sampling, independence and ethics of the music business. Thank you for listening! Ep.68 - "Everything & Nothing" W/ Tianna Madison
EIn the second interview of three, I catch up with a modern-day legend of Athletics. Multiple Olympic Gold Medallist & World Record holder Tianna Bartoletta.I interviewed her over two years ago and since then, Tianna has made a concerted effort to elevate in life as well as a professional athlete. Becoming a practitioner of Yoga, writing a memoir and giving back to the athletes of the future. The first paragraph of platitudes is what people will know off the bat, but it's her humility & passion for growth that makes her inspirational in more ways than one. Regardless if you follow Athletics or not, there's plenty of gems to take here.Thank you for listening! Ep.67 - IWD2020 Special W/ Ms Melody Monroe
EHappy International Women's Day everyone! And also happy Women's History Month. For those that don't know, this has been a tradition of mine since the Student Radio days. (Shouts to the guys at Radio Sonar who recently did a 24hr Stream for charity!) Back then, it was just a gesture but now that we're in Podcast form, I have time to really think about what to do.This year, I wanted to kill two birds with one stone. I've recently been wanting to catch up with some of my 'Friends of 5E', basically people that I've interviewed for the site and I have not one but two that were down to talk to me during this period of celebrating women. For this episode, I talk with Ms Melody Monroe about how she's been since our initial interview, COVID-19, (Coronavirus) being black in the US, when is she dropping new music(?!) and, of course, her Top 5. To the point of major events now being postponed. In Film/TV: (25:25) I recently saw "Just Mercy" and plan to see "Parasite". Both films that came up in the Festival scene but only one garnered Oscar attention and because of that, the attention of the general public. Unfortunately, these two films exemplify why awards are important. In Music: (41:11) The father of Hip-Hop, DJ Kool Herc and his sister, Cindy "First Lady of Hip-Hop" Campbell, went to Jamaica and discussed not just how their roots were essential for the birth of Hip-Hop, but how Hip-Hop & Jamaica should be intertwined with a museum in Jamaica. Finally, in the 2nd Life segment: (50:47) I've said many a time that Alexa and all of them smart speakers are listening to you. TV Host Caroline Flack dies aged 40.Chinese people in the UK are being abused over COVID-19 (Coronavirus)Dave & Stormzy own the BRITs but calls of gender diversity still ring.Locust plagues are currently engulfing East Africa. In Music: (6:23) Dave & Stormzy are just some of the names that are proving that you can be overtly political, racially aware AND get mainstream love. This is something that we've seen before in the US and Hip-Hop but this is new for the UK music scene and it's only the beginning. In the 1st of two Sports segments: (24:26) The NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago has been and gone. It was a rousing success compared to previous years. The game itself, with a new and experimental format, gained a lot of praise which could give a signal as to how the NBA can change in the future. In the 2nd Sports segment: (35:47) The OJ Simpsons & Tiger Woods of the US Sports world are known for their sports dominance (amongst other things) but socially, they're known as people that tried (and succeeded) at trying not to "be black". Howard Bryant, in an excerpt from his new book, explores sports stars that remove their black identity.Lastly, in Film/TV: (52:52) Major & minor Arts Bodies across England are being threatened by the Arts Council of England (ACE) for lacking diversity. The Government is green-lighting HS2.In the first of two Life segments: (11:35) The Home Office is going to deport 50 more people as they still haven't learned from the original Windrush Scandal. Tottenham MP David Lammy has been at the forefront in voicing up and continues to do so.In Film/TV: (26:37) We all heard the conversations about women being underrepresented in the Award ceremonies of note, but the reasons that people put on women (and especially women of colour) as to why they shouldn't be represented are practically non-existent now.In the 2nd Life segment: (40:30) The furore around Gayle King has cooled down a little since her interview with Lisa Leslie. Snoop Dogg was highly prevalent in the anger towards Gayle and that gives me pause as to why Snoop lashed out with such vitriol. Does he love Kobe that much? Or does he hate black women? Lastly, in Music: (55:06) Black music executives like Diddy & Jay-Z have been celebrated in recent years as becoming visible figures on the peak of the music industry mountain. But if you zoom in on what they're actually standing on, the shine gets muddied. Thank you for listening! I wanted to pay respects to a sports legend; negative & positive. I also got help on words by Friend of 5E, Tianna Bartoletta. In Sports: (32:14) CoCo Gauff is proving major by major that she's not a fluke and deserves a spot amongst the best in Women's Tennis. But how long will it be until fans & sports media move the goalposts as they did with Venus, Serena and many other black sports stars that dominated their game?Lastly, in Life: (45:25) The Grenfell Inquiry slugs along but a month was wasted due to the government adding someone who had a previous relationship with the people that made the cladding that caused all this.Thank you for listening! ESo for the past few weeks, I along with the rest of you have been seeing the tragic fires that have been going through Australia. Lives have been lost, homes have been burnt to the ground. But as I've been seeing the coverage on the news & "Social" Media, I have felt like there's much more to this than a national emergency. So I brought on Hip-Hop By The Numbers' & Diggin' In The Digits co-host Ben Carter to help me understand everything that has been going on in Australia. The levels of ignorance will deafen you.In the 2nd Life segment: (39:50) The Windrush scandal stories are becoming more & more frequent. This time, the incompetence of The Home Office is affecting a family three generations deep. Lastly, in Film/TV: (51:45) It's been a revolutionary year for Film as a whole. In Film/TV: (41:13) I've been fascinated with Tyler Perry and how people see him. Most see him as a Trailblazer who has "literally built his own table". But does the fact that his creative works are polarising at best demand a tighter eye before hailing him?Lastly, in the final Sports segment: (54:56) The finalists for the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year have dropped and whilst every one of the six has a great chance, there are two clear favourites for me personally. But not just for his play, he should be in the conversation because of his principles and respect for his predecessors. And his reason for finally accepting his place in the HoF is proof. In the 2nd Music segment: (51:22) I spent my Saturday going to London and seeing one of my favourite Hip-Hop duos, Blu & Exile. But that wasn't all that happened as I explain in an omitted part from the latest episode of "Diggin' In The Digits".And finally, in Life: (1:02:53) The NY Times has released a 400+ page leak of official documents from the Chinese Government over the recent treatment of the Uighur minority. Put simply, they're Chinese Muslims, they're being contained in camps and it's been going on for three years. This led me to think about how much empathy we have and whether the ability to gain knowledge on world events such as this has stretched our ability to empathise thin. Thank you for listening! Ep.51 - Remembrance, Camp Flog Gnaw & CGI Actors
EIn a week where:Australian police find $200 million of meth hidden inside Sriracha bottlesRemembrance Day has been & goneIn Life: (8:03) Since Remembrance Day has been and gone, I think it's worth to try and rethink how we remember history and how we commemorate victories and only victories. In Music: (20:20) Carter Fowler of Central Sauce joins the show to talk about Camp Flog Gnaw, Drake being booed and all the angles to look at the event from. Including "Stan Culture" & what an artist should do when they know their fanbase is trash. Finally, In Film/TV: (58:24) Some filmmakers are going to use James Dean as a CGI foundation in their film. This poses the question about "CGI Actors" and whether it should be embraced or put away under lock & key.Thank you for listening! AMPAS DQ's Nigerian entry "Lionheart" for having too much English dialogue.Jacob Rees-Mogg apologises for comments about Grenfell. In the 1st Life topic: (11:45) The richest 1% are acting as if a Labour government would end their lives. They genuinely believe Jeremy "Allotment" Corbyn is the boogeyman, licking his lips at the potential of rightly taxing the 1% more. And act as if they pay taxes here anyways...In Film/TV: (22:48) The Biopic "Harriet" is finally out! But not everybody is into it. African Americans aren't messing with it. Partly because of the faux "British Invasion" played in this case by Cynthia Erivo, but also because the film just isn't all that good.In Sports: (39:32) Lewis Hamilton is one or two good seasons off becoming the Greatest F1 Driver of All-Time. But with his 6th World Championship now locked up. Why isn't British sports media hailing this man? The case could be made that he's the greatest sportsperson the UK has ever had!Lastly, in the 2nd Life topic: (52:39) Bristol University has hired Olivette Otele to be a Professor on the History of Slavery, an unprecedented step forward in the fight to educate University students on the long (swept-under-rug) history of the UK's involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade.Thank you for listening! Let me repeat. Our government, in preparation to leave the EU and form a trade deal with the US, are holding talks with US Pharmaceutical companies, behind closed doors. In Film/TV: (23:56) Netflix has been experimenting with giving Android phone users the ability to watch their shows/films at 1.5x speed. This has rubbed filmmakers the wrong way to the point of boycotting Netflix. I have a feeling that'll be a short-lived experiment. In Life: (34:50) Professor Kehinde Andrews is back on WG with an enlightening piece on the true racially systemic nature that Universities in the UK have. Finally, in Music: (49:22) NPR's "Tiny Desk Concerts" is becoming a must-attend spot for artists promoting their work. Ep.48 - Meghan Markle, NBA Picks & Tulsa 1921
In a week where:Politics is fucked.A man is arrested in Essex after police found 39 bodies in a lorry container. In the 1st of 2 Life topics: (6:45) Meghan Markle (Or the Duchess of Sussex for those who care about Royal stuff) has been going through it. Tabloids & British TV media popping shots, suing said tabloids, doing all that Royal stuff, all in the same year she has a baby. A recent 1-to-1 interview showed her clearly struggling mentally and I felt like this was worth talking about, even though I'm not into Royal matters in any way. In Film/TV: (20:35) You may remember the episode where I talked about Martin Scorsese and his comments on the MCU. Well, since then, a few more people on both sides have chimed in, but I found an Op-Ed that perfectly put all of this in perspective. Put simply, everyone, to a degree, is right. In Sports: (35:05) The NBA is BACK and you know your boy is hyped. It's already two days in as of the release of this episode, but one game won't affect my predictions for the season ahead.Lastly, in the 2nd Life topic: (51:41) The new adaptation of "Watchmen" has begun and star of the show Regina King shared a very fascinating article on the Tulsa 1921 Race Riots, which is loosely covered in the show.Thank you for listening! In Sports: (6:16) Believe it or not. This isn't the first time this decade that black England players have been subjected to clear cut racism in Bulgaria. It happened in 2011. So when is enough, enough? In Music: (18:14) Rihanna has made it clear that she doesn't mess with the NFL. But the backstory between the boss woman & the trash league goes back a decade. In Film/TV: (31:20) I recently saw "Gemini Man" that stars Will Smith and I genuinely enjoyed it! So I thought it was time to talk about Will Smith, not from a film standpoint but in how he's not just about films anymore. He's diversified his portfolio in a great way in response to his cold streak in the box office.Lastly, in Life: (46:07) A report has exposed Google to be donating money to organisations that actively deny the Climate Crisis. And it's not just people that have those nutjob sites that we laugh at in meme form, we're talking about people that have influenced the Presidency of the United States. Thank you for listening! EIn a week where:Diahann Carroll Dies aged 84Katarina Johnson-Thompson wins World Championship Heptathlon Gold.Tyler Perry opens the first US Film Studio owned by an African-American.Y'all STILL buy The Sun?!In Film/TV: (6:53) Martin Scorsese gets uppity with the concept of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which forced Scorsese fan James Gunn to respond. Another response was Samuel L Jackson, who took a more... Samuel L Jackson approach. In Sports: (19:36) Who knew that one tweet from an NBA General Manager would cause a geo-politically existential outrage! Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey, who's team is VERY rooted to China and their star player James Harden "LOVES" China, decided to show solidarity with Hong-Kong. Background of the politics behind that aside, (Hit up previous WG episodes for a refresh on Hong-Kong) China is pissed, Chinese basketball fans are pissed, the NBA has had to lowkey grovel to China (because money) & now Texan politicians are popping shots at the NBA for the lowkey grovelling. It's... A lot.In Life: (37:17) A little story of Euzhan Palcy, who was the first black woman to direct a Hollywood film. The reason why you may not have heard of her? It's because she left pretty early in her career due to Hollywood being Hollywood. And lastly, (45:33) since there are now three Podcasts under the #5EPN, I thought I'd give a progress report, including some personal thoughts as the year & decade reaches it's closing stages. Ep.45 - Athletics, Jennifer Lopez & Black Radicalism
EDue to a consistently busy week, I didn't do an "In a week where". But hopefully, y'all watched the news and read like you should be doing...In the 1st of two Life topics: (4:58) The Verge is back on Facebook's neck again. After publishing a damning report on Facebook's outsourcing of "Content Moderators" a few months back, they're back with a leaked internal FB meeting with Mark Zuckerberg where he talks about the threat of an Elizabeth Warren Presidency, competing against TikTok & the aforementioned Verge story. In Film & Music(???) - (23:27) Jennifer Lopez is a classic "Triple Threat". She can act, sing and dance. But that is sometimes overshadowed by how fine she is. Her body is something that has been gazed at since Day 1, but her performance in "Hustlers" is subverting that gaze on a subconscious level and maybe the "boss move" of the year.In Sports: (35:53) I have been glued to every second of the IAAF World Athletics Championships, but unfortunately, the negatives are too large to ignore. Being held in Doha, Qatar, where there is close to no Athletics pedigree, where they had to move back the entire thing due to Qatar's heat, where the winners of the Women's 100m are doing victory laps in front of a few hundred people in a 20,000+ stadium... It's clear that the IAAF gave Qatar these Championships because of money and have pimped out the athletes for one of the worst hosted Championships, in any sport. The IAAF needs to change.Lastly, in the 2nd Life segment: (54:16) Author Kehinde Andrews gives us 10 Books about Black Radicalism. Something that has been maligned & misunderstood for decades.Thank you for listening! DJ & Radio Personality Sophie K knows all too well about all of that and then some. And finally, the show finishes with an interview with Friend of #5EUK, Rize. (42:26) I interviewed Rize last year and since then he has moved out West to Los Angeles from Colorado and has consistently put out work since 2019 began.
