For the IG meme page "Daquan", which has recently sold for $85 Million, the identity of the Canadian-Ethiopian founder, even though the page is now owned by Warner Music. In the first of two Film/TV segments: (21:41) Black British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir has recently gotten roles to portray not just Barack Obama, but Malcolm X. As you can imagine, the African-American/Black British diaspora argument was reignited again. Ben-Adir felt the need to talk about it and garnered a detailed response from a respected vet, Wendell Pierce. In the second Film/TV segment: (39:39) The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science (The people who do The Oscars) recently dropped new diversity/inclusion requirements for any film that wants to get nominated. And while it is a great gesture, it's merely salad dressing and doesn't address the roots of the problems.Lastly, in the second Life segment: (53:22) An AI wrote an Op-ed, to convince humans that AI isn't a threat... As someone that isn't completely educated on it all, I decided to read someone that is both black and Jewish. (For a great explainer I consumed after recording, hit up Vox' The Weeds episode on Anti-Semitism here) In the first of two Music segments: (30:34) Talib Kweli is a notorious Twitter user. He's consistently on it, usually beating down far-right tweeters and general dumbasses. But for the past two weeks, he's been going at one woman, originally defending his marriage & flagging colourism. But after two weeks, what could've been a genuine case study about colourism & character assassination, is now a cesspool of shit-flinging from both sides. In Sports: (42:05) The NBA has authorised a particular set of phrases that players can use to express their views towards social justice. Ep.79 - "Hey! Dipyramid!" W/ Diarmuid Goggins (Part 1)
EOne of my favourite TV shows in recent years has been "Bulletproof", the action-packed, banter-filled cop show with Black British OGs Ashley Walters & Noel Clarke. Season 2 came through this year and was an entertaining watch from start to finish. I said something in this vein on Twitter soon after finishing the season and someone replied to my tweet. It just so happened to be the director of the first three episodes of "Bulletproof" S2.You can see where I'm going with this. I jumped at the chance, asked him to come through and not only did Irish-born & raised Diarmuid Goggins accept the invitation, but he also gave me some leeway so we could get a good old 2-parter going! Ep.74 - "In America..." W/ Dave James (Part 1)
EInterview SZN continues with another Friend of 5E coming through! I interviewed Dave James over two years ago, he was one of the earlier ones and since he has been a visible supporter of my journey. I for one was excited to have him on and he was the same.We were enjoying our time chopping up (and consistently de-railing the conversation) that we went way past two hours and could've easily chatted for another one. But we decided to call it at two. Topics on Part 1 of our conversation include my accent, Corona privilege, the RZA/Preemo battle & an amazing story about Dave's early days with Ari Lennox.Thank you for listening! Ep.73 - "The Aim Is To Change The Focus" W/ DEACON
EA couple of years ago I was put onto DEACON, an artist with an effortless style and a penchant for storytelling.Since interviewing him November '18, he dropped his EP "Cotton Wolf" and more recently, his Mixtape "Polaroid Nudes". He also started his own monthly open mic "Blank Space" in his native Tooting. In this catch-up, we talk about the lockdown "which dropped a couple of days before our recording", barbers, the aforementioned projects, life as a creative, getting a team and of course, his Top 5.Thank you for listening! Ep.72 - "Creativity Is Figuring Out The Puzzle" W/ Ric Flo (Part 2)
EPart 2 of my conversation with Ric Flo goes out of the personal and more into the professional. We gained from Part 1 why he got into music, in Part 2, we get into the work itself and the industry/landscape as a whole. We touch on the female/male & braggadocio/gem-dropping dichotomies in Hip-Hop, the pluses & minuses of working in a group, life as a solo independent, the benefits of signing a deal, what he has got in store for the rest of 2020 & of course, his Top 5. Thanks to Ric Flo once again for the time. You can follow him on most platforms @RicFloMusic.Thank you for listening! Ep.71 - "Hackney Market, School & McDonalds" W/ Ric Flo (Part 1)
ELast year I went to see the legendary Masta Ace @ The Jazz Cafe. Supporting him was a trio hailing from Bournemouth that set the tone so nicely with their Hip-Hop style. I've been a fan of Jungle Brown ever since. And I'm so blessed to give you this interview where I talk to 1/3 of the group. Ric Flo, lyricist & graphic designer comes through to talk with so much detail that I had to split the interview into two parts! In this half, we talk about his beginnings, how he grew up as a product of 'farming', how he found escape and purpose in drawing & writing rhymes and how he went from a solo act in the South of England to being a member of the group that we now know as Jungle Brown. Part 2 coming right up... Stay tuned.Thank you for listening! Ep.70 - "In My Heart I'm West Coast, Forever" W/ NappyHigh
EThere are some producers that have this ability to make you vibe to something you have no connection to. That change your mood as soon as you press play. This producer, hailing from Los Angeles, has been doing that for me in 2020 so far and I'm blessed to hear his story. For this episode of "What's Good", I talk to NappyHigh about his beginnings, his approach to production, the influences that he wears on his sleeve and, of course, his Top 5. Ep.69 - "100 Years Old & Still Sue His Ass" W/ ToeKnee Tee
EContinuing our interview SZN, we go to Pirate Studios in Earlsfield, London to meet with a true independent artist. Hailing from the US, ToeKnee Tee is the least 'homegrown' artist I've met so far. Instead of going the usual route an artist does by hitting up local shows and gaining a following, Tee instead jetted off to Australia and now around Europe going where the gigs are and making connections along the way. It's a fascinating path and I'm proud to hear his story. We also take the conversation to many other places such as sampling, independence and ethics of the music business. Thank you for listening! Ep.68 - "Everything & Nothing" W/ Tianna Madison
EIn the second interview of three, I catch up with a modern-day legend of Athletics. Multiple Olympic Gold Medallist & World Record holder Tianna Bartoletta.I interviewed her over two years ago and since then, Tianna has made a concerted effort to elevate in life as well as a professional athlete. Becoming a practitioner of Yoga, writing a memoir and giving back to the athletes of the future. The first paragraph of platitudes is what people will know off the bat, but it's her humility & passion for growth that makes her inspirational in more ways than one. Regardless if you follow Athletics or not, there's plenty of gems to take here.Thank you for listening! Ep.67 - IWD2020 Special W/ Ms Melody Monroe
EHappy International Women's Day everyone! And also happy Women's History Month. For those that don't know, this has been a tradition of mine since the Student Radio days. (Shouts to the guys at Radio Sonar who recently did a 24hr Stream for charity!) Back then, it was just a gesture but now that we're in Podcast form, I have time to really think about what to do.This year, I wanted to kill two birds with one stone. I've recently been wanting to catch up with some of my 'Friends of 5E', basically people that I've interviewed for the site and I have not one but two that were down to talk to me during this period of celebrating women. For this episode, I talk with Ms Melody Monroe about how she's been since our initial interview, COVID-19, (Coronavirus) being black in the US, when is she dropping new music(?!) and, of course, her Top 5. Ep.66 - Coronavirus, Amazon Alexa & DJ Kool Herc
EIn a week where:A 3-pack of Supreme Oreos are on the resell market for $52K.Tyson Fury beats Deontay Wilder via TKO in Round 7.Katherine Johnson, NASA Mathematician & subject of "Hidden Figures" dies at 101. Harvey Weinstein is found guilty on two of the five counts of charges in his trial. Third-degree rape & criminal sexual assault in the first degree.Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak who was ousted during the Arab Spring dies aged 91.An independent inquiry concludes that Police & Politicians 'turned a blind eye' to child sexual abuse claims. The Tokyo Olympics could potentially be moved or postponed altogether. In the 1st of two Life segments: (9:51) COVID-19 (or 'Coronavirus') is continuing to spread and while people have been extra vigilant, it's still spreading. To the point of major events now being postponed. In Film/TV: (25:25) I recently saw "Just Mercy" and plan to see "Parasite". Both films that came up in the Festival scene but only one garnered Oscar attention and because of that, the attention of the general public. Unfortunately, these two films exemplify why awards are important. In Music: (41:11) The father of Hip-Hop, DJ Kool Herc and his sister, Cindy "First Lady of Hip-Hop" Campbell, went to Jamaica and discussed not just how their roots were essential for the birth of Hip-Hop, but how Hip-Hop & Jamaica should be intertwined with a museum in Jamaica. Finally, in the 2nd Life segment: (50:47) I've said many a time that Alexa and all of them smart speakers are listening to you. Now, I have evidence. You may apologise and never invite me to your home if you own one...Thank you for listening! Ep.65 - Black British Music, NBA All-Star & Black Identity
EIn a week where:Manchester City is banned from the Champions League for two years over financial fair play rules.Armand Duplantis breaks the Indoor Pole Vault WR twice in two competitions, the latest in Glasgow. TV Host Caroline Flack dies aged 40.Chinese people in the UK are being abused over COVID-19 (Coronavirus)Dave & Stormzy own the BRITs but calls of gender diversity still ring.Locust plagues are currently engulfing East Africa. In Music: (6:23) Dave & Stormzy are just some of the names that are proving that you can be overtly political, racially aware AND get mainstream love. This is something that we've seen before in the US and Hip-Hop but this is new for the UK music scene and it's only the beginning. In the 1st of two Sports segments: (24:26) The NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago has been and gone. It was a rousing success compared to previous years. The game itself, with a new and experimental format, gained a lot of praise which could give a signal as to how the NBA can change in the future. In the 2nd Sports segment: (35:47) The OJ Simpsons & Tiger Woods of the US Sports world are known for their sports dominance (amongst other things) but socially, they're known as people that tried (and succeeded) at trying not to "be black". Howard Bryant, in an excerpt from his new book, explores sports stars that remove their black identity.Lastly, in Film/TV: (52:52) Major & minor Arts Bodies across England are being threatened by the Arts Council of England (ACE) for lacking diversity. The repercussions? Cut funding.Thank you for listening! Ep.64 - Windrush Deportation, Women In Film & Snoop Dogg
EIn a week where:Parasite wins four Oscars, making history every step of the way.Coronavirus continues to spread across the world. An Australian High court rules that Aboriginals are not 'Aliens' and cannot be deported. The Government is green-lighting HS2.In the first of two Life segments: (11:35) The Home Office is going to deport 50 more people as they still haven't learned from the original Windrush Scandal. Tottenham MP David Lammy has been at the forefront in voicing up and continues to do so.In Film/TV: (26:37) We all heard the conversations about women being underrepresented in the Award ceremonies of note, but the reasons that people put on women (and especially women of colour) as to why they shouldn't be represented are practically non-existent now.In the 2nd Life segment: (40:30) The furore around Gayle King has cooled down a little since her interview with Lisa Leslie. Snoop Dogg was highly prevalent in the anger towards Gayle and that gives me pause as to why Snoop lashed out with such vitriol. Does he love Kobe that much? Or does he hate black women? Lastly, in Music: (55:06) Black music executives like Diddy & Jay-Z have been celebrated in recent years as becoming visible figures on the peak of the music industry mountain. But if you zoom in on what they're actually standing on, the shine gets muddied. Thank you for listening!
