Ep 127127: No more Noble - ft. Tracy Tombides
West Ham legend Mark Noble sent an open letter to Hammers fans on Tuesday confirming he has signed a one-year contract extension at London Stadium but that next season will be his last in claret and blue. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to discuss Noble's contributions to the club during his 17 year spell with his boyhood club, what the future holds and whether he should have a statue erected in his honour. The Irons beat Leeds 2-0 on Monday night in altogether unconvincing fashion but nonetheless, the three points still keep the East Londoners in the hunt for an unlikely Champions League spot. The lads are also joined by Dylan Tombides' mum and DT38 Foundation founder Tracy for the Betway charity bet section to mark what would have been Dylan's 27th birthday on Monday. Will, Tom and James make their selections for the Manchester United game at Old Trafford on Sunday before sports journalist and Red Devils fan Matt Beadle dials in for the opposition view. Tom Edwards is quizmaster for Name That Game before The Sun's Isabelle Barker breaks down West Ham Women's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea and gives her opinion on whether they'll be relegated from the WSL having dropped to bottom of the league. Ep 126126: RIP Glenn Roeder ft. John Moncur & Tony Carr
West Ham fans were rocked by the news of former manager Glenn Roeder's death on from a brain tumour on Sunday aged 65. Glenn managed the Hammers between 2001 and 2003 after initially being appointed as a coach by Harry Redknapp. The Irons finished seventh in his first season in charge but were unfortunately relegated during his second campaign during which he collapsed after a game against Middlesbrough - the first showing of the tumour. Glenn has been fondly remembered by people across the game and Will Pugh, Tom Edwards and James Jones are joined by John Moncur and Tony Carr who played under and worked alongside the Woodford born boss. The pair pay touching tributes to the mild-mannered Roeder. As well as remembering Roeder, the boys look back to the defeat at Man City game and Will and James go head to head over Vladimir Coufal's reaction to the loss. The lads make their Betway charity bet selections. Leeds fan Kieran Benn from The Sun dials in to give a detailed analysis of his team's visit to London Stadium on Monday night and once again the boys are split down the middle over whether Marcelo Bielsa is as good as people say he is. James is quizmaster for Name That Game. And before saying goodbye the boys look ahead to Chelsea's visit to the West Ham Women on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who listens and downloads every week. Ep 125125: Ta-ta Tottenham ft. West Ham legend Tony Cottee
West Ham beat bitter rivals Tottenham 2-1 at London Stadium on Sunday to move FOURTH in the Premier League. FOURTH! Whether the Hammers can cling on to that last Champions League place remains to be seen but these moments have been at least five years in the waiting since the move from Upton Park and every West Ham fan deserves to enjoy them. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to revel in the glow of a victory over Spurs and also to chat just how far this team can go under David Moyes. The boys heap praise on Tomas Soucek, Vladimir Coufal, Jesse Lingard, Lukasz Fabianski and David Moyes after a win that meant so much to the team and the fans. West Ham’s legendary former striker Tony Cottee dials in for an exclusive interview to celebrate, reminisce and look ahead to the Irons’ visit to Man City. And he also calls on the club to extend Mark Noble’s contract for another year to ensure he gets a proper send off from fans. The lads make their picks for this week’s Betway charity bets after Tom came agonisingly close against Spurs. And Man City fan Ste Tudor joins the lads to look ahead to Saturday’s clash with the Hammers at the Etihad. Will is in the hot-seat for popular quiz Name That Game. And the lads reflect on a quiet week for the West Ham Women. Thanks very much for listening. Please SUBSCRIBE to the pod if you like what we do, give us five stars and leave us a nice review. Ep 124124: Champions League planning - ft. Hammers Utd & West Ham Clips
West Ham beat Sheffield United 3-0 at London Stadium without getting out of third gear on Monday night. Declan Rice coolly dispatched a penalty after Jesse Lingard was wiped out and then tried to take the spot kick ahead of Dec. The Hammers briefly went fourth before Chelsea's win a few hours later but once again things are hunky dory in East London. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to plan the European tour for next season which is definitely going to happen and the lads decide which of Europe's giants they want to face in the group stage. Iconic mastermind of West Ham's alternative commentary Twitter account 'West Ham Clips' joins the lads for an EXCLUSIVE interview and to place a Betway charity bet. And Andy Byrne from West Ham's biggest supporter group Hammers Utd dials in for a chat to discuss many things happening at the club right now including the fan survey undertake by Andy's group. Daily Mirror sports journalist and Tottenham fan Alex Milne features to look ahead to Sunday's massive London derby with Spurs. Ep 123123: Cupsetting scenes at Man Utd
West Ham crashed out of this year's FA Cup in frustrating fashion with a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. The lack of strikers and the club's dereliction of duty by failing to sign one in January came back to bite the Hammers almost straight away as Andriy Yarmolenko failed to cut it in Michail Antonio's absence and youngster Ademipo Odubeko was given a chance off the bench only to be hooked again soon after. An irate Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards straight after the final whistle to wallow in each other's misery and rue the club's lack of ambition in the transfer market. Said Benrahma gets a hammering while the boys take time to praise the positive performances by Fabianski, Craig Dawson and Ben Johnson. The lads also look back to the Mike Dean/ Tomas Soucek farcical situation at the end of the dross 0-0 draw at Fulham. The remarkable win at Aston Villa also comes up as there were three games between podcasts over the last week before focus switches to next Monday's Carlos Tevez derby showdown with Sheffield United at London Stadium. James brings a blast from the past to the table for Name That Game. And he also had a winning Betway charity bet for the Villa game. The lads make their selections for the Blades' visit before the Travelling Blade dials in for the opposition view. The Sun's Sandra Brobbey joins to dissect a grim week for West Ham Women after their thrashing at Chelsea in the League Cup and the underwhelming 1-1 draw at Matt Beard's Bristol City in the WSL. Ep 122122: January transfer win-doh! - ft WHUISA chair Sue Watson
West Ham failed to sign a striker as the January transfer window slammed shut AND lost 3-1 at home to Liverpool in the space of a week. But the Hammers are still fifth in the Premier League – such is the rollercoaster nature of this football season. As James Jones wrote it in his SunSport article on Tuesday: 'Given how West Ham’s season is going so far, it feels weird to be moaning'. But moan the lads certainly do this week as David Moyes’ squad was left threadbare up front with just Michail Antonio and his fragile hamstrings left to score the goals needed to push the Hammers into Europe. Will Pugh is joined by James and Tom Edwards to chat the complete lack of new strikers, the somewhat underwhelming signing of Jesse Lingard on loan from Man Utd and the Liverpool defeat. Chair of the West Ham United Independent Supporters Association Sue Watson joins the lads for an exclusive interview to discuss the group’s role on the newly formed Independent Supporters Committee, her stance on #GSBOut and WHUISA's feud with Karren Brady. Two of the lads’ all time favourite opposition view guests join to look ahead to West Ham's two games before next week’s episode. TV presenter and Aston Villa fan Tim Warwood dials in complete with a voice note from Uncle Ron to chat Wednesday night’s game at Villa Park. And sports journalist, Fulham fan and friend of the show Isabelle Barker speaks to Will about her team’s chances at Craven Cottage on Saturday as well as giving the run down on the West Ham Women. The boys make their Betway charity bet selections. Will is quizmaster for Name That Game as James looks to scrape himself off the bottom of the table. Ep 121121: King Soucek destroys Palace
West Ham are FOURTH in the Premier League. That’s right, if the season finished now, David Moyes’ men would qualify for the Champions League. After going down to Wilfried Zaha’s early goal at Crystal Palace, the Hammers bounced back in emphatic fashion thanks to a brace from Tomas Soucek and a powerful header from Craig Dawson. Michy Batshuayi got a late consolation but the ref blew the whistle to send the boys back to East London with a 3-2 win. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to revel in the Hammers’ fifth win on the bounce including Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup thrashing of Doncaster. A trip to Old Trafford to face Man Utd in the fifth round awaits as the boys muse over the club’s chances of success this season. Football journalist Mark Flanagan joins the lads to look ahead to Liverpool’s visit to London Stadium on Sunday. The boys make their weekly Betway charity bet selections for the Reds game and update listeners on Isla Caton’s progress who started a round of chemotherapy this week. Will chatted to Nikki and Isla on Monday as the brave six-year-old started her latest round of chemotherapy and that interview can be heard at the end of the podcast. Tom is quizmaster for Name That Game. And the guys wrap up the show with a West Ham Women update after the girls reached the Conti Cup semi-final with a 3-0 win over Durham. Ep 120120: The murky world of West Ham's finances - Ft. football finance expert Kieran Maguire
West Ham are massive. Two wins in four days. Six games unbeaten. Four wins in a row in all competitions. Seventh in the league. West Ham are MASSIVE! In what is fast becoming another memorable season in our great club's history, David Moyes has transformed us into a dodgy, weak and unpredictable relegation battling outfit to a strong, resolute, consistent and hard to beat side battling for European qualification. All that in just over a year! Of course, it's still early days and we are playing in unsual circumstances with COVID still very much playing a part in the way football is played both on and off the pitch. But we're beginning to see real progress under Moyes. On this week's bumper show, recording straight after the 2-1 win over West Brom on Tuesday night, James Jones, Will Pugh and Tom Edwards dissect the side's fantastic form, look ahead to this weekend's FA Cup 4th Round clash v. Doncaster and, in a huge and very insightful interview, chat about West Ham's finances with football finance expert Kieran Maguire. Kieran reveals what he thinks are the reasons behind the recent appointment of new directors, gives a pretty heartbreaking view on a potential sale of the club in the near future and discusses the ins and outs of recent transfers, the severe financial impact of COVID on the club and much, much more. Ep 119119: Haller-lujah, he's gone! - ft. The Ribman
West Ham battled through to the FA Cup fourth round by beating Stockport County 1-0 on a boggy Edgeley Park pitch that would have made some Sunday league teams turn their noses up. Craig Dawson leaped like a salmon to nod home the 83rd minute winner after David Moyes’ men had huffed and puffed all night against the deep and well organised National League side. Hammers fans finally said Au Revoir to Sebastien Haller who left for Ajax in a £20-25million deal. There were very few people sad to see the disappointing Frenchman leave but there was barely a dry eye among West Ham fans when the club announced Robert Snodgrass had left for West Brom. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to discuss all of that and more as the Irons approach the midway point of what is undoubtedly a make or break month. The boys are also joined by Mark Gevaux – more commonly known as the Ribman – who pulls no punches as he gives his unfiltered views on the club’s board and their transfer activity. David Sullivan and David Gold appointed new directors at West Ham this week – Sullivan’s son Jack and current partner were two of them. Tom gives the run down on the long list of strikers the Hammers are being linked with and the lads have a general chat about West Ham transfer news. Name That Game is back in dramatic fashion with one of the guys having an absolute mare. West Ham’s women had ANOTHER game postponed because of Covid-19 as their trip to Man City was axed. But the lads discuss other comings and goings before giving details on the New Year shirt giveaway. James reads out some outstanding reviews including a list of belting comparisons between the lads and some current players. Please SUBSCRIBE to the pod and like, rate and share our stuff. Ep 118118: Potato Salad, Old Cliches and New Year optimism
Happy New Year to all of our listeners across the globe - this is our first episode of 2021 as we look to put 2020 well behind us and vow never to speak of it ever again. After ending the previous year with a bit of a whimper, David Moyes' men entered the new year in style by rocking up at Goodison Park and winning 1-0, courtesy of a late Tomas Soucek own goal. And if you didn't love the big man enough by now, he then confessed his love for potato salad during his post-match interview. What a guy. On this week's show, James Jones, Will Pugh and Tom Edwards mull over that Everton win, briefly touch on the draws with Brighton and Southampton, discuss the rumoured return of Marko Arnautovic, thrash out their views on the upcoming FA Cup 3rd Round tie with Stockport County and, of course, compete in the brilliant Name That Game quiz. Can you count how many times James uses old and tired cliches to describe the FA Cup? This week's opposition view is Russ from the Scarf Bergara Wore podcast, who chats with Will ahead of West Ham's FA Cup journey gets underway at Edgeley Park on Monday night. Also this week, WSL expert and sports journalist Isabelle Barker joins the lads to discuss West Ham Women's appointment of Olli Harder as the new manager, as well as their chances of beating giants Man City in the WSL this coming weekend. And finally, the lads chat about their Fantasy Premier League progress as Will bathes in accidental success, James wallows in accidental failure and Tom climbs off the bottom of the table for the first time in weeks. As always, it's a cracker of a show and a superb one to kick 2021 off in style. Ep 117117: A year of progress on and off the pod – 2020 in review
West Ham finished 2020 with somewhat of a whimper but the We Are West Ham boys go out with a bang. In order to have a break over the festive period, Will Pugh was joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards for one last time in 2020 to pre-record a full review of the Hammers’ fortunes on and off the pitch over the last 12 months. The episode was recorded before West Ham’s 3-0 defeat at Chelsea so the boys were still in the dark about the wet fashion 2020 ended on the pitch. However, there is plenty covered from David Moyes’ appointment at the end of December 2019, the thousands strong #GSBOut protest against David Sullivan, David Gold and Karren Brady, coronavirus changing football beyond recognition and the recent surge towards to the European places. Thanks so much to everyone who has listened and contributed to the We Are West ham podcast in 2020. We really appreciate every single listen, download, rating, review and subscription. Ep 116116: Sitting on a Noble shaped fence
In the last proper episode of 2020, the We Are West Ham boys are faced with the reality that maybe, just maybe, it's time to finally call time on Mark Noble's place in the starting XI. Of course, he's been a wonderful servant for the club, making over 520 first-team appearances and becoming a legend in the making, but his inclusion in the team to face Chelsea this week baffled most fans and while he didn't particularly play badly, some believe he didn't exactly benefit David Moyes' side either. Tom Edwards believes Moyes' decision to play Noble was a strange one while Will Pugh is understanding of the reasons behind selecting the skipper over Said Benrahma. James Jones, on the other hand, sees both sides as he desperately tries (and fails) to sit firmly on his Noble shaped fence. Also on this week's show, the lads react to the draw v. Crystal Palace and the defeat at Chelsea, they discuss the Hammers' latest signing, mull over the Brighton game on the 27th and look back on the season so far for the West Ham Women team. There's also an absolute spanking dished out in Name That Game as James takes the quizmaster hot seat this week! As always, it's an action-packed show as the lads bring 2020 to a much needed close with yet another brilliant episode. Oh and we've even included a lovely blooper at the beginning for you, courtesy of Will Pugh! While this is the last proper episode of 2020, keep an eye out next week for our 2020 Review episode, where the lads take a look back at West Ham's calendar year, starting with David Moyes' first game back in charge, and finishing just before the Chelsea defeat. James, Will and Tom are taking a well earned week off from recording, but the 2020 Year Review will still be out next week to ensure you can get your We Are West Ham fix before we finally wave goodbye to a woeful 2020 and welcome in a hopefully much more promising 2021. Merry Christmas to all of our listeners around the world - it's a pleasure to be able to at least try and keep you all entertained on a weekly basis and we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting us and sticking with us this year. Ep 115115: 'Someone's robbing your house' ft. Martin Allen
West Ham United are sixth in the Premier League after 12 games. The Hammers had an extremely tough start to the season but David Moyes' men have come out the other side of it smelling like roses. Tomas Soucek and Angelo Obgonna's headers helped the boys to another fantastic win at Leeds on Friday - West Ham's first comeback win after going a goal down away for two years. Crystal Palace visit London Stadium on Wednesday - a game which will unfortunately be back behind closed doors after Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock decided to put London back into coronavirus tier 3. And Will Pugh, Tom Edwards and James Jones are back to discuss it all as well as look ahead to the Chelsea game on Monday night. West Ham cult hero Martin 'Mad Dog' Allen also dials in to give his view on the Hammers' excellent run of recent form. And the former midfielder does not pull any punches when asked for his thoughts on Sebastien Haller and Tottenham! Palace fan and sports journalist Max Mathews gives the Opposition View. The Betway Charity Bets are back, Will is quiz-master for Name That Game and of course the boys wrap up the show with the West Ham Women segment. Having beaten Bristol City 4-0 and news of a new manager on the horizon, things are looking up for the girls. Please SUBSCRIBE, RATE and REVIEW the podcast if you like what we do. Ep 114114: A VARy embarrassing linesman ft. Matty Taylor
So we all came crashing down to earth on Saturday night when our impressive run of form was ended in quite controversial fashion by Man United and VAR. We didn't help ourselves with all those missed chances, particularly in the first half, but that shambolic VAR decision that led to Paul Pogba's leveler set the tone for the rest of the game. But there are still loads of positives to take from that 3-1 defeat as we head into to a huge Friday night clash with Leeds at Elland Road - a win there takes us back into 5th, a draw would at least keep us firmly in the top 10. And that's the crux of this week's episode as James Jones and Will Pugh go it alone with Tom Edwards, who couldn't get himself out of work in time for the recording. The lads discussed the Man United game in depth - what did they blame for the defeat? Also on this week's episode; James and Will discuss their Betway Charity Bets ahead of the weekend, Will chats to Darren Harper from the LS11 Leeds United podcast, the boys mull over West Ham Women’s narrow defeat to Chelsea and, at the very end, Will catches up with former Hammers winger Matty Taylor, who recalls his memories of playing with the late Papa Bouba Diop at both West Ham and Portsmouth. There’s no Name That Game this week due to Tom’s absence, but that will of course return next week as James looks to extend his points lead at the top. It is of course yet another packed show! Ep 113113: Our guardian Angelo ft. Wally Downes
West Ham fans were saddened to learn about the death of Papa Bouba Diop on Sunday. The Senegalese - or 'The Wardrobe' as he was known - played for the Hammers for just a year in the 2011-12 season but was well liked and immediately gained the respect of his team-mates for his kind nature and outstanding attitude in training. Former Hammers assistant manager Wally Downes was Sam Allardyce's No 2 during Diop's year at the club and Downes dialled in from Jamaica to speak to Will Pugh about his first hand experiences with the gentle giant. Ex-Wimbledon man Downes also told tails of his time at Upton Park under Big Sam and Avram Grant. Chad from Betway joined Will, James Jones and Tom Edwards to celebrate their HUGE charity bet wins after TWO winning selections in Monday's narrow victory against Aston Villa. One of the boys even nailed a 25/1 shot bagging a whopping £1,250 for his charity! The lads dissect the crazy win against Villa that sent the Hammers fifth. The Sun's Manchester United correspondent Neil Custis joined the guys to preview the Red Devils' visit to London Stadium on Saturday night. Name That Game is back and the lads discuss Matt Beard's new social pursuits having left his role as West Ham Women manager last month. Packed show. Ep 112112: John Lyall will sort it ft. Boys of '86 legend Frank McAvennie
West Ham put the Blades to the sword with a thoroughly professional performance on Sunday thanks to a goal from under pressure frontman Sebastien Haller. The Hammers could have had more if it wasn't for Jarrod Bowen's indecision and Tomas Soucek's missed sitter. And Will Pugh, James Jones and Tom Edwards discuss all of that and more as the lads are joined by West Ham's iconic Boys of '86 striker Frank McAvennie to give his views on the Hammers' current situation. Frank was Tony Cottee's famous strike partner in the club's most successful season to date with the pair bagging a staggering 46 league goals between them as West Ham finished third. The Scot gives his views on David Moyes, Haller, Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals as well as his predictions for next Monday's game against Aston Villa. And of course it would be criminal of the lads to let Frank go without asking him about his time at the club and boy did he deliver. Some hilarious and engaging anecdotes about his time in East London including a belter about iconic manager John Lyall. TV presenter and Aston Villa fan Tim Warwood also dialed in to talk Villa's visit to the London Stadium next Monday. The Betway Charity bet section was back as always before a very tough round of Name That Game. And to wrap up, after Matt Beard left as manager of West Ham's Women team last week, the lads were joined by Geoff Longhurst - dad of West Ham Women's midfielder Kate Longurst and lifelong Hammers fan for the inside track on Matt's departure. Ep 111111: Pre-Blades Birthday Blues
West Ham didn't have a game last week as it was the international break but several Hammers stars jetted off across the world to play for their countries. Declan Rice was involved in both Belgium's goals in England's Nations League defeat but he is still the best midfielder in the world. And Andriy Yarmolenko tested positive for coronavirus while away with Ukraine. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to discuss all of those issues and much more ahead of the return of Premier League action this weekend. The Irons travel to 'Tevez-gate' rivals Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon and the lads make their Betway charity bet selections ahead of the fixture. The Sun's northern football correspondent Oscar Paul also dials in for the opposition view ahead of the Blades clash. Before the Daily Mail's Kathryn Batte joins to discuss the West Ham Women and their disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Brighton on Sunday. Name That Game is back as ever and Will spends a lot of the episode sulking with his former mates James and Tom who failed to wish him a happy birthday last Friday. Ep 110110: Is it even possible to be angry after a win? - Featuring Tony Gale
Is anyone still giggling to themselves about Ademola Lookman's hilarious attempt at a Panenka last weekend? Surely it has to be the worst penalty to have been taken in Premier League history, but it means we were able to come away with what some consider to be a very fortunate three points last weekend. The first half wasn't bad but the second half was poor, as we ran out of ideas to break Scott Parker's side down, and it almost cost us. And that's the stance Will Pugh is taking this week. Despite the win, Will is angry with the performance, Said Benrahma's 'unprofessionalism' in giving away the penalty and James Jones' view that you just can't be upset with a win. The latter definitely making Will a lot angrier than he should be. So this episode has a lot of James and Will completely disagreeing with each other, which always makes for fun listening, while Tom Edwards sits back and refuses to get involved. The big interview this week is with West Ham icon Tony Gale, who joined the lads to discuss the Fulham game, the impact Moyes has had on the team, Declan Rice and so much more! Also on the show, the lads discuss their Betway Charity Bets from last weekend, WSL journalist (and upset Fulham fan) Isabelle Barker dials in to chat all things West Ham Women and Tom Edwards takes the quizmaster hotseat for Name That Game. Ep 109109: Is Haller a 'dying giraffe'? - ft. Craig Forrest
West Ham narrowly lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday. Pablo Fornals gave the Hammers an early lead before Mo Salah scored a penalty he won by flinging himself to the floor after a slight touch by HRH King Arthur Masuaku. Diogo Jota got a late winner and after the game Irons fans tripped over themselves to point the finger of blame. Sebastien Haller got some stick, so did Masuaku but the main anger was directed at VAR for awarding the soft pen. And Will Pugh, James Jones and Tom Edwards are joined by West Ham cult hero - former goalkeeper Craig Forrest to decide who was to blame for the defeat. Ex-Canadian international Forrest shares some hilarious and insightful anecdotes about some iconic Hammers of the past including Harry Redknapp, Paolo Di Canio, John Moncur and Neil Ruddock. Joe Sansom from the Fulhamish podcast dials in to look ahead to Saturday's game against the West Londoners at London Stadium. Jonesey takes the hotseat for Name That Game. Ep 108108: New contracts for everyone! - with legend Tony Cottee
Take yourself back to after the Newcastle defeat and remember how you felt before that horrid run of fixtures that followed. Horrible, wasn't it? But what was all the fuss about? We've only lost once in the league since then and have instead played like what we can only describe as a proper looking football team. For once. So it's positivity all around as we take eight points from our opening six fixtures into a tough trip to Anfield, but when you've avoided defeat against top sides like Man City, Wolves and Leicester beforehand, facing the Premier League champions doesn't seem so difficult. James and Will aren't joined by Tom this week, as he's been at a family wedding in Portugal, but they did manage to sub in a late, yet pretty special replacement. None other than West Ham legend and ex-goal machine Tony Cottee! Cottee joined the lads for the bulk of this week's episode, where he gives his views on the season so far, demands new contracts for two people at the club in particular and has a go at raising some money with the Betway Charity bets! Ep 107107: There really 'Ain't nobody like Lanzini'
Manuel Lanzini is already a favourite among West Ham fans but on Sunday night as the clock ticked down to zero at Tottenham's new stadium, he cemented his place in Hammers history with one of the greatest goals you will ever see. 3-0 down with ten minutes remaining at the home of their bitter rivals and with hope seemingly lost, West Ham battled back to draw 3-3 thanks to Fabian Balbuena, an own-goal from Davinson Sanchez and an absolute screamer from La Joya - The Jewel - Lanzini. It was a feeling you want to last forever, and Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to try and drag the ecstasy out a little bit longer on this week's We Are West Ham podcast. West Ham's legendary former academy director Tony Carr joins the lads to discuss the famous performance at Tottenham, Declan Rice's rise to the top and his memories of Dylan Tombides whose foundation James is raising money for this season. One of the lads celebrated a Betway charity bet win in the Spurs game and Tony joined the boys in placing another for this weekend's visit of Manchester City. Ste Tudor from the 93:20 pod dialled in for the opposition view and Will took the quizmaster's mantle this week in nostalgic quiz Name That Game. The boys of course wrapped up the show with the West Ham Women segment and a hilarious middle name game after the Hammers' Premier League squad was announced on Tuesday night. Ep 106106: A transfer strategy to cure insomnia
With the international break behind us, the lads turn their attention this week to arguably our biggest game of the season - Spurs away! But that's not before James Jones, Will Pugh and Tom Edwards address all the big talking points of the last seven days, of which there have been many. Firstly, and most importantly, James addresses a rather hilariously harsh review from one of our dear listeners, which has given him the inspiration to take the government's recent advice and retrain for a completely different career altogether. And then the lads discuss the recent arrival of defensive powerhouse Craig Dawson, the confusing pursuit of Brentford's Said Benrahma, Declan Rice's impressive performance for England V. Belgium and, of course, look ahead to this weekend's big London derby. Plus lots, lots more! Also this week... - Chad from Betway joins the team to talk through the week's Betway Charity Bet Selections, while also making a very kind gesture following James and Tom's Leicester heartbreak. - The Athletic's Tottenham Correspondent, Charlie Eccleshare, discusses the chances of Gareth Bale making his second Spurs debut this weekend (and obligatory goal, no doubt). - The Sun's football reporter and WSL expert, Isabelle Barker, reviews the Hammers' recent defeat to Everton, Matt Beard's future as West Ham Women's boss and looks ahead to the big clash with Man United this Sunday. Ep 105105: Repka and Schemmel's love child
West Ham pulled off one of the most complete performances from a Hammers team in recent memory when they went to Leicester and thrashed the Premier League leaders 3-0 on Sunday. The win came off the back of a defeat at Everton in the League Cup and a fantastic 4-0 league win over Wolves. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to revel in the Irons' newly found excellent league form and the lads swing between the desire to get carried away or heed the urge to let it all go and be depressed about West Ham's totally shambolic transfer window. David Sullivan assured fans the fury inducing sale of Grady Diangana to West Brom would fund investments in other areas of David Moyes' squad. But shock, horror, the only man to arrive is £5million Czech right-back Vladimir Coufal from Slavia Prague. One of the lads won the first Betway charity bet of the season and 'Name that Game' heats up with a ferocious battle between Tom and Will. The Athletic's West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas dials in with acute insight into how hard West Ham really tried in the transfer market. And the boys discuss much more including Felipe Anderson, Jack Wilshere, Harry Redknapp, King Arthur Masuaku and the West Ham Women. Please like, rate and subscribe if you like what we do. Ep 104104: God save the King (Arthur)
We all know supporting West Ham really is exasperating, but even more so when they put in incredible performances against the likes of Wolves at a time when all hope and confidence is at rock bottom. Why can't we do that every week!? That 4-0 victory over a very good Wolves side (albeit very poor on the day) might just kickstart our season, but at the very least it gives us a very good insight into what this David Moyes side is capable of on its day - just imagine how good we could be if Dave is able to convince Sullivan to sign some better players before the transfer deadline. This is an unexpectedly bumper show where the lads discuss all sorts of big (and small) topics surrounding the club. That Wolves win, King Arthur's return to form, the Carabao Cup trip to Everton, transfer rumours, David Sullivan's talkSPORT interview and much more is on the agenda on this episode, as well as the new Name That Game Quiz. There's also the Betway Charity Bets as James Jones, Will Pugh and Tom Edwards discuss a third week of losing selections, although they are getting closer to raising some money for their nominated charities. They're are also joined by Sun journalist and Leicester City fan, Josh Jones, who gives us some insight into a rampant Foxes side ahead of Sunday's clash at the King Power, while they also discuss West Ham Women captain Gilly Flaherty's very open, brave and inspirational admission that she attempted to take her own life 10 years ago. Once again, it's a huge and action-packed show with plenty of talking points covered. As always please REVIEW and SUBSCRIBE if you like what we do. Ep 103103: Positive Tests, Positive Performances
With the team having upped their game against Arsenal last weekend, despite losing late on, West Ham fans have been considerably more positive about the immediate future than they were a couple of weeks ago. And while we've all been feeling positive about potentially not being in a relegation battle after all (what?), David Moyes, Issa Diop and Josh Cullen all tested positive for Covid-19 before our cup thrashing of Hull on Tuesday night, taking our positivity to a whole new level. We wish all three the best - hopefully, they'll be back and raring to go very soon. Also on this week's show, the lads review the Arsenal defeat, discuss the very few transfer rumours doing the rounds, speak to Dan from the Wolves 77 Podcast ahead of this weekend's clash and, as always, go head-to-head in the Name That Game quiz show. James Jones, Will Pugh and Tom Edwards also discuss our Betway Charity Bets for the Wolves game, having all lost out of raising some cash for our chosen charities last weekend! We'll posting our Wolves bets on social media towards the end of the week, just in case you fancy a little flutter as well. Ep 102102: Takeover or fakeover at West Ham?
In perhaps the most predictable turn of events since the dawn of man, West Ham lost the opening game of the Premier League season at home to Newcastle in the limpest fashion imaginable. Callum Wilson scored his 9millionth career goal against the Hammers and even Declan Rice was awful. There was a faint glimmer of light among the darkness as David Moyes' men went on to beat Charlton 3-0 at home on Tuesday night to progress to the third round of the Carabao Cup where they will face Leeds or Hull City. As fan anger towards David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady continues to fester, reports emerged over the last week of takeover bids from an American consortium. A latest bid of £400million was reportedly rejected by Messrs Gold and Sullivan at the end of August. And Will Pugh, James Jones and Tom Edwards return as ever to dissect the legitimacy of the prospective bids, the on field woes, Rice's future and a HUGE announcement for the We Are West Ham podcast as they announce a season-long charity partnership with Hammers' shirt sponsor Betway. Sports news editor at The Sun and big Arsenal fan Daniel Cutts joins the lads to look ahead to West Ham's game at the Emirates on Saturday. 'Name that Game' quiz is back and sports journalist and WSL expert Isabelle Barker also dials in to breakdown West Ham Women's 9-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal on Saturday. Ep 101101: What is Dian-going on?!
Just when you think things can't get any weirder at West Ham United... Gold, Sullivan and Brady: "Hold our beers." The Hammers' board sold talented youth academy star Grady Diangana to fellow relegation candidates West Bromwich Albion for around £18million last week. And the decision triggered fury among fans to a level not seen since the infamous protests at the Burnley game in 2018. Club captain, Mr West Ham, and usually 'social media silent' Mark Noble even tweeted his anger and disappointment at the decision - a move which proves what an utter mess the club is in right now. Will Pugh is joined as ever by James Jones and Tom Edwards to discuss all of this and much more in a bumper length We Are West Ham podcast. The Sun's north east correspondent Oscar Paul joins the lads to provide an opposition view ahead of the Hammers' first Premier League game of the season against Newcastle on Saturday night. Nostalgia quiz 'Name that Game' is back and with the format nailed down, the first battle of the season kicks off between Will and James. And West Ham fan, sports journalist and women's football expert Ella Jerman features to discuss the girls' opening day WSL draw against Tottenham and their hopes for this weekend's clash with Arsenal and the upcoming season. Ep 100100: Illustrious silverware, lack of investment and ACL injuries
Having continued our 100% pre-season record with a 2-1 victory over Brentford last weekend, we now go head-to-head with Bournemouth for a chance to lift the illustrious Betway Cup in our final friendly before the new season gets underway. Whether you see this is a chance to get some silverware on the board early on or just another meaningless friendly, it doesn't get much bigger than this for David Moyes' men. Or does it? On this week's show, the lads discuss pre-season form, our chances in the Premier League this season and, most importantly, the severe lack of investment in the squad while players are being sold cheaply, with a few more being linked with moves away in the last week. Will we ever see a new signing at the club ever again, or are the current owners deliberately seeking to balance the books in preparation for putting the club up for sale? Only time will tell, but it's a risky move in a summer when the squad is in desperate need of strengthening in key areas. Also on this week's show, James, Will and Tom compete in the new Name That Game quiz and have a chat about all the latest news surrounding the women's team, among many more headline news. Ep 9999: Same ol' West Ham, always rubbish at selling players
We're back! After a three week break, which we spent meticulously planning the future of the pod and working on how to make it even better, the boys are back to bring you weekly dose of light-hearted moans and groans about the mighty West Ham. With just a few weeks to go before the new season gets underway, transfer chat is typically high on the agenda, but while there isn't much in the way of concrete news on incomings, James, in particular, has a lot to say about the club's embarrassing inability to sell players at competitive prices. With over a £10m loss made on the sales of Albian Ajetia and Jordan Hugill this month, who can blame him? Also on this week's first show of the new season, Tom Edwards, recording live from a balcony in Ibiza, tells us why he thinks keeping Grady Diangana must be David Moyes' priority and Will Pugh quizmasters the brand new Name That Game quiz! It's an action packed show, which also debuts a brand new segment on the women's team, so make sure you subscribe, review and rate the pod on whichever podcast platform you prefer listening to us moaning on. Ep 9898: West Ham come a kipper - an end of season review
West Ham United finished 16th in the Premier League in a typically rollercoaster campaign. Six places lower than last season. Two managers, narrowly escaped relegation, thousands of fans protesting against the board and ‘Mr West Ham’ himself Mark Noble reaching 500 appearances for the club. And for the last time this season, Will Pugh is joined by James Jones and Tom Edwards to discuss all of that in this season review episode. The lads hand out the We Are West Ham end of season awards – including a hilarious alternative player of the year. And of course, the very last rogue mystery players quiz of the season pits Tom and James against each other in a final race for glory. The Hammers were hoping to build on last season’s tenth place finish, and after an opening day 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Man City, Manuel Pellegrini’s men went six games unbeaten including a win over Man Utd. But then the wheels started to come off. They crashed out the Carabao Cup with a 4-0 thrashing at League One Oxford - and then won just one of their next ten League games. Pellegrini was sacked just before New Year, quickly replaced with David Moyes and unrest among fans continued to grow. After beating Bournemouth 4-0 in his first game, it took Moyes nine more league outings to get another win. And at the end of February thousands of fans marched through the streets protesting against David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady. But lockdown hit at just the right time for the club. And thanks to superstar Declan Rice, red hot Michail Antonio and impressive January signings Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek, they finished the season strongly - securing their Premier League status with a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford before the same repeating that scoreline against Villa at home on the last day of the season. Thanks so much to everyone who has listened to the podcast this season. It’s been a real pleasure doing it each week and the boys are really grateful for everyone who tunes in. The lads will be having three weeks off before they are back ready and raring to go for pre-season. Please do SUBSCRIBE, rate and review if you like what we do and tell your friends. Ep 9797: A Mark Noble love in
West Ham have stayed up. Barring a mathematical miracle and a goal difference swing of about 7,000, the Hammers will be playing Premier League football again next season. The 3-1 win against Watford at London Stadium on Friday all but guaranteed the club’s safety but perhaps more importantly it marked Mark Noble’s 500th West Ham appearance. Noble became just the tenth player in history to reach such an impressive landmark for the club and what a man he is. Will Pugh is joined by Tom Edwards and James Jones for a well deserved Mark Noble love in and they discuss – among other things – whether anyone will ever achieve such a feat again. West Ham’s legendary academy director and friend of the podcast Tony Carr has known Noble since he bought him to the club when ‘Mr West Ham’ was just a kid and he joins the boys to give some insight into the Hammers captain and his journey from academy prospect to cult hero. Carr also issued a plea to Declan Rice and implored him to stay at the club for another season amid interest from Chelsea. Roshane Thomas – West Ham correspondent for the Athletic – also came on to discuss his fantastic feature piece on Noble he wrote in the build up to the Watford game. Roshane spoke to Gianfranco Zola for the tribute and the Italian compared Noble’s intelligence with that of Italy legend Andrea Pirlo. This cracker of an episode still found time to fit in an opposition preview ahead of the Irons’ game at Old Trafford on Wednesday with Man Utd fan and former presenter of the Man Utd fan show on Love Sport Radio Matt Beadle. And of course the rogue mystery players quiz! This is a blinding episode as we approach the end of the season, great guests, great banter and two great things to celebrate. Ep 9696: Four-tunes always hiding in annual relegation battle (kind of)
A West Ham player scored four goals in one game. West Ham scored four goals in one game. We know, it’s still a bit weird to even say those words out loud knowing they are fact and not just our fading and dying dreams. Michail Antonio’s form since football’s return has been outstanding and was capped with his quartet of strikes in our 4-0 win over Norwich last weekend, which had initially left us all but sage. But then Bournemouth and Aston Villa won and we’re pretty much back where we started, with a huge home fixture over Watford this Friday night. Many believe that just a point against the Hornets will be enough thanks to our superior goal difference over the clubs in and around us, but three points will surely ensure we’re a Premier League team next season. And that’s naturally the main topic of conversation on this week’s show, with James, Will and Tom looking back on the Norwich win, ahead to the massive Watford clash and also discussing all the little details in between; Haller’s future, Kouyate’s regret at turning down Spurs, Soucek and Bowen’s impact, fans returning to stadiums and much, much more. The boys were also joined by Andy from the Stairway to 7th Watford Podcast, who was just as nervous as everyone else on the show ahead of Friday, and then the famous Mystery Players Quiz master Reece Bayliss. Reece joined the lads to talk about his new West Ham Legends business and to take part in the quiz from the other side of the ramp for the first-ever time. It’s an action-packed show as always and as always, well worth a listen to get yourself warmed up for the final three fixtures of what has been a woeful season at West Ham. Ep 9595: What the Haller is going on?!
West Ham played two games between podcasts and somehow they didn't lose either of them. A stunning 3-2 win against Chelsea before a frustrating yet acceptable 2-2 draw at Newcastle saw the Hammers grab four points from a possible six and edge away from the relegation zone. Watford beat Norwich during the recording of this episode to go level with the Irons on 31 points but they remain behind them on goal difference. No Tom Edwards this week but Will Pugh and James Jones discuss a decent week for the club and go through the big headlines of the week. Eintracht Frankfurt reported West Ham to Fifa for missing a £5.4million payment due to the Bundesliga side as part of Sebastien Haller's £45m transfer. Since then the Frenchman has not played for the club - with West Ham blaming a hip problem - setting the conspiracy theorists into motion. Six big names are also out of contract next summer and the boys discuss who should be let go. David Moyes spoke ahead of Wednesday's clash with Burnley at London Stadium and Clarets fan Joe from the TurfCast podcast joined the lads to give his view ahead of the game. West Ham then go to Norwich on Saturday where a win would virtually guarantee the Hammers' safety and could officially condemn the Canaries. No mystery players quiz as Tom was AWOL but it's a jam packed show nonetheless. Ep 9494: Here's to another 125 years of mediocrity
125 years ago, Thames Ironworks FC was founded. 125 years later, West Ham United is honouring that great day by embarking on yet another relegation dog fight. We're all used to this, but it just never gets any easier. It's our 125th birthday that kicks this week's episode off, with Will giving us all a fantastic speech at the beginning that will have you crying into your drink of choice while you listen to our podcast. But it doesn't stop there this week, with an action-packed episode that includes guests David Chidgey from Chelsea FanCast and Sean from the London Magpies and, of course, the obligatory Rogue Mystery Players Quiz. The boys also discuss Aaron Cresswell's comments on Declan Rice, David Moyes' apparent blind optimism, the new home kit, which should be sponsored by Marmite, and much, much more. So make yourself comfortable and enjoy what is a relatively positive and upbeat show, ahead of what will no doubt be a depressing 180 minutes against Chelsea and Newcastle this week. Ep 9393: Cannot Barrera losing to Spurs ft. Mirror's Alex Milne
West Ham have lost 2-0 twice in a row since the last podcast. Wolves made light work of the Hammers at the London Stadium before VAR set Spurs on their way to their win thanks to a Tomas Soucek own goal and a Harry Kane strike when West Ham were ‘pushing for the equaliser’. Will Pugh is joined by Tom Edwards and James Jones straight after the Tottenham game to record the podcast and try and see some light among the darkness. Ryan Fredericks seemed to strengthen Jeremy Ngakia’s negotiating position as it looks like the young right-back is on his way out on June 30. The lads argue about which of the pair was least bad in the two games since the Premier League restarted and also question David Moyes’ seemingly unimaginative approach. Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen provided the only real positive talking points in North London but West Ham’s survival prospects are looking slimmer and slimmer as each week goes by. The guys are joined by Tottenham fan and sports journalist from the Mirror Alex Milne to discuss the game and both teams’ chances of achieving their end of season goals. And of course, the Rogue Mystery Players Quiz is back. Please like, rate, subscribe if you like what we do and tell your friends. Ep 9292: Wolves preview & the Irish Abdoulaye Faye - Ft. Irons DJ Russ Budden
It's been a long while since we've been able to actually talk about football being played, but this week we're finally able to preview our Premier League meeting with Wolves this coming weekend. Three months have passed since we could talk about what's going on on the pitch, so James Jones, Will Pugh and Tom Edwards took full advantage by planning an action-packed show to celebrate! This week, the boys were joined by London Stadium DJ and face of the fantastic YouTube channel My Hammers XI, Russ Budden, who discussed his story behind launching one of the most popular pieces of West Ham content on the web right now, and also what he thinks might happen when Wolves visit East London on Saturday. And then the boys were joined by Sam from the Wolves 77 Podcast, who didn't hold back in reminding us that Wolves are very much on a journey that we all wish West Ham was on. And then there's the West Ham Mystery Players quiz, where James and Tom go head-to-head in a friendly competition - this week it's James' turn to embarrass himself! Ep 9191: Is Jeremy staying or Ngoing & the Irish Rufus Brevett
Jeremy Ngakia looks set to leave West Ham after David Moyes expressed disappointment at his decision to walk away from negotiations. The 19-year-old is reportedly after £20k-a-week while the Hammers are only offering £5k plus bonuses and the stalemate means he will depart the London Stadium on June 30. Will Pugh, Tom Edwards and James Jones have different opinions on the matter but are united in their joy at the news Tomas Soucek has extended his deal until the end of the season and seems keen to stay long term if West Ham stay up. The lads worry about what a big IF that really is as the battle against relegation gets going again in less than two weeks. The Rogue Mystery Players quiz is back by popular demand and the boys get into the pros and cons of a Premier League salary cap. Ep 9090: Football's back, an emotional farewell & Jack Wilshere censorship
We're back. Football's back. Normal life is (kind of) back. There's still a long way to go before we can really say normal life is back, but the recent easing of lockdown restrictions gave given us all a bit of hope that there is light at the end of the lockdown tunnel. And after a week's break, we're back to bring you all the latest West Ham talking points. This time as very proud award nominees. Yep, that's right, we've been nominated for Best Podcast at the Football Content Awards and we couldn't be prouder. Thank you to everyone who listens to our ramblings each week and helps support the show - it really does mean a lot. We've left details on how you can vote for us below and on our Twitter page. But amidst the euphoria of an award nomination comes some very sad news. The amazing Charlie Hawkins has decided to move on to pastures new and will no longer be a part of the We Are West Ham movement. Charlie has been an integral part of the success of this podcast up to now and we would like to thank him for all his hard work and dedication. He joined as our presenter and leaves as our friend. Replacing Charlie on a permanent basis is Tom Edwards, who has been involved in the show sporadically over the years but has accepted our offer to join full time. A very worthy addition to the team, indeed. Welcome, Tom! So on this week's show, the lads say farewell to Charlie, welcome (back) Tom and then run the rule on all the big West Ham related headlines. From the return of football to season ticket refunds to imposing a Jack Wilshere censorship on the podcast to the potential of renewed fan protests, the lads touched on everything as we begin to countdown to our match with Wolves in a few weeks' time. As always, thank you to everyone who listens every week and if you haven't already, please make sure you subscribe, rate and review us on whatever podcast platform you're listening on. We really do appreciate the support. Ep 8989: We Are West Ham week off
Will Pugh, James Jones and Charlie Hawkins are having a well earned rest this week. Unfortunately, the full length episode of the Rogue Mystery Players quiz the lads were hoping to put out this week is proving quite the technical challenge so it is going to have to wait a few more weeks unfortunately. However, if you haven't already, this week would be a great time to go back to episodes 66 and 68 which is the two part Nostalgia Series special Will and quizmaster Reece recorded last summer all about the last season at Upton Park. Ep 8888: Sullivan's £50m Covid crisis and the Mystery Players Quiz finale!
It was announced this week that players had been given the green light to return to training, albeit without any contact and social distancing measures still very much in place. However, there are several players who remain unhappy that football is even attempting to restart while the pandemic continues and some have even refused to return to training. With the Bundesliga getting back to business last weekend, can the Premier League follow suit safely and without any major issues within the coming weeks? The lads spoke about all of that and some of the other big talking points coming out of the club this week, including an in-depth chat about some very interesting manager rumours doing the rounds in Italy as David Sullivan is reportedly keeping a close eye on a potential David Moyes replacement. But arguably the most important section of this week's episode is the finale of the Rogue Mystery West Ham Players Quiz, with James and Will both going into the 29th and final round all square. It's all set up to be a tense ending - who will walk away with the prize? Who will be forced to buy the other a load of beers? Who will prove they have a better knowledge of random West Ham players from years gone by? It's all decided in this week's episode! The lads are now going to take a well-earned break but will be back again in just two weeks with a brand new show and hopefully a brand new weekly feature to replace the quiz. As always, thank you to everyone who listens every week and if you haven't already, please make sure you subscribe, rate and review us on whatever podcast platform you're listening on. Boris Johnson gave football the go ahead to resume behind closed doors after June 1 and while some players are still hesitant, it looks like we'll be seeing West Ham back on our screens sooner rather than later. Mark Noble also hinted in the week he would like to take up a director of football role at West Ham after he retires as he doesn't know if he could be manager after seeing what it done to Slaven Bilic. Will Pugh, James Jones and Charlie Hawkins return to discuss all of that, and the success of the We Are West Ham 'Refer-A-Friend' scheme sees Hammers icon Tony Gale join the lads for more than half of the podcast thanks to Tony Cottee's recommendation last week. Gale has a close relationship with Declan Rice so the lads press him on his next steps as well as David Moyes and the current state of the club. Tony fielded questions from listeners before leaving the boys to get on with the PENULTIMATE rogue players quiz of the season. With the scores tied at 14-14 it really is all to play for heading into the final week. Ep 8686: Lost integrity, neutral venues and rubbish Rice rumours
We're still no closer to being reunited with the beautiful game but that hasn't stopped us from having plenty to talk about in its absence. The latest is that West Ham are among six Premier League clubs who are against the Premier League's proposals to play the remainder of the season behind closed doors and at neutral venues, which is quite understandable given what's at stake in the battle to stay in the top-flight. That forms the bulk of the conversation this week, while we also spent much of the episode discussing some of the biggest talking points from our exclusive feature-length interview with club legend Tony Cottee, who very kindly spent almost two hours chatting all things West Ham with James Jones and Will Pugh earlier this week. If you haven't already done so, make sure you go back and listen to that bonus episode where Cottee talks to the boys in-depth about the board, Declan Rice, his Hammers career and, of course, some of his best memories of that 1985/86 season. And finally, as always, we end the show with the West Ham Mystery Players Quiz, where it's getting very tense heading into the final few weeks of the season. Can Will level the scores and put even more pressure on James? You'll have to listen to find out. Ep 8585: TONY COTTEE SPECIAL - bonus full length EXCLUSIVE interview
bonusWith 146 goals for West Ham over two spells at the club, Tony Cottee is undoubtedly one of the Hammers' greatest ever strikers. A club icon who continues to fly the claret and blue flag in his media work as a well known and well liked Sky Sports News pundit. A hero of the Boys of '86 season, who eventually left for Everton in the pursuit of trophies before a return to Upton Park years later where he carried on banging in the goals. Cottee joins Will Pugh and James Jones to chat all things West Ham from his time at the club, the gut wrenching departures, his recent brain hemorrhage, David Moyes, Declan Rice, the board and much more beyond. Tony also answers questions from the We Are West Ham listeners who can get in touch at [email protected]. Ep 8484: Declan Rice, fire sale threats & football's future ft. Soccer Saturday's Bianca Westwood
We all knew the Declan Rice rumours would resurface at some point this summer, but I don't think many fans were expecting them to serve as the backdrop to what increasingly looks like a firesale of the club's best players. The current global crisis has led to many football clubs looking for ways in which they can negate the impending financial implications of months without live games, and when you've got players with market values in excess of £40m+, it's no surprise reports of a firesale are beginning to surface. But if clubs need to sell their best players in order to stay afloat, how many other clubs are going to be in the market to buy them for big money? Very few, and that's why the Rice rumours don't make a lot of sense when you really think about what effects Covid-19 is going to have on football's finances. So that's the main topic of discussion on this week's episode, while we're also delighted to welcome Soccer Saturday reporter and fellow Hammer Bianca Westwood to the show for the first time. The lads also spoke with Neil Langley, who's West Ham fanatic son, Dexter, is currently suffering with a mysterious illness but was given a huge boost when Jarrod Bowen and Mark Noble sent him video messages of support last week! Ep 8383: DEAN ASHTON SPECIAL - bonus full length interview
bonusDean Ashton sent West Ham fans into ecstasy when he put the Hammers 2-0 up against Liverpool just 28 minutes into the 2006 FA Cup final. Steven Gerrard eventually broke the Irons' hearts before the Reds won on penalties but Ashton will forever be remembered for allowing us to dream. His quarter-final goal at Man City, the overhead kick at Old Trafford and the repeat performance during Mark Noble's testimonial, Ashton discusses all of those and more with Will Pugh and James Jomes in this full length bonus episode. The 36-year-old's career was cruelly cut short aged just 24 during a training session with England. Ashton chats that mental impact, working under Alan Pardew, Sebastien Haller, David Moyes and EFL prospects he thinks the Hammers should sign. Ep 8282: In it to twin it ft. the Kmita twins & The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg
It's another week without football and another week without West Ham, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to talk about. And this week's show is an extra special one, with James Jones, Will Pugh and Charlie Hawkins being joined by football reporter for The Guardian Jacob Steinberg and former West Ham Women stars Rosie and Mollie Kmita! In a bumper episode, there was no shortage of things to discuss. Jacob Steinburg gave us his views on the current financial situation at the club during the postponement, the fans' protests against the owners before football stopped and where he sees the club going in the future. And the Kmita twins give us a really interesting view into what it's like rising up the ranks through the professional women's game, how impressive Jack Sullivan has been in the running of the club, their decision to retire early and move into media and many, many more things. And then, of course, we end the show with the Rogue West Ham Players Quiz, with Will desperate to level the scores as we head into the final month of the season! It's fair to say this is one of the best and funniest episodes we've done, with doorbells, rollerblades and suspect fan accounts also making their way into the conversation. And you're going to want to tune in next week as well, as we welcome Sky Sports' Bianca Westwood to the We Are West Ham podcast for the first time. Ep 8181: Ferdinand, deferral, fruit and fitness ft. West Ham legend Tony Carr
West Ham's players agreed to a wage deferral on Friday as the squad - led by captain Mark Noble - try to do their bit to help the club combat the financial impact of coronavirus. David Moyes and Karren Brady agreed to 30 per cent reductions while David Gold and David Sullivan - alongside other minor shareholders - poured £30million cash into the club via a rights issue scheme. From lockdown, Will Pugh and James Jones join Charlie Hawkins to chat through the latest news and transfer rumours and even give kudos to Spurs fans for pressuring Tottenham chiefs into their furlough U-turn. Hammers legend and friend of the show Tony Carr joined the lads from home to give his views on the latest situation, Rio Ferdinand's revelation that he was a heavy drinker during his time at Upton Park and Carr's relationship with former West Ham man Jimmy Greaves who is currently in hospital. The rogue players quiz is tied at 12-12 and with just weeks of the season remaining things are getting tense. Ep 8080: Disgraceful Tottenham and Best Away Days - Ft. Football.London's Sam Inkersole
With Covid-19 continuing to bring a halt to everyday life, a lot of pressure has come on football clubs, players and owners to do the right thing financially in these difficult times. A lot of West Ham fans will be surprised the club hasn't already decided to furlough non-playing staff during this period, and instead have decided to find alternative ways to raise money and continue to operate with vastly reduced revenue streams. Meanwhile, Spurs have done the disgraceful thing and asked the taxpayer to help them pay the wages of non-playing staff while their millionaire players continue picking up full whack. They've not even reversed that decision as Liverpool did. Awful club. This week, James Jones, Will Pugh and Charlie Hawkins are joined by Football.London's Sam Inkersole to discuss the financial implications on the club during this time and a more detailed look at what they're going about minimising the long term risk. Also on the show, the boys discuss the very bizarre Alexis Sanchez rumours and reveal their best away day memories on the 13th anniversary of the famous 1-0 win at The Emirates. And of course, the boys take part in the rogue players quiz, where James is looking to go level on game weeks once again, while quizmaster Reece Bayliss joins the boys for the first time! It's another episode where we've had to improvise during lockdown and we hope you're still enjoying what we do each week. Ep 7979: Ghosted by Julien Faubert ft The Athletic's Roshane Thomas
Coronavirus lockdown continues but so does the We are West Ham podcast! The Hammers emphatically confirmed this week the club has precedent over baseball and athletics if the Premier League season spills over into the summer and no running track will be visible if football games are played. James Jones and Will Pugh accompany Charlie Hawkins for another remote installment and -speaking of athletics - the lads are joined by Roshane Thomas, West Ham correspondent for THE Athletic. Roshane talks all things on and off the pitch, #GSBOut and shines a light on time he was ghosted by Irons' cult heroes Julien Faubert and Samassi Abou. The rogue players quiz sits at 12-10 to Will going into this episode so tune in for some more blasts from the past as the competition heats up.
