226. "Airport that way, Prague this way!" WEST HAM ARE EUROPEAN FINALISTS!
West Ham United are in a European final for the first time in almost 50 years and it's a real struggle to come to terms with it. Little ol' West Ham are just 90 minutes away from not just winning a first major trophy since 1980, but a European trophy that will guarantee Europa League football again next season. How on earth did we end up here!? It's mind-boggling, especially when you consider the terrible Premier League campaign we've had to endure. Last Thursday's victory against AZ Alkmaar, secured by Pablo Fornal's stoppage-time winner, has ensured this squad of players will go down in West Ham history as heroes, regardless if they win it or not. If they win it, they'll be Gods. And then, to top off a wonderful week, we go and beat Sam Allardyce's Leeds United at home to all but send them and him down to the Championship. If Carlsberg did weeks, eh!? However, in a week of happiness, euphoria and sheer joy, there is a hint of sadness as we may have seen both Declan Rice and Manuel Lanzini play their final games at London Stadium - how fitting that they both found the scoresheet against Leeds last weekend. On this week's show, James and Will try to make sense of all this madness, discuss their plans for Prague, look back at the wins over AZ Alkmaar and Leeds and daydream of Rice lifting the Europa Conference League trophy before swanning off to start the next stage of his incredible career. What a way to bow out, eh? Also this week, talkSPORT's Jake Watson returns to the show to chat about his beloved Leicester's relegation worries ahead of next week's final clash of the season at the King Power. It's another brilliant pod, so get your ears around it and get behind the lads for the last few weeks of the season! 🍻 Buy us a pint: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Wearewestham 🎧 Subscribe: https://podfollow.com/we-are-west-ham-podcast 📱 Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WeAre_WestHam 👍🏻 Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wearewesthampod 📸 Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wearewesthapod 🗣️ Something to say? 225. One foot in Prague
We are 90 minutes away from a European final. Let that sink in. After last Thursday's 2-1 first-leg semi-final victory over AZ Alkmaar, West Ham only have to avoid defeat this week to book their place in the Europa Conference League final in Prague. It will be our first major final since 2006 and a chance to end 43 years of hurt since lifting the FA Cup in 1980. As a result of all of that, the Premier League has become somewhat irrelevant, evident in David Moyes' team selection in the 2-0 defeat at Brentford on Sunday. We're all but safe from relegation, so full focus simply must go on ensuring we make the Conference League final now. If we do it, it'll be party time on the streets of East London. West Ham. A European Final. In Prague. What a cocktail of events that would be! Joining us this week to preview Thursday and Sunday's visit of Leeds is Mike Statham, who returns to give us his thoughts on AZ Alkmaar, before Darren from the LS11 Leeds United podcast dials in to preview our Premier League clash in Stratford. It’s an absolute belter of a pod, so get your ears around it and get behind the lads for the rest of the season! 224. TONY COTTEE SPECIAL: Concentrate on the Conference now we're safe in the Prem
West Ham United are safe… well pretty much. A fantastic 1-0 win over Manchester United at London Stadium on Sunday put the Hammers seven points clear of the drop zone and only a miracle from the sides below would see the Irons drop into the Championship. And that means all our focus can now switch to winning the Europa Conference League, starting with this Thursday’s semi-final first-leg at London Stadium against AZ Alkmaar. James Jones has jetted off to Montreal AGAIN for work so Will Pugh holds the fort but the listeners are likely to be pretty impressed with James’ replacement for the week. It is none other than Hammers legend Tony Cottee! Tony lifts the lid on all things PAI Capital, David Moyes, Declan Rice and much more as well as looking back and forward to some huge games for West Ham United. TalkSport’s Natalie Sawyer also dials in to look ahead to Sunday’s Premier League clash at Brentford. And Eredivisie expert Mike Statham joins to give the low-down on Thursday’s opponents AZ Alkmaar. It’s an absolute belter of a pod, so get your ears around it and get behind the lads for the rest of the season! 223. Survival on hold as VARcical decisions give LiVARpool and Palace a helping hand
April saw us a welcome revival in form for West Ham but it ended in bitter disappointment thanks to two outrageously bad VAR decisions cost us at least two points from our games against Liverpool and Crystal Palace. Thiago's double handball in the area at London Stadium wasn't even checked by VAR, while Eberechi Eze's dive in the box at Selhurst Park WAS checked, only for the officials on the day to STILL award a penalty, despite there clearly being no contact. Both decisions were bad in their own right but when you're up against incompetence of the highest order, there's not a great deal you can do. VAR was introduced to remove all human error from the game, yet all it seems to have done is install a level of incompetence and inconsistency no one really thought was possible. So we go into this week's fixtures against Man City and Man United knowing we'll likely go into the final three games of the season needing at least one win to absolutely make sure of survival. Those fixtures are against Brentford, Leeds and Leicester, so we should still be ok, although it's far from ideal. Joining us this week is Ste Tudor from the 93:20 Podcast to help us preview Wednesday's trip to the Etihad, and then Sun Sport Journalist, Phil Cadden, joins us to preview Sunday's visit of Man United. As always, it's a brilliantly packed show but this week it's far more positive! 222. "Here come the Hammers" as West Ham's Brazilian Magnifico finally arrives
Only a few weeks ago we were fearing relegation and calling for David Moyes to be sacked. Now, we're looking forward to another European semi-final and are edging closer to Premier League safety, following a run of one defeat in 10 games. The last seven days have been the best of the season so far - thrashing Gent 4-1 on Thursday night to set up a Europa Conference League semi-final against AZ Alkmaar kicked things off, before we travelled down to Bournemouth to give them a good hiding, too. Now things a lot more positive and we're beginning to see signs of the old West Ham again, is Moyes' position safe once again? Or should he still be let go at the end of the season regardless? James and Will mull over Moyes' future this week, as well as look back at those two rampant victories that have set us up nicely for a strong end to a difficult campaign. Also this week, Henry Jackson from This Is Anfield joins us to preview Wednesday's visit of Liverpool before friend of the show and huge Crystal Palace fan, Max Matthews, returns to give his thoughts ahead of Saturday afternoon's trip to Selhurst Park. As always, it's a brilliantly packed show but this week it's far more positive! 221. The season of juxtaposition
The week started with a drab, underwhelming 1-1 draw in Belgium against Gent and ended with a wonderful, unexpected 2-2 home draw with Premier League leaders Arsenal in Stratford. The debate for some time now has been, would you take relegation if it meant us winning the Conference League, or would you prefer us to stay in the Premier League over winning silverware? It's a rather odd juxtaposition that we find ourselves as we head into a huge week in the club's history. We're 90 minutes away from yet another European semi-final but on Sunday we face Bournemouth in a huge game that will go along way in deciding our Premier League status. This week we discuss all of that and, of course, review the superb performance against Arsenal on Sunday, where we all rocked up to Stratford expecting to be thrashed, only to see us leave with a hard-earned point having gone 2-0 down inside the opening 10 minutes. We're then joined by Scott Coyne from the Belgian Football Podcast to preview Thursday night's Conference League quarter-final second-leg, before Bournemouth football correspondent Graham Nickless returns to give us the full lowdown on a very impressive and in-form Cherries side. 220. A dull sandwich with a shambolic filling as West Ham's appetite for silverware grows
Six points from our last three games aren't to be sniffed at, especially as they included two fortunate 1-0 victories and a 5-1 thrashing at home to Newcastle. That run of results leaves us three points above the relegation zone with nine games to play as we now switch our focus to Thursday's Europa Conference League quarter-final first-leg trip to Gent. Then we welcome league leaders and title hopefuls Arsenal to London Stadium on Sunday, which is gearing up to be one of the most predictable results of the season so far. Joining us this week is Stefan Smet, a Belgian sports journalist, who gives us the full lowdown on Gent ahead of Thursday, before friend of the show, massive Gooner and Sports Editor at The Sun, Dan Cutts, returns to let us know how nervous he's getting as Arsenal edge ever closer to a first Premier League title in 20 years. 219. More mind-numbing than mind-blowing as West Ham send Saints marching home
When you're in a relegation battle, you have to win at all costs. In West Ham's case, the cost of Sunday's victory over Southampton was the sheer lack of optimism the performance gave the fanbase that it will be the game to spark a recovery. We simply had to beat Southampton to avoid slipping to the bottom of the table, instead climbing as high as 14th and a point above the bottom three. But the performance wasn't exactly mind-blowing. If anything, it was mind-numbing. But the three points are all that matter as we attempt to avoid the drop. Now we face two very difficult Premier League games in the space of a few days; first up is the visit of Newcastle in Stratford on Wednesday night before we travel to west London to take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon. Joining us this week to preview both games is The Sun's Head of Sport and huge Newcastle fan, Shaun Custis, and Dom Betts from the Fulhamish Podcast. Also this week, James and Will give their thoughts on the win over Southampton and also spend time debating the hot topic of the infamous 3pm blackout rule. 218. No room for April Fools as the Saints come marching in
We're approaching April hoping that David Moyes has found the magic formula over the international break. West Ham have a run of incredibly important fixtures in both the Premier League and Europe, in a month that will no doubt dictate what the immediate future holds for the football club. It'll either be Premier League football or the Championship for us next season, while there's also a chance of competing in the Europa League if we can find a way of lifting the Conference League in Prague, which is something that has become a real possibility with the way the quarter-final and semi-final draw panned out for us. Meanwhile, we're all bracing ourselves for Declan Rice's summer transfer window departure - but how much will the club sell him for?! This crucial period in the season, even the club's history, begins with a MASSIVE home fixture against rock-bottom Southampton on Sunday. Win that and we set the tone for the rest of the month and put more pressure on the teams around us but lose, and we'll likely end the season bottom of the Premier League with Newcastle, Man City and Arsenal still to play in May. Joining us this week to preview the game is friend of the show, massive Saints fan and The Sun's South Coast correspondent, Jack Rosser, who gave us his view on all things Southampton before Sunday. 217. Do West Ham even know they're in a relegation battle?
The 1-1 home draw with Aston Villa didn't give us much hope that the players or the manager are up for the battle to stay in the Premier League. Towards the end, when it was clear Villa weren't too fussed about the result, you wanted to see some fight and effort to find a winner. Instead, Moyes brings Cornet up front instead of Scamacca and we play the final 10 minutes out without barely having a shot on goal. It was like they didn't realise we're in a relegation battle! But at least we have one foot in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals after the comfortable 2-0 victory over AEK Larnaca in Cyprus last week. Stel from the This Is Mappa podcast joins us again this week to give us his view on the first-leg before previewing this Thursday's return leg in Stratford. 216. Battered by Brighton as West Ham get served at the seaside
It's fair to say we didn't really expect to take anything away from the AMEX on Saturday, but no one saw a 4-0 thrashing, did they? The performance was unacceptable, the result even more so, and now we're back to square one after some positive signs in the win over Forest a week earlier and the FA Cup defeat to Man United at Old Trafford. The performance on Wednesday night had much of the fanbase believing we'd turned a corner. West Ham outplayed United for 70 minutes before a late defensive capitulation resulted in a 3-1 defeat. But we saw effort, heart and desire. We didn't get that a few days later, though, as we rocked up on the south coast and got absolutely battered by a very impressive Brighton side. This week, the lads are joined by West Ham Network's Russ Budden to try and make sense of it all, while James and Will also look back on the Man United game. Also this week, Stel from Cypriot football podcast, This Is Mappa, joins us to give us the lowdown on AEK Larnaca ahead of our Conference League last-16 clash on Thursday, before legend of the show Tim Warwood dials in with his seven-year-old daughter to help us preview the weekend's visit of Aston Villa in the Premier League. 215. Th-INGS can only get better
It's been a while since we won a football match, let alone one so comfortably. David Moyes returned to a back four against Nottingham Forest, citing the need for more midfielders post-match, and also gifted Danny Ings his first start since signing for the club. The result? A 4-0 thrashing, Ings scoring twice and West Ham looking utterly devastating in the final third. Arguably for the first time this season. It was a must-win game and that's exactly what we got. But is it a sign of what we should expect for the remainder of the season? Also this week, we look ahead to Wednesday's FA Cup 5th Round clash against Man United at Old Trafford, with talkSPORT's Toni Afoke joining us to preview that one. Then we travel to bogey team Brighton, and Richie Mills from Sussex Live joins us to give us the lowdown on the Seagulls' season so far. It's a busy show as always! 214. It's not the system, it's the execution
There have been intense calls for David Moyes to be sacked after Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Spurs, despite going into it unbeaten in four matches. Many are unhappy with the system Moyes is sticking with, his approach against the so-called 'big six' and the poor results that have inevitably followed. But is all of that the real problem? Defensively we're no worse off in terms of stats, but up front we're really struggling to make a real impact. That's where it appears to be all going wrong. This week, James and Will debate the facts behind why we're struggling so much this season, whether Moyes can truly be blamed for the loss in north London and whether the fear of relegation is still very premature. Also this week, we're joined by Anton from our partners, West Ham Network, who gave his views on the current situation at the club, while Adam from the Red Side of the Trent Podcast joins us to preview Saturday's visit of Nottingham Forest. 213. The Return of the Moyes (and Soucek, Coufal, Antonio, Bowen, etc)
NOTE: Sorry it's a bit late this week, life (and gout) got in the way a bit! Back to normal next week, we promise! Things are looking and feeling a little more enjoyable at the moment, aren't they? We're unbeaten in four, have just one defeat in our last seven in all competitions and have conceded just three goals in our last five. Moyes' semi-permanent switch to a back five appears to have worked a treat as the likes of Tomas Soucek, Vladimir Coufal, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio all show glimpses of their former selves. Meanwhile, new signing Emerson is fast becoming an important fixture at right wing-back, but injury woes for mega-money signings Nayef Aguerd, Gianluca Scamacca and Lucas Paqueta somewhat dampen the optimism slightly. Regardless, West Ham's form is almost unrecognisable from the one that had us calling for Moyes to be sacked on the podcast just last month. On this week's show, James and Will hail the improvement in form, performances and results, praise the recent performances of some of the season's under-performers and then look ahead to Sunday's trip to Spurs. On top of that, friend of the show and talkSPORT presenter, Paul Coyte, joins us to give us the lowdown on his beloved Tottenham. 212. Signs of recovery at St. James' Park after mini-meltdown
The 1-1 draw at Newcastle last weekend gave us plenty of hope that West Ham are beginning to turn a corner. Despite the mini-meltdown at the beginning, conceding twice in the opening three minutes (thankfully only one counted!), Moyes' men recovered well and put in a solid display at one of the hardest places to visit this season. The performance suggested things are beginning to return to something like normal after a woeful first-half of the campaign, but can they keep it up and push on? This week, James and Will look back on the Newcastle performance before looking ahead to Saturday afternoon's home London derby against Chelsea. Also this week, friend of the show Stamford Chidge from the Chelsea FanCast joins us to discuss his beloved Blues, before the lads wrap up for another week. 211. Faux positivity, annual FA Cup trips to Old Trafford and Deadline Day dullness
It was a relatively quiet transfer window for West Ham, with just two players through the door and a handful of exits, but there does seem to be a more positive at the club at the moment. The 2-0 FA Cup victory over Derby County on Monday night made it three wins and as many clean sheets from our last four games - which is the kind of form we just couldn't see coming only a few weeks a go. But, we've drawn Man United away in the FA Cup 5th Round - the fifth time in the last seven seasons we'll make the trip to Old Trafford in domestic cup competition - and no one is even a bit surprised about it. At what point do we start asking questions about the validity of these draws? On this week's show, James and Will discuss the win at Derby, the January transfer window, the FA Cup draw and then look ahead to Saturday's trip to Newcastle. Also this week, Russ Budden from our new partners, West Ham Network, pops in to give his views on the club's business in January, before we're joined by The Sun's Head of Sport and Newcastle fan, Shaun Custis, to preview our game at St. James' Park on Saturday evening. 210. Farewell Ballon D'Awson (and Frank Lampard!), thanks for the "phenomenal" memories
West Ham won a Premier League football match, but all is not what it seems. While the three points were desperately needed, it doesn't change much where David Moyes' future is concerned. A run of fixtures that include Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham in February means we're not entirely out of the woods just yet and it's likely we'll be back in the thick of before too long. Meanwhile, Craig Dawson - the wonderful, beautiful, amazing Craig Dawson - has left the club and everyone's really upset about it. What he gave us during his spell since arriving on loan from Watford will be fondly remembered by Hammers fans for a lifetime, not least his role in our epic journey to the Europa League semi-finals last term. So Ballon D'Awson has left for Wolves, but he'll forever be in our hearts. This week, Will and James discuss all of the above before previewing our FA Cup 4th Round clash with Derby County at Pride Park. Also dropping in is Corey Hancock from the Rams Review Podcast, who sent us his thoughts ahead of the game. 209. From massive to miserable as Moyes mopes on
We agreed last week that David Moyes simply had to get at least four points from West Ham's next two games in order to keep his job. But after losing 1-0 at Wolves, that's now mathematically impossible and leaves us in the bottom three of the Premier League and facing a monumental relegation clash against Everton at home on Saturday. There has been lots of talk since the Wolves defeat that Moyes is on his way out, but the shortlist of potential replacements is worryingly underwhelming. Why wasn't the club prepared for this situation? They had six weeks to do their research on potential replacements, but somehow they've arrived at a shortlist of Sean Dyche, Rafa Benitez, Marcelo Bielsa and Nuno Espirito Santo! On this week's show, James and Will discuss the mess we've found ourselves in and both agree that while Moyes has given us some unforgettable memories over the last two years, now is the time for him to go. Now is the time for change. We're also joined by massive Everton fan Ethan Maddison, from GiveMeSport, who sent us a quick voice note on his thoughts on the Toffees this season. 208. RIP David Gold, ambivalent about Benrahma and Moyes buys more time
Last week West Ham announced the sad passing of co-owner and co-chairman David Gold. Regardless of fans' feelings towards Gold and other members of the board over the years, we must always remember that Gold is a human being who has lost his life. A father. A grandfather. A brother. He was also one of us. A West Ham fan. He famously grew up opposite the Boleyn Ground and played for the club at schoolboy level. So regardless of his role to play in all the issues at the club over the years, you simply cannot deny his love for our football club. But what legacy does he leave as co-owner of West Ham United? Also on this week's show, James and Will mull over the point at Leeds, the surprising FA Cup third round victory at Brentford, David Moyes' future and the ambivalence towards Said Benrahma amongst the fanbase. And finally, we're joined by friend of the show, Dan Bayliss, from the Wolves 77 Club Podcast to preview this weekend's trip to Molineux. 207. Moyes out? Same ol' West Ham as all good things come to an end
All good things come to an end, don't they? After two wonderful years under David Moyes, we do appear to be nearing the end of his second spell following two poor performances and defeats directly after the World Cup break. The loss at Arsenal probably wasn't a surprise but the performance at home to Brentford simply wasn't good enough, despite Moyes finally deciding to drop Tomas Soucek and to play Lucas Paqueta in his favoured No.8 position. Now we face Leeds, Wolves and Everton in a trio of league games that might not decide Moyes' fate in east London, but also define West Ham's Premier League status. Just how has it come to this, just months after a Europa League semi-final? James and Will return this week to discuss all of that, as well Moyes' future, on this week's show, while they're also joined by Darren from LS11, who previews our trip to Elland Road, and Sun Sports reporter Giacomo Pisa, who previews our FA Cup 3rd Round trip to Brentford. 206. The GOAT debate is over while West Ham are back to ruin everyone's Christmas
The World Cup came to a dramatic climax last week as Lionel Messi shut the door on the GOAT debate by finally getting his hands on football's biggest prize, although Will is still adamant he's not the greatest player to have walked the land. But now the World Cup is over, it means we're closer to welcoming West Ham back into our lives. We're all excited about that, of course, but that'll rub off pretty quickly by Boxing Day evening. Stock up on plenty of wine, mince pies and bubble & squeak, as it's going to be a long night! When you're in a relegation battle, the last fixture you want after six week international break is a trip to the league leaders, but here we are. That's what we've got to do and David Moyes' woeful record at top-six grounds is likely going to continue. But we do try to remain positive on the show, despite spending much of it debating the merits of having a World Cup in Qatar, before The Sun's sports editor a huge Arsenal fan, Dan Cutts, joins us to discuss his beloved Gunners ahead of the Premier League's return. Enjoy the show and, from James and Will, we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thanks so much for listening - your support means the world to us! 205. Untimely answers to timely questions as proud England fall short
It's been nice having a break from the stresses of West Ham these past few weeks but the reality is where edging closer to welcoming the boys back to action - it's just a shame it's going to start the way it ended as we prepare to visit league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates on Boxing Day. But before that inevitable disappointment, James and Will get together for a quick catch-up and discuss their thoughts on the World Cup so far. Nayef Aguerd's Morocco have already made history and are now just 90 minutes away from a World Cup final, while the likes of Declan Rice and Lucas Paqueta have impressed for England and Brazil respectively. But while his performance for the Three Lions have been top class this winter, the way in which he addressed his future when asked by the media had sections of the West Ham fanbase frustrated with his honesty. Of course, we all know he's good enough to play Champions League football, but should he have been so honest while West Ham struggle near the foot of the table? The lads discuss all of that and more this week, before returning properly next week ahead of the trip to North London. Note: Apologies of the sound quality this week, both of our microphones didn't seem to be working! A few weeks off and we've gone all amateur on you. Back to top-quality production next week. 204. Impotent West Ham diving the wrong way into the World Cup break
Who knew we'd all be so pleased to be getting a six-week break from West Ham after the last two years. Defeats to Blackburn and Leicester over the last week have ensured we head into the World Cup break in terrible form and in serious danger of being sucked into to a relegation battle when we return to face Arsenal away on Boxing Day. The performance against Leicester wasn't atrocious by any means but we still failed to score any goals, which is the whole point of football isn't it? It's been our problem all season - not being able to convert chances - and it's beginning to cost us heavily. This week, James and Will discuss those two defeats as well as look ahead to the World Cup before taking a mini-break of their own. The next episode is likely going to be in a few weeks but we'll back up and running properly in time for Boxing Day! 203. From Lyon to Losers
NOTE: Apologies for the sound quality on this week's episode. Will had serious Monday morning tech issues! The defeat to Crystal Palace had the David Moyes boo-boys out in force on Sunday and it's easy to see why. Looking back, West Ham under his stewardship seemed to have peaked in Lyon back in April. Since then it's been all downhill and now we risk going into the World Cup break in the bottom three of the Premier League. We can avoid that by beating Leicester City this coming weekend, of course, but it's difficult to really see where our next win is coming from based on our current form. Before then, though, we host Blackburn in the Carabao Cup, which either gives Moyes the chance to kick-start another cup run or the opportunity to rest his key players (again!) and the hope they'll be fresh for the visit of the Foxes. Either way, it's a hugely important week for both West Ham and Moyes' future as the club's manager. 202. All tricks and no treats as West Ham fail to score again (shock horror)
Another Premier League away game, another failure to put the ball in the onion bag. After having plenty of chances but failing to score at Anfield, the Hammers offered a repeat showing at Old Trafford on Sunday and failed to make Man United pay for their sub-standard showing. We huffed and we puffed in the final 20 minutes but just couldn't find the back of the net as David De Gea planned to dominate our nightmares over Halloween. In another repeat showing, Will continues to insist that if you don't win you can't be impressed with the performance, while James persists with his positive view that by creating the chances we did, it shows we're playing well enough to eventually start converting them. Also this week, we discuss the victory over Silkeborg that secured our place in the Europa Conference League last 16, look ahead to Thursday's dead-rubber against FCSB before being joined by the Daily Mail's Max Matthews to preview Sunday's visit of Crystal Palace. 201. A very (very) good performance as West Ham successfully put the rubbish out
West Ham's performance in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield was encouraging, or at least that's what James thinks. Will, on the other hand, disagrees and was "angry" with the fact we didn't capitalise on Liverpool's poor form by converting at least one of the eight shots on goal we had. And then there's the win over Bournemouth, which ended up being more straight forward than we were expecting, albeit via a very dubious VAR decision going our way (for once!). Will thought Said Benrahma was once again frustrating in that victory, while James believes it was one of his better performances in claret and blue! What do you think? It's an episode that sees James and Will disagree on most things, which is reminiscent of the old Love Sport Radio days! Also this week, Will catches up with talkSPORT's Toni Afoke to discuss all things Manchester United ahead of our trip to Old Trafford on Sunday. 200. VARy good defending from Southampton's Peter Bankes
Another game and another farcical VAR decision that has cost West Ham points. It wasn't the alleged foul throw that caused anger after the 1-1 draw against Southampton over the weekend, it was referee Peter Bankes clearly obstructing Jarrod Bowen's attempts to defend in the build-up to Southampton's first-half opener. It was clear obstruction, yet the goal stood. That said, should we be looking at the draw as a good point or two points dropped after having 25 attempts at goal, 14 corners and over 60% possession? James and Will discuss all of that and more on this week's show, as well as look back at the win over Anderlecht, before looking ahead to the trip to Liverpool on Wednesday night and Monday night's visit of Bournemouth. Joining us this week on the Opposition View is Liverpool fan Henry Jackson from This Is Anfield and sports journalist Graham Nickless, who covers Bournemouth. 199. The Good Karma Gods are back in Claret & Blue
Finally, the good karma gods were shining down on us as VAR ruled in our favour in the 3-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday. Gianluca Scamacca may or may not have handled the ball before deftly looping the ball over Bernd Leno to put us 2-1 ahead in the second-half, but VAR arguably made the right call by awarding the goal due to it not being a clear and obvious error. Finally, that rule has been used properly! The victory makes it three in three in all competitions and provided further evidence that we're back on the right track, with Scamacca and Lucas Paqueta developing a wonderful relationship that will hopefully help us get back into contention for a top-seven finish. This week, James and Will discuss the win, the performance and all the controversy, including Michail Antonio's handball in the build-up to his goal. And Will is also joined by friend of the show, sports journalist for The Sun and big Southampton fan, Jack Rosser to chat all things Saints ahead of our trip to St. Mary's. 198. Losing to West Ham is too embarrassing for Wolves
It turns out losing to West Ham was just too embarrassing for the Wolves that they decided to sack Bruno Lage just 24 hours later. It was a big, confidence-boosting win on Saturday. Not just for the entire squad but for Guianluca Scamacca and Jarrod Bowen in particular as they both opened their Premier League accounts for the season. Now we embark on a busy October, starting with Anderlecht away in the Europa Conference League this Thursday before welcoming Fulham to London Stadium on Sunday. This week, James and Will give their views on the win at the weekend before looking ahead to our next couple of fixtures. Will chats to Scott Coyne from the Belgian Football Podcast ahead of Thursday night before he's then joined by talkSPORT's Harry Durham to chat all things Fulham. 197. Hopeless England [West Ham] relegated by Italy [Wigan]
International breaks rarely fill fans with excitement and joy and this one was true to form as England were RELEGATED from their Nations League group after a 1-0 defeat in Italy. Flashbacks of relegations at the hands of Birmingham and Wigan were rife amongst the Hammers fanbase as the painful experience of relegation returned for many of us. But all is not lost. Mark Noble has returned to the club as Sporting Director, presumably to save the day. His first job will be to get back in that dressing room and remind everyone what playing for West Ham means because it appears many have forgotten since Mr. West Ham's retirement. The lads also look ahead to this Saturday's visit of Wolves and James catches up with sports broadcaster and big Wolves fan, Will Lewis, who gives his thoughts on their season so far. Spoiler alert: it's pretty much identical to ours! It's a bit of a shorter episode this week due to not having any games to look back on and with just one to look ahead to, but at least you do get to hear about Will's recent grocery shopping experience. 196. Are two seasons of fun all we're gonna get at West Ham?
Is this the beginning of the end for David Moyes at West Ham? We certainly hope not, but after two incredibly fun seasons since his return, we started this season with just one win from seven Premier League games and have only scored three goals. Yes, we're unbeaten in the Europa Conference League but that's not really the issue here. Moyes' stubborn team selections, strange substitutions and reluctance to give most of the summer signings more than 30 minutes a game in the league is beginning to frustrate the fanbase; not least James Jones, who appears to have been broken by this latest defeat. This week, Will is far more positive than James as the conversation covers Tomas Soucek's role in this current team, reasons for dropping Jarrod Bowen, worries about the Gianluca Scamacca signing, questions over the level of summer spending if the new players aren't going to be used and so much more! The lads also discuss the win against Silkeborg in the Europa Conference League and ponder Moyes' future in east London. As always it's a brilliant show, if not a little bit heated this week after what's happened over the last few days! 195. A touching tribute to Queen Elizabeth II
It has been a terribly sad and emotional past few days, not just in the United Kingdom but across the world. The passing of Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday was tough to take for so many. To those who adored her the most, she was an incredible woman who represented a beacon of hope and happiness throughout her 70 years on the throne. Her passing was confirmed just a couple of hours before West Ham were due to host FCSB in the Europa Conference League, but it was decided the game would still be played. What followed was a moment that will be remembered by all who were in attendance; in what had initially been planned as a minute's silence to remember the Queen before kick-off, fans in attendance instead decided to honour her memory by belting out the national anthem. It was a hair-tingling moment of emotion and respect, which earned West Ham fans the respect and plaudits of neutrals from all over the world as a result. A touching tribute to Her Majesty. On this week's show, James and Will spend much of it reflecting on the events of the last few days as they try to process the magnitude of what's happened, while also looking back on the 3-1 victory over FCSB. Will then has a chat with Football In Denmark's Henry Nicholls for the third time this season as they preview Thursday's trip to Silkeborg, while James previews the visit to Everton with GiveMeSport's Ethan Maddison. 194. Absolutely VARcicle
We've all seen it. We all know it was a complete and utter disgrace. But where do we go from here? VAR's existence in the Premier League is becoming more and more laughable with each passing weekend, and the last few days have arguably been its most comical. It wasn't just us who were robbed though, as Newcastle, Everton and Arsenal can all feel cheated by the very thing that is supposed to prevent controversial and incorrect decisions being made by referees in the modern era. On this week's show, James and Will discuss the situation in detail before looking ahead to this week's games with FCSB in the Conference League and Sunday's visit of Newcastle. We also have a double-header Oppostion View this week as Horia and Filip from the Romanian Football Platform join us to preview Thursday's Conference League clash at London Stadium before Will catches up with The Athletic's Newcastle Correspondent, Chis Waugh, to chat all things Newcastle before Sunday. 193. Our season starts now! (or maybe after Spurs and Chelsea)
Finally we're off the mark! Our first win and first goal of the Premier League season came at Villa Park on Sunday but, had Steven Gerrard's team been a bit better than they are, it could've been a completely different story. David Moyes opted to start with five at the back but following a turgid opening 45 minutes, he decided to revert to the tried and tested 4-2-3-1 formation and suddenly things began to happen. Said Benrahma came on at half-time and instantly gave us some energy and intent going forward, and eventually Pablo Forbals expertly directed the winner over Emi Martinez's head, via a Villa defender's knee. Absolute genius finish! Now we're off the mark it feels like our season starts now, but we have Spurs and Chelsea next to threaten us building up any kind of momentum. This week, James and Will react to the win at Villa as well as discuss our Europa Conference League draw, which includes us coming up against Anderlecht, Silkeborg and FCSB in Group B this season. Also on the show, Will chats to Spurs fan and talkSPORT presenter Paul Coyte ahead of Wednesday night's huge game in Stratford, as well as broadcaster Tom Sheen about Chelsea ahead of Saturday afternoon's trip to Stamford Bridge. 192. Moyes' Men go Missing against Boring Bogey Brighton (again!)
Once again we've failed to beat our bogey team, Brighton & Hove Albion. Not only that, we were comfortably beaten by them at home to make it three defeats from three without scoring at the beginning of this new Premier League season. It's getting a bit boring now, isn't it? David Moyes' players practically went missing on Sunday and have now left us rock-bottom of the Premier League - how depressing! But last week we did pick up our first win of the season in the Europa Conference League as we beat Danish outfit Viborg FF 3-1 to take a relatively comfortable lead into this Thursday's second-leg. We're once again joined by Henry Nicholls from Denmark in Football to get his view on the first-leg and how he sees the second playing out in Denmark. Also this week, we're treated to a very special voice note from friend of the show Tim Warwood, who gave us his views ahead of West Ham's trip to Villa on Sunday, while Will from the Talk of the Trinity podcast also dials in for a chat about his beloved Villa. 191. Rob is banished from the Jones family - feat. Ex-Premier League referee Mark Halsey
Sometimes it's just not your day, and that was definitely the case on Sunday as we lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. An unfairly disallowed goal, missed penalty, wrong decision not to send off a Forest defender and hitting the woodwork three times? Yeah, it just wasn't our day. James and Will give their views on all the big talking points from Sunday's defeat while we're also joined by ex-Premier League referee Mark Halsey, who gave his verdict on all the big refereeing decisions in the game. Also on the show, James officially removes referee Rob Jones from the Jones family, the boys are joined by Henry Nicholls from Football In Denmark to help preview our Europa Conference League qualifier against Viborg on Thursday and Brighton fan Jeremiah dials in to give us his view on Sunday's Premier League clash at London Stadium. 190. From one curse to another as Diop downs tools
The lads return this week to look back at the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on the opening weekend of the 22/23 Premier League season, after Erling Halland made very easy work of our makeshift defence. We appear to have gone from being a club with a striker curse to one with a defender curse as David Moyes was forced to pair Ben Johnson with Kurt Zouma at the back after Craig Dawson was ruled out with a thigh strain and Issa Diop supposedly refused to play ahead of his reported move to Fulham. Still, a 2-0 scoreline is a respectable one when you consider the circumstances and the huge gap in class between ourselves and Pep Guardiola's squad of superstars. Also this week, the lads are joined by Graeme Bryce, Midlands Football Correspondent at The Sun, to get the lowdown on Nottingham Forest ahead of next weekend, while the lads also ponder what Moyes might decide to do in the final weeks of the transfer window, especially given the continued lack of depth in some key areas of the squad. As always, it's a great show with lots to discuss, so make sure you subscribe and tell your mates about how great the podcast is! It's always very much appreciated. Come on you Irons! 189. Getting inked like Scamacca ahead of battle with fellow marquee attacker
West Ham's pre-season is done and now we can finally look ahead to Sunday's first game of the season against Premier League champions Manchester City. The squad is no where near ready, with at least four new faces required before we can truly say we've fully strengthened this summer, but at least we can finally look forward to welcoming meaningful football back into our lives. On this week's show, our first proper one of the 22/23 campaign, James and Will mostly look ahead to the City clash and are joined by friend of the show and 93:20 Podcast's very own Ste Tudor, who was equally as pessimistic as we are ahead of the weekend. Ste admits City are not yet up to full speed from a fitness point of view and will need to iron out potential issues with Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, who are clearly yet to land on the same page judging by Sunday's Community Shield defeat to Liverpool. Also on this week's show, James reveals he's getting his first tattoos at the age of 34 and Will accuses him of going through an early mid-life crisis, while following last week's admission that he absolutely hates Tennis, Will reveals he's been playing Tennis with a mate. Confusing! As always, it's a great show with lots to discuss and we've also managed to keep our promise of a more streamlined show - hopefully we can stick to it as the season goes on! Come on you Irons! You can follow the podcast here: Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. Facebook: We Are West Ham podcast. Instagram: @WeAreWestHamPod The lads can be found @WilliamPugh_ and @ByJamesJones. 188. We're BACK! Third degree burns, pre-season panic & transfer hysteria
After over a month off to recharge their batteries, James and Will are back to get the We Are West Ham Podcast underway for the new season. Having missed out on a huge chunk of the summer, the lads catch up with some obligatory mundane chat, including James' story how he managed to get third-degree burns on a stag do in Spain and Will's hatred of proper tennis but love for the exhibition type. Then the real discussion begins, as the lads discuss pre-season so far and, of course, all the latest transfer rumours - it appears we're about to end a three-year wait for a striker signing! Despite the season being less than two weeks away, there's loads to discuss this week, including the decision to streamline the podcast format a little bit. All of the above and so much more in this week's episode. We're delighted to back in your ears and hopefully the feeling is mutual! Come on you Irons! You can follow the podcast here: Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. Facebook: We Are West Ham podcast. Instagram: @WeAreWestHamPod The lads can be found @WilliamPugh_ and @ByJamesJones. Ep 187187: 21/22 End of Season REVIEW - West Ham memories to last a lifetime!
First of all, sorry we're late! We recorded this episode way back on the 31st May but since then, life's got in the way a little bit. We've both been on holidays and work has been a bit mental for the both of us - it is the beginning of the transfer window after all. But we're finally bringing you our annual season review, where we break down everything that happened throughout what eventually turned into one of the most memorable seasons of our lifetimes. That run to the Europa League semi-final will never be forgotten, beating the likes of Sevilla and Lyon along the way - that night in Lyon will be hart to beat, won't it!? But then the fact we still finished 7th in the Premier League, despite not signing anyone in January and going so deep in Europe, must not be sniffed at. So in this episode, we take a walk down memory lane, beginning all the way back in August when we kicked off the season by thrashing Newcastle at St. James' Park. There were some low points along the way (we wouldn't be West Ham without them), but mostly it's just a jolly good chat about all the great things we got to experience. We also take some time to thank every single one of you, especially those who have engaged with us both on social media throughout the season and who have kindly bought us beers via donations on Buy Me A Beer. We are so grateful for every single one of you - thank you! And then we finish off a review of our Betway Charity Bets, with final totals from all of us as we took our two-season fundraising to over £20k! Remember, we recorded this at the end of May so much of the intro is a little out of date, but it's still worth listening anyway. Obviously! From the bottom of our hearts, thanks so much for listening this season and for all the kind and supportive messages. We love you all. Will & James xx Come on you Irons. The Brighton opposition view will be uploaded separately later this week. You can follow the podcast here: Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. Facebook: We Are West Ham podcast. Ep 186186: A Noble departure before Brighton
West Ham’s home fans bid an emotional farewell to club legend Mark Noble on Sunday on the same day the Irons earned an excellent point against champions in waiting Man City. Jarrod Bowen scored a fantastic brace to cap of an excellent campaign before Jack Grealish and a Vladimir Coufal own-goal saw City level. Lukasz Fabianski pulled off a brilliant save to deny Riyad Mahrez from the penalty spot late on to deliver a result and a performance to match the emotion of the occasion as Noble said goodbye to the West Ham faithful for a final time as a player. Will Pugh and James Jones are back for the final normal format podcast of the season to chat all things Noble, City and much more. The lads celebrate another Betway charity bet win before making their final picks of the season for the Seagulls game. Before the boys say goodbye for the penultimate time this season. From the bottom of our hearts, thanks so much for listening this season and for all the kind and supportive messages. We love you all. Will & James xx Come on you Irons. Ep 184184: Opposition View: Manchester City, with Stephen Tudor from the 93:20 Podcast
Just like last week, things have been a bit up the air for myself and Will but we couldn't go a week without bringing you the Opposition View. This week, we host Manchester City in a game with so much riding on it for both clubs. Victory for us will all but guarantee European football again next season and will put us in a great position to leapfrog Man United into the top six. For City, three points will all but guarantee them yet another Premier League title. And then there's the not-so-small matter of Mark Noble's last home game before he retires next week. It's going to be an emotional one and we will of course give him a wonderful send-off. Joining James on the Opposition View this week is friend of the show Stephen Tudor, from the 93:20 Podcast, to chat all things Man City. Ste gives his views on the title race, City's new-found rivalry with Liverpool, the bargain capture of Erling Haaland, how thinks Sunday's clash will go and much, much more! As always, this one's not to be missed! Come on you Irons. You can follow the podcast here: Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. Facebook: We Are West Ham podcast. Ep 182182: It's the Eintracht countdown!
West Ham lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal on Sunday. It came after a Europa League semi-final first leg defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt at London Stadium last Thursday. But Will Pugh and James Jones refuse to be downbeat ahead of Thursday’s massive second leg in Germany. The excitement is palpable as Will prepares to head to Frankfurt and the lads also let themselves imagine what it might be like to see Mark Noble and Declan Rice lift the trophy. The boys look back to the last two games as well as looking ahead to Thursday v Frankfurt and the Premier League visit to Norwich on Sunday. The lads also make their Betway charity bet selections ahead of the Carrow Road clash. Before TalkSPORT’s Jake Watson joins to give the lowdown from the relegated Norwich camp and chat about joining Will on a recent 'live like a Premier League player day' at Chadwell Heath thanks to Betway. Will and James wrap up by looking back at West Ham Women’s 3-0 WSL defeat at Man Utd before they say goodbye at the beginning of another enthralling week for West Ham United. History has already been made and the mindblowing journey continues Thursday night. Drink it in. And of course David Moyes’ mighty Hammers can do it. Come on you Irons. Ep 181181: Who else has got a (European) semi? - ft Eintracht Frankfurt oppo view
West Ham lost 1-0 at Chelsea on Sunday in oh so frustrating fashion. Craig Dawson was sent off as he gave away a late penalty which Jorginho missed before Christian Pulisic bagged the winner at Stamford Bridge. But do Hammers fans really care with a Europa League semi-final first-leg against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night? Will Pugh certainly doesn’t on this week’s pod but James Jones is far more conservative. Bastian Roth from the Eintracht podcast dials in to give an opposition view ahead of the mammoth clash. The lads make their Betway charity bet selections ahead of Sunday’s home Premier League game against Arsenal. Before Dan Cutts, SunSport editor and huge Gooner, joins to give another lowdown from the opposition camp. Will and James wrap up by congratulating West Ham’s Women on a great WSL win at Reading before they say goodbye at the beginning of another enthralling week for West Ham United. History has already been made and the mindblowing journey continues Thursday night. Drink it in. Come on you Irons. You can follow the podcast here: Twitter: @We Are_West Ham.
