285. Forever stuck in 14th

It was a hard-earned point for West Ham on the road against Bournemouth. Will and James break down the game and if Julen Lopetegui is finally beginning to find a system that works (sort of). The Premier League table remains tight with us not far off Europe or the bottom three! What way are we heading? It is our last pod of the year as we take a Christmas break, so we reflect on 2024 and our hopes for 2025. 284. Thankful they're worse (somehow)

The Julen Lopetegui can has been well and truly kicked down the road. Will, James and special guest Tom discuss a much-needed but not impressive win over Wolves (somehow they are worse than us and that is the only reason why we won). The boys break down Lopetegui's bizarre tactics, strange subs and inability to see the obvious areas where it is all going wrong. Does he dodge the sack for the entire season? There is also chat about Mohammed Kudus's form, Jarrod Bowen's brilliance and Michail Antonio's car crash. Opposition View: Wolves, with Will from talkSPORT

The ultimate 'El Sackico' is here. Somehow both Julen Lopetegui and Gary O'Neil are still in work but the loser on Monday night is almost certainly out the door. Both teams come into this having suffered shockingly bad results in midweek. The Hammers' 3-0 loss to Leicester incredibly did not win the worst result of the week as Wolves were smashed 4-0 by a bang average Everton side. We discuss where both clubs should go next given the inevitable sackings in store and why it has gone so wrong this season. 283. Crash back down to Earth - including a Leicester opposition view

Disastrous, depressing and dismal. All that hope from the Newcastle game evaporated in 45 minutes at the hands of Arsenal. Will and James are back to chat about where it all went wrong against the Gunners and we also look forward to an absolutely huge game against Leicester, with an opposition view bedded in with Jake Watson from The Big Strong Leicester Boys Podcast Despite the awfulness of West Ham's performance, there are reasons to be happy as Will has made a pledge that will be music to many listeners' ears (you've heard of Dry January, it is time for Dry Moyes'. Also, James goes on a rant about Arsenal's "dark arts" in one not to miss. And after things kicked-off in the stands (not just every few minutes on the pitch in the first-half), we discuss how to stop letting away fans in our home end. Opposition View: Arsenal, with the Deluded Gooner

There is little time to bask in the glory of that exceptional Newcastle win as Arsenal are in town! Will is joined by CJ Needham (aka the Deluded Gooner) to preview Saturday night's London derby. It is a must-win game for Arsenal as they trail leaders Liverpool by nine points and a loss to the Hammers will give them a mountain to climb. Can West Ham ruin their title hopes for the third season running? The lads also discuss the return of Declan Rice and the way he is being used tactically by Mikel Arteta. Plus, CJ tells us exactly how his side will score beyond Lukasz Fabianski. Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 282. Pleasantly surprised

Wow! Did anyone see that coming? West Ham out played Newcastle in a well-deserved win to ease the pressure on Julen Lopetegui. It all means there’s a positive feel around an episode for the first time in a while and a break from the reminiscing of the David Moyes era from Will. We break down where it all went right against Newcastle and how it could prove the turning point of the season as Lopetegui may have finally cracked the midfield conundrum. Opposition View: Newcastle, with Aaron from The Chronicle

The international break is over and West Ham are back! Unfortunately, the return comes with little enthusiasm given how the season has gone so far - but perhaps Julen Lopetegui has finally cracked it during the break? West Ham face a tough trip to Newcastle on Monday night and we look ahead to the game with Newcastle reporter Aaron Stokes. 281. Dismay or disarray?

The case to stick by the under-fire Julen Lopetegui was not helped by a snoozefest goalless draw at home to Everton. Things were so dull and uninspiring that Will and James use this episode to chat about West Ham's disastrous last six months and the current feeling of despair around the club. We're seemingly all in agreement that the writing is on the wall for Lopetegui, but should fingers also be getting pointed at David Sullivan and Tim Steidten? Will a West Ham-less Moyes ever work? Would you welcome Moyes back? Where does the club go from here? Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. An utterly dismal 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest leaves Julen Lopetegui moving ever close to losing his job. Will is back from his spell on the sidelines and he is joined, as always, by James to break down a yet another disastrous performance. 278. Descending into despair

Derby disaster! An embarrassing second-half display saw West Ham demolished 4-1 by Tottenham. Will and James cover all the big talking points as pressure mounts on Julen Lopetegui. The lack of distinctive style of play and clear game plan is a huge worry. But is it still too early to judge, especially given the horrible fixture list at the start of the season? We also reflect on the Mohammed Kudus head loss red card, performances from the likes of Alphonse Areola and Guido Rodriguez, as well as what managers are out there to replace Lopetegui should it get worse! 276. A season of mediocrity ahead?

West Ham became the latest team to suffer one of the Bees' buzzing starts in the 1-1 draw with Brentford. After Bryan Mbuemo's strike in the first minute, it was Tomas Soucek once again dragging the Hammers out of trouble with a massive goal. Is the Czech midfielder disrespected and under-appreciated by supporters? And is he one of the best the club have had in the Premier League era? Thank you super Danny Ings. Who thought we would be saying that? Will and James chat about the underwhelming performance from West Ham against Fulham - despite a respectable point in the end. The lads share their thoughts on Julen Lopetegui’s style so far. Are there reasons to believe it’s close to clicking or do the Hammers remain poor defensively and dull given the talent going forward? 271. A new era has begun but patience is needed

Julen Lopetegui has his first win as West Ham manager. New signings caught the eye, Jarrod Bowen got his first goal with the captain's armband on and West Ham got their first clean sheet since January - against a London rival who James has a particular dislike for. Despite the win being the first in a new era for the club, it was one of the old guard in Tomas Soucek that put in a huge performance in midfield and was again on the scoresheet (even rescuing a ball boy for bonus brownie points). Is about time our criminally underrated Czech Mate gets the credit he deserves? And how long does Konstantinos Mavropanos and Michail Antonio remain in the starting XI amid new boys Jean-Clair Todibo and Niclas Fullkrug pushing for starts? 270. Comparison is the thief of joy

A new era has begun. In defeat. The 2-1 loss to Aston Villa last weekend was a frustrating one and, as seems to be the case with most things these days, completely split the fanbase. One half saw positives in the performance and signs that Julen Lopetegui's philosophy will eventually come good, while the other half felt like is much of the same as we saw under David Moyes and have already started comparing everything. Yep, you guessed it, it's the exact same thing on this podcast. James is upbeat and says he saw enough in the performance to be confident of eventual success. Will didn't see any of that and is still questioning the decision to part ways with David Moyes. So that debate and discussion understandably takes up the majority of this week's podcast, while the lads also discuss the ticket concessions again in more detail and then look ahead to Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace. Oh, and James gives the new signings his rating out of 10 after five of the eight new faces made their debuts. Will disagreed with almost all of them. Obviously. "Kudus might not be there!" - Harry Redknapp EXCLUSIVE!

269. Winning the transfer window, ending the striker curse & exploiting fans

WE'RE BACK! It's been an eventful summer and after a long break, James and Will are back for another season of the podcast. As is often the case with West Ham, there's loads to catch up on. We've seemingly won the transfer window, the club has decided it's going to charge fans, regardless of age or ability, the same price across the board (essentially pricing out thousands of fans from ever going to a game again) and the new season kicks off in a few days. Also this week, we introduce you to a new member of the pod - Alex! Alex is joining the podcast initially as a silent member, taking on all audio and video editing responsibilities, but over the course of the season he will join us to chat all things West Ham on the podcast. We're delighted to have Alex on board and we're sure you'll be delighted too! On this week's show, we discuss the concessions debacle, the transfer window and then look ahead to not only Aston Villa but the season as a whole. 268. Midsummer musings, including transfers, fixtures, England, concessions fiasco and more

After a month break, James and Will are back for a little midsummer catch-up about all things West Ham (and a little bit on England at the Euros). The lads discuss transfers, the new fixture list, the concessions fiasco and loads more. We also welcome the podcast's principle sponsor Miriam Errington from Miriam Errington conveyancing for a chat about how her sponsorship of the show has benefitted her business down under. Chad Yeomans from Betway, our charity partner, also joins us to talk about our disappointing season of charity bets, although he comes with a very generous gesture! Thank you to both Chad and Miriam for their incredible support this season - without them this podcast wouldn't exist! And of course, we want to thank all of our amazing listeners and subscribers around the world who continue to support us and give us such amazing engagement and feedback. We appreciate and love you all! This is a one off midsummer catch-up, but we'll be back properly nearer the start of the new season. End of season media panel - ‘Julen Lopetegui should leave if West Ham lie to him about transfers’ despite Tim Steidten bromance

Julen Lopetegui was confirmed as West Ham’s new manager just hours before the FA announced Lucas Paqueta has been hit with six charges - four relating to suspicious betting and two for non-compliance with an investigation. It capped a mad end to yet another rollercoaster campaign for the Hammers as legend David Moyes waved goodbye after spearheading the club’s most successful period in decades. And to cap of the season, Will Pugh is joined by three top journalists and friends of the podcast: Tom Rennie from TalkSPORT International and Sirius XM plus Hammers correspondents Jacob Steinberg (The Guardian) and Jack Rosser (The Sun). The guys talk all things Moyes, Lopetegui, Tim Steidten, Paqueta, David Sullivan, summer transfer plans, hopes and fears for next season and beyond, and of course how many more decades Michail Antonio will play up front for the Irons. It’s a truly brilliant episode with some razor sharp insight from proper professionals with contacts at every level of the club. As always, thanks for listening! Opposition View: Manchester City, with David Mooney from Blue Moon Podcast

West Ham go to Man City with almost the entire non-Gooner London population, including some Hammers fans, wanting them to lose to deny Arsenal the title. David Mooney from The Blue Moon podcast joins Will to discuss that notion plus the idea that Man City’s record fourth consecutive Premier League title, and any future and previous success is tainted by the financially manufactured way it has been procured. The Hammers are set to finish ninth and will say goodbye to David Moyes at the Etihad after a historic spell as manager with the future unknown and fans still split. And it’s left all of us feeling different types of emotional and uncertain about what the future holds. Thanks for listening this season and we hope you will stay with us for the next campaign. 267. Predicting how many goals West Ham will let Man City score to stop Arsenal winning the title

As final home games of the season go, that was pretty good. The sun was out, we won and most of the fans inside the London Stadium stayed around to give David Moyes heaps of appreciation before he departs at the end of the campaign. Will wasn't pleased with the relatively under the radar approach West Ham gave to his send off but it was still nice to see close to a full stadium stay behind after the game to give him some love. That was the least he deserved after the unbelievable journey he's taken us on over the last four years. Also this week, we discuss the win over Luton, George Earthy's first West Ham goal for the club and the part West Ham could play in the title race, which is likely to be absolutely no part at all as we inevitably get thrashed 6-0. There are only a few more podcast episodes left before we have a little summer break, but we've got a bit of a treat coming for you once the season finishes so make sure you're subscribed! 266. Everyone's just given up as the Lopetegui era edges closer

You didn't need us to tell you how bad it was at the weekend. The 5-0 scoreline says all you need to know. The players appear to have given up and seemingly so has David Moyes as he edges closer to the exit door. And reports this week suggest his replacement will be Julen Lopetegui, who has reportedly agreed terms with the club having rejected both AC Milan and Bayern Munich. Sections of the fanbase say it's an underwhelming appointment but that's propably because the club had everyone believing there was an actual chance of appointing Ruben Amorim, which was obviously never an actual go-er. So this week's episode is mostly about the speculation surrounding our new manager and discussion about what needs to be done this summer in order for us to continue moving forwards as a football club. 265. How much time will the rebuild be given?

It's generally accepted that David Moyes is nearing the end of what has been a wonderful four year tenure as manager of West Ham. But whoever his replacement is, how much time will he be given to rebuild? As one era ends, another begins, but this new era will have to begin with a whole rebuild of the squad and a new tactical philosophy coached into them. It will take time, arguably longer than a single season, and will likely need at least 3-4 transfer windows for the new manager to bring in the right players to be effective in implementing his footprint on the club. But will he get that long? Will the fans be patient enough? What signs will need to be there for fans to sit tight and accept it needs time, not more change at the first sign of trouble? The last thing the club needs is a run of constantly changing the manager until one comes in, hits the ground running and provides immediate success. The likelihood is it won't happen like that. We're probably looking at a transitional season where we finish between 10th-13th, before signs of real progress kick in. But will fans accept that after the previous four years of success, delivered to them by the very manager many of them want to see the back of? That's all discussed and more on this week's pod! As always, thanks for listening! Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 264. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened

Supporting West Ham is never dull, you can always be sure of that. In the space of just a few days our wonderful club came to within minutes of becoming the first team to beat Bayer Leverkusen this season, after putting in one of the best performances in the modern era, and then put in one of the worst performances in the modern era by losing 5-2 to Crystal Palace, having been 4-0 down after just 31 minutes. As a result of being knocked out of the Europa League and losing so heavily at Selhurst Park, it's looking more and more likely that Moyes will leave the club once the season is over. Although no official confirmation has been made yet, we're already hearing reports of meetings with potential replacements being had, including Liverpool target Ruben Amorim and former Real Madrid, Sevilla and Wolves boss, Julen Lopetegui. So this week, the lads talk through why Moyes' time is likely up, who they think should replace them and give their thoughts on the very chalk and cheese performances against Leverkusen and Crystal Palace. Opposition View: "West Ham's lack of effort surprised me!" - Bayer Leverkusen (2nd leg), with Kevin Scheuren

After a really great chat with Bayer Leverkusen fan and podcaster, Kevin Scheuren, in Germany last week, Will caught up with him once again ahead of Thursday's second-leg at London Stadium. Despite defending admirably for 85 minutes in the first-leg, Leverkusen's two late goals means we have a huge mountain to climb on Thursday if we're going to secure a place in the Europa League semi-final. Kevin said last week that Leverkusen were going to beat the crap out of West Ham in the first-leg and he was pretty much correct in his prediction. While it wasn't a thrashing by any means, their 33 shots to our one says all you need to know about how the game played out. A repeat cannot happen this week and Kevin has urged David Moyes and West Ham to be braver in their attempts to become the first team to beat Xabi Alonso's side in any competition this season, after he was surprised at our lack of effort in trying to score a goal in the first-leg. Once again, this is a great chat with Kevin, who has been a superb guest on the podcast over the last week. And finally, congratulations to Kevin and Bayer Leverkusen for being crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time in their history. What an unbelievable achievement! Come on you Irons! 263. We've put our own hurdles in our own way

After losing 2-0 to both Bayer Leverkusen and Fulham over the last few days, West Ham's chances of competing in Europe for a fourth consecutive season are hanging by a thread. We have a mountain to climb in the second-leg vs. the newly crowned Bundesliga champions and failure to beat Fulham at home means we're now reliant on the likes of Newcastle, Man United and Chelsea all slipping up in the race for a top-seven finish. If they don't it'll likely be a 9th placed finish and the end of our love affair with European competition. But what has led to this after such a strong start to the season? It's a very similar situation to two years ago when a failure to invest in January led to the team running out of steam. It appears David Moyes and the club haven't learned their lesson, with a lack of options on the bench in recent weeks appearing to cost us. And what does this all mean for David Moyes' future? It's hard to see how he remains in the job beyond the summer. We discuss all of the above and more this week, with Leverkusen and Crystal Palace opposition views coming later this week. West Ham United have yet another historic clash approaching as they take on ‘unbeaten in 41 games Bayer Leverkusen’ in the Europa League quarter-final first leg in Germany on Thursday. Will Pugh is out there for the game after his underwhelming trip to Freiburg in the last round ended in a 1-0 defeat. And he caught up with German journalist, podcaster and enormous Bayer Leverkusen fan Kevin Schueren ahead of the match on all things Xabi Alonso, Victor Boniface, the Bundesliga title, the threat of Ultra attacks on West Ham fans, team news and of course any hope David Moyes and the boys have of ending their incredible unbeaten run and reaching a third consecutive European semi-final. 262. It's time for peak Moyes-ball and we're so ready for it

It's nice to come out of a game of football without feeling hard done by, wronged and aggrieved by a scandalous VAR decision. This time, we were on the right end of it and it was Wolves fans crying scandal. However, this decision WAS correct and Max Kilman's goal WAS rightly ruled out for offside. No scandal this week. Nothing to see here, Wolves fans. It was a huge win and keeps us well in the hunt for another year of European football by virtue of our league position. It was also the perfect result to take into what is without doubt our biggest game of the season so far. We travel to Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday to try and be the first team in 42 games to beat Xabi Alonso's side. If ever there was a need for peak Moyes-ball, which we all know has come under intense scrutiny this season, it's now. Will is heading out to Leverkusen and will hopefully be getting an Oppo View before the big game. In the meantime, you've got James and Will reacting to the Wolves game this week and, at the very beginning, James being attacked by his wife and son with Nerf guns! As always, thanks for listening! Opposition View: Wolves, with Dan Baylis from the Wolves 77 Club Podcast

It's getting towards the business end of the season and after a good, hard-fought draw against rivals Spurs earlier this week, West Ham are still well in the mix for a fourth consecutive season of European qualification. One team threatening to beat us to it, though, is Gary O'Neil's Wolves, who have had a relatively good campaign, if not slightly inconsistent. They're currently three points behind us with a game in hand and, with all the other teams around us having a game advantage over us, there is so much importance in ensuring we continue to pick up points between now and the end of the season. Joining us this week is Dan Baylis from the Wolves 77 Club Podcast to give us his thoughts on his beloved Wolves ahead of Saturday. 261. Football isn't fun anymore, ft. Ricky Sacks from Last Word On Spurs

West Ham somehow managed to throw away a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes to go at Newcastle to lose 4-3. And it depends who you talk to as to who was to blame. Host Will Pugh gives his verdict on this latest podcast during the small window of time between that St James’ Park defeat and the mouthwatering home Premier League clash against Tottenham on Tuesday. Spoiler alert, he blames the dodgy officials for awarding Newcastle a penalty even though Anthony Gordon fouled Kalvin Phillips, not the other way around, rather than David Moyes. He also gives his opinion on Phillips’ disastrous start to life at West Ham and the midfielder sticking his middle finger up to the ‘fan’ who waited by the bus and shouted ‘useless’ at the England man as he left the stadium. Ricky Sacks from the Last Word on Spurs also chimes in with his thoughts on Tuesday’s game with the Hammers trying to stay 7th and Tottenham looking to leapfrog Aston Villa into fourth. 260. Record breaking nights in Europe and record breaking waits in the Premier League

It was a relatively successful week in the life of West Ham United. A club-record 5-0 victory over Freiburg in the Europa League set up a third consecutive European semi-final, before a hugely controversial 1-1 draw with high-flying Aston Villa in the Premier League. The controversy was, as always, sparked by VAR and their failure to exercise their own 'Clear and Obvious' guidelines. The second disallowed goal was indeed handball, but the first? There is no conclusive evidence that the ball hit Michail Antonio's hand, so the onfield decision should've stood. Instead, VAR failed to do its job and ruled out the goal on what appears to be a hunch. Clear and obvious? Yeah, right. This week we discuss both of last week's games before the international break, and also go over the quarter-final draw against the unbeatable Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League. We'll be off next week but will have an Opposition View for you ahead of the trip to Newcastle. As always, thanks for listening! Opposition View: Aston Villa, with BBC Sport reporter Tim Warwood

West Ham are through to the Europa League quarter-final after an emphatic 5-0 thrashing of Freiburg in the second leg on Thursday. And it’s another trip to Germany for the Hammers as they drew Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the quarters. That tie will kick off on April 11 but before that, it’s back to the day job with Aston Villa visiting in the Premier League on Sunday. A stressed-out Will, fresh from booking his flights to Germany, complete with Cheltenham hangover speaks to legendary opposition view guest and sports journalist Tim Warwood about his beloved Villa’s trip to the London Stadium. And as always, Tim has come armed with a voice note from his fellow Villa faithful on the Holte End. As always, thanks for listening! Opposition View: SC Freiburg (2nd Leg), with Michael from Fuchsletalk Podcast

West Ham must beat Freiburg at home in Thursday’s Europa League last 16 second leg after last week’s 1-0 defeat in Germany. That would mean a third European quarter-final in three years for the Hammers which would be a quite simply staggering achievement. The last two results have not been great but West Ham were not a million miles away from a positive result in either game. Freiburg fan Michael from the Fuchsletalk podcast joins Will Pugh to look back on last week’s game in Germany and ahead to Thursday’s clash in London. It promises to be a nerve-wracking and exciting evening at London Stadium and here’s hoping David Moyes’ boys can get it over the line. As always, thanks for listening! 259. How many handballs before it's handball?

How many handballs does it take before it's classed as handball? That was the question we asked PGMOL over the weekend after West Ham were denied a penalty in the last minute against Burnley because a ridiculous law of the game says that if a player kicks or heads the ball against his own hand, it is not handball. In this particular scenario, the ball hit the Burnley player's head, then his left hand and then his right hand. So we asked, does the second handball cancel out the first? PGMOL's answer was "no." Therefore, how many times does a player need to handball it before it's deemed handball? They couldn't answer that one. James and Will discussed that incident and loads more on this week's pod, before looking ahead to Thursday's Europa League last-16 second-leg against Freiburg and Sunday's visit of Aston Villa. Freiburg reaction and Burnley Opposition View, with Joe from Turfcast

Will made the last-minute decision to travel to Freiburg for Thursday night's Europa League last 16 1st leg clash and traveled back on Friday having regretted every single second of it. A late Freiburg goal and a very, very late VAR calamity means we have it all to do at London Stadium next week, but we are still well and truly in this tie. Before then, we host Burnley in Stratford on Sunday. In this episode, Will spends the first half of the hour giving his experience in Germany and his reaction to the game, before speaking with Joe from Turfcast ahead of Sunday's top-flight meeting with the Clarets.
