Opposition View: SC Freiburg, with Michael from Fuchsletalk Podcast

West Ham United are back in the Europa League knockout stages once again! Freiburg is hardly a glamour tie, but after the initial disappointment of not drawing AC Milan subsided, there is a renewed belief among Hammers fans that we can go deep once again and hopefully repeat some of the historic scenes we witnessed the last time we were in the knockout stages of this competition. In this episode, Will speaks to Freiburg fan Michael from the Fuchsletalk podcast ahead of Thursday’s away first leg in the last 16. They cover everything from the train strikes in Germany which may affect travelling Hammers fans to the Bundesliga side’s likely setup and danger men. Will is heading out to Freiburg on Thursday morning and like most West Ham supporters, cannot wait to see David Moyes’ mighty Irons in action on the continent once again. This is what we were promised when we were ripped from our spiritual home at Upton Park and dragged to the London Stadium so the We Are West Ham podcast will be damned if we are not going to squeeze every last drop of enjoyment out of it. Thanks for listening everyone. West Ham are massive everywhere we gooooooo! As always, thanks for listening! 258. A heartfelt apology to Alphonse Areola

It's funny what a couple of wins can do for morale. Back-to-back Premier League victories has led us to 7th in the Premier League and in a strong position for a fourth consecutive season playing in Europe. This time, a lot of the thanks has to go to Alphonse Areola, whose saved penalty and string of saves at Goodison Park led us towards a brilliant 3-1 victory in David Moyes' old stomping ground. Speaking of Areola's penalty save; it sparked a heartfelt apology from James this week, who was previously very critical of the Frenchman's failure to get anywhere close to saving any of Blackburn's penalties in the shoot-out defeat last season. Also this week, we look ahead to the return of the Europa League on Thursday and then the visit of Burnley on Sunday. Also, we mentioned in the podcast that we both completed the London Winter Run 10k in support of Cancer Research a couple of weeks ago. 257. The David Moyes Hokey-Cokey

That's more like it, isn't it!? After weeks of talk surrounding David Moyes' negative style of play, which had stopped getting results, West Ham turned up at London Stadium on Monday night and put on a bit of a show. It wasn't perfect, not by any stretch, but we scored four goals and overall looked like we wanted to have a go at playing football for the first time in 2024. Every time we got the ball we looked like we wanted to make something happen, while out of possession we pressed well and put Brentford under pressure. That's the approach we've been crying out for! It was a much-needed victory and it puts us back in contention for a top-eight finish and potentially a fourth consecutive European qualification. If we play like we did against Brentford for the remainder of the season, we've got a huge chance of achieving what we were hoping for in the first-half of the campaign. Obviously, it appears that will likely rest on the fitness of Lucas Paqueta, who makes things tick in this team. It's no surprise we've failed to win a single game this season in which he hasn't featured. This week, we discuss the overall performance on Monday night, react to comments from listeners on the socials and then look ahead to the trip to Everton on Sunday. Also, we mentioned in the podcast that we both completed the London Winter Run 10k in support of Cancer Research last weekend. 256. This fairytale won't have a happy ending

It has been a fairytale but, unlike the ones we see in the movies, this one won't have a happy ending. David Moyes' time as West Ham manager is surely coming to its conclusion. The latest defeat to Nottingham Forest has put even more pressure on him as his players continue to seek a first win of 2024. But we must not forget that while it's likely to end very soon, the era Moyes has overseen has been the most successful and, without a doubt, the most unexpected periods in a generation. He return with us one point above the relegation zone and seriously fearing dropping back into the Championship. He will leave having led the club to its first silverware since 1980, secured three consecutive European campaigns for the first time in the club's entire history and finished in the top seven of the Premier League twice. He gave us moments like Sevilla at home, Lyon away and, of course, that night in Prague. He gave us Jarrod Bowen, oversaw Declan Rice's growth from promising youngster to one of the best midfielders in world football and delivered on the promises made by the board when we moved to Stratford. European football. He delivered all of that in just four years, all from a standing start. All from a point of imminent relegation. Whatever you think of David Moyes right now, you simply cannot disregard the success he has had and the impact he has had on our great club. His legacy will live on, even if he will eventually leave under a dark cloud. That provides the bulk of our discussion this week. Also, we mention in the podcast that we're both taking part in this weekend's London Winter Run 10k in support of Cancer Research. 255. What a load of Arse-nal

We know we made a pact to not discuss David Moyes' future on the podcast again, but how can we not? Since we last recorded, we've been battered 6-0 by Arsenal, sold two wingers without replacing them and have failed to register a single win in our first seven matches of 2024. Surely the club needs to make a decision one way or another now? Stalling on a new contract only increases the uncertainty surrounding Moyes' future, and might perhaps be contributing to the current severe downturn in form. On this week's pod, we discuss recent form, touch on Moyes' future/contract situation, mull over the failings of the January transfer window and so much more! As always, thanks for listening! 254. Sucking all the fun out of football

VAR is getting a little bit silly now, isn't it? Not having it against Bristol City arguably worked against us and then having it against Sheffield United meant we were all but robbed of three points at Bramall Lane. Put simply, it's sucking all the fun out of the game we love so much. The big question on everyone's lips is, how can enlisting the help of technology make referees worse at officiating football matches? None of it makes any sense! That's the main topic on our agenda this week as we look back on the games against Bristol City and Sheffield United, before we run the rule over some of the rumoured comings and goings in the January transfer window. And we apologise in advance but, this will be last podcast for a couple of weeks because Will is off on holiday and James is about to start a new job. Call it a bit of annual leave, but we'll be back after the Arsenal game, hopefully celebrating three-in-a-row against the Premier League's champions-elect. As always, thanks for listening! Opposition View: Sheffield United, with Hal from The Sheff United Way Podcast

After losing to Bristol City in the FA Cup earlier in the week, West Ham will need to be so much better on Sunday when they visit Sheffield United in the Premier League. The Blades are rock bottom of the Premier League with the worst defence and the fewest points, so many will have this game down as a formality, but given our injury issues and the performance from our fringe players against Bristol City, we shouldn't be so confident. Hal from the Sheffield United Way Podcast joins us for the second time this season to give us the lowdown on his beloved Blades, before Will signs iff with an update on the Betway Charity Bets. 253. A David Moyes vow, with Analytics United's Jack Elderton

The FA Cup third round draw against Bristol City wasn't ideal, as it requires a replay to be played at a time when most clubs will be enjoying a mini-winter break, but we've decided to stop all complaining on this podcast for the foreseeable. Or at least James has! James returns for the first time in 2024 by admitting that he's no longer questioning David Moyes' long-term credentials as manager of West Ham and is instead vowing to enjoy the second half of the season for what it's shaping up to be, which is another great success. Joining us this week is Analytics United's Jack Elderton, who is also a huge West Ham fan and writer/scout for the club's official programme. He knows all there is to know about tactics, so what better person to discuss the job Moyes has done up to now with? This is a really, really insightful discussion, so make sure you pour yourself a cuppa and enjoy! 252. New year soul searching as West Ham top the festive form table

Well, well, well! Since our last podcast, West Ham have beaten Man United and Arsenal and draw at home to Brighton, topping the Premier League's festive form table in the process. It's a run of form that sees us sit 6th in the table going into 2024 and has many who were calling for David Moyes to be sacked wondering whether they'd pinned their flags to the correct mast. This week, Will goes solo due to James being tied up elsewhere, as he goes full blown Moyes love-in following recent results, with a few James-related digs thrown in for good measure. James is back next week to respond to the often defamatory accusations aimed at him by Will throughout. Also this week, we have a Bristol City Oppo View ahead of Sunday's FA Cup third round clash at London Stadium. We'll be back properly next week! 251. Poor squad management, or just a poor squad?

Having put in two very good performances against Freiburg and Wolves, West Ham approached the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool at Anfield with some confidence. But all that confidence was removed instantly when the starting XI was announced, with David Moyes making a number of changes to his starting XI. Clearly he has one eye on Saturday's Premier League clash against Manchester United. The performance that followed complimented the line-up. Poor, weak and no up to standard. It was no wonder we were thrashed 5-1. And it raises the question: has David Moyes' squad management been good enough this season? The likes of Ben Johnson, Thilo Kehrer and Pablo Fornals were all regular starters this season but have mostly been given sporadic appearances from the bench in 23/24. Johnson, for example, made only his third appearance of the campaign against Liverpool, and he was played out of position. How is he expected to put in a top quality performance against Liverpool at Anfield with so few minutes under his belt? So this week, James and Will debate the above in detail. Will refutes James' claims that Moyes' squad management, and inability to build a squad with strong depth, is costing us in games when first-team players need to be rested. Will, instead, believes it's just a case of the fringe players not being good enough anymore. What do you think? This will be our last full episode of 2023, so we want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting the podcast throughout 2023. It has been a historic year for the club AND the pod, so thank you to all of our subscribers - new and old - for making it so. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! See you all in 2024! Opposition View: Wolves, with Dan Baylis from Wolves 77 Club Podcast

After comfortably dispatching Freiburg to top our Europa League group on Thursday night, David Moyes' men return to Stratford on Sunday to take on Gary O'Neil's Wolves. Wolves have been inconsistent with their results so far this term, beating the likes of Tottenham and Man City but losing to Sheffield United and Crystal Palace, and have only won two games on the road this campaign. West Ham will want to get back to winning ways domestically after being thrashed 5-0 by Fulham last weekend, and a win here could see us climb into 6th if other results go our way. Joining us this week is friend of the show and Wolves podcaster, Dan Baylis, from the Wolves 77 Club Podcast. Dan gives his view on O'Neil, Wolves' terrible luck with VAR this season and loads more. 250. Typical West Ham as recent performances make everyone sick

If ever there was a three-day period that defined the term 'Typical West Ham', that was it. The win at Spurs was as unexpected as it was wonderful, only for us to completely ruin any confidence or optimism that result provided by going to Fulham and getting thrashed 5-0. Only West Ham, right? There are reports of a sickness bug making its way through the squad, which is being attributed to such a poor performance at Craven Cottage, but does it still warrant such an embarrassing result? If the players bounce back in style by beating Freiburg and Wolves this week, we can put the Fulham result down as a blip. If we don't and our current level of performance continue, it's difficult not to be worried about what's to come in the months ahead. We discuss all of that and more on this week's pod, before chatting to Julian from Spodcast Freiburg ahead of Thursday's big Europa League clash on Thursday. 249. The Big David Moyes Debate

West Ham are unbeaten in five games in all competitions, but three of those games relied on last-minute Tomas Soucek winners and the draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday was a hugely winnable game given the Eagles' lack of intensity going forward. So despite going unbeaten, fans are beginning to get more and more restless with David Moyes' approach. That led to James and Will having a very long and intense debate about his future at the club. James understands why fans are getting frustrated and are pushing for a change. Will, on the other hand, believes changing managers risks us dropping back into security and doesn't think we can do any better than Moyes right now. Also this week, we're joined by The Sun's Dean Scoggins, who is a huge Spurs fan and gives the full lowdown on Tottenham ahead of Thursday's trip to north London. We finish off with our Betway Charity Bets for Thursday before some final thoughts. Strap yourself in for this one, it gets heated at times! Let us know what side of the divide you're on. 248. Soucek's Divin intervention as West Ham get away with it at Burnley

We all knew David Moyes would start Danny Ings against Burnley despite knowing it should be Divin Mubama who got the nod instead. For the first 85 minutes of the game it was so obvious that the decision was very wrong, and it was underlined, bolded and italicised when Mubama threw himself at a near-post Kudus cross and forced Dara O'Shea to divert the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-1. Soucek's second constructive late winner ensure we came away with all three points. But surely now, it's Mubama who starts games up front while Michail Antonio is sidelined through injury? It has to be the way forward for Moyes' approach. Unfortunately, we can't be so sure. On this week's show, we look back on that win at Burnley, discuss the Betway Charity Bets and then look ahead to Thursday's Europa League clash with Backa Topola and Sunday's Premier League London Derby with Crystal Palace. Our Crystal Palace Opposition View will be released separately later this week. Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. Opposition View: Burnley, with Joe from Turfcast

The international break is finally over and now we can look ahead to Saturday's visit to Turf Moor as West Ham take on newly promoted Burnley in the Premier League. The Clarets have the second-worst defence in the Premier League this season, conceding 30 goals, so there is hope that David Moyes and his players will go to Turf Moor looking to take full advantage of that, especially if Jarrod Bowen is passed fit to play after picking up a knock while on international duty with England. After beating Nottingham Forest last time out, some confidence has returned amongst the fanbase but if we fail to win this weekend, that confidence will be very short-lived and there will no doubt be louder calls for the club to make a change in the dugout. Joining us this week on the Opposition View is Joe from Turfcast to preview the game and give us some insight into Vincent Kompany's Burnley. 247. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail

It is absolutely no surprise that we risk going into the busy festive period without a 'proper' striker. Michail Antonio's injury while on international duty with Jamaica means he could be out for months, leaving just Danny Ings and Divin Mubama as our only recognised strikers in the squad. One barely looks interested when he does get on the pitch, the other is only a teenager and has just 35 minutes of Premier League football to his name. Jarrod Bowen has been utilised there recently but that's not the point. When is the club going to learn that it needs to continue to invest in the striker department until they get it right? Haller and Scamacca didn't work, but doesn't mean they should just give up and just accept Antonio is the only man for the job. He's 33-years-old! We discuss all of that and more on this week's pod before the latest edition of the Claret & Blue, with this week's guest being huge Hammers fan Joe Connell. Our Burnley Opposition View will be released separately later this week. Remember, if you love what we do then PLEASE leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 246. A blend of Di Canio, Payet and Arnautovic as Moyes experiments again

Two wins in four days puts us back in control of our Europa League group and in the top-half of the Premier League table. The 1-0 win over Olympiacos on Thursday night wasn't pretty, but it was a much-needed win all the same. Then the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday was exciting and arguably more in need given our poor run of form in the league up to now. Now it's another international break, the last one of 2023, and we head into it with a lot of confidence. We travel to Burnley in two weeks, which gives us another opportunity to climb further into contention for a top-eight finish. On this week's episode, James and Will discuss... 🇬🇷 Europa League win over Olympiacos 🔴 Victory over Nottingham Forest 🔥 Bowen experiments 🤷🏻‍♂️ Moyes polarising the fanbase ⚒️ LOADS MORE! 245. "You should've signed for a big club!"

If ever there was a four-day period that summed up West Ham perfectly, it was the one we've just had. We comfortably thrashed quadruple winners-elect, Arsenal, on Wednesday night with a thoroughly enjoyable 3-1 victory at London Stadium, knocking them out of the Carabao Cup and preventing Declan "I want to win it all" Rice from 'winning it all.' We then followed that up with a 3-2 defeat at Brentford where, despite going into the break 2-1 up, suffered from having a striker on the pitch who just struggles to score goals. Michail Antonio's decision to stick a toe out instead of allowing Said Benrahma to tap in from two yards essentially cost us at least a point at Brentford, which is hugely frustrating given the win over Arsenal had appeared to have gotten us back on track after a poor run of results. But that's just West Ham for you, isn't it!? Also this week, we welcome back Ari from the Gate 7 International podcast ahead of Thursday night's big Europa League clash with Olympiacos in Stratford. We then wrap up with the Betway Charity Bets, where we've FINALLY won a bet for charity before some final thoughts from the lads for another week. LOADS to get through this week. Opposition View: Brentford, with Mike from the Ealing Road Podcast

It's a funny ol' game, isn't it? Just days after losing at home to a struggling Everton side, West Ham go on to thrash Arsenal at home in the Carabao Cup to bring some positivity back to east London after a torrid run of three defeats in a row. Now we travel to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. We've lost all four of our previous top-flight meetings with the Bees and have scored just one goal, although we did beat them on their own patch in the FA Cup last season. Joining us this week to preview the game us Mike from the Ealing Road Podcast! Note: This podcast was recorded BEFORE West Ham's 3-1 cup victory over Arsenal. 244. Th-INGS can't get much worse after seven hellish days for West Ham

The thrashing by Aston Villa felt like one of those days when you just had to brush it off as a bad day at the office, but having followed that result up with back-to-back defeats to Olympiacos and Everton, all the positivity from a solid start to the season has been well and truly dampened. The team selection in Athens had many fans scratching their heads and the performance that followed led to heads in hands, while the starting XI to face Everton was arguably the one everyone has been calling for since the beginning of the season, only for the performance to be just as bad as the one just a few days earlier in Greece. Where do we go from here? How does David Moyes turn it around? It's a huge week for him and the club as we prepare to welcome Arsenal to London Stadium in the Carabao Cup before travelling to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday. If we lose both of those as well, is Moyes' job under serious threat? You will have to forgive us both for the dull nature of this episode, but we do have friend of the show and huge Arsenal fan Dan Cutts dialling in from New York to discuss Wednesday's London Derby in Stratford to help lighten the mood, even if that does come via some very smug Arsenal chat. Opposition View: LIVE FROM ATHENS! - Olympiacos, with Kostas from Gate 7 International Podcast

West Ham take on Olympiacos in Athens tonight knowing that a win will put us within touching distance of making it three European group stage wins in as many years. We had labelled Freiburg away as arguably our toughest fixture of the group stage this season but we made relatively light work of that one. Tonight, in Athens, will also be a test but we definitely have enough about us to take all three points back to east London with us. Will speaks to Kostas from the Gate 7 International Podcast, who gives us the full lowdown on Olympiacos and his views on how this game will be won and lost. BONUS: Are West Ham fans in Athens in danger of violence from Olympiakos ultras?

West Ham face Olympiakos in Athens on Thursday night in our third Europa League Group A fixture, where a win would put us firmly in control and within touching distance of winning a European group for the third consecutive season. But against the backdrop of what is sure to be a great game and a memorable experience for those going, is the ongoing threat of violence from Olympiakos' ultras. They made headlines at the weekend when clashes with rival fans of Panathinaikos caused their derby match to be abandoned. That begs the question, are West Ham fans safe in Athens right now? Joining Will this week to discuss that in more detail, as well as look ahead to the game itself, is Ari from the Gate 7 International Podcast. This is a BONUS Opposition View, with another one LIVE from Athens due tomorrow ahead of the game. 243. A day trip to Birmingham, led by Michail Antonio

We don't get thrashed very often, not since David Moyes returned to the club almost four years ago. In fact, we've only lost by 3+ goals and conceded 4+ six times in 190 matches. That's pretty good going. Sunday's thrashing at the hands of Villa was fully deserved, too. They were better than us, hungrier than us and more clinical than us. No complaints from us, other than the fact there were several poor performances throughout the team, not least Michail Antonio who looked like he was just there for a day out in Birmingham. Every team has a bad day at the office every once in a while, but good teams are defined by how they recover from them. We've got a big week with a trip to Olympiakos in the Europa League on Thursday night before the visit of Everton in the Premier League on Sunday. If we win both of those, we can write Villa off as a blip. If we don't, will there be cause for concern? Also on this week's show, the Claret & Blue View returns and it's The Sun's Sport Head of Content and massive West Ham fan, Mike Anstead, joining us this week to talk about his love for the club and his thoughts on the season so far. We also discuss our Betway charity bets, as we STILL wait for our first win of the season, before wrapping up for another week. Our two Opposition Views with Olympiakos and Everton fans will be out separately later this week. 242. No time for pumpkin picking as West Ham prepare for Villa

Now that the international break is over, James and Will are back ahead of Sunday's hugely anticipated trip to Villa Park. With both sides having ambitions of finishing in the top-seven this season, this is going to be a huge test and will give us some indication of what we might be able to achieve this term. Avoiding defeat away from home, especially at Villa Park, will be a good result, but all three will send a huge message to the other clubs who have the same ambitions as we do. Given the break, this is a shorter episode than normal but we did manage to fill some of the time discussing pumpkin picking and Thorpe Park, before Will put James on the spot once again with an invite to his birthday party next month. Also this week, we're joined by friend of the show, huge Villa fan and BBC journalist, Tim Warwood, who entertains us once more with his views on Villa, while he also introduces us to more of his family members! 241. A well deserved point v. PGMOL as VAR continues to make football worse

Fans were told VAR would make football better but instead, it appears to be doing its very best to make it worse with every passing game. It was our turn (again!) last weekend to suffer from inept and not-for-purpose officiating, that could've been cleaned up by the use of VAR, but they're still hellbent on only helping sub-standard referees in only very specific incidents in the game. That cost us against Newcastle, in what was a very good performance that warranted all three points, let alone a draw. James and Will discuss all of that this week, as well as look a bit further back to the victory over Freiburg in the Europa League, which sees us top Group A and cement ourselves as favourites to qualify as winners. Also this week, James' mate, very opinionated West Ham fan and bondholder, Steve Hart, is the Claret & Blue View guest as he discusses his experience in Prague, love for West Ham, deep hatred towards Arsenal and what he thinks it means to be West Ham. This interview is well worth the listen for the Declan Rice-Arsenal rant alone, to be honest! It's an international break now, so no Opposition View or Betway Charity bets, but we'll be back again next week as we look ahead to the trip to Villa Park. Opposition View: Newcastle United, with Toby Gannon from The Sun

After a strong performance in the 2-1 win over SC Freiburg on Thursday night, a much different and harder test awaits us at London Stadium on Sunday. Newcastle have become a force to be reckoned with since their takeover and have followed up their break into the top four last season with an unbelievable return to Champions League football this term, drawing 0-0 with AC Milan at San Siro before thrashing PSG 4-1 at St. James' Park earlier this week. We knew they would prove to be a difficult test for us, but given their recent results, including the 8-0 annihilation of Sheffield United, it's clearly going to be even harder than we'd imagined! Joining us this week to preview the game is The Sun's Sports News Editor and huge Magpies fan, Toby Gannon, who gives us the full lowdown on his beloved Newcastle and explains just how crazy it is to be a fan of his club right now after going from perennial underperformers to the richest club in world football. 240. Routine victories, new-era West Ham and the inevitable Declan Rice Derby

As routine victories go, you don't get much more routine than the 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday. It was one of the most comfortable three points we've had in some time, but there were still 'some' question marks around David Moyes' initial approach to the game, with his starting XI raising some eyebrows, especially James'. It came just a few days after a far less routine victory against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup, which was swiftly followed up by the inevitable fourth-round draw at home to Arsenal, which is now being labelled the Declan Rice Derby for obvious reasons. Also on this week's show, Heineken's Global Brand PR Lead and huge West Ham fan, Joey Brophy, joins Will for the Claret & Blue View, while Alex from Spodcast Freiburg gives us the full lowdown on SC Freiburg ahead of our Europa League clash on Thursday night. We round things off, as always, with a look at our Betway Charity Bets before some final thoughts from the lads. It's another cracking show this week, including a tale of James getting uncharacteristically drunk on Saturday night. You don't want to miss it! After losing two on the bounce in the Premier League, many will be looking at a home game against newly-promoted Sheffield United as the perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways and continue our bid for a third top-seven finish in four seasons. Claret & Blue View: Jay's Dad from The Inbetweeners! - David Schaal, top actor and huge West Ham fan

If you're a fan of TV shows such as The Office, The Inbetweeners, Ashes to Ashes, Eastenders and The Bill, then you'll know all about this week's Claret & Blue View guest - it's David Schaal! Schaal is more commonly known as Jay's Dad from The Inbetweeners. Still, he's also enjoyed an esteemed acting career, playing roles in the aforementioned shows as well as on the big screen, in movies such as The Inbetweeners movies and Kidulthood among many, many others. He's also a huge West Ham fan and actually joined us on a few away days on our run to the Europa League semi-finals two seasons ago, meeting up with James and Will in the likes of Seville and Lyon. On this week's Claret & Blue View, Schaal shares his love for West Ham, a brief history of his story, discusses current affairs surrounding the club and gives us an insight into when we can expect to see him on our screens again. 239. A passionate defence followed by flakey defending

3-1 seems to be the trending scoreline these days, with our 4th and 5th 3-1 scorelines of the season coming in the past week. First, it was a win over Backa Topola in the Europa League before losing by the same scoreline at Anfield against Liverpool on Sunday. There's LOADS to unpack in this week's pod, with reaction to those two games before a sneak preview of this week's Claret & Blue View with David Schaal, more commonly known as Jay's Dad from The Inbetweeners. That episode will be released separately later this week. We also look ahead to our Carabao Cup third-round trip to Lincoln City with a chat with Charlie Beeston from The Stacey West, before picking our Betway Charity Bets for Saturday's visit of Sheffield United. There's LOADS going on this week's episode, with plenty of content to follow throughout the week! If you love what we do then PLEASE leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 238. It's just not Cricket, as everyone shrugs their shoulders

There's absolutely no shame in losing to this Man City side, so there's absolutely no negativity in this podcast from us. If anything, there were so many positives to take from the defeat and if we had managed to hold out and take something from the game then no one would've been able to complain. It was a good performance but ultimately we were beaten by one of the best teams in world football, if not the best team on the planet right now. No shame in that! Also this week, former member of the podcast, Reece Bayliss, joins Will for the Claret & Blue View, Will attempts to preview Thursday night's Europa League clash with Backa Topola and we pick our Betway Charity Bets for Sunday's trip to Liverpool. In this video, we discuss... 🧤 Areola justifying decision to drop Fabianski 🎯 JWP on target AGAIN! 🇨🇿 Coufal's performance against Doku 🫂 Paqueta hugging Guardiola 🤔 Gulf in quality between Man City and rest of the PL 😍 Paolo Di Canio's return 🇷🇸 Backa Topola Preview 💷 Betway Charity Bets ⚒️ LOADS MORE! Opposition View: Manchester City, with Ste Tudor from the 93:20 Podcast

It's a clash of the Champions of Europe, the unbeaten, title challengers and good friends. Saturday's visit of Man City represents many things, and it could see either West Ham go top of the league or Man City make it five wins from five at the start of the season. Joining us this week is big friend of the show, Ste Tudor, from the 93:20 Podcast, to give us everything we need to know about City ahead of Saturday's 3pm kick-off in Stratford. 237. A lack of cultural interest ahead of Man City visit

With the international break almost behind us, we can once again look ahead to our next fixture. This weekend, it's Man City's turn to try and end West Ham's unbeaten start to the season. Indeed, City are also unbeaten at this point, so this is kind of like an early season clash of two very serious title hopefuls. Kind of. On this week's Claret & Blue View, broadcaster, journalist and huge West Ham fan joins us to talk about his thoughts on the club right now, while James and Will get back to selecting their Betway Charity Bets in the hope they can secure a first win of the season for their chosen charities. And finally this week, with very little proper football to discuss, the lads discuss their cultural differences, with Will very clearly astounded at James' lack of cultural interests. It doesn't sound like much of an engaging listen this week, but it absolutely is. You'll just have to take our word for it. Reminder: The Opposition View, with Ste Tudor from the 93:20 Podcast, will be published separately later this week. 236. A Greek adventure awaits as Luton are left in ruins

This is all a bit fun, isn't it? It's our best start to a Premier League season for over 20 years and when you consider three of our opening four games of the season have been away from home, it's even more impressive that we're unbeaten and sitting nicely in the top four of the Premier League going into the first international break. Whatsmore, we've finally learned our opponents for this season's Europa League and it's certainly an exciting one. In Group A, we face Olympiacos, SC Freiburg and Serbian outfit Backa Topola. It's arguably the toughest group we've been dealt over the last three seasons but we definitely have enough about us to progress to the knockout stages. The worst-case scenario is we come third, drop into the Conference League and just go and win that again! Also on this week's show, we... Discuss Friday night's win at Luton Mull over the Europa League draw Debate the merits of Said Benrahma's inclusion in the starting XI for the rest of the season Rate our summer transfer window (and moan about the lack of striker investment) Rave about our start to the season LOADS MORE! It's now the international break but we'll be back again next week ahead of the visit of our title rivals Manchester City. Opposition View: Luton Town, with huge Hatters fan Steve Blackwell

Despite the impressive start to the season, a trip to newly promoted Luton Town is by no means a formality for West Ham. It's Luton's first Premier League game at Kenilworth Road after having to play their opening two games of the season away from home due to improvements being made to the ground, meaning the atmosphere is likely to be bouncing under the lights on Friday night. We know all too well what an atmosphere like that can do to the occasion, don't we? Last season we were Nottingham Forest's first opponents at the City Ground after a 23-year absence from Premier League football and there is no doubt the atmosphere that day led to a frustrating afternoon as we eventually lost 1-0, missing a penalty and having two goals disallowed by VAR in the process. But our start to the season in comparison to last season has been encouraging. Wins against Chelsea and Brighton mean we have momentum and confidence heading into this one. Luton have lost their opening two games by an aggregate scoreline of 7-1, so it's fair to say they're still finding their feet at this level, but we must not take this one for granted. Joining us this week for the very first time is huge Luton Town fan, Steve Blackwell, who has given us the full lowdown on his beloved Hatters. From style of play to season expectations to Kenilworth Road, Steve gives us a proper education in what we and the rest of the Premier League can expect from the newcomers this term. This one is well worth a listen ahead of Friday night's trip to Bedfordshire. Finally, if you love what we do then PLEASE leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 235. "Are you watching, Declan Rice!?"

WE'VE FINALLY BEATEN BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION FOOTBALL CLUB IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE! At the 13th time of asking, we've managed to finally take three points from Brighton in the top-flight. What a feeling, and what a result after a thoroughly impressive performance from the team at the AMEX. Three really well taken goals ensured we took all three points back to Stratford and went top of the Premier League! After all the negativity before the season began AND after the opening weekend draw at Bournemouth, it's crazy what a couple of big results can do for confidence amongst the fanbase. We've gone from dreading the season ahead to anticipating a really exciting season once again. Only at West Ham, eh!? On this week's show... We discuss the win at Brighton in detail, including Areola's performance, JWP's impact and the fact we don't seem to be missing Declan Rice talkSPORT's Mark Webster dials in for a chat about his beloved Hammers We talk through our Betway Charity Bets for the Brighton game before revealing our selections for the trip to Luton on Friday LOADS MORE! 234. Heads turned all over Stratford as West Ham deliver on Derby Day

No one saw that coming, did they? Our 3-1 victory over Chelsea came as a bit of a surprise, especially as it ensured both James and Will were left with egg on their faces after the full-time whistle. James has been very vocal about his lack of trust in Alphonse Areola to save penalties, but he duly delivered against the Blues. Similarly, Will has always struggled to warm to Michail Antonio and was not entirely convinced by the signing of James Ward-Prowse. A goal and two assists between them shut him up for at least another week... Also on this week's show... West Ham correspondent for The Sun, Jordan Davies, joins us to discuss the Chelsea victory and what we can expect from the remainder of the transfer window James and Will discuss the win over Chelsea in detail We're joined by Joe Sayers from the Albion Obsessed Podcast to preview this weekend's trip to Bogey Team Brighton Another week of Betway Charity Bets LOADS MORE! 🍻 Buy us a pint: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Wearewestham 🎧 Subscribe: https://podfollow.com/we-are-west-ham-podcast 📱 Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WeAre_WestHam 👍🏻 Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wearewesthampod 📸 Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wearewesthapod 🗣️ Something to say? 233. What do two points and Lukasz Fabianski have in common? Both dropped.

A 1-1 draw to kick-off the new season wasn't entirely unexpected, but it was still hugely underwhelming just a few months after thrashing Bournemouth 4-0 on the same patch of grass and, of course, winning the Conference League. Some might see it as two points dropped, others will see it as a good point away from home. Either way, we've got a long way to go if we're to return to the standards that had is in the conversation for a top-four finish just a couple of seasons ago. Also on this week's pod, Will catches up with social media comedian and massive West Ham fan, Rob Morgan, before getting the thoughts of friend of the show and huge Chelsea podcaster, Stamford Chidge ahead of the weekend's visit of the Blues in Stratford. The lads also discuss their Betway charity bets for the weekend, as well as give their overall views on Bournemouth, Areola finally forcing his way into the number one spot in goal, the signing of James Ward-Prowse and so much more! 232. New season, same ol' (weaker) West Ham

We're back! After a summer off, in which we did do a few little bits from Down Under (including a live show in Adelaide), James and Will are back for yet another season of the We Are West Ham Podcast. This week we discuss the summer transfer window, which has been simply unacceptable from West Ham's point of view, the recent rumours and then preview Saturday's trip to Bournemouth for our first Premier League game of the new season. Also this week, the first Opposition View of the campaign comes via Graham Nickless, who covers Bournemouth for The Sun, as he gives us his view on what we should expect from the Cherries at the weekend and for the season ahead. And finally, in what is arguably the biggest news coming out of the podcast right now, the BETWAY CHARITY BETS are back, thanks to Betway agreeing to bring back our fundraising efforts in aid of the DT38 Foundation and the Bobby Moore Fund for the entirety of the 23/24 season. After a year off, we're delighted to be able to raise money for two fantastic charities once again, and that's all thanks to Betway for the generosity. To all the returning listeners of the podcast, welcome back, to the new listeners, welcome! After a month off, we're back! Will is over in Perth for West Ham's pre-season tour Down Under, while James is at home in Sunny Suffolk after a week in an even sunnier Spain, and there's SO much for us to discuss on this week's pod! Declan Rice has FINALLY finalised his move to north London where, despite saying he wanted to win it all, he almost certainly won't win it all - both James and Will make their feelings very clear about the whole saga on this episode. Over in Perth, West Ham thrashed Perth Glory 6-2 and Will was at the official fan party before the game where he caught up with Taylor Tombides, brother of Dylan and co-founder of the DT38 foundation, ex-West Ham striker Richard Garcia and a handful of Aussie fans who wanted to say hello and tell their stories behind how and why they've become massive Hammers. 229. WEST HAM ARE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS! - LIVE FROM PRAGUE

WE DID IT! West Ham United have ended their 43-year wait for major silverware and are now the proud holders of a European title following the 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in Prague on Wednesday night. It was arguably the best possible way to win a final - Jarrod Bowen's 93rd-minute goal right in front of the passionate West Ham faithful will live long in the memory of every single fan who was lucky enough to witness it. Tears. Joy. Elation. Relief. Euphoria. Every single emotion burst out of the fans, players and coaching staff on the final whistle as European glory was secured. It was the most incredible experience and achievement and one we'll never forget. West Ham United are European champions. Just let that sink in. James and Will were there and met up in the middle of Prague the day after to record this episode. And they even managed to grab a quick word with Chesney Hawkes, who just happened to be walking past while we were recording. 228. Next Stop: Prague

So this is it. The last time James and Will sit down to chat before West Ham embark on a first European final for 47 years. The next time you hear from us, we could either be Europa Conference League champions and looking ahead to another campaign of Europa League football. Or we could be entering a summer of unknown, with key players potentially looking for an exit due to defeat and a lack of continental competition for them to showcase their talents. Amongst all the excitement, anticipation and nerves, this game does represent something of a crossroads for the club. If we win it further cements our place in Europa and makes us a far more attractive proposition when it comes to summer recruitment. Lose, it there's the risk that we lose a number of key players and slip back into mid-table obscurity. The latter doesn't bear thinking about right now, because don't forget what we're currently experiencing is exactly what the club promised the fans when they forced us away from Upton Park and relocated us to Stratford. This was the deal. Move away from our spiritual home in return for a better football team regularly competing in Europe and for trophies. So losing out on the chance to compete again in Europe does come with the risk of us slipping back to a stage where the club stops holding up their side of the deal. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. Also on this week's pod, Lorenzo Lepore from the SpaceViola Fiorentina Podcast joins us to give everyone the full lowdown on what to expect against his beloved Fiorentina on Wednesday night, while James and Will mull over all the headlines in the build-up to the club's biggest game since the 2006 FA Cup final. The next time you hear from us will be later this week in Prague - we'll be doing a reaction special on Thursday. Hopefully, we'll be celebrating! 227. Smooth talking our way to the best day of our lives

So that's the Premier League season done and dusted, and a 14th-placed finish isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if we go on and win in Prague next week. West Ham's average Premier League finish is 12th, so it was a slightly below-average league campaign, but all of that becomes irrelevant if we win silverware and qualify for next season's Europa League. This week, James and Will share how their emotions are stacking up ahead of next Wednesday's final in Prague, answer questions from listeners who sent in their voice notes and consider the starting XI they'd like to see line up against Fiorentina in a weeks' time. All of that and so much more as the boys try and keep their emotions in check ahead of what could be the best day in the lives of every single West Ham supporter across the land.
