Ep 261#261 Luke Chadwick, Former Man United Player, on the Genius of Alex Ferguson, Struggles with Mental Wellness, and his Mission to Make Youth Football Fun Again

Ex-Manchester United football player Luke Chadwick played over 460 professional games for clubs such as United, West Ham, Stoke and others before retiring and beginning his coaching journey. Luke was a young boy who dreamed of running out at Old Trafford. But the reality of the pressure of being a professional and everything revolving around winning created an environment that took its toll. His own personal experiences within professional football have served to reinforce his approach to making youth football(soccer) a better experience for kids. He joined the Football Fun Factory as a director in 2019, and his goal is to ensure Football Fun Factory coaches place the emphasis on fun and enjoyment, over technical development and progression and ensure that the children develop a healthy and positive relationship with football that will last a lifetime. In our discussion today we speak about the genius of leaders such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Roy Keane, the dangerous mentality on professional sports in terms of "manning up" when it comes to mental health issues, and his transition into coaching. You will hear him light up as he discusses his passion for working with grassroots players and focusing on personal development and joy! It's a great talk. Ep 256#256 Joe Towne, Actor and Performance Coach: Developing a Winning Mindset, Working Through Adversity, Self Talk, and Learning from Failure

Joe Towne (@MeJoeTowne) is an actor, producer, writer and performance coach and mentor for numerous athletes, actors, broadcast professionals and more. His professional journey has taken him from coast to coast and across the Atlantic. He graduated with a BA in Theater from The University of Southern California and interned at 20th Century Fox. Joe then headed back east, where he pursued a career in theater and embarked on a 30-year journey that took him to the UK and back. Along the way, he studied at NYC's Stella Adler with June Stein and with Gary Austin, founder and creator of The Groundlings. Some of Joe's most acclaimed roles include an "unfailingly imaginative!" 30-minute Star Wars Trilogy recap that was featured on BBC radio and performed live for George Lucas at Skywalker Ranch, Mr. Pink in Edinburgh Fringe Fest's highly rated production of Reservoir Dogs and opposite Rebel Wilson in the New Line feature film Isn't It Romantic. We brought Joe on the podcast because athletes and those who lead them have so much to learn from people in theater, who experience way more failure than successes, who struggle with adversity and must overcome negative self talk, and so many other areas of the inner game. Joe gives us some great tools and ideas for being mentally strong and learning from our toughest moments. Sound useful for your athletes? Rob Gray (@ShakeyWaits) is a professor at Arizona State University who has been conducting research on and teaching courses related to perceptual-motor skill for over 25 years. He is also author of the incredible new book How We Learn to Move: A Revolution in the Way We Coach and Practice Sports Skills. With over 350 episodes and 2 million downloads, it has become a critical resource for individuals working in areas including coaching, talent development, training and rehabilitation. In our discussion today, Rob and John talk about the myth of the one size fits all technique, the benefits of training variability and small-sided games, why it makes no sense to gather in groups and then practice as individuals, and much more. Ep 247#247 Manchester United's Tony Whelan and Tom Statham: Our Most Important Job is Protecting Childhood

Tom Statham and Tony Whelan have a combined 60 plus years coaching and leading the young players in Manchester United's Academy. Tony started out there as a schoolboy, eventually signing professional terms and playing for Man United, Manchester City, and in the US in the old NASL. He has been at United since 1990 in a coaching capacity, Head of Academy Coaching, and currently in an advisory role. With experience working under managers from Sir Matt Busby to Sir Alex Ferguson, Tony is deeply rooted in the history and culture of United, and has guided hundreds of players from the youth ranks to the pros. Tom Statham is a long time friend of the podcast, and has been with Manchester United for nearly 30 years, currently working with the U9-U11s. Current Manchester United players such as Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay all started as young players with Tom and other coaches at the Cliff, United's legendary training ground. In our conversation today, we dive deeply into the history of the club, and the vital importance of youth coaches in protracting the childhood of our young athletes. We discuss being a life coach first, and a sport coach second. And we talk about the massive impact we can have on the lives of our young athletes on and off the field. This is a very special conversation for me, and reaffirms my belief that our influence is never neutral. Today's Podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Conference. Coach Jerome Gumbs is a former collegiate and professional basketball player and the founder of Empower Me Academy (www.empowermeacademy.net). Founded in 2013, Empower ME Academy provides a holistic training experience. Student-Athletes develop better basketball skills — and in addition, improve their attitude, commitment, and discipline. They are truly about mentorship, coaching with heart, and developing not only better basketball players, but better people. Ep 241#241 Ben Sherwood, CEO of MOJO, on the Biggest Issue in Youth Sports and the Need to Help Recreational Coaches Up Their Game

Ben Sherwood, founder and CEO of MOJO, and has coached his sons for the last 12 years in four sports. During that time, he also served as president of the Disney ABC Television Group and president of ABC News. Like many recreational coaches, he noticed that there were few if any resources to help the busy parent coach as he or she travelled from work to the practice field. So, he founded MOJO (@yougotmojo). Today we speak about the founding of the company, the need to help our recreational coaches more so than our top level coaches, and how we can make sports for children age 4-14 better. MOJO is on a mission to make youth sports more fun and magical for everyone – one kid, one coach, one family at a time. Launched in February 2021, MOJO is a robust digital platform that empowers parents who coach youth sports to bring world-class training to the largest pool of players in the world – kids aged 13 and under. Winner of the Webby Award for Best Sports App of 2021, MOJO believes that youth sports has the power to transform lives, not just for the kids on the field but the coaches and parents on the sidelines. MOJO is committed to equity, inclusion and helping to level the playing field for kids everywhere. For more information, visit www.mojo.sport. Matthias Lochmann is a sport scientist in the field of training and coaching, a sports physician and a UEFA A licensed coach. Since 2008, he has been working as a professor at the Department of Sports Science and Sport at the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Nuremberg. There, he is the head of the Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine. His current project is the reinvention of German youth soccer through introducing Funino as the games model for 9 and under kids. Lochmann played football at SV Darmstadt 98. As a coach, he worked in various positions at the professional youth academy of FSV Mainz 05 under Jurgen Klopp. His 2018 speech to German pro license coaches on game intelligence led to his current project and has led to his worldwide travels to speak upon making youth soccer more child-centric. In our conversation today we discuss Horst Wein, Funino, game intelligence as a model for development, and why Germany is staying ahead of the crowd by reimagining their youth soccer programming. What do the Collingwood Magpies, the New Zealand All Blacks, Barcelona Football Club and the New York Yankees have in common? They're all members of author Sam Walker's list of the 16 greatest sports teams ever. It's not the talent, the coach, or the strategy that made these teams great – it was the Captain. Syd Coventry, Richie McCaw, Yogi Berra, and Carlos Puyol led these teams to eternal greatness, and what made them great captains is not what you think… Sam Walker is The Wall Street Journal's deputy editor for enterprise, the unit that directs the paper's in-depth page-one features and investigative reporting projects. A former reporter, sports columnist, and sports editor, Walker founded the Journal's prizewinning daily sports coverage in 2009. Ep 234#234 Dr. Richard Bailey: How to Turn Coaching into a True Profession (Replay)

Is the way we coach based upon the latest science, research, and best practices of how children learn? Or is it based upon how we were coached growing up? In this fantastic interview, Dr. Richard Bailey (@DrDickB), Head of Research at ICSSPE, separates fact from fiction and discusses some of the common mistakes that he sees coaches of all levels making around the world. He sheds light on what is missing in the coaching profession and the prevailing myths that cause us to approach athletic coaching in the wrong way. He talks about the need for coaching to rely on real science more than it currently does, the fallacy of coach training at the macro level, and what it would take to become a more professional field. He also digs into his research about the dangers of overpraised athletes and the big difference between leaning and training. Hint: it is not about drilling skills, it is about presenting problems. Tune in to hear this smart, humorous, and hard hitting conversation with one of sport's foremost experts. Bio Richard Bailey, the Head of Research at the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education, is a former teacher in Primary and Secondary Schools, teacher trainer, coach and coach educator. He has been a full Professor at Canterbury, Roehampton, Birmingham and Liverpool in the UK and has directed studies that have influenced policy and practice both nationally and internationally. In addition to his position as Writer in Residence at the ICSSPE Executive Office he is an author and blogger. Richard has undertaken funded research in every continent of the world. He has worked with UNESCO as Expert Adviser for Physical Education, the World Health Organization, the European Union, and many similar agencies. He has carried out research on behalf of the English and Scottish governments, numerous educational and sports agencies. He was a contributing consultant for both Nike-led Designed to Move and Active Kids Do Better initiatives, and has directed numerous scientific reviews, including the most comprehensive review ever published on the benefits of physical education and sport (BERA, 2007‐2008), the UK's independent review of player development in sport (sportscoach, 2008‐2009), and the IOC-funded study of the contribution made by Sport in Education (IOC, 2004). Ep 232#232 Wes Brown: Manchester United's 2x Champions League and 5x EPL Winner on his Journey from Pickup Games to the Pros

When we talk about being a champion, not too many people in professional sport can claim to understand what it takes to get to the top of the game like Wes Brown. Brown loved taekwondo and playing pickup games in the park as a kid, and didn't join his first soccer team until the age of 10. But from there he blossomed, joining Manchester United at age 12, turning pro at age 16, and eventually winning 2 Champions League titles (1999, 2008) 5 English Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and making the PFA team of the year in 2000-2001. He eventually played over 300 EPL games for Manchester United and Sunderland before finishing his career with a stint with Blackburn and in India. In our discussion today, Wes talks about the influence of role models in close proximity (we spoke about this with Rasmus Ankersen a few weeks back), as players such as Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Davis Beckham, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo all influenced his journey as a player. We speak about playing with Ronaldo, and marking Lionel Messi. We touch on his boyhood sport experiences, as well as the massive impact legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson had on him and so many players. Finally, we talk about pressure and Simone Biles, and get Wes's take on the inner game and what it takes to perform in front of millions, even billions of people, on the world's biggest sporting stage. Ep 231#231 Jerry Lynch on his new book The Competitive Buddha: How to Up Your Game in Sports, Leadership and Life

This week I have the pleasure of interviewing my podcast co-host Dr. Jerry Lynch as he releases his 14th book The Competitive Buddha: How to Up Your Game in Sports, Leadership and Life. When Jerry first told me about this book about a year ago I was so curious about the title and how he would weave the principles of Buddhism with leadership, culture building and competitive sport. He did it ever so well, so good in fact that Steve Kerr signed on to write the forward. In our chat today, we discuss the origin of the title, the Mamba Mentality and Buddhism, selflessness, servant leadership, mastery, and so much more. You all know Jerry always brings the high energy and amazing insight, and our chat this week does not disappoint. You can learn more about Jerry's work and all his other books at www.WayofChampions.com. Ep 230#230 Martin Rooney: The 3 B's of Building a Great Team Culture

We are so excited to welcome back Martin Rooney (@MartinRooney1) to the show to talk about his brand new book High Ten: An Inspiring Story About Building a Great Team Culture. Martin is a good friend of the show, last joining us on episode 157. He is one of the most highly respected coaches out there working today. He has been a speed coach for the NY Giants and Jets of the NFL, and trained UFC fighters, Olympians, Navy Seals and Army Rangers. He has also built an amazing business Training for Warriors, and speaks all over the world through www.CoachingGreatness.com. His new book is the follow up to the hugely successful Coach to Coach, except this time we fast forward a few decades and catch the two main character in vastly different phases of life, but still coaching and learning from each other. In our talk today we discuss the 3 B's of a great culture (Beings, Beliefs and Behaviors), we talk about the five culture killers, and one of my personal favorites, how to avoid the "culture vultures." Get ready to take some notes and enjoy two friends talking about a topic they are both passionate about. Ep 229#229 Rasmus Ankersen: How to Find and Develop the Talent that Whispers

Rasmus Ankersen (@RasmusAnkersen) is an internationally known author, speaker, and film producer and one of the worlds leading experts on talent identification and development. He is also the co-director of football for Brentford FC of the English Premier League and Chairman of Champions League club FC Midtjylland of the Danish Super League. His 2012 book The Goldmine Effect is an incredible read and was one of the books that inspired me at the beginning of my Changing the Game Project journey, so to say that I am thrilled to have Rasmus on is an understatement. His new project is a film called "The Hockey Miracle in the Middle of Nowhere," the true story of how the small town of Herning, Denmark (pop. 50,000) sent five players to the NHL in a ten year period. No Danish player had ever made the NHL before! In that same period, the US cities of Chicago and Detroit, hockey hotbeds, each sent less than 5 players to the top of the ice hockey world. How did they do it? In our talk today, Rasmus and I break down the major principles outlined in the film and speak about how you might apply these same ideas in your own community so you don't just ID the talent that shouts, but you can identify and patiently develop the talent that whispers! Please connect with Rasmus at www.RasmusAnkersen.com and grab yourself a copy of The Goldmine Effect.
