Matthew Kaiser is a graduate of Villanova University School of Law and an emerging force in the sports law world. Dr. Troy Urdahl has spent his professional career at St. Anthony Village High School (SAVHS), a Twin Cities, Minn. public school. For the past 16 years Urdahl has been the SAVHS Huskies head baseball coach. In addition to his head coaching responsibilities, Urdahl has been a social studies teacher, middle school volleyball coach, and is the athletics and activities director for the St. Anthony – New Brighton School District. Troy later added a Master's degree in athletic administration from the University of St. Thomas and his Ed.D. from Bethel University where he researched high school athletes' best and worst experiences in interscholastic sports. During his coaching tenure, Urdahl has been named the Section Coach of the Year six times and the State Class AA Coach of the Year twice. In this time, the Huskies have been section champions five times and won two Class AA state titles. Urdahl has also been a volunteer VFW baseball coach for ten years, earning the 2006 state championship. In 2008, Urdahl was named to the Litchfield Baseball Association's Hall of Fame. His new book is called Chasing Influence, and it is a fictional account of a legendary baseball coach and his influence on his community, former players and their families. Major General Scott Clancy served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a tactical helicopter pilot. In this replay of a brilliant episode from year 2 of the podcast, we welcome Dr. Stephen Norris to the show. Norris was the Director of Sport Physiology & Strategic Planning at the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary for the three Winter Olympic cycles (2002, 2006 and 2010), focusing on Canada's winter sport teams. He acted as the central performance consultant for the Own The Podium initiative leading up to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. He has worked with Hockey Canada for the past 20 years, most notably with the National Women's Team program for 15 of those years. He has also worked extensively with the PGA on their youth development initiatives. In addition, Norris is a member of the Sport Physiology Group/Altitude Research Group, headed by David Smith, within the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Calgary. He is a recognized authority on long-term athlete development and talent nurturing systems. Most recently, Norris was appointed adjunct professor (applied physiology) at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alta., after being an adjunct assistant professor (applied physiology) at the University of Calgary for the past decade. He has been on the Board of Directors for Swimming Canada, Cross Country Canada/Ski du Fond Canada and Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton, and is also a strong advocate for sport and recreation both locally and nationally. Kelly Amonte-Hiller is one of the most decorated athletes and coaches we have had on this podcast. Christina Murillo (@xtinamurillo10) is a former Mexican international soccer player. She earned 29 caps with Mexico and took her senior year off from the University of Michigan to play in the 2015 Women's World Cup. Becky Burleigh began her college soccer coaching career at the ripe old age of 21, coaching Berry College to two NAIA National Championships before moving onto the University of Florida. In her nearly three decades at Florida, she won the 1998 NCAA Championship, a combined 26 SEC regular season and tournament championships, and over 500 games. Jenny Levy has led UNC Women's lacrosse to 3 NCAA Championships, 13 NCAA Final Fours and over 400 wins. Sandy Barbour is one of the most influental womens in sports. Upon her retirement in 2022 as Athletic Director and VP of Intercollegiate Athletics from Penn State University, she had been named one of five finalists for the Sports Business Journal's prestigious Athletic Director of the Year for the third time in her career and second time at Penn State (2009 and 2018). She served as AD at Penn St for 8 years, and prior to that for 10 years at University of California-Berkeley. In 2017, she was selected for the prestigious National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Under Armour AD of the Year Award for directing Penn State to nine conference championships and one NCAA title at the time. In 2020, she was among the honorees of Sports Illustrated's list of the most powerful, influential and outstanding women in sports. In addition, Forbes named Barbour one of the top 25 most powerful people in college sports in 2015 and one of the most influential women in sports in 2018 — the highest ranked athletic director on the list. Barbour graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Wake Forest University, where she served as captain of the field hockey team and played two varsity seasons of women's basketball. She also holds a master's degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. Dr. Alan Goldberg received his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is a former #1 singles player for the UMass Minuteman tennis team and twice Conference Champion. His background also includes 22 years of professional tennis coaching experience and a first-degree black belt in Shurin Ryu karate. he has early four decades of experience working with individuals and teams seeking peak performance. He has created over 35 mental toughness training programs and books for athletes, coaches, and parents on peak performance and mental toughness. He trains athletes' minds, teaching practical skills that can be immediately used in their sports. He also writes on the subject of peak performance and overcoming blocks for a number of national publications. Dave Dickerson is the head men's basketball coach at the University of South Carolina-Upstate. A former player at the University of Maryland, he has been an assistant coach at numerous schools including Maryland, Ohio State, Tulane and others. His teams have won an NCAA title, (2002) and reached multiple Final Fours. In his five years as head coach at USC Upstate, he has done extraordinary work in trying circumstances, including the death of his wife during the 2021-2022 season. Dr. Jeremy Alland (@JeremyAllandMD) is a sports medicine physician at Midwest Orthopaedics at RUSH, a renowned, consistently top-10 nationally-ranked orthopedic practice in Chicago, IL. We did a little something different this week and invited the entire coaching staff for the 2022 NCAA Champion UCLA Women's Soccer team. Craig Parnham is the current High Performance Director fo USA Field Hockey, and former Head Coach for the US Women's National Team. Sherri Coale was one of the most accomplished and impactful head coaches in University of Oklahoma history in any sport, is retiring after a transformative 25 years at the helm of the OU women's basketball program. Coale retiring after 25 years, more than 500 wins, 3 Final Fours, 9 Sweet 16s and 10 conference championships. Owner of the most wins in OU women's basketball history and a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, Coale was a four-time Big 12 Coach of the Year and directed the Sooners to 10 Big 12 championships (six regular season, four tournament) and 20 postseason appearances, including 19 consecutive NCAA Tournaments. She finished her collegiate career with a 513-294 (.636) overall record and a 253-167 (.601) mark in Big 12 play. Nine of her squads that qualified for the NCAA Tournament advanced to the Sweet 16 or beyond. Three of them barreled their way to the Final Four (2002, 2009, 2010), with the 2001-02 Sooners advancing to the national championship game. All told, her teams registered 31 NCAA Tournament wins, good for 15th most among Division I women's basketball coaches. Her three Final Four appearances are tied for eighth most in history. Her new book about her journey in sports and life is called Rooted to Rise. a collection of essays about people—some have achieved extraordinary worldly success, and some have led what society might label "ordinary lives." But the stories are far less about what her people have done and far more about who they are, or were, or always will be through the impact they had on those around them. Ken O'Keefe served as head coach at Allegheny College for eight seasons (1990-97), where his team won five North Coast Athletic Conference titles and the 1990 NCAA Division III national title. O'Keefe led Allegheny to four undefeated regular seasons (1990, 1991, 1994 and 1996), and six NCAA playoff appearances. He was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1990. From 1999-2011 he was the offensive coordinator for the Iowa Hawkeyes, leading the team to top offensive production and multiple bowl games, He then left and served on the coaching staff of the NFL's Miami Dolphins for five seasons before returning to Iowa as QB coach from 2017-2022. Nate Boyer (@NateBoyer37) is a renaissance man. He is a former Green Beret, and played football for the Seattle Seahawks and the university of Texas despite having never played high school football! He currently works as a film producer and leadership consultant, as well as runs his not profit MVP: Merging Vets and Players (www.vetsandplayers.org)Boyer gained national attention in 2016 when a letter he wrote to the Army Times about Colin Kaepernick's protests during the national anthem led to a meeting between the men and thrust Boyer into the national spotlight. A five-year player for the Texas Longhorns, Boyer served as the No. 1 long snapper on PAT/FG's his last three seasons and also handled punt-snapping duties during 2013-14. He played in 39 career games. In 2012 Boyer received the Disney Spirit Award at the ESPN College Football Awards, which is given to the most inspirational figure in college football. In 2013 the National Football Foundation awarded him with the coveted Legacy Award. He was named to the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which recognizes players whose charitable involvement and community service contributions stand out among all other student-athletes; was a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 choice (2012-14); and was first-team Capitol One Academic All-American in 2013. Boyer was named 2012-13 Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year and in 2012 became the first-ever recipient of the Armed Forces Merit Award presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). Hugh McCutcheon is a native of New Zealand, where he was national team volleyball player. He played on the New Zealand junior and senior national teams from 1988 to 1990 before coming to the US. He soon began an illustrious coaching career, leading the US Men's National Team to Olympic Gold in 2008 in Beijing, and the US Women's National team to silver at the 2012 London Olympics. He then became the head coach for the women's volleyball team at the University of Minnesota from 2012–2022, leading the team to numerous NCAA tournaments and building them into a national powerhouse. After announcing his resignation from the volleyball team at the conclusion of the 2022 season, in January 2023, McCutcheon became the assistant athletics director/sport development coach at Minnesota. McCutcheon has just published a brand new book Championship Behaviors: A Model for Competitive Sports Excellence which is the major topic of our discussion today. This week John shares his thoughts after two weeks on the road visiting college teams and conducting some parent and coach workshops on some topics that have come up a lot recently. Quite a few coaches have asked about parent engagement and how to work with those parents who just don't get it, and John shares his ideas around building trust, and making deposits in the trust bank so you can make withdrawals at a later date when you do screw up, or have to be a bit more demanding. He discusses his thoughts on communication, some tools to get parents, athletes and coaches more aligned, and then the concept of accountability being a two way street, something that takes great courage, and also something that should not be viewed as a negative. Quin Snyder is the former Head Coach of the Utah Jazz of the NBA, stepping aside in June 2022 after eight very successful seasons. Previously he was head coach at Missouri, as well as numerous assistant coaching stints across the NBA, college basketball, and even CSKA Moscow in Russia. Snyder played collegiately under Coach K at Duke University, and was named an Academic All American as a senior. He has an undergrad degree in philosophy, a law degree, and an MBA, making Snyder one of the most interesting coaches Jerry and I have ever had the pleasure of interviewing.
