Acacia Walker-Weinstein joins us this week on the Way of Champions, continuing our October run of champion coaches. Walker is the Head Women's Lacrosse coach at Boston College, the 2024 NCAA Champions. As either a player or coach, Walker has participated in 20 of the last 21 NCAA Tournaments and was a part of Northwestern's three consecutive NCAA titles from 2006-08 as an assistant coach. Since becoming head coach in 2012, she has led BC to 7 final fours, national titles in '24 and '21, three ACC regular-season titles and two ACC championships. She has coached three Terwaaraton Award winners, 35 All Americans and is a 2x IWLCA National Coach of the Year. In the world of swimming, you would be hard pressed to find a coach whose resume matches that of American Swim Coaches Association Hall of Famer Frank Busch. As a collegiate coach at The University of Arizona, his teams won 2 NCAA Championships and his swimmers won a combined 80 individual and relay national championships. He was a 6x NCAA coach of the year and 11x Pac 12 coach of the year. He retired from Arizona in 2011 and became an assistant coach for Team USA for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, and then National Team Director for the 2012 and 2016 games. During those two games, his swimmers won 64 medals, including 33 golds, as he oversaw swimmers such as Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky. Frank and John met at a swimming conference in Mexico City in Fall 2024 and had so many great conversations that they decided to record their thoughts on leadership, the importance of team dynamics in individual sports, the importance of team values, being a truth teller, and developing people and not simply athletes. Roy Williams served as the men's head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels for 18 seasons and the Kansas Jayhawks for 15 seasons. With a total of 903 wins, Williams took his teams to nine Final Fours in his careers at Kansas and North Carolina and won 3 NCAA Championships at UNC. Williams is the fifth NCAA Men's Division I head coach to reach 900 wins, and reached the mark in fewer games than any other head coach with 900+ wins. He is the only coach in NCAA history to have led two different programs to at least four Final Fours each, and the only basketball coach in NCAA history to have 400 or more victories at two NCAA Division I schools. He is also 14th all-time in the NCAA in win percentage among men's college basketball coaches. He was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. Williams started his college coaching career at North Carolina as an assistant coach for Dean Smith in 1978. Four years later, North Carolina won the national championship. After ten years as Smith's assistant, Williams became head coach at defending national champion Kansas, in 1988, taking them to 14 consecutive NCAA tournaments, four Final Four appearances, two national championship game appearances, collecting an .805 winning percentage, and winning nine conference titles. In 2003, Williams left Kansas to return to his alma mater North Carolina, replacing Matt Doherty as head coach of the Tar Heels. In an 18-year period at North Carolina, Williams won three national championships, reached a total of five Final Fours, finished first in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season standings nine times, won three ACC tournament championships, one AP National Coach of the Year award, and two ACC Coach of the Year awards. In this excellent conversation from 2021, we are joined by Rasmus Ankersen (@RasmusAnkersen), an internationally known author, speaker, and film producer and one of the worlds leading experts on talent identification and development. Neill Collins is a former professional soccer player, with nearly 600 appearances across clubs such as Sunderland, Leeds, Wolves, Sheffield United, and the Tampa Bay Rowdies. As a player he won promotion to the English Premier League with both Wolves and Sunderland, and played under managers such as Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy. In 2018 he became head coach of the Rowdies, and during his tenure reached two USL Championship Final games and was named USL Championship coach of the year. In 2023 he left to manage Barnsley in League One, and was in a 5th place promotion playoff spot when he was fired in April 2024 with one game to play. In our wide ranging conversation today, we discuss his playing journey and the necessity of dealing with adversity and looking at difficult moments as opportunities, and how that has carried into his coaching career. We discuss how to win in the locker room, first, how important it is to connect not just with your top players but those who do not play much, and how to have difficult yet truthful conversations. Tara VanDerveer was the head women's basketball coach at Stanford University from 1985 until her retirement in 2024. VanDerveer was a 10 time Pac-12 Coach of the Year and the 1990 National Coach of the year, and led the Stanford Cardinal to three NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championships: in 1990, 1992 and 2021. She took a leave of absence in 1996 to coach the US Olympic Team to gold in the Atlanta Games, and was indicted to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. In January 2024, she won her 1203rd game and passed legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzweski to become the all time winningest NCAA basketball coach for both men and women. Jeff Jones (@jonseyjeff1) has spent the past four years as the Arkansas St. Red Wolves' Assistant Athletics Director for Athletics Performance. He has 19 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, including prior stops working with football at Arkansas State, Boise State, Auburn and Appalachian State. Margaret Domka is the Executive Director for the US Center for Mental Health and Sport (@mentalhealthandsport). She is a PhD Candidate at Clemson University where her research focus is mental health and sport. Dr. Skye Arthur-Banning is an associate professor at Clemson University who has been awarded over $1 million in grants to bring mental health and sport initiatives to Veterans, individuals with paralysis, and Paralympic athletes and is a Mental Health First Aid certified instructor. Colleen Munson concluded her 19th season at the helm of Western Michigan volleyball in 2023. During her tenure at WMU, Munson has posted 10 20-win seasons, including a program-record eight in a row from 2005-12. She has taken the Broncos to the NCAA Tournament in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2023, including a berth in the Sweet 16 in 2008. Taking over a program in 2005 that had finished better than third in the MAC West just three times since 1990, Munson has led Western Michigan to six MAC West championships, including outright MAC regular season titles in 2008 and 2023, MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2023, and NCAA Tournament at-large bids in 2008 and 2011. Western Michigan had one of its best seasons in program history in 2023, as it won both the MAC Regular Season and Tournament titles on the way to a 31-3 record, its first 30-win season since 1983. The Broncos went a perfect 18-0 in the conference to become the first team to go undefeated in MAC play since 2014. Munson's squad also went unbeaten at home (14-0) and boasted its longest winning streak (21) since 1983. WMU hosted and won the Mid-American Conference Championship to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament, its fourth berth under Munson. In the first round, the Brown and Gold ousted No. 7 seed Auburn in straight sets for its third NCAA Tournament win in Munson's tenure. Becky Carlson (@tfcoachcarlson) is in her 13th year at the helm of the Quinnipiac Women's Rugby team, where she led the transition from a new varsity program into a three-time national champion. As the original head coach of the Quinnipiac women's rugby team added in 2011, Carlson boasts an all-time record of 81–33-1 including back-to-back-to-back Division I NIRA national championship titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Under Carlson's tutelage the program has been to nationals 6 out of 7 seasons and named 13 All-Americans. Carlson is a graduate of the NCAA Coaches Academy's Class #36 and the recipient of the 2015 Judy Sweet Award from the Academy. An author on issues in coaching and team culture development, Carlson's most notable piece, "An Open Letter to the Athlete We Must Stop Recruiting" is currently one of the highest viewed articles on the business and networking platform, LinkedIn. Congratulations to our friend Tara VanDerveer, the Head Coach of the Stanford Women's Basketball team, who recently became the all-time winningest coach for men and women in NCAA basketball history, surpassing former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. Coach VanDerveer is a 3-Time national champion coach, a 5 time national coach of the year, has been to 14 Final Fours, coached the 1996 US National Team at 1996 Olympics, and has been named Pac-12 Coach of the Year 17 times! A highly-respected coach and educator, Theresa "Tree" Beeckman (@tbeeckman13) is the president and founder of Tree Roots Culture Consulting and Camps LCC. She possesses more than two decades of coaching experience at a variety of levels and has built a championship pedigree with success at numerous stops. The longtime collegiate coach served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Central Michigan for five years, helping the Chippewas to the school's first-ever Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament Championship in 2011. In her tenure at CMU, she also directed the squad on an interim basis in her final campaign. Beeckman was the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at perennial NCAA Division II power Ferris State for six years before moving on to Central Michigan. While with the Bulldogs, she helped lead FSU to two NCAA Tournament appearances and six-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament bids while becoming one of the top assistant coaches in the country after helping FSU average more than 20 wins a season. Before her tenure at Ferris State, Beeckman served for four years as the head coach at Delta College and led the squad to a school-record 27 victories in 2004. Aaron Cusack is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Coaching and PE at Plymouth Marjon University in England where he program leads an MSc in High-Performance Sport Coaching. Coupled with his academic career, he is also a football coach with over 20 years of experience in coach education. Formerly a trainee youth player with Plymouth Argyle, Aaron turned his passion to coaching at 22 and spent 13 years as an academy coach working in Plymouth Argyle's Academy.
