Ep 180#180 Robert Weintraub, author of The Divine Miss Marble: A Life of Tennis, Fame, and Mystery
This week on the Way of Champions Podcast we welcome Robert Weintraub, author of The Divine Miss Marble: A Life of Tennis, Fame, and Mystery. In The Divine Miss Marble, Robert traveled the country to uncover her fascinating story. And the more he learned about her, the more her mysteries and contradictions deepened. Alice was a powerful woman who knew her worth, demanding equal pay to men decades earlier than other female athletes; yet she was held in sway by a domineering, highly successful coach with whom she had a volatile relationship. She was renowned for her California style, and had a brilliant mind and the guts to overcome a lifetime of physical trauma. For the first time here, we come closer than ever before to the truths of this unforgettable life, and somehow it's a story even more extraordinary than everything we already know about the divine Alice Marble. About Robert Weintraub Robert Weintraub lives in Decatur, Georgia, but he grew up in the large shadow cast by Yankee Stadium, in Rye, New York, and is a lifelong Yankees fan. Weintraub has written about sports for Slate, Play (the late, lamented NY Times sports magazine), ESPN.com, The Guardian, Deadspin, and many more. He is also a television producer, and has worked on programs airing on ESPN, ABC Sports, CNN International, Turner Broadcasting, Speed Channel, Discovery, and dozens of others. He has covered events large and small, from the Super Bowl, Olympic Games, and World Cup to the Dragon Boat Races in Taiwan. Weintraub has lived and worked in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Sydney, and while he loves the American South (particularly its adherence to the religion of college football), he dearly misses the ocean. When not working, Weintraub has cast aside a former life that included cage diving with Great White Sharks and scaling Uluru for one of domestic tranquility with his wife Lorie and two young children. Connect with Rob on Twitter, LinkedIn, and visit his Amazon Page for his other writing. Help Support the Podcast! Become a Podcast Champion! …and get FREE access to ALL of our online courses. Ep 176#176 Anson Dorrance, World Cup and 21x NCAA Champion Coach
This week on the Way of Champions Podcast, we replay an episode from 2018 with a 36-time NCAA Champion Sport Psychology Consultant and one of the greatest coaches of all time! This is a show you cannot miss! Dr. Jerry Lynch and Anson Dorrance join John this week to talk Dean Smith, John Wooden, Alonzo Stagg, and what it is like to build an unrivaled dynasty through love, connection, and strong character. Anson Dorrance enters his 44th year of service to the University of North Carolina soccer programs in the fall of 2017. Dorrance, a 1974 Tar Heel alumnus, debuted as the Carolina men's soccer coach in September of 1977 and then added duties as head coach and founder of the UNC women's program in September of 1979. A former U.S. Women's National Team head coach and current University of North Carolina head women's soccer coach, Anson Dorrance was named the 2016 winner of the prestigious Werner Fricker Builder Award from United States Soccer on January 29, 2016. As U.S. Soccer's highest honor, the Werner Fricker Builder Award is given to an individual or group of individuals who have dedicated at least 20 years of service to the sport, working to establish a lasting legacy in the history and structure of soccer in the United States. The award recognizes those who have developed programs that will outlast their own involvement in the sport. When Dorrance was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on August 2, 2008, it marked one more milestone moment in the career of a man whose coaching prowess became legendary at a young age. Because Dorrance has not yet retired from his coaching career, he was only eligible for election to the Hall of Fame on the "Builders of the Game" ballot, being inducted in his first year of eligibility. Like fine wine — with age — the coaching career of Anson Dorrance only gets better. It was just five years ago in 2015 when Tar Heel soccer stayed in the international news as nine University of North Carolina standouts competed in the FIFA Women's World Cup. Six former UNC players helped the U.S. win its first World Cup title since 1999, including starters Meghan Klingenberg and Tobin Heath. Tar Heel Lucy Bronze led England to its best ever World Cup finish as it gained a bronze medal. Ep 171#171 The Miraculous Story Of Austin Hatch: From 2x Plane Crash Survivor to University of Michigan Basketball
This week on the Way of Champions Podcast, we welcome Austin Hatch, a two-time plane crash survivor and inspirational speaker. Hatch's story is nothing short of Miraculous. On Labor Day of 2003, Hatch and his family were flying home from their vacation home in northern Michigan. As they were preparing to land, the aircraft crashed and burst into flames. Hatch's dad threw him out of the plane, saving his life and went back into the flames to get his mother, sister and brother, but tragically, was unable to. His mother, sister and brother did not survive. Years later, Hatch was offered a scholarship to play basketball for Michigan. Nine days later, on June 24th, 2011, Hatch's father and "second mother" were involved in a plane crash and both died on impact. Hatch suffered severe injuries and nearly lost his life. After being in a coma for two months, he had to relearn how to walk, talk, eat and basically how to live his life, once he woke up. With the help of many, many people and against the odds, Hatch persevered and was able to make a solid comeback to take the place at university that was held open for him. Hatch believes that in part, the reason he survived two plane crashes, endured tragic losses and made it through an amazing road to recovery, was to help others. He has been sharing his story of encouragement to help inspire others to work harder and get better in the years since. Ep 155#155 How to Coach Your Own Child: An Excerpt from Every Moment Matters
This week, John will be reading a chapter from his new book Every Moment Matters on "How to Coach Your Own Child." It is estimated that over 80% of coaches at one time or another coach their own child, yet this unique dynamic is never discussed in coaching education classes, and rarely mentioned by Park and Recreation and Coachign Directors when they send their army of volunteer parents out to coach every season. Yet understanding the dynamic, and some essential do's and don't, can be critical to making sure that you have a successful season when coaching your own kids. After the chapter, John interviews Tara Bilanski, a former NCAA DI women's soccer at the University of Oregon and Portland State. Tara currently lives in Bend and coaches her own 13 year old daughter, and John and Tara discuss some of their own stories from the trenches of coaching their own children. As an FYI, we do plan to turn Every Moment Matters into an audio book soon, so stay tuned for the full book. We are also exploring whether to create a small booklet for park and recreation programs to distribute to their parent coaches so that they can learn about this unique dynamic. Highlights from the podcast: How to be specific about what "hat" the parent-coach is wearing What happens when we are overly-cautious about praising our child when they are on our team How do we understand what our kid's goals are in sport? What should you say to your kid that wants to do something that you as a parent know is not a smart path? How important is it for parent coaches to understand that their kid will most likely face problems at school from other teammates? How do you "just be a parent" when on the sideline and something negative happens? Listen on, iTunes, Spotify, and Stitcher Help Support the Podcast! What happens when NBA players reach their peak at 15-years-old and why is this happening? How important is it for young athletes to compete against difficult opponents? Continuing on with the San Francisco 49ers, during his 5-year career Bo competed beside and against some of the greatest players of his generation. After his football career ended, he branched out into acting and wrote a one-man play called Runt of the Litter that had an extended off-Broadway and 50- city national run. Now in his third act, as a speaker and leadership coach, he trains some of the most successful people in the world— athletes, artists, entrepreneurs, C-suite execs—on how to communicate for maximum impact and success.
