Ep 224#224 Naomi Osaka and Athlete Mental Health: A Conversation with Dr. Jarrod Spencer
This week on the podcast we delve into an incredibly important topic, the mental health and well-being of our athletes. With the recent withdrawal of one of the world's top tennis players, Naomi Osaka, from the French Open due to depression and social anxiety, this topic has been in the news a lot recently. There have been two distinct camps; one that says you make millions of dollars so suck it up and play, and the other that recognizes that just becasue these athletes are so exceptional in one area of their life does not mean they are not struggling in others. One of the people leading that discussion recently on CNN and the BBC is our friend Dr Jarrod Spencer. Dr. Jarrod Spencer (@jarrod_spencer) is president and founder of Mind of the Athlete, LLC, a sports psychology company committed to improving the emotional health of athletes (www.MindOfTheAthlete.com). He is the author of Mind of the Athlete: Clearer Mind, Better Performance and the co-author of the book the The Sky Is NOT The Limit: Discovering the True North for Your Life's Path. Dr. Spencer serves as the sports psychologist for several professional teams and individual professionals athletes. He also works closely with NCAA teams, including teams at Princeton University, Lehigh University and University of Maryland. He maintains a private practice wherein he provides one-on-one coaching for athletes and business leaders. He has been featured in CNN, BBC, USA Today, New York Daily News and ESPN Radio. Dr. Spencer is a frequent guest on WFMZ Morning News in the NY/NJ/PA region. He also starred in the TV Show "What the Heck Were They Thinking?!" with former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Larry Holmes. Additionally, Dr. Spencer created and starred on the TV show Mind of the Athlete. He has recorded 13 CDs, as well as over 500 podcasts and videos. Dr. Spencer has extensive training and experience in the field of health and sports psychology. Before earning a Doctor of Psychology Degree from Argosy University, formerly known as The Illinois School of Professional Psychology, he earned his Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from West Chester University and his Bachelor's Degree in Psychobiology from Lafayette College. Dr. Spencer professionally trained at The Jersey Shore Medical Center, Northwestern Neuropsychological Association, and The Diamond Headache Clinic. He is a licensed psychologist in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan and Virginia. Dr. Spencer is also a member of The American Psychological Association, Pennsylvania Psychological Association, and Lehigh Valley Psychological and Counseling Association. Influenced by views in neuroscience, psychoanalysis, Christianity, and peak performance literature, Dr. Spencer has a heart to assist athletes in attaining peak performance through sound emotional health. Ep 223#223 "No excuses!' Mark Pulisic, Father of Chelsea and US Soccer Star Christian Pulisic, on Christian's Journey to the Top (Replay episode 127)
This week, in order to celebrate Christian Pulisic becoming the first American male to win the Champions League, we dig into the archives for our interview with his father Mark. Mark is a former collegiate and professional player and coach, and our talk took place soon after Christian completed his $73 million transfer to Chelsea of the English Premier League. Since then, Christian has hit some incredible heights, and experienced some devastating injuries and extreme disappointment, yet came through it all to become a Champions league winner with Chelsea one week ago. Today we speak about a variety of topics, including what it was like to raise Christian, how many times Mark and his wife Kelly said no to great opportunities, how they limited his competitive team practices to 2 sessions per week, dealing with pressure, Christian's goodbye in Dortmund, and so much more. We trace Mark's professional career and his short stint coaching in Germany and what were the major differences with coaching youth players in the US. His answer might surprise you. This is a great conversation with some terrific insight into the childhood and early sports career of one of world soccer's brightest stars. Other Highlights from the Discussion: How important is it to allow kids to develop their own passion for the sport? How do you know if your kid REALLY loves the sport? Is there a way to increase accuracy without losing creativity in children? Parents need to be able to say "No" to coaches. Does the tournament culture create "slow" players? What is missing here in the US, where and when do our kids fall behind? Ep 222#222 "You've Got to Taste the Mud!" How to Become a Better Coach with EPL and Serie A Coach Carlo Cornacchia
Carlo Cornacchia is a long time friend and coaching collaborator, and has both played and coached at the highest levels the game of soccer has to offer. He played professionally in Italy for clubs such as Napoli, Atalanta and Cagliari, and the last few years he has been a part of legendary coach Claudio Ranieri's staff at Fulham in the English Premier League, Nancy in France, and both Roma and Sampdoria in Italy. They recently wrapped up a 9th place finish in Serie A with Sampdoria, punching far above their weight and budget during the most trying of seasons. In our chat today, Carlo and John discuss how players and the game have changed from his playing days, what are the qualities of exceptional coaches such as Ranieri, how to connect with players at any level, and how young coaches transitioning from their playing days must pay their dues, and "taste the mud" as he says. What is great about Carlo is that not only has he coached internationals in front of massive crowds on the world's biggest stage, but he has also coached JV high school and youth soccer in the US, so he has an appreciation of the game at every level. Ep 220#220 Surviving and Thriving During Tryout Season with John O'Sullivan and Jerry Lynch
This past week, John has been assisting his local competitive soccer club with their annual tryouts, and like most years, tryouts are a trying time! How do you balance the "as many as possible, as long as possible" philosophy with facility shortages, lack of trained coaches, and the fact that competitive teams and leagues require different levels of commitments than some are willing to make? How do athletes prepare mentally to perform their best? How can parents support their kids during this time? How do you support the child who gets cut or moved to a new team? And how can coaches be humane and empathize with their players and parents while at the same time make the difficult decisions they are called to make? We have never covered this in depth on the podcast before, so we figured we would give it a shot this week. Please let us know what you think! In our conversation today we discuss many of the issues in sports, such as the role of women in sport governance and the importance of investing in women's grassroots and professional sports, athlete activism and using their platform for good, the effect of COVID on children and sport, and whether this pause will revert back to the fundamental inequalities that existed pre pandemic, or whether we will be able to use this time to make important changes. There is a ton of great stuff here from a woman who has been a pioneer and trailblazer as an athlete and an executive, so buckle in. Ep 213#213 How to Intentionally Create Extraordinary Moments for Your Athletes with NYT Bestselling Author Dan Heath
Every once in a while we do a flashback to an oldie but goodie from the archives, and we decided to do that this week because it was spring break here in Oregon, and I was headed out with some friends to tech free cabin up by Mt Rainier in Washington, and I realized last second I needed a book to read. So I grabbed one off the shelf that I had not read in quite a while, yet it is one I talk about at almost every single presentation I do. It is called The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath, and this book is truly required reading for coaches. Why? Everyone has these defining moments in their lives that they vividly recall. But these moments are not an accident. Science actually tells us which type of moments people are most likely to remember in any experience. Some are extraordinary and some are terrible. As coaches, we do not get to choose which moments our athletes recall, but we do get to choose the moments we create in order to ensure what we leave our athletes with are exceptionally positive moments. Dan Heath joins us on the podcast to discuss how these moments arise and how we can help create them. This episode originally aired back in November 2017, but it is so good I wanted to replay it for you this week. Bio Dan Heath is a Senior Fellow at Duke University's CASE center, which supports social entrepreneurs. At CASE, he founded the Change Academy, a program designed to boost the impact of social sector leaders. Dan is the co-author, along with his brother Chip, of three New York Times bestsellers: Decisive, Switch, and Made to Stick. Their new book, The Power of Moments, was my favorite book of 2017. Amazon.com's editors named Switch one of the Best Nonfiction Books of the Year, and it spent 47 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list. Made to Stick was named the Best Business Book of the Year and spent 24 months on the BusinessWeek bestseller list. Their books have been translated into over 30 languages. Previously, Dan worked as a researcher and case writer for Harvard Business School. In 1997, Dan co-founded an innovative publishing company called Thinkwell, which continues to produce a radically reinvented line of college textbooks. Highlights Dan's new book Power of Moments and how we are all defined by special moments "Wise Criticism" when high standards and assurance are used in feedback The tightrope of being a mentor/coach who allows players to take risks What have you failed at this week? The quest to find Peak Moments The Magic Castle – An "average" motel with Overwhelming experiences Transitions – the importance of the "first day experience" The FOUR qualities of defining moments The profound obligation of a coach to "get these moments right" The Tarantula study How do you create more moments of pride in sport? Ep 212#212 Early Specialization, Diversification, and the Battle to Provide Healthy Youth Sport Experiences with Dr. Joe Baker and Sandy Mosher
This week on the WOC Podcast we ae so excited to welcome back Joe Baker from York University in Canada, along with one of his PhD students Sandy Mosher @sandymosher. You can follow Joe at @bakerjyorku on Twitter. This was a very challenging podcast, as you all know what an advocate I am of sport sampling and Joe Baker did much of the early research in this space. Joe's research focuses on optimal human development, largely to understand how someone gets to, and stays at, the highest levels of performance. He is one of the worlds foremost experts in talent identification and skill development, and his book Developing Sport Expertise is a must have for any talent developer. He looks at various psychosocial and environmental factors influencing athletic skill development across a range of sports with a goal of building better theory/models and construct superior learning environments. Sandy Mosher is a PhD candidate studying under Joe at York, and her recent article with Joe and Jessica Fraser-Thomas entitled "Is it too early to condemn early sport specialization" has caused quite a stir as you might imagine, so I knew I had to have them on to discuss. Sandy's research in this area has found that we have potentially been making some false assumptions around early specialization, namely that if early specialization is bad, early multi-sport participation must be good. She says this is not necessarily the case as far as the evidence goes, and that there are actually many barriers to multi sport participation, and that some of the things we accuse early specialization of causing, such as injury, may be attributable to poor training more than specialization itself. Like I said, it is controversial stuff. In our talk today we speak about many of these problematic areas, such as what exactly is early and what exactly is specialization, as we actually have no definition. In other words, if we go simply by the research, we cannot say that specialization is bad, nor can we say that diversification is good. HOWEVER, what is really clear after this talk is what is really bad for our kids are youth sporting environments that take away enjoyment, autonomy, and connection, do not teach multi movement skills, and over train athletes at far too young an age. It's a fascinating talk, so I hope you are ready to listen closely to this one. Ep 211#211 "Anything that is expected must be defined!" A Conversation on What Drives Winning Teams with Brett Ledbetter
This week on the podcast we are joined by someone who knows a ton about building and sustaining championship environments. I am talking about Brett Ledbetter. Brett is a performance consultant, author and speaker. His work focuses on character development, priority alignment, behavior management and self-awareness. He's authored four books: What Drives Winning, What's Really Important, What Drives Winning Teams and What Drives Winning Environments. Brett has also given three TEDx talks: "What Drives Winning," "Building Your Inner Voice" and "How to Stop Comparing and Start Competing." He is the co-founder the "What Drives Winning" conference with hall-of-fame coach Becky Burleigh, producing five conference events with top minds in sports. Brett currently works with several Division 1 athletic departments––including Gonzaga, Oregon, Florida and Oklahoma State to name a few––that hire him as a thinking partner for athletic directors, coaches and athletes. He also applies his high-performance training within education, military, sport and business sectors. Today Brett and John cover a multitude of topics, including above the line and below the line behavior, the five pillars that drive winning environments, and the importance of coaches defining, implementing, and modeling core values for their teams. The big takeaway though our talk and his work with top coaches such as PJ Fleck, Geno Auriemma, Brad Stevens and others: anything that is expected is defined! To learn more: Visit www.WhatDrivesWinning.com to view free conference videos, get the books, enroll in the workshop or sign up to be part of the Coaching Lab, a community of coaches that meet twice per month. Ep 210#210 Why All Coaches Need Mindset Training with Lindsey Wilson of Positive Performance Training
This week we welcome back Lindsey Wilson (@lindseypositiveperform) of Positive Performance Training and host of the Inner Game Podcast. She was on with us back in Episode 112, and she is so incredible we had to have her back on. Lindsey was an amazing athlete, an All-American basketball player at Iowa State, a WNBA draft pick, a professional player for many years, and now is not only a mindset and inner game coach for some top, top teams, but her goal is also to help coaches at every level not be intimidated by helping their athletes with the mental game. As she says, she wants to move you from "Ummmm, I don't know how to be a mindset coach!" to "Okay, it's not perfect but I can do this!" This is often the biggest frustration coaches have - not being able to really reach someone that is struggling mentally. It's also the thing most coaches talk about as the most rewarding… when it goes well. But how do you actually sit down and help an athlete or a team with their mindset? Get ready to take some notes as we discuss how to overcome our fear of helping our kids with the inner game, a quick breakdown of what a session can look like, and since we all coach the inner game anyway, usually after the fact when things go south, why not learn how to be proactive about it, right? Ep 194#194 How to Support Your Athlete's Mental Health: A Fireside Chat with John and Jerry
This week John and Jerry host a fireside chat to discuss the mental health and well being of our athletes. For many kids, this month brings a close to their Fall sports season, and with many winter sports shut down (wrestling, basketball) many of our athletes may be experiencing more social isolation than ever before. We have been told by many parents that if it were not for sports this summer and fall, their son or daughter would have really been struggling. A University of Wisconsin study in May found that 65% of young athletes were experiencing anxiety symptoms, and 68% were experiencing depression. Physical activity levels have dropped 50% at the same time. The mental health and well being of our athletes has never been more at risk, and coaches and parents can make a difference. We give you specific things to look for, and specific tools to have the conversations with our kids and their parents that can make a difference. If you are a coach or parent, keep checking in with your athletes and make sure they are doing OK. Coaches, take some time to have a Zoom call or a one on one meeting with them. Keep connecting, and be aware of any alarming signs. Our children really need us now, and I am concerned about what the next few months have in store in terms of a return to lockdowns due to the spread of COVID (already happening in some countries and states). You are doing your most important work EVER right now, and likely it has very little to do with sports! The Way of Champions Podcast is brought to you by Sports Refund. Ep 187#187 Leaders Create Culture. Culture Drives Behavior. Behavior Produces Results" with Tim Kight of Focus 3
This week on the Way of Champions Podcast we welcome Leadership Expert Tim Kight. Tim founded Focus 3 in the mid-80's in Southern California, a life-long student of elite performance with the passion and drive to help organizations achieve their goals. In his college days, Tim transferred from Ohio State to UCLA while running Track. It was at UCLA that he witnessed John Wooden win his 9th and 10th national championship. An experience that instilled a great curiosity in Tim as to what distinguishes elite performers from average performers. A question he's pursued answering ever since that moment. The answer for Tim was curated through observing and documenting the mindset and behavior patterns of elite performers. What was discovered was that elite performers think and behave differently because they've adopted a system. We cover a lot of Tim's incredible material, including how leaders create culture, how to recognize a leader, and a discussion about the leadership crisis the world is facing right now. You can find time on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and at his website. Also, check out Above the Line: Lessons in Leadership and Life from a Championship Program by Urban Meyer. Ep 186#186 "Fear is the Cancer of the Athletic Soul" with Surfing Champion Lakey Peterson
This week on the Way of Champions Podcast we welcome surfing champion Lakey Peterson. Lakey won the junior nationals at 14 and qualified for the World Surf League at 16. She is an incredible role model for young athletes and share many great wisdom nuggets during our time together. We dive into the inclusiveness of the surfing community, being an intentional female role model, and overcoming fear. Highlights from the Podcast: The book Lakey brings with to every competition How to keep the balance of enjoying surfing and competing What Lakey does to focus and stay in the moment Using keywords written on her hand to stay in the right mindset The story of how Lakey got into surfing Winning the junior nationals at 14 and qualifying for the WSL at 16 Learning to get better from losing Training the mental and physical for peak performance Being an intentional role model for young girls Defining and overcoming fear The use of meditation to increase performance Building trust between coach and athlete Taking responsibility of wins and losses Financial compensation equality in the WSL You can find more about Lakey at: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LakeyPeterson/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/lakeypeterson Twitter: www.twitter.com/LakeyPeterson World Surf League Profile: https://www.worldsurfleague.com/athletes/2156/lakey-peterson Lakey Peterson grew up in California's right-point-rich playground of Santa Barbara. She learned to surf at the age of five during a year-long trip around the world with her family, but when she got back to California the unapologetic tomboy was too busy terrorizing soccer fields and tennis courts to bother much with the beach. Showing the same competitive drive that made her mother a national champion swimmer, Lakey was dominating the boys her age on the playground, as her fellow CT counterpart Conner Coffin (an old schoolmate) can attest. But by age 12 she grew tired of driving for hours to tennis tournaments, and being she'd already racked up a national surfing title, going full throttle down the surfing path seemed much more alluring. At 14, she was the first woman to pull an aerial maneuver in competition. At 16, surfing as a wildcard in her first-ever Championship Tour event, she finished runner up at the US Open of Surfing. She qualified that same year and came back to win the US Open in 2012 on her way to claiming rookie of the year. A future World Title run seemed all but certain in the eyes of pundits and fans, but she's been winless in her five seasons since 2012, finishing consistently just below a revolving list of World Title contenders. That all changed in 2018 when Lakey claimed victories on the Gold Coast and at Keramas to battle Stephanie Gilmore for the World Title. Lakey's prospects for her first Title were high, but she was eventually defeated by Alana Blanchard in Round 2 of the Beachwaver Pro Maui, ending the season in the No. 2 position. Sadly the pattern followed in 2019 when a defeat to Stephanie Gilmore in Maui yet again ended her World Title dreams. In a double-blow, her early exit also meant that she missed out on selection for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Lakey's fast-driving style and whip turns make her especially vicious in down the line pointbreaks like the ones she spent her formative years in. That explains her solid results at Snapper Rocks, Keramas and Jeffrey's Bay, the recent additions to the women's Championship Tour. Lakey's positivity, consistency, and talent mean she is a perennial threat. More importantly, she remains more determined than ever to claim her first World Title. Help Support the Podcast!
