S1 Ep 106Star Trek: Nemesis
"Can you learn to see in the dark, Captain?" - Shinzon It was a dark movie. Literally and figuratively. It ended up being the last of the Star Trek movies with the TNG cast. But was it a worthy finale?? This week, the Trek Geeks will give their take on Star Trek: Nemesis. Their memories of the 2002 film are not as positive as other feature films, and they will jump right into the reasons why this was a less than stellar big screen exit for Picard and his crew. Prime Directive violations, dark sets, "tired" acting. This list goes on and on. But fear not, there are plenty of things that the Geeks liked, and they will get into those too! Plus, perhaps the biggest announcement ever from our good friends at Star Trek Continues dropped this week! S1 Ep 105Two Guys One Trek
We listen to a lot of podcasts. One of the ones we found last year was a fast-paced and energetic show called, "Two Guys One Trek." It's the journey of two friends through TOS: one who has seen it before, and the other who had seen every Trek series BUT the original. They think that Trek is best watched with a friend and we love going on this journey with them. It's a fresh and unique perspective on the series that started it all--and it's so much fun! They've just released their entire second season where ever you download podcasts, but this week they're making a special appearance on Trek Geeks. Join us as Ira Heinichen and Josh McClenney talk about why they started this podcast and we'll find out what episodes of The Original Series surprised them. Plus, we may iron out whether Josh was trapped in a cave throughout his childhood--the only possible reason he could have gone through all his time on this planet without seeing Kirk, Spock, and company. Good times. Plus, there's some news on the Rio All-Suites Hotel for all you STLV attendees and there's finally a nationwide premiere date for the "Remembering Leonard Nimoy" documentary! It's all in Episode 105 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast! We hope you'll join us for some laughs! FIVE YEAR MISSION We can't thank FIVE YEAR MISSION enough. S1 Ep 103J.G. Hertzler
When we started the Trek Geeks Podcast two years ago, we compiled a list of names--those people we'd love to talk to on the show someday. At the top of Dan's list was J.G. Hertzler--the actor who played General/Chancellor Martok in 25 episodes Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and appeared as two other characters on that series. We are honored and humbled to welcome J.G. to the podcast this week! We'll talk to J.G. about his time on the show and ask why he thinks that DS9 is enjoying such a resurgence now. We'll also talk about what it's like to work with Avery Brooks and also about his "The Left Hand of Destiny" series of novels featuring Martok! We'll also find out who the better rapper is: J.G. or actor Robert O'Reilly who played Gowron! S1 Ep 102Regeneration
Back in 2003, Enterprise aired an episode featuring the Borg! It was a controversial move among fans. The Borg weren't introduced until season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation--and event which wouldn't happen in the timeline for another 175 years or more. Still, the episode was based on the events of First Contact, creating both a sequel and a prequel. This week, Dan and Bill dig in on this episode! We'll discuss some of Regeneration's finer points and discuss some key questions: Was this episode was a mistake? Did the crew of the NX-01 defeat the Borg a bit too easily? Does this episode work as either a sequel or a prequel? Plus, we'll announce a giveaway winner for our Brainstorm Gear and we'll tell you how you can still get in on the "Star Trek Cats" giveaway still going on in our official Facebook Group, Camp Khitomer! That, and we'll announce our affiliate partnership with CBS All Access! If you plan on subscribing to that service to see Star Trek: Discovery later this year, you can now help us out directly! There's lots to talk about in Episode 102 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast and we hope you'll join us! FIVE YEAR MISSION We can't thank FIVE YEAR MISSION enough. S1 Ep 99Still Treads the Shadow
It has been too long since the cast and crew of Star Trek Continues released Episode 7, so we have been waiting as patiently as possible for the latest adventure from our friends at STC. As Nero would say, "The wait is over!" and we are thrilled that Episode 8 of this highly acclaimed fan production is now available. Released to fans over the weekend of April 1st, "Still Treads the Shadow" continues the story first told in the TOS episode "The Tholian Web." While investigating an event horizon in an uninhabited system, the crew of the Enterprise are shocked to come across the U.S.S Defiant, thought to be lost in interspace over a year ago! The surprises don't stop there when it is revealed that the Defiant has a single passenger on board, and the condition and identity of that someone is what the crew least expected! We think you will agree that STC has once again given us an amazing episode filled with drama and awesome guest stars! Plus, as a special bonus we are joined by The Captain himself, Vic Mignogna (in a record 4th appearance on Trek Geeks), to discuss this amazing story and the INCREDIBLE performance he gives in this episode. It's all in Episode 99 of "Your Independent Star Trek Podcast" and we hope you'll join us! S1 Ep 97TNG: Our Top 10
Well, as the 30th anniversary of Star Trek the Next Generation continues to ramp up, we thought it would be fun to have another great "which is the best of the best" discussion. With 178 episodes of TNG to choose from, we figured there will be a great mix of expected episodes, and possibly a few surprises! But that's not all! Since we are doing another "ranking episode," it only makes sense to bring back is Mr. TrekRanks himself - yeah, yeah, the man who actually fired the phasers on the good ole NX-01, Mr EnterpriseExtra, Jim Moorhouse and we are thrilled he is joining us again for our TNG discussion. As with our previous TOS rankings, we have followed Jim's lead from his website and listed our episode, followed by a short 5 word description, and then an ultimate hashtag comment for each choice. S1 Ep 96Star Trek Generations
The passing of the baton. In 1994, Paramount debuted the first of the movies to feature the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It would serve as a bridge for the two generations of the franchise and do so in epic fashion! ...but did it? Joining us to talk about this seventh Star Trek film is our friend Brandon-Shea Mutala from Trek.FM! He's the host of Melodic Treks and the co-host of Warp 5--and Generations is his favorite TNG movie! Sadly, Brandon is outnumbered: Bill and Dan don't count this film among their favorites. We'll discuss the plot elements and the areas that we thought the film could have improved on, and we'll debate the personal Nexuses (Nexii??) for Kirk and Picard and whether they fit the characters. Plus, lots of Star Trek news on the DS9 Documentary and a new release of the ST:TMP soundtrack on vinyl! Enter the Nexus with us and Episode 96 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast! MAKE IT SO! S1 Ep 95See-It or Skip-It: TOS S1
Many of our listeners have made it clear that they LOVE our See-It or Skip-It episodes. We love doing them, so this week we decided to do something that may ruffle a few Tarkelian Bat feathers! We are going to give our take on Season 1 of the show that started it all: The Original Series! How could ANYONE say that an episode of TOS is a Skip-It? Well you may be surprised to see what we think. Season 1 has a huge amount of episodes, 29 in all, and we will get the breakdown of each story-line, and give you our thoughts on why it is worth watching, or one that you can vaporize with your hand phaser! To make things even more interesting, we are welcoming our good friend and Star Trek Continues Co-Producer, Kasey Shafsky to moderate the discussion! With three crazy TOS die hard fans involved in the discussion, things might get even more crazy than the Beta III Red Hour! Plus, we have some amazing updates on the Deep Space 9 documentary "What We Left Behind," a new Klingon beverage may soon be joining us on the podcast when we record, and a touching tribute to our beloved Scotty, Jimmy Doohan, who would have turned 97 this past week. So, sit back, grab your glass of Tranya and enjoy Episode 95 of Trek Geeks--Your Independent Star Trek Podcast. This week we take a look at the two-part Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "Chain of Command!" Picard is captured and tortured by the Cardassians? Riker is relieved of his duties? Troi has to wear a standard uniform? Data wears Command red? This is perhaps one of TNG's darkest episodes, and we'll dive in and discuss all the aspects. Could this be a look inside the Obsidian Order? We'll examine the central questions of this episode, too: We'll discuss whether Edward Jellico was a bad Captain, whether Riker conducted himself like a Starfleet Officer, and whether or not this is Patrick Stewart's best turn as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Plus--news on the DS9 Documentary, news on Star Trek Continues' 8th episodes (and the road to their series finale, new pins from our friends at FanSets, and a new premiere date for Discovery?? S1 Ep 91The Axanar Settlement
With just 11 days before the start of a copyright infringement trial, Axanar Productions and Alec Peters announced they had settled the lawsuit brought against them by CBS and Paramount Pictures. It was a case that had taken many twists and turns, ultimately revealing in court filings that the "Independent Star Trek Film" was out of money, having spent $1,400,000.00 with nothing to show for it. Joining us to talk about the settlement is screenwriter and producer Carlos Pedraza--the principal behind AxaMonitor.com--the fact-checking and reporting that was created in the wake of the lawsuit against Axanar Productions and Alec Peters. He is also a former educator, Associated Press writer, and Fan Film Producer---three past lives which have all added a unique and wonderful perspective to his coverage of this whole mess. We'll discuss what this agreement means for the beleaguered production and what will happen to the film itself. Plus, we'll discuss the potential ramifications for Star Trek fans who donated to the crowdfunding and what recourse they might have. We'll also pose questions to Carlos from our Official Facebook Group, Camp Khitomer! SPECIAL THANKS We can't thank FIVE YEAR MISSION enough.
