S1 Ep 44James Kerwin

If you're caught up on Star Trek Continues, then you're definitely familiar with the work of this week's guest, director James Kerwin. In addition to his work writing, directing, and story editing on that series, he's also the writer and director of the amazing sci-fi noir film, "Yesterday Was a Lie," as well as the short film "R.U.R.: Genesis," based on the landmark 1919 science fiction story by Czech playwright, Karel Capek. James comes by to chat with Dan and Bill about Back to the Future II, his love of Doctor Who, why Bill hates "Yesterday's Enterprise," directing Star Trek Continues...and how he went from being an astrophysics student to making films! Grab your phaser, your sonic screwdriver, and your hoverboard and enjoy Episode 44 of the Trek Geeks Podcast!

S1 Ep 43To Axanar and Beyond!

While we were away on our holiday break, there were a few...uh...developments...in the world of Star Trek, too. The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released along with Star Wars: The Force Awakens! We'll break down what we thought of it--AND why we're not freaking out yet. We're also going to take some time to talk about the lawsuit brought against Axanar Productions by CBS and Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement. In full disclosure, we've both donated to Axanar on two different occasions. We are not attorneys and do not claim to know the intricacies of intellectual property law. There are things we’ve observed and questions/concerns was have AS DONORS that will be the focus of our discussion in today's episode. Allow us to say up front that we have absolutely no beef or problem with Alec Peters, Rob Burnett, or anyone associated with Axanar. We’ve had Alec on our podcast twice--once at our invite and once at Axanar's request. We've asked our listeners to consider donating to this project in the past, and we feel justified in asking some of these questions in the wake of the lawsuit. Let us also say that we do NOT believe that anyone associated with Axanar has done anything illegal or malfeasant in any way. That's not what this episode is about. Most importantly, we want to see the Axanar feature completed. We LOVE the concept. We LOVE the story. Truthfully, that's why we donated our money in the first place. We hope for a resolution in this dispute so the movie can be made and fans around the world can enjoy the movie. We'll also kick off our Trek50 Project for Star Trek's 50th Anniversary and YOU play a direct part in it! All you have to do is tell us about the very first time you ever watched Star Trek! Find out more in today's episode or on our Trek50 page! S1 Ep 422015 Outtakes Special

bonus

As 2015 draws to a close, we thought we'd put together some special bonus content before we return with an all-new episode on January 12, 2016! Many of you know that following the end theme of every podcast episode, there is an outtake--something that we talked about either immediately before or after recording that week's show. The Match Game theme...Coconut!...Dan's impersonations...Downton Abbey...they all got their start in the outtakes of the Trek Geeks Podcast and have taken on a life of their own. Some of you have heard them, and some of you haven't, so we assembled a collection of all our clips from 2015 in one super-sized, outtakes-only episode! We have had such a fun and amazing time with every episode and we can't thank all of you enough for being part of our first year! We wish you all the happiest of New Years and an amazing 2016!

S1 Ep 42The Wreath of Khan, Pt. 2 w/Ken Ray

After all the fun and frivolity that we had with Larry Nemecek last week, we just HAD to continue our special Wreath of Khan extravaganza, and this week we have upped the stakes!! Today, we continue our discussion about what may possibly be the best holiday movie ever with the one and only Ken Ray from Mission Log - A Roddenberry Star Trek Podcast! S1 Ep 40TOS State of Mind!

It’s really no surprise that we are still riding high from our visit to the Star Trek Continues set recently. As a result of being immersed in the TOS Universe for several days, we felt it was only fitting to dedicate Episode 40 of the Trek Geeks Podcast to The Original Series. We will mix it up a bit by talking about things that we love as well as things that we hate about Kirk's crew. First we will discuss the characters from the Original Series that we truly despised for one reason or another. Which characters, whether special guests or series regulars that just got under our skin, and why? Then, as if were hit by the spores of Omicron Ceti III we delve into our most loved episodes of TOS! You may be surprised. As we like to say, the "Champion Rule" dictates that someone’s most loved episode is someone else’s most hated! Also, our friends at Star Trek Continues had a lot of news this past week. We will discuss the ribbon cutting ceremony they had for the new Engine Room, the announced title of Episode 6, the surprise visit of the one and only Rod Roddenberry to the set (yes we did get to meet him) and what it felt like for us when STC posted a pic of us with the Captain himself on their official Facebook page! In addition we will talk about the latest levels of the Star Trek Renegades fundraiser and whether or not we think they will meet there goal. With just days to go at the time of recording, they are close, but are they close enough? Plus, a short, fan made teaser for Star Trek Deep Space 9 on Blue Ray recently started getting some traction on the web. We will discuss why one of us is very excited about the possibility, while the other thinks is completely meaningless! All this, plus the triumphant return of a special all TOS version of Stump The Geek in this week’s all-new episode of Trek Geeks – A Star Trek Podcast.

S1 Ep 39Happy Treksgiving!

Here in the United States, it's the week of both Thanksgiving (or "Treksgiving" as we like to call it) and Black Friday--the single biggest holiday shopping day of the year. In this week's episode of Trek Geeks, we'll take a look at some of the gifts our fellow Trek Geeks might be interested in receiving this holiday season. Plus, we'll take a few moments to share the things that we're thankful for this year on a personal level. Then...well...we'll need to level with everyone and be honest about something. As you might have noticed, we weren't able to publish an episode of the podcast last week because we were both travelling. What we haven't been able to tell you--until now--is where we were and why it postponed last week's regularly scheduled episode. The Trek Geeks were the invited guests of the Star Trek Continues cast and crew as they filmed an episode last week! Now that their shoot is over, we'll tell you a little bit about our trip and we'll recount stepping foot on the iconic Bridge of the Starship Enterprise for the very first time. We cannot thank the cast and crew of Star Trek Continues enough for their hospitality and their kindness. They are a truly amazing group of people and we were incredibly fortunate and grateful to spend a couple of days with them. All that, plus we'll talk about some of the latest Star Trek news in this week's all-new episode of Trek Geeks - A Star Trek Podcast. We hope that those of you traveling this week for the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States have a safe and Happy Treksgiving!

S1 Ep 38Star Trek - The Next Chapter

Ten long years. That's how long it's been since we've been able to watch new episodes of Star Trek. This week, CBS made an announcement that shook fandom to its very core: We're getting a brand new Star Trek series in January of 2017! Bill and Dan will take a look at the announcement made by CBS on November 2, 2015 which gave details on how the new series would be broadcast: a national premiere on the CBS Television Network with all episodes after that available on their streaming platform, CBS All Access. They'll discuss what we know from the announcement, what we don't know, and what we might be able to expect from a brand new Star Trek! In addition, they'll talk about the reaction among fans on social media, and how there have been some very loud, negative voices. Plus, voice mails and a listener question, all in this week's brand new episode of Trek Geeks - A Star Trek Podcast, "Star Trek - The Next Chapter!" ...and, by the way...did we mention WE'RE GETTING A NEW STAR TREK SERIES??!?!??!?!?!?!? (CORRECTION: In the podcast episode, Bill mentions that the first month is free on All Access when, in fact, the first week is free when you subscribe to the service.)

S1 Ep 36Make It So!

This week on Trek Geeks - A Star Trek Podcast, we take a look at the second live-action Star Trek series, Star Trek: The Next Generation! Premiering twenty-eight years ago, TNG was a risk in the eyes of a lot of fans. "If it doesn't have Kirk and Spock, it doesn't have me," was the attitude of many prior to the show's debut. Over the years, Next Gen has become the Gold Standard of modern era Trek with characters and stories we adore and cherish. It's hard to imagine trapping lightning in a bottle twice, but Gene certainly did it! Bill and Dan will examine the first two seasons and how challenging it was to get this series on the air, how season three changed the franchise, and whether or not TNG's success was a hindrance to the other live-action Trek shows that followed. Plus, we'll talk about episodes that fans typically love or hate and why we have the opposite view of them! (SPOILER ALERT: Both Bill's and Dan's most hated episodes list contains one of the most loved episodes of all time!) In addition, we'll take a look at some recent news in the world of Star Trek with an update on Star Trek Beyond, as well as updates on two independent productions: Star Trek Renegades and Star Trek Continues. REMEMBERING GENE This weekend also marks the 24th anniversary of the death of Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry. Bill has talked about his meeting Gene in the past, and today we'll recall where we were when we heard the news as well whether or not The Great Bird of the Galaxy would be pleased with the current state of Star Trek. Lastly, we'll respond to some feedback that was left on our Facebook page regarding our episode on Star Trek: Enterprise! It's a Super Sized Episode of Trek Geeks and we hope you'll join us!

S1 Ep 34It's Been A Long Road...

We've spent a lot of time talking about some of the other Star Trek television series, and we decided it was finally time to give the most recent one some love! It's hard to believe that Star Trek: Enterprise went off the air just over ten years ago, isn't it? In this week's episode, we'll talk about a variety of topics regarding the last Trek show, including: Did we like the premise and characters? Was the Temporal Cold War a good idea? Did the Xindi arc kill the series? In addition, we'll also talk about Dan's favorite episodes--the Mirror Universe two-parter, of course! There's a lot that happened in "In a Mirror, Darkly," and we'll talk about what worked for us in that story and what didn't. Then, Dan seizes control of the show once again and subjects Bill to the second-ever edition of GEEK THE STUMP! Can Bill improve upon his disastrous showing in the last outing? Will he utterly embarrass himself like he did last time? It's a fun and engaging episode of the Trek Geeks Podcast and we hope you'll join us!

S1 Ep 33Divided We Stand

SPOILER ALERT!! As promised, this week we consider the latest episode from the amazing folks at Star Trek Continues! "Divided We Stand" is the fifth episode of the series and it finds Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy in the midst of the American Civil War! Plus, we'll review some of the latest news in the world of Star Trek, including: Star Trek Beyond begins filming in Dubai. Skype's new "Universal Translator." Hallmark's new Christmas Ornament featuring the death of Spock in Star Trek II. We'll also clarify something from last week--the Temporal Prime Directive! There's a lot to cover, but we can't stress this enough: THIS PODCAST EPISODE IS FILLED WITH SPOILERS. If you haven't seen "Divided We Stand" yet, stop now and watch the episode first!

S1 Ep 32The Finales

Last week we examined the pilot episodes of the Star Trek universe, so this week it only made sense that we would take a look at the final episodes of the respective shows! Dan and Bill will discuss which pilots were... ...the best last episode of their series?...the best finale for a Trek series in general?...the worst last episode of their series?...the worst finale for a Trek series in general? Plus, which finale would we have made changes to entirely and told a slightly different story? And, find out which of the last episodes Bill thinks is a lot better than most Trek fans think! In addition, we'll also discuss some more developments in the world of Trek: "The Autobiography of James T. Kirk" by David A. Goodman. Star Trek: Wrath of Gems. It's our longest episode title ever and we hope you'll join us!

S1 Ep 30Could It Happen??

It's amazing where the inspiration for podcast content can come from--and this episode, truth be told, is due in large part to STLV. With "Force Friday" having happened this past week and it being Labor Day Weekend here in the United States, what better time to break from our standard format and have a round table discussion? One morning over a sumptuous breakfast of some incredible corned beef hash at the Hash House a Go Go in Las Vegas, Dan and Bill were joined by their good friends Craig Ewing and Chris Mumfrey in a discussion on Star Trek versus Star Wars...but from a completely different angle... Could Darth Vader be assimilated by the Borg?? Plus, we'll talk about the recent WatchMojo.com video where they pitted the two franchises against one another--and then we'll tell you why their video is thoroughly wrong. Bill might even confess to owning the entire Buck Rogers in the 25th Century series in this episode, too. Allegedly. We hope you'll enjoy this roundtable discussion on Episode 30 of the Trek Geeks Podcast! May the Force Be With You!
