The Canonization of Vatican II

The Canonization of Vatican II Well, here we are. The day that changes everything in the traditional Catholic movement - the "canonization" of Angelo Roncalli and Karol Wojtyla, also known as "Pope" John XXIII and "Pope" John Paul II. We have reached an event in history that has only been rivaled by Vatican Council II and the introduction of the Novus Ordo Missae of Paul VI. Today's events are of such monumental and unspeakable scandal that words fail us to provide an apt description of this program. Why is this not just business as usual? What will now happen to the traditional Catholic movement as a whole? How will those who identify themselves "traditional Catholics" reconcile their belief that Francis is a legitimate Pope bearing the authority of Christ with the idea that John Paul II is now a saint raised to the altars. The Conciliar Church now says that John Paul II is not only to be venerated -- but imitated -- as a man who displayed heroic virtue and doctrinal purity. Join us for a live roundtable discussion amongst panelists Father Bernard Uttley, OSB, Nicholas Wansbutter, Justin Soeder, Mario Derksen, and Bill Seng as we discuss one of the darkest days in the history of Catholicism and the event that changes everything. The Spiritual Life, Episode 5: The Indwelling of the Holy Ghost

The Spiritual Life, Episode 5: The Indwelling of the Holy Ghost Like a tender father, Our Divine Savior told His Apostles before His glorious Ascension into Heaven: “I will not leave you orphans: I will come to you…Yet a little while and the world seeth me no more. But you see me: because I live, and you shall live.” Our Lord said that it was expedient for them that He go. Our Lord would depart from them but He was to return in a new way; not in the flesh, for He took His glorified Body into Heaven, but He was to return and `abide with them in the Spirit. Christ would send into their souls the Paraclete, that is, the Consoler and Advocate, a Divine Friend – the Holy Ghost, the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. Sanctifying grace makes the just soul a partaker of the divine nature and supernaturally adopted child of God – grace makes the soul a temple of the Holy Ghost – not only of the Holy Ghost but the entire Holy Trinity. Almighty God literally dwells in the soul in grace. This presence is a real presence. This is a fundamental and beautiful truth of the Catholic Faith that is so fruitful for the interior life of the soul. Join Nicholas Wansbutter and Father Bernard Uttley, in this 5th episode of The Spiritual Life, as they discuss the Ascension of Our Lord, the mystery of the decent of the Holy Ghost, and ultimately the divine indwelling of the Holy Trinity in the soul in sanctifying grace. The Spiritual Life, Episode 4: The Resurrection of Our Lord & Sanctifying Grace

The Spiritual Life, Episode 4: The Resurrection of Our Lord & Sanctifying Grace In this fourth episode of The Spiritual Life, we begin by talking about the great mystery of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the central doctrine of Catholicism and is a compendium of the Faith – embracing within the whole plan of redemption. If our Blessed Savior, after His glorious triumph over death, continued to dwell on earth, it is without doubt that His Risen Life is meant to have its own purpose and meaning for our spiritual life. Our Lord did not ascend from the Cross straight to Heaven, and neither are we meant to. Our Lord said that “I am come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” He was not talking of merely physical, natural life but a supernatural, divine life, which is none other than the life of sanctifying grace. Our Lord became man for the express purpose of raising us to divine life. God, says St. Peter, “has given us most great and precious promises that by these you may be made partakers of the Divine nature.” The awesomeness of this truth is so often misunderstood, forgotten, or rarely discussed and appreciated and yet it is so firmly a part of Catholic tradition. As Father Leen says, “Without an adequate notion of grace there cannot be an adequate notion of Catholicity. For the Catholic system is not merely a means to right living, much less an ingenious contrivance to help us to evade the unpleasant consequences of wrong living. The Church with its system exists primarily for the communication of grace to the souls of men.” Join host Nicholas Wansbutter and Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B. as they discuss the mysteries of the Resurrection and sanctifying grace and their relation to the spiritual life of the soul. The Spiritual Life, Episode 2: Doctrinal Foundations of the Spiritual Life (Part 2)

The Spiritual Life, Episode 2: Doctrinal Foundations of the Spiritual Life (Part 2) In this second Episode of The Spiritual Life, we continue discussing Father Edward Leen’s book The Holy Ghost and His Work in Souls (1935). As we move into the second chapter dealing with the Holy Ghost Himself, we will deal with the great mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, the greatest mystery of our holy Catholic Faith. As a Catholic, nothing should be more important to us than the fact that our God, the one true God, is One God in Three Divine Persons. This is the heart of our faith, the foundation of Christianity – the fundamental doctrine taught by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It was central to Him – the supreme revelation about God. We must remember that God Himself has an interior life and that God’s interior life is ultimately the source, meaning, and the goal of our own interior, spiritual life. Although we can never totally comprehend this great mystery, it is important to have at least an appreciation of it since without an exalted view of God, we will not have an exalted view of union with God. Without an exalted notion of who and what God is, in His nature and in His Triune life, we will not highly value many other truths of our Faith: the Incarnation, Redemption, sanctifying grace, the Indwelling of the Holy Trinity in the souls of the just, nor Heaven itself – the Beatific Vision and Possession of the Most Holy Trinity for all eternity. Join Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B. and our host Nicholas Wansbutter, as they discuss the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and its relation to the spiritual life of our soul in this world and in the next. The Spiritual Life, Episode 3: The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ

The Spiritual Life, Episode 3: The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ For this the third Episode of The Spiritual Life, we will take a break from commenting directly on Father Leen’s book The Holy Ghost and His Work in Souls. Instead, since we are in the holy season of Lent, we will discuss the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ in relation to our own spiritual life. Again, we will use Father Leen’s works on this topic as our guide and inspiration since he has dealt with this topic so profoundly. As Father Leen brings out, the Catholic understanding of the Cross is this: the Cross is really Christ’s theory of life, His philosophy of life, His way of life, His way to Heaven, and unless we understand it in that way, our devotion to the Passion of Christ is not as it should be. It is the symbol of the Christian way of living. The Cross is the secret, the door, that allows us to take part in the divine life of grace that His passion and death merited for us. In short, the cross does not end with Christ. We must, through the carrying of our own cross in union with Our Lord’s, enter into our Lord’s passion in order to benefit by it. Sacrifice is the essential condition for attaining the salvation which Christ our Savior won for us. There is no salvation that does not cost us something. The Cross of the Divine Master does not dispense us from carrying our cross in His footsteps. Sacrifice is not only for the Savior, but also for those who desire to be saved. The Cross is not only for Christ, but for every Christian. Ultimately, this truth leads us to the great mystery of the Mystical Body of Christ – the sacrifice of the Head is complete, but the Whole Mystical Christ – Head and Body – must take part in the passion, therefore the Mystical Body must have its part as well. Join Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B., and our host Nicholas Wansbutter, as they discuss the Cross of Christ and its relation to the spiritual life of our soul. The Spiritual Life, Episode 1: Doctrinal Foundations of the Spiritual Life (Part 1)

The Spiritual Life, Episode 1: Doctrinal Foundations of the Spiritual Life (Part 1) It has already been said that the supernatural life of the soul must be firmly established on the solid basis of Catholic dogma. Our life must be based on truth. When tempted in the desert, Christ refuted Satan by quoting the book of Deuteronomy: “Not on bread alone doth man live, but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.” Revealed truth, therefore, is food for the soul. In this first episode of The Spiritual Life, Father Bernard will begin a three part series presenting some important doctrinal foundations of the spiritual life. As a text to guide us through this series, Father will be using a book by one of his favorite spiritual writers, Father Edward Leen, C.S.Sp. (1885-1944), entitled – The Holy Ghost and His Work in Souls. Join us as host Nicholas Wansbutter allows Father Bernard guide us in this important series which will show how the various dogmas of our Catholic Faith are not only meant to nourish our spiritual life but are the very foundations of sanctity and union with God in time and eternity.
