The Spiritual Life, Episode 16: Mystical Contemplation
The Spiritual Life, Episode 16: Mystical Contemplation In this episode of The Spiritual Life, we start a study of the more advanced stages of mystical contemplation. Before a detailed study of the actual various grades of mystical prayer, Father Bernard covers many issues that lay the foundation of mystical prayer. The concept of contemplation itself is reviewed; the distinction between what is essential to contemplation and what is merely accidental, including the various extraordinary phenomena that often, but not necessarily, accompanies mystical prayer; mystical prayer's possible effects on the body and the binding of the faculties known by the term "ligature." Join Father Bernard Uttley, OSB in this general introduction to the study of the more advanced grades of infused mystical contemplation. "No amount of exterior work is as pleasing to God, as useful to the Church and to souls as that loving contemplation, in which the soul allows God to act as He pleases in her. It is for that He has created her. 'Mary has chosen the better part which shall not be taken away from her.'" (Fr. Gabriel Diefenbach, O.F.M.Cap., 1946) Original Air Date: May 2, 2017 Show Run Time: 42 minutes Show Guest(s): Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B.

Find out with Father Michael Oswalt why the Catholic Church is the only religion expressly approved by God and why the Novus Ordo is not the Catholic Church but a false religion. In this episode, Father Oswalt discusses Divine Tradition, how it was transmitted and proof that the early Catholics held the same beliefs as true Catholics today, as well as the Creeds of the Catholic Faith. The Spiritual Life, Episode 15: Contemplation Summary
The Spiritual Life, Episode 15: Contemplation Summary In this episode, Father Bernard summarizes the previous two long episodes on Contemplation in order to make the subjects more accessible. This episode begins with establishing that the dark night of the senses comes as the transitional crisis between the stages of beginners to the stage of proficient – the purgative to the illuminative stage respectively. St. John of the Cross said: “The night of sense is common and comes to many: these are the beginners.” Not everyone who experiences a little dryness in prayer is going through the dark night the soul. There are signs, three signs, that St. John of the Cross lists and explains that indicate a soul is passing from meditation to the more simple and spiritual form of prayer called contemplation. When all three signs are present at once, then contemplation is beginning; if not, then its something else. One: The Soul is Unable to Meditate. Two: Lack of consolation in prayer and worldly things. Three: An inclination and peace in spending time in God’s presence with a wordless, quiet, peaceful, loving “gazing” upon God. Contemplation is a supernatural love and knowledge of God, simple and obscure, infused by him into the summit of the soul, giving it a direct and experimental contact with Him. Original Air Date: March 9, 2017 Show Run Time: 38 minutes Show Guest(s): Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B.

The Spiritual Life, Episode 14: Contemplation (Part 2)
The Spiritual Life, Episode 14: Contemplation (Part 2) The Three Signs of Contemplation In this episode of the Spiritual Life, we continue the study on Contemplation. The period in the spiritual life that marks the transition to the prayer of contemplation is called by St. John of the Cross the Dark Night of the Senses. There are signs - 3 signs - that St. John of the Cross lists and explains that indicate a soul is passing from meditation to the more simple and spiritual form of prayer, called by St. John of the Cross, infused contemplation. “But many persons,” Abbot John Chapman writes, “pass long years in this dark night, when they cannot meditate, and yet are afraid to contemplate; and the signs may be less easy to recognize. … They have imagined themselves to be going back, because they have no devotion, no ‘feelings’; and perhaps they are really going back, since they have not learnt the right path forward.” This state has been rightly called a Common Mystic Prayer. Join Father Bernard as he goes deeper into each of the 3 signs, providing practical advice for this common state for devout souls. Original Air Date: December 17, 2016 Show Run Time: 2 hours Show Guest(s): Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B.

In this episode, Father Oswalt continues from last episode discussing aberrations of Protestantism (which also applies to the Novus Ordo) before launching into the incorruption of tradition. The Spiritual Life, Episode 13: Contemplation (Part 1)
The Spiritual Life, Episode 13: Contemplation (Part 1) In this episode of The Spiritual Life we begin the study of the fascinating kind of prayer called contemplation. Knowledge concerning contemplation and mystical theology in general is certainly rare these days and yet it is of great importance for a healthy spiritual life. The reason is simple: many people, both religious and lay, experience the beginnings of contemplation without knowing how to cooperate with this grace. The crisis in the spiritual life that marks the transition to the prayer of contemplation is called by St. John of the Cross the Dark Night of the Senses. St. John said: “The night of sense is common and comes to many: these are the beginners.” Failure to understand what is going in state will cause one to unwittingly frustrate God’s grace and one’s progress in prayer. This episode of The Spiritual Life is the first of a series on contemplation that will deal with the beginnings of contemplation, the Dark Night of the Senses, and other connected subjects that have been subject of controversy amongst various authors. The Spiritual Life, Episode 12: Spiritual Communion
The Spiritual Life, Episode 12: Spiritual Communion In this episode of The Spiritual Life, Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B., continues in line with the past series on prayer by dealing with an act of devotion that is of utmost importance for progress in the spiritual life, namely, the act of Spiritual Communion. In these days of apostasy when there are very few true priests offering the true Mass, many of the Catholic faithful have difficulty attending Mass and receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Fortunately, there is an act of devotion that is called Spiritual Communion where it is possible to gain many of the graces of Holy Communion when receiving the actual Sacrament is impossible for a legitimate reason. The great St. Thomas teaches: “Spiritual Communion consists in an ardent desire of receiving Jesus Christ in the Holy Sacrament and in embracing Him with the same love as if you had actually received Him.” And St. Leonard of Port-Maurice says: “Spiritual Communion is a treasure which enriches the soul with inestimable wealth, and is capable of producing the very same graces as sacramental, and in some instances greater.” And elsewhere, he wrote: “By it many souls have attained to high perfection.” For those serious about their spiritual life and for those unable to receive Holy Communion daily – this subject should be of tremendous consolation and help. Original Air Date: July 20, 2016 Show Run Time: 42 minutes Show Guest(s): Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B.

Tradition and the Church, Episode 1: Perpetual Apostolic Succession
Tradition and the Church, Episode 1: Perpetual Apostolic Succession In this episode of Tradition and the Church, Father Michael Oswalt discusses the particular governmental form of the Church, the true meaning of "perpetual apostolic succession," the special gifts given personally to the Apostles that were not transmitted to their successors, as well as the importance of the Unicity and Universality of the Faith and how the lack of both of these lead to complete incoherence in Protestantism, in both the Rationalist and Fundamentalist branches. The Spiritual Life, Episode 11: The Golden Key of Heaven: An Act of Perfect Contrition
The Spiritual Life, Episode 11: The Golden Key of Heaven: An Act of Perfect Contrition The Spiritual Life is back with a new episode on perhaps the greatest of prayers and what has been called The Golden Key of Heaven, namely, an Act of Perfect Contrition. In this episode we’ll discuss what contrition is, what Perfect Contrition is as distinguished from Imperfect Contrition, and the tremendous spiritual effects of this act, and whether it is difficult or relatively easy to make. The vital importance of the Act of Perfect Contrition can hardly be overstated as its primary effect is to recover sanctifying grace outside of the Sacrament of Penance; something especially important in these days of few, true priests. Therefore, knowing about this act, and forming a habit of making an act of Perfect Contrition often, may mean the difference between saving one’s soul…and losing it. This episode is an in-depth presentation of this timely subject. The time spent in studying this subject is time well spent for your soul and the souls of those who you can encourage to make this soul saving Act. Cardinal Franzelin, considered by many as the greatest theologian of the 19th century, said: “Could I preach throughout the whole world, of nothing would I speak more frequently than of perfect contrition!” Original Air Date: February 26, 2016 Show Run Time: 1 hour 47 minutes Show Guest(s): Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B. Escape From the Novus Ordo, Episode 6: The Novus Ordo Seminary
Escape from the Novus Ordo, Episode 6: The Novus Ordo Seminary The main purpose of a Catholic priest is to offer the Mass for the living and the dead, forgive sin, pray the office, to sacrifice everyday for the people, and to perform the sacramental work. This is not the case for Novus Ordo presbyters. In this episode Father Michael Oswalt recounts his time in the Novus Ordo seminary where modernism was in full display. Through the grace of God, Father realized there was a problem in the Novus Ordo sect and in attempting to alleviate his doubts, found that he was not a true priest due to the change in the Sacrament of Holy Orders and the 1968 Rite of Episcopal Consecration. He then knew he had to escape and become a true priest. Father also addresses those currently in the Novus Ordo seminary along with advice for their Catholic friends and family. The Spiritual Life, Episode 10: The Life of Prayer (Part 3): Meditation
The Spiritual Life, Episode 10: The Life of Prayer (Part 3): Meditation In this episode of The Spiritual Life, we continue with the great topic of prayer by discussing that form of mental prayer which is called meditation. St. Teresa of Avila gives her definition of mental prayer as: “Mental prayer is nothing else than an intimate friendship, a frequent heart-to-heart conversation with Him by whom we know ourselves to be loved.” This conversation with God, with Our Divine Lord, can take two different forms: meditation or contemplation. Meditation is a form of prayer where one reflects and systematically considers various religious truths in order to build convictions and to stir up acts of the will towards God (e.g. acts of Faith, love of God, sorrow for sin, etc.) It is raising the mind to God in order to raise the heart to God in loving converse. The method used can be varied and simplified. Meditation is thinking about God in order to love God; the soul mounting up to God. Meditation, in one form or another, is the usual and necessary beginning in a soul’s question for union with God through mental prayer. Meditation should bring a generous and faithful soul, eventually, to the grace of contemplation – a higher form of mental prayer. Join host, John Thomson and Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B. as they discuss the subject of meditation: its essential nature and purpose, and practical advice concerning its practice on this episode of The Spiritual Life. Escape from the Novus Ordo, Episode 1: Recognizing the Problem
Escape from the Novus Ordo, Episode 1: Recognizing the Problem What is the Novus Ordo Sect? Have you finally awakened to the reality that it is not the Catholic Church? How do you now, armed with the knowledge of Roman Catholicism, escape the impostor religion? What is a "Cafeteria Catholic? Are you praying the Rosary daily? "Escape from the Novus Ordo" is a new show for season 4 with Father Michael Oswalt, who was “ordained” in the Novus Ordo in 2009 and through the grace of God, left the Novus Ordo, re-entered the seminary and was ordained as a true priest in 2011. The purpose of this show is to help give encouragement and guidance from a true Catholic priest in becoming a true Catholic in order to save your soul. “Recognizing the Problem” begins with seeking Catholic truth with good will and maintaining a prayer life. Realizing the “New Order,” the Novus Ordo sect, is a complete and totally different religion from Roman Catholicism. The moral and doctrinal issues of the Novus Ordo contradict Catholicism and the witness of the Saints. Would the Saints of the past recognize the Novus Ordo as Catholic? Are you a “Cafeteria Catholic” and you don’t even know it? Is Faith dictated by feelings? Is it enough to have “Latin Mass” without the Faith behind it? What about obedience to the Holy Father? Join Father Michael Oswalt, pastor of St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church in Laceys Spring, Alabama, and host Jason Guardiano as they discuss “Recognizing the Problem" as the first step to escaping from the Novus Ordo. Enjoy the entire episode thanks to the courteous and generous sponsorship of Novus Ordo Watch, which exposes the Novus Ordo sect for what it is. The Spiritual Life, Episode 9: The Life of Prayer (Part 2)
The Spiritual Life, Episode 9: The Life of Prayer (Part 2) In this episode of The Spiritual Life, we will be continuing our series on the great subject of Prayer, especially discussing vocal prayer. Being composite creatures, man can give glory to God with both his body and soul in vocal prayer. Prayer has traditionally been defined as the raising of the mind and heart to God. Vocal prayer, therefore, in order to be prayer at all, must truly involve a raising of the mind and heart to God – mere lip service is not real prayer. This interior aspect of vocal prayer, particularly in our private spiritual life, is crucial to understand for real progress in the spiritual life. It will force us to realize that “less is sometimes more,” in that quality is more important than quantity. In the words of St. Benedict: “Let us be assured that it is not in many words, but in the purity of heart and tears of compunction that we are heard. For this reason, prayer ought to be short and pure.” Father will discuss various points of practical advice as regards the method of reciting vocal prayers Join the new host of The Spiritual Life, John Thomson, as he discusses with Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B., the important subject of vocal prayer. Vocal prayer is a means (for most souls, a necessary one) to an end – devotion to God. The Spiritual Life, Episode 8: The Life of Prayer (Part 1)
The Spiritual Life, Episode 8: The Life of Prayer (Part 1) In this episode of The Spiritual Life, we begin a multi-part series discussing the most important element of Catholic spirituality – prayer. Prayer is the heart and soul, the very life-blood, of the interior life of the soul. Progress in prayer is progress in the spiritual life. Indeed, prayer is morally necessary for the salvation of an adult. St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote: “He who prays will be saved; he who does not pray will certainly be lost. All who have been saved, were saved through prayer. All who have been lost were through their neglect of prayer.” Therefore prayer is clearly of the utmost importance to understand and live in our daily lives. Join host Nicholas Wansbutter and Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B. as they talk about the meaning, importance, and practice of prayer – with topics covered such as petitionary prayer; prayer intentions; the “problem” of unanswered prayers. This show will lay the foundation for the next episodes in this series which will deal with vocal prayer, mental prayer, and the beginnings of the prayer of contemplation. St. Teresa of Avila said: “There is but one road that reaches God, and that is prayer. If anyone shows you another, you are being deceived.” Original Air Date: November 24, 2014 Show Run Time: 1 hour 26 minutes Show Guest(s): Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B. The Spiritual Life, Episode 7: Abandonment to Divine Providence (Part 2)
The Spiritual Life, Episode 7: Abandonment to Divine Providence (Part 2) On this month's episode of The Spiritual Life, we continue from last month's episode with Part 2 of the subject of Abandonment to Divine Providence. The essence of sanctity is the love of God, and the love of God is essentially the conformity, or union, of our will with God’s holy will. God’s will is manifested to us positively in His signified will – commandments, evangelicals counsels, duties of our state in life, etc. – and also in His permissive will, namely, Divine Providence. We must unite our will both actively and passively with God’s will. This can be summarized in the following maxim: we must do what God wants, and want what God does. For a healthy spiritual life, we must be obedient to God’s commandments, but to reach sanctity we must also, and most especially, practice abandonment to Divine Providence. We must not only resign ourselves to accept what God allows and wills to happen in our lives, but we must will it as well – we should want what God wants and abandon ourselves as little children in the arms of our Heavenly Father and absolutely trust His wisdom and goodness. This is not easy for fallen human nature, but this practice spells sanctity as well as profound peace of soul. In this 7th Episode of The Spiritual Life, we continue taking a look at the vitally important Catholic doctrine, namely, Divine Providence and we shall see how important it is for our spiritual life and how to practice abandonment to Divine Providence. Join host Nicholas Wansbutter and Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B., pastor of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in London, Ontario as they discuss this most foundational aspect of the spiritual life: abandonment to Divine Providence.
