The Spiritual Life, Episode 9: The Life of Prayer (Part 2)
In this episode of The Spiritual Life, we will be continuing our series on the great subject of Prayer, especially discussing vocal prayer. Being composite creatures, man can give glory to God with both his body and soul in vocal prayer. Prayer has traditionally been defined as the raising of the mind and heart to God. Vocal prayer, therefore, in order to be prayer at all, must truly involve a raising of the mind and heart to God – mere lip service is not real prayer.
This interior aspect of vocal prayer, particularly in our private spiritual life, is crucial to understand for real progress in the spiritual life. It will force us to realize that “less is sometimes more,” in that quality is more important than quantity. In the words of St. Benedict: “Let us be assured that it is not in many words, but in the purity of heart and tears of compunction that we are heard. For this reason, prayer ought to be short and pure.”
Father will discuss various points of practical advice as regards the method of reciting vocal prayers
Join the new host of The Spiritual Life, John Thomson, as he discusses with Father Bernard Uttley, O.S.B., the important subject of vocal prayer. Vocal prayer is a means (for most souls, a necessary one) to an end – devotion to God.
