Three Geeky Dads

What a year this week has been! We're now a full week into 2024...yes, a new year is, once again upon us and that means it's time for looking back at the year that was...the good, the bad and everything in-between! We're dedicating our first episode of the new year to talk about what we liked and what we didn't like about what 2023 gave us the form of movies, streaming TV, comics, music and more!

We have a new holiday special! It's our own version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer! Written by our own Marc Macrina (Marc also performs the role of Donner and Jack-Nicholson-in-the box) and starring Derek R as Rudolph and Christopher Walken, Brien R as Santa and Yukon Cornelius, Tito R as Fireball and Corey Feldman (NOT starring Chris R, despite all of the references to the movie THE ROOM...go figure!) and, friend of the show, Dean "R" Calusdian as King Moonracer!

This week, as Christmas fast approaches, we bring you a new ESCAPE POD episode. Marc & Dean invite Brien to tag along as they take a look at some of their favorite Christmas horror movies!

Back in 2018 when Marc asked his friend Brien what he knew about starting a podcast, did he realize that this little "hobby" would be going strong five years later? Who can say?!? What we do know, though, is that it's been a hilarious, wild and fun ride. For, what started out as 3 guys huddled around a single mic soon evolved into 4 guys, many, MANY equipment upgrades later, hanging out each week and sharing what they love with you, the listener...their passions for all things geeky!

Tonight friend of the show, frequent guest and all-around great guy, Josh Dahlin stops by to talk about a little movie he was lucky enough to be a part of...TROMA'S Curse Of The Weredeer! The film has not yet been released to the public but, Josh was kind enough to provide us with a screener of the film. Lisent in and find out what we all though of it and also stick around for all of Josh's great behind the scenes stories and our round-table discussion on why we think bad and cult movies are so popular!

In this episode, we take a look at the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie! The mutated, sewer-dwelling, pizza-munching, bad guy-punching teen heroes are voiced (for the first time) by actual teen voice actors but they are not alone for they're supported by a veritable who's who of Hollywood's hottest to save New York city from Super-fly's evil plans! And, speaking of New York, you know who else calls the Big Apple home? Yoko Ono...now, what does she have to do with the Ninja Turtles? Absolutely nothing...but, she seems to pop up a lot in this episode for some reason! Anyway, listen in and find out what we all though of the animated mutant mayhem as we cause a little mayhem of our own!!!

Halloween and traditions go together like tricks and treats...what do we mean by that? Well, we Geeky Dads have a halloween tradition where we like to watch the movies of the Halloween franchise while commenting on them. So, join us in the screening room...listen along or, better yet, watch along with us as, this year, we take on Michael Myers again with Halloween IV: The Return Of Michael Myers!

To wrap up our month long look at Hammer films and "slashers", we thought it would be fun to look at a film that showcases what could be America's first slasher...the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow in Tim Burton's 1999 film, Sleepy Hollow, which in itself, is his love-letter to the Hammer films of old which Burton loved! On this week's episode we reminisce about our recent trip to New York for NYCC 23 before we get into the meat of the episode...a look at the new Amazon Original Blumhouse production, Totally Killer...about the infamous "Sweet Sixteen Killer" returning 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim, but 17-year-old Jamie travels back in time to 1987, determined to stop the killer before he can even start. Listen in and find out what we all thought of this new horror-comedy-time travel film!

This week, as we get closer to Halloween, we thought we'd take a look at slasher movies. We talk about the good, the bad and the gory things that make a slasher film a slasher film! What do we like about slashers, what don't we like about them and what we think makes slasher films so popular year after year after year. Listen in and find out what we all thought.

Our HAMMER Halloween series continues as friend of the show and frequent guest, Dean Calusdian joins us to talk about Dracula: Prince of Darkness! The 1966 HAMMER Dracula sequel finds four British tourists who, despite the warnings of others, do not steer clear of Castle Dracula and soon find themselves the victims of the recently resurrected count! In our latest episode, your Geeky Dads begin our annual dive into the wonderful world of Hammer Horror! We kick it off with a look at the 1971 take on the old Jekyll and Hyde story...this time, Doctor Jekyll's formula transforms him into a murderous female! Listen in and find out what we thought!

It's mid September and we Geeky Dads already have Halloween on the mind. To kick off the spooky season, we wanted to take a look at the newest Dracula movie to hit cinemas (and now VOD), The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It's a literal chapter of the Dracula story that other films usually gloss over or omit altogether...the journey Dracula took to get from Transylvania to England aboard the ill-fated cargo ship, Demeter! It's Septermber and the kids are heading back to school! So tonight, we're taking a field-trip to Tromaville to take a look at the 1986 Troma Film's high school schlock-horror, The Class Of Nuke'em High!

This week, we're joined by friends of the show, Josh Hurst and Tyler Beck. Tyler wanted to come on and talk all things Spider-man...and that's just what we do! Join us for the conversation as we talk Spidey's villains, the comicbooks, ALL the past movies and, of course, the animated Miles Morales Spider-verse films!

Mark is back with another episode of Quarantine Theater where he takes a quick look at one of his favorite cult films. This time, it's 2 Days in the Valley!

One week ago, we had the pleasure of attending (and recording at) the first Dark Arts Festival in Lincoln RI. Organized by friend of the show, Josh Dahlin, it was a one day, 6 hour event that brought together, writers, artists, vendors and lovers of the horror genre from the south-eastern New England area and beyond! We had the amazing opportunity to meet and interview some amazing people such as Mark and Mike who were promoting their independent horror film, Attack of the Killer Refrigerator and it's sequel! We also got to speak to 2 amazing young men, Mattie and Sam who made their own Zombie film, and it's accompanying documentary about the making of the film...Spring Break Zombie Massacre! We also got to meet and talk to many other amazing creators and fans and lovers of horror and you can hear it all here!

This past week, Derek was on vacation (at the beach...'natch!) and poor Tito wasn't feeling good so Brien and Mark decided to do a short ESCAPE POD episode about Star Trek (The Original Series). That's right, we're boldly going where everyone has gone before!

Summer is in full swing so, pack up the cooler and load up the car and come along with us as we complain about the sand getting everywhere while we talk about some of our favorite beach movies!

We here at Three Geeky Dads Podcast are thrilled at the fact that What We Do In The Shadows has just begun it's 5th season. But we wanted to take a look back at the 2014 film that started it all. So, tonight, we take a look at one of our favorite "mockumentaries"...written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the film follows the (after) lives of a group of vampire room mates, sharing a flat in Wellington New Zealand.

This time we present to you, an episode almost 5 years in the making...dear listener, welcome to the Jurassic Park 30th anniversary episode!!!

This week, we all went to see The Flash movie together and now, we're going to tell you all about what we thought! With it's long development history to it's troubled star to it's secret and not-so-secret cameos, we try to cover it all.

Tonight, we have a new episode to bring to you. We recently watched the new Nicholas Cage movie, Renfield where our favorite eccentric actor plays our favorite evil vampire, Dracula. But, the focus of the film, as the title implies, is on Nicholas Hoult's Renfield, Dracula's tortured servant and familiar. This horror-comedy is now available to stream on Peacock...and that's just what we did. But, What did we think? Tune in and find out!

We've all finally seen the latest Guardians of the Galaxy movie so, tonight, we're going to be taking a look at the entire Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. We go over the cast, the characters, the music, James Gunn as director and we rank them in the order we like best. Listen in and find out what we thought.

May is behind us now and so ends our month long series of looking at the bad 4th movie in a film franchise but, man, did we save the worst for last. For your listening pleasure, we present to you our look at Transformers: Age Of Extinction.

Here for your listening pleasure is 3GD's own Marc Macrina with the first of many short, weekly looks at one of his favorite cult cinema films. Kicking it all off, Marc brings you 1968's Targets.

This week we're continuing our look at the 4th entry in a film franchise that we cleverly call "May The FOURS Be With You"! This week, we're looking at the 4th movie in the wildly popular Paranormal Activity franchise, cleverly titled Paranormal Activity 4! It's' more of the same old found footage "Let's try and catch the demonic entity in our house on video" gimmick that the entire series has been based on this far and, well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But, what did we all think of it? You'll just have to tune in and find out!

Just when you thought that it couldn't get any worse than the horrible X-Men: Last Stand, Wolverine comes along and says "Hold my (Canadian) beer!" and not only manages to derail any further X-men films for quite a while, it also derailed any future X-Men Origins sequels! Tune in and find out what we thought of it.

It's that time of year again...the month of May brings back that special time when we take a look at the (usually) bad 4th entry in a film franchise. To kick it all off this year, we're looking at Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol! Everyone's Favorite law-enforcing losers have to train a group of citizen volunteers to help in the fight against crime. Does hilarity ensue? Tune in to find out what we all thought!

Space is a harsh mistress...cold and unfeeling and will kill if you're not careful. But, what do you do when there's a psychotic entity on board your ship who also wants you dead? Stanley Kubric's 2001 is still considered a masterpiece of sci-fi cinema yet, it was also criticized for being overly cerebral and slow-paced. However, this week we look at another sci-fi movie where there is a killer entity hell-bent on taking out the crew of a space ship one by one. This movie is not slow paced, it's not too cerebral but what it has going for it is lots of fun!

Tonight we're looking at the movie that tells the story of a young white kid who can rhyme like no other, a kid just trying to make his way in this cold, unfeeling world, a kid just looking for someone to love him for who he really is and for a chance to prove himself. Is it the movie you're thinking of? Think again!!!

They say Idle Hands are the devil's playground, it's also the name of 1999 horror comedy film! Listen in as we talk about it in our latest episode...or do we? "The Master will not approve. It'll be dark soon, there's no way out of here!"

Once upon a time, a movie was released that touched the hearts of many. It was the tale of a lonely being from another world who, when separated from his his own kind, is befriended by a young boy who takes him in, introduces him to his family and ultimately has to protect him from those who wish to harm him all while trying to return him to his own kind!

This week, we're joined by our good friend (and friend of the show) Josh Dahlin who asked us to take a look at these two movies as part of our "VERSUS" series! Both films were produced from the same studio with a VERY limited budget. The acting is questionable, the special effects are anything but special and the scripts were probably pounded out in one booze-fueled Saturday afternoon. Both films are direct-to-video bargain bin features that, if you're in the mood, are one way to kill a few hours (and brain cells!) They're cheesy, they're laughable, they put the horrible in horror but, which one comes out on top, Sharkenstein or Sharkula?

This week, we're looking at John Carpenter's In The Mouth Of Madness...the perfect movie to wrap up our In The March Of Madness series! This film sees insurance investigator, John Trent (played by Sam Neil) as he investigates the disappearance of horror author Sutter Caine...a writer who has the ability to bring what he writes about to life...as the lines between truth and fiction, fantasy and reality begin to blur, Trent begins to lose his grip on his own sanity!

In The March Of Madness month continues as, this week, we're taking a looking into the sillier side of insanity as we talk about the 1996 Ben Still directed film, The Cable Guy. Starring Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick, it follows the story of Carrey's titular cable installer as he becomes obsessed with Broderick's character, nearly driving him to the brink of insanity!

This week, we continue to look at movies to drive you mad as our "In The March Of Madness" series continues with Session 9. This film from 2001 follows the story of a crew of asbestos remediators who agree to clean up an abandoned asylum but discover more than they bargained for.

The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, follows the story of Jack and his family as they find themselves in a large Colorado hotel for the winter as Jack has recently taken on the job of caretaker for the off-season. Jack thinks it'll give him time to write the great American novel but, otherworldly forces seem to be at play in the hotel and Jack slowly begins to unravel putting his family in jeopardy!

Army Of Darkness, Medieval Dead, Evil Dead III, whatever you call it, it's still an amazing wrap-up to our Fantasy February series and Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy. A mash-up of horror, slap-stick comedy and medieval mayhem, this film finds our hero, Ash William (perfectly played by the incomparable Bruce Campbell) transported to the past (the year 1300 to be exact) where he is determined to be the "chosen one" who can deliver Arthur and his people from an army of Deadites while all he wants is to find his way back home!

In this episode, we're brining you the latest in our Fantasy February series...this week is a special week for, not only are we looking at a classic mythological movie with fantastic stop-motion FX by Ray Harryhausen, we're pitting it agains it's 2010 CGI remake! It's our latest in our VS series as well, as we bring you The Clash of The Clash OF The Titans!!!

Fantasy February continues as, this week, we take a look at the 1988 film Willow. Directed by Ron Howard and produced by George Lucas and based on his story, it tells the tale of Willow who, after his family finds an abandoned baby, he is charged with bringing her back to her people. Along the way, he discovers that the child is the chosen one who is destined by birth to bring an end to the evil queen Bavmorda's reign! Find out what we all thought of the film and it's sequel series on Disney+!

Fantasy February begins with the king of the sword and sorcery movies...1982's Conan The Barbarian. This fantasy epic stars Arnold Schwartzenegger in the role he seemed destined to play! After being orphaned by an invading hoard, Conan becomes a slave who, once freed, seeks revenge against James Earl Jones' Thulsa Doom and his snake worshiping cult!

Tito wraps up his month of great movies for us to talk about by picking the 2010 film, UNSTOPPABLE. Expertly directed by Tony Scott and starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine as a veteran and rookie train operators who find themselves the only ones able to stop an unmanned runaway train hauling dangerous chemicals through densely populated western Pennsylvania!

Tito brings to us yet another cinematic knock-out. This week, he has us go toe to toe with 1992's Gladiator. Do not confuse this film with the Russell Crow movie of the same name. Instead, starring Cuba Gooding Jr, James Marshall, Robert Logia and Brian Dennehy, this film is about a high school student who has to fight to survive on the mean streets of the south side of Chicago and then has to fight for his life and honor when he gets mixed up in an illegal underground boxing syndicate!

This week we also have a new ESCAPE POD episode where our own Marc Macrina along with friend of the show, Dean Calusdian have put together another double-feature of fantastic, futuristic films for you all! This time, on the marquee, it's Dark Star and Galaxy of Terror!!!
