Real Estate, Fitness, and the Courage of Taking Risks!
Jon and Jamie talk with Serial Entrepreneur Scott Marcus about real estate, fitness, and the courage of taking risks! As a principal in the real estate development firm of RSM Development & Management, L.L.C. in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, his primary responsibilities include the acquisition, development and first party property management of multi-family, office, medical office and industrial properties in the Metropolitan Detroit area. Since forming the firm fifteen years ago, RSM has acquired and/or developed a portfolio totaling over one million square feet and 2,500 apartment units with a market value of over $250M. Mr. Marcus is a graduate of the University of Michigan (B.G.S.) and Wayne State University Law School (J.D.) and is a Member of the State Bar of Michigan, State Bar of Arizona, and is a licensed Michigan Real Estate Broker. He is an active Member of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Real Estate Committee and Vice-President of ORT Michigan. Additionally, Mr. Marcus is a member of the Office Development I NAIOP Forum and has participated in the last seven National NAIOP events and received the NAIOP Developing Leaders Award in 2007. In 2013, Scott was elected "40 Under 40" by Crain's Detroit Business. Following a year of practicing real estate law at the firm of Maddin Hauser, P.C. (Southfield, Michigan) and at the age of 26, Mr. Marcus joined Richard A. Shapack to form RSM Development and Management in September 2000. With Mr. Shapack continuing to concentrate on his practice of tax and real estate law, Mr. Marcus has been primarily responsible for the acquisition, development, financing and management of the RSM portfolio. In an effort to expand the RSM portfolio, Mr. Marcus formed a joint-venture partnership with the Jacobson Brothers in 2007 to form DHSS Management, LLC ("DHSS"). DHSS now owns and manages over 2,500 apartment units within the Metropolitan Detroit area spread across 8 communities. To date, the DHSS portfolio is valued over $200M. In addition to his real estate business, Mr. Marcus is a principal of Orange Theory Fitness (OTF) – Michigan as Area Developer of the State of Michigan. OTF is a group interval fitness franchise with over 650 locations in seven (7) countries. To date, Mr. Marcus owns four (4) OTF studios in Michigan (Birmingham, Troy, Farmington Hills and Northville), one (1) in Columbus, Ohio and, as Area Developer for the State of Michigan, has sold and opened an additional seven (7) locations in Michigan. Brian Granader's first yoga class came during a time in his life when he was working seven days a week as a residential Realtor. He was in the top 1% of all Realtors in the Century 21 System and in the top 1.5% of the Realtors locally. Brian was helping a lot of people purchase and sell homes and felt like he was killing himself without knowing how to stop. After practicing yoga for about a year, he took a teacher training program to deepen his practice and knowledge. Brian enjoyed it so much, he began teaching part time and selling real estate full time. One day Brian asked himself, "If I had only six months left to live would I rather be a Realtor or a Yoga instructor?" That day he decided to teach yoga full time and transition out of real estate …. he never looked back! Brian has owned Red Lotus Yoga since 2003 and has been teaching classes, leading teacher training programs, retreats, workshops. He regularly gives talks and lead mindfulness classes at major corporations. Brian's wife, Kate, and he run Red Lotus Yoga while caring for their daughter, who was born in 2010. They have a full life and if he asked himself today, the same question he asked in 2002, his answer is still, to be a Yoga Teacher…and he'd add husband and father too. Mindset Tips on Success - Resilience, Resourcefulness, and Relentlessness
Jon and Simon Thomas talk with Magie Cook, CEO, Keynote Speaker & Author, MC Enterprises, LLC. They discuss the mindset to adapt for a successful business. Magie bases her success on three concepts: resilience, resourcefulness and relentlessness. She starts with resourcefulness because she realized early on that all of the resources she needed were within her. Magie, whose birth name is Magdalena De La Cruz Cook Garcia, is a Latino businesswoman who was born in an orphanage in Mexico. She grew up in poverty along with 68 brothers and sisters. She missed her opportunity to play basketball for the Mexican National team because she broke her collarbone. Shortly after she immigrated to the US on a basketball scholarship at the University of Charleston. After obtaining her college degree, and not being able to find a job, Magie became homeless and lived on the streets. When someone recognized her, she was given a place to stay. A few weeks later, she entered a Fresh Salsa competition for the State of West Virginia and won unanimously. At this event, she was given $800 to start her business. Not knowing anything about business and with perseverance, she created Maggie's All-Natural Fresh Salsa's & Dips, a company that grew into a multi-million-dollar business within 4 years and distributed products across 38 states to major supermarkets such as Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Whole Foods and many more. At the height of her success in 2015, Maggie's Salsa sold to Campbell's Soup. Shortly after, she went back to Mexico and rescued 31 orphaned children from a drug cartel. As a CEO, Magie shares her unconventional and unique techniques that made her super successful in life and in business. She was given a Nobel Entrepreneurial Prize in Mexico, the Small Business Administration gave her the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the University of Charleston Awarded her into the Hall of Fame, and West Virginia inducted her into their Generation Next, 40 under 40. Magie is a board member of AFIRE Pinellas, an organization that provides educational scholarships to kids with disabilities. Avec earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Public Accounting from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México. Additionally, she earned her Master in Business Administration with Distinction from the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business.
