S2 Ep 45Ep.45-Jackie Scully-Diary Entry 4-Leading a Student Trip to Germany
In this episode I share about my experience leading a student trip to Germany from March 23rd-March 31st, 2023. This was my first time leading an international student trip. This was a life changing experience and something that will stay with me my whole life. On this trip we visited the following cities/towns: Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Bamberg, Nuremberg, and Munich. Some of the historical sites include: Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag (German parliament), Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Leipzig walking tour, Dresden walking tour, Museum of Military History in Dresden, Bamberg walking tour, Dachau Concentration Camp & Memorial, Marienplatz in Munich, Munich walking tour, BMW Headquarters, and. Olympiapark (1972 Olympics). I left my students with this message: "To feel history is powerful and I think we did just that on this trip." Sharing laughter and tears with my students will stay with me forever.

He is originally from America and found a wonderful wife and life in Colombia. He shares Colombia is not what you see in the news but it is a vibrant and beautiful country. His latest project is creating a Spanglish group where Spanish and English speakers can engage and learn from one another through social events. I interviewed Dr. Colleen Kelley who is a Chemistry Instructor and Creator/Founder of Kids' Chemical Solutions. Her program consists of a series of comic books where characters represent different chemicals. Colleen is in her research phase and working with 4th graders to see how they take to this new way of learning chemistry. She says "When the class is over they do not want to stop!" The kids are loving chemistry and feel great success in their understanding of what is commonly known as one of the most difficult subjects. Kids' brains are ripe for learning this content. Her goal is to make this program accessible for all to create a more equitable education system. She shares a startling statistic that shows this truly is a civil rights issue. Lorraine left teaching because she knew she had more to do to empower kids. She is working to build leadership in our youth through peer mentoring. A quote that stood out to me that was said by one of her students was "You know, Ms. Connell, we have always been wearing masks." There is so much truth and power in that statement. I interviewed Rachel and Rebecca, who are both former refugees and former students of Patsy Koay (a good friend and guest who was on both Ep.11 and Ep.30 in Season 1). Rachel and Rebecca are originally from Myanmar and came to Malaysia for refuge. Patsy was their teacher and inspiration for both of them to go into education. Rachel is a Pre-K Art Teacher and Rebecca is a Teacher at the Early Childhood Creative Writing Center in Texas. They talk about resilience, passion for helping others, and how they have stayed connected with Patsy over the years. This is a continuation of the ripple effect. There is so much heart and joy in this story!

I interviewed my former student, Lauren DePiero, who is now a middle school and high school English Teacher. She is also an Assistant Varsity Swim Coach at her school. She was an exemplary student and now is a passionate and courageous educator. Lauren started her teaching career at the height of the pandemic. She was thrown into a hybrid teaching model while she was a student teacher, and started her first contract position in that same mode. She speaks highly about being an educator while also realizing what we can fix in education. She is the type of educator we want to keep in the field. I am so honored to share her story with all of you. I love Gen Z educators!

She is passionate about mental health, women’s health, and self-advocacy. She spent the last 10 years working in public education as a high school teacher, teaching an array of courses. From 2015 to 2022, she was diagnosed with 9 different chronic illnesses. Through her healing journey and experiences in public education, she realized there was a need for more support services within and outside of the community. She talks about having to make the difficult decision to leave education, but now she wants to give back to teachers and others in her community through her coaching services. I interviewed Lauren Lumm, a former teacher who worked in the NYC school district, worked as a teacher in Maine, and is now working for Outschool. She is an activist who cares about social justice in education, and making sure that all voices and perspectives are represented in the curriculum. She went to Washington D.C. for a “Save Our Schools” and “Occupy the DOE” protest with letters from her students about how they felt about test prep. Lauren went from teaching in a very progressive school in Brooklyn, and then moved to Maine and had a completely different experience. She used the push back she received in her school to propel her to get out of the classroom and now work with students online teaching civics. A couple of quotes that stood out to me and represent Lauren and her work: “I want to be an advocate of the truth." and “You have to get comfortable with getting uncomfortable.” This is a powerful conversation about teachers standing up for themselves and speaking their minds. I interviewed Dr. J. Rodriguez, Ph.D., who is a Communications Professor at California State University in Long Beach. He is a master educator and recognized expert in message development for ethical team building, diverse leadership presence, and inclusive audience engagement. He has been coaching on the art and science of communication for 20+ years. He was featured on a Tedx Talk called “The Power of Solidarity in the Moments of Life.” The time when he was an instructional aide in an elementary classroom was the moment he learned that he had a love for teaching. I interviewed Jackie Turnwald, a former award-winning educator, Humancentric Certified DEI Consultant, speaker, political organizer + activist, focused on LGBTQIA+ equity and inclusion and anti-racism. Jackie shares their intimate story of what brought them into education, teaching in South Korea, building a culturally responsive curriculum, and transitioning out of the classroom to become a DEI Consultant. Jackie's mission is to disrupt the status quo and create real DEI in the workplace and in schools. We discuss trauma amongst teachers and students, teaching students with appropriate curriculum, the difference between CRT-Critical Race Theory and CRT-Culturally Responsive Teaching, and the dire situation of the American education system. One quote that stood out amongst many- “When we personalize our stories and people learn more about us, we close the gap of fear and anger.” Jackie is a brilliant mind, compassionate activist, and ready to transform the workplace and educational system. I interviewed Laurie Sjostrom, a former VIP Kid teacher (Chinese educational platform), and a current Anxiety Management Coach for parents. Laurie shares her intimate story of struggling with her own illness at the same time her daughter was diagnosed with severe scoliosis, and how this led her to become a VIP Kid teacher and starting her own business. The focus of this episode has a slight twist with an emphasis on the importance of the parent-teacher relationship, which is a topic that is very important to me. Laurie even asks me to share my own perspective as a teacher. I felt a complete heart connection in this interview. Karl shares about his background growing up on the Big Island-Hawaii in a sugar plantation community and how difficult it was for him to navigate the college process since there was this expectation to work on the plantation. He shares many wonderful ideas about diversity, bringing people together, work/life balance for both teachers and students, and how we need to do more to better our overall mental health.
