Ep 811Chase Kreitler on His Vision for Pitt, Learning From Eddie Reese & Dave Durden
Chase Kreitler has had an amazing 2022, and we're just 5 months in. His Cal team won an NCAA title, he and his wife celebrated the birth of their first child, and this spring he was named the new Head Coach at Pitt. Somehow he still made time to talk with SwimSwam about all of it. Many people may remember that he took paternity leave this winter before the birth of his son, JD. That's a unique move in an industry where some coaches barely take any time off. Chase has no regrets and that kind of life balance is an important example in our sport, where there is no off-season. Luckily Chase had the support of Cal head coach Dave Durden, just one of the many coaches he's worked with in his impressive career so far. From Peter Linn at Eastern Michigan to Eddie Reese at Texas, Tracy Slusser and Greg Meehan at Stanford, and most recently Durden at Cal, Chase has worked with some of the best. He talks about what each one has taught him as he steps into his first head coaching role. He talked about his vision at Pitt and why it was an opportunity he didn't want to pass up. This is a great chance to learn from one of the brightest young coaches in the sport. Ep 786Holly Barratt on 6-Month Swim Trip, PBs at Age 34, and Quitting for 5 Years in her Teens
We sat down with Holly Barratt (recorded January 27), the Aussie worlds medalist who (at the time) hadn't been home to Perth in 6 months. When she left Australia in September for ISL season 3, she stayed abroad for the world cup circuit, ISL play-offs, SC world champs, and even Christmas in Sweden. She then returned to Australia, but with strict lockdown codes in Perth, stayed in Melbourne where she trained with Craig Jackson and his squad at Melbourne Vicentre Club. However, Holly's backstory is perhaps more interesting then her present 6+ month time on the road. She swam competitively as an age-grouper, but not knowing how she could make the leap to international competition, quit from age 18-23. Once she started coaching swimming at age 23 (2014), she got the itch to compete again and had a full revival of her career. She went on to win 3 medals at the 2015 World University Games and medal at the successive LCM world championships, SCM world championships, and Commonwealth Games. She's still going PBs now at age 34 and plans to retire at the end of 2022. Ep 781Associate Head Coach Tyler Fenwick Shares UVA Sets Leading into NCAAs
SwimSwam caught up with Tyler Fenwick, Associate Head Coach at University of Virginia, the week before the UVA Women defend their NCAA title in Atlanta, GA. In this discussion, Fenwick touches on some recent sets and gives us an open look at the training set up at UVA but this is a big picture conversation on coaching. Tyler's been coaching for almost 20 years all across the country. At one point I joke with him that he made distance coaching cool but these days he's hesitant to call himself a distance coach. He has learned so much over nearly 2 decades on deck with some of the best minds in the sport but he is still expanding his coaching game. We cover all that and more!! We sat down with Tokyo Olympic medalist Bruno Fratus while he was in Marseille shooting with his suit partner, arena.
