In a razor-thin battle with the Cali Condors that saw the clubs trade the lead back and forth during the final day of competition, Energy Standard clinched the Season 3 ISL championship title thanks to the efforts of Ben Proud and Adam Barrett in the men’s butterfly skins. Energy Standard’s Sarah Sjostrom finished as the leading scorer in the final with 61 points, followed closely by Fink (59.5) and Cali’s Hali Flickinger (51.0). We sat down with two-time Olympic medalist and Team Speedo athlete Hali Flickinger. This Cali Condors swim star has been busy since Tokyo. We sat down with Olympic bronze medalist in the 100 fly, Noe Ponti. The butterfly specialist is fresh off of breaking 4 new Swiss records at the Swiss SC championships. In other words, she's an adult, with her past three Olympic experiences in her rear view mirror. However, there's something about time that brings things into focus. While competing on day 2 of the final FINA World Cup stop in Kazan, multi-Olympic medalist Chalmers blasted a time of 44.84 to not only stand atop the podium here but also stand atop the list of fastest men ever in the event. His time overtakes the previous storied World Record of 44.94, a time Frenchman Amaury Leveaux put on the books over a decade ago in 2008. Since then, many have come close, including Russia’s Vlad Morozov who hit 44.95 in 2018 but the record stood tall…until tonight. We sat down with Jim Bolster, the head coach for the Columbia men's team (who we recently filmed a Practice + Pancakes with) who is in his 38th season at the helm. Bolster boasts a very athletic background, being 1 of 14 and growing up with access to the Princeton athletic facilities. He was a 4-time letter athlete in swimming, soccer, and lacrosse at Denison University, winning an NCAA DIII title in the 200 fly and going to the NCAA tournament in soccer. He then started competing in triathlons, where he had success for 20+ years as a masters competitor. We sat down with 3x Olympic champion from Tokyo, Kaylee McKeown. We sat down with Olympic champion and Breaststroke queen, Lilly King, to discuss the brand new pool in her hometown of Evansville, Indiana and her swimming in the last couple of months. King walks us through her time in ISL this season and how she got back into the swing of racing coming off of the Olympics, as well as what her "off-season" looked like and why she like to stay in the water for the majority of that time. King also describes her experience at the 2020 Olympic Games, where she went into the meet as the defending Olympic champion in the 100 breast and heavy favorite to win gold. King goes into what she felt after winning bronze in that race, then coming off of the surprise loss and earning silver in the 200, her first Olympic medal in that event. After earning a spot in the play-offs, Iron's head coach Luka Gabrilo and skins champion Thom de Boer sat down to field questions about the match. de Boer delved into his approach to the freestyle skins race, which he has now won on 3 out of 3 occasions this season, even speaking to his training and how he does a lot of lactate swims in normal training. Coach Luka explains that their men's B 400 free relay, which went slower than the DC Trident-winning women's A 400 free relay, was a necessary piece of their overall match success. Since Iron was short on sprinters, they chose to put non-freestyle specialists in the relay in order to save swimmers like Luiz Altamir Melo who could score significant points in the 400 free. I thought Tokyo and Iron looked primed to move through the play-in match smoothly, but Braden had quickly pointed out that DC was a strong contender not to be overlooked. Flash forward to today. For the first time in the history of the ISL, jackpot points decided the winner of Match 8, favoring Energy Standard over the London Roar. If the jackpot points are removed then the London Roar would have actually beaten Energy Standard by the narrow margin of 11.5 points. Neither team received enough penalty deductions to sway the outcome, and their checkpoint points nearly even out. Until Match 8, jackpot points had only affected the outcome of Match MVPs, but now their value to overall team standings is on display. A point brought up by Barry is that every time 4 or more swimmers get jackpotted, the winner of the race is now up 19 points, more than 2 individual wins. These point swings could affect how a team builds its roster, preferring big stars to a team with depth. The Cali Condors have done it again with their third match win of the season, but it didn’t go down without a good fight. The Titans entered day two of match seven with the narrow lead over the Condors. Throughout the match, Toronto lost their lead to Cali but re-gained it, twice, including right before the skins events where the Condors soared over the Titans to clinch the match win. Meanwhile, Iron was able to find extra leverage over the NY Breakers to increase their chances of qualifying top-6 into the semi-finals.
