Ep 4444 Why You Need a Routine to Perform at Your Best with Raelei Thornton

Raelei runs her own Marketing Agency called Misfits Marketing, which brings her all over the United States helping her clients get the most out of their brand messaging. She's created a routine that allows her to perform at her best regardless of where she is, even if that means bringing a mini fridge on the road with her on her work trips! This was a very inspiring conversation that took us in so many directions, including what it's like to travel on your own, how to set up a support system at home (she's got a husband and 3 little ones to take of while she's away too!), and the joys of doing things alone when you travel. Find Raelei @redneckasian9 on YouTube and Instagram, and give her a follow to find out more. As always, if you spend a lot of time away from home, we hope you're not only surviving, but thriving, even when you're out of your element! #travel #worklifebalance #supportsystem #marketing #entrepreneur #businessowner #roadcoach

Ep 43Ep 43 Brad Klyn Why Nutrition is Key on the Road

Our guest today is Brad Klyn, who has worked in medical device sales since 2002 (23 years!), and currently at Intuitive Surgical where he sells and educates clinicians the DaVinci Surgical Robot for half of Canada. Before that, he spent over 20 years at Pentax Medical selling flexible endoscopy solutions for the gastroenterology market. Brad spends 100+ nights on the road each year, and he shares his tactics for staying in balance. Key takeaways include the following: 1. Bring your activities with you. Brad has an inflatable paddle board, and often brings his hockey gear of golf clubs on trips with him. When you get to the point where you have status on an airline, most oversize baggage is free to check into a flight. 2. Move more. Brad doesn't do gyms on the road, but he ensures he's always doing a bodyweight workout to start the day. Air squats, jump squats, pushup variations, and shadow boxing can be done anywhere, including your hotel room before you start work for the day. 3. Nutrition is the key to his balance and longevity. Like me, Brad packs his powdered nutrition and shaker cup with enough supplies for breakfast each day, although he often won't eat 3 meals per day. Brad explains that evolution didn't have humans eating nearly as much society dictates we do today, so why overfeed yourself when you're on the road? Brad takes nutrition to the next level by now packing a compact blender in his carry-on to ensure he can blend a good smoothie every day no matter where his travels take us. 4. Take advantage of the locals and find out what's the best thing to do in each location, because you may never be back to explore. Even better, do activities with the local community to level-up your experience. Brad reminds us that in 20 years, we'll never remember the work we did on these trips, but we will remember the community and the exploration, which is what humans thrive on. This interview was engaging and insightful, and we can all learn a lot from Brad's travel protocol. Keep it simple, have high standards for nutrition and movement, and remember that loneliness doesn't have to be a prerequisite for work travel. As always, if you spend a lot of your life on the road, we're here to help you not only survive, but thrive, even when you're out of your element! #travel #nutrition #smoothie #explore #community #local #movement #fitness #worklifebalance #roadtrip #coach

In episode 42, we chat with Chelsea McLeod, a US expat living in Sydney Australia, who became a self-proclaimed 'corporate dropout' to start a fitness and nutrition coaching business. She now coaches high-level C-suite executives on how to change their diet to optimize hormone production and balance while leading extremely busy lives that involve heavy travel schedules. Expect to learn Chelsea's proven systems, go-to nutrition protocols for the extensive traveler, and advice she has for those who may want more balance and energy in their lives without completely changing everything they do. This conversation was both educational and entertaining, and we thank Chelsea for taking the time to educate our listeners on some simple but effective ways to feel better and thrive, even when they are out of their element! Ep 4141 All About Balance with Matt Van de Ven

In this episode, I talk to Matt Van de Ven, Canada head at a surgical medical device manufacturer who spends 80-100 nights on the road each year. His travel has evolved from longer trips to what he calls 'business critical', meaning he's only away when it's critical to accomplish a business objective that he must be present for. This evolution in travel for only what he considers essential has allowed him to create more balance at home for his marriage and family life, and it's made him focus on what's truly important for professionals who want to advance their career but also have a thriving home life with fruitful relationships. To Matt, it's all about balance. Location selection for his residence being only 14 minutes via taxi was paramount to achieving balance in his latest professional role. Being so close to Pearson International Airport allows him to leave his house as late as possible for every trip and arrive home as soon as 20 minutes after his plane hits the runway. This, in his opinion, has enabled him to be a better father and husband despite the demands on his time from all over Canada. As for advice, he drove home the fact that balance is key, and being thoughtful about what you want out of your career and life outside your career is imperative to achieving fulfillment. He periodically reevaluates his 'why', both personally and with his wife, to ensure they are still working towards the ultimate goal for their families while juggling busy careers and extensive travel. This was both educational and entertaining, and I learned a lot about how creating boundaries can help maintain balance for those of us who travel a lot for work. As always, if you're like us and spend a lot of time away from home, we hope you are not only surviving, but thriving, even when you are out of your element!

Ep 4040 Laura Helen Burn the Boats and Live on the Road

In our first ever interview episode, Laura Helen tells us how she and her husband took their then- 4- and 7-year-olds on the road permanently 7 years ago and have never looked back. Currently living in Spain, the family has become perpetual nomads and serial entrepreneurs, learning how to live out of nothing more than a carry-on suitcase and a desire to fully experience life. We talk education, and how the standard system in our western world is inferior to the true education you get from a passionate deep dive into the experiential learning provided by travel. We talk about the struggles of financial uncertainty, and the universe aligning for your success when you 'burn the boats' and go all in on what you want. Laura and her family are an inspiration to anyone who travels a lot, or yearns to travel more, and her practical advice and insights are things you don't want to miss! Visit the Helen family online at www.foreverfamilyforeverfree.com or check out their YouTube, Facebook and Instagram profiles @ForeverFamilyForeverFree everywhere. Special thank you to Laura Helen for taking the time to share her family's story, and if you are like us and live away from 'home', we hope you're not only surviving, but thriving, even when you're out of your element!

Ep 3939 Does Collagen Help?

In this episode I look at a systematic review of collagen peptide supplementation to see its effects on joint pain, body composition, post-workout recovery and muscle soreness. As it turns out, collagen contains especially high amounts of the amino acid hydroxyproline, a semi-essential amino acid that's not found in your other protein supplements. Semi-essential means our bodies can manufacture this amino acid, but at great cost - so if you're working out to gain strength and/or speed, you could be wasting a lot of your protein just repairing joints and tendons, rather than building muscle. From the research contained in this systematic review, I'll be increasing my collagen supplementation to 15g daily from my usual 10g. As always, if you live your life on the road, I hope you're not only surviving, but thriving, even when you're out of your element!

Ep 3838 BOOST Your Testosterone with the Road Coach and Fight Lab Fitness

Introducing the newest supplement proven to increase your testosterone levels my fellow road warriors! Fight Lab Fitness has released Alpha Test Surge, packed with a 400mg dose of Tongkat Ali, or Longjack, clinically proven in multiple randomized clinical trials to increase serum testosterone levels naturally. As we age, our testosterone levels drop, and aside from taking testosterone replacement therapy, men have few options to get these levels back up to where they were when we were 20. Tongkat ali is a natural herb that gets us back to where we need to be. This supplement also contains zinc, L-arginine, ginseng, maca, and a host of other nutrients to improve performance, libido, energy levels, sleep, mood, and lower inflammation in the body. When I discovered the proven benefits of tongkat ali (check out previous episodes for all the clinical data), I went on a mission to find a supplement that I could start taking. The problem was, it was either impossible to find or impossibly expensive. So I got the bright idea to find my own formula and give everyone access to it - hence the creation of Fight Lab Fitness and Alpha Test Surge - available on Amazon this week in Canada, United States, and Mexico!

Ep 3737 Newest Research on NAD, Protein, and Vitamin D

In episode 37 I talk about the newest research I've read on NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), NR (nicotinamide riboside), NAD, and vitamin B3 (niacin versus niacinamide). I've recently switched from NMN to Niacinamide due to cost savings, as it is a similar precursor to NAD. I also discuss what NAD is (it's the anti-aging molecule), what it does in our bodies (ATP production, DNA repair, etc.), and how our NAD level decline with age. Switching from NMN to B3 supplementation has similar effects on increasing NAD levels while saving me 90% on my cost to supplement. We then go over my switch from protein powders to essential amino acid powders, the benefits, cost, and packaging savings, and why I've had to switch back recently. Lastly, I discuss why you should be taking your vitamin D via an oil spray or drop sublingually (beneath your tongue) rather than adding it to meals or taking capsules. As the research grows, we all grow! I hope this episode makes you healthier and wiser, and if you live on the road like me, I hope you're not only surviving, but thriving, even when you're out of your element!

Ep 3636 The CHEAPEST Way to Level Up Your Nutrition TODAY

With the cost of living increasing drastically over the past year and a half, I'm finding it harder and harder to find the extra money to invest in top quality supplements and the best nutrition, especially when I'm constantly travelling and incurring expenses related to hotels, restaurant meals, and gas and groceries. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. Even when we have our companies cover our travel expenses, there is a delay in our expenditures and reimbursements, so money can easily get tight and we have to make sacrifices in certain areas of our lives. With in increasing cost of borrowing money with the highest interest rates I've seen in my lifetime, many people's daily cost of living has almost doubled, especially if your mortgage is variable or if you rent your home. The cost of food has skyrocketed, as has the cost of gas to get around. Everyone is feeling the pinch, and it's hard to decide where and what to cut out to weather this storm most effectively. In that light, I created an episode on the most cost-effective supplements and ways to improve your baseline nutrition without breaking the bank. What would I choose if I had limited budget to get the most out of my money for improving my overall health and nutrition? The first is a high quality multivitamin. I currently take Progressive Nutrition's Healthy Active Men's Multi formula. It's cost-effective, well-rounded, not too heavy on any specific nutrients, and consistently manufactured. There are other options out there, but I've tried a lot of them, and I keep coming back to Progressive's Multi Active Men. I only take 2 of the 3 recommended capsules daily to keep costs down, and because I track my nutrition pretty closely and don't need the full dose on the bottle. Secondly, fish oil is of supreme importance in today's society. Our diets are heavily skewed towards Omega-6, and everyone should be supplementing with Omega-3 daily. I currently use the Life Brand Triple Strength Omega-3 from Shoppers Drug Mart, as it's the most cost-effective, highest dose Omega-3 on the market in my area. For those outside of Canada, any local drug store (Walgreens, etc.) should have a house-brand fish oil that is high in Omega-3 fatty acids while also being cost-effective. My current supplement costs me less than 50 cents per day. Lastly, creatine monohydrate is the third most important supplement. It is the most widely studied, safest, cheapest, most beneficial supplement you can take. And it's not just for weight-lifters or athletes. Creatine helps everyone with increased energy via the reuse of ATP once it becomes ADP. Adenosine triphosphate is created by the mitochondria of each cell, and once used for energy it loses a phosphate, become adenosine diphosphate. Creatine can use ADP to create a second reaction from the same molecule, and without creatine that molecule becomes useless to you. You can get creatine from meat, but it's impossible to maximize your creatine storage in muscle on meat alone - you won't be able to consume enough each day. You don't need a fancy capsule or digestible form of creatine - simply monohydrate powder in it's cheapest bulk form is just as good. Your stomach acid will not break down creatine quickly enough to warrant paying more for marketing garbage from companies claiming you get more into your intestines with their patented formulae. It's simply not true. In the tail end of the episode I go over the importance of getting more protein earlier in the day, before you move to simple carbs, fried food, and other processed junk. I also discuss tracking your macros with MyFitnessPal and how I go about that on a daily basis when travelling. For all you road warriors out there, I hope you're not only surviving, but thriving, even when you're out of your element!

Ep 3535 When the Stomach Flu Strikes!

In episode 35, I talk about how I got absolutely DESTROYED by the stomach flu this week, forcing me to take some time off of the podcast ahead of a major gastroenterology conference in Canada called CDDW (Canadian Digestive Diseases Week). After I finally recovered, I thought 'not only does this affect a lot of people this time of year, but most people don't know exactly what happens or why' when it comes to gastro bugs, or what is medically termed gastroenteritis. Essentially, a virus, bacteria, or parasite invades our GI tract and causes inflammation, or the irritation of our gut cells. Anything ending in 'itis' means inflammation or inflammatory response. The most common virus causing the stomach flu (the one that makes uncontrollable spewing liquids come out both ends for 12-24 hours!) is the norovirus. I bring up an image of the small intestinal villi, or finger-like projections that help digest our food. In gastroenteritis, these villi get swollen and red, and the enzymes that are normally present get stripped away, making literally anything we consume undigestible for a period of time. As we heal, and the cells return to normal, we can begin digesting the easier to break down foods, such as simple sugars and carbohydrates, moving on to more complex foods like starches, dairy, meats, etc. a day or two later. Interestingly, the more complex enzymes like lactase and amylase are higher up on the villi, so they take the longest to return to normal levels. Ep 3434 Drastically Improve Your Energy Levels on the Road

In this episode, I explain the benefits of cardio exercise and cardiovascular fitness for not only your general health and wellbeing, but overall cognitive performance and energy levels. Believe it or not, regular cardio increases the number of mitochondria in your cells, providing more baseline energy to your body every day. The mitochondria produce a molecule called ATP, which stands for adenosine triphosphate, which when broken down into ADP, adenosine diphosphate, releases energy that your body can utilize for movement, digestion, and other bodily processes. By regularly doing cardio, your cells realize they need to produce more energy, so they actually make more mitochondria in EACH cell! Pretty incredible response to exercise... Interestingly, taking creatine helps your body reuse ATP once broken down into ADP, helping you get more out of each chemical reaction. This is why EVERYONE should also be supplementing with creatine, to maximize the creatine levels in muscles. Check out our episode on creatine to learn more about the benefits of maximal creatine absorption in the body. For cardio, I prefer running because it can be done anywhere, in almost any weather, with minimal gear. I go over the running gear that I use, how much it costs, and what weather I can use it in. There are other methods of getting cardio in on the road, like hotel gym equipment (rowing machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, etc.), or simply moving more in your hotel room! Anything that gets your heart rate up for 20-30 minutes per day will provide numerous benefits to your health and energy levels. I also go over the benefits to cognitive performance and overall longevity. Bottom line is this: you should be doing some sort of cardio daily, and there is not time like today to get started!
