Keep or Toss? - Thoughts from Kevin

A man in his 90's recently surveyed his garage which was filled with the remnants from an old business, activities and hobbies and memories. LOTS of memories. And at the request of his children, he brought in a dumpster. And after just a few hours of work, it was filled to the brim. This man is my father-in-law. And this is the dumpster. during the course of the day, he was asked many times: Keep or Toss? And clearly that answer was often TOSS. As leaders, we must ask this question of ourselves as well: Should we keep it or toss it? Like the garage, you have to pull things out and ask that question, otherwise things pile up – things that might not be serving you. Check out this week's Remarkable TV episode to see what I mean about the clean-up you need in your leadership life. Tweet it out: You can't keep it all on your list or plate. If you want better results don't just prioritize, take some things off that list. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: If you'd like to receive my daily email and get a short, inspiring message each day, you can learn more and sign up here.

Engagement is a Choice - Thoughts from Kevin

Engagement is a popular topic and something that most organizations are constantly striving for. And it's a worthy goal but the problem is that most organizations are thinking about it all wrong. Listen to this episode to hear how this definition can help you to get better engagement (and commitment) from your team. Tweet it out: Engagement is a choice. As a team member what do you choose? Will or Skill? - Thoughts from Kevin

I meet with a lot of leaders who are frustrated with people on their team who are not doing something at all or who aren't doing something in a certain way. Bringing the Art of Reflection into Your Busy Life with Joseph Badaracco

Do you take the time to downshift, or contemplate, or reflect? Most of us probably want to do that, and where can we find the time? Kevin chats with Joseph Badaracco, John Shad Professor of Business Ethics at Harvard Business School and author. Today, they focus on his latest book, Step Back: How to Bring the Art of Reflection into your Busy Life. Joseph conducted interviews with executives and professionals about reflection – What is it? How do you do it? Where do you find the time? He also studied some classic works to develop principles about the practice. He found that people do find the time to reflect, on their terms. There was little repetition in the method. He suggests that it's OK to pause and find those moments because, in the long run, they are a powerful tool to look at problems differently, help you sort out feelings, prioritize and help both you and your team. Be Careful With This Word - Thoughts from Kevin

Do you remember the TV show "Password"? If you don't know it, you can check it out here. In the game, two teams attempted to win by conveying mystery words to each other using only single-word clues. The word to be conveyed (the "password") was given to one player on each team and was whispered softly to the audience. So today, I am whispering a word that I want you to be careful with. The word is: Safe Now let me be clear: I want you, your families, your teams, your customers, and everyone to be physically healthy. I am not making a political statement, a comment about mask wearing, social/physical distancing, or anything like that. But I also want you, your families, your teams, your customers, and everyone to be mentally and psychologically healthy too. And that's where I think we have to be a bit careful with the word safe. Listen to the Remarkable TV episode to find out more about what I mean when I ask you to be careful with this word. Tweet it out: When we tell people to be safe – we want them to be healthy and protected, but we might be encouraging them to be overly careful or wary. What Are You Attracting? - Thoughts from Kevin

You've likely heard of the Law of Attraction. In short, the basic idea is that our thoughts turn into things eventually. The idea is that we are like human magnets – always attracting something. Not everyone agrees with this principle and the principle often leaves out an important part – the fact that thinking alone, while an important part of the attraction process, leaves out the harder part – action and work. This short episode isn't meant to leave out the action part, but rather to illuminate the first part – either to remind or influence or encourage you. Tweet it out: The law of attraction is real – get your thoughts right, and couple it with action – and you will change your circumstances and results. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: Sign up to receive emails when we release a new Remarkable TV episode here.

Creating Courageous Cultures with Karin Hurt and David Dye

Do you ask for ideas? Not just give permission to share ideas, but really invite new ideas. When Karin Hurt and David Dye worked with organizations, they noticed a pattern. Management thought their teams were not speaking up, and employees felt their ideas were not heard. This is all about culture. Karin and David join Kevin to discuss this pattern and their research leading to their latest book, Courageous Cultures: How to Build Teams of Micro-Innovators, Problem Solvers, and Customer Advocates. They found that across industries and countries, people hold on to negative experiences. So, leaders not only need to create a culture of trust, but they need to be clear of what ideas they want and how those ideas lead to organizational success. Helping Others Apply Your Feedback - Thoughts from Kevin

When we give feedback, it is with the hope that the person on the receiving end will take action on that feedback. But giving feedback isn't a one-and-done action. It's a journey that has many steps along the way. So before we (or should I say 'they') get to action, we must realize the emotions they will go through after hearing the feedback. Once you understand the emotions, there are four steps you can take to help others apply your feedback. Tweet it out: Effective feedback isn't a hit and run – it is a journey. If you want to get to the destination you have to travel with the other person. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: You can view all of the videos in this series here on our YouTube channel. Cracking the Leadership Code with Alain Hunkins

The Industrial Age. Workers came into the factories and were told what jobs to do and how to do them. And for the time, this worked. Alain Hunkins is the author of Cracking the Leadership Code: Three Secrets to Building Strong Leaders. He joins Kevin to talk leadership mindset and observations he has made from firsthand experiences leading leadership trainings for tens of thousands of leaders within hundreds of companies. The Power of the Break - Thoughts from Kevin

Remember recess? Swinging happily on swings, monkeying around on the monkey bars, or zooming down slides... As kids, this was an important part of the day. It gives children the chance to socialize, burn off some much needed energy and re-focus so they are better equipped to learn throughout the day. Not surprisingly, these are all things that we need as adults as well. And it's why breaks are so powerful to our success. When we make the time for breaks throughout the day, we will get more accomplished, have better ideas and generally less stress. And when we're working remotely, we need these breaks even more. In today's episode, I'm laying out the case for breaks! You can watch the video version of this episode at: https://blog.kevineikenberry.com/video/the-power-of-the-break/ Tweet it out: Taking a break isn't for slackers – your productivity will soar and your stress will sink. It's Always Showtime - Thoughts from Kevin

You are leading…and others are watching. This is true when things are going well and when they're not going so well. That's right. That means as a leader, you are on display. And in the words of my friend, Tom Peters, it's always showtime. However, all of this does not mean that I am suggesting that as leaders we have to be "actors" or pretending at our job. Quite the opposite in fact. Check out this episode below to see how leaders can harness the "spotlight"! Tweet it out: As a leader your team is always watching. You ARE leading by example. Understanding Power with Deborah Gruenfeld

How are you using the power you have (for good or evil)? Yes, we all have power just through our relationships between colleagues, family, and friends. Thereby, it can be a bit tricky. According to Deborah Gruenfeld, we need to embrace and own our power, even if we are uncomfortable with it. Deb is a social psychologist and the author of Acting with Power. She shares with Kevin that there are levels of power and it is a responsibility that is yours. Often there are negative connotations with power, however, when you look at it in action, force is rarely used. People want to help you, so you will help them. When you have control over another's outcomes you need to think about the interests you are serving; be the person other people hope you will be. This episode is brought to you by... Creating Customer Value with Rob Markey

We have the tools for accounting principles, and these have remained unchanged for years. Yet we have no real tool to measure customer loyalty, and every bit of cash flow starts with cash from the customer's pocket. Kevin is joined by Rob Markey.
