How to Communicate Effectively with Anyone, Anywhere with Raúl Sánchez and Dan Bullock
While enjoying a late-night snack, Raúl Sánchez and Dan Bullock came to the realization everyone sees the same pattern in the stars. Other places and cultures may label it differently, yet they see the same alignment. They wanted to look at patterns in communication. As organizations become more global, communication becomes that much more important. This holds for public speaking, writing e-mails, or negotiating contracts. Sánchez and Bullock are the authors of How to Communicate Effectively with Anyone, Anywhere. They discuss what is implied in conversation/writing and who is responsible for the messaging. In the end, it isn't about us. As leaders, we are more effective if we use positive language and present the information for more than one sense (ethos, pathos, logos). In this episode, Bullock and Sánchez discuss: Overall principles of effective communication. Global English. Driven Not Drained with Christopher Coultas
It is important to understand what drives you to get out of bed in the morning. It is just as important to understand the motivation of your team. Christopher Coultas, along with his team at Leadership Worth Following, is the author of Driven Not Drained: Discover Your Path to Career Happiness, Effectiveness, and Influence. Chris shares the six components of the DriV model, which was designed to understand the why behind the what. With each component, there are competing priorities. For example, if you score high in productivity, you get your energy by doing things. This can become an issue as you move up the corporate ladder and find that you are delegating more tasks. Chris suggests understanding your drivers and drainers can help you find greater satisfaction in your job. Knowing what drives and drains your team can lead to more productivity and a better bottom line. In this episode, Kevin and Chris discuss: Driven vs. drained. Drained vs. burnout. The DriV model. Solving the Culture Puzzle with Mario Moussa and Derek Newberry
What is the culture of your organization? It's a fair question and can be puzzling. We attribute an unengaged workforce or misalignment of values to the culture. Yet, we seem to fall short of building the culture we want. Mario Moussa and Derek Newberry are the authors of The Culture Puzzle: Harnessing the Forces That Drive Your Organization's Success. They share with Kevin that, too often, we think of culture as an afterthought. We share our vision, build the team, and then create the culture. However, culture happens when you put the people together. Culture is about the stories. Culture is dynamic and fluid and can change overnight (just think back to March 2020). They share the four forces that drive culture: vision, interest, habit, and innovation. They also recognize that anyone can influence culture. In this episode, Mario and Derek discuss Anthropology and organizational culture. Misconceptions about culture. 4 forces that drive culture. Thoughts about culture in a post pandemic world. This episode is brought to you by… From Manager to Remarkable Leader, Kevin's Flagship workshop based on his proven leadership model. Simplifying Accountability - Thoughts from Kevin
Accountability is one of those words that everyone has thoughts and feelings about. I've been known to call it the longest 4 letter word in the dictionary. And when I am asked to define or describe it in my workshops and coaching sessions, I can do so with one word. Find out my simple definition of accountability (as well as how to be more accountable) in this episode. The "Scoop" on Learning to Learn with DC Glenn
There is no overnight success. However, there is hustle. DC Glenn is a platinum-selling rapper, actor, voice-over professional and featured in Geico's "SCOOP THERE IT IS" commercial. DC shares with Kevin that his path to stardom was rather bumpy. He worked hard to get a label and signed a terrible contract. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he studied the law and waited for his day in court. This continuous learning attitude and preparedness for new ventures gave him the chance to not only star in the #1 commercial but provide input to the content. Sprinkles, anyone? He encourages us to step out of our comfort zone and be OK with things that don't work out. Failures can lead to good things if we look for the opportunity. A Leadership Development Revolution with Jennifer Mackin
What is the ROI of leadership development in your organization? Organizations invest a good deal of both time and money in training, yet we find the return dismally low. If this is the case, should we bother with development activities? Jennifer Mackin is the author of Leaders Deserve Better: A Leadership Development Revolution and a leader of two consulting firms. Jennifer shares with Kevin that the principles of leadership hold, and we don't have a problem with the content. However, we do need to change how we leverage the new learning and create a culture where folks can put their new learning into play. In addition, we need to have a people plan to connect with our strategic plan and continue the learning beyond an event. In this episode, Jennifer shares: Thoughts on the leadership development problem. The 4 drivers of leadership development success. Thoughts on the use of an external coach. Little Hinges Swing Big Doors - Thoughts from Kevin
One of my mentors has said repeatedly to me: Little hinges swing big doors. Stated a little differently, he was telling me that little things matter in big ways. Another common phrase that I've heard multiple times is: Don't sweat the small stuff. I understand the sentiment, and there are some little things we don't need to sweat, but I really love this idea from Bruce Barton: "Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things . . . I am tempted to think . . . there are no little things." In this episode, I'll unpack this paradox and say a little more about the idea between little hinges and big doors. The Experimental Leader with Melanie Parish
We recognize that growth requires moving away from the status quo. Yet, how do you know what to change? Melanie Parish suggests it's OK to experiment and collect data to decide what to do next. Melanie is the author of The Experimental Leader: Be a New Kind of Boss to Cultivate an Organization of Innovators. She joins Kevin to discuss this mindset shift to be experimental in problem-solving. When we can test assumptions and analyze the results, we can decide how to handle challenges and opportunities within our organizations and teams. We should expect failures; it is the small failures that provide good data. The big failures may be a result of doing too much, too soon. In this episode, Melanie discusses: A scientist's approach to leadership. Best practices and experimentation. Failure and experimentation. Leading with Authenticity with Sabrina Horn
Fake it until you make it. This may work to help you overcome some insecurities, public speaking, for example. However, if you fake it too long, whether this is your experience, next quarter's numbers, etc., the truth will come out. Sabrina Horn tells Kevin that integrity is not optional. She is the author of Make it, Don't Fake it – Leading with Authenticity for Real Business Success. She acknowledges it can be lonely at the top and even if you are making all the decisions, you don't have to know it all. When you can admit what you don't know or that you made a mistake, you level the playing field for your team and build a culture of trust and growth. Do Your Traditions Feed You? - Thoughts from Kevin
When I think of the word tradition, I instantly think of the song "Tradition" in one of my favorite plays The Fiddler on the Roof. And while when we talk about traditions, we are often talking about them in the context of holidays or celebrations and the things we do to commemorate them, in the context of this video, I'm talking specifically about traditions at work. As many of us transition back to the workplace or adjust to a hybrid scenario or are looking at a completely unknown future, re-evaluating your traditions is a really useful exercise. In this episode, I'll provide some questions to ask and some ideas to consider to help ensure that the traditions you are either returning to or are continuing to observe are useful and actually feed you. Are You Willing to Ask? - Thoughts from Kevin
Awhile back, I wrote a post on LinkedIn and had a blinding flash of the obvious. I asked a question at the end of the post and the post got more engagement and comments than ever before. I went back to see how often I ended with a question. And as I suspected, it wasn't very often! Opportunities Have Expiration Dates - Thoughts from Kevin
Opportunities have expiration dates. I saw this quote recently, and I wish I could remember who/where to attribute this quote to because I instantly loved it. There is a lot of truth in it. Let's think about opportunity for a minute… Have you ever missed an opportunity because you were unaware of it? Have you ever missed an opportunity because you let it fall down your priority list? Have you ever missed an opportunity because you delayed, or were stuck in analysis paralysis? At least one is a yes.. guaranteed. What Do You Wear to Work? - Thoughts from Kevin
As long as I've been in the workplace, there's always been a conversation about the dress code. In fact, when I first started working for Chevron, I was handed a copy of "Dress for Success" as part of the onboarding process. Since then, the conversation has moved from "Casual Friday"…to casual every day…to the day when everyone was sent home to work and the dress code as we knew it changed significantly. Now before you think this post and this video is about fashion, let me reassure you, it's not. Instead, in this episode, I'm talking about how what we choose to wear has some pretty big implications far beyond what style of clothing is our favorite. Trusting Yourself with Melody Wilding
It's important to understand who you are before getting to the why. Some of us are more logical and task oriented. Others of us focus on our emotions, our environment, and the behavior of others to guide our success. Melody Wilding suggests these "Sensitive Strivers" can anticipate the needs of the team because they are aware of how others are feeling. This empathy can also preclude them from making decisions because they are worried about what others will think. The Unconventional Path to Breakthrough Ideas with Cyril Bouquet
How do new ideas come about? Cyril Bouquet is the co-author of ALIEN THINKING: The Unconventional Path to Breakthrough Ideas. Although new, innovative ideas seem to appear magically, they take time to emerge, mature and become successful. Cyril and his co-authors studied professions of people who challenge existing paradigms (inventors, artists, scientists). They found these folks use five patterns of thinking that distinguish them from the rest of us. These patterns -Attention, Levitation, Imagination, Experimentation, and Navigation- can help innovative thinking and problem-solving. He also says the navigation piece can be the most difficult because this is where the "rubber meets the road" and often where we face the most resistance. When Are You at Your Best? - Thoughts from Kevin
You might know that I grew up on a farm. And on a farm, you work late into the evening when needed. You see, my Dad was a night person. So it was not uncommon for me to work very late into the evening. Because of this, I grew up thinking I was a night person. That is until I wasn't around my Dad and wasn't needed to work those nighttime shifts anymore. And it was then that I quickly realized I am at my best in the morning and not in the evening. It took me awhile to figure this out, but when you know your "power time", you know when you're at your best. In this episode, I'll help you determine your "power time" so that you can capitalize on these hours when you are at your best.

What makes Amazon different? What are the secrets to their success? Bill Carr would say they aren't really secrets, but it does take innovative management. Bill is a former Amazon executive and the co-author with Colin Bryer of Working Backwards: Insights, Stories and Secrets from Inside Amazon. Bill and Kevin dig deep into the idea of working backwards. It starts with leaders being customer-obsessed, finding out what they want/need and work backward. This isn't as easy as it sounds. We meet with lots of folks each day, many of whom are not our customers. So, we need to go out of our way to think about the customer. Get a Vision and Live It with Larry Olsen
Do you have to? or Do you want to? We all have a choice. Larry Olsen is the author of Get a Vision and Live It. He joins Kevin to discuss how people can learn to change their attitudes to align with their visions. Our brain makes decisions based on the past, not what the future holds; our growth is limited. Saying No with Love - Thoughts from Kevin
The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything. You've gotta keep control of your time, and you can't unless you say no. You can't let people set your agenda in life. – Warren Buffett Now who am I to argue with Warren Buffett? I completely agree that we must be protective of our time and that how we spend our time is directly correlated to our success. And yet…I am not advocating that we immediately say NO to everything. It's important to use judgement always in our decisions. And that when we do say no, we say it with love. Tweet it out: To achieve our goals sometimes we must say no – but we can say no in a way that preserves relationships and future opportunities – that's saying no with love. @KevinEikenberry From This Episode: Get a short, inspirational email tip every Monday – Friday by signing up for Kevin's Daily Email here.

Connecting with Others Through Listening with Ximena Vengoechea
Ernest Hemingway said, "When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen." Ximena Vengoechea thinks Ernest may be on to something. She is the author of Listen Like You Mean It: Reclaiming the Lost Art of True Connection. As a user researcher, she understands the importance of listening for understanding. This is true for product research and organizational success. Often, we find ourselves default listening. We are sort of paying attention, yet we don't get the true experience or the emotions of the talker. Ximena tells Kevin we need to move to empathetic listening, which starts with the intention to listen. A listening mindset begins with humility, curiosity, and empathy. When we bring this to the table, not only are we better people, but we are also better leaders.
