Despite record earnings and good economic news, markets haven't gotten much traction, and in that process, money flows into the market are rapidly deteriorating and bringing us closer to a correctional period. A re-test of the 50-DMA and a break in that point would set up for about a 12% decline down to the 200-DMA--well within the context of time and duration. The decline in emerging markets continues, thanks to an uptrend in the Dollar. Small Caps and Mid Caps continue to underperform, as money migrates to hide in the bigger, highly-liquid names on the S&P, which are better for institutional risk management. Watch market behavior for a familiar pattern of climbing, flattening, and falling to at least the 50-DMA--which have corresponded to money flow sell signals. The Jackson Hole meeting will have an impact, especially if a time line for tapering is revealed. The Gold conundrum: Concerns about inflation, slower economic growth, and the impact of COVId on the economy have seemed to not affect golf at all--still underperforming. The problem with gold is, there's no fear in the markets. Buy signals extend on declining money flows--watch the MACD, about to flip from buy to sell. A MACD crossover could lead to a bigger correction. Markets are contained, and there is risk all the way down to the 50-DMA. NASDAQ is in similar shape, bouncing off 20-DMA Tuesday, and very deviated from 200-DMA. Emerging Markets have risen, but running into overhead resistance. International Markets have burned up much of their momentum; not a great place for capital allocation. Mid-caps have not been performing well, and small-caps aren't, either. NOTE: Watch the video version of this report by subscribing to our YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/c/TheRealInvestmentShow (8/3/21) Ahead of this month's Jackson Hole meeting, the Fed is stuck in a box: Improving economy, stronger employment, and rising inflation--which should push them to raise rates and taper QE. But, the Bond market is signaling that the economy is NOT all that strong, yet. So long as QE remains in place, market fundamentals don't really matter. There's currently a lot of headroom above the 50-DMA; there is a large deviation between market prices and the 200-DMA. The farther we get into the Buy Signal, the closer we're getting to triggering another MACD Sell Signal. Equally important from the Fed is their outlook for growth in the economy, with one eye on what's happening with interest rates. The 10-year Treasury rate nailed it in terms of where economic growth was going to be pegged--at 6.5% in March vs expectations of 13%. Something is not right within the economic complex. Yields are declining, and another Buy signal is imminent. We're looking for a reduction in economic policy, weaker growth, and the potential for weaker market growth. (8/2/21) August tends to be one of the weaker months of the year; we've now gone six months without a negative market result. The risk of correction is heightened, the longer we go without a correction. The Money Flow Buy signal is in place, but much of the intertia has been consumed, limiting upside opportunities. COVID lockdowns, weaker economic growth, and potentially disappointing manufacturing numbers could weigh down markets. Plus, with the Jackson Hole conference offering the potential for official tapering news from the Fed, there are issues that could pull markets down. (7/19/21) Markets are set to open lower this morning; the 50_DMA has been a good source of support of late. We're very early in this sell-off; watch for a pick up in volatility. If the 50-DMA is broken, the next run down is to the 200-DMA--a drop of about 11%, certainly within the realm of possibility. What's coming home to roost is any justification for current valuations. (7/14/21) A review of the strong and weak sectors of the markets, which are generally elevated with positive money flows, suggesting limited upside and consolidation; watch the behavior of the MACD. Communications are stalled, Utilities haven't participated in market lift; Discretionary looks to have peaked. Staples haven't participated well in market rally, failing at the 50-DMA. Energy breaks its 50-DMA, with more downside risk. Financials are struggling at their 50-DMA; Healthcare is another area performing well, from which to take some profits. Industrials and Materials are coming under pressure with deflationary influences in the economy. Real Estate's huge run looks to have peaked. More important, the look-out for earnings going forward, as corporate earnings undergo pressure. Markets are looking for some justification for over-paying for assets. Market rally was decent, but limited; as we enter back half of July, we could see a correction. The current set-up is similar to the patterns seen in April, with sell signals at high levels with positive money flows, resulting in market stagnation before correction. This suggests not only that we're seeing the peak of current economic growth, but also weaker earnings growth in the future. This would suggest that earnings estimates are way too elevated for the kind of economy Treasury Yields are indicating ahead.
