Slow grind downward has worked off over-bought conditions. Was this really the "worst crash since May," as bleated by the press? There were certainly similarities, but about half of the morning's losses were reversed by bulls buying the dip. Is there going to be follow-through today...and what happened the last time we saw a sell-off? Markets must get past the 50-DMA today or tomorrow, or there's more risk to come: What will the Fed do; what happens with Evergrande; how will slowing economic growth, shrinking earnings, and a lack of liquidity weigh on investors' attitudes? Can we repeat March's rally above the 50-DMA? But, the iPhone is holding steady on pricing of its new iPhone 13 at iPhone 12 levels. Netflix showing a bit of a correction, but not near its 50-DMA. FAANG stocks are still over all driving the markets. Microsoft continues to lead the charge; but can Microsoft support the market all by itself? Inflation and supply chain disruptions remain a problem for the economy, and plunging consumer sentiment isn't helping, either. The lack of liquidity is the biggest risk to markets: Pay attention to market volume on buys. The differential in liquidity is the gap between buyers and sellers. Buyers are struggling with higher levels of pricing. We're once again approaching record buy backs. NASDAQ buying is occurring on much lower levels of volume. Two things to watch over next several months: Retraction in earnings estimates and tapering from the Fed. Money Flow Sell-signals were triggered as part of a normal correction process. Can markets hold the 50-DMA, markets' "line in the sand?" It's been a very, very long time since a test of the 200-DMA--currently 10% below current highs. The possibility is not outside the realm of normality: A 10% correction in any given year is to be expected (and if 2021 is a year in which markets to NOT test the 200-DMA, it will be only the 14th time since 1929 that's happened.) We suspect this test will occur after weaker economic growth is apparent, or the Fed admits to talking of tapering QE. (8/16/21) The collapse of Kabul, Afghanistan, tops the news, but it likely will not be much of a catalyst for markets--not as much as the Fed's role and its move to taper quantitative easing. Markets are already competing with the economy for liquidity. Like Kabul, consumer confidence is collapsing as stimulus payments run out. Markets are holding on at marginal highs with the largest equity inflows on record--both those flows are declining. We're looking at a 3% back to the 50-DMA; a reversion to the 200-DMA would be an 11% drop.
