The Real Investment Show Podcast

(12/16/21) Markets loved the Fed's announcement that tapering will commence, and the rate of change in rates will be accelerate: Three interest rate hikes in 2022, and three more in 2023. If inflation continues to rage (now termed "non-transitory"), there is a likelihood those rate hikes will become even more fast and furious. This more-hawkish mood of the Fed did not deter markets, rising sharply on the announcement, and the S&P could hit 4700 over the next few days. Markets are, however, very over-bought, limiting the upside somewhat. The recent selling has been a function of mutual fund "window dressing" as year-end approaches. Of continuing concern lately has been the lack of volume--even in yesterday's strong rally. And, markets are now set-up for the classic, end-of-the-year rally. (12/15/21) Here's an inside look at the technical parameters we use to set up stop losses on positions in our portfolios. "Setting a stop" is like drawing a line in the sand, beyond which you are not willing to lose money on a stock. Let's look at Apple--a stock that's currently trading at three standard deviations above its moving average--which is very extended, and ripe for a pullback. The first thing you might want to do is take profits...then determine at what point you'd want to remove it from your portfolio. Where are the 20- and 50-DMA? Moving averages work well because they move over time, and indicate previous levels of support--another tool in setting up stop-losses. Stops are not an all-or-nothing proposition; you can reduce just a portion of your holdings in a company, too. We look at previous trend lines for price support. A break in a rising trend line is a key clue in where to place the stop. (12/14/21) Market trading could get sloppy with the Fed on deck tomorrow to talk about monetary tapering...and options expirations on Friday spurring traders to reposition. The 20-DMA is just below where markets are sitting. Bollinger Bands are not too far above current highs. Markets are oversold, so working that off could set up for a rally into the year's end. Interestingly, while the major markets have been holding onto all-time highs, in the cryptospace, that's not been the case. Bitcoin is down two standard deviations below its 50-DMA, and is very oversold. Money flows do suggest there could be a bit of a rally in Bitcoin into the end of the year, but that tends to be a risk-on, risk-off asset, so when markets rally, Bitcoin goes along for the ride. ARKK Fund has been under pressure this year--now down about 20%, while the top ten stocks in the market have been up substantially...and example of how those stocks are not necessarily representative of the whole of the market. (12/13/21) Events this week could set up for a period of sloppy trading, including the Fed meeting on Wednesday to discuss monetary policy--and whether or not they'll raise rates faster than expected--as well as Options Expirations on Friday; portfolio rebalancing and window dressing should then lead to the end of year Santa Claus Rally. A good "buy" signal is in place, and money flows are improving. Markets are temporarily over-bought for now, and a pull back this week would set markets up nicely for Santa's rally in the final two weeks of the month. Bonds are back on a money flow "sell" signal, and we're looking for the next entry level to add more bonds to our portfolio. Because of the Fed's tightening policy and a flatter yield curve, we'll be looking at profit margin compression. (12/8/21)Is the "short-term" rally actually here to stay? Markets have broken out of the short-term downtrend of the past two weeks WITH Conviction! As markets open higher, sustainability becomes the big question. Money Flow indicators and MACD's are turning positive, coinciding with the traditional Santa Claus rally in late December. However, next week's Fed meeting could reveal more market weakness. The VIX is collapsing back towards support, and Bonds have also fallen back towards the 50-DMA--suggesting this rally has some legs in the near-term. That does not necessarily mean markets are going to take off to all-new highs, but with over-bought conditions, it is likely that price action sloppiness and the finishing touches on mutual fund portfolios could combine with positive influences to lift the markets through the end of the year. (12/7/21) Markets continue to rebound, as expected, heading towards mid-month. Markets are now set to rally toward the 20-DMA, but we're not quite finished with Mutual Fund rebalancing, and there is still short-term risk. Getting into early 2022-, the Fed will captivate investor attention, and whether and when it will tighten QE. Also look for 2022 headwinds in the form of lower profit margins, higher rates of inflation, wage-growth and employment costs--all of which have been supportive of current market valuations. But next year, as earnings begin to reflect underlying economic deterioration, valuations will be much more challenging. Bitcoin, too, is beginning to show signs of the risk-off attitude, falling in tandem with markets. (12/1/21) Is the sell-off over--and is it time to buy stocks? After Jerome Powell mentioned retiring the word, "transitory," and speeding the rate of taper, stocks took a dive. We said this would happen, prior to a Santa Claus rally at the end of the year. Buying stocks could be a good idea...but: When should you do so, and how? First, watch the bearish trends, testing the downtrend channel. We're looking for strong support at the 50-DMA. Money Flow buy-signals are also very flat, and close to turning positive. However--Money Flows did turn negative on Tuesday for the first time since September/October...and the over-bought/over-sold indicators are at very low levels...all suggesting we're near the end of the selling pressure. So, how to add money to portfolios? Be aware of continued selling pressure as mutual funds rebalance, and note the continued negative divergence of market breadth from the market. It's better to buy a stock on the way back up than to bottom fish a stock on the way down. (11/30/21) Despite Monday's rally, markets are still in correction mode, and the Omicron variant is providing the "excuse" for correction to occur. It's important to note that Friday's decline, in a half-day of light-volume trading, was followed by a Cyber Monday rally in a full day of activity, with only half the volume of Friday's rout. The Omicron variant is still a source of concern this morning. This consolidation and correction has been expected--all that was needed was a catalyst. Enter, Omicron. Money flow indicators are beginning to flatten, signaling an end in sight for this correction. Look for support between recent lows and the 50-DMA. More near-term weakness is expected, setting up for a Santa Claus Rally. (11/12/21) Investor complacency can be demonstrated by markets apparent lack of motivation despite rising rates and rising inflation, a condition that's not too surprising, given the Fed's more active intervention in the markets since 2000. Stocks are trading at their upper range of the Bollinger bands, suggesting there's not a lot of upside left, currently. Money Flow indicators are fairly over-sold this week, and MACD's are still in a sell signal, suggesting a struggle for prices, but no real sign of correction just yet. (11/16/21) How do we trade this off-the-charts bull market? Trading is a function of understanding the direction of prices and trends over time. The tools we use include the 20- and 50-DMA, which provide sequential snapshots of market activity over the past 20- and 50-days. Bollinger Bands provide a measure of deviation away from these averages. Our advice here is to keep it simple. The goal is to maximize gains when markets rise, and limit losses when they wane. Currently, markets are extended above their moving averages, which suggests increasing risk of correction over the next few weeks; in order for an average to exist, both high- and low-points must occur. Options expirations and mutual fund distributions are both events that could impact market direction by putting pressure on prices over the next few weeks, and a correction back to the 50-DMA would not be all that surprising. An RSI or Williams Percent Indicator can provide signals for over-bought and over-sold market conditions. (11/15/21) Historical precedents for Options Corrections Week indicate markets are primed for correction, as portfolio managers jockey for positions to optimize their "look" to investors. Will that happen this week? Who knows...but: There are a record level of Call Options out by retail traders, and when they roll-over this week, that could apply pressure on prices. A partial sell-off back to the 50-DMA could provide you with opportunity to put money back to work (we recently took a little bit of profit to reduce our over-bought, extended positions, in anticipation of such opportunities). Mutual Fund distributions in the first two weeks of December, combined with a history of those weeks being a little anemic, could allow a pull-back, setting up for an end-of-the-year Santa Claus Rally. (11/11/21) Markets sell-off on news of 6.2% inflation that's NOT transitory; inflation is essentially an economic brake. Companies must decide whether to pass along price increases or reign-in operating costs. i. e., a reduction in labor. This dynamic will slow earnings, even as advances in the market have been keyed to rosier expectations about margins and earnings growth for 2022. What will be the impact as these expectations are adjusted downward? Look for a market re-evaluation sometime next year. Money flow Buy-signals have been triggered, and the MACD Buy-signal is in place; watch for a retracement back to the 50-DMA. Compounding this scenario: Holidays are looming, options expirations will hit next week, and mutual fund rebalancing--all will provide reasons to sell-off. (11/9/21) Markets continue to eke out gains after 19-days of positive movement, now three standard-deviations above the 50-DMA to levels that normally precede corrections. Money Flow Sell signals are in place, with money flows and MACD signals still remaining positive. We're expecting some pretty sloppy trading for the next week. Despite markets making new highs, the VIX us also on the rise, and we're about to see a surge in the VIX as the market begins to correct--nothing major, but perhaps a 3- to 5-percent "relaxation." Other indications of real market speculation include the performances of AMD, NVIDIA, and Ford--trading at 4- to 5-times deviations from long term moving averages. We're resizing our portfolio positions in companies like these.
