#288 - Stefanie Flippin: From Last-to-First in a 100 Mile Race in 5 Years

In 2013, Stefanie Flippin ran her first ultra. She didn't make the last cut-off and was pulled from the course with 6 miles to go. She cried herself to sleep that night and vowed to never be so unprepared for anything again. In 2015, she whined her way through my first 100 miler, begging her husband and parents to just let her drop. She came in DFL (dead f'ing last) but learned at the finish why no one would allow her to give up. During those years and beyond she watched in awe as the frontrunners racked fast times and staying so mentally tough and focused for hours on end. Stefanie fell short over and over and didn't think she could every succeed at that level. Then, five years after her first ultra, Stefanie lined up with nine men on the Tunnel Hill 100 start line for the first wave, thinking "who do I think I am?" But after years of doubting herself, she knew exactly who she is now and that has made all the difference. How did she do? 1st female/7th overall. 3rd fastest female all-time on the course. 3rd fastest female 100 mile in the U.S. this year. An 11 hour and 39 minute PR and her 5th 100 mile finish - 15:55:06 (9:33 min/mi pace). Sponsors: Previnex is a supplement brand that I trust, use, and have greatly benefited from. #287 - Elysha Omoomy: Positivity Personified

Elysha Omoomy is back, she was also featured in episode 126, after yet another paradigm shifting performance. I was going to write-up shownotes, per usual, for this show but decided to simply copy and past Elysha's Instagram post from November 16 because it hits her positivity, relentlessness, and dedication on the head: "From 5:21 12:17/mi to 3:04 7:03/mi, my message to you: NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS! I’m no different than you. I learned how to run back in 2010 and kept at it. It was so hard! But little by little, I improved and eventually learned how to dig deep and push past the discomfort. This is something I am still learning to do as I’m getting “faster” in paces. But you know what, I BELIEVE IN YOU! Now it’s time for YOU to BELIEVE YOU ARE WORTHY OF IT ALL!" The new Mastering 40 episode is here and it details my wildest week yet. Last weekend I was able make up for my 10k DNF six weeks ago with a strong effort. #284 - Molly Gutt: Champion Fighter to Endurance Athlete

Molly Gutt has one of the most unique athletic backgrounds that we've ever had on the show. Cheerleading and gymnastics as a teenager gave way to aerobic kickboxing in her 20's. From there, she was eager to test herself against other fighters and moved to Muay Thai - a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. A short time later, Molly proved herself as one of the best around. She is two-time national amateur Muay Thai Champion at 112 lbs. and 119 lbs. During her Muay Thai training Molly was introduced to running. At first it was simply a way to gain aerobic fitness. After yet another injury, Molly began to full in love with endurance sport. Running is a far cry from the explosive sports that populate Molly's past. Yet, she has found a deep affection for the sport and now looks to continue striving for PR's and greater distances. #281 - Danielle Turk-Bly

In this episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast we are joined by the wonderful Danielle Turk-Bly. It was an honor to have Danielle on the show as she is a 2:47 marathoner, accomplished yoga instructor and owner of Lunar Lotus Yoga, home-schooling mother of three boys, and high-level junior alpine skier. She also just successfully finished Des Linden's Run Destober. This grueling challenge involved running a mile for each calendar date in October, ending with 31 miles on October 31. That's 496 miles in total with 196 in the final week. Simply incredible. Danielle was a bigtime skier as a youngster. She only ran for one year in high school and not at all in college. After her second son was born she really dedicated herself to the sport and fount amazing results. In fact, after several years she found herself within earshot of an Olympic Trials Qualifying time. In the years between those skiing and childbirth Danielle battled a crushing eating disorder. It was a battle she nearly lost. Today she is not only a sub-elite runner with even bigger visions and goals ahead but she is also high-level yoga practioner. We also talk about how has positively impacted her running and her life. This is a topic we haven't discussed much on the show and it was eager to dive-in. You can learn more about Danielle at www.instagram.com/runnellyrun. #278 - Mastering 40, Ep. 5

The new Mastering 40 episode is here and it details some major variances in performance and mindset. First, Adrienne Langelier, my sport psychologist, and I talk through a recent poor performance in a 10k workout that was a complete mental failure. From there we discuss how I should mentally plan out to my 5k race effort (a model that worked exceedingly well). Finally, we take a deep dive in my lifelong habit that has been killing my potential. This is a topic that we will talk about several times over the coming year. In the second half of the episode coach James McKirdy breaks down my first race of the season - a virtual 5k. This was the first time I have ever successfully completed a coach's pre-race plan and the first time I have negative split a race. Progress! #276 - Jereny Rivera

Jereny Rivera is a classic example of ignoring limits and just running for running's sake. Five years ago Jereny had never gone for a proper run. Five years later Jereny is kicking butt and taking names. In fact, a couple weeks ago Jereny set her 5k PR with a blazing 19:07! And here we go! My quest to break 40:00 in the 10k next summer at the age of 40 took a big step forward in recent weeks. My mileage is now approaching 30 miles a week and legit workouts have begun. The running hasn't been perfect but steps are being made. Most importantly: I'm still 100% healthy. Thank goodness. Coach James McKirdy, founder of McKirdy Trained, and I discuss all of this and talk about what the next 6-8 weeks will look like. I also speak with Adrienne Langelier, my therapist and sport psychologist. We have our normal deep dive into my current mentality, emotions, and what is driving both. #273 - Jon Lugbill & In-Person Marathon Innovation

For so many of us, this fall running season has taken the wind out of our sails. Cancellations one-after-another during a time when we hoped racing would return. While that feeling is real and pervasive, I'm happy to report that we are starting to see some real in-person options and creativity. Jon Lubgill joins me in this episode to talk about what he and his staff at Sports Backers have done to create a real and appropriate in-person experience for the Richmond Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 8k. Richmond offers a groundbreaking timing solution on a USATF-certified course and is following health and safety protocols to take the guess work out of race day for you. It's true, you can still run a marathon or half marathon this year, on an actual course, with mile markers, bathrooms, and bottle refill stations. You can still get an official result and it can all be done in a safe, socially-distanced manner. From November 7-22, Richmond will have an official course with markings for a marathon, half marathon, and 8k, open 5 a.m. to 5:30 p.m, on the Virginia Capital Trail, a paved trail just minutes from downtown Richmond. Spots are limited, so don’t miss out. Register now at www.richmondmarathon.org, and use the code ‘RamblingRunner’ for a $10 discount through November 22. Registration is $85 for the marathon, $75 for the half marathon, and $30 for the 8k. And make sure to beat the November 1 price increase for all three distances. #272 - Buddy Perdue (Boston Marathon Virtual Series 4 of 4)

What do Buddy Perdue, myths, and wine all have in common? They all get better with age. Buddy began running at age 44. After few brief challenges he took to it quickly. After years as a cyclist he was able to transition his fitness and aerobic capacity to his new endeavor. Over the next five years he kept improving before reaching a plateau. Undeterred, Buddy reached out to coach James McKirdy with a simple goal: break three hours in the marathon. He was 48 at the time. Nearly four years later Buddy has blown that goal out of the water. Two weeks ago he and his close friends created a USATF certified race near their hometown in lieu of the Boston Marathon cancellation. This was a certified event that fit the local government's restrictions of no more than 25 participants. Once secured, it was time to race! Buddy blazed his way to a 2:53 at age 52. A remarkable accomplishment. In this episode, we talk about his winding path to this point, his view of limits and limitations, and how he was able to coordinate the certification process for his effort. #271 - Felicia Chen (Boston Marathon Virtual Series 3 of 4)

Felicia Chen's ability to combine a holistic view of competition and sport with desire to achieve at a high level is nearly unparalleled. For that, and for so many other reasons, I was elated to have Felicia on the show. In this episode, Felicia talks about running not one but two virtual Boston Marathons on each side of 3:00, giving up running for nearly a decade and coming back stronger than ever, and the mindset needed to handle a myriad of challenges. #270 - Marquis Bowden (Boston Marathon Virtual Series 2 of 4)

Marquis Bowden is making some serious moves. The former college basketball player bounced around west coast colleges looking for the right fit. It never came. Little did he know that the journey would lead him to the perfect place to begin his running career. In 2017, Marquis began running and he was hooked. Not only did he pick up the sport quickly but the sense of community in his L.A. group runs hooked him for life. In the last few years he debuted in the marathon with a blazing 3:09 before nailing a couple 10 minute personal bests. His goal in 2020 was to set a new PR at the Boston Marathon. While he wasn't able to that in the spring like he hoped he was ready to take aim last weekend anyways. Not only that, Marquis was able to blast through the 2:40 barrier with a solo effort that portends even greater things to come. #269 - Alexis McCoy (Boston Marathon Virtual Series 1 of 4)

Today's episode with Alexis McCoy is the first in a series of episodes with folks who competed in the Boston Marathon Virtual Race. Alexis has the Boston Marathon in her bones. She has been in love with the race, and everything it stands for, for years. While she has now run 17 marathons, Boston holds a special place in her heart. This former small-school college runner gave up the sport at the age of 20. Her love of running returned several years later when she was basically tricked into signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon. Then Boston 2013 happened. The tragic finish line bombing occurred shortly after Alexis crossed the fabled finish line. The tragedy of that day would haunt Alexis for years and drove her away from the sport she loved. After finding help and working through the trauma, Alexis once again returned to running. With stroke of serendipity, plenty of hard work, and a loving coach, Alexis began to thrive. Last weekend at the first Virtual Boston Marathon, Alexis ran her best ever marathon in a race that she loves but in the odd circumstances that virtual races can create. In this special episode, Alexis details all of this, and so much more, with thoughtful grace and endless charm. Mastering 40 Bonus Episode: September Blood Analysis and Recommendations

When I first had the idea for Mastering 40 I knew that one of the major steps I would need to take was a detailed blood analysis. A mirror, scale, and workout data can provide insight but it doesn’t tell the whole story. I needed to know my exact starting point then track my biomarkers throughout the year. I reached out to InsideTracker, the leader in this space, and they agreed to help me out. Stevie Smith MS,RDN,CSSD,CDN, a registered dietitian at InsideTracker, and ten time IRONMAN finisher, dove into my tests and provided loads of feedback. Finding out how my body had reacted to me poor nutrition and reduced activity level put me on edge. I was worried that my health might be worse than I had imagined. Not simply for running but for life in general. While I was in the optimized range for nearly 40 biomarkers, several tests were off the mark. Especially the cholesterol numbers. #268 - Mastering 40, Ep. 3

September is upon on and it is a whole new world within the Mastering 40 series. School for my kiddos and wife are starting and our schedules are completely influx. This is the case for so many runners out there. Getting used to a new schedule that will work well for us and our families can certainly be a struggle. In this episode I dive deep with Adrienne Langelier, my sport psychologist, and Starla Garcia, my registered dietitian. Adrienne and I talk all about the anxiety and the unknown that the near future holds. Starla helps me work through my struggles to stick with some of her recommendations and my near constant self-judgement. #267 - Zoë Rom

Zoë Rom is the writer, producer, and creater of one of the best podcasts of any genre - the DNF Podcast by Trail Runner Magazine. Not only that, she is a badass athlete who set two FKT's (fastest known time) this summer. DNF is a show that combines the very best story telling in the running community with the production quality of a show on NPR. It focuses on the many faces of failure and how it can often be the starting point for reclamation, success, and even greatness. It has set a new standard of excellence in the running podcast genre. I am honored to talk with the brains and talent behind such a remarkable audio original - https://trailrunnermag.com/trailrunning-podcast. As good as Zoë is on DNF, she may be even better on the trails. Her love running, hiking, and being in nature is the foundational element in her show and marvel to behold. #266 - Margi Johnson

Have you had a chance to talk to a real life super hero? Up until last week, I hadn't. Then I had the honor to speak with Margi Johnson. Margi is a doctor in the Philly/NJ/NYC area and one heck of a runner. She has visions of trying to OTQ for 2020. Training was going well and she was the fittest she had ever been. This master's running was kicking butt and taking names. Then in late fall things started to slowly fall apart. Her fitness disintegrated and she, a knowledgeable doctor, could not pin point the problem. Five short months later, Margi had dealt with two bouts of COVID-19 and played a critical role in helping patients of this destructive virus in NYC. Not only that, she was literally fighting for her life. We cover all of this, and so much more, in one of the most powerful episodes we've ever done at the Rambling Runner Podcast. Overcoming the hurdles in our lives are usually the paradigm shifting moments that set our lives on their ultimate path. Nobody knows this better than Emily Abbate - host of the Hurdle podcast, run coach, and prodigious writer, and all around media machine. About 10 years ago, Emily made the decision that she was no longer happy living with how her body made her feel. At that moment her life changed in many ways. In this episode, we talk about her transformation, marathon running, and sharing the healthy lifestyle that she personifies. We also spend considerable time discussing her transition from staff writer and editor at some of the countries most well-known publications to a one-woman media juggernaut. #264 - Charlie Watson: The Runner Beans

It was a pleasure to finally have a chance to speak runner, RD, and author Charlie Watson. I say "finally" because I've wanted to have her on the show for a long time. I've long enjoyed following Charlie's many running accomplishments, she is a 6-Star Abbott World Major Marathon finisher, and culinary creations. After setting aside my nerves, I approached Charlie about coming on the show and was delighted when she accepted the invite. Charlie's cookbook, Cook, Eat, Run, offers a no-nonsense approach to eating for runners and athletes of all levels. From filling breakfasts and high-protein snacks to post-run energy fixes and speedy suppers, it's an essential companion for anyone looking to seize control of their fitness regime. Not only that, it is the most used cookbook in our house. There's a section dedicated to on-the-go fuel including homemade energy gels, hydration drinks and energy bars, alongside recipes from elite runners including Sara Hall, Kara Goucher and Molly Huddle. #263 - Mastering 40, Ep. 2

The Mastering 40 is now well on it's way. Things are going well but there is still PLENTY of work to be do. In this episode we consult with our three specialists. With the help of a professional coach - James McKirdy, sports registered dietitian - Starla Garcia, and a sports psychologist - Adrienne Langelier, I am determined to have the best athletic year of my life. One that will end, hopefully, with a sub-40:00 10k. This is a huge stretch goal and I am determined to get it done. Over the course of this year I will also be turning 40 years old and become a masters runner. Hence the “Mastering 40.” I will be documenting the journey with two blog posts a week at www.mastering40.com and a podcast every three weeks. #262 - Tanya Lerch: Delayed Gratification and 4:38 to 3:08

It was a blast to have Tanya Lerch on the show. This incredibly smart and energetic runner, teacher, mother, and founder of a pediatric non-profit brought the goods in this episode. We touched on so many things, not the least of which was her transition from a 4:38 to 3:08 marathon. We also talk about an amazing project that her and her students are engaged in that provides prosthetics to children whose families can't afford such devices. Learn more about that here: https://www.sageprosthetics.org/ Not only that, in 1988 she participated in a follow-up study to the hallowed Stanford marshmallow experiment. This experiment was a study on delayed gratification in 1972 led by psychologist Walter Mischel, a professor at Stanford University. In this study, a child was offered a choice between one small but immediate reward, or two small rewards if they waited for a period of time. During this time, the researcher left the room for about 15 minutes and then returned. In follow-up studies, the researchers found that children who were able to wait longer for the preferred rewards tended to have better life outcomes in many areas. It was a controversial study that we had a lot of fun discussing. Sponsors: Previnex is a supplement brand that I trust, use, and have greatly benefited from. #259 - Anne Maher: From 20:44 to 16:52 in the 5k

In 2018, Anne Maher set a new PR in the 5k with a time of 20:44. She was psyched and for good reason. She had started running in her mid-twenties and had given birth to two kids in the previous handful of years. Little did she know that she was about to embark on a running journey that would make 20:44 look like a relaxing jog in the park. #250 - Working Through a Long-term Injury with Heather McKirdy

Are you a runner? Have you ever been injured? If you answered "yes" to the first question then you almost certainly answered "yes" to the second. And she has battled injuries like nobody's business over the last couple of years. The role of cross-training, working with a therapist, leaning on friends, the self-imposed embarrassment of working with runners when you can't run, and so much more. Heather underwent surgery for compartment syndrome nearly four months ago is well on her way to recovery. Thankfully. It's been a long journey and it was an honor to have her speak to it on the show. #249 - Ruby Wyles

Ruby Wyles is one of the most mentally, emotionally, and physically tough people I've ever met. She has battled through more in her life than most people two or three times her age. This was the first time that I've had a college runner on the show. Having Ruby tell her remarkable was an absolute honor. Ruby has battled anorexia, depression, and anxiety from the age of 11. She was at an inpatient hospital for a very rough two year period in her teens. Then, to her surprise, she became one of the best young runners in Britain. Ruby talks through every aspect of this harrowing tine. The fact that Ruby emerged to receive a chance to run at a Division I in the United States is simply remarkable. We also talked about how COVID-19 turned her freshman year at Southern Methodist University upside down. From eliminating her spring track season and leaving her in a country far from home. #248 - Coaching Calls: Seth Baird & Allyson Hodge

In this episode we have two coaching calls that were recorded last week with two fantastic people who are working through challenges that are relatable to so many runners: Seth Baird and Allyson Hodge. Seth was a guest on the show in Episode 202 when we discussed his transition from college baseball player, to body builder, to first time marathoner. In this conversation we talk about dealing with nagging injuries that forced his training from running to bike-only. This is an issue that effects so many runners every year. Not only did Seth handle that issue with aplomb, he set a 5k PR just six weeks back into his running schedule. Welcome to the sub-19:00 club! Allyson is an amazing women with an awesome super power - she can run forever without getting injured. Her and Seth have had the opposite experience over the past several months. We talk about that during our call, her foray into trail running during this spring and summer, and setup a race plan for her first 5k in a long time. #247 - Triumphing Over Hurdles with Hiruni Wijayaratne

Hiruni Wijayaratne is the kind of elite runner that amateur runners can related to in so many ways. She has battled against several difficulties throughout her career and continues to come back for more. Those challenges include years worth of injuries, running in the face of unrealized expectations, balancing her training with a demanding full-time job, and more. Last year Hiruni was blindsided when the Olympic Standard for the women's marathon was lowered to 2:29:30. A feeling people who who have spent years trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon can relate to. In 2016 she missed representing Sri Lanka at the Olympics by mere seconds. After that disappointment she lowered her marathon time to the mid-2:30's and thought she was well on her way to the Games. Unfortunately, Hiruni was mistaken. Now she is battling to either get under 2:29:30 or get top-10 at a Gold Race (whenever they start up again) to qualify to head to Japan in 2021. Heady stuff for the 10 time Sri Lankan record holder, University of Kentucky alum, and current Colorado resident. You can learn more about Hiruni at https://www.instagram.com/hiruni_w/. #243 - John Raneri and the Treadmill 13.1 World Record

For John Raneri, 2019, including the first few weeks of January, was a banner year. A PR in every distance from the mile to the marathon that culminated with one of the best half marathons in U.S. history. John arrived at the Aramco Houston Half Marathon with a plan to compete and break 62 minutes - and he did just that. John clocked a 1:01:51 to finish as the 11th American. Not only that, his performance as good for 34th all-time. After that performance John decided to pass on the Olympic Marathon Trials and put all of his eggs in the Boston Marathon basket. Then COVID-19 turned those plans to dust. John quickly pivoted and setup a string of solo and competitive time trials. The last of which was as ambitious as they come - a treadmill half-marathon world record attempt. In this episode John details his wild spring and the steps he took to run 1:03:09 on a treadmill to set the world record by just under a minute.
