#240 - The Future of Strava and Boston Marathon Cancelled

It’s with great excitement that I announce the newest podcast in the Rambling Runner Podcast Network - the Business & Sports Discourse podcast. This episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast features the first two episodes of the new show. The new show will be hosted by me, Matt Chittim, and my good friend Jason Macaluso. This short-form podcast will provide insight into the current events, topics, and announcements that are at the intersection of business and sports. We will be publishing new episodes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Each show will about 20 minutes. Just long enough to dive into a specific topic but short enough for you to squeeze it into your daily routine. Part I - In the inaugural episode of the Business & Sports Discourse, we discuss the recent changes at Strava. Strava is extremely familiar to almost all runners, cyclists, and endurance athletes. They have been a mainstay in the endurance community for years and are at the forefront of fitness apps and GPS tracking. While they've had a dedicated following, they have struggled with brand identity and mission over the past several years. Last week they announced a new set of premium options as well as a new pay structure. This announcement was met with plenty of reactions across the endurance landscape. Part II - Last week the iconic Boston Marathon was officially cancelled. While not a surprise to much of the running community, it was a huge symbolic blow to many. Boston is known as one of, if the not the most, iconic races in the United States. This cancellation has an enormous effect of dedicated amateurs, charities and charity runners, elites, corporate partners, running media, and the entire running community. #239 - Deirdre Fitzpatrick

What time do you get up? Who does your hair and makeup? And, how do you look that awake? Those are the three questions KCRA Morning News anchor/reporter Deirdre Fitzpatrick gets from her Sacramento viewers. “2:15am. I do it myself which explains a lot. And, coffee by the pot.” Deirdre is a four-time Emmy award winner in writing, anchoring and reporting and has a bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She's traveled the world as a member of the Hearst Television Olympic Team. She’s covered the last nine Olympics -- 2000 Sydney, 2002 Salt Lake City, 2004 Athens, 2006 Torino, 2008 Beijing, 2010 Vancouver, 2012 London, 2014 Sochi and 2016 Rio de Janeiro. Deirdre, joined KCRA on New Year's Eve of 1997. She started as a weekend morning anchor and turned the weekday morning anchor job down three times as she couldn't imagine, "getting up that early five days a week vs. just two." Now, ironically, she can't imagine staying awake to read out loud at 11 p.m. after anchoring in the mornings since 2000! Deirdre is on the board for the Sacramento Running Association which organizes the California International Marathon, among other amazing races. She's an 18-time marathoner, ultra-runner and Ironman triathlete (2002 Ironman Wisconsin and 2013 Ironman Tahoe.) She's also a wife, mom of two sons and likes to point out that being a boymom is WAY more tiring than getting up at 2:15 a.m. or finishing Ironman. #238 - Ramblings on the Run with Ali & Matt ft. David Roche

E

Welcome to the May edition of Ramblings on the Run with Ali & Matt. Every month, Ali Feller — host of the Ali on the Run Show — and I come together to talk about running industry news, our own running, and things we’re loving right now. This time around we were joined by special guest David Roche. David is an elite trail runner and the co-founder of the coaching service Some Work All Play. He and his wife, Dr. Megan Roche, work with runners of all abilities including some of the best trail and ultra runners in the world. More importantly for this episode, he is hysterical! The three of us tried something new in this episode. Inspired by the creative sporting events happening on TV and social media, we decided to create our own. We founded the inaugural Ramblings on the Run Relay. This fictional events is simple: we each drafted a male and female from a certain walk of life for four specific races. Those combinations are as follows: Mile - Pro Athlete 5k - Musician 13.1 - Fictional Character 26.2 - Actor/Actress This was one of the most fun podcasts I've every recorded. hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it! #237 - Matt Fitzgerald: Running the Dream

Matt Fitzgerald has been running (and writing about running) for most of his adult life. Like many passionate amateur runners, he never felt he quite fulfilled his potential. In his mid-forties, Matt convinced Ben Rosario, head coach of Northern Arizona Elite, to let him train with a roster of national champions and Olympic hopefuls in the running mecca of Flagstaff, Arizona. These runners included Scott Fauble, Kellyn Taylor, Stephanie and Ben Bruce, Matt Llano, Tim Ritchie, and several others. Matt's mission: Run the race of his life at the Chicago Marathon by preparing exactly like a professional runner. Matt’s gripping account of his “fake pro runner” experience allows us to partake in his dream of fulfilling his potential. Matt also details this process through the eyes of the pro's who live that life year round, year after year. Running the Dream pulls us into the rarefied world of professional running in a way we can all relate to, regardless of speed, and to take away pieces of one man’s amazing journey to try to achieve our own potential. #236 - Jen Labesky

Like many women, Jen Labesky spent most of her life allowing everyone else's opinions of what she "should" be doing, pursuing, or thinking, to chart her course. The result? She ended up feeling completely lost and empty inside. Jen knew she was capable of so much more, but was so caught up trying to be everything to everyone that she didn't have the time to devote, or even the slightest clue how to figure out what she wanted for herself. In the last few years, life has thrown challenges at Jen one after another and her heart has been broken to pieces. In the past, she would have sat paralyzed with pain. This time around she saw the glimmer of something beautiful in the pain. Something life-changing and crystal clear. Something that made her stand up and say no more 'should's.'" By stripping away the BS and focusing on what matters to her, she has more energy and power to move fearlessly toward her dreams. Living from a BS-free place of love has given Jen purpose and a simple barometer for every decision she's made since. This includes her passion to pursue running with heart and dedicatin. Jen is also the co-founder of the GritChicks retreats. These are small group running and outdoor adventure-based getaways for women of all levels of running experience. They have designed these retreats to be a relaxed, fun place for women to come together and share their passion for running, adventure and self-discovery in a space that is separate from our everyday lives and responsibilities. GritChicks retreats are a chance for women to step a little outside of their comfort zones and try new things, while also taking time to clear their minds, dream, set goals and explore the endless possibilities for our lives. It is a time for finding strength and creating memories with friends, old and new! You can learn more about Jen, GritChicks, and read her blog at www.jenlabesky.com. #232 - Ana Johnson

Try to find a better amateur running story better than Ana Johnson's. I dare you. Ana was born in a small town in Mexico where she picked up running at a young age. She was heavily influenced by athletic parents and took to the sport immediately. Ana ran her first half-marathon at just nine years of age. After high school, Ana made her way to the New York Metro area and has never left. She attended NYU and is now working as an RN at Sloan Kettering in the oncology department. Ana is also an Olympic Trials Qualifier in the marathon. In this episode, she dives into all of this as well as training with 20 other OTQ'ers in NYC throughout the winter, working, training, and parenting through COVID-19, and who she views as her mentors. #224 - Rebecca Mehra

Rebecca Mehra is a professional middle distance runner who recently burst into the country's consciousness. This viral tweet, detailing how she helped an elderly couple buy groceries, took the internet and traditional media by storm. Long before Rebecca was honored for her empathy she made herself known in the running community. She is third all-time in the 1500m at Stanford and finished third at the 2019 5th Avenue Mile. That performance in NYC came just months after Rebecca was electrocuted so significantly that it affected her stride for weeks. We also discuss Rebecca's love for breakfast burritos and what it's like being coached by one of her idols, and fellow Stanford alumna, Lauren Fleshman. #222 - Julia Kohnen - 10th at the Olympic Trials

At the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta, Julia Kohnen finished an outstanding race in 10th place. This is a remarkable achievement for any runner, especially an unsponsored athlete who works full-time with an additional part-time job. Julia was one of the few runners who set a PR on the challenging Atlanta course. Julia‘s athletic journey did not begin as a runner. She was a four year Division II soccer player at the University of Southern Indiana. She was persuaded to use her fifth year of eligibility to join the cross country team. She rose from novice to runner to All-American in a matter of months. This non-traditional route to running success is as entertaining as it is interesting. In this episode Julia details her running transition, her ability to work 60 hours and run 100 miles in a week, and her improbable rise to the top of the women's marathon ranks. #218 - Amanda Brooks: Run to the Finish

Amanda Brooks returns to the show to discuss her new book Run to the Finish: The Everyday Runner's Guide to Avoiding Injury, Ignoring the Clock, and Loving the Run. Amanda lays out the path to finding greater fulfillment in running for those who consider themselves "middle of the pack runners" -- they're not trying to win Boston, they just want to get strong and stay injury-free so they can continue to enjoy running. Run to the Finish is not your typical running book. While it is filled with useful strategic training advice throughout, at its core, it is about embracing your place in the middle of the pack with humor and learning to love the run you've got without comparing yourself to other runners. Mixing practical advice like understanding the discomfort vs. pain, the mental side of running, and movements to treat the most common injuries with more playful elements such as "Favorite hilarious marathon signs" and "Weird Thoughts We all Have at the Start Line." #217 - Alissa Coffman

Running, injury, recovery - rinse and repeat. Alissa Coffman has lived that life for a few years now and has plenty to share. Her first appearance on the show was episode 17 and she back 200 episodes later. At that moment she has just run a 3:04 at CIM after a 4:04 at the Boston Marathon earlier in the year. Since then she has endured years of injuries but she finally back. In this episode we talk about how grueling the recovery process is, the effects on an athlete mentally, cross training like crazy, and the need for a strong group around you in order to realize your potential. #216 - Kim Sundling, PharmD, BCPP

I absolutely loved this wide-ranging conversation with Kim Sundling. Kim is an avid marathoner, cross-trainer, pharmacist with a focus on mental health, a bundle of energy - and someone who continues to work through depression. Kim touches on all of these aspects of her life, and more. On the running front, Kim ran two marathons in the fall before doing the Goofy Challenge in early January. A brutal string of races that ended with marathon that was close to a PR. As you'll hear in this episode, Kim is a force of nature who is just starting to scratch the surface on her potential. #214 - Mark Reyes

Rarely on this show do we talk about faith, but I was excited to do just that with Pastor Mark Reyes. Mark turned to faith early in his life to help him deal with some personal trauma. He turned to running around that time for the same reason. Mark re-engaged with running a couple years ago and has seen remarkable results. In this episode, Mark dives deeply into the intersections of his faith life and his running life and discusses how each informs the other, what he changed to start running faster and farther, and how people of all faiths can quite their mind and live a better life. #202 Seth Baird

There are as many different running stories as there are runners, but Seth Baird’s path to the sport is more unusual than most. Up until three years ago Seth was working hard to pursue professional body building - the literal opposite of what he is doing now. After a serious injury, and a dalliance with performance enhancers, Seth picked up running and took to it like a fish in water. This fall Seth ran his first marathon, after setting PR’s at every distance in his lead-up, and clocked a 3:14 at Charlotte. In this episode, Seth talks about this running conversion, adapting to a new model of training his body, what the marathon feels like for a first-timer. Learn more about your ad choices. #198 - Carly Spataro

In 2016, Carly Spataro was living a relatively sedentary lifestyle after years of playing soccer. By the end of 2017 she had run five marathons and improved her time from her debut 3:49 to 3:14. Needless to say, she was hooked. This last month Carly did the seemingly impossible for an amateur runner who works full-time as a pharmacist - she ran both the Chicago as NYC marathons (just three weeks apart) and did so in 2:55 and 3:05, respectively. In this episode Carly shares how she built herself into a successful and durable marathoner, how she came to love the sport, and how she stepped up her game in 2019. Learn more about your ad choices. I was so exited to get Alissa Kolarik on the show because I can’t get enough of comeback stories. Alissa embodied both of these ideas on her way to a huge PR of 3:05:20 at the Berlin Marathon. In this episode, Alissa discusses her winding running journey, choices she’s made to improve her running, and her ability to work through, and past, setbacks. Learn more about your ad choices.
