#438 - Tommie Runz: Choosing Carbon Plated Racers
Our new monthly running shoe episodes with Tommie Runz have arrived and we are starting with a bang - choosing a carbon plated racer! We take a deep dive into almost ten different popular plated racing options and choose the best ones for each of us at the marathon distance. We also do a segment on Tommie's Boston Marathon experience and PR Project. Specifically, how Tommie approached the final month of training and race day when an injury popped up and derailed his training. It was a common question that many of us have experienced - how/if we run our goal race when we aren't at healthy but can complete the distance despite not being at our best. Tommie Runz is making big moves within the broader running community. Several years back Tommie was the picture of ill-health. He had an alcohol problem, was eating poorly, and was doing little exercise. They one-by-one he addressed all of these issues until he became the man and runner he is today - fast, fit, vegan, host of the Run Eat Sleep Show, and owner of Chip Time Running. A truly magnificent transformation for a man who's an even better person than he is a runner. #437 - 360 Degree Analysis: Diane Neubauer and James McKirdy
Today on podcast the we are trying a new format that I am really excited about - a 360 degree review of an athlete's improvement. First we speak with Diane Neubauer, and then her coach James McKirdy, about her remarkable improvement over the last three years. Diane is a fantastic runner, incredibly hard worker, military wife, and mother of two. She ran her first marathon in 2013, finishing in 3:50. Three years later, she ran a 3:36 in Boston. Four years after that, with a 3:07 marathon PR and her sights set on breaking 3:00, she started working with coach James McKirdy. She had been self-coached to that point, and nobody would argue that she had seen some amazing progress. In fact, with a 3:50 debut seven years prior, many people would probably think that she had squeezed out all of her potential - that squeaking under 3:00 might be the best she could hope for. Maybe some would think even that was a little greedy. How often do we hear that we should “chip away at it” rather than take a big swing? But instead of focusing on the end goal, they focused on the process. They focused on development. Day by day, week by week. A year later, at the McKirdy Micro Michigan marathon, Diane won in a time of 2:45:42. We went back to work. Same methodology. Trust the process, let the fitness develop. She ran a 1:15 half marathon in Phoenix Mesa and finished the season with a 2:44 in Boston. It's clear there's even more improvement ahead for Diane. Learn how this has all come about and what the plans are for the future in this new format. You can follow Diane at www.instagram.com/diane_neubauer_. Learn more about your ad choices. Their first OTQ experience was something they will never forget. Not just the race, but the entire qualification process. They take a deep dive into that and how that experience informed their reaction to the new marathon trials standard and how they feel now with some time and momentum on their side. #434 - Meaghan Murray-Neuberger: Leveling Up to a New Goal After a Breakthrough
Meaghan Murray-Neuberger is back on the show and for good reason. Have you ever had a goal that you worked for years to accomplish only to fall short by the slimmest of margins time and time again? It takes a strong person with a sense of mission to keep getting up and striving for that goal instead of giving in. That is exactly what Meaghan Murray-Neuberger did when she broke the 3:00 at the Woodlands Marathon two weeks ago. Meaghan is a three-time marathon winner with a previous marathon PR of 3:00:19. At Woodlands she ran a blistering fast 2:56:33 - 6:44 pace per mile. What comes next after you finally achieve a huge goal? That's exactly what we cover in this episode. In the year since her breakthrough at the Woodlands Marathon, Meaghan has continued to improve a remarkable rate culminating in a 2:48:34 at the 2022 Boston Marathon. On the podcast Meaghan talks about what she learned from her first breakthrough and continues to use today, how she re-focused on a new goal, going for it when raceday provides unexpected challenges, and much more. Besides being as tough as leather, Meaghan is also an extraordinary business woman and entrepreneur. She is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Big Run Media and Believe in the Run. #433 - Heather Knight Pech: Boston Marathon Course Record at Age 60
”If all we did was acknowledge the time on the clock... we'd be giving a standing ovation. If all we did was acknowledge that a record was broken and that the impossible had been accomplished... we'd be celebrating for weeks and then life would move forward as it does. But the reality is that what Heather Knight Pech accomplished in the Boston Marathon is far more than her finish time of 3:03:47. It's far more than winning the division (60-64). And it's certainly far more than breaking the record held by Joan Benoit Samuelson. It's been 3 years since since Heather last finished Boston - a race that lives in her soul. It's been a bit over 1.5 years of injury that left Heather wondering if the best was behind her. But the success Heather found on Monday isn't found in the result... it's the in-between time where the story is truly told. The injury. The heartbreak. The self doubt. The loneliness of not being able to do what she is so clearly meant to. But to know Heather is to know what it means to not give up. To know what it means to demand the very best. To know what it means to love with all that you are. Heather fought her way through this hard time - but she wasn't alone. She found the best doctors for therapy. She found shoulders to lean on with her family and friends. She found inspiration from her athletes while self doubt crept in. She surrounded herself with believers leaving her no choice but to believe in herself. When Heather stepped on the starting line she left all the self doubt behind her. She knew what she could do... she was patient... and she ran the race of her life!” -These show notes were written about Heather by her coach and friend James McKirdy after she ran Boston. They are perfect so I’ve inserted them here. Follow Heather at https://instagram.com/_knighttraining Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#432 - Kara Woody: MS Warrior Makes Waves at Boston
Kara Woody is a veterinarian, mother of two, Navy wife, and a multiple sclerosis, She is also one heck of a runner who as run nine marathons with a PR of 3:32 and a three time Boston Marathon qualifier. A self described couch potato in her 20's, Kara started to run around the same time she was diagnosed with MS and she certainly made up for lost time. She has become one of the most inspirational people we've ever had on the Rambling Runner Podcast. In the last six months she has run the Boston Marathon twice and has done so with the kind of spirit and courage that so many of us aspire to embody. There are days where the runs get so tough that she wobbles. When it's too hot, she loses control of her legs and overheats. If it weren't for the life changing medicine she's on... her days would be vastly different. Several years ago she wasn't sure if she'd ever live a normal life. Then, in a moment, everything changed. #423 - Jason Fitzgerald: Bodyweight Power
Finally! Bodyweight strength training that focuses on power (with no gym or experience required)! Jason Fitzgerald from Strength Running here on the show to talk about his new offering Bodyweight Power. As Jason loves to say: Stronger Runners are Faster Runners. Strength train explosively and you’ll soon be able to run explosively. Other than delaying fatigue or preventing injuries, the other big benefit to strength training is that you’ll be able to sprint faster at the end of a race. Several powerful factors make strength workouts a great tool for speed: You’ll recruit more muscle fibers, increasing your capacity for speed Higher muscle tension means your legs will return more energy - making you run faster with the same level of effort Better economy and coordination gives you a smoother, more powerful stride If you’ve ever struggled to finish strong at the end of a race – to find that “higher gear” to power through the finish – then the strength workouts in this program will give you the power to smash through your next finish line. There’s no doubt that finding the time for a high-quality strength session (on top of your normal running schedule) can be difficult. But the real issue isn’t whether you have time, it’s whether you’re ready to improve. Do you love running? Do you want to take your racing to the next level? Passionate runners like you are often willing to make a small sacrifice to transform their running. You don’t need hours every week. You’re not a bodybuilder. And you don’t need to hit the gym 4-5 times every week. Who has time for that? All that’s needed to dramatically improve your strength, athleticism, injury resilience, power, and speed are two 30-60 minute sessions per week (that you can do at home). That’s it. You can learn more about Bodyweight Power at www.strengthrunning.com/bodyweight and use code "RAMBLING" to save 20%. #419 - Racing in Crazy Weather: Preparation and Execution
We've all done it. We've stalked the weather app on our phones as race day nears hoping that the terrible weather will somehow disappear. We hope and pray that we will have the race weather that we envisioned when we pressed submit on our race registration. Sometimes our prayers are answered the weather is on our side. Other times crazy weather is there to great us at the starting line no matter what interventions we have tried. What then? In this episode we take a deep dive into preparing for, and executing, in that exact situation. I was fortunate to go through that scenario this weekend at the Crazy Clam 13.1 as Rhode Island was hit with windchills in the low single digits and consistent wind speeds of 20-40 mph. Some things went well, some went poorly, and I'm here to share all of it with you so you can be as prepared as possible for your next race. Jereny Rivera is back and she is absolutely crushing it! Jereny was first on the show for episode 276 back in October, 2020. At that time she had just set a 5k PR of 19:07 and had dreams of going for a sub-3:00 marathon. Heady stuff for someone who five years earlier had never run before and didn't grow up with an athletic background. Marathon recovery is a topic that faces every marathoner but it can be a tricky situation. Many factors can influence how a runner's recovery may go. As fast as she is, she's an even better person who bring tons of insight and humor to the show. If you want to learn more about Tanya we cover her complete running background in episode 262. The amazing Deirdre Keane is on the show! Deirdre is a pediatric ICU nurse practitioner at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She has run 35 marathons and 1 ultra-marathon (soon to be 2!). Deirdre loves to race but also uses running to support philanthropic causes. For example, during the peak of the pandemic in NYC, she ran 1000 miles in three months to raise money for food insecurity related to COVID. She ended up fundraising over $11,000. The money went to grocery store gift cards and grocery deliveries to underserved and vulnerable families. This year Deirdre is taking it up a notch. Maybe several notches. In October she will be doing the World Marathon Challenge. It is 7 marathons on the 7 continents in 7 consecutive days. She will be fundraising for Vibrant Emotional Health. Vibrant is a non-profit, centered in NYC, that offers individuals and families mental health resources, such as counseling and support groups. The organization also runs the National Suicide Hotline. Deirdre was featured in Humans of New York last August for utilizing running as a means to combat depression, which led to articles in Runner's World and Women's Running. When not running or working, Deirdre is in school getting her MBA part-time at NYU Stern School of Business. *Support Deirdre here: www.vibrant.org/supportdeirdrekeane. *Follow Deirdre on Instagram: www.instagram.com/deirdremkeane. #410 - Vanessa Corcoran: "It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint: My Road to the Marathon and Ph.D."
Although she spent her childhood with her nose in a book, ducking when any ball was thrown in her direction, Vanessa is now a 2-time Boston Marathon finisher, and has run over 100 road races. Currently an advising dean at Georgetown University, Vanessa earned her Ph.D. in medieval history from The Catholic University of America. Vanessa lives in Washington D.C. with her husband Patrick and their daughter, Lucy. When she began graduate school, Vanessa did not imagine that running would help her earn a doctorate in medieval history. Yet, within a few months of lacing up her sneakers, Vanessa went from a non-runner to qualifying for the prestigious Boston Marathon. Vanessa enjoyed that running rewarded those who embraced hard work and sought to see similar results in school. But the struggles associated with a rigorous academic program caused Vanessa to wonder whether she would ever accomplish her lifelong goal of earning a Ph.D. Her new book It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint: My Road to the Marathon and Ph.D. tells two intertwined stories of Vanessa’s rigorous intellectual and athletic journeys. Through episodes of running and researching, both the victories and setbacks, readers will discover how Vanessa found joy in the midst of a difficult quest. This relatable, inspiring, and candid memoir will be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates a good comeback story or is seeking themselves to take on a seemingly insurmountable challenge. #407 - Reaching New Levels in Training
We are back with another solo episode focused on reaching new levels in training. This episode dovetails with a recent drastic uptick in miles in my own training as I prepare for the Eugene Marathon. It's very exciting for me and there a lots of information to be gained by breaking it down. Here are some of the points that are covered: Believing 100% in an imperfect training plan is better than the perfect plan that you don’t embrace Getting past arguing for my limitations instead of embracing possibility – or at least being curious and open minded about the possibility of surprising Increase in training miles 50 – 53 – 60. First every back to back 50’s. First ever 60. What changed? Building on fitness, not overthinking it, embracing the training, not comparing it to the past, allowing the runs to take shape. Finally – knowing that I, and all of us, can do far far more than we think we can Sponsor: Join me in running the 2022 Eugene Marathon! #405 - Cate Barrett: A Beacon for Runners Everywhere
Cate Barrett is a star. Enormously talented, tough, and brilliant. It was an honor to speak with Cate about her post-college running life (she was a six time all-conference at Baylor University) during which she had a some amazing highs, like qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, and several challenges. Cate was able to carve out a niche in the running world as an elite yet not quite professional runner. It's a tricky situation that required her to navigate many of the same obstacles most everyday runners face. Finally, we talk about Cate's running and health journey after giving birth to her daughter roughly a year ago. Often times we hear about the women who bounce back from pregnancy on the quicker end of the spectrum. We have chronicled those stories on this podcast many times. #404 - Veronica Goebel: Marathons, Houston, Treadmills, and Keeping it in the Family
Veronica Goebel started running in 2016 when her cousin, Aracely Richardson, convinced her to run a marathon. That's right, a conversion from non-runner to embarking on a marathon training cycle. Not only was that a big task to take on, when raceday came around she ran several weeks pregnant. By that point she had caught the running bug and it was there to stay. Six years later, Veronica has run a handful of marathons, over a dozen half-marathons, become a member of the Houston Harriers, and cut over an hour off her marathon PR from 5:20 to the low 4:00's. Veronica, a mother of three, also works as a real estate agent when is isn't crushing miles on her treadmill or doing long runs with the Houston Harriers. In this episode we talk about her later start as a runner, learning from her dad who is trying to break 3:00 in the marathon, how she has become an active member of the vibrant Houston running scene, and so much more. Jocelyn Rivas from South Central Los Angeles is a 24 year old force of nature. She broke the Guinness World Record for the youngest woman to run 100 marathons at the 2021 Los Angeles Marathon. In 2013, Jocelyn decided to go see her friend run at the LA Marathon at Mile 18. She saw runners of all ages running from teenagers to 60-year-olds. This was the moment that inspired her to run a marathon. Although she knew it was going to be hard due to her medical history of being born with a broken back, neck and feet. She decided she didn’t want to limit herself anymore. The first Coach’s Corner episode of 2022 is here and it features two legends: Megan Roche, M.D. and Jacob Puzey. #396 - Connor Meakin: Returning From "You May Never Run Again"
2014 was meant to be a banner year of running for Connor Meakin, not (maybe) his last as a runner. He enjoyed early success, winning races and feeling amazing in the process, which motivated him to want more and push even harder. Things completely derailed soon after as he got blasted with devastating prognosis for an injury that didn't initially seem too serious. Connor had developed a serious foot injury that prompted his doctor to him that he may never run again. For two years Connor tried everything from the conventional to the other end of the spectrum. Soon his mental and emotional health were also in need of rehabilitation. Through it all, Connor kept pushing to find answers to get back to something he loved. In the process he not only rebuilt his body but created a new life for himself. Sponsors: Gift giving season is here and breo massagers have great gift ideas for family and friends. #389 - Stefanie Flippin: From Doctor to Ultrarunner of the Year Nominee
Seemingly every time I check on Dr. Stefanie Flippin's progress as a runner she is reaching greater heights. This 2021 was no different for this dynamo. Earlier this year Stefanie took a big leap by signing with HOKA and becoming a professional trail and ultra runner. This was after she won the USATF 100 Mile Championship in a blistering time. Two weeks ago Stefanie returned to her favorite distance and finished fourth overall and top female at Tunnel Hill 100 Miler. In this episode we talk about her decision to turn pro and step away from her medical practice, why it was a good fit for her, what it's like to be nominated as one of USATF's trail and ultra runners of the year, and what about 100 mile distance suits her so well.
